AIDS and Other Clear-Cuts

The artist (Jan Zita Grover’s North Enough) writes about moving from San Francisco, where she has worked as a personal caregiver to many individuals who were dying, and died of, AIDS, eventually to the woods of Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota hoping for ‘a geographic cure’ to her burnout and grief. (344)

‘in their persistence [grief, mourning], generate a form of imagination—an awareness of the persistence of loss—that allows her to conceive of the natural world around her in ways that challenge the logic of commodity substitution characterizing contemporary relations of nature consumption” (344)

“The north woods did not provide me with a geographic cure. But they did something much finer. Instead of ready-made solutions, they offered me an unanticipated challenge, a spiritual discipline: to appreciate them, I needed to learn how to see their scars, defacement, and artificiality and then beyond those to their strengths—their historicity, the difficult beauties that underlay their deformity.  AIDS, I believe, prepared me to perform these imaginative feats. In learning to know and love the north woods, not as they are fancied but as they are, I discovered the lessons that AIDS had taught me and became grateful for them” (344)

Rather than the landscape of her dreams, the land looks more like a candidate for reclamation. Through Grover’s research we learn that the region is one that been ‘systematically abused: logged several times, drained, subjected to failed attempts at agriculture, depleted, abandoned, eroded, invaded, neglected.”

Jack pines are predominant in the region; tenacious, ‘the first conifers to reestablish themselves after a fire” (16), in their own way remarkable even as they are useless for lumber, short lived, and not at all the sorts of trees about which adjectives like ‘breathtaking’ circulate” (345) they are a loud testament to the violence that has generated them.

“the diminishment of this landscape mortified and disciplined me. Its scars will outlast me, bearing witness for decades beyond my death to the damage done here” (20) But still: the love emerges, painfully, gradually, intimately. (345)

She experiences the landscape in terms of loss and change, rather than idyll and replacement. It is all personal; it is all about developing a way of making meaning that recognizes the singularities of the past and takes responsibility for the future in the midst of intimate devastation. (345)

‘Environmental hubris’—fly fishing, the introduction of non-native fish to the river, changing temperatures of rivers caused by logging and diversion; specific policies, politics, and technologies that have had effects on the rivers, the fish, and the other species throughout the river and the north woods (356)

A refusal to demonize the ‘invasive’ species; Grover herself is ‘invasive’ both culturally and personally (white settlers and big city imports) thus her ethical claim is not for purity but for an active and thoughtful remembering of historical violences in the midst of ongoing necessity of movement and change (346)

Seek relationships with Clear-cuts and landfills in order to bring to the foreground the massive weight of human devastation of the natural world; “a discerning eye can see how unstewarded most of this land has been. The charm lies in finding ways to love with such loss and pull from it what beauties remain” (81) (347)

“she does not romanticize the dying even as she might mourn their loss to the world; instead [through Grover] we witness each loss as particular, irrevocable, and concrete: she is their witness” (347)

Can we learn to see these landscapes as creation as well as destruction?

Rather than mourn the loss of the pristine, she carefully cultivates an attitude of appreciation of what lies before her, beyond the aesthetic wilderness to the intricate details of human interactions with the species and landscapes of the region. In this manner she comes to be able to find the beauty in, for example, landfills and clearcuts; far from naivete or technophilia, this ability is grounded in a commitment to recognizing the simultaneity of death and life in these landscapes, the glut of aspen-loving birds in the clear-cut, the swallows, turkey vultures, and bald eagles near the landfill.

