Man, I really regretted looking up Undertale Characters and Undertale Sans analyses on this here site:

Like, there is a reason I avoid doing that more often than not on tumblr (and some other sites), because a lot of the time I just across takes/analyses/etc. that I just really (personally) don’t agree with and/or like.

Even by creators that I can, have, do, and/or did like, and seemingly “well-liked”/”well-accepted” and/or “popular” takes.

Disclaimer:  If you like or agree with any these takes or similar ones; that is fine, we all have different opinions.  I just tend to not really like these takes.

The takes in question.  These are just UT/DR takes and ones I have mainly come across today and fairly recently (some of these takes are actually done by fans of these characters; that doesn’t mean I like or agree with them still though (putting the rest under a “read more” cut, because this gets pretty long, and in case people don’t want to read about these takes):

“Toriel is homophobic” (just uggghh, no.  Just no).

“Sans is useless and/or serves no purpose (in the game, battle, narratively, thematically, and/or etc.)” (basically) (this, just isn’t true at all, and I really, really (like, just a lot), hate this take/these takes).

“Sans is weak” (also hate this take).

“Sans is just some guy and/or a nobody now”, because he now can’t be a badass and cool and powerful and smart (which, he is), while also being dorky and edgy and vague and a generally nuanced and a flawed person with layers.  I guess.  Not allowed.  Talk about fandom over-correction (imo).

“Toriel is just a Mom and basically has no other character traits or flaws.” pretty much (Just no and is a huge oversimplification of her character).

“Chara is abusive/Chara abused Asriel” (Chara, who is also, just a iteral child.  And someone who was probably traumatized and hurt in the past.  Chara wasn’t perfect, but to say this, I just can’t agree with it really).

“Papruys is now the strongest character in Undertale” (he is strong and powerful in his own right, but this is just unfair to the other characters, and is kind of over-stretching stuff imo.  Like some Sans take(s); I also mostly blame this on fandom over-correction).

“To make Paps interesting we now have to make him edgy” basically (less a statement, and more a trend I see sometimes).  There are many ways you can make a character interesting for instance.  And 2nd of all; why try to make a non-character edgy, when we got more actual edgy characters like Sans, Chara, Flowey/Asriel, Gaster I guess, Muffet, I guess, heck, maybe even Toriel, and/or etc.?  Not saying Paps isn’t interesting btw; he is.  Just saying some people seem to only think they can make him interesting by making him edgy.  Not even against edgy Paps completely; I’m not.  Just trying to say there are other ways to do things/you could do things.

“That somehow Flowey/Asriel (and in the case of some fan stories; Gaster too), is a better person than Sans is” (don’t get me wrong, Sans is a morally questionable/morally grey character (and I love that about him).  But the amount the shit he gets sometimes, while arguably, characters who are just as bad, worse, and/or (more) ill-intentioned than Sans get more of a pass is just like, “what?”

“Flowey did nothing wrong” basically (this comment kind of goes hand-in-hand with what I say in the previous paragraph.  I do get he is technically a child still, and he is a good character.  But like, he still did many, many things wrong).

Not really a character, just a take I didn’t agree with at all, “Undertale’s meta aspects and time travel isn’t needed and basically make the game worse, and game would have been just as good, if not better without them”, (and I am like just "????”, about those things.  Those things are so important to Undertale man, and they don’t make the game worse, they make it better.  Like, what do you even mean?)

Etc., etc.

So yeah, really didn’t like these takes at all.  And I mean, AT ALL.

Welp, at least the somewhat sour taste these left in my mouth hopefully helps me more careful while searching for and/or looking up analyses, metas, etc. on tumblr and/or etc.

I have hopefully, learned my lessons now.

An Undertale/Deltarune Theory Complaint:

Alright I wanna bitch about UT/DR fan interpretations again. Basically, I feel like the idea that Kris is being puppeteered by the player (and that they're aware of this to any degree), which I was already not a huge fan of, is now getting retroactively applied to the protagonist of Undertale.

That sucks guys. That sucks so fucking hard. And not only does it suck, but it actually helps illustrate just why it would suck in DR too:

It retroactively fucks up the tone of the entire game!

where's the part in the where Sans is like "but the mere act of playing this game is bad so fuck you for that?" Where is any thematic implication of that being an important element anywhere, outside of genocide route, and maybe overtly deadly choices in general? Where's the finger-waggle? Where is it??

Certainly if it was anywhere it'd be in the place where this line gets spoken and you are then morally judged for your actions. Right?

This isn't the sort of thing you have to read deeply between the lines on. Yes, a lot of the game is reliant upon the player's faulty initial assumption that the name they chose in the start is the character you're playing as.

It's a cool twist for sure. And this particular moment really hammers home that, yes, Frisk is their own person. But it comes across less as some kind of "gotcha" admonishment and more just, like, the clear logical conclusion of the twist that's already been pretty much spelled out at this point anyway. That the name you chose was for somebody else entirely.

Hell, after this revelation happens, you're then given more time to walk around as Frisk and talk to people. If at this point you're supposed to be thinking that controlling Frisk is an inherently unsavory thing at all times, wouldn't that be an inherently bad segment? Wouldn't the only correct choice be to rush out the door towards the credits as fast as possible?

Under that understanding, the only moral choice outside of not playing at all is a non-violent speed run.

Maybe I'm not understanding popular fan theories correctly and am vastly overestimating how many people actually think this whole "player puppeteering" thing retroactively applies to Frisk too. But the mere thought of it really gets my panties in a twist I won't lie.

Also,

At this point, you know full well that Frisk is their own person. Yet, here you are, dealing with one last choice prompt. How can there be anything morally questionable about this? Hell, even acting with the knowledge that Frisk is their own person and doing your best to pick what you think they'd want... it gets you nowhere. Which answer is correct? The first? The Second? Neither? Both?

I don't think you're supposed to dwell on that. If anything it just further hammers home how Frisk has shit going on you're probably not even aware of. I think that normally, the player and the player character are kinda indistinguishable, especially in-universe. It's not until you start doing logically absurd violent shit that the game bends over backwards to make the player feel like a fucked up asshole, as opposed to Frisk. To the point where the spiritual embodiment of numbers going up for their own sake pops out and calls you a psycho just like them.

LIke, this aspect of the writing isn't subtle? I really don't see room for any other interpretation. If you have to imagine the player as some distinct aspect of the game world even during a peaceful playthrough, then I'd stick with my interpretation from my Kris writeup (linked at the beginning of this) where you're, like, some part of their subconscious that helps them decide shit. Or a headmate that they probably aren't aware of, if the player has to be something resembling a distinct person.

Oh, also: if both options in that final choice prompt are equally valid, then that really bolsters my idea that the choices given to you are coming from the character, rather than something foisted upon them out of nowhere. Like, again, you're just helping decide. If they wanna just talk, then they just talk. Like when they give their name to Asriel. Kris is handled exactly the same way. Deltarune is just written with you knowing that Kris is their own person from the very start, where Undertale isn't. That's it.

Which means...

... Frisk is absolutely the kind of person to consider all of these options at once, lol. They were effectively a less edgy test run for Kris, I think.

Preface

This was compiled by two friends on little sleep and an unwillingness to cite sources. It’s been six years since Undertale came out and like two days since Deltarune Ch 2 came out, so I ask for a bit of forgiveness.

Please tear this apart. Many of the insane ideas presented here are gonna be stated like it’s fact, but I want to be clear that I am fully aware that they’re not. As the incantation goes, it’s a theory. A game theory.

UT means Undertale. DR means Deltarune.

PT 1: Undertale’s Comparisons to Deltarune

From the beginning, Deltarune has felt strange. In DR, well-loved characters carry out facsimiles of the roles they played in UT, and the UT characters are usually in a better situation. For example, Asgore runs a failing flower shop in DR, while he is a kingly gardener in UT. In DR, Mettaton has no fans and no apparent glamour as he does in UT. Catty and Bratty aren’t friends. Aaron has no muscles. Blooky is a cop. As such, DR almost feels like a stilted version of UT, where they are no longer characters in a wild, better fantasy.

The most interesting differences are in time and in death. In DR, Gerson is dead. He was the previous history teacher who taught at the school Kris and Asriel attends/attended. Rabbit Girl walks Cinnamon in UT Snowdin. In DR, we see a larger Cinnamon who complains that his sister no longer walks him because she grew up.

There are also the Amalgamates. The graveyard in DR has three gravestones beside Gerson’s: Crystal, Shyra, and Muttler. Each of them correlate to one of the Amalgamates from UT: Snowdrake’s mother, Shyren’s sister, and Endogeny respectively.

It is also important to note that monsters in DR have not yet used magic in the light world. Susie, Noelle, and Ralsei have only been shown to use magic in the dark worlds. As far as fans know, monster magic is something that only exists within the dark worlds and is nonexistent otherwise. There is also no confirmation if monsters turn to dust in DR.

In short, just remember that Undertale feels like a glamorized past version of the town we see in Deltarune.

PT 2: Ralsei = Asriel

Or, more precisely, they are both mental constructions of the same person: Asriel from DR. If this doesn’t make sense, read on.

The basic similarities are their names, appearances, and speech.

DR Asriel is older than Kris and has gone off to college but is returning to visit soon. He was fairly popular and successful. He is very penitent: he regularly confessed inconsequential “sins” to the local priest.

What do we know about Ralsei? Honestly not much. However, we do know that he knows a lot. Almost all explanations of how combat, the dark world, or the fountains function come from Ralsei. He is also determined to become friends with Kris and tries to be kind to whoever he meets.

Suspend your disbelief, but what if Ralsei is Asriel? It would explain where he comes from; he’s a lightner so he has to come from Kris’s world. And due to his age, he may have discovered and explored the Dark World before Kris did. That’s why he knows/explains so much.

It’s shown that monsters are capable of creating dark worlds: Queen tries to make Noelle make one and Berdly almost does so in DR Ch 2. In both cases, Queen and Berdly were trying to make an ideal world for themselves, suggesting that those who make a dark world have some sway over what’s within it. Ch 1 and Ch 2’s dark worlds were created by The Knight until they were abandoned.

Here comes the theory. Either Asriel or Kris created Ch 1 and Ch 2’s dark worlds so that Kris can finally be the center of the story and make friends. Ralsei repeatedly shows that he wants to be closer to Kris, which would make sense since he’s gone off to college and has not seen Kris in a while.

This is a minor point but In UT, Asgore was shown to suck at naming things. It seems Asriel inherits that trait by naming himself Flowey in UT. So if DR Asriel changed his name to Ralsei to fool his own sibling it would be pretty fucking funny. Also interesting to note, Ralsei has prominent pink horns. In flavor text, we learn that Kris previously owned a pair of fake red horns to fit into the Dreemur family.

The world of Undertale, on the other hand, is Asriel’s original Dark World, based on the entire DR town. The entrance to it is the bunker at the bottom of the town, leading underground.

PT 3: Undertale as Asriel’s Creation

Remember this?

In short, just remember that Undertale feels like a glamorized past version of the town we see in Deltarune.

That’s why.

