As the door creaked open, Luka was beyond grateful to be home. He kicks off his shoes and drops his coat, unbothered to pick it up. Right now, all he cared about was getting to you.

He needed you. Especially after today.

Luka wandered around your home, only to find you in bed, quietly reading. Wordlessly, he stepped over and climbed in beside you. Luka draped an arm over your waist, dropping his head onto your shoulder. ".. hi." ".. hi," Luka parrots. "Missed you." "I'm trying my hardest. I'm trying to be good for everyone, y'know? be my best? but.." Luka shrugs again, sighing. ".. i'm just so tired. you won't leave me," he asks, "right?" "right," you nod, "never. I love you. Whatever happened, I'm here for you."

Luka nods quietly. ".. I had an okay day," Luka speaks up after a second. "busy. I took my meds, as promised, and ate a decent-sized meal."

besides my friends and family, i shared my asexuality to my aunt and baby cousin,,,,, they were supportive but kept being skeptic like my peers would saying this is temporary 💀 that i need to get laid asap which bothered me sm,,, my cousin now (a party, club going personality) too has engaged in activities with her exes since she was a preteen and im the only one in the fam who knows (desi household is no joke) and im worried for her safety though she seems independent but i do feel concerned and wonder if i should let her be because she has been distant and lord knows who she is with next,,,,she's much much younger but coming from a wealthy family kinda looks down on me and for not having any relationship experiences so distanced herself from me which hurts,,, bottom line i feel ostracized to a degree by people i care about and there is this insane pressure to have to talk about my trauma and issues around sex,,, as they say it's a man's birth right and they all want it at some point and so will your crush or men will leave you the minute they get that repulsion??😓

i might consider it for my man someday but i don't want it to affect my relationship with men??

Your apartment was having emergency repairs done to it, thanks to a pipe freezing and bursting. You only just moved to town to work as a secretary for Stark Industries, you really only knew your uncle Tony, so naturally, that’s where you went to stay. Tony was throwing another one of his parties, surprise.. The rest of his ‘team’ were there and while you enjoyed meeting them, you just kind of clicked with Steve the best. You’re both quiet.. Reserved. Not a fan of huge gatherings at all. He actually found you at one point during said party, sitting out on the balcony of the tower and stargazing. He’d wandered out to get some fresh air and you struck up a conversation. You’ve always been into astronomy and the like, so you were telling him the stories behind the constellations and pointing them out and whether you knew it or not, he was hanging on your every word.

Over the next few days, the two of you always just seemed to find each other. If you were in a room together, you always caught yourself looking up just in time to meet his gaze. While he may be reserved and a bit old fashioned, Steve just isn’t the kind of man who is going to bother hiding the fact that he’s staring at you. And he’s too blunt to hide the fact that he’s flirting with you, although you don’t really pick up on that at first…

You’re grabbing coffee before work and you happen to run into him coming back from his morning run with Sam. When Sam kind of laughs and mentions that Steve talks about you a lot and it’s nice to finally meet you, it does kind of make you all weak in the knees and you actually feel yourself blushing. But you also have enough sense to dismiss it as Steve just telling one friend about another. Steve’s kind of grumpy about Sam’s teasing, but he kind of shrugs it off. You wind up getting talked into breakfast with Steve and Sam because Steve realizes that you haven’t eaten yet and he insists that you eat before you go to work. Then he winds up walking you to the office, too. He gets hit on by one of the other secretaries but he kind of like… Laughs her off? But it’s because he’s made his mind up, he wants to pursue you. You’re surprised when you walk out of the building after you’re off work for the day and you find him waiting. Leaned against that old motorcycle of his and grinning as you approach. He talks you into grabbing a bite at a diner near the Tower, and then insists on escorting you back to your own place since you were finally able to go home.

You two spend so much time together that Natasha finally corners you up and asks if there’s something going on. Which your uncle hears and says “There better not be! I told the guy to leave you alone.” which prompts you to kind of tease him and laugh it off before answering Natasha when he’s left the room. “There isn’t… but lately I feel like I wouldn’t mind at all if there was.” Natasha kind of teases you about your ‘crush’ but she tells you that she thinks Steve feels the same way and she points out that it’s a ‘new world’.. Meaning maybe you should make the first move. Just the thought has you flustered and perplexed. So you put the idea out of your head for a while and things continue at a sweet and slow pace between you and Steve.

