Hellblazer Reading Order

This is for the original run of Hellblazer 1-300 from 1987-2013 along with all relevant miniseries, one-shots and specials. I wanted to read this for a long time and it’s worth it. There’s a chunk of issues that I disliked, but I’m less mad that they weren’t good and more disappointed at being robbed of 80 or so issues with the character. Reaching the end felt like losing a friend, and now, as a reader watching the title end, I know what it was like for John to see all his friends die around him. So cheers to John Constantine: while there will be reboots and adaptations and alternate versions, there will never be another character like the original. Bold=important parts of the main story Italics=optional (with explanations) Constantine was created by Alan Moore in the pages of Swamp Thing so it feels necessary to add that as an optional start. However, aside from a few quick references in the first few Hellblazer issues you can enjoy that run without this. Still, it’s a good story and a good introduction. Technically he first appeared in ST 32 but that’s a retcon for a single panel of a guy in the background. Like how Jessica Jones “technically” first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #4 in ‘63 despite not being created until the early ‘00s.

Swamp Thing Volume 2 #37-51 – The main story ends with 50 but Constantine’s exodus happens in 51.

Hellblazer 1-9 – Beginning of Delano’s run.

Swamp Thing 76-77 – The crossover timeline is funky but it works out midway through Hellblazer 10.

Hellblazer 10-13

Annual (1989)

Hellblazer 14-17

Sandman (V2) 3 – John’s in basically the entire issue as he and Dream team up to find Dream’s missing shit. The end of this story is shown in the middle of issue 19, so nowhere you put it will really fit because 18 ends in a cliffhanger immediately picked up in 19. I’d say read it before 18 or after 19, if you decide to read it at all.

Hellblazer 18-40

Shade the Changing Man 42-44 – Not much of a Constantine story as he’s barely in it. Technically this takes place before his Swamp Thing appearances because of time travel stuff, making the chronology wonky. I only mention this because the same writer eventually does a Hellblazer run and this arc becomes part of it. Can be read any time before Hellblazer 251.

Books of Magic 1-4 – A sort of team comes together with Constantine being one of the four. Written by Neil Gaiman.

Hellblazer 41-69 – Start of Ennis’ run.

Vertigo Jam 1  – Short story by Ennis.

Hellblazer 70-71

Hellblazer: Special 1 (1993) – Another one-shot by Ennis.

Hellblazer 72-83

Heartland – Epilogue to Ennis’ run. doesn’t have Constantine but it’s about one of his close supporting cast and is pretty good. They even include this in the collected editions.

It’s me, tumblr user Millie Milfzatannaz, and I’ve been promising everyone a Hellblazer reading guide for months now. It’s my absolute favorite comic! I’m very passionate about it.

To keep this guide short and approachable, I’m framing it through the lens of essential writers’ runs, rather than individual arcs. With 300 issues and multiple spinoffs, Hellblazer is a lot to get through. This way, I can dole out what I consider the most important for new readers.

Overview

Hellblazer is John Constantine’s solo comic that started in 1988, following his appearances in Swamp Thing. (#37 is his first appearance, if you’d like to take a peak). He’s modeled after Sting and was pitched as a streetwise, working class occultist. It would later become a staple of the Vertigo label. Hellblazer is a horror comic firmly entrenched in Thatcher’s London, even as it moved to the 21st century. It explores elements of classism, mental health, domestic abuse, sexuality, the AIDS crisis, and leftism as a whole.

Hellblazer readers usually refer to key authors when discussing the comic. These include Delano, Ennis, Jenkins, Ellis, Azzarello, Carey, Diggle, and Milligan. There are also guest issues for writers like Neil Gaiman.

For new readers, I’ll only recommend Delano, Ennis, Jenkins, Carey, and Diggle. The great thing about Hellblazer is that ill always invite anyone to do a full reading, but I simply don’t think Azzarello and Milligan deserve attention. They have a host of problems and mischaracterization that requires a separate essay, which you are welcome to ask about. I’ll add “essential arcs”, ones that I personally reread the most. It’s just a helpful pointer, and my opinion entirely.

