Thinking about where the line between lies and storytelling sits with Garak. How trauma (especially childhood trauma) forces you to morph your life into stories to tell the truth when the facts are too all encompassing and terrible for you to face.

Thinking about the queerness inherent to Garak and Bashir's book club. The way they interrogate the subtext of their books the way only queer people can, when the realities of our lives are rendered unspeakable by homophobia.

The way they dance around each other, creating a hidden story within the story - the truth of their relationship too large and unforgivable. Queer repression as text becoming repression subtext. An ouroboros of enforced shame. It remains hidden but in doing so, reveals some new truth. Neither knows who they are without the obfuscation they have worn for so long that it has become their face.

The Quickening is such an interesting episode.

Like, the fact Julian is completely unable to comprehend euthanasia for an incurable disease as a kindness.

The fact that despite the fact he’s a doctor whose been through medical school he was Wholly unprepared to lose even One patient while Creating and Experimenting with a cure.

He really thought he’d get it right on the first go and save everyone.

And I think that a result of life with augmentation. While he might know the devastatingly slow process of drug testing he assumes he is exempt from that. Because he’s smarter and faster that he won’t make that “mistake”.

He has a fundamental misunderstanding of science. Because rather then the cruel reality of it being trial and error, to him, it’s something he usually gets it right in the first try.

So far in ds9, once a problem is identified, he finds a way to fix it. The issue is never the solution it’s diagnosing the problem.

Which leaves him complete unprepared for reality. You can’t save everyone. You don’t always get it 100% correct on the first time. Common sense for most people. But not for Julian Bashir. One failure, and he’s ready to give up.

He’s not used to not getting figuring it out fast enough. In fact, his problem is usually he gets there too fast and has to hide it.

He isn’t used to failing when it isn’t on purpose. Especially not in medicine.

It’s why he has no sympathy for a man providing kindness because he views it as giving up.

Because if it had been him he would have solved the problem by now.

Only, it isn’t that simple. And when people inevitably die. Something a normal doctor would have expected, Julian Bashir is completely defenseless.

He cannot face the truth.

He’s never had to before.

I love the different ways Julian will look at Garak because sometimes he looks at him with the exasperation of a long-suffering husband of 20 years and other times he looks at him like Garak painted the night sky and hung the stars and the moon and you can see him falling in love all over again

and I love the way Garak looks at Julian cause sometimes he looks at him like he literally wants to eat him alive and other times he looks at Julian like he is the most precious thing in the known universe and you know that he genuinely believes that that's exactly what Julian is

I am developing such a deep understanding and sympathy for garak, honestly. It's only been a couple of weeks, but already so much of my mental and emotional well-being is wrapped up in getting to see Julian Bashir's little face Do Things on a regular basis. I can't even imagine what 7+ years of that could do to a motherfucker

shout out to the very distinct feeling of 'oh god i'm going to become at least mildly annoying about this aren't i'. binging ds9 season 1 and i outright giggled at a very small mannerism julian did. got hyped when o'brien showed up. grinned widely at kira just Being There. felt the urge to yell and cheer and scream at the slightest hint of whump. the character dynamics and friendships are beginning to interweave like strings in a tapestry and i almost detonated upon realising this. uh oh.