He asks you on your first actual date around July. He takes you to a fireworks show at a little park nearby and there’s music playing and he asks you to dance despite nobody else around you two dancing. When he helps you off the blanket on the ground, he pulls you completely against him and there’s this.. Look in his eyes. “What?” you’re giggling when you ask, but then Steve mutters something about not caring what your uncle thinks and he crashes his mouth against yours.

If you spent a lot of time together before, you’re spending practically every second together after that date. And Tony, bless his heart, he’s a big baby about it. A huuuge baby. He practically raised you, so you’re the closest he has to a child until he finally has his own and even though you’re an adult, he still feels really protective. 

He corners Steve up and they have a ‘serious discussion’ (™) about everything. Steve is honest. He tells your uncle that he has nothing but good intentions and this seems to ease Tony. He’s still mildly annoyed whenever you two are snuggled up together watching some old movie or one of your newer television shows at night in the common space everyone uses in the tower, but he can look at you and tell you’re really, really happy.

“MY EYES. ARGH. GET A ROOM.” - this comes from Tony’s mouth a lot. 

A lot of via Facetime PDA and flirting when they’re off on a mission to save the world. Steve keeps a picture of you two with his things and it goes everywhere with him. 

He calls most women doll, but there’s this certain tone he gets when he’s talking to you.. It makes your knees weak every single time. Natasha admits at one point that she knew Steve really liked you a lot because she noticed a distinct difference in the way he says doll to other women and when he says it to you.

He likes to carry you around. He also likes to gently tease you about the fact that you’re as short as you are and fluff your hair. He loves the way you have to stand on your tiptoes and pull him down by the collar of his jacket or his tie if he’s wearing one to kiss him.

You two literally cannot fight, it ends in laughter. Tony remarks at one point that it’s ‘so sweet’ how you two are with each other that he needs to go to the dentist to get checked for cavities.

If you’re working from home, he’s really good about not letting you overwork yourself, distracting you when he thinks you need a break. Rubbing your shoulders while he’s standing behind you.

The man can absolutely cook. And it’s amazing, holy shit. You don’t know where he learned a lot of the stuff he’s made you, but it’s really,really good.

Breakfast in bed whenever you sleep over at his apartment.

Lots of star-gazing and long motorcycle rides.

Also, lots of you worrying whenever he leaves for a mission because you know he won’t back down from anything, no matter how dangerous it may seem. Lots of Steve being a bit overprotective at times, but it being totally adorable.

He’s just such a gentleman.

1. heather havrilesky's books!! i love. love love LOVE. genuinely love. her ask polly column. hers is the only email newsletter im subscribed to that doesnt make me wanna sigh and / or cry whenever i see one in my inbox (emails suck!!). i enjoy her reflections on life, relationships, writing. plus i really like how she can phrase things so beautifully yet simply, just so, just right, to stab me in the heart/hold up a mirror. i actually just ordered myself one of her books. i think her first one?? ive been trying to hold back and not order all of them bc i havent been reading in so long and shouldnt get ahead of myself (but if i finish this one i'll probably get the other ones too) (im actually really excited about her upcoming book foreverland: on the divine tedium of marriage. i mean with a title like that i’ve got to, right?)

2. in the dream house by carmen maria machado. my best friend actually gifted me this book recently and ive made a tiny baby start and it seems very interesting and anything she wants me to read i want to read bc i wanna get to know her inner world, so, yes, i should read this one asap. also it’s fascinating in terms of subject manner and style, so i really, really should read it

3. ive been trying to read the body keeps the score by bessel van der kolk but im going through it soooo terribly slowly!! everyone including my therapist keeps reccing it and i keep waiting for the life changing part of this book but im still struggling through the first chapter to be honest

4. bell hooks’ all about love is just sitting on my book shelf, unread. when will it end

5. there’s some books about serious topics that i genuinely wanna read but havent gotten to yet, or only made little starts in. i think maybe 2022 should be the year i finally start reading lindo bacon’s health at every size. no time like the (near-)present to unlearn internalized fatphobia and diet culture

Does Damien have an Indication too or did he think his sister and he were both Vacant? I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your writing, it's all so gripping!

