However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society.Based on the best-selling supernatural horror manga by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. Although the samurai saves the helpless pair from their pursuers, he feels that there is no need to help them further; but when offered a gem in exchange for his services as a bodyguard, he reluctantly accepts Kotarou's offer of employment—just until Tobimaru is healed and the two reach their destination. この世はブランデー初心者に厳しいし、Googleはガチのブログ・メディアに厳しい

かつてはハイボールブーム、モヒートブーム、朝ドラ「マッサ��」によるジャパニーズウイスキーブームがありましたが、最近ではクラフトジンブームが到来しており、バー界隈でも「おいおいついにスピリッツの売上まで伸ばしにかかってきたかサントリーとかニッカ（および広告代理店）すげぇな」と話題になっています。

しかし、私が大好きな薬草酒（シャルトリューズ）、ブランデー、ウオツカに関してはまったくの無風で、それはまぁ無駄に高騰しないとかメリットもあるんですけど寂しくもあり。

やっぱりブランデーやウオツカだと、まったくの素人が飛び込むにはハードルが高すぎるんですよね。教えてくれる人も周囲にいない（バーに飛び込んでも、平凡なバーテンダーだとそこまで詳しくない）でしょうし、調べようとしてもなかなか良い記事がない。

インタネッツのサイトでは「ブランデーダディ」さんという良サイトがあるのですが、他にはめぼしいところがありません。

まず、私としてもブランデー関連で検索したときの1位表示はブランデーダディさんに譲りたいというか、あのサイトがトップに来るべきだと思っています

Googleさんにも限界があるのでそういう理想論でゴリ押ししたくはないのですが、最終的には「Googleで上位にある記事を適当に読んでそこらのブランデーを味もわからないまま適当に飲んでSNSでおしゃれな自分アピールして満足する輩は別にそれで幸せなんだからほっとけばよくて、割とストイックに美味しい酒を飲みたいと探求する人と、そんな人に有益な情報を与えられる記事と、その記事に少しでもたどり着きやすくなる導線が増えればいいよね」というところに行き着きます。

医療とかだとそれでいいとはいえないんですけど嗜好品ならまぁ。

まぁブランデーダディさんも普通に他のサイトのテキストコピペとかしてる記事あるのでそれはどうなんだみたいな話はあるんですけど、クソ記事を量産してるキュレーションメディアやプロブロガーのうっすいおすすめ記事とかに比べたらブランデーに対する愛を感じるので全然。

味の違いを知るための飲み方───入門としてまず飲むべき銘柄3＋1つ

もし初心者の中でも「ブランデーとか飲んだことないわ」ってレベルの場合、まず有名どころかつ特徴がハッキリしている

ヘネシー VSOP フィーヌ シャンパーニュ（XO 飲めるなら尚良し）、もしくはフラパン VIP XO

ポールジロー 25年（→機会があればぜひ35年も）

カミュ XO（試すという意味ではエレガンスでもボルドリでもよさげ）

を試してほしいです。美味しい銘柄は他にありますが、上から順番に「甘い・華やか系」「自然派・穏やか系」「塩気・旨味系」です。

このへんを試してブランデーの味の違いの方向性をなんとなく察したら、次にまとまっているバランス系の銘柄を。美味いのを選ぶとしたら「レイモンラニョー」なのですが、味の傾向を知るという目的であればまずは置いてある店が多い「レミーマルタン」「クルボアジェ」あたりですかね。盲点ですが4本目としては「オタール」とかも悪くはない気が。

飲み方はもちろんストレートです。

ウイスキーは加水することで香りが花開いたりしますが、ブランデーは常温でそのまま飲むものです。冷やしたり水で薄めるものではないため、ロックは相性最悪です。 （だから飲む人増えないんですけどね、フランスらしいこのめんどくささ）

また、「VSOP」「XO」とか変なアルファベットがついてるとこで最初は混乱しがちですが、これは熟成レベル（高級度）を表します。ウイスキーでは「ノンエイジ」「12年」「18年」とかシンプルで、モルトに近いポールジローだけは割とこういう年数表記がポピュラーなんですが、フランスの酒なのでここはオサレな言い方をしておきましょう。

