nate's come round enough that joe's gotten good at picking out the sincere comments from the full of shit ones. sometimes he likes to be ridiculous for the sake of it — moan over an itch he'll forget the following hour — but on occasion, once in a sensitive blue moon, he will mean every word. his heart will pour out of his chest like pungent gasoline, and nate will hate the admission more than anyone else privy to it. this time, joe's senses suggest this particular confession one of the latter. (the truth is in the details: the discomfort, the impatience, and the self-flagellation.) he's learned to adapt to both extremes, and it's highly convenient then that his cheeks hollow around a joint. he sucks it red, and with a shuddering sigh, holds the rest of it out for nate to pinch. "...c'mon now." there is no rolling set of eyes, no scoff nor condescending sigh — only a quiet look and an impending high. the words aren't alien anyway, they echo with unbearable reason. joe elbows him once more. "dunno. yer a'right sometimes."

joe, rightfully, scoffs at that. he'd caught glimpses of nate sucking their spend from his fingers, and the deviant headcase still has the fucking gall to threaten him for acting queer. he has half the mind to illuminate the drying saliva on nate's palm -- but the intention and impetus behind his defensive guard, is halfway reasonable. plus, there's nothing satisfying about being a snitch, less so when it involves a broadcast of joe's own predisposition. they can argue a kiss, fan away a grope, explain away an explicit rutting -- but their unravelling had been long, stacked with a myriad of sensations. they were just shy of fucking each other raw. he tucks himself back under his sweats, scrunching his nose when drying cum sticks to the inside of his thighs, and combs a dampened fringe from the flush on his face. frowning, joe adds, "isn't wrong to say we fought. we did. we've got -- some of the bruisin' to prove it 'nyway." then, as if remembering the altercation he had with -- jacobs sr. just a day prior -- he lifts a cleaner hand up to the corner of his jaw, skimming the discoloration he assumes exists along his features. he'll have another reddened mark across his neck by the morning. pausing in the sweep of his fingers, joe holds nate's grin with a cocked brow, drawling then with a joke of his own. "y' should let me clock ya on the cheek or somethin'. it'd be more convincin'."

his grip tightens incrementally, listening carefully for any sounds of distress or worse -- little breathing at all, restricting the flow of oxygen to make more blood rush down south. nate's just blown his load all over joe's thighs, but he was still so turned on he felt nauseous with it. he's beginning to understand what joe had meant by that. nausea shouldn't exist in such close proximity to desire, but it does. joe's been rigid underneath him and it's only now that he's been stroked and choked within an inch of his life that he finally relaxes, almost malleable and pliant in nate's grip. his eyebrows shoot up at that, dazed as he stumbles back and tucks himself back into his shorts, tugging denim back up muscular thighs before he absentmindedly licks the amalgamation of his and joe's spend off the pads of his fingertips. it's innocuous, like he's simply trying to get himself cleaned up. then, his eyes flit back over to the state of joe, adequately debauched and dishevelled, looking down at him between his lashes. "so, if we run across each other in public after this, what's the plan? you still gonna try to jump my shit? because if you tell anyone about this, and i don't think you will, i will paint you out as a crazy delusional closet case who dreamed this whole thing up," nate threatens, his gaze darkening once again like he's looking at a prey animal. he smirks, his countenance suddenly less severe now that he's gotten that off his chest. "off the record, though. what are we thinking? shared psychosis?" a light hearted joke to defuse the tension, for once at both their expense.

Saw some discussion about whether Joe or John is worse and it made me frustrated all over again that we don’t really know much about John’s history/backstory/motivations. And I know we’ll probably get some kind of attempt at explanation once he gets found out but I feel like I would be more interested in the character if I knew more about him.

People in this thread were comparing Joe and John and talking about how John at least feels remorse for the things he’s done and I was like…does he? I guess it’s sort of implied but I don’t know if it’s true remorse or just like oh I didn’t mean to kill Nate and then what does that mean for me. Or like, he feels bad about Harry, which I guess maybe but I feel nothing there because we see Harry once every two years and we have very little basis for John’s connection with Harry.