Under the cut is the updated Light Plague lore and also me critiquing humanity in the process

but of course, all deep dives of TLP will have discussions of varying degrees of body horror so be warned. Also it's so fucking long

Place is set somewhere in Europe but the apocalypse got so bad that no one can recognize what it was anymore. Even in near extinction of the human race, these assholes are still trying to segregate each other by groups, some bunkers, some labs, some towns and one is a living mansion on top of a tower wrapped in a garden of corpses surrounded by a wall. So TLP's camera or main focus would be four of the "Scorchers" in a bunker called Palethos. Scorchers are literally people who can be told to do whatever, so scientist, mercenary, assassin, resource gatherer, labrat etc. Human for hire basically and it's seen as a high honour to be one but it isn't. Four of them, Mortimer Tacre, Tak the Oracle, The Plague Kiwi, and Cobalt Roussel are the main focus of the theoretic show. Each of them represents a type of unfortunate person in the real world. Cobalt is the people pleaser who only does it because it's the safest thing to do, not once did he ever had a choice of his own, then PK who has been through tragedy after tragedy that he doesn't believe good exist anymore so why should he now, Tak, one of the smartest people that everybody goes to when they need something from them but would shun them otherwise, and Morter, who has never felt true satisfaction in his life but he came to terms with what was never meant to be so he uses what is left of his time to give the younger ones the happiness he never had.

Their jobs mainly is to play security guard for Palethos and data gatherers for 131, the establishment that protects Palethos. Other than tending to the survivors in Palethos, they should also protect them from the aggressive neighbours and mutations which they all call Dallums. Now here's the main course of TLP. The whole thing with the mutations and their miracle medicine, Chlerocyte.

Chlerocyte is a fungus found within a species of warm blooded cave fish that was discovered at the same time in the arctic. It develops in extreme cold and grows in warmth. The fungus attaches itself to the fish and they have a symbiotic relationship for the fish will provide the needed warmth for the fungus and in return, near immortality. Chlerocyte developed in a way that it will remember the body's average state of health or ideal state and reverts any damage if exposed to sunlight. wounds, lost limbs, impaled organs, brain damage, anything can be cured by it. A dying fish could just so easily swim out the vents and heal instantaneously . However, hubris is a tale as old as time. The fact that it's so easy to harvest without any hard method of applying to humans means that people will get arrogant and reliant on it to the point that even the smallest bruise is a call for Chlerocyte. Overusing and abusing the fungus/drug will warp when it should be active. They are supposed to be activated when there is abnormalities in the body. Compared to the fish that stays in the dark, humans are always exposed to the sun. Let the Chlerocyte wait long enough and it will start to "fix" something because getting activated with the sun is telling itself that the body needs it to do something, anything. And so, Dallums everyone.

Each mutation differs from how the mutated is harmed, their imperfections and sometimes what they touch. One of them was a near sighted man with a lithe frame so the fungus took it as a need to give him eyes all over his body and make his muscles swell. One Dallum was a woman nearly losing her life birthing a dying baby so the mutation gives her a flesh sack full of nutrients in an attempt to keep both her and the child alive, it worked but it's so heavy and the baby mutated with the forming of the sack so now it's part of it as a horrendous lump. Another Dallum, a gargantuan one even, was formed during a stageplay, one of the actors started to mutate and whoever he was touching became part of him and the dragon puppet he was leading with. The Dallum acts like a giant worm that constantly sings, the people it eats will merge halfway but not completely so those people retain their intelligence and memories but they are immobile so all they can do is scream to provide the Dallum's voice. Me designing the Dallums is like, I gotta make them compete with each other, they all have to be equally fucked up or gradually gets more and more fucked up. I mean one of them has his head shoved in a deer's ass and another's skin have so much fish attached to it.

The thing with Chlerocyte is simultaneously "fuck around and find out" and "play stupid games, win stupid prices" but also a jab that such a precious thing can be corrupted so badly but this time, the person who abused it is getting dragged with it.

no yeah, there's nothing anyone can do to revert Chlerocyte because according to it, what it does to the body is already perfect and it's making sure no one tampers with it. AKA you can't kill them and you can't just remove the spores and fungus unless you wanna be the ext Dallum in the files.

