MASQUERADE OF THE GUILTY , MURDER MYSTERY EVENT!

“ hear ye, hear ye! monsieur neuvillette, the nation’s iudex, has invited everyone to attend the annual masquerade ball in fontaine. join us as we celebrate the week-long festivities alongside fulfilling your tasks, solving mysterious crimes, and completing challenges! ”

the game runtime will be from april 8-13.

members of astronetwrk are only allowed to participate this event as it mainly takes place in the network’s server, so we urge members to join the discord server to ensure the best playing experience as well.

there is no need for any prior knowledge in regards to the mafia game as you’ll be guided well, we only require your active participation!

in regards to participation, should any circumstances led you to become inactive, do give a heads-up to the event’s narrator (dan!) and things will shortly be adjusted!

tasks can be easily achievable, and challenges (such as prompts, etc.) are purely optional for players to participate if they wish for more points. however, it’s mandatory for them to participate the lights off and lights on rounds.

try to avoid causing any minor and major conflicts or fights with other players in the game.

players have the freedom to do anything (lie about your role, convince others that the other is the culprit, etc.) so long as there’s no harm to it and you’re playing by the rules.

overall, please be fair, honest, and considerate to others. those who are rather behaving poorly during the event will gain two warnings. should said warnings be ignored, the player will automatically get booted out of the event (and gain a demerit point in the server) should such behavior continue.

I deeply find the tumblr space, as a whole, so vitally valuable to our current society. I, like all of you, have painstakingly enjoyed sifting, repurposing, creating, and displaying a woven unique tapestry… mine is currently over 10 years long. A historical virtual “scroll” 📜… Manila ironic in the worst way: the scroll 🤳🏾 that consumes us.

This isn’t MINDLESSLY scrolling… it feels like… peaking penetratingly into the minds of human beings through their own perceptions.

Every fucking photo, gif, text post, meme, story, song, collage, any and all of it … was put there purposely. Everything … means something to someone here. That’s … fucking incredible.

That’s … fucking human magic. 🪄 something no other social media platform can recreate in the world of TikTok’s, we remained tumblr.

Every single mf time I find a new blog or revisit a mutual’s blog… and I just burst with color and vibrance and wild wickedness and I … drift… loosing myself in the back of your brains, I’m saved.

I’m saved from my own brain, trauma, habits, hangups, mental health… I’m just safe.. tucked behind YOUR brain… and they always fucking feel JUST like mine… so thank you.

I love human beings so much and this is my MOST favorite way to experience them. I’m so fucking happy I haven’t been able to log back into my TIKTOK for months. This is the only place I want to be when I’m online.

The tumblr scroll is so much more healthy: i see these feeds as very distinct and endlessly versatile flip book of human ingenuity and stupidity and comradery and community stitched together to make a pattern that mirrors a portion of a person… can you imagine? IT’S FASCINATING! I mean I know It’s equally ugly here and often… yet outstandingly but overwhelmingly … this is a safe space for creators and the many fandoms we express and decompress with.

i remain almost speechless,on the brink of pure pleasure… on how absolutely embedded i am into all of your collective energy on this stupid little imperfectly perfect fucked up little platform.

Look at April Fool’s Day: Tumblr reminded us all.. to just exhale and have fun TOGETHER. Ugh. gut me gently with the sheer scale of talent and genius and curiosity and kindness and skill and silly and authentic and absurd and individual yet succinct creation of … art. Disclaimer: I don't really like offering hot takes because when I was newer to fandom I'd take them as criticism of my own headcanons and creations despite the illogic of that. So please, if you also do this - reminder that you will never be able to please everyone, and most of us can still enjoy things we don't agree with.

So: Maglor is not an attention-seeking, melodramatic, vain diva. It's funny to use for comedic effect in fanworks, and I have, but as a serious character interpretation I don't care for it. There's just nothing to support it canonically imo. I think it's derived from modern conceptions of musicians and singers that do not directly translate to the world of the Silmarillion. Arrogant and boastful about his talent? Thinks his interpretations of events are the right ones? Willing to use performance to manipulate feeling and opinion? Image-conscious (in ways that are compatible with the ideal warrior/bard image in his culture)? Yes, all that works with the historical bardic traditions he is (fictionally) a part of and I love to see it. But not diva.

⏩ Which section of the Silm did you read through the fastest? (Couldn't put it down!) It was twenty years ago so I don't actually remember, but probably Of the Flight of the Noldor and Of Turin Turambar. Watching characters hurtle towards doom and destruction 👌.

Fix-its are a fun imaginative exercise but I'd never actually want to fix canon because it would make the story either less compelling or just not the same story.

So this is a small one from HoMe, but I'd use the version of the third kinslaying in Annals of Beleriand (The Lost Road) where Amrod and Amras are the main drivers who "ravaged Sirion" and Maedhros and Maglor were only there reluctantly and "sick at heart". It makes A&A more interesting as characters, and it makes M&M's (ultimately unsuccessful) redemption arc more coherent. (Might as well just call these Maglor Asks at this point 😆.)