And like yeah, Joe is ruthless and out for himself and was gonna get that kidney no matter who got hurt in the process. But I also feel like I do believe he genuinely wants to connect with family. I mean his relationship with Dawn is shallow and I don’t know that I buy that he loves her. But based on how I know he grew up and having Chris as a father and not really getting as much love and attention from him and then his relationship with Debbie when he came back the first time, I can see how he would want something with someone like Dawn, how he does want a family in theory but he doesn’t really know what to do with one or how to maintain those relationships. And yes he could have just asked his blood relatives to donate a kidney but I can see where someone like Joe who wants to live at all cost, but also doesn’t know how to foster family connections and fears that familial rejection, would be afraid they were going to say no. And he can afford a shady private doctor so why not. Is it sensationalized nonsense that’s kind of cartoonishly evil? Sure, but I still feel like I can understand it a little from what I know about Joe as a character.

So then you have John who has a half assed backstory and they really haven’t had him talk much about what it was like growing up thinking Jack didn’t want him, how he might have been jealous of the family Jack did have without him, how finding out he adopted a kid too hurts him more. They sort of brushed over so much of that to throw him at Aaron and make him just be a cold weirdo at the start that I just have no real basis for his character other than…he’s Jack’s long lost son and okay that’s it. That and his army stuff but he keeps lying about Aiden and all that anyway so what is the truth.

And again, I’m sure they’ll try and tell us something when he gets found out but there’s no reason they couldn’t explore some of the Sugden connection feelings prior and build off of that to make it make sense, to give us a connection to this character based off of the existing show history. But no…let’s not do that.

I feel like if Robert had come back in 2014 with a hero complex to give him self worth instead of focusing on money and power and status to give him self worth, that would have made for a far more interesting version of this character type. Because I could understand how someone like Robert who always felt he wasn’t good enough or not needed and had low self worth, could get sort of drunk on the hero worship. Say after he gets sent away by Jack, he happens to save someone and he gets a taste of that adoration and then it fades and he misses it so he goes looking for ways to be in the right place at the right time and then he starts to set up situations to save people. Say he saved Lawrence and Chrissie at some point and they became indebted to him and then when they move to the village he you know, contrives to save Andy’s life to get him on side etc. And Robert Sugden becomes the hero of the village. And then you know falls in love with Aaron who doesn’t need him to save his life to love him and that makes all the difference but I digress.

I just feel like going in that direction with Robert could make a lot of sense because we would understand easily how his backstory/origins could have led to that without it being spelled out for us until later on.

I just wish they were better and building a character more naturally when it comes to John because I just feel nothing about him. He’s just so blah and I feel like I’m only really interested because he’s connected to all of the characters I like and I want to see what happens from a greater show perspective but not because I’m genuinely interested in John as a character in his own right. They haven’t given me enough to be.

The Winchester House, everything about it, and its entire relationship to Nate. 

The complex rules and magical constraints/potential of metaphysical contamination.

The set up for the church paradox. 

Cas, post fall, fever dream, almost dying locked in that cabin bedroom, the unnamed goddess calling him in spirit yet somehow physically into that Church.

Dean, post infection, fever dream, almost dying locked in that cabin bedroom, Cas accidentally calling him in spirit yet somehow physically into that Church. 

All of time and space converging. Dean is the impossible, he was never supposed to be in this universe, Cas accidentally binding them together with those sigils, allowing Cas to connect with Dean in the first place, and also making Dean invisible to Lucifer while he’s physically in that cabin, which he technically is, thus allowing him to shield Lia and thus her able to get him into that church where he and Cas manage to do something and erase the kids' (and both of their) minds. 

There is so much meat there, and every time you re-read there is more. There is so much cool foreshadowing with ALL the players involved, and I literally put together another thread in that during EVERY read-through. 

Someone once asked me my thoughts on what we know happened in the church and it got to 19 pages in google before I had to cut it off pending another re-read of book 4.

When did you first start reading it?

It’s hard to remember just because the last three years are a fuzzy mess, but I’m pretty sure I started reading it late 2021/early 2022. I am a fast reader so I demolished it VERY fast. 

When did you first realize how hooked you where with DtA? Was it from moment one? Was there a specific scene? 

After Cas and Dean started properly working together in book 1 I was pretty on board, but once they told Chuck and started their trips into Kansas City, that was when it really settled in and I knew I was about to read the entire thing.

If there could be a in-depth prequel written for any of the characters, who's past would you be the most interested in exploring?

Joe or Teresa. Honestly though I’d really like to see the case Dean worked down by the border. 

If you had to, what would you ranking be of the books?

This is a slim AF margin too, because they’re all so good. But I think it’d be 3,1,4,2 So “A Thousand Lights in Space” “Map of the World” “Game of God” “It’s the Stars That Lie” But it's real neck and neck for the last three.

How many times have you read it all the way through?