Anyway, survivors are at war with the Dallums while also at war with each other. At least most of them but not all. Their common enemy are the rich people living on the sky, watching them all for their entertainment. TV screens and cameras are a common theme in TLP if not the butterflies. Yeah, what you watch is sorta what the rich sky people are also watching except they watch the other bunkers but TLP the theoretical show itself are only focused on Palethos. Anyway, to boost their entertainment, they had this group of bounty hunters from across the entire country thing. They are given targets who are either actual terrible people or unrightfully called a criminal. So they released a bunch of vigilantes in the wild and they compete with each other because capturing their heads will grant them so much money. They're in the middle of an apocalypse and they still have inflation and rent debt, this is just like people still needing to work and go outside even if there was a pandemic.

Anyway, yeah, the Hunters are vicious and some of them are almost magic like Solasso. He can make portals with whips and ropes. No one can see him because if he's not hunting, he's bunking in a pocket dimension praising a sun god that he claims to speak to him but there's speculation that it's just his epilepsy. However, epilepsy could not explain the lasso portals so magic indeed coexists with science in TLP. Where did it come from? Funny story actually

Everyone knows and loves Tastriphe, aka Plague Kiwi. silly goose that man is. Anyway, he was working on a portal that can send resources to the near bunker without having to go up and send a delivery while Dallums chase you. Anyway, he failed at doing just that and instead, he opens up an interdimensional portal that invited a lot of universes over and brought over their beloved Ghost of Palethos, Sal Conspire. He is glitching in and out like he's from Spiderverse, silly goose. Other than Sal, while the portal was spazzing in different entries, some magic creatures, elements, and items slipped through the window and boom, earth has more magic than it already has. Excluding PK and Tak, they're like so magical there's not much explanation for them. All we know is PK is a fallen angel and Tak can see the future and do cool spirit stuff.

Tho, the most important thing to note about TLP in its entirety. It's not a story about the main characters. It's a collection of stories not just from the people of Palethos. Everything runs and flows and ties to each other. All of the characters are meant to be written as if they can be the main characters of their own shows because that's what real life is too, your own show but at the same time, you're part of someone else's. it's a big circle.

TLP should have the genuinity of real life but all of them deals with exaggerated or disguised in a metaphor problems

Oh there's also The Reaper Tree but that's spoiler endgame stuff so I'll leave it here now, tata

and now? wacko back into dinosaurs. Super into archaeology, I even have an internship lined up at a site near me. I paint; I've been to so many art museums around the world it's not even funny. I collect old books that need doctoring up, and then keep them safe. My fashion sense is literally a spectrum of "old grandpa," "tenured professer," and "guy fishing cat bones from the woods." Speaking of, I have multiple sets of bones; cat skull, cat ribs and radii, fake taxidermied squirrel, turtle shell. I wear leather bracelets and my Indiana Jones hat and white collared shirts when I go out into the desert and when I visit my city's Roman ruins.

Adventure Time - Ocean Princess: She finds great comfort in confined spaces, so if she gets scared she'll usually shrink inside a glass/jar/jug/fish tank and only come out once she feels safe again

The Owl House - Eris Mortimer: Once she found out that Belos was the one responsible for her family's death, she began to visit the ruins of her old home and "talk" to her mother every time she felt lonely or upset

Undertale - Ermycka: They were originally meant to have a brother, but I couldn't find a good use for him in his story (nor did I know how I'd portray their relationship) so I scrapped him from their backstory

My Hero Academia - Ehra: She's Shigaraki's adopted sister and she's very easily influenced by anything he says. Her quirk creates an inter dimensional portal where those surrounded by it are at her disposal, entirely vulnerable. Shigaraki sees her as a weapon of mass destruction, but slowly got attached to her

Demon Slayer - [redacted]: Her hunter's mark was triggered when she was trying to fight off a demon, before her official training. Muichiro saved her life and she's never left his side ever since!

Hiveswap - [redacted]: Since she's a human, Zebruh has signed some papers to make it so he legally owns her, because she'd be killed off by the empress otherwise. He shows her as much respect as he possibly can, and she's honestly thankful for him going so far to protect her!

