Roo's Guide to Handling Haters

Disclaimer: Not telling you guys how to run your blogs. Just sharing some tips on how to deprive narcissists of supply and live your best life online.

You're gonna see a LOT of hate, lies, and bullshit over Are You Sure? It's already started.

And everyone has their own way of dealing with that--whether it's to take a step back from the internet, or get into a dog fight in the comments, or compose thoughtful essays deconstructing ideas. I'm not here to pressure you into any one particular strategy--your blog, your rules.

But I've been in various online fandoms for 25 years now, on tumblr for 14, in ARMY for three, and I do have some wisdom I can share, if you want it.

Here are my three tips:

De-platform

It's well past time Jikookers de-center Taekookers and antis from our spaces, our narratives--and our minds. They live in a separate reality, they do not debate in good faith, and they get vicious when they don't get their way.

Consider carefully if you want to repost, or reblog, or reply to anyone casting doubt, slinging insults, or spouting conspiracy theories, especially over the next few months.

Would you buy them ad space? No? Then don't give them an inch in your space. Quietly report and block.

Mocking them often feeds into their victim complex. Don't feed them anything. Don't bring trash in this house.

They get nothing. Nothing.

Co-opt

If you just can't completely ignore or remove them, then don't waste precious energy arguing every little point with them. Their goal is to sap your energy.

Take a page out of an aikido self-defense handbook and use their own momentum against them.

Attacks are now an opportunity to spam the shit out of that hateful post with loving hashtags and links to playlists and fundraisers.

They just gave us free promo; go full-tilt Wunseidel on their asses.

En-joy

The best revenge is to live well.

Deeply, deeply enjoy and savor the content you do want to see. Leave no crumbs. Smack your lips and hum in satisfaction with every delicious bite.

The Jikook tag should be one big non-stop party-party-yeah extravaganza from now until well past September 19th.

Antis should be just sick to death of trying to come online for fear of seeing people ecstatically celebrating everything we get, and totally ignoring the ruiners.

Our boys are happy. They want us to be happy for them. So be happy.

Do. NOT. let the ruiners. RUIN it.

Above all, don't become the kind of fan that Jimin or Jungkook would be ashamed of.

You don't have to defend or resist a damned thing.

They shared all these amazing moments with us, and that is the best testament to the truth there is. So sit back, relax, enjoy.

Opinion on crosstagging?

I've seen it happen in aesthetic spaces (e.g. people tagging a cottagcore post with #cottagcore but also #kidcore #lovecore #darkacademia)

I've also seen people with 'boost' posts tagged tumblr's popular tags like #supernatural and #mcu.

Recently, I've started noticing it from indie creators' accounts. They'll post a media promotion post and tag it with their media's name and media type (e.g. Podcast, webcomics), but also the name of any more popular indie media. As you can imagine, it gets a little difficult to find fan content of your niche indie media when every other post is an ad for something else. Why do they do this?

Boosting in the big tags - Horrid. Don't do it.

Polluting a tiny indie media tag with your self promo - Fuck you. Leave tumblr at once.

Crosstagging your #goblincore with #cottagecore and #dark academia - This shit overlaps anyway. Tag whatever seems relevant.

My level of irritation is directly related to how much it seems like they're making a mess of search results vs. being helpful to the viewer. I know they want attention, but the more I feel like the viewer is going to go "Oh wow! I'm so glad you told me X existed!", the better the tagging is.

General aesthetic terms aren't owned by anybody and have fairly murky definitions. If you're tagging your goth shit as "sweet lolita", you're a liar and should stop that, but plenty of these terms, especially the newer ones, overlap like crazy. And a lot of words like 'gothic' could be goth subculture shit or someone's blog on cathedral architecture or literary tropes. Tumblr's design means that we do automatically step on each other's toes in some tags.

(TBH, the shit I like is basically the overlap between cottagecore and dark academia, so...)

It's not really the focus of this book, but I'd be a poor editor if I didn't at least bring it up. I promise you don't have to cut your draft to shreds during revision—most of your scenes can and should be salvaged!

I'm sorry, there's really nothing I can do about this one. The spacing is a little messy and it looks like there was a find/replace fiasco during proofreading, which I had no control over. I've already cried about it a lot so please be nice to me.

Question but do you have any streaming tips for beginners or know any good videos that'd help someone learn how to do so? I'm trying to audition for something and would like to know if you had any tips! Have a good day tho!!

I have some ideas, they’re mostly Twitch-based though so some might not apply for other sites. Unfortunately I mostly play by ear when it comes to streaming. I don’t know how to specifically help with whatever this audition is but hey

EDIT: added a read-more; I answered on mobile and didn’t notice how long the answer got

I’d say one of the best things to focus on is audio quality as that may make or break if someone wants to keep watching a stream imo (aside from just chat engagement or general interest)

You don’t need to get fancy expensive microphones, just a decent one. Balance volume, and filters like gain, noise suppression, and noise gate to limit background noise but be heard clearly.

Eventually I want to do this too but you can try making whatever room you’re in have better acoustics. You shouldn’t need expensive acoustic foam, there’s other DIY alternatives out there that I haven’t fully looked into yet.

Unless you want to go for the aesthetics and can afford it then I can’t really stop you.

(And maybe you actually have furniture in your room that breaks down sound better than my barren echoing living space)

Uhhh promos and all that. Tumblr has a function to play Twitch streams live if you put the link as a video post, which is one way to grab some viewers. Don’t feel too discouraged if the spike of viewers comes and goes. And don’t feel bad about self-promo because people wouldn’t know they can watch you if you never say anything about it

Having a friend around doesn’t hurt. Mine have helped with feedback on stream quality, and general levity

Don’t feel like you need to put on a boisterous entertainment persona as that might get draining; it may take a while to find a comfortable streaming mindset but you’ll get there

Be sure to check your moderation settings, especially auto-mod if you don’t have someone to moderate for you. Consider things like nightbot or streamlabs cloudbot for further moderation and custom commands. Take advantage of Twitch extensions; some give chat more to do and look at

If you want to be more personable to an audience, encourage conversation when you can. Like asking questions back and bringing up discussion topics. (be mindful of parasocial relationships though, both ways. how often chat talks doesn’t define your worth)

Something something, eye-catching overlays but not being too crowded to watch

I’m sure there’s other ways to improve quality like bitrate, fps, internet connection (ethernet is most recommend), but I can’t think of anything else specific at the moment, or it depends on your programs and specs.

It took me about a year before getting into a comfortable groove so pretty much don’t give up and try to have fun with it

If anyone else knows any good videos or other tips for this anon, leave a comment or something. I know I’m definitely forgetting a couple quick tips I would’ve answered a different time.

i will never fucking forgive the community on this site for the years of “ace discourse”. we were being actively hated for our orientations and everyone just treated it like a fucking debate topic or fucking mocked us for being effected by it. it became such a widespread thing to laugh at that even people who were otherwise okay with us were reblogging aphobic memes and getting mad that we “couldn’t take a joke” when we were upset by it.

and today, people who got swept up in aphobic movements look back at that time like “haha, i was such a cringe teen for participating in ace discourse” rather than “i was shitty and bigotted and i sincerely regret it”; a lot of them probably still ARE aphobic but just don’t talk about it anymore because it’s no longer trendy.
