i feel so weird being a huge Quentin Quire fan when like I despise the majority of his appearances or at least have a lot of gripes with them

Greetings! I'm asking the reverse of a question from a few weeks ago.
Who would be each ASOIAF character's favourite X-man, or mutant if you prefer? Obviously there's a lot of ASOIAF characters, only whoever strikes your fancy of course.
Thanks!
I could have sworn I had done this years ago, but I think I must have gotten a draft or something eaten back in 2018 when I did the reverse of this. In order to make this a bit more manageable, I'm going to stick with ASOIAF POV characters only.
Bran - Xavier. A morally ambiguous disabled psychic. Kind of over-determined, really.
Catelyn - Madelyne Pryor. A wronged wife with red hair granted dark powers to wreak revenge.
Daenerys - Jean Grey. A woman of immense supernatural power who literally walks through fire? C'mon.
Eddard - Cyclops. Honorable warrior respects honorable warrior.
Jon - also Cyclops, but only after the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Arya - Laura Kinney or Gabby. Not sure which.
Sansa - starts as Firestar fan (justice for Lady Butterrum!) ends as Emma Frost stan.
Tyrion - this is more a deep cut, but I think Tyrion would be a huge Whiz-Kid fan, especially his S.W.O.R.D era incarnation.
Theon - I think Theon would be a Quentin Quire fan; something about the combination of great potential and raging insecurity.
Davos - Gambit comes closest, but I could see an argument for Storm, especially Storm's depowered era.
Melisandre - Rachel Summers. Fire, Mother Askani prophecies, the whole shebang.
Jaime - big fan of the Fenris twins. Just kidding. He's super into Angel/Warren Worthington III, and has confused thoughts about whether Warren is better off with Candy Southern or Psylocke.
Brienne - super into the Captains Britain.
Samwell Tarly - I think he'd be a Beast fan, but Percy's X-Force would make him very sad.
Aeron Greyjoy - Exodus is another predetermined choice.
Victarion Greyjoy - doesn't see why Sabertooth has such a bad reputation.
Asha Greyjoy - big Laura Kinney fan.
Arienne Martell - I could see her being an Emma Frost stan.
Barristan Selmy - Cable. Again, white-haired grizzled soldier who protects children of destiny. Not a hard pick.
Quentyn Martell - has a soft spot for Beak.

"riot at xavier's" isn't really my favorite arc but it gave me one of my favorite x-characters: quentin quire
Started liking this guy mostly at Jason Aaron's "Wolverine And The X-Men" which gave us a new perspective on his character and also a nice character development along with new relationships both with teachers and students. Went from asshole to actually wanting and liking to be a good guy, well done!
One of my favorite aspects about WATXM is how Quentin's change happens with the help of Wolverine and the development of a teacher-student bond. Logan sees that Quentin is still young and an idiot and that he can change and maybe just needs some assistance. Quentin gets there with a little help from his friends and also by working himself to be better because he starts liking to be a good guy. It's a redemption arc that feels natural.
From here, Quentin Quire had a lot of potential. Newly-redeemed, wanting to do good, having a really interesting friend group, cool powers, being an omega telepath and even a potential in romance stories. I'm sure he could do well in the newest X-Men group or as a new member in an already-existing one/new lineup
Strain's "Generation X" really had me hopeful because there were characters I liked set in a scenario that give a similar vibe to Aaron's WATXM at the same time introducing us some new stories and developing these characters to new places. I was kinda sad to see Quentin's arc was basically rebooted.
His development is sort-of-reversed for the sake of having this redemption arc again in a much similar way: a teacher (now Jubilee), some friends (this Generation X) and Quentin himself works towards a redemption to his character. While I would say this one is kinda excusable, because maybe he just wasn't coping well with Logan's death combined with being around a new mentor figure and (some) new friends, I can't really excuse Thompson's "West Coast Avengers"
Quentin is once again put in a new setting and in a new team and is an asshole who has to grow through another redemption arc that feels the same as Generation X's. At some point, it really feels like Thompson didn't really bother to read some of Quentin's past books or at least WATXM. Besides, I really dislike this redemption arc.
"Generation X" and WATXM focused on a redemption through a mentor figured which is a lot better (to me, at least) than what it felt as a "changed by love". Basically what I got was "Quentin has a romantic relationship with Gwen and that motivated him to change" and really that is so ???
Sorry, Gwentin shippers, but I really dislike this couple. It really feels like a changed-by-love story and completely ignores the way Logan and Jubilee took care of him. It's the most important relationship Quentin has in the book and that love-hate thing was so based on a mischaracterization of Quentin that it Did Not Feel Right.
Quentin was being constantly sidelined by the team and mostly of them either blatantly ignored him or had fights with him. They only have like a single scene that indicates they are heading towards a better friendship. That's it. Don't get me wrong, I like West Coast Avengers and I understand people who like, but it mischaracterizes Quentin and reverts his development a lot.
Which is sad, because WCA Quentin is my favorite Quentin art
Tumblr media
If I were in charge of Marvel Studios, I would either continue the Generation X storyline with them doing good ol' superhero missions and developing as teen heroes or would have made Quentin and his Jean Grey School friends start their own superhero team and develop as teen heroes and trying to handle it all without adults around. Probably with a lot of goofy missions like WCA's land-sharks.