OH MY GOODNESS THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Truth Breeds Thorns completely took over my NaNoWriMo project and made me love writing again, so any love it gets makes me so happy. I think it’s some of my best work, so it’s great to see that everyone is enjoying it so much.

That last chapter was one of my favorite parts of the story to write, so I’m glad it’s getting such a good response.

I LOVE answering questions about my writing, so THANK YOU for these! This might get a little long, I hope that’s okay…

Okay, so there is a small hint in this most recent chapter (if you take something Mark thinks to himself more literally), and will be in a later one as well, about what Celine’s Indication is, and how it relates to William, so I won’t explicitly say it now.

If it’s not clear enough by then, feel free to ask me again and I’ll say it outright and also will credit @dontworryaboutanything for helping me come up with Celine and William’s Indication in the first place, because I had no clue about what to do for them.

It’s non-physical. Not a mark, or anything visible. I’ll say that much, and I connected it with Celine’s scenes in WKM as well.

As for whether it will persist with Dark or not, I’m not sure yet. The future is still in flux for this particular AU.

In regards to Damien, in the first chapter, when Mark is first told that his flower pain is his Indication, there is brief exposition where he quickly thinks about the mark on Damien’s shoulder that they’re pretty sure will match his soulmate. Damien, however, is hesitant to know who his soulmate is, because he’s pretty sure he’s not straight (I’m trying to leave it open-ended for everyone to interpret, but I personally imagine Damien in my works to be ace and may adjust past works accordingly if I decide to stick with it) and doesn’t know how that will pan out for future relationships.

Even then, there’s clearly a class problem with regards to soulmates for the wealthier populations (an idea one soulmate masterpost AU discussed that I wanted to explore), which is another reason why he’s not really in a hurry to find his soulmate, especially if he wouldn’t be able to be with them in the first place if they aren’t in the same social class. He already witnessed how Mark’s parents threatened disinheritance right off the bat.

One of the reasons Damien is so angry with Mark after finding out about the DA, aside from the already stated stuff in the fic, is because with Mark’s parents out of the way, Mark could easily be with his soulmate with little problems now if not for his marrying Celine. Happy as Damien is to have Mark as a brother, now he wishes Mark just would have WAITED, so the DA wouldn’t have to suffer the way they are now. It angers him how Mark has completely taken for granted the soulmate he doesn’t realize is right in front of him, while Damien is still trapped in a hell of not knowing who his own soulmate is and not knowing if he’d be happy with them or not in the first place. Mark’s uncaring attitude only hurts Damien more because of these underlying factors.

He knows the DA and Mark would have been happy together if certain choices hadn’t been made.

ugh tumblr rlly just had a whole plethora of problems surface up huh!!! re the searching thing, i tried it for myself and had the same problem when i first received the ask. it didnt show up in normal search, but it did when i disabled safe search. I tried again just now and it showed up once more in search results without having to disable safe search so you’ll have to tell me if thats still a problem of sorts!

and ugh im not sure what I can do to help this one, but my usual solution is to try opening the blog in your mobile browser (chrome, safari, etc). its a little less convenient but good when you’re just wanting to read!! its a looks a little more complex for things like reblogging but works just the same to be honest!

phew okay so please please bare with me on this, it's going to be long and rambling and im sure it will jump back and forth a lot so you've had a fair amount of warning :p

im going to start off with the long "essay" posts from yesterday, just to kinda get my foot hold on things c: and guys please understand that in writing this i am really not trying to come off as rude or attackful or anything, and i apologize if i do or if i come off overly "unprofessional" it seems a lot of the time when i try to be super professional i come off as condescending or cold and when i try to be a bit more relaxed im just being silly or unprofessional.

"artists not doing anything for months and then getting to come back whenever they want, taking up a slot that could’ve been an active artist filled with energy and vigor to create instead."

I've seen this mentioned a lot ,, the whole slot thing. the thing is guys, that we don't have a set number of "slots" on staff ,, really we base what we think we need on how efficiently the staff we currently have is functioning. I know recently [the last month or so] things have been a little slow but you have to remember that it was the end of the year, many staff members [and heck people in general] we're busy with finals/vacations/family/the holidays and a whole slew of other things. Bringing in more staff during the holiday season because there a bit of a dip in activity doesn't really make a whole bunch of sense in my opinion because its just the natural ebb and flow of how things go, it happens every year.