Gerson is alive in UT because he was alive when Asriel was in town. Cinnamon is small and is walked by his sister because that’s how Asriel remembered him. Toriel and Asgore are queen and king in UT because to a child, that’s how parents feel like. Librarby because that's a hard word to spell as a child. Magic apparently exists only in dark worlds, including UT. Perhaps Asgore sucks at naming things because it’s really Asriel doing it.

UT Pacifist is a story of hope and change brought on by Frisk, an outside source. As an example, Toriel and Asgore have a chance to reconnect in UT Pacifist while in DR Toriel clearly wants absolutely nothing to do with Asgore. UT Pacifist Flowey finds someone who truly believes there is good in him, despite his efforts to appear otherwise.

UT Neutral is a static world: forever hoping for freedom that it can never achieve. In fact, if UT is a dark world, that would explain how Neutral Frisk can pass through the barrier without fusing their soul with a monster. It’s just that darkners couldn’t pass into the real world unaided while lightners could travel freely.

UT Genocide is the culmination of Asriel’s worst fears about himself, ending in even Flowey’s own demise as he realizes there are people far crueler than he can imagine.

UT was once an ideal world (because it was a dark world) until both Chara and Asriel died on the same day, which plunged the kingdom into despair. Perhaps, back when DarkWorld!Asriel was a goat and not a flower, he attempted to bring Chara, a darkner representing Kris, out into the real world but shit went south. It’s shown that darkners lose their forms while in the light world and turn to stone in other dark worlds. From that guilt, Asriel believed himself to be irredeemable and turned into Flowey.

Flowey is the person that Asriel believed himself to be: vile and manipulative and without a soul. This lines up with his guilt issues irl. Also in DR, Asriel’s computer shows a final boss with rainbow wings, which describes his final form in UT.

DR has repeated themes about inevitability and having no agency within the “normal” world. Ch 1 and Ch 2 end pretty much the same no matter what route you choose. However, what does get influenced by player action are the dark worlds: fantastical adventures created by lightners to appease their own desires or, perhaps, to reflect their own issues. As such, UT contrasts with DR because it is a dark world: somewhere capable of change.

So, the Amalgamates. Asriel harbors a lot of useless guilt as shown by his confessions to the church. Amalgamates could be personifications of that senseless guilt/dread associated with dead people you knew from afar. Alphys’s overwhelming shame and guilt over being unable to save the amalgamates may mirror Asriel’s own feelings as an overly sympathetic teen.

What about the fallen children? Due to the flowers in DR Asgore’s shop that correlate with soul colors and Toriel’s dislike of Asgore, I imagine that Asgore fucked up with some human children at some point in their relationship. This is also considering the book in the DR Librarby about raising humans, which contains a photo of unfamiliar humans that Kris seems uncomfortable with.

What about Sans and Papyrus? In DR, they only recently moved into town. So if Asriel made this dark world when they were younger, they shouldn’t exist in UT. I theorize that Sans and Papyrus were added to the world after its initial creation, which fits with how the UT brothers just moved into Snowdin and almost nothing is known about their history. UT Sans perhaps noticed this discrepancy and figured out that there is something not quite right with the reality he lived in. He realized he was a darkner with little to no agency compared to Flowey, and later to the Anomaly.

Gaster and the Lost Souls may have been one of those discrepancies. Glitch sound effects associated with them play when you call in the dark world and in front of the bunker in DR.

Jevil and Spamton are rather interesting as well. I believe they are darkners who have realized the limits of their world. Jevil talks specifically about “CHAOS,” which Ralsei says may potentially end the world, and attaining “freedom,” referring to the dark world he resides in as a prison.

Very interesting dialogue states that the body that Scamton NEO inhabits was once loved greatly by a lightner, then was abandoned for some reason. Due to Scamton’s connections to Mettaton, both in name and theme song, that lightner might’ve been Mettaton himself. This does not necessarily mean that Mettaton entered the dark world or created it; a representation of his desire for a certain body might’ve been one of the objects used to create the dark world. Again, UT Mettaton is his ideal self, aided by Asriel’s imagination, while DR Mettaton hasn’t realized his dreams at all.

Scamton also is very fixated on freedom like Jevil. He tries to take Kris’s soul. This parallels UT Monsters’ desire to take Frisk’s soul to escape the underground. Perhaps Darkners who take Lightner’s souls are able to travel to the real world.

PT 4: The Anomaly

The anomaly is the Player, or the red heart.

UT Genocide Sans mentions an anomaly that fucks up timelines and pinpoints them on you. In DR, Kris performs individual actions when they rip their soul (the red heart). They are being possessed by you, and they rip you out so they can have agency and steal some bscotch pie. Chara is not someone possessing Genocide Frisk in UT. Rather, they are a representation of the Player’s absolute control over both Frisk and Kris.

So who is Frisk? In the world of this absolutely bonkers theory, no clue. Maybe just some random kid who stumbled into Asriel’s dark world. Maybe they were a younger Kris.

PT 5: Potential Implications to Deltarune’s Lore (For Funsies)

Asriel thought Undyne and Alphys were a good match before they even met.

Asriel kept Burgerpants at a shitty retail job in his fantasy world, despite reportedly being his friend.

Asriel might’ve never met Sans and Papyrus. The versions within UT are just stuff he’s heard about them, perhaps from Toriel.

It is implied that in DR Alt Route, lightners that are slain within the dark world also die in real life. This may have connections to the fallen children within UT and/or Dess, a family member of Noelle’s who seems absent from her life.

The Gyftrot, a reindeer monster in UT, is rather memorable for being outright bullied by other monsters. This may have something to do with Dess. It also may have to do with Noelle’s mother, which seems less likely.

Ralsei’s doomsaying and prophesying may be completely untrue. He might be saying shit so the adventure sounds more epic. However, he does seem genuinely distressed when Berdly tries to make his own world.

PT 6: Future Chapters

Ch 2 ends with Kris creating a Fountain. It might be another fake-out, but the next dark world will probably be set within the TV in Toriel’s house. Maybe we’ll get tidbits of Kris lore from that dark world.

The double doors in Asgore’s flower shop, to the hospital rooms, to the church, to the mayor’s office, or to Noelles’s house are potential other entrances to future dark worlds. I imagine that Ch 5 will be when Deltarune finally opens that fucking bunker and disprove every single thing in this theory, if it isn’t done so by noon tomorrow.

Fuck it. Who fucking knows.

Have you ever thought about making some Deltaswap designs? I personally am not a fan of the Kris and Susie swap or the Lancer and Ralsei Swap, but I didn't like Underswap Alphys either, but you managed to get me to like Alphys alot more with your design for her.

I’m so out of touch with Deltarune AUs I didn’t even know that Kris & Susie was the main swap, ahah :’D I know Deltaswap is A Thing That Exists™, but I’ve never once looked up any content of it. to be honest I’m not against Deltarune AUs at all, but personally it feels like if you tried to make Underswap just based entirely on the Undertale demo. like, imagine trying to make Underswap Toriel without knowing she was a queen, or lost over half a dozen children, or even about her friendship with Sans? you probably could make it work, but you’re lacking like 80% of the depth the characters have.

point is, despite how charming all of DR’s characters already are in a single chapter I feel like there’s gonna be so much more we find out about them in the full game, and any AU I tried to make with what we currently know would just feel kinda flat to me. just doing some designs wouldn’t be bad, but I like to make designs feel relevant to characterisation and personality, so uh. same issue

...but despite that this ask did get me thinking so just for fun, here’s a very undeveloped Deltaswap idea I’m not going to do anything with:

(and again, I know absolutely nothing about any versions of Deltaswap, so apologies if any of this has already been done, I genuinely do not know)

swapping Kris & Susie and Ralsei & Lancer does sound like it’d make sense as the two duos of Lightners and Darkners, and it requires way less worldbuilding changes than this idea of mine, but I really can’t imagine Ralsei with Lancer’s personality at all? and I can’t say I have any ideas on how I’d handle Kris and Susie’s personality swap, either.

so if we’re avoiding that swap, the next logical option to me would be Kris & Ralsei and Susie & Lancer, since those are the two main friendships for a chunk of the game. but then that causes the issue of Darkners in the roles of Lightners, and the only way I could make sense of that is to swap the Dark World and Light World entirely. swapping locations usually isn’t my preference, but I could see this being fun!

a Dark World-themed Hometown could have buildings in the style of Card Castle and Ralsei’s Empty Town, and the autumn trees would be replaced by those red square-leafed trees like in the field and forest, and the Darkners who live there are just chill friendly people to talk to.

the Light World would then be the one you fall into, and it’d have the same layout as the original game’s Dark World but with the Light World aesthetic. the field and forest would be all autumnal, and maybe the Empty Town could look like the graveyard area? and I guess you’d have more of UT’s monsters who can show up as repeated enemy encounters, but there’d be the occasional familiar faces to talk to or fight as well.

as for the characters: no clue what to do with Ralsei’s home life or the player possession thing, but I’d see him as the quiet loner type like DR Kris, though still very sweet and friendly, and not as much of a silent protagonist. maybe he’d have his classic hat and black fur appearance in the Dark World and the hatless white-furred look in the Light World.

Lancer would be outright meaner but his insults still tend to be pretty goofy, and both DR Susie and Lancer already have issues with no one actually liking them, so no change there. I don’t know how his appearance would change in the Light World jhgjksdf

Kris is... complicated, but I think their personality would be like a more serious version of DR Ralsei. they’ve been alone for a long time waiting for the Heroes to arrive and act as a responsible guide for Ralsei, and I could see them having a “my choices don’t matter, but maybe yours will” kind of mentality? dunno how much sense that makes but whatever it sounded cool ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Susie wouldn’t be as silly as DR Lancer, but she definitely has more fun being the Mean Girl with her actual motorbike. also not sure what to do with her home life and being related to whatever big bad the Light World has...

Rouxls in Alphys’ role as a Dark World teacher would be hilarious and you can’t convince me otherwise. “thoust worms, bringeth me the chalk This Instante or thou shalt all be placedesteth in the Detention Dungeons”

Alphys on the other hand would be Suffering over puzzles and you’d probably just feel bad for her until she realises how cool the Fun Gang is and roots for them instead.

Jevil swaps with Sans. you know in your heart there’s no one else either would swap with. Jevil would’ve recently moved to the Dark World Hometown to run a shop, but remains a terrible little gremlin man who says weird things at you. still has his CHAOS CHAOS branding, of course.

Sans just gets to be a hellish boss and make dumb jokes again, only he has a jester-themed hoodie or something.

...and uh, I guess since people like shipping Jevil with Seam (don’t really get the ship myself but more power to those who do), it’d only be fair to swap Seam with Toriel. Seam as Ralsei’s parental figure could be pretty adorable, actually? it’s just a shame the price of that fluff is putting up with Jevil talking about befriending your parent last night.

Toriel can be the sweet, tired shopkeeper who kindly tells you about the Light World, offers you some food and armour, and later gives you hints about her long-lost friend who got locked in Clown Jail for causing problems on purpose.

I guess Spade King and Asgore would be an obvious swap, but I can’t see the King being a father figure to Ralsei and there’s no way in hell Asgore would be cruel to Susie, so who knows.

swapping Clover and Undyne could be very cute! DR Undyne being a cop is, uh, controversial to say the least, so instead Clover could be one of those people who holds stop signs to let kids cross the road safely. some of her heads yell at people if they don’t slow down quick enough.