I would start talking about the new X-Force book by Benjamin Percy but it has taken such a weird story with Quentin and Phoebe and Quentin dying then coming back as an old man that it deserves its own post.

BECAUSE I'M STILL UPSET BY RECENT EVENTS...
Warning: my convoluted conspiracy theories and ranting lol
Tumblr media
We're only on part one of the Sabretooth War arc, and while I'm deeply unhappy with how that issue turned out, there's technically still plenty of time to introduce a twist that fixes everything (or at least provides a glimmer of solace from that clusterfuckery.)
I've thought on it, slept on it, and came up with a few theories that COULD dampen the blow of last issue.
In no particular order:
Twist Option 1: It's a fake-out and Akihiro is technically not dead. How, you may ask?
The Sabretooth crew's first target was Quentin Quire -- who is supposedly an omega-level telepath. Now, Logan's got telepathic resistance, but he's never been completely immune.
We also saw the Sabretoothes (Sabreteeth?) use a device to knock out Sage and Black Tom, one that distinctly has Quire's Pink Power Signature:
Tumblr media
They haven't explained exactly WHAT this device is, but it wouldn't surprise me if they took Quire's brain and made a telepathic brain scrambler device. (wouldn't be the first time Marvel did something similar AND we don't see Quire's head in the final page). Creed's a savage, but also a clever bastard. He wouldn't be opposed to strats like that.
Who knows what that device is? Maybe its some bullshit like "projecting Logan's fears" and that's what he THINKS happened.
Though in this case, it is likely that Akihiro WAS at least captured and greatly injured (but still has his healing factor and is alive). Perhaps will come up later when Creed feels like fucking with Logan some more. (Cue badass sibling rescue mission when Laura finds out)
Not great, but perfectly in character for an extra-savage Sabretooth to draw out the Logan Birthday Bash. (And I'm sorry, but at the barest of minimums, Akihiro wouldn't go down that easy -- he's younger, faster, and much more conniving than his father. Logan has significant training, but he tends to drop it in favor of charging headfirst every time. Aki's always been more disciplined than that. Same with Laura, but that's another rant.)
Now this means Quire is definitely dead, but he also has a bunch of body doubles from X-Force, and he recently self-resurrected after that Cerebrax thing and a back-up body. If a character was going to self-resurrect, it'd be him. (Not to mention, if Betsy Braddock can restore her entire body via telepathy/telekinetics, he should be able to as well)
Twist Option 2: Akihiro IS dead, but there is a secret back-up resurrection (maybe limited use or something)
In the description-preview thing of X-Force #49, they're indicating they're gonna bring back Avengers-era Beast to take down current Beast. Now maybe they just happen to find a Beast clone to upload it to, but there's gotta be at least the groundwork for secret cloning somewhere (I mean, he cloned Wolverine too, so I don't see why not). Avengers-era Beast and Sage (Or just Sage alone honestly) could figure it out.
Then we just need a back-up database of Cerebro to upload memories and all is well. (I'm pretty sure X-Force already had a complete secret back-up database, or if not in canon yet, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out they did.).
Twist Option 3: Whatever is going on in ROTPOX comes to at least a partial fruition.
Either Xavier somehow succeeds (I don't think that'll be the case, tbh) and Krakoa is no more but everyone killed is reset or there's some partial success that resets Krakoa and resurrection can resume.
Either way, it'll reset the progress Akihiro and Logan have made and bleh.
(This would be such a fucking cop-out, in my opinion, but I digress)
Twist Option 4: Secret Weapon From the Exiles Crew.
Now called The Maroons, Nekra and crew still have that weird Krakoa seed. We don't know what it does yet. Implied to be really bad for Sabretooth, but maybe it also has secret powers like "restoring life to Creed's recent kills via draining his corpse" or some bullshit.
idk Krakoa science-magic.
Twist Option 5: There's another goddamn Muramasa blade/weapon out there.
What ever happened to Laura's Muramasa Armor? And the shield? How many weapons does Muramasa still have out there?
a. that armor will come up, and Laura will reclaim it. Since it also has a piece of Akihiro's soul, they'll extract that (probably breaking the armor in the process) and restore him via dope sword magic.
b. There's conveniently ANOTHER Muramasa weapon, one that can kill Sabretooth but ALSO has life restoring abilities (a weapon created for the perfect balance between life and death)
c. Solem lost his sword via general debauchery. And now Logan is gonna go get it. But also there's secret sword magic (which has life restoring powers) that Muramasa conveniently didn't tell Logan because he didn't feel like it
d. Logan's gonna go get his Muramasa blade (or one of them -- I'm pretty there's at least a couple at this point. wouldn't be surprised if there's secretly more) and there's the same secret sword magic as point c.
e. Percy and LaValle shock us all by giving Itsu some actual character -- where she knew Muramasa herself and gave up a bit of her soul for a secret weapon cuz it turns out she was a badass in her own right, which now can be used in the present day to both kill Sabretooth AND restore her beloved son. (And Logan never knew because he's a dense SOB and has a tendency to put his deceased love interests on a pedestal)
Twist Option 6: No twist at all. Akihiro is dead, gonna be dead for a bit, and everything is pain and suffering :(
At bare minimum, I wanna see Aurora pull her brother's moves from X-Men #163:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just full speedster mode and kick his ass. She'd probably be more ruthless and I'd like to see that.