Twenty facts (and some other random information)

Twenty is a 16 year old (in current times) hybrid who ended up on this earth due to his own dimension being destroyed thanks to an event known as the Z/im void.

He was cloned as an irken in the beginning however since he wasn't supposed to actually be cloned or even exist (he's an extra smeet), he was used as an experiment for five years

His genes were mixed with those of an extinct alien species

Until this dimensions Miyuki got him out of the situation and ended up raising him like he were his own son

He's technically an alternative version of Zim, and used to be known as Zimaki

He's trans, he realized this at a younger age. And chose his name based off the last number on his PAK serial number (20)

He's the one who made the puppets prosthetic legs...he also broke into the warehouse because he took a job to investigate the place (from this Earth's Dib)

He lives alone, and unlike canon z1ms base, his actually looks like a normal household (because it is, aside from the lab in the basement)

He's very good with science and machinery, and has some knowledge on medical skills

He's also an excellent baker

He's currently dating Scout

He actually got saved by scout when he went into the warehouse and almost got experimented on by Riley

His current form is not because of the curse on earth (due to irkens somehow being unaffected), however it does help him blend in well with this, since he is now nothing out of the ordinary on Earth.

Dib, 18, moved away after his father was judged (and found guilty) by Mortimer, as it was finally a chance of freedom for him. He and Twenty are still friends.

Gaz still lives at home with a family member who's taken over as caretaker. She and Twenty also still talk

Gaz also talks to scout (mainly online, they play video games together)

Miyuki died when he was ten, she has died saving him from being eliminated, however the blame was twisted and put on him because he was the only one there with her.

Miyuki is technically haunting him, and can go anywhere as long as twenty is there. It's unknown if he knows she's watching him or not.

Since the whole warehouse incident with Owen happened way before he was born, twenty only knows about Owen from what is recorded and from what the puppets have told him

He has a good relationship with Mortimer, Mortimer being the one who made it so Scout was allowed to leave the warehouse whenever she wanted to, and let twenty keep his life seeing that there wasn't any reason to kill him

He's also got a good relationship with Daisy as the two can get along on many things , and they both enjoy baking, although daisy. Can get competitive

He and Nick get along at times despite Nick being antisocial a good amount of time.

Twenty and Esmeralda get along as well, Esmeralda seeing Twenty as an older brother sort of figure

He's not exactly fond of Riley, due to her experiments on Scout. He does however do his best to be kind to her and help Daisy convince her to take the right actions

He eats bugs. I'm not kidding

He uses bugs in the food he makes (only for himself though). It's part of some sort of craving for smaller animals/bugs/fish from whatever he was combined with

He doesn't know what the extinct species was, and he may never. Probably not since his own dimension where they were was destroyed

So he can only guess, estimate and hope.

I remembered your Alexander Goth lookbook and it left me wondering since idk if anyone ask you yet: What's Alex's relationship with his family if that's okay to ask?

Oh I love talking about my son Alexander 😍!!! It's absolutely fine that you asked! This will be a very long answer so I apologize for that in advance!

I imagine that Alexander has a really good relationship with his whole family and that family in general is extremely important to him. He cares deeply about his culture, maintaining family traditions, knowing his family history/ancestry, spending time with his family (immediate and extended), and so on. But on the other hand, his parents are both very famous... and he hates that. He hates that his name brings him so much attention and that he feels like he has to share his parents with the world (my poor boy just wants a normal life tbh). He can also feel woefully normal and average at times next to his eccentric family who fit that macabre and over-the-top aesthetic so well. But the "negative" feelings he has are so so low honestly, because he feels lucky to have the loving family he has.

His relationship with each family member (in his household) is distinctly different.

Both of his parents are extremely supportive in their own ways, but between Bella and Mortimer, I've always thought that Alexander is closest to Bella. I can imagine her always doting over him because he actually lets her (pinching his cheeks, comforting him/reassuring him, calling him little endearing nicknames, that kind of stuff). Bella gives the best advice, and if Alexander needs a shoulder to cry on, Bella is always there! She's also the one who pushes him out of his comfort zone a lot and reminds him that he's perfect exactly the way he is and doesn't need to be so hard on himself (a reminder he needs every now and again).