Undyne’s just yelling about puzzles and celebrating her birthday, she’s having a good time

I have nothing more than that and this already got miles long anyway but if there were a Deltaswap like that out there maybe it’d be kinda neat 👍

howdy this was kinda expected since i’ve done undertale characters before but not fully nor online (specifically asgore, and i just might res him again if i had restraints (which im starting to get now lmao)), but i had to take time to play DELTARUNE chapter 2 which I did to take some stress off with what I’ve actually been doing for a few days AND OH GOD IM BACK ON MY UNDERTALE SHIT- I was into UT when it first came out, but it simmered down. DR then came out, and it was somewhat back again until the newest chapter just smack me. You know I’m a sucker for blank-slates, LMAO- My favorite character is Susie so far and I will die for her dlfmlkdgf- She’s like the perfect mean girl with a secretly tender heart!!! Learning friendship!!! Love!!! we love to see it amnlkfgmdl- so much susie development this chapter, we susie fans are so spoiled ANAKLSNFMLF-

Kris may be another blank-slate but I feel like we’ll be able to dive into the whole “being controlled by the player” and how that affects them, since they’re just a prisoner in their own body. It is canonical that Kris can react to whatever the player does, so I’m gonna abuse that, especially with the SnowGrave verse (YES I HAVE THAT VERSE FOR KRIS, YES, IT IS HORRIBLE-) but both players in the Pacifist verse and the SnowGrave one are different. The one in the Pacifist verse is very kind and wants to bond with as many people as they can, while the one in the SnowGrave verse is...very pushy, very inconsiderate, very uncaring - very malicious. Kris is trying to break free but they can’t fully break free...yet. Kris’ actions and dialogue are not their own - neither are most of the faces they make. They’re just a puppet to the player.

Susie is best girl, with some Guzma-like development, she has changed a lot since Chapter 1. She doesn’t know what this friendship thing is, but she’s starting to try her best at it. Though, if anyone talks shit about any of her friends, you bet she’s gonna beat their ass. Reptilian Guzma? Yes. It’s no wonder why I love her so much, lmao- but the interactions she has, especially with Noelle and Kris are SUPER WHOLESOME ACK- She’s so oblivious to anyone giving her love or crushing on her, because she’s never be loved like that before?? Chapter 1 Susie is still mean but getting there, while Chapter 2 Susie is much different and more comfortable around Kris, Ralsei, and other people like Noelle and more comfortable with trying nicer options. Very exciting to start these two!

this isnt quite what you asked but heres what's everyone from chapter 1 has been Up To with a little bit of context (and under a read more bc it got LENGTHY):

kris - professional stay at home teen (they live w/ asgore n help run the flower shop sometimes. this decision was entirely bc i dont like toriel). was wrongly diagnosed w Sudden Soul Rejection when they were incredibly young and given an experimental transplanted soul as a replacement. it works for them fine, give or take having to see gaster once a month for checkups. but sometimes the soul makes them skittish n decides they're going to sit in front of the pc and play 30 consecutive hours of a certain simulation game and not even let them drown people in the pool. if it were entirely up to them, they'd be like. passing out on the sofa to documentaries about bigfoot. or practicing cool knife tricks to impress their friends at their next tabletop meetup

- EDITED IN: the soul is kind of their friend. they are wearing a hypothetical get along shirt. most of the time, they agree on actions and things to do. tends to refer to themself + their soul as we/us which originally was just something they did in their head but they kept slipping in speech/text n just became a Thing of how they talk. switches to 'I/Me' whenever smth is wrong.

asgore - the same. runs a lil flower/gift shop. people come in more to talk with him than to buy flowers most of the time, though

asriel Flowey - he's back in flower form, thanks to the government an accident. causes a lot of technology glitches wherever he goes, and wants revenge. isn't sure how to go about it. asriel "died" around 8 years before the story takes place and kris still misses him and refuses to even THINK about even the IDEA of calling someone their sibling after what happened, just in case it somehow happens a second time

susie - more of the same really. she spends most of her time either at grillby's (she's sort of become his assistant n helps with opening/closing. it just happened) or getting into low-stakes trouble w/ kris

noelle - she's in the city's equivalent of college and shes so tired. shes So Abysmally Tired n got kinda pushed 2 follow in her mom's footsteps. she's rarely around anymore except through text or on monsters & mages (dnd) night. (however.........she will come back w/ a long break n hang out w everyone again)

berdly - tbh i didnt even consider berdly when i made the au initially. idk what he's doing. probably in a similar situation to noelle??? canonically got kicked out of the M&M group due to clashes w/ other players but lurks in their group chat to posts memes sometimes

didnt rly think of any other of kris' classmates (+ their families) after ch1 and probably will continue to not, until chs 3-5 come out and i gotta whip up roles and histories for like. a lotta guys all of a sudden. i also forgot about noelle's parents

sans - runs a convenience store that everyone kind of thinks is a front, but also it has really cheap snacks and the local teens make a point of stopping there after school. so essentially, more of the same papyrus - similar to ut. is a very polite and sweet boy but you'll know when he's coming

grillby - he's back. he runs a bar like back in ut but the cozy vibes and weird-for-a-bar hours keep attracting kids who need parents, so half of his menu is comprised of overly sweet mocktails. usually only frequented by monsters

QC - same as usual. has a "rivalry" with grillbz but, theyre besties and have a book club

mettaton - he's real and he's back. he's similar to how he is back in ut w/ his EX body. likes to hang out at grillby's and talk to unsuspecting fans. has a show for everything

napstablook - similar to how they are in ut. helps mtt with making music sometimes. doesn't leave the house too often, but spends a lot of time posting on undernet

undyne - unfortunately. more of the same. she is a cop in the monster district. i am also upset by this but couldn't think of anything better for her

alphys - a doctor studying under dr. gaster in the hopes she'll one day take over his research. she spends most of her time as a nurse with a bigger title, though, and blocks out the weirdness of her job with anime.

gaster - weird guy. H01's top soul researcher and resident House wannabe. trying to manufacture the ultimate soul that can be controlled with simple internal switches, but so far he's only had 1 (very limited) success with a certain human. monsters just melt, and darkners just sorta......get weird... he's onto Something, though.

ralsei - lonely boy with some very strange hobbies. popular on UnderNet for poetry, baking videos, and general cryptid vibe. is the DM for the monsters & mages group (also seems to think everything is actually very fine in H01 when it is very much not)

lancer - about the same. professional Round Boy. lives w/ rouxls full time. follows susie around like a lost puppy and calls himself her "underling."

rouxls - runs a hotel/casino kind of deal where the objective Bad Guys hang out, and usually ends up doing any of the spade king's paperwork.

spade king - mafia godfather. kind of a dick. don't play cards with him

seam - works with the spade king as his right hand cat more or less because they have for a lot of years and are in that 'sunk cost fallacy' zone. thinks of retiring to a quiet life in the monster section of town like, daily

jevil - used to work with the spade king, but got imprisoned for Crimes. got weird after The Accident (separate from asriel's accident)

temmies (all) - dont really get mentioned except offhandedly but they run the monster space station. so far, are the only monsters who have ever been to space.

as far as chapter 2 goes:

yeah i dont have much so far for characters. in the original version of the au i accidentally made darkners as a whole just kinda..... not great? like all sorts of weird organized crime ties n sort of going out of their way to be A Problem to the city (not even in like. a revolution way. in a working against them but with the same goals kinda way). with the whole context it worked At The Time, bc i just had the spade king to look to as a villain, and also in this au the darkners are just trying to survive a world that ultimately was not built for them (that humans think they own, and monsters sort of... seeing this and wondering what it'll mean for them whichever one wins), but w/ new info abt how the dark world works n more guys to work with i want to kind of. edit the vibe a bit. like yea darkners will ultimately do whatever it takes to take over H01, but maybe in a better way than like. idk. all this. it doesnt have to be peaceful or anything it just has to be more adaptable as we meet more kinds of darkners

however yeah i thought up 'queen as some sort of childless mommy blogger/influencer' and that completely revived all memory i had of this au. she should be on mtt's talkshow. also she sells collectible wine glasses w/ her likeness

spamton is another one of gaster's failed soul experiments, but he hasn't melted yet, and seems............fine? sort of. so he hasn't gotten decommissioned yet. he does want to give you malware tho. hot monster singles in your area n all that

Hey guys, spooks here. I’ve been asked if I’ll continue ZT a couple of times. The answer? tl;dr: Maybe, but please don’t hold your breath?? Long, boring, personal stuff under the cut lol.

As I’m sure you’ve all noticed, I’ve been slowing down a lot over the last year and a half or so. Months without updates have become commonplace, and interest has been waning both from the fandom and from myself. Looking around, I’m surprised this project lasted as long as it has. I’ve said this before, but it started out as a big fat joke. As the UT fandom was really kicking off and endless AUs were being born, I wanted to try and come up with a really stupid idea and try and make it worthwhile. I quick drew out a first page, then decided to draw a couple more, and before I knew it people were actually interested in reading it. I figured I would make it a year long project, something to warm myself up before making an original story. One year turned to two, which turned to three, and here we are now, three and a half years into it, still nowhere near where I thought I would be, or where I wanted to be. Are we even half way done? For a while, it was the thing getting me through the week. Go to work, go home, work on ZT for 4-5 hours, go to sleep. Rinse and repeat, nearly five days a week. But now? I don’t have a job anymore. I moved back to the USA to live with my family (which was what I was doing the last couple of months, by the way), and now I’m not sure what I want. For as much as I would like to finish this story, I would like to move on to something new. For as proud as I am of myself for working this hard and getting this far, I regret not creating anything original and instead using ZT as an excuse not to. I want to get out there and make a name for myself without riding on the coattails of a successful indie darling, but I don’t even know where to start, and I hate myself for that. It probably sounds like a bunch of bullcrap. Despite everything, I still really like UT, and honestly think that ZT is probably in the top maybe 10% of UT fan comics? That isn’t really saying much, is it? I don’t know if I’ll update once a week, or once a month, or never again. I haven’t decided yet. Honestly, it would’ve been easier for me if you all just forgot about this pet project, and then I could just let it quietly fade away. Anyway. I really appreciate all the kind words of encouragement I've received over the last three and a half years. I’ve made a lot of new friends, who I hope will last a lifetime. It was really fun, and thank you all for sticking with me on this ride, even if it’s caught in a weird limbo indefinite hiatus area right now. The True Nature of Deltarune

Deltarune Chapter 1 has been out for over a year now, and being the big UT/DR fan that I am, I’ve been slowly mulling over both games, reading many fan theories and putting together my own interpretation of what I believe the nature and goal of Deltarune will be. This will be a long one so grab some popcorn, put on your matpat hats and click to keep reading!

So what is Deltarune? Is it a sequel to Undertale? Is it a prequel? Is it an alternate universe? Is it the coming of age story of a bunch of teens? Is it a complex meta-narrative on the nature of video games?

The answer is yes to all of the above. And to begin delving into this we must first understand the creator of this game: Toby Fox.

I won’t toot Toby’s Fox’s horn too much, we all know how talented and hardworking he is, but he’s also very emotionally perceptive and empathic. His general disposition is reminiscent of avant-garde artists that push the boundaries of artistic creation in a medium.