Delano

-> Delano was John’s first writer, and the one to flesh out his backstory. His writing is extremely fundamental to understanding John as a character, but his plots can be a bit weird and hard to slog through. If you get stuck, I will say that you’re not alone. I learned to appreciate it after I was finished.

Issues: #1-40

Essential Arcs: The Family Man (23-33) the Newcastle issues (11-12), and the Fear Machine (14-22).

As you can see, Delano’s arcs tend to be quite long. But he wrote by the far the most nuanced John, who was bitter, traumatized, but capable of being silly, sarcastic, and quite caring at times.

I think some of the art during this period is very underrated. Of course, you can’t go wrong with McKean’s covers.

A really notable standout issue from this time is the one shot “Hold Me”, #27. It’s written by Gaiman and its haunting and beautiful.

Ennis

-> Garth Ennis is perhaps Hellblazer’s most recognizable writer. He wrote Dangerous Habits, and he’s also famous for introducing John’s love interest Kit. His take on John expands upon Delano’s work, but really hammers in the themes of John’s carelessness reflected against the part of him that wants to love and be loved.

Issues: #41-83

Essential Arcs: Dangerous Habits (41-46), Royal Blood (52-55) and Rake at the Gates of Hell (78-81)

This era also has some fantastic standalone stories, like issue #51, the first time John’s bisexuality was referenced. I’m also quite fond of #63, his birthday party.

Jenkins

-> Jenkins is severely underrated. He’s never mentioned in Hellblazer fan discussions, but I really like his work here. He incorporated a lot of mythology and English history, and had a lively supporting cast for John, including his girlfriend at the time Dani. John here is almost relaxed and settled, which of course never lasts.

Issues: #89-128

Essential arcs: Critical Mass (92-97), and Last Man Standing (110-114).

Other standout issues for me include 108, 118, and 120.

This era of cover art was done by Phillips, and they’re my favorites.

Carey

-> Carey had the unique and tough job of picking up after John’s long departure to America during Azzarello’s run. Carey had to reintroduce the fundamentals of John’s character, and further bring him along on his journey. There is a lot of interesting magic use throughout. However, Carey’s run is sad. It’s emotionally draining at times, and it still pricks my heart to reread. Just a forewarning. It’s harder to isolate arcs to recommend, because its really all one long narrative.

Issues: #175-215

Essential Arcs- Red Sepulchre (175-180), Third Worlds (184-186), Staring at the Wall (189-195)

Frusin’s art during Carey’s run is some of the best of the entire series

This is a really intense run for the comic, perhaps the most taxing of the entire series. Take your time here. It’s really good.

Diggle

-> This is the last Hellblazer writer I’m going to suggest new readers tackle. I love Diggle, personally. His dialogue is so fun and snappy, and his John is really smart and quick witted. It’s a bit of a treat after Carye’s intensity. Much lower stakes, and a smaller run. To me, he actually could’ve wrapped up the entire series.

Issues: #230-249

Essential Arcs: Wheels of Chance, Systems of Control (232-233) and The Laughing Magician (240-242)

There aren’t a lot of standalone issues here I think stand out, although I do love the entire run.

It’s a wip, currently with three chapters up. I’ve really liked it so far though. This is a pre- whole family together thing. And Joker dies. Always a plus. Not a good Talia fic though, so be warned.

Unfinished Business and Long Lost Partners by Bumble_Rex

This one is leading up to the reveal that Jason’s alive for the rest of the family.

Oh, my babies. And everyone ends up happy.

Liminal Space by Calamityjim

Not at all a focus in this fic, but they’re both in the league and then they’re brought home and everyone gets the hugs they need.

Blood in the Water by MichaBerry

Again, not really the focus of this fic. It’s Tim-centric, but Jason, Tim, and Damian all get to know each other as they’re trekking across the world away from people that want to kill them or otherwise. Good times. Definitely not good Talia in this one, and Ra’s is a total pedophile, just so you’re aware.

