Was anyone gonna tell me that the original voice actor for Gol D. Roger (Ōtsuka Chikao) was the father of Blackbeard's voice actor (Ōtsuka Akio)?
Blackbeard's seiyū is the son of Gol D. Roger's seiyū...huh.
That's a bit ironic.

I'm curious, do you have specific favorite voice actors for the Sonic characters? (Like just the main few, Sonic, Shadow, Tails, etc.) if so, may we know your favorites?
Brace yourselves, this is gonna be a long one so under the cut.
Tumblr media
Jun'ichi Kanemaru is THE standard for Sonic. The guy is passionate about the role and captures him perfectly. Plus, he's a great singer! The English VA that came closest to matching him is Jason Griffith. (honorable mention to Devon Mack. Low as my opinion is of Prime, Devon's voice is actually pretty suitable for Sonic. Would like to hear him in a better product!)
Tumblr media
The late Chikao Ōtsuka for Eggman was wonderful, but I have zero complaints with Mike Pollack. Really, no matter what style or tone he's portrayed Eggman in, he's always done it superbly. I'd say of all English VA's that worked in this series, Mr. Pollack's probably been the one who's NEVER had a miss. Guy's got incredible range even in his work outside of Sonic (using this as a chance to shill the Pluto Anime since he starred in it. GO WATCH IT PLEASE.)
Tumblr media
Tails is really really REALLY hard to mess up. His voice actresses have typically been great at capturing him (save for OVA Tails who talks like he has a cold). Coleen's a fine Tails and suitable replacement for Amy Palant but I may still prefer Palant just because she's the nostalgic one for me being in all the 2000's games plus Sonic X.
Tumblr media
Knuckles voice preference is a tough call. His VA needs to be able to play up both his aggressive and gentler sides. It's a toss up between Dan Green and his current VA Dave B Mitchell. Mitchell has been doing good work in the animated shorts so I like him and he's the best we've had since Dan moved on. His Japanese VA, Nobutoshi Kanna, is great as well for the same reasons. :)
Tumblr media
Amy's best actress is still her JPN VA, Taeko Kawata (who is also a lovely singer!) Lisa Ortiz to this day is STILL her best ENG VA. She captured Amy's youthful, cutesy appeal but can IMMEDIATELY switch to her assertive side naturally. Fantastic range and it's too bad that Amy's assertiveness has been subdued so much lately that this can't be fully appreciated anymore.
Tumblr media
Cream's had far fewer options to choose from. I like both her actresses in JPN (Sayaka Aoki) and ENG (Rebecca Honig) honestly. I do like the almost whispery gentleness to her ENG voice particularly. Just helps her feel very soft and sweet.
Tumblr media
Shadow's JPN VA, Kōji Yusa, is so good. You really can't go wrong here. For the ENG VA, this might be a bit controversial because while I appreciate David Humphrey as Shadow's debut in SA2, I'm still partial to Jason Griffith purely because once he got accustomed to Shadow as a character, he really elevated the role. I think his performance in 06 was one of the best moments for the character overall.
Tumblr media
Rouge might one of the few times where I actually prefer her current ENG voice actress, Karen Strassman, to her older one. Her JPN VA, Rumi Ochiai, is THE standard tho so Karen just suits her best as a close match! Youthful yet still mature and her flirty quality doesn't sound too forced.
Tumblr media
Omega's JPN VA (Taiten Kusunoki) IS SO AMAZING. It's hilariously deeper than I expected but still robotic so something about it just WORKS. His ENG VA is alright too. But I just love the JPN Voice, I don't know why.
May do a part two if I have time for the others!

