Greetings from a cloudy Bar sur Aube, where it’s 7c at the moment. We are due a maximum of 10c so it’s not going to be that much warmer. Anie messaged on Sunday afternoon to say could she come visit me, of course, I produced mince pies and coffee cake along with one of the new teas Monique had bought me for Xmas. She stayed for about an hour, it was enough really, I am finding it hard to concentrate on hearing French for longer than that. She always brings some gift and this time it was a small jar of the herb sariette and a jar of marmalade. I baked a batch of cheese scones yesterday, I added some sariette and herbes de Provence, they were really lovely.

Monique has been in touch keeping me up to date with her blood tests, appointments etc.

My fortnightly blood test was due and the nurse arrived promptly. The results are not coming back as quickly as previously but perhaps it’s the tests requested that make the results arrive later.

The plumber came to install the new boiler, amazing all finished in 3.5 hours! Oh the luxury have having lovely hot water “on tap”. You don’t miss something until it is taken away from you.

My grandchildren are with “The Photographer” this weekend and then it’s “the big adventure”, they are going to London from Monday to Thursday to go to the Zoo and the Natural History museum.

So today was the day I had been looking forward to, the day of the visit to the gorgeous “La Belvedere” restaurant for lunch. It was the knitting group on Friday and I must say we were a little depleted! The 92/93 year old lady is suffering with her back so was unable to attend. We were discussing the best things to make to sell at the markets. It was suggested that we tried key fobs, I produced a pattern for some pendants and earrings and will photocopy the pattern to take back in a fortnight. It has been decided that from now on a receipt needs to be produced to show the cost of materials, I guess that puts paid to a refund for me, as the wool I have had for years, so no longer have the receipt. Random Sunday thoughts.

Even though I post on here almost every day, it feels like forever since I’ve posted about actual personal things.

Minerva sometimes will jump on my leg. Like she’s attacking me. I’m like, girl, I’ll play with you but keep your claws to yourself!

If Jonas’s next clear word is “gentle”, it wouldn’t be a surprise. We say it 800 times daily. He loves Minerva but…toddler and kitten 😳

Oh, and both of them climb everything. I might as well let my hair go all grey. Although I looked in the mirror today and thought I needed it highlighted again because otherwise I look 50. Sheesh. Like getting older? Fine. I can live with that. But I look way older than I feel. Does that make sense?

My in-laws were here a couple weeks ago. It was a good visit. They were here during the last gasp of Indian summer (is that still a phrase that’s used?) - like clear blue skies, 60s and 70 degree weather. My father-in-law (my Other Dad; I love him) did various projects, like installing a cat door. He and I raked up the trillion leaves that were piled up.

On the afternoon before they left, Mister, Dad and I took Jonas to a local lake. There’s a little beach there and a fantastic playground. Jonas waded right into the water (even though it was cold 🥶) and had a blast just digging in the sand. He loved the playground, too. We’re going to have to take him back there.

We enjoyed the 70 degree afternoon on the beach just in time…the next day, the 11th, my in-laws left and it was colder and windy. We woke up early on the 12th to see several inches of snow on the ground. From 70 degrees at 5 pm on Thursday to just after 5 am on Saturday with 20 degrees and snow!! 😱❄️ I’m sure others have had bigger weather swings but nobody here expected snow on November 12th. Not surprisingly, it’s still autumn here but it’s felt like winter for the last week. Which is okay because…

Thanksgiving. 🥐🦃

We’re staying home for Thanksgiving for the first time since we were DATING. Like the last time it was *just us* (well, before Jonas and Minerva the Crazy Cat), it was 2011. That year Mister and I celebrated Thanksgiving at his tiny apartment in Chicago and drove around to several grocery stores on the day (to find an open one) because we’d forgotten to get a pie.

I am ridiculously excited to stay home. It’s about having our own traditions, not just going along with other people’s. I’m going to attempt to bake the crescent rolls my mom’s made for years, and a low sugar apple crisp for dessert. Beyond that, the turkey breast is going into the crockpot, mashed potatoes are on the menu because of course, and there’s green beans that I haven’t decided how to cook yet. It’s not eleventy side dishes but I only really wanted to make the rolls and neither of us want to have a ton to do on the day. The turkey breast is big enough to have leftovers, so there’s going to be plenty of food regardless. Choir is singing on Thanksgiving so as soon as I get home from that mid-morning, I’ll probably just wear pajamas the rest of the day 😂❤️