Toby loves mysteries, and in the early version of Undertale there was an included file that disparaged hackers and went on to say that it’s difficult to add mysteries in games these days due to data miners and such.

Thankfully, this did not stop Toby from lovingly adding quite a few big mysteries to Undertale that have yet to be resolved. Knowing Toby and his strong desire to share his story, a story that according to him, kept him awake at night:

“For the past 3 years I've been waking up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep because I've been thinking about the scenes that happen in the game. Even though so many details are still hazy, I really want to show you the things I've been thinking about.That's really my only reason for making this game. If I don't show you what I'm thinking, I'll lose my mind.“

I don’t believe Toby will let these mysteries go unanswered, and it is here that we can begin to understand what Deltarune is about.

The Mystery of W.D. Gaster

Truly, the biggest mystery of Undertale is that of W.D. Gaster: former royal scientist, creator of the CORE and the Determination Extraction machine.

A player can go through the entirety of Undertale multiple times and never even hear word of Gaster’s existence. This is because all the events that pertain to him are hidden behind a value in the game’s files known as the “FUN value”. Outside of actually manipulating this file manually yourself, it is, to the average player, random. The FUN value can trigger multiple different events throughout the game, some of which include running into “Followers of Gaster” or even Gaster himself.

While the latter has nothing to say before he “boings” out of existence, the former Followers all tell an eerie tale of a scientist who fell into his own creation and was scattered across time and space.

But hold on. Time and space? Why does that sound familiar?

Ah yes, during the Sans battle he speaks about an “massive anomaly in the timespace continuum”.

And during this battle Sans says a lot of other cryptic things without context, for example, he laments not being able to “go back” somewhere. But where or when is he referring to?

He mentions how he and others were monitoring time-lines and their readings showed them stopping and starting, jumping left and right, and eventually ending. Who was he monitoring these readings with? This all seems incredibly scientific and sci-fi, I thought Sans was just a silly skeleton, is he some kind of time cop? (he does have a “badge” in his workshop) He also uses skeletal weapons known as “Gaster Blasters”.

What…? Gaster Blaster?

Okay, now we KNOW Sans DEFINITELY has some connection to this mysterious scientist W.D. Gaster, but what? Well, for starters W.D. Gaster is short for Wing Dings Gaster, a type of font that he also speaks in.

Who else is named after and speaks in specific font types? Sans and Papyrus of course!

Furthermore, in the concept sketches for Papyrus, Toby wrote and redacted parts of a message that says: “has a brother named comic sans and a [BLANK] named [BLANK]”.

Who is this mysterious redacted person and what is their relationship to Sans and Papyrus? The easy money is on a family member, and for sake of argument lets use the prediction most of the fandom has already concluded and accepted: that Sans and Papyrus have a father named Gaster.

So Sans and Papyrus have a long lost father that was a scientist. This explanation would begin to explain why Sans has a weapon named after him, and why he wanted to “go back” to some place or time, perhaps in an effort to save him from his fate.

There’s a hidden event in Undertale where if you reset after listening to Sans speak about LOVE and EXP in a pacifist route, and initiate the conversion a couple of times in a row, he’ll catch on by the expression your face that you’ve heard it before and will surmise that you’re a time traveller and give you secret code words to tell his past self.

This will lead to him giving you the key to his room which ends up just being a prank at first.

But then you find a key to the secret workshop/basement hidden behind his house.

Once you enter the workshop, you’ll find some blueprints written in symbols you can’t read (wing dings?) and a curtain covering a machine that doesn’t seem to be working, among other things.

Toby Fox tweeted a message regarding this machine a few days after Undertale’s release around the time people were figuring out FUN values and the secrets surrounding Sans and Gaster.

“You’ve all seen the happiest outcome. Neither of them could fix the machine, no matter how hard they tried. No one can.”

This tweet seems to imply that if the machine could be fixed that Undertale could have a happier outcome.

And this my friends, is the gateway to the nature of Deltarune.

Deltarune, according to Toby Fox, is a game for players that have completed Undertale. But what does it mean to complete Undertale, and I mean, TRULY complete it? Toby often expressed that he wasn’t happy with how people told others how to play the game, that it is best played completely blind. Having played Undertale blind myself, and having watched others do the same, the natural way the game is meant to progress is that first players will experience the Neutral Ending, followed by the Pacifist Ending, and Finally the Genocide ending. This is because the game cruelly plays against your expectations of how an RPG should work and this almost guarantees that you will kill at least one monster your first play through. As if the fact that the fight button is always the default position in battle isn’t enough, in the early parts of the game you are told that you may need to weaken a monster before you can spare them. This naturally brings to mind the systems of Pokémon, where you have the best chance to catch a Pokémon if it’s at low health. Well, if you try this during the Toriel fight, as most do, you’ll find that as soon as you get close to critical health, you’ll instantly kill her.

Difficulty-wise, the neutral route is the most easy, because you can level up a little and gain more HP. The Pacifist route is a bit harder because your HP is lower, but with the experience you gain from the previous route, it should prove no problem. Finally the Genocide route is the most difficult because it takes a concerted effort that implies knowledge of the previous routes to kill every single monster.

So an ideal Deltarune player has knowledge of all three main routes of Undertale, and may have experienced or heard of Gaster.

Is this player you? If so, ask yourself, what would a “happier outcome” look like to you? And be honest. Many fans in the Undertale community have already answered this question in the form of fanworks. Some of the most common elements among them are as follows:



1) Frisk and all the monsters are free from the Underground and living on the surface with humans.

2) Asriel is revived.

3) Gaster is revived.

4 )Chara is revived.

The revival of Asriel, Chara, and Gaster are the undisputed holy grails in terms of happiest endings that the UT community dreams of and creates endless fan works to explore the possibilities. Toby knows this well.

Using a speech pattern attributed to Gaster, Toby teased the release of Deltarune Chapter 1

“I LOOK FORWARD TO CREATING A NEW FUTURE WITH YOU.” stands out quite a bit to me as the prospect of a “happier outcome” is already tied to Gaster and Sans, now a “new future” is connected.

And when Deltarune released, and fans had a chance to play it, they found:

1) All the monsters are free and living on the surface.

2) Asriel is alive and well and living his best life.

3) A voice with the same speech pattern as Gaster (based on Japanese text) brought you to this world and attempted to give your own vessel before…

4)…a voice with the same speech pattern as Chara (also based on Japanese text) discarded it.

Right off the bat Toby seems to have given fans what they wanted, a perfect future ending. But as you continue to play, you begin to realize that this may not be the world you dreamed of.

First, while all the monsters are living on the surface, they aren’t the same people from Undertale, for example: Undyne has never met Alphys, and the amalgamates that went to live with their families at the end of Undertale are deceased in this world. And while Asriel is alive, it’s not THE Asriel we were so determined to save in Undertale.

Gaster’s presence permeates Deltarune so thoroughly it would take awhile to point out every example, but it seems clear that he’s present in some form.

And Chara? You only need to see the ending cutscene of chapter 1 to know that they are around in a similar fashion as when they possess Frisk in the True Pacifist after a Genocide ending.

But their presence is also present in subtle ways. For example, if you attempt to play the piano in the hospital in Hometown and then speak to the receptionist, she comments that Kris’ playing isn’t the same as usual (Likely due to our control), but it seems that Chara may be good at piano. Interestingly, on the cover artwork for the official Undertale Piano Collection 2 book, Frisk can be seen holding a knife playing a key on a piano in the judgement hall filled with bones.

So for better or worse, what appears to be the original Chara and Gaster from Undertale are present in Deltarune, in some meta form or another. And maybe that’s the key: “Meta-characters”. After all, you yourself as a player are a “Meta-character”. You can ask the inhabitants of this new world questions that only someone with knowledge of a True Pacifist route would have, such as being able to ask Undyne about Alphys. Asking her this only makes sense if you yourself completed a True Pacifist route before playing Deltarune.

Ralsei, the lonely prince.

Toby being the trickster dog he is, he didn’t just give us 1 Asriel and call it a day, no he gave us 2.

Ralsei is quite clearly meant to be a version of Asriel because not only do they have similar or identical dialogues, but he was also was meant to look more like him before Toby decided to give him his Black Mage look.

There are even strong parallels obviously meant to create an emotional response and connect Ralsei to the feelings people had for Asriel in Undertale by giving the players the option to hug him.

Ralsei is quite the mystery on his own. And while he’s most certainly sweet and lovable, there’s undeniably some disconcerting things about him such as:

-Why does he know Kris and Susie’s names?

-Who did he learn the prophecy from? “Foretold by time and space” isn’t a good answer (or is it?).

-What did he say to Kris when the player SOUL wasn’t present in the prison?

-When he’s KO’d in battle, what does he become? Apparently he can still eat to regain HP when in this shrunken form.

Ralsei seemed to be under the impression that violence wasn’t needed in this world, but upon nearly being defeated by the King after mistakenly healing him, Ralsei says “This isn’t a world where kindness always wins, is it?”

The way he says this seems to imply he knows of other worlds and that they have different rules. Perhaps he comes from a world where someone being kind to everyone they met had great results?

There are definitely things that Ralsei is not telling us, whether this means he’s up to no good will remain to be seen, however, I would like to take this opportunity to make a prediction based on the previous understanding that the original Chara and Gaster are present in this new world in meta forms, and assert that Undertale Asriel, the final piece of the perfect ending puzzle is present in Deltarune in his own meta-character form of Ralsei. Perhaps the form he shrinks into when KO’d is one we know well...

There is that unused Flowey face...

Add glasses and a hat and...

but that’s just a game theory!

And I can't help but wonder about the dark heart on Ralsei's chest and this merchandise in the Deltarune section of fangamer that specifically features a quote from Undertale about the prophecy of Delta Rune (that turns out to be about Asriel in the TP ending, and Chara in the Genocide ending) "There is a prophecy. The Angel... The One Who Has Seen The Surface... They will return. And the underground will go empty."

It's also the Deltarune game logo

Because the merchandise is called Darkheart, it made me immediately think of the dark heart on Ralsei's chest, and having an Undertale quote about Asriel/Chara makes it all the more mysterious...

Regardless, in just the first chapter of Deltarune, the elements of the “happier outcome” connected to Sans’ machine are present. But how do they all connect? Well, let’s look at the other characters in Deltarune, starting with:

Lancer

Oh Baby Santa Claus, how we love you so. It’s hard to overlook how similar Lancer is to Sans. They’re both hilarious in their own way, both ride bikes, have similar color-schemes, both have a love for tomato-based products, and both have some scientific/engineering affinity (Sans and his workshop, Lancer and his “Lancer Industries”).

But that’s not all, the door to Sans’ room is identical to the warp doors found in the Dark World that Lancer hails from, and Sans’ warp ability also makes the same sound effect as these doors as well.

Lancer is a member of the FUN gang (remember the FUN value?), that, as far as we know currently, has 3 other members besides himself: Kris, Ralsei, and Susie (with the possibility of Noelle and others in the future).