Or speedster sibling tag-team mode with said ruthless ass-kicking.
(I crave vengeance)
That's all I got. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading lol

Quentin Quire: The Evolution from Morrison to Aaron
Over the past few years I’ve noticed that there’s a fairly sizable group of comic book fans who have taken issue with how the character Quentin Quire has been portrayed since his debut in New X-Men by Grant Morrison. Despite there being a lot of fans like myself who personally enjoyed Quire’s redemptive rehabilitation arc during Jason Aaron’s Wolverine & the X-Men arc into a quirky faux-rebel punk, there are quite a few readers who argue that redeeming Quire is inappropriate since Morrison originally framed them as being akin to a fascistic school-shooter during the Riot at Xaviers arc. I’ve discussed at length before about how I personally didn’t have an issue with future writers like Aaron redeeming Quire, especially since I personally really enjoyed how said-arc was handled in WATXM despite the more comedic shift in tone in regards to Quentin’s personality. However, one thing I recently realized was that despite fan-complaints that Aaron completely misunderstood Quire’s character or completely altered his personality, there are actually some subtle ways in which Aaron’s version of Quire is not only reflective of Morrison’s original characterization of him, but gradually abandons those initial negative traits in order to fulfill a positive-growth character arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I was recently reading through a series of articles by ComicWatch editor Travis Hedge Coke titled “Examining New X-Men,” and in them Coke described Quire in those original Morrison stories as being portrayed as a misogynistic incel, stating that “Quire’s heterosexual jealousy throws him immediately into confrontation with men or boys he deems as challenges for the top position in the eyes of girls and women, he perceives girls and women as prizes as a reward for obtaining the top position… [and he] has incredible telepathic gifts including being subtly and intensely persuasive.”
And I will freely admit that... yeah... this kind misogynistic alpha-male behavior is on full display via Quire not only humiliating his fellow student Slick by essentially outing him telepathically through undoing an illusion of his idealized self due to low self-esteem about his actual appearance (consequently resulting in his girlfriend Tattoo rejecting him), but one of the reasons he staged the entire riot at Xavier’s was in a creepy attempt to impress one of the five Stepford Cuckoos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additionally, the article also suggested that Quire was also guilty of outright sexual assault since Slick’s aforementioned ex-girlfriend Tattoo immediately joins Quire’s “Omega Gang” and is madly in love with him, and following the riot one of Quire’s gang members desperately tries to convince Wolverine that they were all being mind-controlled by Quire. While Morrison leaves the story vague about whether or not this was actually true or just another lie from one of Quire’s followers to avoid accountability for their crimes, Xavier did state earlier in the arc that Quire’s telepathic abilities were “deep and subtle enough to influence the minds around him” when discussing his development of a cult-following in the form of the Omega Gang. Coke even went as far as to describe Morrison’s Quire as being akin to a younger, less rapey version of Wolverine’s arch-nemesis Sabretooth. It's also worth noting that there also exists subtle racialized undertones (ontop of gendered ones...) in the original Riot at Xavier's arc considering the white and fascistic Quire's overt manipulations of two Black characters in the form of Slick & Tattoo...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furthermore, in a separate article for GraphicPolicy by Dani Kinney, despite her more charitable interpretation of Morrison’s Quire as someone who was driven to extremes due to frustration with Xavier’s flawed liberal-centrist approach in response to increasing human violence against other mutants, Kinney still criticizes Quire of being racially biased due to his victimization and exploitation of Slick and Tattoo respectively (both of which Morrison frames as bad things in the comic).
Interestingly, later when Quentin Quire began to undergo a rehabilitation arc in Jason Aaron's run on Wolverine & the X-Men (since Logan recognized Quire’s potential as a gifted student and telepath and didn’t want him to fall down the dark path of a mutant terrorist)...
Tumblr media
...whether or Jason Aaron intended to or not he ended up showcasing Quire growing beyond the subtle characteristics of racism and misogyny that Morrison originally depicted during the character’s overtly villainous phase. For instance, throughout WATXM Quire begins to form a legitimate friendship and even romantic relationship with his fellow student Idie Okonkwo. Despite this, their first interaction showcases Quentin falling back on his old negative habits, making awkward pick-up lines and advances at Idie (which she hilariously sarcastically rejects in a nonchalant manner, and even Broo points out the inappropriateness of).