VS（安物）＜VSOP（ちょっと贅沢）＜XO（贅沢品）

みたいな感じ。V は「VERY」で X は「EXTRA」で、もちろん EXTRA のほうが格上。中間にもはやアルファベットではない「ナポレオン」があったり、最上位クラスに「オルダージュ」「フロリレージュ」など（かなり贅沢品）があったりややこしいですが、そこもまたフランスの酒なので以下同文。

あと「コニャック＝コニャック地方のブランデー。上品」「アルマニャック＝アルマニャック地方のブランデー。パワフル」「カルヴァドス＝ぶどうではなくりんごを原料にしたブランデー。甘口」というのも一行で紹介しておきますが今回はあまり関係ない話です。

各銘柄について簡単に紹介しますと

ヘネシー

日本人から見たら最もマーケティングに力が入っている有名ブランド。広告費もデザイン費もバンバン使うし添加物・着色料なんかもバンバン使う、とにかくフランスの誇りとしての「甘美で華やかなお酒」を体現しているブランド。個人的には好きです。

VSOP（フィーヌ・シャンパーニュです。プリビレッジのほうは全く別物なので注意）以上なら味は確かにいいんですが、高すぎる上に年々高騰しているのが最大のネック。VSOP が10,000円とかいう狂気の沙汰なのはヘネシーだけ。

モルトでいうならジャパニーズやマッカランみたいなポジション。高騰してるおかげで最近飲んでないんでマッカランみたいに味が落ちてたら教えてください。

フラパン

香水や珈琲も作ってたりする華やか系ブランド。XO のボトルは超かっこいい。

日本でブランデーが不人気＆ヘネシーがマーケティング頑張りまくってるせいで不遇な感じがある。ヘネシーよりコスパは良い。今後はヘタしたらヘネシー VSOP とフラパン XO が同価格になりかねないので、それならどう考えてもフラパン飲むわって感じ。ただ置いてある店少ないんだよなぁ。

ポールジロー

コニャック語る上で知らなきゃモグリな自然派 No.1 ブランド。添加物とか一切使わずに純粋に素材の味と製造の腕で勝負してるだけあってとにかく美味い。シングルモルト（特にスペイサイド）が好きな人はすんなり入りやすい。

ただ、華という点では物足りないので、ブランデーならではという感じに欠けるのがネック。正直、ポールジロー35年飲むならモルトでいいんじゃないか説がある。ただ私のように「アイラ系は好きになれんけど、スペイサイド飲んでるくらいならブランデーいくわ」とモルト沼を抜けた人もいるように、このあたりがツボだといろいろ難しい気がする。

カミュ

特に VSOP だと塩気があってドライな味わい。シャープな仕上げにしたいときのカクテルベースとしても優秀だったりする。ちょっとクセのあるブランデーの入門としてはお店でも体験しやすい。XOだと当然熟成年数が長い分まろやかになるわけですが、どっしり華やか系統のコニャックに比べればクセは感じるはず。

ブランデーって感じがしないわけではないがちょっと独特です。モルトでいうスプリングバンク的な立ち位置。でもエドラダワーほどイロモノではない。ワインではシャブリ好きって方とかなら割と相性いいんじゃないか感がある。

レイモンラニョー

ポールジローと同様、自然派な製法にこだわっている。味わいはジローちゃんより華があり、味・香り・後味のバランスがとても良い。レモンハートのマスターなら「シャイな味わい」と評するんじゃないかってことで、モルトでいえばグレンリベット。

ただ日本では無名。バーでは「レミーマルタン」に、“バックバーの奥から出してくるボトル”としても「マーテル　コルドンブルー」とかにポジションを奪われている感がある。コルドンブルーはもうちょいどっしりしてて甘味もあるので、もうちょい「わかりやすい」んですよね。んでヘネシーほど鼻につく感じではなく。

