Another book round up! I don't have a good reason why I was not posting about these books as I was reading them, other than I was just feeling too lazy to do a full write up. And I know how much you all miss my long-ass rambles about books no one cares about.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: 4.5/5⭐️

This is another book club read, and probably my favorite thing my book club has made me read this year. I have been putting off reading anything by Novik for years, and I sorely regret it now. From the first sentence (which is one of the best openers I've read for a book in a long time), I was hooked. Ensnared. Besotted. I stayed up until 2am one night just burning through the pages. This made me feel like I was thirteen again, sprinting through a book I randomly found at the library.

My favorite parts of Uprooted is the way it takes a story I would have read as a kid and updates it for adults. It's dark and mature in ways that feel grown, all without losing its sense my whimsy. I only have two complaints.

The first: I wish we spent more time playing around with the "maiden in the dragon's lair" trope. It's the obvious place the story sprung from, and I just think we abandoned it for court politics way too soon. And second: once you get to the court politics, the pacing slows significantly, and I had a hard time pushing through the last 200 pages.

Really happy I read this. I'm definitely going to read more Novik again.

Fangirl, Vol 1: The Manga Adapted by Sam Maggs and Illustrated by Gabi Nam; Based on the novel by Rainbow Rowell

Genre: Coming of age, romance

Normally, I would not count any comic I read (like three volumes of Mao by Rumiko Takahashi I devoured a few weeks back), but I'm making an exception. I would have reread the original Fangirl if I didn't conveniently have this from the library when I needed the emotional comfort last week.

Fangirl is one of my favorite books. It is in my opinion the perfect example of a YA coming of age story. I know Rowell is controversial, but she has a really good way of writing character drama. This book is marketed as being a manifesto to fandom, but frankly, the fanfiction stuff is the least impactful part of the story.

I like reading about Cather struggling to grow up. I love the drama between her and her sister, and her messy home situation. The romance is also really sweet, and it plays out wonderfully. I read it multiple times now, and it still makes me melt. I read Fangirl at this moment in my life where I just needed to read about someone struggling to make that transition into adulthood, and it hits perfectly.

The adaptation to manga really works. Unlike some other novel to comic adaptations I've read, this one does a really good job at cutting out the narration to let the art do the storytelling. And styling it as a manga is such a good choice. If there were more volumes available at my library, I would read them right away.

Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation by Kristin Kobes Du Mez

Genre: non-fiction, politics

Rating: 4/5 ⭐

I mentioned before that I am in the research stages of an original novel that involves my reading a lot about the far right. I've been eyeing this book as a part of that research for a long time now, and I finally got off my butt long enough to actually read it.

As a source on misogyny and violent patriarchy in white evangelical religion, it does a great job. I took a lot of notes, and Du Mez does a great job at exploring how the patriarchy and religion interplay with each other. However, this book is marketed as explaining how that bled into politics and explains how Trump 1.0 happened, and that's where it felt a little weaker. Not bad, but it's clear that Du Mez specializes in the intersection of gender and religion, as opposed to political policy.

As a personal preference, I wish Du Mez included more long excerpts of the speeches, books, and manifestos she discussed. Everything is properly cited, but she often summarizes them in her own words, and I would have loved to have looked at more specific quotes.

would like to make a note for mac users: if you can help it do not use avira. it's owned by the same parent company as avast (and avg. both are notorious for shit business ethics, shit customer privacy protection, and shit bloatware). gen digital is good at taking your money and bad at protecting you and it is on purpose lmao. please use malwarebytes it works on mac just fine. if you're broke like me and are fairly tech savvy (or willing to experience a learning curve) use clamAV

Things that will make your computer meaningfully faster:

Replacing a HDD with an SSD

Adding RAM

Graphics cards if you're nasty

Uninstalling resource hogs like Norton or McAfee (if you're using Windows then the built-in Windows Security is perfectly fine; if you're using a mac consider bitdefender as a free antivirus or eset as a less resource intensive paid option)

Customizing what runs on startup for your computer

Things that are likely to make internet browsing specifically meaningfully faster:

Installing firefox and setting it up with ublock origin

adding the Auto Tab Discard extension to firefox to sleep unused tabs so that they aren't constantly reloading

Closing some fucking tabs bud I'm sorry I know it hurts I'm guilty of this too

Things that will make your computer faster if you are actually having a problem:

Running malwarebytes and shutting down any malicious programs it finds.

Correcting disk utilization errors

Things that will make your computer superficially faster and may slightly improve your user experience temporarily:

Clearing cache and cookies on your browser

Restarting the computer

Changing your screen resolution

Uninstalling unused browser extensions

Things that do not actually make your computer faster:

Deleting files

Registry cleaners

Defragging your drive

Passively wishing that your computer was faster instead of actually just adding more fucking RAM.

Was talking to someone recently about scars & I realized something

(under the cut because I know some people are uncomfortable with lists on injuries)

THINGS I DON'T HAVE SCARS FROM¹:

dropping a hot soldering iron tip down on my knuckle in middle school shop class

touching the corner of a fresh-out-of-the-oven cookie sheet to my inner arm (bc the oven mitts I was using were shorter than what I was used to) in high school

falling off the jetty & opening up the side of my thumb/wrist & my outer thigh on the jagged rocks at the beach while home from college

Cutting the pad of my finger open with scissors this past June

THINGS I *DO* HAVE SCARS FROM:

skinned my elbow going down a slide in elementary school

sunburned my knee on summer break in highschool

chapped lip a few years ago

Just... wtf body?!

I have an entire rant/vent post in my head because I REALLY want to vent about how godawful it is attempting to do *something good* for the elections of my country... only to be sabotaged by the same institution that is SUPPOSEDLY autonomous from the government in turn (and it WAS autonomous! for the last 30 FUCKING years smh, but now it is infested with the government's parasites and I have heard AWFUL stories about the whole ongoing thing).

The one from 2018 was somewaht easy-peasy... this is straight HARD MODE (i really don't want to live the sequel of a pretty bad govenrment... but worse, you get me?)

But also, it's much more easier to do think and write it in Spanish... but also, I really don't feel like dropping everything out in the front, as well.

The whole thing is. However.

I feel betrayed. I went through a little more of a month stressed for stuff that I shouldn't have been stressed in the first place. My body is PAYING for it (I got sick on Wednesday and the less about my tmi situation, the better)... and the thing is FINALLY done in less of 24 hours. I really want to step back... but if I don't do this...?

All I know is that this will be the last time I offer my help to do this. Not under the parasites that are on board and making EVERYTHING of it a disaster.

But I'm very afraid. I'm scared. I don't know how I will survive tomorrow. All I want to do tomorrow, after everything is said and done, is get home, maybe read this week's Undelu, maybe watch something to distract me, and then bed. And then start organizing to see if I don't have smth serious, as it has been eating me for a while.