Tumblr media
As the series progresses however, Quire begins to recognize Idie not as some prize but as a human being with her own autonomy. This is gradual shift first manifests during a school dance in the AVX tie-ins, where Quire is completely dumbfounded to see Idie uncharacteristically wanting to dance with him, even noting that she previously rejected his advances. This sudden shift in behavior for Idie was due to her worsening struggles with internalized-mutantphobia and religious trauma due to having been forced to kill someone by Cyclops in X-Men: Schism, feelings which were recently exacerbated by the Hellfire Brat’s gaslighting of her to give into what she mistakens to be her true “sinful, monstrous nature” via an android televangelist-style priest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quire's concerns Idie’s well-being and mental health only increase following an incident during the Frankenstein Murder Circus arc Idie nearly killing a sorceress a fit of traumatic rage due to she herself once nearly being burned at the stake by her Nigerian Catholic village when she first manifested her mutant powers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This eventually culminates climatic Hellfire Academy arc wherein Quentin Quire actually infiltrates the Hellfire Brat’s supervillain-training school when he discovered Idie enrolled (both due to her worsening religious trauma and gaslighting, as well as wanting to investigate who shot her friend Broo and reduced him to a feral state), and seeks to rescue her from a that toxic environment. Unfortunately, Quire's rescue attempt backfires and he himself ends up getting captured and thrown into the Hellfire Academy's "detention room."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Quire at this point hadn’t fully overcome his previous negative characteristics (he’s partially motivated by basic jealousy towards Broo and at one point thinks to himself that he might be forced to “telepathically coax” Idie into fleeing the Hellfire Academy), he simultaneously wants to prevent her from killing Broo’s shooter, as he wants to prevent her from going down a similar dark path that he previously did.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, I don’t know if this was intentional or not but Aaron actually kinda sort of portrays Kade Kilgore, the Black King of the Hellfire Brats, as somewhat of a dark foil to Quentin Quire. Kilgore as he’s presented in WATXM is essentially like a younger but wealthier version of the kind of jerk Quire used to be during the Morrison New X-Men run. This is demonstrated not only through Kade expressing disappointment at Quire’s failure to live up to the standards of the supervillain academy due to Quentin’s past track record, but Kade is someone who actively manipulates and gaslights Idie by further feeding into her internalized mutantphobia and guilt over having killed before, all with the intent of influencing her into becoming both a murderous supervillain as well as his Black Queen of the Hellfire Club whom he would “have by his side at all times.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And these are inappropriate behaviors which Kilgore undoubtedly picked up from his abusive corrupt billionaire father despite his own protestations to the contrary (in X-Men: Schism, Kade’s murder of his father was assisted by a secretary who wanted revenge for Kilgore Sr. sexually harassing her). Plus the Hellfire Club in general has a long history of being manipulative and possessive towards women, like with Jean Grey during the classic Dark Phoenix Saga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So despite Kade claiming otherwise, the Hellfire Club’s misogynistic and manipulative behavior definitely seems to be generational.
In a sense, Kade Kilgore’s creepy & misogynistic manipulation of Idie is somewhat reflective of how Quire previously mistreated characters like Tattoo & Sophie Cuckoo during Morrison’s run. It also demonstrates that while Aaron mostly portrayed the Hellfire Brats as comedic joke-villains due to them being sociopathic spoiled rich 12-year-olds who murdered their parents and seized control over their corporate assets, he still fleshed out members like Kade Kilgore as being negatively influenced by the sexist & manipulative behaviors of his abusive father.
Fortunately however, Idie rejects both Kilgore’s gross manipulations and her own internalized-mutantphobia. While Idie initally seems to accept Kilgore’s offer of becoming his Black Queen, she did this solely just to trick Kilgore into confessing that he was the one who shot her friend Broo. And although Idie nearly went through with her plan to murder the little creep in retaliation, she he ultimately refuses to give into hatred and bloodshed (brought about by both her past religious trauma and the inhumane teachings of the literal supervillain academy) when she realizes that she is still capable of feeling love and and experiencing happiness after witnessing Toad of all people (he was the janitor at both the Jean Grey School & Hellfire Academy) refusing to kill a mentally unstable & murderous Husk (Paige was experiencing extreme mood swings due to a latent secondary mutation tying her emotions to her skin-shedding/transformation powers) because of the love they had developed for each other in previous issues of the series. Sparring Kilgore’s life, Idie then teams-up with Quire to rebel against and destroy the oppressive Hellfire Academy (a conclusion to WATXM’s running gag of Quire constantly fantasizing about instigating another riot and destroying the Jean Grey School).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And while some fans have argued that Quire & Idie becoming a couple creeped them out due to Idie being younger than him, I don’t have too much of a problem with it since was only a 2-year age gap between the two in Aaron’s run (Idie & Quire were 14 & 16 respectively; this was confirmed by the Jason Latour’s follow-up run on WATXM, which featured Quire having his 17th birthday), and seeing Quentin & Idie develop legitimate feelings for each other as they both underwent positive-change arcs actually felt kind of sweet IMO. Plus, Idie was the one who ultimately had to rescue Quire instead of the other way around due to his own rescue attempt FAILING, and the two co-lead the revolt against the Hellfire Brats.