個人的に特に美味いと思うおすすめ銘柄───他の酒ならよく飲む人、初心者～中級者向け

おすすめのブランデーといっても「誰に」によってまぁ変わってくるので、属性にわけて紹介していきます。

まぁブランデーに手を出す人っていきなりブランデーにいくというよりはモルトやワイン、和酒をある程度飲んでいる感じだと思うので、他の酒からの浮気を想定したほうがいいのかなと。

甘い、華やかなのが好きな人

前述のフラパン XO。飲み干した後味、フィニッシュも長く、優雅な余韻が残ります。

あとは甘さ特化ではないけど、上でもちらっとふれた「マーテル　コルドンブルー」とかですかねぇ。置いてる店多い印象あるし、ハズレだと感じる人は少ない気がするし、なんやかんやで偉大。モルトでいうシーバス感がある（日本人の好みに合う的な）。

個人的には、甘いのを突き詰めていくとカルヴァドス（一応ブランデーですが、ぶどうではなくりんごを原料にしているやつ）にいくのもありかなと思います。シャトー・ド・ブルイユとかデュポンとかは、フルーティーかつリキュールとか果実酒より度数しっかりしてるから甘ったるくなくて美味しい。

モルト好きなら

無難とはいえやっぱりポールジローの35年になるんだろうなぁと。

25年（エクストラ・ヴィユー）まではフルーティなのでモルト好きにはむしろ合わない気がしますが、35年（トレラール）、50年（ヘリテージ）になると枯れた風味も出てくるのでモルト好きの舌には合うはず。

あとはモルトでいうボトラーズものみたいな感じで、ポールジロー最古のビンテージをブレンドした「キュベ・トレゾール・ド・パラディ」とかもいってみるとハマるかも。以前飲みましたが、とても上品な熟成感が印象に残っています。華やかではなく、ただひたすら「静か」で、そういう静けさが心地よい…と感じるタイプの方なら合うはず。なお私は合いませんでした（シャルトリューズとか好きなので…）。

日本酒とかベルギービールが好きな人向け

たぶん好みが分かれるタイプのブランデーなのですが、「ドゥピュイ 1971年」は個人的にはおすすめ。

カミュの塩気を強化したような印象もあり、長期熟成でさっぱりしつつフレッシュさすらある至極品。テセロン LOT53（割と高級品）の後に飲んだのですが、完全に喰ってました。

カミュ VSOP とかだとスパイシーさ＆ドライさを楽しむ・カクテルで利用するみたいになってますが、これはまるで新鮮な魚介類のような「旨味」をしっかり感じられます。香りよりは味わい特化型。

また、ヘネシーやフラパンのような後味がしっかり華やかに残るという感じとは対照的に、こちらは長期熟成品とは思えないほどすっきりしたフィニッシュ。軽快に飲み干せます（もったいないけど）。

個人的に一番好きなので紹介するけど、ワイン好きとかには良さそう

圧倒的な存在感、「ラニョーサボラン　フロリレージュ」。

高級ワインならともかく、ウイスキーやクラフトジン飲んで「香りが華やかなんだよね～」とか言ってしまうようになった昨今の風潮に違和感を覚える方はぜひ。「華やかってのはこういうことなんだよ」と言わんばかりの、本場・フランスの本気を味わえます。

2万クラスのボトルとしては味はそこまで芸術的ではないんですが、香りだけで値段の価値はある。前述の「ドゥピュイ 1971」とは対照的です。

シャルトリューズが「飲む香水」と呼ばれますが、シャルトリューズ大好き人間からしてもその異名はこの酒のほうが似合う。

特段「こういう系統のが飲みたい」という指定がないとき

前述の「レイモンラニョー」という銘柄。もっと評価されるべきだと思っている。

とにかくハイレベルでまとまっているなぁと。フィニッシュが長い割にはくどさ、枯れっぷりがないやさしい世界なので飽きずに飲めると思います。

できればオルダージュ（ボトルを自分で買うと2万弱）が良いと思いますが、予算抑えて試すならエクストラヴィユー（1万弱）。

次点でポールジローの25年ですかね。個人的には35より好きです。コスパもよし。

ジンやウオツカが好きな人はぜひ

冷凍して飲む無色透明なホワイトブランデー「ゴデ・アンタークティカ」。

フランスの頭おかしい（褒め言葉）ところがいかんなく発揮された一品。さすがジンもウオツカもぶどうで作ってしまう（ジーヴァインとシロック、大好きなんですけども）国だ。

