You know a silly thing I want?

I think that Naomi and Gin should team up and be a non-superpowered version of Soukoku. They're already enemies via being on different sides but more than that....Naomi's intelligence and quick thinking + Gin's almost supernatural skill with knives? That's more soukoku-y than the more fighting-based partnership Akutagawa and Atsushi have.

But even more than that...they are both sisters to powerful members of their organisations, they are both the only significant character-based rather than author-based characters, and they both have that whole illusion/more than they seem thing going on. Also, IRL Akutagawa and IRL Tanizaki bickered or something about literature, didn't they?

Anyway, yeah...it would be cool to me to see them team up....

author reflections: junichiro tanizaki

As I spend my afternoon reading Tanizaki’s The Makioka Sisters, it just prompted me to discuss him as an author, based on the books that I’ve read from him. 

So far, I’ve read The Key, Naomi, and Quicksand, and I want to say that I actually liked them all. Despite being a man and being labelled as an “erotic writer,” the way he writes women are surprisingly tasteful and empowering (*spoiler*I mean sure, Naomi was sketchy because the titular character got groomed at an early age, but at the end, she did get the last laugh lol), unlike *cough* Haruki Murakami *cough* That says a lot, seeing as he was an author during the period where a woman having agency is unheard of. He gives his women characters agency, gives them a chance to reject tradition, to be their own people, not just plot devices for his male characters. In fact, he depreciates his male characters often (at least in the three novels that I’ve read), which I think is correct behavior lol.

He does praise the West a lot to the point of glorification, but I think this is his way of trying to make a compromise between tradition and modernity as Japan undergoes a transition during his time. It’s evident in his work how ahead of his time his notions of modernity is, especially with regards to culture and sexual politics. 

I jokingly say that Tanizaki is that one Wattpad-esque writer in Japanese classic literature, but his work actually gives relevant social commentary about the Japanese society during that time. 

I’m not yet finished with The Makioka Sisters, so I hope I haven’t spoken too soon. But the way things are, I think the book will be great.

Reason: Self-awareness and Reader helped BEAST! Dazai (because now he was sure, that Oda won't die). So, he demanded for Port Mafia calling Reader that. Others equally use Light of hope and Guiding Light.

Reason: Both Akutagawas will deny it, but they adored Little Light, so they choose light related nicknames.

BEAST! Oda - Muse (Novel Luck)

Reason: Writer-themed nicknames.

BEAST! Kunikida - Perfection (Ideal)

Reason: Reader became a Perfection/Reachable Ideal for both Kunikidas, while they tried to deal with the fact, that they were fictional.

BEAST! Yosano - Suama (Dango)

Reason: Both Suama and Dango are Japanese desserts/sweets. And both Yosanos think that Reader are sweet and nice.

BEAST! Tanizaki - Mystic (Rice Cracker)

Reason: For BEAST! - from Tanizaki's Illusion. For OG- from Tanizaki's love of Chinese food. With a bit of "me" lore, ever since I was little I loved Chinese rice crackers. I still love them.

BEAST! Ranpo - Trusted Assistant (Best Assistant)

Reason: Both Ranpos see Reader as their future assistant.

Reason: Came from the fact, that Reader's presence is calming for Ryunosuke. While BEAST! Gin simply use something soft, OG! Gin use her and her brother's favorite drink.

BEAST! Higuchi - Pumpkin (Honey)

Reason: Higuchis are more "traditionally romantic" and picked up traditional nicknames.

BEAST! Tachihara - Pencil Prodigy (Hyacinth)

Reason: From Tachihara's likes (pencils and hyacinths).

Reason: Both Butterfly and Almond blossoms are symbols of hope.

Angos were in hacker teams, reason for BSD Cast having an access to Reader's phone. For BEAST! Ango Reader became a symbol of hope for a new world. For OG! Ango Reader became a hope for a new life and repairing of old friendship.

Reason: BEAST! also called Reader Myshonok, but, after a long talk/near fight with OG, he agreed to call Reader Myshka instead. The difference:

Myshonok is baby mouse in Russian.

Myshka is an "affectionate" form of the word "mouse".

BEAST! Shibusawa - Green peridot (dragon's jewel)

Reason: Green Peridot stone is a symbol of strength, creativity, vibrance, energy, and a naturally curious nature. BEAST! Shibusawa, who didn't become a singularity, saw Reader as someone interesting.

OG! Shibusawa view Reader not only as interesting, but the most valuable jewel in his "collection" [of people he knew].

On a ship, when the fight with Dostoyevsky and the Hunting Dogs had finally ceased, Ranpo finds you standing in a quiet, somewhat secluded corner. Your eyes shimmered in relief; after all, your colleagues and friends survived the battle you thought everyone would die in. Although the scars are still fresh, some still bleeding and far from being healed, they would someday barely be visible.

Ranpo rests a hand on your hip, pulls you close to him like he always does and pulls a laugh from your lips. A melodious one which he hadn’t got to hear in so long and oh dear, it makes his heart leap in joy just like the piece of cake upon your plate that he steals a sneaky bite from.

“Not quite as sweet as you are, but it’ll do,” Ranpo mumbles, crumbs of the now gone cake on the corner of his lips.

You should be used to Ranpo comparing you to candy and claiming that you were so much sweeter than anything else he ever had on his tongue. Such compliments always send heat to your cheeks and fluster you to a certain degree. After all, the detective’s loud words of appreciation could be taken quite the wrong way, especially with Naomi, Tanizaki or Dazai around. Kunikida only ever scolded Ranpo for his choice of words when one of the aforementioned three were present.

