Last night there was a very slight rain. It stopped as soon it touched the ground. Maybe it was just crossing by to remind us about it, or maybe it just felt lonely. But as soon as the first drop laid down on the soil, passing through a horde of almost dry grass, it left the smell of it to us. Just enough so that we don't forget it, just so less that we crave it. But that slightest of a moment brought back hundreds, thousands of memories even. A rush of millions of different feelings at once. The time I watched the rain from my grade two classroom, hoping for it to stop, so that I can go play. I drew lots of pictures of a bright shining Sun, as I believed doing so let's the bright star know that I want it to come back and take away the rain. It brought back the memory of the day my grandma passed away at the hospital. To pay her respect, the clouds showered upon the earth, giving her life to the earth. It's not a great feeling, if you remember bits and parts about her but you regret that you never really tried to have a real connection with someone so close to you. It also brought back the nights I stayed up to pray that my father gets well and comes back home soon. But it also brought back the feeling of going to a beach for the first time with my family. It also brings back the Diwali of that year when there was a heavy downpour and I couldn't go out to see the fireworks, but my mother made all kinds of sweets and snacks, and my family was there. I didn't get to see the fireworks, but I am sure it felt complete to me. I also remember the days when the cyclone hit Chennai and the communication was down for weeks. I wrote letters to you in my diary, I would sometimes even charge my phone to take pictures so that you don't miss anything important. And I couldn't wait to tell you about my day. I wipe away a tear on my cheek, let out a sigh and then smile. Although it didn't rain last night, one instant I was just taking a whiff of the petrichor.