Can you recommend the angstiest Jason-centric fics you know? I want to cry.

Do I ever. So here’s my top-5 Jason Todd Angst fics that made me cry, and will make you too:

1. Zoology series by jerseydevious

Weird things happen, when Batman's your dad and Batman's not alright.

The series is incomplete but you can read the first one without fear, it’s great as it is on its own. Though the second one packs a mightier punch but, sadly, is not yet finished.

I love author’s portrayal of complicated familial relationships where no one is right or wrong but everyone struggles.

2. No Way Out by d_aia                

It’s almost dawn. The city is as peaceful as it gets, preparing for a new day. Earlier they had to deal with Black Mask’s dealers moving in on Red Hood’s territory, but the whole thing ended before they got there. Unsurprisingly, Jay’s people won and they apparently did without him. He must have been busy with something else, which could be bad, good, or both.

“Nightwing, there’s an explosion at the Gotham harbor,” Babs reports. “Sending you the coordinates… now.”

* Dick's week is about to be derailed.

It’s not the most popular work of this author, and while I appreciate their other fics as well, I honestly don’t know why not - it literally made me cry, every time I read it.

3.The Bargain by glymr, iesika

Wayne is sitting there staring at him, his thick, scarred legs and his huge fucking chest not hidden at all by a flimsy silk robe.

Jason swallows, and then he just stands there getting stared at until he wants to scream.

It’s not what the summary would make you think, okay? It’s a part of the larger series, Kings Among Runaways. But this one made me cry, not because something awful happens between Bruce and Jason, but because how Jason is, as a character, where he’s at this point of this story, what’s he’s ready to do.

Fair warning, it’s a No-Batfam jaytim AU, with underage relationships depicted and alluded to so check tags and warnings, and use your discretion.

4. Little Absences by MoonySideDown 

There's an empty seat straight across from him. A seat where a little boy used to perch each morning, wolfing down his breakfast like someone was about to take it from him. He would poke at his food with his fork and tell Bruce about whatever he was studying in school, or what book he was reading.

    A gaping hole sits in front of his face. A bleeding wound in his life where his second son used to be.

    Good morning, B.

The summary sets the reader’s expectations perfectly, imo.

5) Scheherazade by Cerusee

Alfred angles himself so he can stir the diced pancetta, sizzling away in the pan, and watch Jason at the same time.  “You’ve never shared the particulars of your…missing years.”

"Yeah.”  The rhythmic thunk thunk of the knife against the wood falters. “The missing years."

"I wish you would.”

Or, the one where Alfred drags the tale of Jason’s death and resurrection out of him piece by horrifying piece.

It’s a very powerful retelling of the Lost Days. It will make you sad even if you’re ambivalent toward that era of Jason’s life.

Please note that every author on this list is a really good one, and I would recommend going through all of their fics. Those mentioned above are just the ones I have proof I cried while reading.

Any good Jason Todd fanfics to recommend?( Besides yours of course!)

I don’t read much fanfic these days, mostly to keep my own fics free of other writers’ ideas and headcanons, but here are a few authors and fics I have read and can whole-heartedly recommend.

@cerusee​ is the queen of fix-it fics with a true to original canon Robin!Jason and a Good Batdad™ Bruce. In particular, I would recommend:

Scheherezade, in which Alfred slowly pries the details of Jason’s resurrection out of him and becomes ever more frustrated with Bruce.

Honor Their Mistakes (Everybody Makes), the follow-up to Scheherezade.

Safe Space, in which Bruce makes some disturbing discoveries about how Jason views his relationship with Bruce. This one almost made me cry.

I See You Everywhere, which is about Bruce visiting Jason’s grave. Uncharacteristically for Cerusee, this one does not have a happy ending. Also, it did actually made me cry. It also made me write a fix-it sequel.

Death Comes To Town, in which Death the Endless visits a diner Jason and Dick are at, Jason does his best to protect Dick from… you know… the literal personification of death, and Dick finally gets that stick out of his ass and decides to be a good brother.