熟成���くて荒々しさというか鼻につく感じが強く、「ぶどうの風味がする華やかなスピリッツ」としても「ジーヴァイン・フロレゾン」のほうが飲みやすい上に安いので、ぶっちゃけコスパはそんなよくない。ただ、たぶんこれ売れないし、スピリッツ党なら生産中止・輸入停止になる前に一度飲んでおいてほしい。でもたぶんシルヴァラードみたいにはなれないんだろうなぁ。

50mlのミニチュアボトルでさえ1,000円くらいして「マッカランかよ」って感じなんですが、東京駅の「LIQUIRS HASEGAWA」に売ってるのでバーで新しいウイスキーを試すく��いの感覚で試せます。

「たけーよ、そんなにアフィで儲けたいか」と思った人へ

私は割とウイスキーなど他の酒もいろいろ飲んできた人間なのですが、ブランデーはやっぱり高級品です。

ウイスキーだとたとえばグレンリベット18年、ベイゼルヘイデンなんかはコスパめっちゃいいと思っているのですが、ボトル5,000円前後の価格帯のブランデーでああいうレベルのはありません。

「美味いブランデー」に出逢いたい場合、ボトルで購入するなら10,000円以上、東京のバーで飲むならシングル1,800円以上出さないと魅力や違いがわかりづらく、安物買いの銭失いになりがちです。 要は VSOP ではなく XO 以上を飲みましょうと。

フランスの酒が No.1 だと思っている私などはよく「フランスの酒は高いんだよね～」と言われます。ワインにしても「ニューワールドのワインは既にフランスを超えている」という意見に反対はしません。

ただ、フランスの酒は、味、香り、ボトルのデザイン、品質の安定性などトータルで評価すべきだと思っています。

フラパンやゴデ・アンタークティカなんかはインテリアとしても優秀ですし、今のところヘネシー以外はウイスキー（主にジャパニーズとマッカラン、古くはバーボン）などのように熟成の浅い安物を大量に売り出して信用を落とす気配がありません。

日本や米国の大手メーカー、ニューワールドのワイナリーにはその信頼はありません。私はそういう「フランスへの信頼」の元にお金を使っています。

どこで飲めばいいのか───外食しても珍しいブランデーを飲める店がそもそも少ない問題

経験上、通常のバーにあるのはカクテル用のボトル＋αくらいです。カジュアルなバー（カフェ・ダイニング寄り）だと微妙なやつを使ってる可能性もありますが、オーセンティックなバーであればレミーマルタン、クルボアジェ、カミュなどの VSOP クラスは使われていると思います。このへんをそのまま飲ませてもらうのは一つの手段です。

さらに、それなりの価格帯のオーセンティックなバーだと、バーテンダーおすすめの XO クラスが多少あるはずなので、こだわりを聞きながら試すことはできます。シングル価格はだいたい 1,800～3,000 円ほどしますが…。

とはいってもブランデーをずらりと揃えた店というのはなかなか見ません。オーセンティックなバーといえばバックバーにずらりと並んだレアボトル…という光景がイメージされますが、だいたいの場合はウイスキーです。

バーテンダーさんに聞くとだいたい「ウイスキーは好きな人が多いから珍しいボトルを置いとけば反応もされるし、こちらからおすすめするチャンスも多いけどね～、ブランデーは出ないですよね～」などと言われます。なので結局ボトルを自分で買うしかなかったりするのがつらいところ。

ただ、中級者以上の方は確実に一度訪れるべきなのが、「原価BAR」の銀座店（原価バー GINZA）。とんでもないです。これは PR 記事ではないのでほどほどにしておきますが、とんでもなくおすすめです。