Speaking of Susie, her name (or a version of it) popped up in Undertale prior to Deltarune’s release when the game was released on the Switch. By speaking to the Gaster Follower “Clamgirl”, you can learn of a girl named “Suzy”, that you will meet her soon, and that “in life’s grand scheme, she might be why you came here in the first place...”

Upon receiving this dialogue, checking the drawers in Sans workshop will reveal a card with a drawing of 3 people smiling and the words “don’t forget”.

“Don’t Forget” is the vocal theme of Deltarune sung by Laura Shigihara, and the melody from the ending verse,“Don’t forget, I’m with you in the dark.”, is leitmotifed throughout the entire Deltarune chapter 1 OST. The connections between Sans, the FUN gang, Gaster, and by extension Undertale and Deltarune are quite apparent. Perhaps the actions of the FUN gang in the Deltarune world will have an affect on the FUN value in Undertale.

Based on all the evidence we have now, I am going to make a bold prediction:

Lancer is literally a younger Sans.

That’s right, Toby Fox made Baby Sans before Disney and Sega made Baby Yoda and Baby Sonic.

Deltarune’s Dark World is the past from the perspective of Sans and Gaster (or a recreation of it). How Lancer becomes Sans will likely be a very large part of Deltarune’s narrative, and once he becomes Sans, he will exist as a separate meta entity that can traverse different worlds, even if versions of himself already exist in some form there (similar to Ralsei and Asriel).

We’ve seen that if characters are exposed to elements that make it clear they live in a video game world, whether this be Determination for humans and Flowey, a time-space accident for Gaster, or a strange man whispering to Jevil, these characters become something wholly different, more powerful, and begin to become more similar to players with the ability to SAVE, RESET, or use abilities that seem beyond the scope of the game (e.g. Photoshop Flowey, Jevil’s ability to speak, etc). Undertale and Deltarune are video games about video games.

So if it is to be believed that Gaster is Sans’ father, and that Lancer is a younger Sans, then it stands to logical reason that whoever Lancer’s father is, that they must be Gaster.

No, not the King, there is another. A “Lesser-dad”.

Yes, Rouxls Kaard.

“GOD DAMNIT”

Rouxls Kaard, or “Rules Card”, or if you rearrange his name “A Dark Soul Rx”, wait, Rx as in prescription? As in a doctor? Dark Soul as in Mr. Darkness Gaster himself? Too much of a stretch? Maybe. Although you can’t deny they have similar appearances.

If Rouxls Kaard is Gaster, and therefore the father of Sans and Papyrus, then he’s undeniably similar to one of his sons. Rouxls Kaard seems to be quite passionate about puzzles, (despite not having a natural predilection to them). I could see Papyrus gaining an affinity for puzzles by being raised by such an individual, they both have quite flamboyant personalities. And let’s not forget that there are also hints that Rouxls Kaard may be inclined to creating scientific devices such as the “Control Crowne” he uses to control K.Round.

Hmm, controlling other people… sounds familiar to what we the player are doing to Kris… and who was it that was initially going to give us control of a vessel before we lost said control to Chara’s intervention? Control seems to play a big part in Deltarune doesn’t it?

Also, isn’t his manner of speech is reminiscent of a silly ye olde knight. Wait, wasn’t there a Knight causing trouble in the Dark World? Hm.

So something is going to turn Lancer and Rouxls Kaard into Sans and Gaster, respectively.

Now remember the CORE that Gaster built? This one?

It turns geothermal energy into magical electricity via an unknown means with one of the byproducts being ozone, which is corrosive and could potentially make someone very melty. This is what it looks like on the inside.

Lots of blues of varying hues with white accents. Kinda reminds me of Rouxls Kaard and the other “card” people’s color schemes.

What a coincidence! Oh and apparently the layout of the CORE can be re-arranged or something:

"I work at the CORE. The inside is a maze made of swappable parts... That means we can shuffle the layout at will." - Hotland NPC

Almost sounds like a sliding puzzle…

Finally, Gaster is referred to as “The man who speaks in hands”, likely due to his Wing Dings font that contains a lot of hand symbols, however, it isn’t a stretch to also apply that epithet to Rouxls Kaard, after all, the Rules Card speaks in hands as well. Hands of cards.

Susie

Can’t forget Susie. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can say about how her role in all this will play yet. If we are to believe that the “Suzy” that Clamgirl references is Susie, then it’s clear that she’ll be key, perhaps as a catalyst for all the big changes some characters will need to undergo...

I will say that I think it’s interesting that toby specifically has a character in Hometown comment that humans are made of blood (and implying the monsters are not),

and Susie says:

“Everybody bleeds, right?”

From our understanding of monsters in Undertale, monsters don’t bleed, they turn to dust. But, maybe Darkners can bleed. If we believe Sans is a Darkner, it may explain this:

It could be ketchup. It could be a Darkner thing. Lancer does mention blood casually. But if only humans and Darkners bleed, then why would a monster like Susie say “everybody bleeds”?

So what is Deltarune you ask? I think it’s:

1) A story about Sans, Papyrus, and Gaster’s past and future. We get to experience their past in the Dark World, and speak with their future selves in the Light World. But these future versions of Sans and Papyrus may not be as far into the future as the Sans and Papyrus we meet in Undertale. Remember, Sans had an Ice-E’s crossword in Undertale? Ice-E’s-P’E’zza is a restaurant in Hometown. Papyrus may also be younger than he was in Undertale because Sans, an adult who runs a grocery store, thinks a teen like Kris should hang with his little brother, and it would be “weird” if he were there with them.

2) A story about post-Undertale Asriel, Chara, and Gaster. Asriel/Flowey maintains his new form as Ralsei thanks to the power of the Dark Fountain. He now lives in what is/was Sans’ childhood home. Whether he knows this or remembers the events of Undertale is unknown, but it is my belief that he holds a deep connection to the Asriel we all wished to save. Chara resides within Kris in a similar manner as they did at the ending of a UT True Pacifist Ending after surrendering the red SOUL to them in a Genocide ending. Does this mean that Kris’s body or “vessel” is Frisk? This seems to be heavily implied by Kris’ outfit taking on the same color scheme as Frisk’s UT shirt while in the Dark World.

3) A coming of age story for a bunch of teens. Kris, Susie, Ralsei, Noelle, Lancer, and all the friends that may join on their adventures are still people regardless of what grand meta narrative is at play involving the nature of their reality. They still need to go to school, fall in love, and worry about growing up and going to university. Noelle will undoubtedly play a large role with Toby’s tease of her as “Lost Girl”, and considering how attached most of the community has already gotten to these characters, it hurts my heart to think about what may befall them as they try their best to live their lives. Does this mean Deltarune’s world is doomed? I hope not... but those save file screens sure are creepypasta...

4) A story about video games and the control (or lack thereof) we have over them. It’s quite clear that we, the player controlling the red soul, is able to influence this new world based on knowledge from Undertale that should have no barring. For example, we can name “Onionsan” who has forgot their own name. One of the options is “Onion”, but why? Is it because we know their name is Onionsan in Undertale? How do we even know if that is actually what this version of them is really named?

Deltarune is so close to the perfect Undertale ending we wanted, but it’s just a little bit wrong. Would it hurt to force Undyne and Alphys to meet and fall in love? To get Toriel and Asgore back together? To make Bratty and Catty friends? If you were given the option in game to do it, would you do it? What if it made their lives worse…? I believe that the fact we are able to influence inhabitants of Deltarune with our Undertale knowledge may have some unforeseen consequences, and perhaps, be what begins this whole situation in the first place. (Paradoxes are the best time travel stories!)

Toby Fox said that Deltarune was the game he originally wanted to make, but whether it was too ambitious or time consuming, his idea evolved into Undertale. Now that he’s creating the game he always wanted to, I believe that he will connect everything we know about them together and resolve the mysteries, after all, Gaster has been waiting for this chance.

And maybe, with a little luck and determination, we can create a new future with a happier outcome. If I’ve learned anything from Undertale, it’s that you must hold on to your hopes and dreams, because dreams are the goal of “Determination.”

Friday... It was like 7:30 PM and thought I could take a quick 10 minute nap but was so exhausted from work that next thing I knew was waking up at 3:00 AM. And since there is not much to do to pass time, I decided to do something about it: write.

One of the things I always liked about the Sonic franchise is it's characters. It's not only that they have very appealing designs that combine cute traits with a touch of coolness, but also their well defined personalities. Saddly, I often see people get the wrong idea about them... and it's not just the fans (particularly the fandumb who misinterpretate them into something they are not out of spite) but even the people who are supposed to be professionals who for some reason struggle to get the hang of characters that at first glance seem to have simple personalities.

Today I'm just going to focus on the main cast besides Sonic: Eggman, Tails, Amy and Knuckles.

Dr. Eggman IMO is a character that was always meant to be a cartoony villain who is as goody as he is dangerous. While in Japanese manuals he calls himself a scientific genious of evil, the truth is that Eggman is for the most part, just a very selfish and immature fellow who happens to also be the most brilliant mind in the entire world.

The reason why Eggman is so dangerous is that he pursues his selfish desires such as building an entire amusement park just for himself (and to absolutely share it with no one else) without ever thinking of how he puts everyone, himself included, in great danger by handling forces that he can't expect to control. He is like a very spoiled manchild who is playing with fire in a tinderbox.

While he considers evil, it's also important to note that Eggman is not exactly what I would call sadistic (except in the Archie/IDW comic) since he never is shown to enjoy the suffering of innocents that are caught on his schemes... Eggman simply just doesn't care, but I believe that if he were to be conscious of how his actions affect others, he might at the very least hesitate on going further with his plans because despite being a trouble maker, Eggman is not a monster and in some occassions has shown to still have redeeming aspects that do surface from time to time.

Another interesting aspect about Eggman is that despite him boasting about how great it is to be him and acting all smug, he might actually be a character that feels lonely. In Sonic Unleashed, this point was brought by Chip and think there is validity to it because in the next game, we're introduced to his two assistants Orbot and Cubot, who ever since have kept company to the doc, though as expected, he treats them awfully (but never in a cruel way) just like a bully would to their henchmen. Perhaps Eggman does want to have friends, but because of his selfish and self-centered personality, he drives away anyone who might want to try to come close to him. Heck, the only reason he and Amy remained Fuzzy Puppy buddies in Sonic Boom was that for once, Eggman stopped acting like a spoiled brat and returned the stolen figure after Amy threatened to stop being his friend.

Tails (aka Miles Prower). Tails is a character that has suffered a lot in recent games because of what I mentioned at the start of this wall of text: simple characters who are misunderstood.

This is a character that is meant to be the kid of the group, and as such, he would be the one who experiences doubts and self-confidence issues because while you have strong and experienced characters like Sonic and Knuckles, or the self-made heroine that Amy Rose eventually grew to become, Tails is just the youngest member of the group who for the longest time relied on being by Sonic's side to have the confidence to do things.

Tails has a talent when it comes to tinkering with machines which seems to bring him great joy (I imagine it's the kind like when I build sci-fi model kits), and is always seeking to gain the acknowledgement from his friends by showing to them his latest inventions. At heart, Tails is a gentle child who is the exact opposite of Dr. Eggman because while the doc uses all his talents and resources for self-serving purposes, Tails wants for his inventions to help make life easier for others. However, often his inventions have flaws/bugs that the boy oversees because of his child-like enthusiasm, and this can sometimes cause troubles (like in Sonic Boom's "UT" episode) that causes for Tails to sink into his own doubts.