And the three prompt/dare fics she’s wrote for me so far: Atalanta, Chance Encounter, and Barbarians. (I say so far because she’s made the mistake of daring me to write something horrible twice now and I’ve always delivered. I am waiting for the next dare :P)

Other authors and fics I can recommend:

laceymcbain’s Robins United series, which is one of the most kudoed Jason fics/series on AO3 and for a good reason.

CasualDanger’s To Reconcile, in which somebody finally tells Jason that they actually missed him and love him.

barfboy’s Arkham Narc, in which the Arkham Knight militia goons are good bros to Arkham!Jason.

roserelease’s Family Comes First, in which Alfred kills Joker to protect Jason.

Kai_Maciel’s Outsider, in which the batkids roast Bruce for taking Jason back to Magdala Valley and Bruce tries to reconcile with him. One of the very first Jason fics I ever read. Still one of my favorites.

All of these fics are gen, btw.

Hey do you have any fic recommendations? like...mostly featuring Tim drake or Jason Todd (my faves) You have really good taste, and no I’m not picky about what kind of fic. (Although I do have a liking for reverse!Robins) so any will do.

oh but of course babe!

i don’t have as many tim or jason recs as i do dick, but i do have a good few. starting off with the reverse robins ones that i’ve read and adore:

the prophetic spring: a sort of dark and very unique take on reverse robins tim that i love to pieces

Placeholder: another tim-centric reverse robins fic about how much tim changes, written absolutely beautifully

For The Taking: part of the same series as placeholder, jason finding his way in this universe and finding out that robin is something you have to take

now some general favourite tim fics i have:

Raisin Delight: an absolutely fucking gorgeous casefic that deals with tim and bruce’s relationship. has a bittersweet but perfect ending

Message Man: this is going under tim fics bc it’s tim’s pov, but it’s equally tim and jason centric. the two of them are assassins for hire, working together

Home is Where the Heart Is: tim’s always been lonely during the holidays, but that may not be the case this year

Glorified Babisitter: in which tim joins the batfam, but as a Certified Civilian and psychologist in training

Surveillance: a civilian tim au where he joins the batfam by basically acting as an anonymous hacker and helper

Pounding the Pavement: core-four centric fic where tim moves away from gotham 

Catfishing: a civilian au where tim accidentally catfishes kon. hilarity and also feels

if you get lost (you can always be found): my absolute favourite tim fic of all time, a slightly canon divergent au of tim being trans

and the jason fics:

Ninja Kick the Damn Rabbit: mad hatter is a fucked up guy, and jason only gets hurt even worse in this, but maybe he’ll end up becoming a little closer to his family by the time it’s all over

Two Dead Birds: jason goes back to when he first became red hood and came to gotham, and majorly fucks up the timeline but in a way that we all love

ghost story: after jason dies in ethiopia, he comes back as a ghost haunting his family

Brother of Mine: au where jason was the first robin, and dick is his younger brother

miss me?: jason comes back to the batfam in a more peaceful yet much more heartbreaking way

robin’s roast: au where, instead of coming back to gotham and becoming a crime lord, jason opens up a coffee shop

Of Milkshakes and Marathons: tim is Struggling, jason ends up being a good big brother and helps

I was bored and had nothing to do, so I thought I’d share this cause they’re like super fun to read and stuff

Of Disasters and Marriages: Even peace isn’t without drama. And now that the wars are over, who else would Hera pick but Percy to fix her broken marriage? Zeus is entirely sure this is the worst idea she has ever had. <– crack, basically Percy being a good bro for the king and queen of Olympus.

Triton: Professional Date Crasher:  Percy finally bonds with Triton only to run into one, tiny problem. He won’t stop interrupting Percy’s dates. <– if you love sea sibling dynamics then this is the perfect fic for you!

In The Dusky Light: Or, Percy, amnesiac extraordinaire, washes up on the shores of Delos. <– Perpollo, the smut scenes are yummm, Percy being a little shit, powerful Percy Jackson. Apollo loves Percy’s booty, Percy loves Apollo’s booty, awesome plot twist in the end.