Books one and two I have read cover to cover 6 or 7 times, three I probably read a couple more. Book four I’ve actually only read completely cover to cover once, but I have read a lot of it out of order a couple more times. I’m trying to get my fics to a bit more of a stable point so I can re-read it again in case I go off the rails hyper-fixation on it again. I’ll probably read it twice in a row when I read it this next time.

Did reading DtA help inspire your own The End fic?

No, it hindered it greatly. The world building in DtA is very contrary to the plot I have for my endverse fic, and it took a while for my brain to reset and be like “Nope, this is what I’m doing, put that out of your mind.” If I hadn’t read DtA, you’d already have my Endverse fic, because I started writing it before reading that, and had to stop work for straight up like a year. 

What of the many burning questions currently unanswered do you want answered first?

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED INSIDE THE DAMN CHURCH!?!?!?

What's the most interesting non-SPN related fact that DtA taught you?

Graphene and everything about it.

If normal SPN team free will read/watch/found out about the DtA what do you think their reactions would be?

I think none of them would have any idea what to do with it. Cas would therefore not have much outward expression, Sam would be incredibly awkward and only a little insulted he isn’t in it, and Dean would be 10/10 defensive AF. 

What's a scene/interaction that still scratches the brain itch?

The Winchester Hou- Cas accidentally calling Dean when he’s using Allison as a conduit for the kids in Ichabod, and subsequently their interactions after Cas figures out what happened. 

Close seconds are Cas and Dean’s interaction after Dean gets bit in the courtyard, Cas searching Kansas City with his mind after Dean touched The Ick™. 

And yes actually the retelling of Nate’s interactions with The Winchester House.

Have you read The Forever King spin-off series? If so, what are your thoughts?

I have not read it yet, I must at some point. I know I’ll like it.

joe huffs, bemused and flushed with increasing want. "where else are ya supposed to come? — comin' into my palm n' stainin' these jeans o'yers suits ya anyway. suits someone desperate and easy like you." somewhere in between their heated texts, questionably public as they've grown, the exchanges developed, the preferences rather steep in their revealing. nate wanted joe to be cruel, to be rough and punishing and demanding. he wanted to be pushed around, wanted to be told to behave, to be chastised and scolded and controlled. he wanted to be kneaded into it, wanted joe to objectify him, to use him, and the weight of this confession had come up, sudden. except it was welcome, treated with careful gloved hands, and it helped — immensely — that joe understood violence better than he did anything else.

being calculatingly mean came easier than expected, and although he's wary of their physical differences, nate tricks him with the timbre of his whine. he's small like this, submissive and obedient and trusting like this.

" — s' that right? need t' be fucked until y' can't think? yer gonna come n' y' won't even realize it — y'know?" joe muses, blistered palm incessant even as nate continues to dribble, orgasm imminent. it's arousing in his hand, erotic in sight, and the promise of a delirious, messy spill, draws out grimier words, hypothetical scenarios fed largely to induce heated euphoria. "yer gonna feel so — consistently good — y' won't know yer comin' until you've come again — until i'm fillin' you up n' yer spittin' all over the sheet." he's muttering breathless now, fingers rolled into a fist as he pumps nate quick and thorough, wrings him to the weeping head.

his eyes flutter, the words dripping on his skin like warm candle wax, biting but comforting. nate is pliant in joe's hands, malleable and sweet, the way he was before everything that happened to him, back before he had a choice to be something other than just angry and hurt. joe is equal parts punishing and comforting, a desperate moan slipping out from around joe's prodding thumb when joe takes his cock in hand, shamelessly rolling his hips up to fuck his fist. he feels like he's already high, like he's popped a molly and wants to lay on his back like a cat in heat, and this was joe's natural chemical effect on nate. he's seen cassie absolutely fucking rolling on molly, re-enacting getting fucked as she rode the carousel, so nate's a little apprehensive on what he'd be like on poppers. nate places a large palm on the back of joe's neck, a gentle anchor as he leans in to kiss him with unexpected sweetness that quickly transforms into something a little desperate, a little messy. the amount of tenderness and consideration he's being given is surprising. nate's used to being in control in most situations, and when he doesn't, it's usually his dad calling the shots and controlling things. "yeah? i trust you," he breathes, dark gaze flitting to joe's mouth as they part and assessing the pretty shine he'd put on his lips, hips rutting up desperately into the tight heat of joe's hand with a choked-off moan. "you're gonna make me come in my fucking pants," nate complains with an incredulous little laugh, kissing him again and placing his other hand on joe's bicep as he pants into his mouth, nate's expression pinched and desperate. he's daydreaming about it already, unintentionally writing joe into his future. nate gasps when joe's ministrations become rougher, precome dribbling incessantly over pale slender fingers as he fucks up into the tight heat of his palm whilst gripping his bicep. "i want you to, ha, fuck me while high, i need it," nate admits, so lost in the building wave of pleasure he's unsure if he's saying he needs the drugs or he needs joe's cock but both are damning facts to face. nate's straight-edge for the most part, but he's apprehensive and scared shitless even though he wants this more than anything, but he trusts joe. against all odds, all logic, nate trusts him. if this is a mistake, they will only find out later when they're both laying on the side of a desolate road bleeding and curled up in the fetal position.