Maximum chaos bonus question (💀): You have a "Get out of jail 'Doomed by the Narrative' free" card. Who do you give it to? Cheating, but (almost) all the women. Not to get them out of their tragic ends (see above lol), but to give them their own narratives, to raise them above the role of plot device in the stories of male protagonists. But that's what fic is for!

🐉 A lot of figures in the Silm have weird Eldritch powers or possibly biology. Tell us about your headcanons for one.

I have so many hc-s on this, but my absolute favorite (and most commonly used in writing) is the Songs of Power. They are thrown all over the place in the Silm and seemingly have no rule to how they are used, but I strongly believe that Song is at the core of elvenness. Being so attuned to Arda and starlight, Elves can feel the song of creation much more than mortals, and those who've been tutored under the Valar have learned to use it to their advantage with incredible mastery.

It's what makes the High Elves special in that sense, they are able to use Songs of Power for individual healing (Fingon upon Thangorodrim), collective healing (Maglor and his Noldolante), to inspire others in battle (Fingon's cry at the Nirnaeth), do actual fighting (Finrod with Sauron), etc. Something that the Noldorin descendants inherit and some of that power lingers even if not so dramatically expressed even far down Elros and Elrond's line.

Fingolfin lives! He actually wins the 1:1 against Morgoth and plucks the Silmarils from his crown. Fingolfin would remain High King and terrible events like the Nirnaeth, the ruin of Doriath, and the two kinslayings wouldn't happen.

But, I anticipate all sorts of other political challenges. In this scenario, Sauron's rise would happen much earlier, probably around the end of the first age, and the question of who owns the Silmarils would inevitably cause strife among the Noldor. The Fëanorians claim them as their birthright, and Fingolfin has them as his sole victory over Morgoth. Does he hand them over? Where does Fingon stand in this debate? And what kind of task does Thingol assign to Beren when he asks the hand of Luthien?

I don't have a single answer, but the possibilities are totally ticklish!

apologies @sallysavestheday! this is very late but i really appreciate the ask <3 i've given the answers some thought, but do not promise absolute plot coherence haha.

Which of the Valar do you feel the most affinity for and why?

ulmo! i went back and forth on this one, because yavanna and aulë are both wonderful, and their approaches to subcreation are equally fascinating, but as always i can't resist the call of the sea.

ulmo's intervention in events, both as a bearer of portents and as an agent of the closing off of valinor, have such wide-ranging consequences, and imply a very strong personality of his own. the fact that his waters contain the closest echo of the Song is such a beautiful and fascinating concept as well.

i love tolkien's imagery regarding the sea, always, and how absolutely fundamental it is not only for the delineation of the world but for the characters themselves.

this one is hard! lots of amazing options. i do think that thingol naming the silmarilion as lúthien's bride price was a world-tilting event, and too fundamental - the changes would be huge. i would however add that it would be very interesting if melian too made a request/demand, but this time to her daughter.

lúthien would be leaving the familial household to join beren's, in a sense, and melian is an ainur, who has taught her daughter much, and might have a last lesson to impart: she must give something of herself to her bridegroom's parents as well, and not exist as a gift to be given.

she is the gift of melian to thingol, and to elvenkind, and to her own act of creation, and ought to build something of her own to rival herself, if she means to join her fate to beren's.

what this reversal of bride-giving roles might turn into, i'm not sure. lúthien is a great singer, and able to disguise herself; she is not a warrior. beren, before wandering into the girdle, had committed himself to avenge his family against morgoth. he loved them so, so well, and he lost them horribly; and it is right, lúthien agrees, that she should honour beren's kindred, even if he is alone, and the last of the line of bëor.

which means making war on morgoth, or at least wounding him as he has wounded beren. melian is an ainur, and their sense of justice is very vast.

to say that thingol disagrees is an understatement. to say that thingol has become used to ignoring melian's wisdom is not an understatement, but it has become too common. melian does not allow it, now; she rises, dreadful and tall, the first light of the Song in her eyes, and makes her demand.

thingol has not the power to deny her; not when lúthien accepts.

beren (who is having a very intense experience, veering from the frightening meet-the-in-laws to a religious epiphany) also does not want to endanger tinúviel for anything; but that has never stopped lúthien. thingol arrests them, they get out, they go to hunt the silmaril together - for she has sworn on barahir's name, and emeldir's, that she will wound melkor herself.

it all goes pretty well, until they meet the sons of fëanor. who have sworn to stop at nothing to reach the silmarils; but are likewise bound (and, if the oath isn't as clear on that point, there is the emotional factor) to avenge themselves.

for fëanor, for finwë, for their lost kingdoms, for - well. reasons not so very different to beren's, it turns out.

please imagine the tensest road trip you have ever been on, and add some hands itching towards daggers. that is pretty much how this team-up goes. also sauron is there at some point, it's very awful and dramatic, rescues happen, wolves get bitten, songs get sung, the usual.

celegorm chats with huan at some point, it's vr good for him. curufin and finrod flirt a lot with treason and betrayal (and also each other) (and also heresy and song-engineering collaborations).

