What am I forgetting? What belongs in that strange, dark blank where I can summon only a shadow of a dream? What happened?

The dark beneath the ice - Amelinda Bérubé
♥I got an ARC from publishers through NetGalley and this is my honest uninfluenced review♥
Rating: 4 of 7; 4 of 5; 9 of 10
I think the most important thing I can say here is: this is a paranormal book. No kidding. I spent more then half of the book wondering if it was really a paranormal or just mental issue. In the beginning, there's a lot of descriptions, like, really a lot and I was pretty annoyed by it, but before 20% I realised it wasn't happening so constantly and it was easier then. Or maybe it was just because at this point I was totally hooked.
So, Marianne parents are getting a divorce. And like that wasn't hard enough for a teen, she starts to freak out. Time lapses, weird noises, things breaking. She is dispatched to her aunt's place, and after an episode in the class, she starts talking with this girl, Rhiannon (but she prefers Ron). Ron's mom is a psychic and after Marianne's not-so-helpful appointment, Ron decides to help Marianne by herself. Must say, it doesn't end very well, you know. Now Marianne is fighting with this thing that neither she nor Ron actually knows what it is while it wants something from her. Something she stole from it.
You also get to see Marianne's feelings for Ron in a slow-burn, extremely cute and insecure realistic way that makes anything worth the time. The secondary characters are good, not too plain and not too deep that we can't even follow.
The whole book is written in a way that when you start to get your question straight, you won't wanna put it down. All you have to do is go through a confusing start, which, to be honestly honest, it's not so bad.
Ending: I'm starting to think that I'm the one who has a problem with endings, not the writers. I felt something was pretty rushed here. Since the second time she saw Ron's mother to the very end, I felt something was missing, but missing is not the right word. It's more like everything was tied too easily, which it's not actually a problem, but it annoys me.
Downsides: I was expecting more about she quitting dance and the breakdown after it, that way I feel that it wasn't such a big deal as I was made to think it was - especially cause it was apparently the breaking point - but honestly I felt like it was a normal-teen-rebellion.
Side note: There was a scene when Marianne is hearing like a hammer again and again and I was here, alone, at night, with a neighbour hamming some shit and honestly to god I thought I would lose my mind.

5 reasons why you should read: Olympian Challenger -  Astrid Arditi
Tumblr media
Unlike basically all the books I usually read, this doesn't take dozens of pages to things start happening. Everything starts right in the first chapter and you already have the invitation in the first scene - honestly, I would love if it was always like that. No, it’s not like we just jump into action, but the invitation came then we have context
It has an amazing Greek mythology. Astrid explores the myths in a very interesting and funny way. One can say it's a mix of Percy Jackson and Hunger Games
All the trials! It's kind of weird to put it like that, but I enjoyed it so much! They're all related to some of the most famous stories about the Greek heroes and it was pretty interesting.
The friendships bonds that were developed was relatable, and believable, and it just feels right, you know? The main trio was well balanced and it was very interesting to see these two characters that were basically opposites interacting so goodly
Hope Diaz. It's so weird having a character that's not stupid. I think it's hilarious that she didn't even wanna accept the invitation, it wasn't "hey, a mysterious invitation that dares me to make something stupid, I'm definitely going to do something crazy"; She's good, merciful, and she worries so much about her mother.
Bonus just look at this cover. that's all

You’re cordially invited… To embark on a singular journey. If your heart is true, And your soul heroic, Dare to face your fears, And your most precious wish will be granted. If these words you can read, Don’t breathe them to a soul, The punishment would be severe; That confidant may disappear. You have until midnight.

Olympian Challenger - by Astrid Arditi
You’re cordially invited… To embark on a singular journey. If your heart is true, And your soul heroic, Dare to face your fears, And your most precious wish will be granted. If these words you can read, Don’t breathe them to a soul, The punishment would be severe; That confidant may disappear. You have until midnight. ★I got an ARC from publishers through NetGalley and this is my honest uninfluenced review★ Rating: 6 of 7; 5 of 5; 9 of 10 I'm struggling with the rating. Through the first half, I was sure it would be 4 stars, but things were getting better and I had to bring it up. This book is exactly what we call young-adult. But the thing is. It's a good one. I can't complain about the ya factor when I picked a book that I already knew it was ya. And yes I'm so going to read the next one. It can't be here soon enough. So, Hope's life is kind of as normal as it gets. Then she receives this weird invitation and actually, she doesn't give a shit. But Fate is the most annoying lady and Hope unwillingly accept it. I think is pretty important say that she didn't decide to stay because of some random dark-mysterious-handsome-bad-boy, he may be the one who convinces her that it would be better for her if she stays, but it wasn't because of him. Positives: This book doesn't take dozens of pages before the action starts. Actually, everything starts in the very first chapter, but not in a way that leaves you extremely confused. You have a little context, things start to happen, you have a little more context and then everything is happening. I can't be emphatic enough about how I loved it; Also - and it's very important - we are not dealing with a stupid main character. You know, all these characters that make you wanna be inside the book and slap them? Not her. And I loved the friendship here, I'm all in for friends like that. Ending: Well, there's some wild idea. The main character is not dead. I would probably be ranting like crazy here if she was, but you know it really doesn't mean we didn't have plot twists in the very ending. Also, I had seen nothing that made me thought it was a trilogy. Until the end. So yeah I'm pretty much annoyed. Especially because honestly, what an ending without an ending! Downsides: the character in general could be deeper, there was a lot of possibilities here and too little development; that may sound like bitching, but I dislike first-person narrators. I don't mind having just one pov all the time, but the first-person speech really annoys me. Side note: There were a few things that made me remember of other series, and it doesn't actually bother me, but annoys a little. Also, pretty hard to read a book with that much Greek mythology when I didn't know the English names for all these characters, so the Wikipedia tab on Kindle was definitely my best friend through this book; I hate Hades like the big bad guy just because he's the god of death, it would always be way more interesting if he was some deep interesting character.