Earlier this week, John Burn-Murdoch of the Financial Times posted a thread that purported to show substantial losses for Democrats among non-white voters, which he termed a “racial realignment”. If you’re an election data junkie, you’ve probably seen it; it’s been viewed more than 7 million times on Twitter. Here is the graphic that kicked it off:

It’s worth reading the whole thread. There’s a lot of data, and Burn-Murdoch notes that the problems are particularly bad for Democrats among working-class voters of color, and younger ones. Many Black, Hispanic and Asian American voters have long identified as moderate or conservative rather than liberal, and Burn-Murdoch theorizes that Democrats’ tilt toward more liberal policies (though I’d prefer to call them “left” or “progressive” rather than “liberal”) is catching up with them, especially as memory of the Civil Rights Era fades.

The thread triggered its share of responses from the usual suspects, part of a recent pattern of poll denialism among Democrats that has crept its way into even the White House. And it’s true that there are some things you could critique. Burn-Murdoch is mixing and matching data from different polls, and the observation from 2024 is based solely on the recent New York Times / Siena College poll, which has a relatively small sample size; I’d rather that he’d have taken an average of different surveys.

If he’d done that, though, he’d likely have found the same thing. As you may know, I’m not much of a fan of digging into poll crosstabs. Because of the small sample sizes an

d difficulties in reaching certain underrepresented groups, you can always find something “wrong” with them and use that to dismiss polling results you don’t like. However, the Adam Carlson1 has been performing an invaluable service by aggregating the results of different polls together, which at least solves the sample size problem. And he’s finding that Joe Biden’s share of the vote has dropped dramatically among Black and Hispanic voters as compared with an average reliable estimates of the 2020 vote:

As you can see, Biden’s margin against Donald Trump has basically not moved an inch among white voters; he’s losing them by 12 percentage points, as he did in 2020. However, Biden is now only winning Hispanics by 7 percentage points — down from 24 points in 2020 — and Black voters by “only” 55 points, as compared with 83 points in 2020.

I’m not going to cover every possible difficulty when surveying non-white voters, who generally have lower response rates to polls than white voters do. I’m just saying this has been a consistent pattern; Carlson has been doing the same analysis for months now, and he’s been finding the same thing every time. So at the very least, Democrats can’t wish this problem away by complaining about small sample sizes, although that doesn’t mean they won’t try.

But polls, schmolls. Is it really plausible that there could be swings this large when it comes to actual votes?

Sure. It’s at least plausible. Let’s look at data from two places where non-white voters are plentiful. One is somewhere I’ve never been to, Starr County in South Texas, and the other is the place where I live, New York City.

Starr County is 98 percent Hispanic — the most of any county in the country outside of Puerto Rico — which makes it a uniquely valuable data point. There are no possible problems with ecological inference — misconstruing the behavior of individuals or particular subgroups from aggregate data — when basically everyone there is Hispanic. Starr County is also quite poor, in the Rio Grande Valley along the Mexican border, so it’s a particularly good place to look for patterns among working-class Hispanics. And what’s happening there ought to be frightening to Democrats. Here are the presidential election results in Starr County from 2008 through 2020:

I’ve charted these as the total number of votes rather than just the vote margin, because that’s really what tells the story. Biden received about as many votes in Starr County as Hillary Clinton did in 2016, or as Barack Obama did in 2008 or 2012. But Trump surged from receiving 2218 votes in 2016 to 8247 votes, almost four times as many, in 2020. I’ve rarely seen anything like that, especially in the contemporary American political landscape where partisan preferences tend to be relatively stable. Turnout was much higher in Starr County in 2020 — but those new voters came out overwhelmingly for Trump, contradicting the longstanding belief that Democrats benefit from higher turnout among minority groups. The shift of the Hispanic vote in South Texas has undermined Democrats’ dreams of turning Texas blue, or at least purple, offsetting gains that Democrats have made in the Houston, Dallas and Austin metro areas.