The Services of Amazon:   After the war, the Amazons gained a few new - and regained a few previous - Amazons, all marked by seven symbols. Six of them, they recognized, but the seventh…? They should have searched for them, should have turned the world upside down to find them, but they had a serious obstacle in their way: One very attractive Percy Jackson. <–  kinda crack, Soulmark AU, harem, no sex but there are mentions of it. Also, this isn’t like those type of fics where the girls are weakened so the man appears ‘stronger’.

Fraying at the Seams: Percy is tired of dealing with the constant rumors, stalking, harassment, and obsession. Is a simple hookup too much to ask for? AKA everyone wants Percy Jackson, but this feeling isn’t mutual. <– honestly this is my comfort fic, the humor, the plot twists, everything is perfect.

Half-Blood of the Eldest Gods: A Mamma Mia! AU, where Sally got busy back in the era of her son’s conception.aka, the how (they’re gods), who (the gods) and why (heartbreak) Percy Jackson has three fathers. <– crack. This had me cackling for hours.

Begin Again:  Life is finally going well. No quests, no monster, no wars. Until one fluke encounter with a Dracaena leaves Percy alone with his five year old son. ← Annabeth dies in this, Percy and his little son are going through a rough time, and Apollo shows up and helps them. Lots of deep talks, angst and fluff.

So we must build the world from it’s own ashes:  Percy and Annabeth are generals leading the Legion to fight against Gaea after the Gods have disappeared along with the mist. ← Percabeth, discussions of politics (nothing too serious), lots of badass demigod scenes and is kinda dark. If you’re a fan of Percy, Reyna, Leo, Nico, Hazel and Jason then this would do.

peripeteia: Zeus is mourning over Thalia’s death when a child that looks an awful lot like Poseidon shows up and comforts him. ← Zeus being a good uncle, and Percy being adorable. 

i’ll find him:  Tyson has been taken, and Percy’s on a warpath. Someone is going to pay. ← dark, powerful, percy being a very scary, revengeful and protective brother.

The fruit of the tree: “What’s in it for you?” Apollo whipped back. “I just want to make amends,” Eros pouted, “I feel so bad about that whole Daphne thing, Phoebus. Never meant to let it go that far. Let me make it up to you.” Apollo longs and yearns, and Eros presents a solution. ← One-sided Perpollo, very good smut.

Everyday Revelations: Five-year-old Percy wakes his father up in the middle night and Poseidon remembers why being a father, even with all its stress and sleepless nights, was the greatest thing that ever happened to him. ← mortal AU, lovely father and son relationship.

why would you offer a name to the same old tired pain?: Percy’s heart drops to his stomach as he realizes the whole name is in Ancient Greek. ← boy do i have words😫, this is literally my top 3 favorite perpollo fics. soulmate AU, possessive behaviors, with a very good smut scene at the end.

Since 10/28 of my fanfics for febuwhump are in the Percy Jackson fandom, I thought I'd make a list with just those:

Day 1: Mind Control 1.2k T

Tartarus had its own rules. Fire was drinkable. The ground was the body of a dark god. The air was acid, and demigods could be turned into smokey corpses.

Compared to that, the idea of controlling poisons was… easy.

Percy glared at the poisonous lake around him. He focused, and reached with the part of his mind that allowed him to control water.The poisonous tide stopped. The fumes blew away from him and back towards the goddess. The lake of poison rolled toward her in tiny waves and rivulets.

Akhlys took a hesitant step back. “What is this?!” She looked alarmed, scared even. Percy thought it was a good look on her.

“Poison,” Percy snarled at her. “That’s your specialty, right?”

Day 3: Imprisonment  1.9k T

After the Giant War, Percy's life is looking up. His relationship with Annabeth is strong as ever. Poseidon regularly invites him down to Atlantis to spend time with him and Tyson. The greek and roman have resolved most of their issues. Grover is starting his life's calling as Lord of the Wild. Paul helps Percy get his drivers license, and Percy helps his mom paint a room for his soon to be little sister.

Everything is perfect.