入場料 2,500 円を払えば、20～30年もののウイスキーや XO 以上のクラスのブランデーが 1,000 円ちょいで飲めます。銀座でコレはヤバい。語彙力がなくなるレベルでヤバみある。

ウイスキーもなかなかの品揃えなのですが、ブランデーの品揃えがここまで良い店は珍しいです。メニューリストもヘネシーやカミュ、クルボアジェなどを書かずに「ラニョーサボラン」「レイモンラニョー」「テセロン」「デラマン」などが名を連ねています。ジャンフィユートレヴィユー XO が安物みたいに上のほうに載ってます（価格順なので）。

あと東京駅ナカにある「LIQUIRS HASEGAWA」も破格の値段で高級ボトルを「試飲」させていただけるという聖地なのですが、ここが注目されまくって民度低い客（買う気ないのに試飲だけして帰る）が押し寄せるようになることだけは絶対に避けたい、マジでそれだけは避けたいってレベルなので酒飲みだけの秘密にしておきましょうね。

「ブランデー飲んでる自分かっけー」で入ること自体はアリだけど、たぶん長続きしないし、マウンティングできる相手も少ないのであまりおすすめできない

という余談。

ウイスキーに詳しいと会社の上司たちから「話のわかるヤツ」として可愛がられるとかのメリットが、クラフトビールに詳しいと「良い店を知っている」ということでモテる・デートに誘いやすくなるというメリットがあります、みたいな体験談を聞いてみたいんですけど実際どうなんすかね。

しかしブランデーやウオツカにそんなメリットはまずありません。バーテンダーさんやバーに通ってる手練の紳士に「僕ブランデー好きなんですよ～」と言ったところで「いやぁブランデーはそんなわからんなぁﾊｯﾊｯﾊｯ」と苦笑されて会話が途絶えます。

女の子に「良いブランデー置いてる店あるんだよね」と言ったところで「ブランデー？　サングリアみたいな感じ？　ていうかマニアックすぎてインスタで伸びづらくない？」みたいな反応が返ってくるので口説き文句にはなりえません、という言葉に出典が欲しいので体験談求む。

飲ませようと思ってもなにせ度数が40度。強いお酒飲み慣れてない人だと、40度あると「甘い」よりも「強い」がくるんですよね。「ｸﾞﾌｯ」ってなってしまう。

しいていえば昨今マーケティングをがんばってる「ヘネシー VS」「クルボアジェ ルージュ」などの安いブランデーをソーダやトニック、果実ジュースで割って楽しく会話しながら飲むというファッショナブルな嗜み方はありますが、正直そんな美味しくないし、コスパも良くないっす。普通にクラフトビールとかの店にいったほうが。銀座にも IBREW とかありますし。

あと、これはウイスキーとかカクテルも同様なのですが、ヘネシー VS やサントリー XO などを適当に割って飲んでるくらいで「俺、ブランデー結構詳しいんだよね～」みたいな感じでドヤってると、いつか恥かかされます。少なくとも私が出逢ったらやんわりとどうにかしたい。

Cancro da próstata e cálcio: qual é a relação?

Quando os doentes recorrem às consultas de Nutrição Oncológica, é comum terem dúvidas acerca da possível relação entre cancro da próstata e cálcio. Assim, é importante proceder-se a um esclarecimento baseado na evidência científica atual.

Cancro da próstata e cálcio: o que é e para que serve o cálcio?

O cálcio é o mineral que existe em maior quantidade no organismo, sendo armazenado, principalmente, no tecido ósseo.

Para além da função estrutural nos ossos, o cálcio atua na transmissão de impulsos nervosos, na coagulação sanguínea, na vasoconstrição e na vasodilatação, na contração e relaxamento dos músculos, na libertação de hormonas, na sinalização intracelular e na manutenção do ritmo cardíaco. Contribui também para o normal metabolismo energético, para um correto funcionamento das enzimas necessárias à digestão e para os processos de divisão e especialização celular.