It’s not just a Trump thing, either. In 2022, Henry Cuellar, the Democratic congressman in Texas’s 28th congressional district which represents Starr County and others along the Mexican border, won by 13 points. That’s not bad, I guess. But Cueller had won the race by 19 points in 2020, and by 69 points in 2018 against a Libertarian candidate as Republicans hadn’t even bothered to contest the race. He won by 35 points in 2016, when Republicans did have a nominee.

Another place to find heavy concentrations of non-white voters is New York City. And here are the results there in presidential and gubernatorial elections since 2012 in the five boroughs as well as the three innermost suburban counties, Westchester County north of New York City on the mainland, and Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island:

The story here is somewhat more nuanced: Andrew Cuomo, the Democrats’ gubernatorial nominee in 2014 and 2018, was relatively popular in Long Island and in Staten Island, whereas the Republican gubernatorial nominee in 2022, Lee Zeldin, represented Eastern Long Island (mostly Suffolk County) in Congress.

But still, these trends are ominous for Democrats. In the Bronx, where less than 10 percent of the population is non-Hispanic white, Democrats went from winning the presidential race by 83 points in 2012 to winning the gubernatorial race by only 55 points in 2022, a 28-point swing. And there was a 29-point swing against Democrats in Queens — which is just 26 percent non-Hispanic white — between 2012 and 2022. Democrats’ results have been steadier in wealthier (although still relatively diverse) Manhattan, conversely, and in well-to-do Westchester County.

Nationwide trends aren’t this dramatic, although you see some of the same pattern. Modeling from Catalist, a Democratic firm, found that Democrats went from getting 97 percent of the two-party Black vote (that is, the vote excluding third parties) in 2012 to 90 percent in 2020. And they dropped from 70 percent of the Hispanic vote to 63 percent over the same period:

Democrats’ share of the Asian American vote had been steadier by comparison — but then it fell substantially in the 2022 midterms as compared with 2020, according to a Catalist analysis:

It’s worth pointing out that Black voters overall are still heavily Democratic. But going from 97 percent of the vote to 90 percent — not to mention 80 percent as more recent polls have found — is an enormous problem for the party. Democrats have become increasingly dependent on the votes of college graduates, but college grads are the minority — about 40 percent of people aged 25 and older have a bachelor’s degree or higher, and the share is no longer really increasing as the number of Americans attending college is leveling off, particularly among men. Without winning huge majorities of Black voters, and solid majorities of Hispanics and Asian Americans, Democrats’ electoral math doesn’t add up to a majority.

Let’s keep it to that, for now. Although Burn-Murdoch’s theory is plausible — that Democrats’ increasing progressivism and generational turnover is the root of the problem — that’s something that deserves a longer analysis. What he’s seeing in the data shouldn’t be dismissed as some kind of outlier, however. It’s been replicated in poll after poll, and it has become increasingly apparent in election results, too.

The S2 finale -- which would have been a perfectly good series finale -- left Nate Ford in the hands of law enforcement. And Portland had this perfectly good empty prison sitting there. So S3 started with an episode about Nate, in prison, discovering a cash-for-inmates scam.

"No, this one is real," I whispered back.

He stared at me.

"Except in real life, it was kids."

A beat, then in full voice, in a crowded theater, he exclaimed "IN AMERICA?!"

Yeah, man. Welcome to the country you don't know exists, in the dirty little corners of your shining city on the hill.

I don't think we changed his politics. But we opened up his world a little. So I'll take that win.

Meeting Andromache and Quỳnh had changed everything. It was then, and without much preamble, that they were told of the finitude of their shared ability. Before then, Nicolò and Yusuf had navigated the world as if they were untouchable, without much thought as to if or when their immortality could end. They were impenetrable, able to recover almost instantly from falls that should have rendered them pulp, wounds that should have drained their bodies of blood in mere minutes. So, soon after they had grappled with the fact that they were not the only ones in the world who shared this gift, to be told that their invincibility was finite had been a guttural shock. The only thing that had been more frightening was the knowledge that it could happen at any time.

It was before the science had been worked out. Before a name was put to the thousands of delicate, tenuous little things that threaded through the body, responsible for tactility and mobility.

They were battling in the snow, bitter cold and blinding, when Nicolò felt the bite. It did not feel like an arrowhead wound, as he’d grown accustomed to recognizing. It was sharper, deeper, as it buried itself into his back and the jolt crawled through each of his limbs, like fire ants.