lúthien scars melkor. the spirits of emeldir and barahir might be involved, idk, it's touching and fierce and very heroic. beren swoons, and only a little because of the blood loss.

it's fine, in the end. fine-ish. some people die, but they mostly come back.

finrod shows up in doriath extremely wounded and quite terrifying - blood around his mouth, perhaps - leaning on lúthien (also terrifying, very mortal). beren gives thingol the silmaril, which is then quickly requested by finrod, who never actually received any ring or jewel of office as thingol's vassal prince. this was actually less foresight and mostly procrastinating the terribly passive agressive letters it would get him from fingolfin, but that is. well, no longer a problem, and very useful as is.

he in turn gives it to b&l, as a marriage gift.

this arrangement only works because of celegorm. celegorm has had a time of it! huan fixed him (dog angels can fix villains, women can't, that's just how it is), he had a near-death experience and saw oromë, he's actually for-realsies dead, don't look too hard at the black blood under his pasty skin.

this is not very sexy in theory, but he's making my-genius-brother-and-annoying-cousin-invented-necromancy-for-me work very well, which is for the best, since he married beren before beren married lúthien. before they even entered utumno, actually - just as celegorm was dying, and a second before finrod and curufin pulled off some wildly unethical cyro-freeze, snow-white sort of situation to keep him in stasis so none of the fëanorians feels inclined to do more murder than is ideal.

(huan was so sad. so so sad, in fact, he's actually the one who hunts down celegorm's fëa from its wanderings to eventually house it back in his body.)

fortunately, beren and lúthien and celegorm are united by the Experience of Death, and also being unhinged, and also shared custody of the Best Pup, so it works a little bit.

lúthien has become mortal. mortals do poligamy don't you know? (they don't often, but pretty much all the bëorians are, as mentioned, dead, and thingol does not know anything about human marriage rites). her kid is part elf and part maia, and fully the heart of the power of the Girdle of Dor Firn-i-Guinar.

melkor exists in terror of tiny five-year-old dior and his mighty power, mostly centered around the nauglamír (a gift from cousin finrod!)(carried in a pocket of his frock along with interesting pebbles and beloved earthworm friends hitching a ride).

somewhere in the distance, maedhros has a number of headaches, but then he generally does. you know how it is, with the in-laws; can't live without them, can't commit kinslaying if you're related to them. although the family reunions certainly make it tempting.

(the serious answer to this question is that i would change things so that at least one of nerdanel's sons stays behind, because her fate is horrible in that regard and i want to go nuts about at least one of them being not-awful, and also complicated feelings of family betrayal and righteousness veering on hypocrisy. i am making it maglor, because he's the most like her, and the confrontation with maedhros in the war of the wrath would be epic, and because of course i am, but literally any of them would be amazing)

it's almost time for lunar new year! a new year sparks new beginnings, and the roar of the dragon can be heard over the horizon as the sun peeks its eyes up the surface. join us as we witness the zodiac race in this day and age – between the growling tigers and the snarling snakes, the agile goats and the trusty oxs – who will win this rally? work together to solve puzzles and challenge each other... will things happen according to the legend of the zodiac?

rules.

the game runtime will be from 10-17 feb.

players will play either solo or in a team of two players.

as this game is based off the legend of the zodiac race – 12 different animals represent the players.

there is no need for prior knowledge on the legend! the animals serve as mascots and avatars.

some tasks may allude to certain lunar new year traditions – fret not, the staff will make sure that all tasks are easily achievable even if players are unfamiliar with lunar new year things.

players will need to work together / work to solve puzzles, complete tasks, and such to move up levels.

MASQUERADE OF THE GUILTY ; ROLES!

in the upcoming masquerade ball, it’s expected to see quite a diversity among people — from a distinct seer to a well-known couple who’s known for spending years together like soulmates. fret not, this edition of steambird brings you insight on the kinds of people you can expect from the upcoming festivities!

ROLES AND ABILITIES!

1 ) THE SEER — when adopting the ability of the seer, the player will be able to take a peek of another player’s role!

2) THE BODYGUARD — when adopting this ability, the player will be able to choose one player that they will dutifully protect from the guilty, giving them immunity.

3) THE HEALER — when having the healer’s role, the player will have the ability to choose one player to heal without knowing who died.

4) THE JOURNALIST — when equipping the role of a journalist, the player will provide clues as to who died and who did it.

5) THE DETECTIVE — when gaining the role of a detective, the player must take action and figure out who is the culprit behind the crimes committed, and will be the one to make the decision among the group based on the majority.

6) THE FOOL — a troublemaker by heart with mischief running through their veins. when a player obtains such mischief, they will be able to not only cause trouble, but also switch two roles of other players.

7) THE LOVERS — you’ll evidently be paired up with another player who has the lover role. if one is dead from the guilty, the other must choose to kill someone out of vengeance.

NOTE

rest assured that everyone has a chance to get most of these roles with no repetition during the entire duration of the game. during the discussion of the game, it is completely optional for you to reveal your role!
