Chloroform you bugger
Hi fellow writers What some juicy juicy details about chloroform?  Chemical Name: Trichloromethane, Methylidyne trichloride Formula: CHCL3 Molecular Weight: 119,38 g/mol General Precautions: Do not eat, Do not place in eyes, avoid inhalation, preggos run, PPE advised
1. Chloroform is in fact a carcinogen so please don’t like test it on yourself to see how long it takes to knock someone out with it, you are asking to get cancer.
2. Chloroform has shown significant evidence to harm buns in the oven so if you want a dramatic way for your character to find out they were pregnant but gasp lost the baby, just chloroform them. The exact harm ranges from death (of fetus) to growth deformities.
3. How quickly you pass out from it is like a whole science in and of itself, so keep this in mind. The bigger the person, the lower the concentration in the blood, the longer they take to pass out. The smaller the person the higher concentration so they go quicker. But it can be anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. Also the affects can last for a while so maybe the character is like “I’m fine!” and then is a goner.
4. Chloroform causes skin irritation so could be like a dead give away or make sure the bad guys wear gloves.
5. Excessive inhalation causes death so again DO NOT inhale it.
6. It is said to have a sweet-smell, smile like a dry cleaners or ethanol so yeah I guess that helps. Chloroform does not have a distinct smell, so please don’t be like “I smelt the rag, it was chloroform” I’m a frecking biochemist (student) and I don’t think I could for sure tell you its Chloroform. From memory, it just smells like all gross ethanol chemicals.

Actually the story behind cheese had significant evidence to show that humans tried to store milk the stomachs of sheep (basically they made stomach bags or jugs or what ever) and sheep/goat stomachs contain residual enzymes of rennet which causes milk to ferment to form cheese (yes I know that the bags were cleaned and dried but guys sanitization was not invented until the 19th century, you cannot tell me that they perfectly cleaned out STOMACHS and ezymes are just proteins so they can stick around for a while). After they discovered this, they started playing around with it. But curdling milk with acid is like a horrible way to make cheese. Enzymes are where it’s @. But cheese was like 98% an accident that humans capitalised on. Also like half of science is WHOOPS THAT WAS NOT MEANT TO HAPPEN. and then making something out of your failed life's work. We also believed for like 2000+ years that wheat spawned mice. People are very clever but also very stupid.  But yeah cheese came from stomach bags
I keep thinking about that one post that was going around talking about the potential origins of cheese and everyone immediately jumps to it must've been rotten milk that they ate out of desperation. But I'd like to posit that the first cheese was probably someone adding an acid to warmed milk and realising it splits it. Like it's not that big a stretch of the imagination for someone to think "oh I like warm milk but I also like this acidic fruit, I wonder if I can mix them". From there a little experimentation on separating the new curd from the whey and you've got a simple fresh cheese.
I dunno I think the reason I wanted to make this post is just that we tend to desscribe a lot of discoveries around food as desperate acts of starvation and not genuinely thought out experimentations based on observations like every other form of human knowledge. Ancient people weren't stupid starving unwashed masses and it's important to remember that. They were people who could think and deduce and logic their way through things as good as you or I.

This is the infamous Judging Snek. He is believed to be Loki in disguise and is very rare. Reblog for clear skin since he only appears once in an hour (very rare!) to judge you and stab Thor.

The gaang plays a stupid game which basically tests how good zuko is at finding shit.
It starts off with aang trying to make zuko more likeable by showing how good he is at finding things. He hides their supplies in a weird part of the western air temple and is like “don’t worry. I’m sure zuko can find it by the end of the day.” He finds it in ten minutes.
The game gets more ridiculous. Aang hides their supply bag in secret rooms that not even he knew existed up until now. Katara freezes it in a block of ice and submerges it in a nearby lake. Sokka trains Appa to keep it in his mouth for long periods of time without swallowing it. Zuko finds it every damn time.
They’re impressed and somewhat unsettled by how good he is at this game. But they absolutely lose their shit when it comes to toph’s turn. She hides the supply bag deep underground and assures them that zuko can’t possibly find it unless he magically became an earth bender and learned seismic sense overnight.
Zuko kinda struggles with this one until he walks over the patch of dirt where toph buried the bag. It looks normal but he feels...different somehow?
Everyone’s thinking “oh god. Oh no. He can’t possibly do it. Don’t tell me he’s gonna do it.” Zuko silently points below his feet and the rest of the gaang have a collective breakdown.
Zuko’s like, “does this mean you guys think I’m cool now?” They’re all too terrified to say anything but “y-yeah sure.” And poor zuko is too socially inept to hear the fear in their voices. He just smiles and thinks his friends are liking him more now.

This year was going to be the first time I did Inktober but judging by everything that’s going I don’t really think it’s a good idea. I’m also not really used to working in black and white anyway so I’m going to be doing #artober instead. This is the prompt list that I created and am going to be working with! Feel free to use it as well, you can work in ink or colour, digitally or not. It’s just about creating work that you are proud of and are excited about, as well as challenging yourself. Writing is also welcome
There are obviously lots of other October challenges that you can take part in but I’m going to be using these prompts, let me know if you use them too!