“Oh, be quiet. It’s embarrassing.” A casual wave of your hand is enough to fan and cool off your heated skin.

“How?” Ranpo questions like the oblivious man he is when it comes to affections, relationships and all that comes with it. “First, you say you would like more compliments and when I do say something, it’s not the right thing even though you obviously like it.”

All he gets as an answer is another laugh of yours and a brief beat of silence falls over the two of you. A beat in which you watch the Agency exchange drinks, stories and laugh about something Kenji said. Yosano pours Kyouka a cup of cherry juice, cheeks flushed and a bit of alcohol running through her veins. Kunikida is busy smacking Dazai’s head with a newspaper; the brunette is shamelessly flirting with a waitress as always.

This is the picture you dreamed of seeing again.

And the beat of silence passes when Ranpo asks a certain question that has been on his mind for quite a long time. Although he already knows why you did what you did, he needs to hear it from you like the confession of a criminal.

Except you are a criminal and he is the crime you’re committing.

“Why did you believe me when no one else did?” A pout lingers on Ranpo’s lips; all because he cannot figure you quite out. The entirety of the Agency used to be hell-bent on receiving the award that had brought ruin over the infamous Detective Agency, but then there was you who agreed with Ranpo’s word without knowing why he would refuse the shiny honor.

You were the only one who had stood up from their desk, a frown worrying your face and an urgent tone in your voice to listen to Ranpo, because God knows, he is always right. He was not throwing a tantrum, but rather trying to save his colleagues from the certain doom of the Decay of Angels. If the infamous detective is so absolutely skilled at solving murder mysteries, why should he be unable to warn his friends of imminent danger?

Such was your reasoning.

At first, you look at Ranpo like he had greens stuck between his teeth, but surprise quickly morphs into a fond expression. Gently, you rest your head on his shoulder, hold his hand in yours and give it a firm, reassuring squeeze. To you, it’s painfully obvious.

“We’re on each other’s team, you know?,” you muse with a smile upon your lips.

Ok if I were to be completely frank. As someone who has written other illusionist muses before, I actually am not a huge fan of the whole "I saw through this illusion of my lover because I know them intimately" troupe, also the "it's just an illusion so it can't hurt me!" troupe is equally infuriating.

Like, it's actually really interesting because there's this thing called the "nocebo effect" that's the inverse of the placebo effect, where negative expectations can cause actual negative effects on your health. Not to mention how easy it is to put ideas into a person's head. Honestly? Tanizaki probably doesn't need to fill in the fine details of his illusions, because those who see them end up filling in the details themselves.

It's quite literally, all in your head, and therefore it is terrifying close to one of your vital organs.

So about that episode....

Are we gonna talk about how Yosano remembers all the soldiers that died even 14 years later? Or how protective Tanizaki is of all the ADA members (told Yosano he'd take her place, yelled at Jouno for hurting Kenji, his whole thing with Naomi, his concern when Atsushi was kidnapped, yelling in absolute terror when Kunikida sacrificed himself)? Or how Ranpo and Yosano are actually THE friendship of all time? Or how Fukuzawa got so feral and enraged for her sake? Or how Yosano sees the agency as the place that actually wanted her even if it didn't need her? Or how she will do anything to protect it? Or how this entire season is just telling us what a family they are? And how her entire backstory is all about the value of life and how she held onto how valuable individual lives were despite everything about it (war, her ability, Mori) telling her to commodify humans lives? Or just how incredibly Yosano's kindness is portrayed, showing us that she can be kinda sadistic and sarcastic and terrifying but still be called kind? Or, or, or ....

 How my muses play rhythm games:

God mode. Plays on the fastest speed and hardest difficulty- often stops playing out of boredom if they can’t find games that are hard enough:  Natsume, Che’nya, Himari, Yosano, Selena, Xingqiu, Gorou, Kakyoin, Josuke and Ranpo ( if he got over being an old man long enough to play them ).

Doesn’t play them unless their friend gives it to them if they’re struggling- they do decently well but tend to break their combos near the end because they got too comfy:

Kaito, Ibara, Daisuke, Mao, Mistel, Giorno, Josuke ( he gets obsessed if it’s the same one and becomes the one at the top ) and Albedo.

Decently good at it, nothing to brag about though: 

Salem, Aiko, Yuzuki, Childe, Thoma and Chase.

Absolute fucking garbage and sobs the entire time they play them:

Okuyasu, Hirito, Natalie and Tanizaki.

Wouldn't be caught dead playing one:

Risotto, Mistel, Iris and Scaramouche.

After all the practicing with Naomi and now it was finally happening- he was freaking out just as much. "Good! Then! Let's find a small restaurant or bakery for food instead?" He offered, linking your arms with a grin, bopping your nose. He was so much more carefree

Tanizaki and Akutagawa were getting along a little too well in BEAST.

Then again, their real life counterparts were friends with each other.

I loved seeing Rashoumon being used for mundane things a little too much.

No matter what AUs he lived on, Kenji would forever be the ray of sunshine.

I just loved Akutagawa bonding with the ADA.

Too bad, it had to come with the prize of Atsushi living in hell…

If BEAST was supposed to be a fanfiction written by Dazai… that explained why Yosano and Kunikida acted more extreme here compared to their main timeline counterparts.

Still, Kunikida hugging that child to comfort him was just too cute.

I think the condition Odasaku put up was second only to Yosano in difficulty.