Profiles in Villainy
Doctor Eggman
Ivo Robotnik, better known by the alias of ‘Doctor Eggman,’ is an evil scientist and the arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog.  A self-proclaimed genius and diabolical inventor, the doctor constantly hatches plots to establish his ‘Eggman Empire’ all across the earth and build his own utopia of ‘Eggmanland.’
It is possible that Eggman had once been a kindly scientist named Ovi Kintobor who became twisted and evil following a laboratory accident.  From there on out, he dedicated himself to use his vast intellect to fulfill his egomaniacal ideals.
Despite the villain’s brilliance, Sonic and his friends have always found means to dash Eggman’s dastardly machinations. Never discouraged by such setbacks, Eggman has returned time and again with a seemingly endless supply of wild schemes to make his dreams of world conquest become a reality.
Dr. Eggman first appeared in the 1991 video game, Sonic The Hedgehog and would later appear in the 1993 animated series of the same name.  Actors Masaharu Satō, Chikao Ōtsuka and Kotaro Nakamura have voiced the villain in the Japanese language versions; with actors Deem Bristow and Mike Pollock voicing the character in the English language versions.  Dr. Eggman’s first animated appearance was in the debut episode of the Sonic The Hedgehog cartoon airing on September 18th, 1993.

New video up! Did you know jp version of the game Chikao Ōtsuka acted as the voice for Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Similar to in real life, Big Boss also acted as the "father" of Akio Ōtsuka's character, Solid Snake. According to Outcast Podcast and Famitsu, he was chosen for the role by Hideo Kojima as a means to thaw the ice between the estranged father and son. ( They had bad relationship)

Sociopath Profile: Doctor Eggman
Tumblr media
Real name: Dr. Ivo Robotnik From various media in the franchise Voiced in Japanese by Masaharu Satō (SegaSonic the Hedgehog), Chikao Ōtsuka (1998-2015), and Kotaro Nakamura (current) Voiced in English by Deem Bristow (1998-2004) and Mike Pollok (current)
The most well-known bad guy in the entire Sonic franchise. Despite being portrayed as bumbling and comedic, Eggman does fulfill many of the traits of a sociopath.
His whole goal is world domination, which already shows his narcissism. He believes that only he is fit to rule the world. This is coupled with the fact that the vision of his empire usually has some grandiose images of himself. That’s why he’s so persistent to do it even after repeated failures. And those failures do not sit well with him and his ego, causing him to use more violent methods to accomplish his goal. Another sign is that he may be disgusted if others are trying to destroy the world, but he sees no issue with using violent methods if he’s the one in control of it.
One underrepresented symptom of sociopathy is a lack of long-term planning. Sure, Eggman does plan such grandiose and elaborate schemes to rule the world and obtain his empire… but then what? No matter what, he never really considers what he’s going to do with the world once his empire is built. He mostly just thinks about having the world at his fingertips and not caring about what that entails.
He can be superficially charming. While he comes off as an egotistical despot, he does have his moments of looking affable. He even treats his enemies with respect. He admits that he doesn’t want to kill Sonic, despite being fulling willing if he screws up his plans. At times, he can come across as a downright genuine nice guy. (At least, when he’s winning.)
Regardless, living beings have no consequence to him. He either sees them as resources (as in living batteries), pawns, or things to crush. Sonic Unleashed (2008) shows how far this can go. When he ended up splitting the world in half, there is no way there weren’t at least millions of lives claimed in that event. Sonic Forces (2017) shows him nearly conquering the world with his even more sociopathic henchman, Infinite, at his side. He is aware of how dangerous that maniac is, yet still works with him as long as he serves his ends. The moment he doesn’t, he throws Infinite to the side.
Moreover, he never shows any remorse for what he does. He tries to stop short of complete destruction, but that doesn’t mean he won’t kill everyone who dares gets in his way. Anything is viable in his quest for power as long as it helps him advance. Even after repeated failures, he still persists in his destructive plans to fuel his own ego. While his backstory has been expanded upon over the years, he’s still the same megalomaniac while showing no signs of wavering from this path.

This is for Chikao Ōtsuka and Leonard Nimoy, the original voice actors of Master Xehanort that passed away.
This is also for all the Kingdom Hearts fans that have passed away—that will never know how this story ends.
What I’m holding here isn’t just a game. It’s a magical ticket to other worlds, both old and new.