I'll be the first to admit ,, this is actually a bit of a problem ,, it doesn't happen with every artists but I do understand that sometimes owed work gets forgotten, especially when the artist keeps taking on more and more in an attempt to keep up with demand that the community has created. we are aware of this, and myself and Karmel have been discussing it for quite awhile and throwing ideas back and forth for a way to manage it ,, at the time I think we have a pretty solid solution and it after a bit more discussing and working out the kinks it should be able to be implemented fairly soon and shouldn't take too long to see the effects c: i do apologize to anyone that has been on the brunt end of having to wait. one thing you can always do though is message the artist directly to see whats up, and if you don't get an answer then you can always come to myself or Karmel [or if you're noticing something that you aren't a part of you can even submit it to us anonymously via ask or tumblr!!

HM customs have always been a bit of tricky situation since it was switched so that only offical team members could do them and I do apologize that it was never fully explored how to best impliment this system. in the beginning i dont think it was set up to handle a community the size of which we have and hasn't ever really been revised to help fix it. with that being said though we do have a fancy new thread you may want to check out !! its still in the works as all the artists find their spots but there are already several artists who have started using it if you would like to keep track. its called the <a href="http://www.chickensmoothie.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=87&t=3701780">Kalon Artist Alley</a>!! essentially every artist on the Kalon team has a post here and they will be able to detail what work they are open for, lay out what projects they currently have, and list any examples or prices [as they may apply] for their work! with this it should make it a lot more easy to find an artist that is open to HM customs and browse just who you might want to partner with!

I do apologize for any questions that have went unanswered! Its really unfortunate that we've gotten this reputation, but I do swear to you that it is never intentional! Sometimes I so wish I could just show you guys a day in the life of the staff chat, it is honestly off the hook 24/7 with people chatting about all kinds of different business from questions to designs/growths/rule breaking and a whole slew of everything in between! And often times our inboxes are just the same, I know mine is! Things fall through the cracks sometimes in a community so big and id be willing to bet that more often than not we actually have discussed the question at hand and it may just be that the conversation rolled over to something new that distracted the original staff member handling it from responding to you and then never picked it back up. that is something that we will have to start working a lot harder on, but like i said, it is absolutely never intentional that we are forgetting responses. if you dont hear back usually within 72 hours it is absolutely okay for you to resend the message or to send it to a new staff member !!

like you mentioned, i kinda touched on this one in the first response, however I would also like to point something else out. while i dont consider Kalons to be a business and myself and Karmel dont run them as such, even if you are looking at this from a real world employment there are actually a lot of different levels of activity that are acceptable!! normally you have full time ,, part time ,, and PRN [as needed] employees all working for the same company. my artists are just like that in a lot of respects and its completely unfair to say they dont deserve compensation for what they do when they are able to do it. they aren't taking up a slot from anyone else and they are still providing amazing designs and input into the community ,, heck a lot of the time when an artist is unable to make designs they are still active in the staff chat and in other areas that may not be their primary duty as an artist.

you are absolutely right !! we have said this a lot and that's because we really do mean it !! and when we talk about staff being too big to manage we dont actually mean that all those names are just too much, we mean that the active people that we are currently managing is quite a lot !! looking back on our activity documentation for the last 6 months there has consistently been an average of 30+ active artists working !! and that not even including our mods or myself and Karmel ,, for two people who have adult lives off the internet that is a lot to manage and we are trying our absolute best while still not spreading ourselves too thin because then the issues that you have already expressed just become more exaggerated when we have to provide them with even less attention than we already do. and while we think that the staff we have right now is very strong and putting out a lot of work already [did you know that last month alone over 200 designs were put into the community just from the nursery and main adopts ?? and over the last 6 months over 2,000 designs were?] we have opened the nursery search again and may soon be opening the main artists search as well to alleviate some of the demand that you guys are throwing out there c: 