Mortimer and Alexander's relationship is unique because I think Mortimer shows his love through acts of service (patiently teaching Alexander to play the piano, getting the chain on his bike fixed without saying anything, having Alexander's fish tank cleaned when he notices his son is super busy and hasn't gotten around to it etc.). He isn't a "sayer" but a "doer," so I don't imagine they have a lot of deep conversations - but the love is very much there*** and Alexander knows that! (For the record, I think they're actually more alike than they realize.)

Cassandra is very serious and kind of a moody loner, but I imagine that she is protective over Alexander (and that he is protective over her, too). They fight like siblings do of course, and she teases him relentlessly, but she knows him scarily well (she's just hella observative like that). Unlike Bella who might not want to push him to talk before he's ready, Cassandra will march right up to his room, barge in, and straight up be like "You're moping. You never mope. Tell me what happened." I do feel like he can ask Cass anything without being judged, and if he says something that scares or worries her she won't show it, which he appreciates because he hates worrying people/people fussing over him in general.

***Quick rant about Mortimer: I have always thought that Mortimer loves his family so much and sometimes people think otherwise because they only see the reclusive writer who is constantly working next to the most beautiful, charismatic, outwardly lovey person on the planet...but he is enamored and overwhelmed by the love he feels for Bella, Cassandra, and Alexander! He would do anything for them - he would kill for them, he would die for them - and feels very lucky to have them! He just sucks at PDA but Bella knows how he feels (he tells her when they're alone all the time) and his kids know he loves them! No Mortimer slander will be found on my blog lol!

Anyway I obviously love this family! Other families in town think they're super weird and creepy but really they're the happiest most loving bunch of people who also happen to be spooky as heck (with the exception of Alexander who is the least spooky of the three but supports his family's weirdness wholeheartedly).💕

What a series of weeks it's been. I was hampered by a few long shifts in my temporary job, and breaking my toe which has been more exhausting than I expected. My sims have had a bunch of stuff happen to, time to recap before beginning a new rotation!

Goth Household, Chapter 7

Things got worse between Bella and Mortimer. Mortimer reached 5 star celeb status. A maid issue resulted in the hiring of live in help, Dina and Nina Caliente. Bella vanished and Mortimer died leaving a confused Milton under the guardianship of Dina and Nina who now control the Goth fortune.

Suzanna had a second pregnancy. After initially struggling Adam accepted and welcomed his second son Pollock. Silas is thrilled with his little brother and Suzanna has reached the top of the scientist career.

3. York Household, Chapter 7

Both Aaron and Calista got promoted to Promising Prosecutor and Fourth Lieutenant respectively. Kelly had a mean streak and became a preteen. Deanna had a cute prom with Paris and aced her exams.

4. Chopra Household, Chapter 4

The Chopra's moved to their new home in Henford-on-Bagley. Cassandra worked hard for a promotion and Rahul corralled the twins. Savannah aged up to a fussy toddler and Mercedes aged up to a clingy toddler before she had even said her first word. Casandra and Rahul are now trying for another pregnancy.

5. Pancakes Household, Chapter 7

Trying for a daughter took the backseat this time as Dale had his last few days and Bob immersed himself in Home Chef Hustle. Iggy became a top tier Llamacorn Scout and Fergus reached his preteen years. Eliza worked so hard burnout threatened and Ginger joined the family.

6. New Goth Household, Chapter 2

Marta became Keira's girlfriend and moved in to the mansion. Joey's count is now at 5 sims. Alexander and James adopted two cats and tied the knot. After running away from home Milton is now officially living with his older brother.

7. Villareal Household, Chapter 4

Luna finally gave birth to twins Alfred and Rilian. Raising a sensitive infant alongside a cautious one is not a recipe for harmony and Luna suffered from postpartum depression. Devin stepped up to help and also achieved her aspiration of gold performance in a movie gig.

