---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Singer calls himself lucky—lucky to get the opportunity and also to work with some of the great talents in the industry. But whether it’s luck or talent, or a combination of the two, he has achieved a goal he set out to accomplish after he finished law school: Not to win awards, but to inspire people to talk about things that matter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- “This is something I love to do, work on real-life stories, because I’m a law student at heart and a student at heart, I love doing research on topics I have absolutely no knowledge of.” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- #joshsinger #best #screenwriter #spotlight #wednesday #film #films #movie #movies #actor #actors #director #cinema #movielover #instafilm #filmcommunity #penguinreviews #like #follow #comment #likeforlike #followforfollow ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Denis Villeneuve is a French Canadian film director and writer. He started his career as a filmmaker at the National Film Board of Canada. He is best known for his feature films Arrival (2016), Sicario (2015), Prisoners (2013), Enemy (2013) and Incendies (2010). His latest film Blade Runner 2049 received great reviews. Critics call film a 'sci-fi masterpiece' and 'better than the original'. 🐧 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- An important technique that Villeneuve uses in many of his films is mystery. Villeneuve purposefully restricts the perspective of his films to that of the main character so that all facts are not known to the audience. With this set-up, many of his characters are searching for answers, and so is the audience. This helps to set up a twist at the end, where, if the events the film depicted had been shown in a traditional “third person” perspective, it would not have been as surprising. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Villeneuve's films tend to push for realism. He enforces it through violence. He is not afraid of showing bloody details in order to evoke an emotion out of his audience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Villeneuve uses his opening shot to establish a tone and grab the audience’s attention. The first scene is an important one in the context of the entire film, but the true value of that scene is not always apparent until much later. Song to song (2017)
Song to Song (2017) Drama, Music, Romance IMDb: 5.9 Director: Terrence Malick Stars: Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender Song to Song is a simple love story focusing on the music business. The audience meets a love triangle - Faye (Rooney Mara), BV (Ryan Gosling) and Cook (Michael Fassbender). Fassbender plays a cynical music producer and playboy who spoils the life of the others. He meets Rhonda (Natalie Portman) and like a snake from the Garden of Eden destroying her life. BV from the other hand is a music writer and trying to do the right thing. He falls in love with struggling musician Faye. She does not prefer to plan everything; she is going with the flow. To make her life easier she sleeps with Cook. She may seem indifferent but with the closer look, it is obvious that it is hard for her to see what is right and what is wrong. All three are “good” friends, traveling together, producing together, but it does not last forever. Every character in the film is trying to find the purpose of life. They are trying to understand who they are and what they are doing here. Faye and BV have a lot in common. They both want to make their parents proud. Both of them make mistakes but in the end, they find the right answer. Song to song has a unique cinematography style with additional philosophical monologue behind the camera. The camera follows actors in a way that makes storytelling intimate and thrilling. The outstanding performing adds magic to the film.
Penguin’s review: 4/6

Mother! (2017)

Mother! (2017) Drama, Horror, Mystery IMDb: 6.8 Director: Darren Aronofsky Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” is one of the most controversial movies of the year. “mother!” is like nothing you have ever seen before. If you are waiting for thriller, drama or detective then you are going to be disappointed, because it is Aronofsky’s genre that does not look like something ordinary. The plot seems deceptively simple – a couple played by Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence has some relationship problems. He is a famous writer who can’t write because of lack of inspiration and she is a housewife who is working to remodel his house after a fire. Once somebody comes into their house and all action begins. After a while, the audience understands that the plot is not so elementary and there is something which hides between the lines. The director does not follow the cinematic rules which the audience got used to. Aronofsky examines so many themes including gender roles, religion, war, terrorism, sexual slavery and etc. in his own creative way. Some will hate this movie, some will be frustrated and some will say that it is a masterpiece. But it is obvious that everybody will talk about it! Penguin’s rate: 5/6

A Ghost Story (2017)

A Ghost Story (2017) Drama, Fantasy, Romance IMDb: 7.8 Director: David Lowery Stars: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, McColm Cephas Jr. A Ghost Story is not a horror movie as it title implied. It is about love, time and loss. Casey Affleck and brilliant Rooney Mara play a couple living in a rented house but are planning to move to the another apartment. Before they move there he dies in a car accident. It is Affleck’s character ghost that we follow through the rest of the movie. Instead of typical CGI ghost, we meet character underneath a white sheet with two black eye holes. David Lowery uses a square shot making movie more personal. He presents both the life after death and a life of a person who lost a loved one. As the time passes ghost does not disappear. He is trying to find the answer why he is still here. He is unable to speak and thus desperately watching his wife during her grief; he sees how she is moving on, but still does not see the answer. And when he is finally got it we still do not have any idea what was it. The film does not have many dialogues. There are a lot of long passages where the main characters are staring at something or eating pie on the floor and crying. There is only one scene with a deep monologue about the pointlessness of human activity. A Ghost Story is an unusual and emotional story that deploys the deepest fear of a life after death. Penguin’s rate: 5/6

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) Action, Adventure, Comedy IMDb: 7.4 Director: Matthew Vaughn Stars: Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Mark Strong Matthew Vaughn’s sequel has more action, more actors, new locations, and new antagonist but is it good for the film? The action and humor of the first film were a moving force; unfortunately, the sequel has only the former. The second film lost his charm and a great sense of humor. Instead of this, the audience gets a few funny jokes and tedious plot. Return of Colin Firth, love story between Eggsy and princess and the new secret agency “Statesman” suffer from poor writing. Firth resurrection could be more impressive, the love story is unnecessary and the new agency is inexpressive. The new villain (Poppy) played by astonishing Julianne Moore is too odd. She is a drug baron supplying the whole world with dope who lives in the 50’s style “corner” built in the middle of the jungle. She has two electric dogs and personal singer who is the best part of the film and it is disappointing. There are also great actors like Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges who are not revealed and as a result none of these characters are actually gripping. Nevertheless, Taron Egerton, Colin Firth and Mark Strong are still great and charismatic like in The Secret Service. Penguin's rate: 3/6

Logan Lucky (2017)

Logan Lucky (2017) Comedy, Crime, Drama IMDb: 7.3 Director: Steven Soderbergh Stars: Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig After so-called “retirement” Soderbergh comes back with Southern variation of his “Ocean’s” movies. The plot of Logan Lucky centers on the heist of the coffers of NASCAR during the Coca-Cola 600. Unlike the “Ocean’s” films its plot twist does not keep the audience surprised and it is not a disadvantage because Logan Lucky is about people who are tired of being pushed by the system. Speaking about main characters (Channing Tatum and Adam Driver), it seems that director uses southern stereotypes to amuse the audience; however, during the film, they appear not as stupid as they initially seem. During the film we can hear great country music like John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” that’s makes you sing along. It’s good to see Soderbergh back with a story about ordinary people with extraordinary mindset. Penguin’s rate: 4/6