One thing that I feel is very important to take into consideration is that Tails should never be the kind of character that guilt-trips the audience into feeling sorry for him. When one feels empathy for a character, it's often because they struggle and show very humane and relatable emotions. Tails being confused about what went wrong is IMO a very sincere form of showing his doubts and him trying to correct them is his form of struggle. A trap writers could fall for is to make the other characters act mean to him which is something I feel should be avoided because it cheapens the whole thing.

Amy Rose. With Amy, the thing I liked and always believed is that out of all the characters, she is the one with the most potential... And what annoys me is the way Sonic Team fails to deliver on it by all of the wrong reasons.

I always loved Amy because she is one of the characters that to mee feels the most "real". Amy is a very energetic and bubbly girl with an endless supply of optimism that always makes her see the best out of any situation. She also has quite some flaws too, like being impulsive, quick to jump into conclussions, can be a bit feisty, etc... IMO, this makes Amy feel closer to the normal people and believe that in the Sonic franchise, she serves as a bridge between Sonic's bigger than life adventures and the normal, everyday life. But if there is one thing that this character has that won me over, is her compassion and empathy for others. Sure, every character can show that too because it's a basic humane quality. However, none of them takes it to the length that Amy does because what makes Amy unique is that her compassion and empathy also extends towards the bad guys. You see, Amy is the kind of character that believes that everyone deserves to be happy in life, and because her insight makes her realize the sadness experienced by those who lost their way and deviated into a dark path, she will try to make them realize the inner good that they forgot existed or did not know was there. Where Sonic saves the world, Amy saves bad guys from themselves.

Funny enough, Amy herself is a character that I am very sympathetic for because unlike Tails and Knuckles, who from the very start of their careers had the full support of Sonic Team and always received a preferential treatment, Amy is a character that had to start literally from zero to get where she is now... and even then, sometimes it feels like she is often left behind by the developers who overlook the many things that she as a character can contribute to the main cast, what she herself can accomplish as a hero, what she can add as a playable character... And it's this one-sided form of exclussion that feels so unfair, based on dumbass ideas like "she wasn't part of the Genesis trilogy" that has resulted in so many missed opportunities... From SA2 not continuing her character development by giving the spotlight instead to Knuckles (who didn't even contributed to the plot in any meaningful way and was just there for the sake of pandering to his popularity), to being robbed in Forces from being the leader the IDW comic showed (and which previous games hinted she would one day become) to Mania not having her in the game despite already haven proved to be a great addition in Sonic Advence, giving her spot instead to a couple of literal nobodies. Even the animated mini-series would had also forgotten all about her had it not been for Tyson Hesse, who likes the character and always wanted to feature her and insisted until he got the green light to go ahead with what I feel is the most special episode of the Mania Adventures mini series (and the oerfect Christmas gift for me).If only Christian Whitehead and Takashi Iizuka had been more like Hesse... Cowards. No, I'm not even fucking sorry for calling them that.

Sometimes, as an Amy fan, it's so very hard to have any love for things like the immensely popular "classic trio" (the concept, not the characters involved) because how this has resulted in Amy always getting the short end of the stick. This is a character that IMO should had been right up there along Tails in terms of importance, not being sidelined or excluded over crap "reasons".

And finally, Knuckles.

Oh Knuckles, where do I begin. Despite how sometimes I may sound harsh towards the character, I have to say that I do like Knuckles because as a character, I believe he can be one of the most entertaining and relatable of the franchise, but because Sonic Team are a mixed bag themselves (they create wonderful character designs and give them unique personalities for the most part, but God if they can be clumsy when it comes to handling them) I feel that Knuckles is the opposite of Amy in that he is a character that fell victim of his popularity, where Amy on the other hand is a victim just because she wasn't introduced in a certain trilogy of games.

As a character, Knuckles feels like a mix between Donald Ducks short-tempered personality, and Daffy Duck's jealousy towards the main character. Indeed, Knux can be quite explosive with his temper, especially if it involves unwanted visitors laying their filthy casual paws all over the master emerald, or when facing unexpected obstacles (I know how this feels... I too hate when my work is affected by factors outside my own power. XD) which in animation, were hilariously captured by Tyson.

Knuckles relationship with Sonic on paper is that of a friendly rivalry... Not because Knuckles is this supposedly good, close friend of Sonic, which I still believe he is not (Tails has a reason to be a close friend, Amy has a reason AND had to struggle and insist until she finally got there... Knuckles though, he was never given one, although it's never too late to start working on it), but rather, because Knuckles was never a bad guy... He simply was some echidna with a very honest and naive sense of what is right which Dr. Eggman took advantage of to pit him against Sonic and Tails. Even if Knuckles was thankful to Sonic for helping clear the mess and recover the master emerald, I believe that deep down, Knuckles still resents having not only been tricked by Eggman, but also being beaten by Sonic... and not just in the literal sense of having been KO'd in Kombat, but also in the sense that Sonic did what he was supposed to do: retrieve the master emerald. This IMO is a wound in Knuckles' pride that never truly healed.

And this brings me to what makes Knuckles so sympathetic. Knuckles is the least brilliant mind of the group. He us also stubborn... A literal knucklehead. And yet, Knuckles is aware of this and in more than one occassion has expressed his frustration and regret for how easy he can be taken advantage of... How could someone not love Knuckles and just want to give him a good hug? This is why I was so very moved when the Archie comic had a heartwarming moment where he and Amy have a talk during a journey to retrieve the shards of the master emerald. Ian Flynn did a great job IMO at humanizing Knux by having him open up to Amy and talk about the things that trouble him, from Sonic being a teased, to his doubt to whether he is worthy of being the master emerald's guardian... And how Amy not only reminded how despite his mistakes, he never ever gave up. And when their adventure was over and succeded in their mission, Amy gave Knuckles that hug he deserved and needed so badly to make him feel appreciated.

They are all wonderful characters when they are done right, and why it so frustrates me so very much when they mess up with them because people, like the unintelligent mass of meat that they are, will always jump to the laziest and easiest conclussion, which is why they all have been given negative stigmas that have been so hard to shake off.

I really wish that these characters were made not only justice, but also to be handled by competent people that can understand what makes them themselves, who understand how they are suppose to act like and provide something that actually rewards their fans instead of punishing them (I'm looking at you Sonic Forces!). Funny how it's cartoons like Sonic Boom, the very last Archie comics and the IDW comic that has been delivering the things I always wanted while the games struggle and fail to deliver. This is why the idea of the next game worries me because I really don't have much faith in Sonic Team doing anything that has not been done in the last games: Sonic only, Tails's character being further butchered while Amy and Knuckles are glorified extras. How can I even have the least faith in them when their track record speaks so loud and clear? Only way the next game will give this characters the care they deserve is if the story is writen by either Ian Flynn or Tyson Hesse. They're the only ones that deliver what Pontac, that other guy and Sonic Team themselves failed to do.

THAT made me want to tap into fandom a little bit more and I went on Twitter and Pixiv and got to see some weird fantasies of being a really controlling Leon but on the other hand saw amazing depictions of Claire being in a loving relationship with a Leon whose kindness lined up with my first exposure of him. (The other day I had a similar experience looking up lesbian/bi claire redfield on this hellsite and someone wrote that Claire is a lesbian -- big big yes -- but added in the tags that “Leon is a trans bi guy!”)

Why not get into it a bit while I’m overcaffeinated?

👉 Leon and Ada is ... weird and people can read weird, bad things into it especialllllllllly if you consider “yellow fever” but it can also be smth super cute where a bi guy and a really cool girl he meets allows him to survive the events of RE 2 (1998) because she is literally mourning the death of her boyfriend in Umbrella. I think that Capcom unbeknownst to their demonic loudmouth staff have created some really thoughtful chances for representation and that helped them get so big--so Ada and Leon are good

But like...

Claire is right there! Leon and Claire become friends like that and tbh they make my bisexual heart melt as individuals. As a couple I feel hope imagining the ways they’d buck the trend of alienation and the threat of abuse...I feel like I care nothing for the fandoms, the creators, and even a majority of the games’ plot points, but here Leon and Claire are, making me feel so much pride because they show that there’s a way for men and women to be ... healthy while in love. They’re the couple that’d be great peer parents (Shirley is a big part of their game they’re protagonists of, and I love how she is written both in 1998 and 2019 which parallels how Moira Burton is written--and completely diverges from the tragedy of the pigeonholey writing of Ashley Graham) and then while they’re wonderful supports to Shirley and are intimately “””together””” in many aspects of life I believe that they’re the type to not even date because the intimate devotion and protection or sticktoitiveness of a friendship ends up building first, because it matters more. Which is not to say that when they do get into a relationship it’s anything but one that is rare.

👉 In regards to this rare kind of love, the key isn’t sympathy or understanding and cooperation even through struggles ranging from PTSD to personality clashes through the years, nor is it chemistry and attractiveness (yeah I will go on record that they’re for better or worse based off of Caucasian models who are paid to be taken pictures of in real life and it fucking shows like I’d be a dishonest bisexual if not just a bad bisexual if I said I didn’t wanna ram both of them into a mattress shut up).To me it’s how Claire is as much of a hero as a typical Die Hard movie hero and YET no more of a hero compared to Leon who is, very clearly, atypical. That’s the biggest part. I love the atypicality. Leon’s seen as hot but approachable and even “a little baby who’s an incompetent rookie cop” but he isn’t... the usual cop, a.k.a. a batt*rer and a **pist and a vio*ent threat and a pig... He’s known to be a soft kind person in the remake.... so to me... 

I love him for Claire but I love the possibility that Leon Scott Kennedy’s bi and gender-nonconforming, and asexual (being demisexual) and not-cisgender and completely proud. I love that he could be this and he IS as good as this ...and he supports lesbians and bi women and alll trans and gnc and nb people unequivocally, maybe,,? Yes? Sbshshdjdjd

Let me defend myself and say that perhaps this is a hyperfixation for me but I’m the type that likes to mix into some of the emotions a tiny nugget of logic so let me make the disclaimer that, ya boi isn't an easy 'n convenient character that's hot into which I as a reader can insert myself... For me I’ve pieced something together that brings comfort and makes some sense. I like to think that he is a survivor of gay-bashing, ostracization, financial abuse, emotional abuse, ****, humiliation, public threats, familial bullshit such as custody battles and gaslighting and is transgender but he’s proud... he’s proudly trans and perhaps he is touchaverse and in terms of sexuality is bi/pansexual while in terms of who he has dated before it’s very messy as he is very aggressively misandrist and hates men and perhaps he’s very stone when he is in a mewd -- and perhaps transphobia makes him go into a rage and he has actually gotten in lots of trouble before as a kid which came back to bite him and he’s lost family and found family and best friends and the loss really hurt and made his choice to go to police academy ring hollow by the end of his training and made him a big believe in social justice and in defending people who society left behind and in therapy and self-change and in accountability (he ISN’T a selfinsert prOMISE!!) but he’s been through a lot aaaaaaaa lotttttt like idk hes just a dude sure

👉 to sum up: i support the remake fans not being uncritical and loving on the cast of characters and leon specifically! there’s a reason he recently bucked the trend of masculinity and (21 years of fandom and 21 years of problematic annoying fans, perhaps also writers, aside) has always been objectifiable, that is, seen as hot/a sidepiece/specifically desirable for women--but just /: not /: women /: as in /: Women slash str8s /: . . . .RETCH lmao he’s a gun toting hero that is very atypical but not in a disempowering manner -- rather, in an empathetic and emotional one and I want to see the RE2 protagonists heal through a life changing care and tender friendship rather than bonding through liferuining catastrophes 💓💓💓but what I am trying to say in the end is that they are so inspiring both together and as individual protegonists due to their abiliy to weather thru struggles that I as a qtwoc immigrant in America can identify with🤧

Infinity War Epilogue, or Three Superheros Walk Into a Bar

This is my first and probably last foray into fan fiction. It was prompted by my wife and teen complaining that two of our favorite characters from the Marvel universe were finally together in a film but didn't have the opportunity to get snarky with one another, which we all felt was a missed opportunity. I decided to do something about it. They enjoyed the results and I hope you do too.

