Netsuke are miniature sculptures originating in 17th-century Japan. These are just four quirky examples that caught our eye, but you can find nearly 4,000 open images on JSTOR of these beautiful objects.

PS The second image is of Tanuki, a mischievous raccoon dog in Japanese mythology commonly associated with excessive drinking and gluttony. This ivory netsuke depicts Tanuki carrying, um, his grossly enlarged scrotum.

Blue Eye Samurai characters as animals

First of all, let me just reassert my dog Taigen agenda.

Like I keep talking about it but this man really growls and barks like a dog, and yaps and follows Mizu around like a puppy.

I don't know much about dog breeds but my first thought was German Shepherd for Taigen. Typical guard dog you know? Fierce, aggressive, loyal, and very disciplined when trained.

Or maybe he'd be an Akita? Since that's a Japanese dog breed, and they're also large and powerful. They're quite similar to German Shepherds, not only in appearance, but they're also good as guard dogs and hunting dogs, though they're less predictable and not as family-friendly.

Also in Japanese folklore, dogs tend to be seen as auspicious guides and protectors that have the power to resist evil spirits and demons. Dog statues are often placed at city gates to ward off thieves and robbers. Ties back to guard dog behaviour lmao, and brings to mind how the Shogun praised Taigen's loyalty and specifically requested that Taigen be one of the people guarding him at his side.

Okay next, moving on, let's talk about cat Mizu, which I've also talked about before, but okay. Just look at this.

Neko Mizu my beloved.....!!! Scrunkly and scrungy. Graceful predators, introverted and mysterious, but feisty, unassuming little creatures of chaos. WILL scratch you without hesitation.

Also I think she'd specifically be a black cat, because of the prejudice towards black cats as "unlucky." Similar to how Mizu is discriminated against as people believe she's a "monster."

It's also interesting to note that cats have several different forms within Japanese folklore, from the deadly and malevolent nekomata, to shapeshifting bakeneko, to the waving figurine of the maneki-neko placed in shops to bring in prosperity. Some theorise that the diverse range of folklore stories regarding cats is related to how the species is not indigenous to Japan, which is also interesting when you recall that Mizu is mixed race.

I feel that she could honestly be any domestic black cat, but if I had to choose a specific breed, then I think she'd suit a Bombay. Very glossy black coats. Muscular but lean. Very panther-like. Only thing is that Bombays are known for their special copper eyes, but the fact that eye colour is a notable thing about their breed is also a very interesting parallel.

And I know I said in my previous post (linked above) that Ringo is the exhausted but loving caretaker of the two of them, but Ringo has an animal form too! He's a tanuki, also known as Japanese raccoon dogs! In folklore, they're silly little guys, happy and mischievous, a little absent-minded and goofy, but they're shapeshifting masters of disguise.

Also, in canon, Ringo literally lived with a family of tanuki during winter at some point in his life! He talks about this when he meets Mizu in the first episode. Image below is a concept of a deleted scene, courtesy of Brian Kesinger, the show's head of story.

Next, Akemi. Now, I know she has all that bird symbolism going on, but Mizu also had horse symbolism (due to her connection with her horse Kai). So, personality and design-wise, I don't think the symbolism has to necessarily match up. And with that said, I would like to propose another idea: I think Akemi is more like a fox!

Like I'm convinced she is in fact a beautiful kitsune in disguise. Because kitsunes in Japanese folklore are known to shapeshift into beautiful women, and are very elegant, cunning and intelligent, which seems a lot like Akemi to me!

