fanfic writing culture isn’t “oh dang! I wanted to write about this prompt with this character but someone else already wrote it, so now I can’t”.
fanfic writing culture is always “two cakes is better than one. the more the merrier. there can ever be enough fics of this character with this prompt!”

One thing I haven't seen be touched upon in fandom, is all those videos of people reading fanfic just to make fun of it, or laugh at it with their friends
It's mean spirited, to pluck a fic written by a random person and then point fingers at it, or even try to 'fix' it. It's often written by a young fanfic writer who is starting their writing journey, or a person whose first language isn't english, or by somebody who is just trying to have fun with what they're writing and not caring about the quality
It's dispiriting to criticise a fanfic when the critic isnt a part of fandom, and when fandom is a place for people to share their creativity without being judged
It sends the message that "badly" written fanfiction is something to be judged, and dissuades people from writing whatever they want for fear of it not being up to standard
This touches upon the bigger issue I have been noticing in fandom, where there has been a decreasing amount of this type of fanfiction because the standard for quality has been increasing. Which is bullshit, because fanfiction isnt about quality, but about the creativity, and we as fandom have been slowly forgetting that, with all the people that have been criticising that trope and this trope, and this way of writing and that
So if you want to write down an idea you have, write it. You don't have to be a skilled writer, your fanfic doesnt have to be perfect prose. It doesn't matter if the tropes you use are cliche or if you have repeated this adjective seven times. Make your characters ooc, add your OCs in there, write a self insert. As long as you understand the tagging system and general fanfic etiquette, post whatever you want
Read that wattpad fanfic, read that quotev fanfic, filter whatever you want on ao3. And dont comment unsolicited criticism or advice under a fic, and be mindful about how you speak your opinions online
We're here to spread creativity, not restrict it

unless they specifically asked, you don’t get to tell a fanfic writer you think they mischaracterized the character by the way. because the second someone writes a fanfic about a character, that character becomes the writer’s own version of the character. canon is only a suggestion, but whether or not an author will follow it / how much of canon an author will take is entirely up to them. you don’t get to stick your nose in their world and tell them “hey this is not to my liking therefore I think you’re doing it wrong” when you can simply leave quietly and move on to something else you may enjoy