As much as I think that a lot of what has been said above is important, I also think as a parent you can make this experience more interesting for your kid and make it so that you can both learn and get something out of it. Yes, kid minds may not be able to fully grapple with the history of places like this but kids' minds also need to be nurtured to find learning as an exciting and interesting process rather than just “adult stuff”
My mom used to bring magic and wonder into places like this and let our imagination run wild while still teaching us respect. Yes, the child may not have the longest attention span or understand what the big deal with some rocks is, but that’s only because you aren’t approaching the situation while keeping fun and lifelong learning in mind.
Sure giving the game boy to the kid can let them quietly entertain themselves and get on with it but it also teaches them to look at the world as ‘adult’ rather than being filled with wonder and learning.
Tell them stories about stone henge being filled with fairies and magic, keep some truth to it and let their minds do the rest. Allow them to selectively transform their reality into something far greater than the eye can see and watch as they find wonder and learning in things that seem ‘adult’. You can still enjoy the history of it while they enjoy the magic of it.
The greatest gift my mom ever gave me was my imagination and the ability to find wonder in learning, I am still reaping the benefits from it today.
I would far rather have my child find magic and wonder in the physical world and learn from it, then be trapped in the digital world without truly understanding that magic is all around us.
Yes, your kid might not find magic all the time in things and then you can give them the gameboy, but why would you ever want them to lose that spark of magic that can be found even in the dullest of places?

Okay so there’s this BIG thing in the atla fandom that Kyoshi would have been disappointed that Aang didn’t kill Ozai but I have quite a few issues with this I also think people over simplify Kyoshi way too much.
In the avatar advice scene, Kyoshi admits that she doesn’t really see the difference between Chin the Conqueror having died because of his own stubbornness and her having to take his life on her own, but I think we need to understand something.
Kyoshi understood her duties as the Avatar were to maintain the peace in the world, and she recognised that she would have had to do anything in order to maintain it. HOWEVER I don’t think that Kyoshi took pleasure or enjoyment in killing people or fulfilling her duties to maintain peace. She simply understood the significant burden placed on her shoulders and had to clean up the mess that the weak ass avatar before her left behind.
(I haven’t watched LOK so I could be wrong but this is my understanding)
I also think it’s important to remember that Kyoshi lived for 230 years, meaning that she had an ample amount of time to learn things for herself and gather a great amount of wisdom. I think Kyoshi would actually avoid unnecessary killing where she could but also understood when drastic measures were necessary. Yes she was efficient (the queen of getting stuff done) and yes her methods may have sometimes been frowned upon by the Air monks but I don’t think this makes Kyoshi blood thirsty nor does it mean that she would be upset or frustrated that Aang didn’t kill Ozai.
I also get slight Iroh vibes from Kyoshi in this scene and she definitely gives the feeling of long learned wisdom and understanding.
Kyoshi also gives Aang the best peice of advice of all the avatars: “Only justice will bring peace.” She does not say: “only murder will bring peace” or “killing Ozai is the only way to do things.” she is simply stating that Aang must execute justice and he must find the best way possible to do so. Kyoshi also recognises that her and Aang’s methods are different and that both of them may have different teachings and understandings of the situation but she simply emphasises the importance of the Avatar’s duty to maintain peace and bring justice to those who disrupt it.
I also think Kyoshi would’ve been damn proud of Aang because his decision to take away Ozai’s bending brought about far more justice than killing him ever would have. Not only does Ozai have to live with the fact that he has become the thing he hates the most: weak. But Ozai being alive without bringing harm to anyone gives a lot of other characters closure and justice for what was done to them.
The first one that pops into mind is Ursa, who finally overcomes her fear of him in Smoke and Shadows when she confronts him and realises that he is mostly bark and no bite. This allows her to live in the palace unafraid and begin to rebuild her relationship with Zuko. Zuko initially struggles with having him alive but comes to find justice in it to and learns from his father while seeing him in prison. I’m sure there are other’s but I can’t think of them off the top of my head.
Killing Ozai wouldn’t have brought justice, in my opinion, it just would have furthered the slaughter. I think Kyoshi would have been DAMN proud of Aang’s decision. Of course she would have done it differently, but she also didn’t have the same knowledge as Aang (spirit bending) and therefore only had one option.
Kyoshi is not some senseless killer but one of the most just, efficient and fair avatars. Her advice to Aang is probably the best advice he could have been given and continues to help him in his later journey’s even when it is not explicitly stated or shown.
Anyway, I love Kyoshi and I hate it when she isn’t shown for what she is: wise, just, fair and a peacemaker.

One thing I’ve learned about writing is ”give everything a face”. It’s no good to write passively that the nobility fled the city or that the toxic marshes were poisoning the animals beyond any ability to function. Make a protagonist see how a desperate woman in torn silks climbs onto a carriage and speeds off, or a two-headed deer wanders right into the camp and into the fire. Don’t just have an ambiguous flock of all-controlling oligarchy, name one or two representatives of it, and illustrate just how vile and greedy they are as people.
it’s bad to have characters who serve no purpose in the story, but giving something a face is a perfectly valid purpose.

Research
I’m writing a new werewolf/witch book and I was wondering if anyone can direct me to some really good folklore resources and witch research? My witch is called a Magnus in the book and has natural roots to her power.