Okay now that that's out of the way, here are some of my favorite animals

Lynx are one of my favorites!!! Big paws and lil tail and absolute apex predators

Pangolin have been some of my favorite animals since I was little!! They're so so cool

Pikas only live at super high altitudes and they're actually a benchmark species for global warming, as we can track their shrinking habitat as they get forced higher and higher into the mountains. They collect flowers and greenery all summer and stash it in their burrows to dry, and then eat it in the winter! Also they're very very loud

Tanuki! Also known as the Japanese raccoon dog! They are not related to raccoons but they ARE canids, and in Japanese folklore they're very common figures, usually as mischievous and jolly spirits, sometimes gullible and absent minded, but talented shapeshifters and givers of great wisdom. They're also really, really cute

And last, but definitely not least, is my dad's dog Scout. He can count to five, understands enough English to argue with my dad about things, and he does a spinning jump move when you say what he wants (like "does scout want to go outside?") We did not teach him to do that, he just started doing it on his own. He's the perfect beast and I love him

Personality: 

Juniper tends to lean into their mystic background a good amount, showing themselves off as mischievous and crafty to those around them. They hold a good amount of confidence, even when it's clear things are not in their favor, only really getting nervous/anxious when others call them out. They seem to quite enjoy the attention otherwise, telling stories of their adventures and being all too willing to demonstrate their magic. They're like a hero, or so they seem to think and try to give off the impression of.

That isn't to say that Juniper doesn't have a calm side- their overly energetic and outgoing persona shows more in public than anything else. Once alone or with those they're comfortable with, the tanuki still holds bits and pieces of their old energy- taking chances to let out a few well practiced lines- but tends to be more relaxed and tired. They're also more likely to quiet down, enjoying time to themselves to write or draw. Though when interacting with others, they'll still joke, tease, and poke around with a faint grin.

They can use their tail like an extra limb, able to grab, throw, swing around, and smack things with it. 

One of the potions in Juniper's belt is really just raspberry mango lemonade they drink to freak people out. 

Not a whole lot is known about Juniper's backstory. How they ended up dimension hopping all over the place, why they're dressed like a mystic dork, how or when they got their powers. 

Their original name was once passed around but this, too, was soon lost to the wind of time and space. It is believed that they have a family though they have yet to run into any. 

Juniper knows a bit more than they let on but refuses to say for one reason or another, their mood dropping for a period of time if pushed about it too often.

With each time they dimension hop, the amount of energy required to do so takes a piece of them with it. A memory, a thought, a name-. It takes something each time without fail.

They don't shapeshift often, despite this bit being a natural ability to all Tanuki. They won't openly admit to the reason being they're afraid of losing sight of their true form.  

They've met all different sorts of people in their time exploring. Humans aren't usually their favorite to interact with but they'll happily do so if approached by a bright eyed individual. 

Trouble finds them more often than not in the form of a giant beast. Shifting form with each dimension, it hunts Juniper whenever possible. No form of this beast is shorter in length than nine feet.

Juniper will write about what they remember about those from their home dimension, their past adventures, and short things regarding themselves. Although they can't place a name to one of the faces they often find themselves drawing one person in particular, a warm feeling following whenever they think of them.

Thus the comparison for our mischievous fluffy two legger is a bit more clear

The English translation team probably chose weasel as a replacement because while it is an animal, it can also mean someone sneaky or deceitful - like Grim

Here's an animal that people may or may not regress to the tanuki or the raccoon dog that's in the same family as dogs foxes wolves etc. they are mischievous jolly and a bit shy but social. they eat fish, berries, fruits, and nuts.

“I’ll be just a moment!” A thick accented voice shouted down the hall, followed by the chattering chorus of animals and insects... Except none of them were properly animals at all. Many of them may look that way, but no, they were yokai. Monsters that had overcome their fiendish, demonic ways, rehabilitated by the doctor who was quickly scribbling down inventory in the back room.

From the doorway, a dark masked face peered. What followed next was a long snout, furry. Then a tubby belly, bulging over a loincloth haphazardly tied to hide... unmentionables. The raccoon-dog-like creature waddled over, gazing up sleepily at the visitor.

It asked the other something in a mish-mash of gibberish and English, before stuffing a piece of banana it had in its loincloth pocket into his mouth. It chewed noisily, lips smacking together.

“I thought we agreed on no snacks before dinner--” The stern voice from before returned, this time with a face to it. Young and slightly hairy, Henrik’s face was a bit gaunt, but his eyes were bright upon seeing the visiting half-demon.

“Oh. Hallo. What can I help you with?” Grunting with effort, he hauled the tanuki on the floor up into his arms. “Please don’t mind Jakki, he’s mischievous, but he only really wants treats.”