The shock was quick, but it was excruciating. Almost as soon as the arrow had pierced his spine, he crumpled to the snow.

Andromache and Quỳnh were caught up in the spirit of the battle, moving fluidly in the space together, a single, perfectly orchestrated unit. Yusuf was nearby, as was where he belonged, but he hesitated and dodged an arrow that would have already been stopped in its path, were Nicolò at his side.

Yusuf was quickly becoming outnumbered and Nicolò pressed his palms into the snow underneath him, making to lift himself up, when he choked on the deep, jittery shock that shot up his spine and down his arms. They went lax underneath him.

The arrow was still in his back, he knew, but he could no longer feel it. Through a nauseating bloom of panic, he tried to move his legs, but found he could not feel them either.

“We have to keep moving, c’mon!” Yusuf’s breathless voice called from above.

Nicolò found he could not speak. His breath left him in moist little clouds, visible in the frigid air. Yusuf was still fighting on his own just ahead. Nicolò needed to be there, at his back where he was always meant to be, finishing off the targets as Yusuf weakened them.

His legs were not moving, so Nicolò dragged himself. He reached out, tried to pull his own weight, but his arms felt like pins and needles and would not support him.

Yusuf must have noticed, because he was by his side in a blink.

“My legs…” Nicolò grunted. “I cannot feel them.”

Yusuf said nothing, so he must have been touching him, checking him over, but Nicolò still felt nothing. The sting of panic crawled up his throat and the snow melted under his palms.

“Then I will carry you,” said Yusuf.

Nicolò was turned around and lifted then, and the arrow shifted next to his spine with the movement. He gasped as a new, sharper jitter of pain ran through him like lightning.

Yusuf was saying something to Andromache and Quỳnh, Nicolò surmised, because he had turned his head around in their direction. Nicolò had nearly gone deaf to the sound of the blood rushing in his ears.

“Yusuf,” he rasped. Yusuf held him close, tight, and began to walk, the snow slowing him as he sank deep with each step. With his own next words, Nicolò’s voice went quiet. “I am not healing.”

Yusuf kept his eyes ahead. “You are,” he assured. “You will. All will be well. What do you always tell me, my love?”

Nicolò had no words. He only gazed up at Yusuf, at the crusted blood on his forehead, the proud line of his chin, his warm, steady eyes.

“Believe yourself,” Yusuf urged, because he knew that Nicolò could not. “It is not our time yet.”

His words hit Nicolò like an avalanche and he wanted to close his eyes against the sudden burning in them. He didn’t. He kept them on Yusuf’s face. Nicolò had always said they shared a destiny. Like a breath and a heartbeat, they shared one life.

Yusuf looked down at him then, and as he smiled, Nicolò felt the sun’s warmth on his face, and almost, though he could have imagined it, on his legs. He curled in closer to Yusuf’s chest, resting his head on his shoulder, and Yusuf kissed his hair as he continued to walk them forward, away from the carnage.

He felt an odd jolt, a twinge, and Yusuf nudged at his brow with his nose.

“Nico, look.”

He did. Looked up at Yusuf’s beautiful face, then followed his gaze to his legs. He had to crane his neck slightly to see, but in moments, he could see his foot twitch.

He let his head fall back against Yusuf’s bicep, at the corner where it met his shoulder, relieved tears in his eyes, and he felt Yusuf lean in to kiss those tears before they fell. Beneath his knees, he could finally feel Yusuf’s grip, secure and safe and warm.

joe has a strong hand. he throws a hard punch, swings with all his weight and he does it fast. and when he's at the top of his game, buzzing with adrenaline, one strike is all it takes to knock any bastard cold. even the hum, the ache along his knuckles will come up pleasant -- thrilling -- a generous reminder of his independent vigour. except the scrappy redhead had been a thrashing fighter. the collision was grimey, dragged to the floor where joe wrestled, elbowed his way against insistent fists and a sudden blooming rage. he could've been looking for a brawl -- could've been tailing joe expecting him to have more than a tenner in his pocket. irregardless of intention, it morphed into a bloody slugfest. he gets the upperhand by way of a catching knuckle, cracking the redhead hard against the jaw, and tossing him blurry-eyed. and when joe rises, scraped and bruising and spitting something dark and red -- he nicks forty from the half-conscious figure, and runs. his legs tire out by a largely empty park, and he collapses, draping himself across the seat of a bench. from a distance, he probably looks half-dead. joe stirs from the peace and quiet, eyes squinting up at the face briefly silhouetted by the sun. christ. "ya stalkin' me now?" his lips are crusted with dried blood, a split lip -- among other things.