8. Foster Household, Chapter 7

Kayleigh sold enough paintings to reach 4 star celebrity status. Harvey caught and released his first endangered fish, and got so old his hair turned white. Carson mostly annoyed Reece and rode around the islands. Reece had a lot happen. He got a new boyfriend, finished his high school years, and has moved out to join Samir in a new household next rotation.

9. Nishidake Household, Chapter 4

Beloved Allie crossed the rainbow bridge giving Charlie a fear of death. Clover grew into a big dog and Kaori maxed the media production skill. Finally Charlie scored a promotion and the couple beat the spice festival curry challenge!

For today’s prompt: Kensi and Deeks discuss their pasts. I was watching “Into the Breach” from last season and Kensi and Deeks were talking about their relatives (most of whom we’ve never heard about before). I was curious if these additional family members played a roll in our favorite couple’s childhoods.

This one takes place after “Into the Breach”.

“Ok, so we had another cancellation so now we have two possible seats for Cousin Mortimer,” Kensi told Deeks as she stared at her seating plans once again. After finishing up the case, she’d headed over to the bar to see how Deeks and Roberta had fared with the health inspector. She’d been pleasantly surprised to find both Deeks in good moods. The prospect of finishing their to do list was not nearly so pleasant.

“Yours or mine?” Deeks asked, tossing a bar towel over one shoulder and coming to sit beside her.

“Yours.” She slid the RSVP his way and Deeks stared at the name for a while.

“Huh,” he frowned, his eyes distant for a second and then added, “I haven’t seen them in years. Mom must have added them to the list.”

“Did you see your relatives a lot growing up?” Kensi asked. It was a question that had been on her mind ever since they’d started pooling their respective families together. It turned out they both had a lot more random aunts, uncles and cousins than they’d originally thought. Naturally, Kensi’s mind had turned to Deeks’ past which was still somewhat a mystery to her.

“Some. Most of them lived kind of far away or we weren’t very close with them,” Deeks answered casually while he ticked off something on their “massive” list.

“What about when the stuff happened with your dad?” she continued carefully.

“What do you mean?” he asked with a frown.

“I get you not being close to everyone, but you’ve mentioned your Uncle Bob a lot. I don’t understand why no one helped you and your mom out after your dad went to prison,” Kensi explained and she watched as Deeks’ expression slowly changed with the distant look that sometimes accompanied these conversations.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t really know. I don’t even know if my mom reached out to anyone-she was pretty embarrassed and self-conscious about what happened. And we’d already become pretty isolated be then,” he said, pausing to let out a long breath and rearrange his hair. Kensi let him think, allowing him to lead now.

“My best guess is that mom maybe asked for help with finances-which would be a stretch cause you know she’s proud as hell-but Uncle Bob never had any money. And the rest...maybe they thought mom deserved it for marrying dad or were afraid they get saddled with both of us.” He shrugged and gave Kensi a small, crooked smile.

“They don’t sound like very good relatives,” Kensi commented. “Are you sure you want them at our wedding?” Deeks snorted at that, shaking his head.

“I’m pretty sure Mama would kill both of us if we uninvited anyone,” he said, only partially joking. “Besides, I like Uncle Bob. Even if he is a little crazy.”

“Yeah, he certainly fits right in.”

“I think I should maybe be offended by that,” Deeks said, scrunching his face up into a ridiculous expression that she couldn’t help laughing at.

“You are such an idiot sometimes. But I love you,” she said fondly, leaning over to kiss him and he grinned against her lips.

“What about you?” Deeks asked when they pulled apart. “Why didn’t you stay with one of your relatives after your dad passed?” He asked the question with the same underlying caution she had. It was funny, she hadn’t considered how similar those aspects of their pasts were.

“I guess like you, I didn’t have a close relationship with family since we moved around so much. And as a teenager, I figured if I ran away to one of them, they’d just ship me off to my mom,” she said thoughtfully, blowing out a long breath.