Essentially, Aaron’s version of Quentin Quire felt like a more mature version of Morrison’s despite his new more comedic faux-rebel personality. Quentin by the end of WATXM was no longer a manipulative incel, but had instead evolved into someone who actually learned to respect the autonomy and personhood of not just women, but women of color in particular. This was something that completely flew over my head when I initially read WATXM, but after reading Travis Hedge Coke’s New X-Men articles I began to notice how vastly different Quire’s attitude and treatment towards Tattoo & Idie were, especially since both characters are Black girls. These are some deeper observations about Quentin Quire’s character development & positive change arc that I truly appreciate, since they make me realize that Aaron seemed to understand Quentin’s character a lot more than a lot of fans give him credit for. Sadly though, all this does seem to be lost on a lot of fans due to not just having prior memories Morrison’s more villainous portrayal of Quire, but also due to series which came after Aaron’s WATXM such as Christina Strain’s run on Generation X apparently having Quentin Quire regress into being rude and condescending towards Idie… sigh, oh well that’s the downside of having different writers with different interpretations I guess…
Tumblr media
Overall, I'm not against redeeming Quentin Quire like a lot of other fans are since Wolverine in Jason Aaron's run was following in the footsteps of Charles Xavier's philosophy. Logan wanted to give Quire a second-chance and try and mold him into something better than a potential future mutant-terrorist, which he ultimately ended up succeeding in. And while Quentin still boasts about wanting to be the bad kid who destroys the Jean Grey School, most of it is now him being a faux-pretentious brat as he never exploited any opportunity to do so and instead developed empathy with his fellow students, and over the course of WATXM Quire developed leadership skills and even went out of his way to rescue the X-Men at several points in Aaron's series. His faux-rebel attitude is played more for laughs now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plus, the X-Men in general have a long history of trying to redeeming or rehabilitating supervillains like Magneto, Mystique, Juggernaut, and even Apocalypse and Mister Sinister.
So why is Quentin Quire off limits for a redemption arc then? Heck, I'd personally argue that Mister Sinister being allowed a seat on Krakoa's Quite Council is far more egregious considering that in past continuity Sinister was literally a Nazi scientist who was present at the Auschwitz death camp.
That seems far worse to me than Wolverine trying to redeem a delinquent teenager who once staged a half-assed riot at Xaviers...

Too shy .. but I do agree with you on the Cerebrocast not getting QQ 😔.
OMG HI TWITTER PERSON ok context for everyone else i’ve been listening to cerebrocast (who do not like quentin) but i personally have so many thoughts about quentin quire and i DO hate it because he’s the stupidest whitest bitch in existence.
the thing is that i need his story to have been about white trans/queer rage because he literally looks like he has pink hair and pronouns and something something he looks like a walking trans flag with the pink hair and blue psionics and he’s a fucking PHOENIX HOST. YOU KNOW, THE X-MEN’S MANIFESTATION OF FEMALE RAGE??? ANYWAY. its just nonsensical to me that in new x-men morrison chooses their incel school shooter allegory to be…. a punk counterculture radical anarchist mutant who is driven to action when he sees a (implied gay) mutant fashion designer/activist killed in a hate crime. like i just dont think morrison understands politics. it’s a story that demonises leftist radical protesting/riots, and implies the youth doing it are just fucked up/co-opting it for a trend, and are also just super addicted to drugs all the time lmfao. and it is even bizarrer in retrospect because everyone in comics and making comics now pretty much agrees now that magneto IS right. that is just how minority politics irl have developed!! charles’ assimilationist bullshit is long past!!
HOWEVER. i do think there is a way to redeem/fix that and that’s if we think of it as a story that demonises WHITE counterculture. if we take it as a story that’s like yeah, white leftism and white queer/trans rage without intersectionality is just white supremacy. that tbh is what it should’ve been and i’m never giving grant morrison that credit but that’s what i wanted bc my god white gays are annoying and quentin is like such a perfect encapsulation of that entitlement. tbh. i like him so much as a character but if i knew him irl i’d block him on all platforms and throw him off a cliff etc etc
like i think it’s fine to take quentin’s writing in riot at xavier’s at face value bc morrison WAS seemingly aiming for a criticism on how people co-opt politics to be trendy and as an outlet for more personal issues which does happen! i just think the optics are bizarre for that and it falls into wild horseshoe theory shit and i dont think it WORKS you know i think there’s more interesting ways to take that character that aren’t like “the youth’s anger and protesting and counterculture is stupid” especially because we don’t really HAVE any radical characters that arent consistently villainised. and i think people have tried to do that since wolverine and the x-men with a more defanged pathetic quentin who is i think bi now? idk last i remembered christina strain made him lie that benji was his boyfriend in gen x 2017 but does that count? have they said it more explicitly since then? who knows i dont remember either way i think he’s better having been kicked down a few rungs and given growth. i like that his biggest fear is losing his friends/community at school. im glad that ppl have made him more fun as a character now… but they’ve also done that while wiping the political beliefs/allegory out of his character and making him just that superior annoying dude instead of trying to tackle what it does mean for quentin to have a genuine rage and hatred for how the system oppresses and kills people like him. the story implies that rage was never really genuine and he was just acting out but that SUCKS and is BORING because fuck if im not also angry all the damn time about the state of the world! let us be angry about injustice without demonising that anger! like that is why i do think quentin does have a niche following of queer fans bc like for a moment we connected with that rage from a guy who looks like *waves hand in the air* that
also my hottest take that i got redpilled into via one article i read years ago is that i think idie/quentin/evan could’ve been the next insane phoenix jean/scott/logan love triangle. a LOT of work and writing would need to be done to actually make me care about quentin in any relationship but the potential was there and could’ve been great tbh. we’re long past that era now but sometimes i think about how i would reboot that whoooole schtick into something cohesive like it could’ve been a subversive little queer story of colour if watxm volume 2 wasnt just the quentin quire show and idie/evan got more spotlight and if it wasnt completely incomprehensible or had unfortunate art. BUT ANYWAY.