muse a is in college and decides to become a stri,pper at an elite club to pay for her tuition. the club is run by this m.afia boss, muse b, who’s enchanted with her from the get-go and the feeling was mutual. so for the next year, on every friday night, muse b books a private dance from her for two hours, and muse a who has only been comfortable giving them to him and no one else, starts to look forward to it every time. she knows he’s dangerous but he doesn’t scare her like he probably should and every week the tension becomes thicker and thicker… i think it would b very cool to develop this and see what could happen when they eventually hook up. muse b doesn’t want to bring her into his world, not wanting for her to get hurt but the heart wants what it wants. 😈*

a single dad x kindergarten teacher plot where his kid is in love with the teacher, always talking about them when they get home, making them pictures and always raising their hand in class being the best student they can be. the father finds this adorable because the kid is so whipped by this teacher he’s never met due to work and the fact his mother is always picking them up. so, parent teacher night finally comes and it’s time for them to meet. and the dad realizes the reasons why his kid is so whipped in the first place.

um, give me a plot where she used to be this s.exy, wild girl and had a bad boy boyfriend to match but when he turned eighteen he was caught for some cr.ime and sent to pris.on for a couple years. he came out fully expecting for her to be waiting for him but when he finds her she’s this prim and proper girl who is dating some pretentious ivy league di.ck. she pretends to be happy with her vanilla, boring relationship, but soon he wraps her up in his world again.

"yer not gon' get my money if ya can't contribute. doesn't work that way 'ere, a'right?" (joe's learned however, through word of mouth and passing advertisements, that the jacobs' household is never short on change anyway. his endeavours come with little benefit to nate, save for a promised thrill, a guaranteed rush, a rebellion — arguable company; company that he's already privy to. the selling point is mediocre, the reasoning for nate's involvement shaky at best. responsibility; some god awful blend of attraction and pity; boredom.) bent limbs and flattened palms eventually peel from purchase, and it is with gratefulness that his distant focus detracts from the intimacy. he's peeking from the narrow alley, furrowing his brows when the offending figures stalk out of view — hulking and tall and panicked. and although joe's heart hammers still, relief begins to trickle in, seep between his fingertips, make space for clarity. it is in these first few beats that he's reminded of their knocked knees, of nate's strangely comforting features. joe leans back onto his heel, embarrassed. typically, nate only gets this nervous before a big game, the anticipation tipping the scale to full-blown anxiety. but he feels as jittery as he does when he's downed a black coffee, his heart and mind racing because joe's been missing for 30 minutes since their scheduled meet up time. normally if joe couldn't make it he'd shoot nate a text and he'd bitch at joe for being a flake, so this change in routine has his hair standing on end. he thinks he's being irrational and overthinking things even as nate's going through the motions, his first knee-jerk reaction always to repress or deny anything he was feeling. learned behavior that's hard to unlearn. then -- all of his fears and worries are vindicated when an elbow collides with his sternum, knocking the breath out of his lungs and prompting him to grapple at joe's frame until he realizes what's happening, his back colliding with the familiar brickwall. "what the fuck?" nate whispers harshly, fingers gripping the worn fabric of joe's hoodie as he lets himself be eclipsed by his smaller frame, head whipping around to look at who was tailing joe. he purses his lips, front teeth digging into the flesh to bite back a disbelieving smile. "jesus fuckin' christ. you really have to find a hobby that's not mugging men twice your size. one we can still monetize," he chastises, keeping his voice low and quiet so they won't be noticed by joe's assailants, a dark and assessing eyes roaming over joe's features. nate clocks a bruise blooming on his cheekbone, and against his better judgement his hand lifts to swipe his thumb over it, his gaze inappropriately soft and fond for what the situation called for. the touch retreats just as fast as it arrives, scalding and damning, schooling his expression into something more passive. he had nothing to do with this. this feeling would fade, just like joe's bruise would transition from a pretty purple to a pale yellow. "you good?"

Happy National Poetry Month – the largest literary celebration in the world! 2021 marks 25 years since the Academy of American Poets launched National Poetry Month in April, 1996. The choice of April was inspired by the first line of T.S. Eliot’s “The Wasteland”: “April is the cruellest month…”

A lot of people are debating whether or not kpop idols should be speaking out about BLM and if black fans have a right to be angry if idols stay silent — which they do. As a white woman, I have no right or place to decide how these fans should feel or respond, but for those saying it doesn’t matter because kpop has nothing to do with BLM, let me give you a little history lesson on kpop and the genres of music it is heavily influenced by!