Os alimentos e os suplementos alimentares são as principais fontes de cálcio. De entre os primeiros, destacam-se o leite e os seus derivados, como o queijo e o iogurte, e alguns vegetais, como a couve e os bróculos. O cálcio pode ser encontrado noutros alimentos, aos quais foi adicionado pela indústria alimentar (cereais, bebidas, entre outros).

Cancro da próstata e cálcio: o que nos diz a ciência?

Para se investigar a relação entre cancro da próstata e cálcio, foram desenvolvidos estudos pré-clínicos, em células de cancro da próstata e em modelos animais, e estudos em humanos.

Cancro da próstata e cálcio: Estudos in vitro

Quando consideradas apenas células, o leite de vaca pode estimular o crescimento de células de cancro da próstata, não parecendo esse crescimento ser afetado pela bebida de soja. Já no caso da bebida de amêndoa, pode inibir o desenvolvimento das células cancerígenas.

Cancro da próstata e cálcio: Estudos in vivo

É imprescindível estudar o efeito num organismo e não apenas considerar células isoladas. Deste modo, foram desenvolvidos trabalhos em roedores. Um desses estudos concluiu que o tamanho do tumor e a progressão da doença foi similar entre os animais que consumiram doses baixas de cálcio e aqueles que consumiram doses elevadas do mineral.

Outro trabalho usando roedores estudou o impacto da vitamina D e do cálcio. Os animais que receberam a dieta normal em cálcio e pobre em vitamina D apresentaram tumores maiores que os roedores submetidos a uma alimentação rica em cálcio e vitamina D.

Cancro da próstata e cálcio: Estudos em humanos

Vários foram os trabalhos epidemiológicos realizados que pretendiam avaliar a influência do consumo de cálcio, de laticínios ou ambos no risco de desenvolvimento de cancro da próstata. Os resultados são bastante diversos: risco aumentado, fraca relação, sem qualquer relação e risco diminuído. Estas diferenças prendem-se com as metodologias usadas, com as limitações das mesmas e com a competição com outros fatores de risco presentes que não foram considerados. Contudo, de um modo geral, estes estudos observacionais sugerem que uma ingestão elevada de cálcio pode estar associada a um risco aumentado de cancro da próstata e a uma forma mais agressiva da doença, comparativamente a uma baixa ingestão.

No que diz respeito ao risco de recorrência da doença após cirurgia, parece estar aumentado tanto em homens com ingestão elevada como com baixa ingestão de cálcio. Num ensaio clínico randomizado (estudo de intervenção), foram considerados dois grupos: grupo de homens a quem foi dado cálcio, durante 4 anos; grupo a quem não foi dado qualquer suplemento de cálcio. Ambos foram seguidos durante 12 anos, tendo os investigadores verificado que, nos primeiros 6 anos, existiram poucos casos de cancro da próstata em ambos os grupos e que, ao fim de 10 anos, não havia diferença entre o número de casos de doença entre os dois.

Vários são, também, os estudos de revisão efetuados, não havendo consenso entre eles. Assim, uns mostram existir aumento do risco de cancro da próstata com o consumo de cálcio e de laticínios, outros mostram não haver qualquer relação. O cálcio oriundo de fontes vegetais, parece não estar relacionado com esse risco.

First Drive: 2018 GMC Terrain

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — When Chevrolet announced that the company would be replacing the aging Equinox crossover, we knew that an all-new version of the second-generation Equinox’s Theta platform-based twin, the GMC Terrain, wouldn’t be too far behind. And after sampling the new 2018 Terrain on the winding, tree-lined Pennsylvanian back roads near Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Fallingwater home, we’re sure that this GMC has the capability and ruggedness crossover shoppers are looking for.

On the outside, it’s a handsome and rugged-looking 4×4. The front fascia is unique across the crossover lineup and gives the Terrain a very sharp and aggressive front end. Unlike many of the other offerings, which are toned down and feminine, the Terrain—and GMC’s new Like a Pro ad campaign—aims to appeal to a demographic looking for more masculine styling. The LED headlights and taillights both offer severe angles, which complete the car’s new design.