Design sheet for my main San'aku

This is the leader of the SAN’AKU Tanuki, he is also the oldest one. His name in Japanese means raccoon dog, which was formerly believed in Japan to be a mischievous animal capable of shapeshifting. As much as this creature can not shape-shift, it is a very mischievous creature that likes creating chaos. Out of all three of the SAN’AKU, Tanuki is the most reckless one of them all and is the one who’s more likely to take joke or pranks too far. I’m really happy with his design, I love how cool and cute he looks and can’t wait to start colouring him in. His design is probably my favourite out of all three of them, I’m not sure why but I just really like how cheeky his character looks and how well it suits him. If you’re wondering why they have arrows or lines on then that is because in order to higher peoples emotions they have to touch that person on their neck leaving a symbol. That symbol then mean they can control that person’s emotions and do whatever they want with it. Tanuki’s symbol are 3 arrows facing downwards, Maru’s symbol are 3 lines and Chiisai’s symbol is 3 arrows facing upwards. They can only control a certain amount of people’s emotions at a time though, so if they want to stop controlling someone’s emotions the just scratch the simple with their claws, feet or teeth, it then disappears.

Sprinting out of bed and down the hall you were met with a strange sight, there was something running on the top shelves of the kitchen. Yoongi was swiping at it with a broom and Taehyung was shouting for him to shoo him outside.

“Hey!” You called loudly and everyone froze even the fluff ball on the top of the cabinets. “Listen, the poor thing is going to have a heart attack, waving a broom around like a mad man is scaring it.”

Yoongi nodded, putting the broom back down letting out a small growl under his breath, “the thing probably has rabies,” Yoongi huffed while sitting on a bar stool with the others.

“Hey there little guy, come down here, I promise none of the boys will hurt you.” The fluff began descending the spice shelf by the sink and landed hesitantly behind the bread. “See, I’m nice. Would you like something to eat?”

You grabbed the blueberries from the fridge and popped a few in your mouth before offering some to the tiny creature. When it didn’t move from behind the bread box you rolled a few towards it, a clawed hand snatched the berry before snatching another and another.

Stopping in hopes the creature would come out searching for more, you had to suppress a giggle when a tiny head popped up from behind the bread box. Two big round eyes surrounded by dark fur as if the mischievous creature was wearing a bandit mask.

“Oh aren’t you beautiful, you want some more my little friend?” you called holding out the blueberries watching as it crawled up your arm and sat like a toddler on your hip. “You are friendly aren’t you. With your cute little ears, we have a raccoon in the house too, his name is Seokjin.”

As if saying some sort of magic word the raccoon dog stretched and grew in your hands until you fell from the sudden and odd distribution of weight. Seokjin was on top of you looking sheepish and scared. “I am sorry, I am so sorry.”

You couldn’t help but freeze up in shock, the others were so confused. You looked at Seokjin who had openly started to sob in your shirt, “I’m sorry.”

“Hey Jin, calm down.” You sat up, lifting his head and wiping his tears on your sleeve. “You don’t have to be sorry.”

“I didn’t tell you cause I was scared everyone who ever adopted me sent me back scared I had diseases and said I was a filthy animal. I tried to be good.” He cried again, his ears folded down and he looked heartbroken.

You hadn’t realized he felt this way, that he had walls around him just like Yoongi because he didn’t let you see that he was scared. He played his part perfectly so you would never know, he never complained and never brought attention to himself. The first to act and help and always agreeing with you.

“Jin, honey, come with me to your room, and let’s have a talk. okay?” you took his hands and his crying grew louder as if he truly thought you could give him back. You squeezed his hands and walked him down the hall, ignoring the whispers from the other five hybrids.

“I’m sorry I never told you I thought I could hide it.” He said and you smiled sitting down beside him on the bed.

“Jin, tell me about it, how it works and everything,” you asked, taking his hand.

“Uh well…The Tanuki or the Neoguri is something called a yokai,” Seokjin tried to find the right words.

“I am familiar with Yokai.”