That is, until someone abducts Percy.

Day 6: "Please come back."  2.4k G

Percy studies the outline of Chicago. What was once a beautiful lively city is now a deadly, haunted wasteland. Percy shoulders his pack and goes to move onward, when he smells something in the air.

Smoke.

Percy wonders if the undead have managed to set themselves on fire. It wouldn’t be the first time. However, in the back of his mind, a quiet, hopeful voice says that it could be another human.

Percy hasn’t seen another human or demigod in over three weeks.

Another part of his mind whispers that it could be a trap set by a monster. It definitely wouldn’t be the first time they’ve tried that. However, the chance of seeing another demi-god, or even a rare, unturned human is too much to turn up.

Percy follows the smoke.

Day 12: "Who are you?" 2.0k G

He wakes up in a forest. He’s on his back lying on the dirt, looking up at the green canopy above him. He doesn't know how he got here. He stands up and looks around.

Suddenly, there's a sound, startling him.He jumps and spins around. In front of him is a... man. At least, he looks like a man. He’s wearing black jogging shorts, and a green loose shirt.

Something flickers in the back of his mind, but he can’t quite grasp it. The man in front of him, who had definitely not been there a moment ago, seems eerily familiar, but he can’t remember where he’s seen him.

Actually he can’t remember anything, at all.

After the Last Olympian and before the Son of Neptune, Percy encounters Hermes a couple times in his amnesiac state.

Day 14: "I didn't mean it." 2.4k T

After the Giant War, Percy decides what he wants to do with the rest of his life, career-wise. Percy and Annabeth go to New Rome's University to study marine biology and architecture. They get a dorm together, and it slowly starts to feel like home to both of them.

One day, Annabeth gets stressed with university and unintentionally snaps at Percy sending him into a panic attack.

Day 18: "I can't see." 3.5k T

After the Giant War, Percy and Annabeth get kidnapped by one of Gaea's Giantesses who wants revenge on Percy for stopping her mother's plans to wake up. To defeat her, Percy goes all out with his powers as son of the earthshaker & natural disasters.

Nico and Will show up with Mrs. O'Leary.

Day 22: Burned 5.3k T

Communications are down; phones, landline and the Internet aren’t working. Percy gets a dream of Hermes captured, and on the brink of fading. Percy, Annabeth and Nico go on a journey to save him.

Very mild angst, along with a touch of powerful!percy, percabeth fluff, solangelo fluff and Mrs. O'Leary with adorable puppies.

Day 23: "Don't Look." 2.6k G

When Luke stabs himself and Kronos at the end of the Last Olympian, he lets out a surge of energy. Percy gets hit by this energy, and it transports him back in space and time all the way to England 1993, the summer before Harry Potter's third year.

Day 24: Memory Loss 1.5k G

George and Martha have been stolen. Everything seems too… quiet without their constant bantering and hissing in his ears.

He goes to Percy Jackson for help. Annabeth Chase is with him, she gets annoyed at his arrival. Percy tells her to go back to their picnic. He turns to Hermes to ask if they can step into his office and then grabs his arm -

Millennia of bad memories of deceitful mortals trying to poison, hurt and trick him instantly rush back to him and instinctively Hermes fingers twitch, milliseconds away from smiting Percy Jackson.

There was a very, very short list of beings that Hermes was so casual, so familiar, so trusting with. His mother Maia, his brother Apollo, his snakes George and Martha, mortal women he fell for, a few of his sons and the odd hero or mortal that dedicated their lives to him.

Percy Jackson wasn't any of them.

Day 28: "You have to let me go." 1.3k G

AU to the ending of Mark of Athena; what if Frank heard Hazel and flew back down to catch Percy and Annabeth before they fell into Tartarus? Is he strong enough to carry both of them to safety, or will one of them fall into Tartarus alone?

Omg I just saw your post about loving fics with a relationship between nico and Anubis. Have you ever read the Death God Alliance by Asilda on FanFiction.Net ? It was written before Heroes of Olympus, so no Will, but it has solid writing and Percy also ends up involved.
