What're you favourite kind of expressions/emotions to draw? I love how you're able to convey such a broad range whilst keeping your style really clean and minimal its like magic <3

And thank you so much!!! (for External Memory, my big inspiration for conveying emotion even without very expressive faces or exaggerated body language is the works of Norwegian comicker Jason. He’s incredibly minimalist in those areas but still communicates emotions very clearly, especially because of his masterful understanding of pacing!)

Ooo yes this one is an old one that I am fully unsure if I’ll ever finish! Inspired by a brainstorm in the patc server. It’s another joplittle because I am predictable lmao

Modern au - ned has just gotten dumped by the guy he was dating. They weren’t that serious, but it feels like a bit of a last straw. Dating sucks and he can’t seem to find anyone he really connects with. His friends look at his dating profile and tell him. Ned. Buddy. Listen. This profile is terrible. You don’t look like yourself. Please for the love of god get some photos where you actually look soft, and nice, and pretty, and get rid of that picture of you and John and George on last years fishing trip.

Enter longtime close friend Thomas Jopson, who just so happens to be a fantastic portrait photographer, and who has absolutely no prior investment in seeing ned modeling partially clothed. Obviously.

Ned was running late.

It wasn’t that it was unheard of for Ned to be late to their Monday pub nights - although he did, usually, text them in advance and let them know if he was going to be - but this was the night that he had insisted all the rest of them be on time, because he was going to bring the new guy he’d been seeing to meet them. What Ned had told them about him hadn’t given any of them very high expectations to begin with, but the fact that he was now making Ned - Thomas checked his watch - over a half an hour late to his own plans, had Thomas’ expectations lowering even further.

“Five quid says they’re fucking,” said Sol, throwing back the last swallow of his pint. “Ned’s never been this late.”

“Good for them, if they are,” said George. “Our Ned deserves it.”

“Maybe he’s fake,” joked Tom. “He did say he’s French-Canadian. Could be a ‘girlfriend who lives in Canada’ situation gone too far, and now Ned’s too scared to show up.”

Thomas rolled his eyes affectionately. “Come on Hartnell, can you really see Ned making up a whole boyfriend?”

“I’m sure there’s a perfectly reasonable-” began John, but he cut himself off quickly as the door opened. “-See, there he is now.”

He waved Ned over, and Ned, eyes downcast and very clearly on his own, gave them a small wave before heading straight to the bar.

“Oh, shit,” said Sol. “Tarts, you may have been right.”

20 - If you wrote a prequel to [insert fic], what would it involve? (and thank you for clarifying this was for The Gentleman PI in a follow-up ask <3 )

I'm not going to because I like how this fic stands on its own, but I do like the idea of an Ed-centric prequel, looking at Hornigold taking him under his wing and the cases they worked on as Ed honed his craft. It would be more of a gritty drama style, so complete tonal whiplash from the fic itself, which is part of the joy.

23 - What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

I've just answered this one here! <3

But a bit more detail on the Reality TV AU - Stede is a B/C list celebrity soap star who won the nation's heart on something like I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, and Ed is a celebrity chef, and they end up on a travel food show sailing around trying different local restaurants and getting on surprisingly well, to the shock of everyone involved in the production.

questions for fic writers - (I am assuming the numbers are for this one and not AO3 wrapped)

10. How do you decide what to write?

From dreams that I've had for the really long things. Or day dreaming before going to sleep/whilst travelling on the train. Other times from prompts! Prompts can be helpful when I am having a creative block.

But it can be really difficult for me to come up with ideas... I've not looked at my Terror Bingo Card yet this year since getting it.

11. Are you partial to a certain character/pairing or are you more equal-opportunity? If you are partial to any character/pairing, why do you think that is?

I am partial to a certain pairing and the characters that make up that pairing. Even when I try to be more equal-opportunity I cannot help but include them in some way.

Jopson and Crozier are the pairing. I think it is because Jopson's entire character arc in the show revolves around Crozier, and I do not think it is possible to say that he is normal about that old man. Also the dynamic is fun to write! Give me class difference love stories, where characters are being brought down to the same level rather than rising up, any day.

(My favourite novel is Maurice by E.M. Forster which could explain some influence.)

I like also the idea of Crozier having someone on his level. Maybe not his rank, but it's clear that they've history together. He's told Jopson that cow story before who knows how many times. I just think the pairing has potential and I wish it was at least a little bit more popular.

4. What's an inside joke you have with your family or friends?

You know when you forget literally everything that's ever happened to you the moment someone asks you a question? Yeah that's me rn. I guess my picky eating has sort of become a little joke with my family (in the Wow Your Tastebuds Are Ridiculous, Anyway I Mad Two Types Of Rice To Accommodate That way rather than the dick way)

25. Fave season and why

Winter! I love cold and wet and dark <3 I was actually talking a bit about winter with my dad earlier for minorly complicated reasons, but it's such a like...misrepresented season. There's this impression of winter as a barren and freezing nothingness, but it's a season of bundling up warm with your loved ones and indulgence. There are trees whose branches streak across the sky and there are trees of the deepest green that keep tiny creatures safe within their embrace. There are bright red berries nestled in green holly that sustain robin redbreast as he stays by our side through the darkest nights. Mother bears nurse their newborn cubs through hibernation so that they can run in spring. I find comfort in the sharp edges and quiet darkness of winter, but that is far from the totality of the season

European folk i can do a little better (but still not great (Eurovision is my genre of choice)

I am a big fan of Tautumeitas from Latvia. Their whole discography is a vibe ngl

Tulia from Poland have a lovely sound (and were robbed at Eurovision) (they've done some great Depeche mode covers)

I now offer possibly the most beautiful piece of music ever put together. One day Sweden will send Jon Henrik Fjällgren to eurovision, but for now here is some Joik (Sami traditional singing) (for Joik-pop, the music of Keiino is wonderful)

3 ships: not hugely a shipping person anymore but i guess spirk will always be dear to me, if emma x knightley can be counted a ship then them, and annemax from black sails. really everything that goes on in black sails drives me crazy, but annemax is a special thing to me

first ship: who's to say really, maybe emma knightley (aged seven) but there was probably something before that too?

last song: chloë by father john misty! one of my favourites of all time, i love it's jaunt. could be emma if she didn't have the people who love her..

currently reading: on a pause or lull, going to start up with flowers in the attic when it arrives, paused foundation by issac asimov (wrong mood for rn), and rereading ways of seeing by berger. I'd like to get a copy of rosencrantz and guildenstern + the lion in the winter, bc it's been ages since I've read a play and i do enjoy it massively

last movie: i am right now watching gentlemen prefer blondes, but the last finished movie was the awful truth starring, i forget her name but she's very good, and cary grant

currently craving: ice cream so badly, a ben and jerrys cookie dough + a reeces peanut butter cup, followed up by a lovely fresh salad (beef tomatoes and shallots with sea salt white vinegar and good olive oil, and then a second more leafy salad with good crunch and a mustard italian dressing) but im just speaking from hunger

17. name 3 things that make you happy?

The sound of waves on a beach. The house that my family go to in Lyme is right on the sea front and I can hear the waves from my bedroom window and it's so comforting

Doing a craft project. I finished my latest one which was 2 years in the sewing in February this year and there's been an embroidery shaped hole in my heart ever since. I really need to fix that.

Being up early enough to see the sunrise and watching it with a cup of tea whilst still in my pyjamas

25. fave season and why?

Late summer/early autumn. When it's just turning cold enough to wear a coat, but I can still wear summer clothes underneath. When the lights are getting sharper and shorter and the leaves are just thinking of changing colour. That's a beautiful season.