PS: In case you couldn't tell by the title, huge spoiler alert, duh. Do not read if somehow you haven't watched Avengers: Infinity War yet but want to.

“To Olaf, who did slay two dozen Saxons before taking a spear straight through the heart. He died with a song praising the All-Father on his lips!” the large Viking called out, raising his drinking horn. Up and down the great feasting hall, hundreds of others raised their drinking horns to Olaf’s glory. Olaf jumped to his feet. “Yes! And I would’ve slain three dozen, had an arrow not hit my leg! Damn distracting, that.” He sat back down as hundreds of Vikings drank to his glory.

“Thass true,” a Viking slurred into Dr. Strange’s face. Ah used tu be ‘n adventurrur lak him, ‘til ah tik a arrow to the knee. Didn’t heal right, ended my warrior days.”

Dr. Strange looked at the doubled vision of the old man talking to him. “Huh?? I thirt, thought I mean, that only warr’rs ut died fighting got ti Valla, Val, Valhalla,” he said, feeling inordinately proud of having finally gotten the word out right.

“True! Lucky fer me, mah village got ranshacked ‘n uh died fightin’.”

Dr. Strange nodded slowly, which he hoped looked wise and sagely. The truth was that the world was spinning, and he didn’t think he could move his head very quickly without falling out of his chair. A Valkyrie smiled and refilled his drinking horn, then moved on. Dr. Strange slurred his way through a few mystic syllables and gestured absently, and the mead briefly glowed a golden hue. The mead was vile stuff, Dr. Strange thought to himself. But being a master of the mystic arts has its advantages, he thought as he raised horn now filled with 1954 Dom Perignon Rose’ to his lips.

His drinking buddy looked at him with the intensity that only the truly drunk can muster. “Say, my fiend, I mean friend. We don’t get mannnny of yerkind around here. Whadaya doin’ here? Yelost?”

“I, sir, am a mister of the mastical arts.” He sniffed. “It doesn’t get more mastic-mystic than death. Ah c’n go wher’n ah want.” Dr. Strange matched the intense stare with a glassy-eyed intensity of his own. “I’ve bin strait-lassed all m’life. Aftern’ savin’ the cosmos, figgered ah deserved a drink or two.” He paused to consider. “Or three hunrd ‘n ninety-too. Whin yer alreadeee ded, guess you can just keep on drinkin!” He started cackling, then paused, suspecting it didn’t look very dignified. But his friend was laughing too, so he just let himself go.

“Saved the cosmos, did you?” asked a smooth, sardonic and entirely too sober-sounding voice behind him. “Some of us don’t think letting 50% of everyone die qualifies as saving the cosmos. You must be a glass half-full kind of guy.”

“Thasss right,” Dr. Strange said, without bothering to turn around. “Ah saw the one in seven million and whatever-ty whatever ways to lose, and ah made sure we’s on the one, um, the one, what wash I saying?” He started to raise his drinking horn to his lips.

“I think you’ve already had more than enough mead already,” Loki said, putting his hand over the drinking horn. “The 50% you think you saved? They weren’t on the slate to die. You saved nobody, Dr. Strange. Nobody!”

Dr. Strange jerked his drinking horn away, spilling some of it on his cape. The cape snatched a napkin from the table and started wiping itself clean, while the collar managed to convey a withering look at Dr. Strange despite not having a face to express with. Dr. Strange turned to regard Loki with supreme condescension. “Ah did safe ‘em. Yer just too stupid to unnner stand it. And also, sisn’t mead.” His sweaty face smiled beatifically at Loki and tossed back a deep drink—and immediately spat it out all over the half-eaten steak in front of him.

“Told you it was mead,” the God of Mischief said, cocking an eyebrow. “I was right about that and I’m right about this. You may be too drunk to realize it, but you saved no one. Look where you are, Strange. You’re in Valhalla. Look how crowded it is. That’s not victory, you mortal boob. This is death!”

Dr. Strange stared at his drink, lips pursed in puzzlement, contemplating the cosmic meaning of finding mead in his mead horn.

“Strange!” Loki yelled, clearly frustrated.

Dr. Strange looked up, annoyed at having his contemplations interrupted. He glared at Loki. “Shome god you are. Didn’t even make it to the feenal beetle. Battle. You did before Thansos even got to errth.”

Loki bent down and whispered into Dr. Strange’s ear.

“No, Loki, you aren’t still acshally live. Yer in Vallalal. Doncha know your own afffter-life? It’s er mithhhlogy,” Dr. Strange said haughtily. And loudly.

“Shhhh! You nit! Don’t you know what spoilers are?!? That I’m alive is a secret. That’s supposed to be a secret from the fans!”

A figure in red and black with two swords on his back walked up and smiled. But nobody could tell. Mask, duh.

Loki regarded Deadpool. “What are you doing here?”

“You went meta and broke the fourth wall. I’m the only one allowed to do that. I’m here to tell you to knock it off. Quit breaking the rules.”

“I’m the God of Mischief. It’s my divine right to break the rules.”

“Copycat.”

“Spoil sport.”

“Xerox.”

“I’ve seen your face. Trust me, nobody wants to be a copy of you.”

“That was a low blow, man.”

Dr. Strange looked at his drinking buddy. “Do you even knowsh what they’re sayin’?”

The Viking shrugged. “Doesn’t sound like anything to me.”

Deadpool looked at the Viking. “Hey now, knock it off. We’ve got enough cross-overs here. Dr. Strange in Valhalla. Me here with you guys. And now West World? Three’s too many. Let’s not get carried away.”

“Four,” Loki said. “There was a Skyrim one earlier.”

“Four,” Deadpool corrected himself. “That’s crazy even by my standards.”

Dr. Strange, wrongly concluding that sobriety would help matters, murmured a few words, dispelling all traces of alcohol from his body. “Look, I don’t know who this Spiderman-looking guy is, Loki, but you’re not alive like you think. ‘God of Mischief’? God of Denial seems more like it. If this were Poltergeist, I’d be telling you to look for the bright light, Loki. Because you’re dead!”

“Spiderman? Really??” Deadpool chimed in.

“Shh! I told you! Spoilers! Stop it!” Loki cried.

Deadpool looked at Loki. “Hey man, don’t get your panties in a twist. If there’s one thing I know, it’s bad writing. And this writing is so bad, it’s screaming ‘fan fic’ the same way your mom was screaming out my name last night. These aren’t spoilers. These are just fan theories.”

Dr. Strange looked at the Viking for help.

“Doesn’t sound like….” He started, then caught Deadpool’s glare and fell silent.

Meanwhile, Loki’s eyes narrowed at Deadpool. “My mother’s dead. And I’ll thank you to only speak of her in respectful tones.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that. I was respecting the hell out of her last night, especially when she put on the extra-large strap-on.”

Simultaneously, Loki and Deadpool drew blades, Loki’s daggers to Deadpool’s katanas. The Vikings nearby roared their approval, and a chant of “Fight! Fight! Fight!” emerged, and side bets started getting placed. But Dr. Strange, rolling his eyes, decided to put Loki on ice before any damage could be done. “Looks like you could use another 30 minutes of freefall, my friend,” he muttered, opening a dimensional doorway below Loki’s feet and another above his head.

Loki, standing on top of the golden dimensional door and patently NOT falling through it, spared Dr. Strange a quick smirk and wink, then turned his attention back to Deadpool, who was charging forward with his katanas spinning. Loki dropped into a knife-fighter’s stance and raised his daggers, bracing to meet the charge. Deadpool, having survived far worse than a few knife cuts, barreled full steam into Loki, but met nothing but air.

And that included underneath his feet as he stepped onto the weird golden glyph under Loki. Deadpool started falling. And falling. And falling. Just endless falling into blackness.

Suddenly, he emerged from the ceiling of Valhalla. Happy to be among the living (er, dead) once again, he smiled, braced for impact… and fell through the glyph on the floor again, back into darkness. “That’s not even fair!” he yelled as he continued to fall. “That was just a tease! You didn’t put out! You’re just like Jennie Jones at my junior prom! Except worse—you didn’t even kiss me with tongue!”

Dr. Strange watched the illusion of Loki standing on his dimensional door vanish as Deadpool crashed into it. Realizing what had happened, he began looking around the room for the real Loki. Seeing him approaching through the crowd wearing an obnoxious grin, he quickly passed his hands through a familiar mystic gesture, placing another dimensional doorway under Loki, who calmly kept smiling and walking. “’Fool you once, shame on me, fool you twice, shame on you’, isn’t that what they say? I just wish you were more of a challenge. Now that you’re sober, do you think that feeble brain of yours can follow what I’m trying to say?”

“You!” Deadpool yelled as he briefly fell through the physical reality between the two dimensional portals.

“Feeble brain?” Dr. Strange bristled. “I’ll have you know I set a record at Harvard Medical School for fastest student to ever complete the medical program, I was the pre-eminent neurosurgeon in the world and after my accident I went on to become—”

“A mister of the mastical arts, yes, yes, I heard,” Loki finished for him. “Try to keep up. I’m not dead. I’m a god of, what was it? Oh yeah—mischief! And trickery! You might have noticed I have some talent with illusions,” he continued, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Thanos DIDN’T kill me. I set him up to THINK he did, so that I could continue to operate under his radar and try to turn things around. Is any of this getting through, Strange?”

“Ass!” Deadpool yelled as he passed through again.

It was Dr. Strange’s turn to smirk. “Okay, so you’re not dead. Congratulations, you saved one guy, yourself. Way to go. I reviewed all the millions of possible timeline outcomes of the conflict with Thanos, saw that there was precisely and only one that led to his defeat, and that was to let him have the first battle, let him think that battle was the war, and keep Tony Stark alive because he has the key to turn everything back around.”

Loki replied, “That’s…. actually, not bad, Strange.” Loki looked uncomfortable in the wake of having given Dr. Strange a grudging compliment.

“Hole!” Deadpool yelled as he passed again.

Dr. Strange shrugged. “Well, you know, if what you say is true,” he gulped, and looked like he was eating a tart lemon, “About being alive and all I mean, that’s pretty good for facing Thanos, I didn’t manage it. I am dead.” Dr. Strange and Loki both continued to look uncomfortable. Then their looks of mutual discomfort slowly gave way to mounting horror.

