Tbh the way I've seen it is very similar in that on the surface, Palpatine is nice. I more imagine him using the Force to do messed up shit to them and either mentally making it so they can't say anything or just... gaslighting the hell out of them. Like they can't complain because he's nice to them, but there's something about him that makes all of them uneasy

Because you're right, it doesn't necessarily make sense for him to openly abuse them! It could be interesting if it was explored from the position of no one stops Palpatine because the dehumanizing of the clones is so rampant. But that also runs the risk of someone else who's not in the Senate putting pieces together

I've enjoyed reading the theories about Palpatine mind-controlling members of the Coruscant Guard. But I definitely prefer the idea of Palpatine never once interceding with the inhibitor chip and that he's simply won over the Guard. There's something uncanny about that, if that makes sense? Palpatine is charismatic - he won over all of the Republic. The people loved him. So this idea that he also won over the Guard? It makes him that much more manipulative and scary in my mind.

And, in my opinion, there's something more interesting about giving Fox agency over his decisions, rather than simply being mind-controlled by the inhibitor chip. (Again, this is just my opinion. I'm not trying to dunk on people who enjoy the mind-control theories/head canons. Lots of them are fascinating to consider!) But it makes Fox more real, to me, knowing that, for instance, he killed Fives of his own volition.

It's likely that Fox was told that Fives was deranged and dangerous (and why would he ever question Palpatine, when Palpatine has never done Fox any wrong - in this head canon). And then Fives not only lunged for a gun but turned that gun on Fox and his men? For me, I see that decision as Fox doing his duty, but also wanting to protect his men from someone whom he believed was a threat.

Ah man, I don't know how to explain it, but the idea of the clones making these hard decisions that we as viewers might not agree with makes them that much more real and human in my eyes.