I'm not going to quote any of the last point as its quite long but to a degree I would like to agree, just in all honesty. I haven't been able to be a real part of the actually community for quite some time since becoming a co-owner and in that time from the position i am in I have seen a lot of stuff. I know that it may seem like no body cares but really I think the issue is just in a community this large in general it can be hard to find a foot hold. now im not making any excuses for those that go out of their way to ignore everyone or only talk to their friend group, but I do also know a lot of people that try their hardest to talk to new people or as many people as they can. i wish there were some easy clear cut way that I could address this and have it fixed in just a couple of days but the sad truth is that you are right, this is more than just what we as staff can tackle by ourselves and really takes the effort of the entire community but we are trying to promote it !! our events have shifted from just token grabs to be more development and cooperation based and often offer or require the interaction with community members that you may not know !! while I dont have any wonderful news for how we plan to fix it please know that we see the rift and we do want to fix it ,, if you or anything really has suggestions or just wants to talk about the experiences that made their introduction to the community better/worse i would honestly really urge you to come talk to me or any staff member. i promise you for all the anxiety it can cause to message one of us we are really just a group of massive dweebs and our side chat would definately prove that. we don't ever aim to make anyone uncomfortable or to be rude when responding to you guys and i apologize if it has ever come off that way when dealing with one of us with Kalon related things. one good thing about such a big staff is that if you have an issue with one of us you can always find someone else <3

“I just don’t think it’s very fair of you to blindside me with all the shitty stuff from our past without some kind of warning!” Dan protests, throwing his flat keys down on to the dining room table. He shrugs his coat off, irritated, and throws it onto a nearby chair. “In front of all our friends!”

“Oh, so I’m just supposed to shove all that stuff to one side and never think about it again?” Phil asks, sounding incredulous. Dan rolls his eyes at the theatrical way Phil is behaving. “I’m never allowed to bring it up, or speak about it, or think about it in case it makes you feel guilty and miserable for a split second, is that right?”

“Obviously that’s not what I’m saying, Phil.” Dan says icily, crossing his arms. “You don’t have to be so... so...”

“So what?” Phil prompts, one hand curled around his own set of keys, still. 

Dan just glares, lips pressed into a thin slash across his chin. He’s not going to finish that sentence. It won’t do either of them any good; besides, they’ve both had a couple of glasses of wine. 

They’ve been out for a meal at a posh sushi place for Hazel’s birthday. It’s a place they know well, a menu they’ve ordered from frequently, and friends that they both enjoy being around. 

Dan has no idea why, on this occasion, things turned sour. Out of all the many ways Phil could have answered Louise’s innocent, funny question of ‘what’s the worst pick-up line you’ve tried on someone?’, he had to say ‘well, that’s a difficult one because for the last eight years I've been desperately in love with someone who made it extremely clear they didn’t want me back until very recently. So, I haven’t tried out an actual pick up line in forever.’

His answer had stunned the table into an awkward hush. Dan had been so taken aback by the nonchalant way in which Phil casually dropped this information into the lighthearted conversation - with people who know absolutely nothing about it, save for Louise - that he’d actually choked on an edamame bean. 

They all knew, of course, that Phil was talking about Dan. They must have. 

Suddenly, remembering the stunted, jolty attempts people were forced to make to kickstart the conversation again, to move it into safer territory, Dan doesn’t feel quite so generous. 

He decides to finish his sentence, after all. 

“You don’t have to be so childish about this whole thing.” Dan says before he can think it through properly. “It’s over now. We’re married, we’re together, you have me. Why are you insisting on picking at the scabs? And without even so much as a hint to me beforehand that it’s on your mind at all!” 

“Childish?” Phil repeats, his voice soft and hurt. 

Dan’s heart sinks, and he regrets the choice of adjective immediately. “No, well, no-”

But it’s too late to take it back. The word hangs in the air, taunting them both. 

Dan scrambles to think of a way to repair the situation, but he’s not fast enough. Phil, still wearing his coat, turns back the way he came, keys still clasped in his fist, and walks out of the door. 

Fuck.

Phil has no idea where he’s going. He hadn’t really thought further ahead than getting out of the flat before the argument turned even nastier. 

That’s the problem with arguing with Dan; he’s a hothead. He can’t seem to catch the words in his mind long enough to think them through, he just spits them out, harsh and unfiltered, then regrets it. 

The wind whips against him, and Phil draws the lapels of his coat around himself a little tighter. He’d been so looking forward to getting back home after the dinner tonight. They’d left the heating on, and Phil had been feeling pleasantly tipsy all evening until it got awkward. He’d been thinking about how, later, he could drag a wine-sweetened Dan underneath the covers, kiss him in all the places that made him squirm until neither of them felt the cold anymore. 