THIS GOT SO LONG AND IS SOOO INDECIPHERABLE SO SORRY ANON I JUST WANTED TO RANT AND TRULY TWITTER HAS A WORD LIMIT ❤️❤️ thank u for ur support ❤️❤️❤️

Tag/Brian Cruz Appreciation Post
Brian is the only Academy X character from the main two squads who never got any real character work in the main title, he remains pretty strictly a background character in Weir/DeFilippis and is quickly killed off in Kyle/Yost. But it's clear that before they were kicked off the book, Weir/DeFilippis were going places with him, and we can see it in the New X-Men: Hellions mini and in House of M.
(more under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this miniseries, the Hellions squad are all granted wishes by a villain named the Kingmaker. Julian's wish was for fame and glory, and pretty quickly his wish was granted when he stops the assassination of a governor, and the press is immediately all over him. It's later revealed that the journalist who spoke to him also works for the Kingmaker, and Brian was in on this and helped him out by directing the questions to her so that Julian could look good to the public.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later on, Brian is acting as an agent for Rockslide, who's wish was to become a pro wrestler. He reveals that his wish was simply to help his friends with their own wishes, and doesn't seem to have any problem with this at all. We know that his original wish the Kingmaker thought was dumb, so he changed it to this, which Julian is a bit bewildered by.
Brian is clearly a very selfless person, he is committed to getting his friends what they want and doesn't seem to care that much about what he wants for himself. I'm very curious what his original wish was, presumably it was something that he actually wanted for himself, but was okay with giving it up.
Weir/DeFilippis have talked about the direction they were taking Brian on their blog, where they stated that he had no sense of self outside of his friends. (x) This is definitely what I have analyzed from this mini as well.
We can also think about the fact hat Brian's powers are really specific and not exactly the most helpful in a combat situation. Pretty much every time he uses them it's shown to have a really short term effect. Compared to the rest of his teammates, with Julian and Sooraya being ridiculously powerful, Santo being very strong, Cessily's powers being very combat effective and Kevin's deadly touch, he probably feels very outclassed and useless. If having a sense of self is something he already struggles with, this must be a huge insecurity for him. In fact, part of the reason he might want to help his friends out so much with their wishes could be that he wants to feel useful for once.
In House of M, Brian is in a very different place as a character. Instead of being Julian's best friend and part of the Hellions, he's actually part of the "New Mutants Academy" along with Prodigy, Wallflower, The Stepford Cuckoos, and Quentin Quire.
Quentin was not a part of the Academy X class at all since he was a Morrison character and was comatose throughout the history of the book. However, since House of M was an alternate universe where a lot of dead people were shown to be alive, and a lot of wrongs were righted and "greatest wishes" came true, Quentin is here and appears as he did before the riot at Xavier's - his hair still brown and still looking like a nerd.
And case in point, everyone at this school seems to hate him, except for Brian.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brian consistently sticks up for Quentin when other students are being rude to him, though Quentin dismisses Brian each time he does. This is very in character for Quentin, but it's interesting that Brian doesn't have any (negative) reaction to the way that Quentin treats him.
Later, at the end of this issue, Quentin is forced to commit suicide by Laurie because he finds out via his telepathy that she and her dad are working for S.H.I.E.L.D.
Tumblr media
Brian eventually finds Quentin's body, and refuses to believe that he would have committed suicide. He also says that he was planning on hanging out with Quentin that night. Laurie's father, who is a therapist then comes in and lies that Quentin had been seeing him and was struggling with suicidal ideation, to cover up his and Laurie's tracks. Brian refuses to believe this as well, claiming that he would have known and that Quentin was his friend.
Heartbreaking as this scene is, despite the fact that Quentin was shown to be rude to Brian in front of others, it appears they were actually close friends. We can assume that Quentin either was much nicer to Brian when they were by themselves, or simply doesn't know how to be kind to his friends. My money's on the latter, and that Brian knew this and was alright with it. Brian is shown to be a very emotionally intelligent person, and Quentin struggles in relationships with others most of all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brian later is confronted by the Cuckoos, they offer their condolences and he lashes out, angry at them for being rude to him. They agree with Brian that they don't think he was the type to commit suicide, and Brian thinks more on this and begins to suspect Garrison's hand in Quentin's death because of his pheromone powers.
It's clear that Brian feels bad for Quentin, that all the other students hated him and didn't care to understand him. He was all Quentin had, and now Quentin is gone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later on, Karma catches Brian going through files to try to find evidence against Dr. Garrison, she doesn't believe him at first, but it still sets a bit of doubt in her that leads her to getting help from Doug Ramsey, using his powers to go through Dr. Garrison's computer and finding out that he's a deeply undercover agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Garrison then comes in and is about to kill them with his powers the same way his daughter killed Quentin, when Brian in turn uses his powers to save the teachers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brian accidentally ends up making Garrison kill himself by jumping out the window of the building trying to "get away" from himself. Brian feels awful about this, he didn't want to kill someone. But he saved Doug and Xuan's lives.