Loki said, “Wait, did we just complement one another??”

Dr. Strange said, “I think we did. Do you know what this means??”

Loki started screaming in alarm: “Do you think it’s too late to—”

A terrible rending in the fabric of the universe destroys everything.

I am here to tell you that it really is true.  I guess we all need to listen to Dr. Who, and to stop blinking!!!  ....sigh...      I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with friends, family, and food.... holiday food really is the best.  With the new year starting though, a lot of folks start thinking about new things, and resolutions.  I'm not a fan of resolutions... unless they are to eat more bacon, read more books, crochet more blankets, or help folks buy (or sell) a home.... those are about the only resolutions I can keep!  Do you have resolutions?  Do you keep yours?     The holidays are really about family & home, I think.....having friends & families over for the holidays, or going to someone else's home for the holiday celebration...add that to the new year, and new beginnings and many people start thinking about the next big step.  Is it time for a new home?  Maybe your current home is too small for your family now, and it's time for  a bigger home?  Maybe your family has become smaller and it's time for a smaller home?  Or are you renting your current home, and want to be a homeowner? Purchasing a home, whether it's your first home, or you've owned homes before, is one of the four BIG steps we take in life.  What most folks don't know is where to start, and what questions do you need to ask yourself?  What questions do you ask a lender? A Realtor?  What about classes?  There are SO many right now (it's because it IS the beginning of the year), but how do you KNOW which one is going to give you the best information?    There are definitely some questions you should ask....Let's start with questions to ask yourself....  Bonus Answer.... What if I have a home currently, but want to get a new home?    I bought my first home in 2001.  It was an amazing time for my family, and while we made quite a few mistakes in the purchasing of the home (we went through a builders representative and didn't have our own Realtor), it was still exciting.  I started working for a builder shortly after we moved into our new home, and boy...was that an education.  A few years later we thought about selling, and buying a new home, but were not sure how that would work.   I mean....how do you buy a new home if you are IN the old home?  How would that work?  So we didn't.... we stayed, and that was ok as I was leaving the builder and working real estate outside of the builder by then...and it was best to stay put as the market was starting to slide...hello recession.  I started teaching home buyer education classes because I remember how lost I was when I purchased my first home.  I mean...  believe it or not, but I did take a class before I bought...it was a very LONG class, and they used a booklet that made ZERO sense to me, so it was no help whatsoever.  I wanted to teach classes that made SENSE, and that used the paperwork that people would actually see when buying a home....that was 15 years ago.  About 7 years ago, as the market was heating up from the recession, I had a client call me asking this very question...  HOW do they buy a new home when they own a home already?  How do they sell their current home?  What about paperwork? Agents?  Fees?  Marketing? How do they set up, or handle showings?  How do they sell, and buy at the same time?  So....  we came up for a class for that too.  www.freesellerclasses.com, for upcoming classes, and YES, THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS STILL APPLY TO YOUR SITUATION TOO.  You can always call me with questions too...  I'm always here to help... #1...  Do you have a steady income? When you decide it is time to try to buy a home, a lender is going to want to see a steady income.  Have you been on your job for at least 6 months?  Were you working before that?  Was it in the same industry?  If you weren't working before your current job, were you in school?  Were you in school for the occupation you are in, or something similar?  Are you self employed?  Do you have at least 2 years of 1099's and tax records to prove your income?  These are all questions a lender will ask, and need answers to.  Want more information on this part?  Contact Chris Berg at Cardinal Financial for answers.  He can be reached at Chris.Berg@cardinalfinancial.com, 503-320-0925.  Don't let the 503 number fool you....he is local.  :-)Owning a home is usually a bit more expensive than renting.  With the rising costs of monthly rent, your rent and mortgage payment may be about the same, but owning does have a few more expenses.  When you rent, and something breaks, or has an issue, you call your landlord, or rental management company, and eventually things get repaired.  When you own a home, YOU are the landlord, and so you need to budget for those home repair issues that will come up.  Take $20 from each check and have it automatically deposited in a credit union or financial institution of your choice.  Do not have a check book or card for this account.  This is your home maintenance fund.  You know I love the home warranty, and remember that you can continue it year after year.  Use this fund to pay for that next year of the home warranty.  However, remember that the home warranty does not cover roofing, windows, walls, flooring, or siding.  This account should also be used to maintain and take care of those items as well.  #2...How much debt to you have?This is a big one.  We all have debt, and don't get me wrong....I think Dave Ramsey is a good guy with many excellent ideas, but there is one area that he preaches that actually hurts you in the pursuit of buying a home.  The idea of a cash based living style is wonderful, but when it comes to buying a home this will actually hurt you.  Strange as it is, having NO credit is worse than having BAD credit!  Some debt is actually good....not a lot...but some.  A lender will base the amount of your pre-approval on how much income you have vs how much debt you have.  Your mortgage payment can only be a certain percentage of your disposable income which, in a nutshell, is your income minus your debt.  Some debt is good because it gives you a history of payments.  Are you credit worthy?  Do you pay your debts?  Do you pay those debts on time?  Are you reliable?  Too much debt is bad because the ratio of your debt to your income is too high.  When you are applying for a mortgage, that is (for some of us) the largest debt we will ever carry.  How do lenders know if you will pay back that debt?  They will look at your credit score...which is determined by how well you pay your current debt.  This kinds of leads me to our next question. #3...  What is your credit score?Ah yes...the dreaded credit score!  In the upcoming weeks we will spend some time talking about credit scores...the good, the bad, and the ugly.  For right now though, a credit score is based on your credit history.  It tells the lender a story about your reliability of repaying your debt.  Frankly, at some time, we all have credit issues...or at least most of us do.  Many moons ago, when my husband and I were in the early years of our marriage, we had 'issues'.  We had 2 young children, and a ton of medical debt.  When our son was a baby, we declared chapter 7 bankruptcy.  At the time it was the only thing we could do.  My husbands wages were being garnished, and we couldn't even afford diapers.  We were, in a word, BROKE...and only going broker.  So, we made the decision to go bankrupt.  It was, looking back at it, really the best decision we could have made.  After the discharge, we took it upon ourselves to learn about how 'this' all works.  I think they should teach budgeting, and credit in schools.  This lack of understanding gets a lot of young adults in trouble....of course....just like everything else here this is just my opinion  :-)  So, we learned, and we made better decisions, and choices.  We learned to live within our means.  We learned to stock up, and save.  We went back to school to better ourselves, and our situations so we could provide a better life for (at the time) two children.  Our oldest daughter, and our son in law had a baby this year, and like most young couples they are broke. I guess it is where most of us start. She *barely* remembers what it was like when she was very young.So about that Credit Score....A credit score is based on what type of credit you have, if you make your payments on time (late payments ding your credit score), how much credit you are carrying, and if you pay off your credit in a timely fashion.  Do you have a car loan?  Do you make the minimum credit payment, or more?  Have you paid off a debt?  If you have paid off a credit card....don't close the account because closing the account can hurt your credit score.  Cut up the card if you want, but keep the account open.  Do you have high credit balances?  Lenders don't like to see this because if you have high credit balances it means you have less credit to draw on in case of emergency, and let's face it, we all have emergencies sometimes.  In short, a credit score is based on your past credit history, and lenders use this number to determine how risky it is to loan to you.  With lending...it is all about risk.  They prefer to loan money to individuals with reliability.  They don't want to loan money to individuals with a high risk...someone who most likely won't pay back the money.  So what can you do if your credit score is somewhat, less than stellar?  Call your lender, or call Chris.  They can go over your credit report with you, and point out the areas that you need to address.  They can, and should, actually HELP you to understand your credit report, and should be able to give you some steps to take to better your credit score.  Is it hard work?  Yes...but the end result is absolutely worth it.  It may take some time, but if you do all the steps, we can....and will...help you find a home.  What is 'good' credit?  Most loans will want to say a 'mid-score' of at least 620.  There are three credit scoring companies, Equifax, Transunion, and Experian.  The lender will use the middle score of the three.  The better the credit score, the lower your interest rate for some loans as they have determined you have less risk. With a few loans, you can go as low at 580 on your credit score, but there are some 'hiccups' with that.  The majority of loan programs, especially the loan programs that help home buyers with downpayment will require a 620 mid score to loan money to buy a home.     #4... Do you have a down payment?  Do you need help with one?There are still a few 100% loan programs for those without a down payment, but there are a few strings for these.... mainly location, or being a member of the military.  Surprisingly, you don't have to be a first time home buyer for these programs.  What if you are a first time home buyer thought?  Well, there is quite a few down payment grants & loans out there that can help with that.  Yes, there really is!  Many lenders, and classes will talk about one...maybe 2, of them...but there are some grants to help with your down payment too.  No lie...  There are also other ways to come up with a down payment....401k, 'gifts', tax refunds, etc.  All of these options (and the pros/cons of each) are discussed by Chris Berg at the free & non-promotional home buyer education classes. However, and this is VERY IMPORTANT, remember that you do need money for a earnest money deposit, the home inspection, and the appraisal though.  Anyone who tells you that you don't need any money to buy a home is blowing smoke.... *and I'll let you finish that*   #5....  Have you taken a home buyer education class?Buying a home, whether you have a home already, or are a first time home buyer, is a tense, exciting, thrilling, fun, and yet scary time for everyone.  These classes are about 3 - 3 1/2 hours long and will go over the entire real estate process & what the papers all really mean to you.  The lender will go over the entire loan process including closing costs, down payment loans/grants, and the loans (including the 100% loans), the pros & cons of each (not just the good stuff, but the things you really do need to know too) , credit (and help to get you there), interest rates, and more.  The real estate portion will help you understand the steps, the questions to ask a Realtor, inspections, appraisals, earnest money, and what all those papers involved in an offer really mean.  The classes are free, non-promotional, and taught at community centers for your convenience.   Before you talk with a Realtor, or a lender, and definitely BEFORE you sign any papers with either a Realtor or a lender... TAKE A CLASS.  A home buyer education class should be your first step....not the last one.  When you call to rsvp for a class.... ask how long the Realtor and lender have been teaching classes.  Ask how long the Realtor has been licensed.  Ask where the classes are being held at....are you going to a lender office?  A real estate office?  What will they go over?  There's nothing wrong with taking more than one class too..  Buying (and selling) a home are some of the biggest things that you will ever do.  The only thing that will cost you more money is having a child....and wouldn't it have been nice to have a handbook for that?  :-D                         Information is power, and I hope that I am able to help you.  Good luck, and as always...May the odds be ever in your favor out there....  If you are looking for a real estate agent, I would love to be able to help you.                                                                             As always....this is just a quick overview.... please remember that your agent, and your lender work for YOU.  You drive the bus...we are merely GPS to help you get to your goals.  Like the classes, this weekly blog email is to help you with your home adventure.  The goal is to be informative and non-promotional.  :-)  We are, however, hoping you will call and want us to help with your adventure.  If you have any questions about this, or something you have heard...or if you would like me to help you with your home adventure, please call, email,  text, or facebook me anytime.  I am, as always, happy to help!