He sighs, taking a random turning into a side street he’s never walked down before. He wonders if he should put his hood up or something, as the worst thing would be getting recognised right now. It’s unlikely to happen, though, in the dark. 

Childish. 

That was the word Dan had used to describe him. It echoes through the wide, hollow rooms of Phil’s usually thriving brain, echoing off the cold, stone walls. 

Is that truly how Dan perceives him? Immature and thoughtless? Attention-seeking, maybe? Or sulking, to get his way? 

A shiver runs through his body, and his teeth begin to chatter. He steps through the milky, pale yellow splash of light from an overhead streetlamp, glad of the fleeting absence of darkness. 

He hadn’t meant to say what he did, when he answered Louise. He didn’t think. It’s not like him to say things without thinking, either - but he supposes being around Dan so much must mean he picks up on some of his habits, both good and bad. 

Just now, Dan had said that Phil had blindsided him with the answer. That he’d failed to let Dan know that it was playing on his mind, and that if he’d pulled Dan aside, maybe tried to talk it through a little, things would have been okay. 

But Dan doesn’t understand. The ‘Birthday Sex Era’, as Phil now thinks of it, isn’t something that fleetingly pops into his head now and again. He’s thinking of it always. There’s never a moment that it’s not there, stubborn and loud, a great sea-monster lurking in the ocean of Phil’s love for Dan, its tentacles protruding into every single memory they have as a pair. 

Phil isn’t able to just carve the Birthday Sex monster away. It’s too entwined in what they are, in what they were. It’s part of him, and it’s part of Dan, and it’s a part of both of them, together. 

So, when the delicious Californian white wine is flowing, and Phil is comfortable and relaxed around his favourite, trusted friends, it’s only natural that he’ll answer something asked of him with total honesty. It just so happens that the honest answer he gave tonight was one that the Birthday Sex monster has wrapped itself around. Phil couldn’t help but tell Louise the truth. And the truth had been that Phil, for a long time, was simply not interested in ‘picking up’ anyone but Dan, and that Dan had - somewhat cruelly - encouraged this. 

Two shadowy figures turn into the street, starting to walk towards him. Phil is wearing his contacts, but he still can’t really make them out. Not wanting to linger too long in a deserted, back street with two unfamiliar strangers late at night, Phil turns, walking briskly back the way he came. 

It’s freezing tonight, anyway. Phil’s had a little walk to gather his thoughts. 

It’s time to go home.

Phil tries to unlock the door quietly, half hoping the inevitable confrontation can be postponed a little longer, until he’s shucked off his coat and shoes, at least. 

He manages to stay quiet as he lets himself in, and takes his time about removing his outer garments. He runs a hand through his hair, shuddering as his body soaks up the warmth of the flat, and sighs. 

Belatedly, he realises he can hear a soft, enchanting melody, seeping through the floorboards of the upstairs hallway. Intrigued, as ever, by Dan’s decision to play the piano, Phil follows the haunting tune.

Strangely, as he pads up the stairs, Phil realises that he’s humming along. He pauses in his step, head cocked to listen harder when he deduces that he actually knows this particular song. 

He shuts his eyes, still humming as he tries in vain to place it. Is it a video game theme song, he wonders? Dan is very fond of learning every score of the Final Fantasy soundtrack. But somehow Phil knows it isn’t that, this time. 

His brain aches in protest, complaining that it’s too befuddled with alcohol and post-argument tension to work out what the song is. 

Phil rolls his eyes at his own mind, then continues up the stairs, deciding he’ll just have to remember to ask Dan once they’ve resolved this little tiff. 

It’s as Phil approaches their bedroom, that it dawns on him. The realisation tumbles over him in a gush, and he sucks in a breath, stopping in his tracks. He stands in the doorway, not daring to move in case he interrupts. 

Watching Dan play is a performance in itself, regardless of the music he produces. His back is straight, just as his evil teacher drilled into him that it must be all that time ago. His fingers dance, light as petals skimming the surface of a lake, over the keys. 

Dan hasn’t noticed Phil’s arrival, he’s sure. 

The tune begins soft, then sweeps into a whirlwind of complexity, soaring into something so swooping, so magnificent, so deep and vibrant and pure that it sends Phil’s stomach crashing to the floor. 