In this alternate universe, Quentin almost replaces Julian as Brian's best friend- the friend that he attaches himself too. Unlike his situation with the Hellions though, Brian doesn't have any friends outside of Quentin. It appears that the fact that he's Quentin's one true ally has made him an outsider at the New Mutant's Academy. Yet instead of feeling lonely and sorry for himself after Quentin's death, he is still thinking of Quentin and trying to prove that Quentin didn't kill himself. He cares deeply about Quentin, just like he cares deeply about Julian and the Hellions in the regular universe.
One thing I think is also very interesting about Brian is how in both examples, with both Julian and Quentin as his best friends, he joins in on them being rude, or even straight up bullying others, but when he is alone with either of them he's just a very sweet kid. This goes hand in hand with the fact that he's tied his sense of self to his friends.
I mentioned earlier that often times in House of M certain character's situations in the alternate universe are based on their "greatest desires." I have a theory about how this could apply to Brian. Weir and DeFilippis have stated that though they weren't planning on it, they did have an idea in their heads for a future arc where Brian falls in love with Julian. (x) This wouldn't have worked out for him, since Julian is in love with Sofia and presumably straight. However, Quentin Quire is a character who has always had a queer aesthetic and has had queer subtext as well. In House of M, it's possible that Brian's wish was being able to date his best friend and this has come true, with Quentin instead of Julian. This is just a wild theory though.
So yeah, though Brian didn't get any character work prior to House of M and the Hellions mini, just these two stories set him up for what could have been a really interesting arc, and hint at who this kid is on the inside. It makes it all the more devastating that Kyle and Yost killed him off, and he is very unlikely to get a story ever again. But, I can dream. I love this kid, and I wish there was more appreciation for him out there in general.

I know it’s still pretty close in votes with a lot of time left on the poll, but I’m loving the fact so many people are voting for Egg… not because they like him or anything, but because they hate Quentin and he sucks… and they’re right—Quentin is easily the worst X character of all time (and I mean that, even with 60 years of absolutely terrible X characters to choose from). Vote Egg; keep that little pink-haired twerp in the hole where he belongs. Even if Quentin ends up winning, it’s still a loss for his fans with how much he’s struggling against Egg of all people.
The only force stronger than support for one character is hatred for their opponent. That’s how Xavier lost to a Z-list character, after all.

Riot at Xavier’s, a character study in juvenile political rebellion
Tumblr media
Created by Grant Morrison and Keron Grant the character of Quentin Quire first appears in New X-Men #134, the issue that leads into the “Riot at Xavier’s” arc which spans from New X-Men #135-137 with a epilogue in issue #138. Quentin who is the main focus character and antagonist of the arc is a vehicle for Morrison and co to tell a story about the often surface level politics of alienated teenagers. The kind of person who doesn’t hold politics out of a real conviction or understanding of what those politics entail, but dresses themselves in the aesthetics of those politics as a means to performatively rebel to their elders and the world around them.
Many readers have drawn connections to Quentin Quire and the alt right which would arise about a decade or so after the publication of “Riot at Xavier’s”. The alt right, a primarily online Neo-fascist political movement, came to prominence in the 2010s, it prayed upon young disenfranchised men as its primary recruiting demographic, In this way it mimics the social critique Morrison was making with Quentin Quire. This has led many readers to draw a direct line between the two, the belief that Quentin Quire is an uncanny proto alt right character. How well does this hold up with a close read of his character in “Riot at Xavier’s” though? I intend to examine that very question, go into detail on the character arc of Quentin Quire, and the broader social critique being made.
Quentin feels alienated and rejected after learning from his parents that he was adopted, it fundamentally shakes his sense of self and throws him into questioning every aspect of his life. He lashes out because he feels disenfranchised, by rejecting Xavier’s dream he is venting his frustrations at the world, it's an outlet not a sincere position. Quentin adopts anger at the death of Jumbo Carnation not out of genuine anger at the grizzly murder, instead he takes the position when it becomes another outlet for him to point out the supposed hypocrisy of his elders and fuel his anger.
Throughout the course of the arc we see Quentin’s acts of rebellion escalate more and more into violent and destructive actions. It starts with cruelty to his peers, his actions escalate further when he and his Omega Gang start assaulting random groups of bigoted humans.
Quentin at the climax of the riot exclaims “So much for the dream! All my life I’ve waited for this “dream” to come true! We were promised peace and security! All my life! Where is it!” Here we see his true motivations, he wants the security of loving parents but his birth parents abused him (which we learn in X-Force by Ben Percy), his adopted parents are in his eyes not really his parents, he feels disowned and abandoned. And now he thinks his teachers also have failed him. Quentin Quire has devastating abandonment issues that fuel his actions in “Riot at Xavier’s”.
As much as the riot itself escalates the omega gang lack clear goals or demands for their actions, they are just wildly lashing out because of “kick” and juvenile angst. It’s very much like a baby crying out for the attention of the adults.
In their sadism the Omega Gang are blind and uninterested to the real harm done to their fellow mutants as shown when they attack a U-Men base. Instead of seeing that the U-Men are planning on attacking Xavier students they obsessed over sadistically murdering a U-Man. Their riot leads to the death of Dummy of the special class. It’s a display that they are completely uninterested in actually fighting against anti mutant bigotry but more use the concept of humans as a target for Quentin’s violence, their ideology is style over substance. They aren’t actually interested in the politics or understanding the reason for practicing them, they are only interested in the act itself.