Korean pop music, gayo, or kpop, however you choose to refer to it as, can be traced back to 1885 when an American missionary began teaching American and British songs at schools. More western culture was introduced after the Korean War, when U.S. troops remained in South Korea. Modern kpop began to evolved in the 1990s when Korean pop musicals began to incorporate Europop and popular American music styles. It does have roots in traditional Korean music, however it is actually heavily influenced by western music and culture! Some of the biggest genres influences on kpop include rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, experimental, folk, country and classical music. 

For the sake of this, I’m going to predominantly be focusing on jazz, R&B, rock, and hop hip.

Jazz originated in black communities in New Orleans in the late 19th century and has origins in blues, ragtime, spirituals, classical, and West African music. The 1920s was known as the Jazz Age, and jazz is considered by many to be America’s classical music and one of America’s original art forms. It has many derivative forms, including free jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, smooth jazz, Latin and Afro-Cuban Jazz. New Orleans jazz specifically blends sounds from brass-band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime, and blues. Swing was also a very popular derivative of jazz in the 1930s with musicians like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Jimmie Lunceford, and Count Basie.

Rhythm and blues (R&B) developed in urban Black communities in the United States during the 1940s. Some of its stylistic origins are jazz, blues, spirituals, gospel, and boogie-woogie. Since the 1980s it shifted into a new style younger generations are currently most familiar with, referred to as contemporary R&B, which blends rhythm and blues with pop, soul, funk, disco, hip hop, and electronic music. Some of the most influential R&B artists are older artists like Prince, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Beyoncé, and Mariah Carey to newer artists like Rihanna, Ne-Yo, and The Weeknd.

Rock music originated in the United States in the late 1940s, and began as “rock and roll.” Rock and roll’s biggest influences are black musical genres, two of the biggest being blues and R&B. Blues originated in the Deep South in the 1870s from African musical traditions, spirituals, and African-American work songs (this is the white guilt way of saying what they actually are Slave Songs). Blues is arguably the most influential genre in modern western music as some of its derivative forms include rock, ragtime, R&B, jazz, and country. Some of the biggest rock and roll artists include Chuck Berry, Nat King Cole, the Crows, the Penguins, and the Turbans. Even Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock and Roll” would say some of his biggest influences were B. B. King, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, Ivory Joe Hunter, and Fats Domino, all Black musicians.

Finally, hip hop and rap music which developed by inner-city Black communities living in the Bronx, NYC, in the 1970s. Its origins are styles of funk, disco, electronic music, dub, R&B, reggae, dancehall, jazz, spoken and performance poetry, scat singing, and talking blues. Hip hop has four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching turntables (records), breakdancing, and graffiti writing. Due to poverty and lack of acceptance outside of ghetto neighborhoods, however, hip hop did not officially get recorded for radio or television until 1979. Hip hop has derived and has many subgenres since the 70s and now includes freestyle rap, gangsta rap, hardcore hip hop, mumble rap, trap, experimental hip hop, and more. Some major influential artists include Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, LL Cool J, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G., Lil Jon, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, B.o.B., Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper and so so so many more.

There is nothing you can say to tell me there isn’t Black influence on kpop. BTS had a whole multi-episode show where they travel to LA to train under “hip-hop tutors” Coolio, the artist behind Gangsta’s Paradise, and Warren G, a g-funk producer. Haechan calls Michael Jackson his favorite artist and inspiration. Almost all kpop groups have a rap line who “shockingly” LIKE BLACK RAPPERS AND ARTISTS. And it isn’t unheard of for kpop idols / groups to support and promote fundraising and campaigns. I’m not here to attack kpop, I’m here to explain why people can be upset by their silence.

While I am aware many of idols’ / groups’ accounts are not run personally or by their management, the silence and lack of support can hurt. I can understand why black fans want to see their idols they have been supporting support them too, especially when those idols have been, in a sense, profiting off of their culture. I can understand why black fans want their idols to support them not getting murdered in the street by police who are supposed to protect them. 

For anyone saying that “this is America’s problem” and “leave it to America to figure out,” World War II happened because Hitler was committing genocide on Jewish people and it took ALL of the Allies, not just anti-nazi Germans, to take down Hitler and the Axis powers. The police and the government are committing genocide on black people. Systematic racism is a disease that the world, not just America, needs to fight.

Silence doesn’t make you an ally, silence makes you an accomplice.