I think about Chikao Ōtsuka’s Eggman laugh a lot because it is PERFECT and I LOVE IT In your opinion which Eggman voice has the best laugh?
I LOVE ŌTSUKA’S EGGMAN LAUGH TOO!! IT WARMS MY HEART,,,
I’d say Mike Pollock’s heheh and hohoho laugh (in both the lower and higher pitch) because I adore the gruff santa-esque chuckle and Deem Bristow’s diabolical MWAHAHAHA because in Adventure to Heroes he has such a chaotic energy and it sounds like he’s having a lot of wonderfully evil fun. Those two are my favorites besides Ōtsuka’s. They’re the three that have stuck with me the most, I can always hear them in my head so clearly and I love them :’)

I have now officially liveblogged every episode of Sonic X. That was certainly... something. It sure had its ups and downs, didn’t it?
I’ll be honest, this show obviously isn’t for everyone. The English dub in particular has many flaws, to say the least, plenty of which I pointed out while blogging about it. I didn’t go too much into the acting for it because, well, let’s face it, that dead horse has been beaten so thoroughly that you can’t even tell it’s a horse anymore. Though I do feel it only fair to mention the voice acting for one specific reason.
You might recall that way back towards the very beginning of these liveblogs I mentioned that the English dub did at least one thing right, in my opinion. I mentioned something that I called the First Sonic Voice Recasting Controversy where the cast for this show ended up replacing the ones for the games in 2005, as well as the Second Sonic Voice Recasting Controversy where they replaced nearly the whole cast again in 2010. Now you might’ve noticed that I’ve briefly mentioned the actual names of some of the voice actors for this dub here and there, but one I never said by name was the one for my favorite character: Doctor Eggman. It’s not because he’s a terrible person or anything (as far as I’m aware he’s alright), I just wanted to save mentioning him for the very end for the, like, I dunno, one or two people who don’t know this.
In the English dub of Sonic X, Doctor Eggman is voiced by Mike Pollock.
You know how I say “nearly” the whole cast got replaced in 2010? He’s the reason for that “nearly” part of it. They did have tryouts for Eggman, but found that nobody could quite match him, so they brought him back, making him the only one who managed to keep his role after the 2010 recasting. (After he was picked and first went in to record lines for Eggman, out of curiosity he asked “Am I the only one?” The response he got was “You’re the only one [from New York] as far as I know”.) As of this post (2019), he’s been voicing Eggman in the games for fourteen years, and sixteen years total once you include Sonic X, which is longer than any of Robotnik’s previous English actors combined. (Actually if he keeps this up for a few more years he may even surpass Eggman’s longest recurring seiyuu, Chikao Ōtsuka, who sadly passed away in 2015.) He’s also been nominated three times for his voice acting as Eggman since the recasting, so I think it’s safe to say it’s been going pretty well for him.
Personally I think he’s gotten even better at voicing him as time’s gone on, and his acting for Eggman is part of what endeared me to the character and brought me back to the Sonic franchise again. I know he wasn’t always Eggman and can’t be Eggman forever, but at this point it’s hard for me to imagine anyone else being quite as good at being this character than him. (Of course maybe someone else could prove me wrong, but... Let’s just say that person is not Jim Carey.) If it weren’t for this show and the circumstances behind everything, he wouldn’t be Eggman right now, and I’m glad things kinda worked out this way.
I guess this is a long-winded way of saying that sometimes something that doesn’t seem so great can later lead to something better.
And that hearing Pollock as Eggman makes me really happy.
Tumblr media
Also, he helped make moments like this even more worth it.
Thanks for sticking around and hearing me go on about a cartoon involving a tall, adorable scientist with a fantastic mustache- I mean a blue hedgehog. Next time I’ll try to pick something involving monsters, I promise.

Watched the Sonic Boom episode, “It Takes a Village to Defeat a Hedgehog”, dubbed in Japanese.(Granted, it was the Japanese audio dubbed over the English footage, but it’s more than good enough for me.)
It’s kind of weird hearing Eggman not being voiced by the late, Chikao Ōtsuka, but at the same time I got used to it quick since Boom!Eggman is very different from the Eggman in the game canon and Sonic X. Other than that, the Boom exclusive characters Japanese fit them or are what I expected.

Beginning in 1977, he was the second actor to portray Ishikawa Goemon XIII in Lupin the Third, a role which he continued until 2011. The most iconic cutscene of Sonic Lost World (Japanese)
I love Chikao Ōtsuka’s performance as Eggman. Even before I heard it, it was the type of voice I always envisioned Eggman having in my head. Not that I don’t like Mike Pollock or Deem Bristow or anything, they’re both incredibly fitting too.