Earlier in the arc we see Quentin wearing a shirt that reads “Magneto was right” which is a parallel to the real life use of Che Guevara on graphic T-shirts that was popular in the early 00s among students, the comparison Morrison is making is from an inexperienced juvenile ideology dressed up in leftist aesthetics. Much like in the real life co-option of leftist imagery the adoption of the motto  “Magneto was right” doesn’t represent an actual political position but the rebelling against the positions of the professor, the politics are purely stripped out and made into an aesthetic of juvenile defiance.
With the use of kick what was a normal rebellious cause for a teenager going through turmoil becomes the source of tangible harm, the Omega Gang’s actions don’t do anything to avenge Jumbo’s death. They  lash out without caring to understand the violent consequences of their actions. It’s action for the sake of action, a cult of action which is most commonly known as a characteristic of fascism as identified by Umberto Eco in Ur Fascism. However I  think that kind of methodology (or lack thereof) isn’t inherently right wing in nature, it can be found in unguided, vague, often experienced political organizing from many groups across the political spectrum.
All and all in “Riot at Xavier’s” Grant Morrison tells a story about adolescent angst and the political posturing that often comes at that age. In most children this is a healthy if somewhat cringe worthy point in development. In the case of Quentin Quire this development is derailed by a combination of Kick and his rapidly out of control mutant gift. Quentin’s politics are neither left nor right, they are vapid and void of political substance, if anything its dressed up in imagery of the left wing, from the Che Shirts to the Pink dyed hair. While Quentin’s path does mimic that of many young men who fell into the alt right, disenfranchised and angry looking for an outlet. But I don’t think that means that he needs to represent that subculture. I think that given time the character of Quentin Quire could grow and evolve out of this phase which luckily we are now seeing done masterfully in X-Force by Ben Percy, I’m excited to see how this character continues to grow up with his second chance and hope that readers open themselves up to seeing how he can grow behind his original actions in “Riot at Xavier’s”

How would you rank all nine OTH seasons from favorite to least favorite, no ties? S3 is my favorite but I have the fairly UO of loving S2 and S5 almost as much :)
1.) Season 3 (It's not close for me. This is easily the strongest season and OTH at its best. The show never came close to reaching the same heights again)
2.) Season 1 (In contrast to later seasons, this was a very down to earth era where everything happened organically rather than for drama or as a response to fan criticism. Watching the first season almost feels like reading a book. It all feels very well planned out and like everything that happens from the beginning is pretty much inevitable)
3.) Season 2 (The most underrated and unfairly hated season. It's literally just about Brucas, right? Even Naley fans admit that while they didn't like seeing their couple separated that the tour made for good angst and drama. But because Lucas decided he wanted Brooke instead of Peyton, oftentimes the entire season is written off even though there was so much solid character work and relationship development going on during this season. Admittedly, the loss of basketball and the soap opera tone particularly with Dan weren't the strongest aspects, but season 2 is far more good than bad)
4.) Season 4 (I have a lot of complicated feelings about season 4 and mostly find myself frustrated with the first eight episodes but once I get past that, season 4 is overall pretty great. The highs pretty much carry the season and make you forget that the lows are pretty terrible)
5.) Season 6 (Honestly, seasons 5 and 6 are practically equal for me. The reason I lean towards season 6 is that season 5 has more off putting plot points and story lines. Like, the Carrie arc. I also can't tolerate the Lucas/Peyton/Lindsey love triangle with Lucas being desperate to get married regardless of who ends up being the bride. It's exhausting, and nearly ruins Lucas's character. Season 6 at least puts a stop to the Carrie arc five episodes in and has Lucas settle down with Peyton. Otherwise, everything going on is pretty solid aside from the Mouth and Millie garbage. Nathan's comeback, the Brooke/Sam arc, seeing Brooke fall in love again, Quentin's death, Naley in general, the small amount we get of Haley's musical aspirations, etc)
6.) Season 5 (As stated before, season 5 is almost equal to season 6 for me. It does a solid job setting up the adult years and reestablishing the characters and their dynamics. Brooke is at her best in a lot of ways. I loved seeing Brooke and Lucas grow close again. Nathan and Haley come out of their separation and marital problems stronger than ever)
7.) Season 7 (It's not my favorite season, but I think both Haley's depression arc and Nathan being accused of having an affair baby are both strong story lines that center the entire show. Alex is a fun, new character, standing out to me over Clay and Quinn. Everything else is mostly underwhelming)
8.) Season 9 (The final season is pretty much carried by the return of Dan, Nathan's kidnapping, and nothing else. Who asked for Xavier to come back? Who asked for fatphobic writing? As cute as Logan was, Clay didn't need to forget an entire child. At least Chris Keller was there and Haley was allowed to be a badass)
9.) Season 8 (It's mostly a filler season. None of the story lines are great. I wouldn't call this a bad season. Compared to later seasons Riverdale, season 8 of OTH deserved an Emmy. But it's mostly just a lot of fluff and plots that don't actually matter. I can appreciate it only because 22 episode+ seasons are starting to become a rarity, but season 8 is no one's favorite or go-to season)