New 17-inch wheels are standard, as are active aero shutters in the Terrain’s grille, which help improve fuel economy to its EPA-rated 26 mpg city/30 mpg highway for the standard 1.5-liter turbo-four, which puts out 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. There are three turbocharged engines available in all, the other two being a 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder that makes 252 hp and 260 lb-ft and an all-new 1.6-liter turbodiesel four good for 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. All three work superbly in the Terrain, easily carting around its sub-4,000-lb mass—although, if we were spending our own money, we’d likely choose the higher-output 2.0-liter as it offers a more responsive character than the rest of the group.

Inside, GMC paid extra attention to what the driver touches and interacts with. Occupants are treated to soft hewn leather, supremely cushiony seats, the newest version of GM’s infotainment system (which comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and interior space for days. One new addition that’s unlike its Equinox kin, however, is the Terrain’s new push-pull gear selection system.

Whereas FCA has experimented with a rotary dial and Ford has gone with a center-mounted push-button setup on Lincolns, GMC’s new setup is by far the easiest to use. In a line on the dash, right below the HVAC controls, there are buttons for Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Low, with all nine of the crossover’s gears selectable. Both Reverse and Drive are push-pull buttons that are a snap to use. Even when making a three-point turn, the buttons are easily reached, and the transmission never jerks or stutters, as other transmissions with electronic shifters are wont to do.

While ample, space in the Terrain, however, isn’t always ideal. While the panoramic sliding glass roof makes the Terrain feel open and breezy, the position of the front seat, and its lack of maneuverability, make it feel slightly cramped. The seats themselves sit far too high and the vertically gifted will be unable to achieve a good distance between themselves, the dash, and the steering wheel. We ended up with the seat far too rearwards, the steering wheel as high as it could go, and our arms stretched. It wasn’t as bad for our shorter driving partner, but he too had spacing issues.

In the rear of the Terrain, things are a little different. Rear legroom is quite good, as is headroom, thanks to the indent of the panoramic glass roof. Where the Terrain truly shines, though, is storage space. With the rear seats up, there’s 29.6 cubic feet of space, or about the same as Mazda’s CX-5. Seats down, the Terrain offers 63.3 cubic feet— nearly four more space than the Mazda. And unlike the CX-5, the Terrain’s front passenger seat can be folded completely flat, increasing that space to over 81.0 cubic feet—22 cubic feet more than its Japanese crossover competitor. However, it’s not quite as spacious as the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V, which offer 73.4 cubic feet and 75.8 cubic feet behind the second row, respectively, though like the Mazda, neither boasts the flat-folding front seat.

Unfortunately, the driving characteristics aren’t as good as the competition mentioned above. Winding through the emerald-green forests of the Pennsylvanian mountains, there’s a supreme lack of connection between the steering wheel and what the wheels are doing, along with an unhealthy amount of play. As we zigged and zagged through the countryside, we became less confident in the system and soon slowed our velocity. It’s not expected to be a Corvette or Camaro, but a more in-tune connection to the road would be preferable.

The new 2018 GMC Terrain can be had with a base price of $25,970. However, according to GMC, the average retail price of a new Terrain is around $45,000. The Denali model we used to travel Pennsylvania’s gorgeous jade forests and sparkling blue waterways was closer to $50,000, which is a lot to ask for something that’s a mildly more luxurious Equinox.

While peeling away the Terrain’s skin will reveal the same bones, dash layout, and drivetrains as the frugal and family-oriented Chevy Equinox, the second-generation GMC seems to have transcended those economical roots. It’s better looking, both inside and out, and far plusher than its skeleton implies. The Equinox is already a damn fine people hauler, but by giving it a slightly more luxurious appeal, GM made a crossover that’s attractive to premium SUV buyers and mass-market consumers alike. If you’re shopping for a premium crossover, and only have Acura, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus on your list, we recommend adding GMC.