“I’m sorry, baby. We don’t have to talk about it anymore.”

“Deeks, I’m the one who started this. And I’m ok. It’s actually nice to talk about this stuff without feeling like it needs to be some kind of secret.” She squeezed Deeks hand and he leaned down to kiss her again.

“So does that mean we finally have the seating done?” Deeks asked, getting up to finish up something behind the bar and effectively ending the prior conversation.

“Unless we get another late RSVP,” she said with a roll of her eyes and then leaned forward to watch him. A smile slowly spread across her face. She really did love him beyond reason. While he started wiping down the top of the bar, he asked,

“Hey, did I ever tell you about the time Uncle Bob took me fishing?”

“No, I don’t think you did. What happened?” she said, resting her chin in her palms. She sighed contentedly as Deeks began to spin a ridiculous story, clearly in his element.

Equipment

Scorpion Ship: The Scorpion-Ship is a submersible vehicle and is the primary tool of the Scavenger. In addition to navigating through the ocean depths, the ship is also equipped with four, modular legs for traversing the ocean floor. The ship is also equipped with a "Retriever Beam", which uses a column of energy to pull cargo from sunken ships. In addition, the Scorpion-Ship can also generate a Force Field beam, ideal for catching prey. The exterior of the ship is extremely durable and can withstand massive blunt force attacks, such as a ramming bull whale. The ship can also coat itself with a sheathe of ice, which is ideal for warding off heat-seeking weapons.

History

Peter Mortimer was a deep-sea diver and pirate who called himself the Scavenger. Dressed in a specially-designed diving suit, he plundered the ocean waves, scavenging for valuables from sunken ships. He operated out of an advanced submersible vessel called the Scorpion-Ship. At some point in Mortimer's past, he had an alliance, possibly even a partnership with the Ocean Master, but the nature of this relationship has never been expanded upon, save to say that neither man had any real loyalty to the other.

Many years ago, the Scavenger learned of an alien artifact called a Time Decelerator. He believed that this device would grant him immortality. He journeyed to Atlantis and confronted the Atlantean king, Aquaman. Believing that Aquaman secretly knew the location of the Time Decelerator, he kidnapped his wife Mera and his son Arthur Curry, Jr. He used the technology from his Scorpion-Ship to poison the waters of the Atlantic, forcing Aquaman to help him locate the device. It was actually the Ocean Master however who found it, and though he pointed the Scavenger in the correct direction, he ultimately betrayed him by sabotaging his Scorpion-Ship. The Scavenger found the Time-Decelerator and activated it. Rather than bestowing immortality however, it actually regressed him in age until he ceased to exist. 

The Scavenger's essence remained in limbo for many years, but he eventually reconstituted himself to his correct size and age. Donning a new costume, he rebuilt the Scorpion-Ship and allied himself with Kobra.

The Scavenger located a highly coveted sunken submarine called the Bellerophon and began looting it on behalf of Kobra. This brought him into a second confrontation with Aquaman, and this time, he succeeded in keeping Aquaman at bay. Aquaman persevered though and used the aid of some sea barnacles to down the Scorpion-Ship and capture the Scavenger. Infuriated by his underling's failure to raid the Bellerophon, Kobra had the Scorpion-Ship destroyed.

Scavenger is later shown to have reformed, and even become friends with Aquaman. Their last battle was over stolen cargo that turned out to be vaccines. Mortimer's conscience got the better of him, and he was treated like a hero for the first time as he helped deliver them safely. Aquaman helped him clean up his act, and even become a business owner.

After, Scavenger had somehow acquired the avatar of the barracuda. He used his newfound powers to fulfill his pedophilia desires and also profited from selling videos of him raping young boys and girls. Now calling himself Barracuda, he was tracked down by Hawkman, who was investigating other people who had become avatars like himself. Barracuda tried to overpower Hawkman with his mental powers but when he failed, Hawkman slammed his face into a computer screen, killing him.