In the year 720 stories began circling about the Tanuki, they were recorded to be tricksters who liked to make fun of humans and could change their appearance.

The Tanuki would turn into humans and go into the town drinking and at the end of the night after they had paid their bill and left the money would turn to leaves.

The Tanuki had one rival and that was the Kitsune or Gumiho. They were not rivals at first the two were quite happy beside one another, but the Tanuki played a trick that cost the kitsune its life.

It started a war and the two became sworn enemies.

“My family lived in the wild. They told me the stories but one day I was taken.” Seokjin said, struggling to remember the events from his childhood, “My attempts at disguise weren’t the best, unable to hide my ears and tail. This meant I easily passed for a hybrid and saved my life.”

“I have been in adoption centers many times as my owners find out and send me back.” He sighed, “I understand that you won’t want me that’s okay,”

“Jin,” you sighed, exasperated by his lack of faith in you, his readiness to give up, “Kim Seokjin look at me.”

He turned his shiny round eyes landed on you, you were taken back by his handsome features but pressed on anyway. “Can you show me how you transform?”

“I-I can try?” He admitted his ears tipped red he hadn’t been asked to do that before. Seokjin stood up and began changing slowly his body shrank and you felt an odd sensation, your body feeling like it was floating for a moment.

Seokjin as a small raccoon dog clambered back onto the bed and sat beside you turning back into himself. “It doesn’t scare you or make you feel sick?”

“No, it kind of makes me feel better, Jin I have a secret very similar to yours, I can’t say much now but I won’t abandon you. Trust me and I hope you can accept me when the time comes.” You blushed

He hugged you pressing his nose into your neck nuzzling and scenting the area happily. “I will accept you. I think I have an idea but I will wait for you to explain.”

There was something about Seokjin revealing his identity and abilities that eased your mind, you thought perhaps between him and Felix you would learn how to control your change as well.

Perhaps this wasn’t going to be so bad after all, and if the boys could accept Jin then you were sure they would accept you.

It warmed your heart that finally, Jin seemed honest, that he wasn’t guarding his emotions. You were always too distracted by someone or something else in the house to ever notice or have the time to address Seokjin.

But now that he had opened up you took the chance to hear his thoughts and feelings. “Tell me what you think of living here, do you like it?”

“It is hard to put into words, I like having little brothers and people to talk to and freedom and my own room and…” he blushed looking away “I like you.”

“Oh thank you,” your face felt like it was burning. “I am glad you like it here and everyone, would you change anything if you could?”

“Um… I would love to make more food. I like cooking with you and Yoongi. I want to try more things.” He said “I would like it if we could spend more time together, I like when we play games and chat”

“Alright, I think we can do that.” You breathed standing and looking over your shoulder. “Oh and Jin?”

“Mm..” he looked up nervously.

“I like you too, I am glad out of all the hybrids I found you, you complete our little family.” You swore you saw his eyes well up and as you opened the door you saw Yoongi standing there fidgeting with his fingers.

Today I learned there is an animal native to Japan called a tanuki also known as a “raccoon dog” but isn’t related to raccoons at all

In Japanese folklore tanuki were known as mischievous shapeshifters and could even transform into statues. They are also often depicted as having huge inflatable balls.....

which would have been really helpful background information before I watched the Studio Ghibli movie Pom Poko last year. You can imagine my confusion as to why these raccoons were bouncing around on giant ballsacs and using them as weapons of war

Anyway...

that’s why Mario has a flying “tanooki” suit.... and it could apparently turn into a statue WHICH I NEVER KNEW? How did I know every secret to that game but didn’t know that??

and Tom Nook and the Nooklings are tanuki... it’s literally in the name “Tom nook” “tanuki” goddamnit!!!! And in folklore tanuki could disguise leaves to look like money which I’m sure is related to why the furniture is all leaves in animal crossing

I mean raccoons are native to north america so it makes sense that anything created in japan involving raccoon-looking creatures would be tanuki but we all just assumed they were raccoons? This whole time? Imagine making a story about raccoons but a country with tons of influence was like “this is obviously a totally different animal” and all the folkloric significance is lost