After a while, it peters out, trilling gently, teasing the growing quiet with more until it stops entirely. 

Dan hunches forwards, his forehead pressing against the stand as his fingers curl into fists. 

“I haven’t heard you play that in a while,” Phil says, trying to keep his voice soft so he won’t startle Dan, but the younger man jumps anyway, spinning to face him. 

There are obvious, shiny tear-tracks over his cheeks.  

“Phil,” he breathes, clearly amazed, “you’re- you’re back.” 

Phil shrugs, shuffling into the room a little. “Where else would I go?”

Dan is silent for a minute, his top teeth trapping his lower lip like he’s trying to button his mouth closed. It doesn’t work. The words burst out anyway, tumbling from his lips in a messy, unprocessed garble.

“I’msosorry-”Dan starts, eyes desperate. “I just- like, I don’t even know why I would say that- I don’t- obviously I don’t think you’re childish, but youknowwhatI’mlike-”

“Dan.” Phil interrupts, gently. 

“And especially after drinking- like, I knew I should’ve said no to that second glass, but-”

“Dan, stop,” Phil urges, moving towards him. 

Sitting down on the piano stool, scooted up against Dan’s side seems to startle him into silence, so Phil takes the opportunity to speak. 

“I’m not really sure who’s right or wrong here.” He confesses, shrugging one shoulder. 

Dan rolls his eyes. “Come on, Phil, there’s no need to become a martyr just because I’m getting a bit weepy-”

Phil smiles, brushing a thumb under each of Dan’s eyes, rubbing away the moisture collected there. “I’m not being a martyr.” Phil turns to face him as much as possible on the stool, trying to get the words straight in his head. “I just think that this - our situation - is a peculiar one. I don’t quite know how to handle it best, y’know?”

Dan nods, chewing his lip again. 

“I don’t want you to feel like you have to be constantly on edge in case I spring a guilt trip on you from nowhere,” Phil says, completely honest about this. “But I also don’t really know how to deal with all the leftover... stuff still inside me from that time. The Birthday Sex time.”

“What kind of ‘stuff’?” Dan asks cautiously, sounding like he doesn’t really want to know the answer. Honestly, Phil is pretty sure Dan won’t like the answer either. 

Phil swallows. “Hurt. Anger. Heartbreak. Insecurity. Anxiety.” Phil swallows again. “You know. Stuff.”

Dan takes a deep breath, but nods again, seeming to understand. “So... you’re saying that ‘stuff’ might sort of... leak out at random, inconvenient times?”

Phil quirks a smile at him. “I’m going to try really, really hard not to let that happen. I don’t want to hurt you, or cause arguments. And you’re right, y’know? What you said earlier - it’s over. I have you now.”

His hand travels absent-mindedly to Dan’s hip, ducking beneath the jumper he’s wearing until his fingers skim the tattoo he knows is inked there. 

Dan shakes his head. “I was a prat earlier. Please don’t take any of what I said to heart.”

Phil chuckles at him, and Dan gives him a serious look.

“No, seriously Phil.” He says, making Phil chuckle more. “If anyone’s a fucking child around here it’s me. I’m the one who threw a god damn bitch fit at you for bringing up your own perfectly valid feelings of betrayal. I mean, what right do I have to yell at you for that when it’s all my fault you ever felt that awful to begin wi-”

Phil kisses him to shut him up, mostly, but also because he’s tipsy and sad and bullying himself for things he’s apologised for so many times. Sometimes, the best way to draw Dan out of his own abusive head is to remind him how much he is loved, despite whatever he may think of himself. 

When Phil draws away, there’s a surprised, sweet expression on Dan’s pretty face. Phil smiles at the sight of it, curling his hand into Dan’s jumper. 

“Your playing was so lovely,” Phil tells him wistfully. 

Dan ducks his head, smiling bashfully. “Thanks. I think that’s the only thing I can play without any mistakes.” 

“Will you play it again?” Phil asks, resting his head on Dan’s shoulder.

Dan pretends to look exasperated, rolling his eyes. “You’re requesting your own song for the second time?”

Phil nods, beaming, and Dan shakes his head fondly, but kisses him nonetheless. He places his hands over the keys, and Phil lights up, settling down to listen, his eyes fluttering closed. 

“As if I could ever say no.” Dan murmurs, then starts to play.