Mister has been working crazy hours. He’s got an extra class he’s teaching this year (5/6th grade religion) and a bigger 7/8th grade class than last year. Plus finding time to do administrative work. He usually leaves the house around 6 am, gets home about 4:30 or 5, then goes back to school after Jonas is in bed. I’m worried about him burning the candle at both ends but there’s not really a solution other than him getting a sub a couple times a month just so he can keep up with grading. And his class this year is just…not a good one. Like there’s no behavioral issues but the kids just aren’t motivated to do anything other than the bare minimum. He asks questions to get a discussion going, and there’s crickets. The only thing most of the junior high kids (and others) seem to care about is sports. They’ll get the grades to pass, but…there’s no “I want more in my life”. We don’t know if it’s just a rural area thing for kids to not be motivated, if it’s this particular area, or just this group of kids. Mister has heard repeatedly that the kids 3-4 years younger are a lot more engaged, but honestly I wonder what they’ll be like by 7th grade.

All that to say that Mister is not having a good year. After 20 years teaching, he knows how to get kids engaged and interacting, but “talking to these kids is like talking to a brick wall”. And the result of this is we’re actually talking about moving. Again. Maybe next year, or the year after, depending on what other job comes along. He (and I) aren’t super impressed by the kindergarten teacher here and the 1st/2nd grade teacher has been here for decades and is just not what we want for Jonas. She’s stuck in her ways and will NOT change. Beyond that, there’s fewer opportunities here (I won’t say none, because that’s not true) but the sports-mad culture here puts us both off. Like if Jonas loves/is good at sports when he’s older, great - but if not?

Argh, now I’ve written a novel. Sorry. Anyway, if you’re in the US have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving; if you’re from farther away, have a great week and take care of yourself 😊

we went on another adventure (May 23) 🤩

i wanted to hang out with my friend again but of course i had NO IDEA where to go so i asked my sister for ideas XD i eventually picked out four places to go to :)

i picked him up around 9:30am and after using the freeway, i wanted to take a longer to get to the city where we were gonna hang out using the back roads. i ended up going too fast taking the turn off the ramp from the freeway and when the car settled down, i couldn't stop laughing even as i kept driving 🤣🤣🤣

the first place we went to was a lil hiking place with a couple of trails. we walked around the place for about an hour, i also kept stumbling everywhere 💀💀 later when were reminiscing about today's events, he was like "results of no breakfast 💀" which is true lolllll we also found a really creepy lake/pond… it looked like the waters were black and it was very reflective of the logs that were sticking out of the water. it gave me goosebumps

the second place we went to was a busy street that was near the ferries. there were a couple of shops and restaurants and we just walked around window shopping basically. we stopped by the bakery and got some pastries 😋 I got two cookies and a muffin and my friend got a french roll and chocolate cake

we had to put our pastries in my car bc we couldn't bring them into the restaurant we were gonna eat at. the place i chose was a pizza/pasta place. the food looked soooo goooood. we ended up sharing a wood-fire pizza with marinara, cheese, basil, prosciutto, and olive oil 🤤🤤🤤🤤 SO GOOD. it was kinda weird cutting the pizza, we were given pizza scissors(?) LOL

after we ate, our waiter asked if we wanted any coffee or desserts, and it looked like my friend was all good, but i ended up ordering a tiramisu 😂 the waiter gave us two spoons, and the cake was only on one plate… 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 yeah we ended up sharing and i ended up eating the last few bites bc he got full, but man was i embarrassed 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 at first when we both took the first bites, he wasn't sure if there were almonds or something bc he's allergic, but it was all good. I panicked for a second 😩

the last place we looked around was the art museum that was free to the public. the first floor was my favorite. it was called "Incarcerated Americans" and it was detailing the events that occurred regarding the Japanese Americans who were sent to concentration camps in the US. It was sad to read, but I was grateful I got to learn more about it.

the second floor had a lot of paper arts and needle-and-thread arts, i thought that was pretty neat!

that's all i really planned on doing and i was super tired afterwards XD i didn't even go fast on the freeways i was that tired LOL

we spent like 7 hours together, it was a lotta fun :3

he also gave me matcha kit kat. recently we were talking about how there's a bunch of different kit kats and really expensive, too for just like 12 of em. and he also picked up a milk tea bc i was saying it's one of my favorite drinks XD

Bonjour et bienvenue from Bar-sur-Aube where the weather is cloudy and 10c. The house is now back to the quiet place it was before, not that it was rowdy when my family were here but a girl of 4 years can chatter incessantly and I found myself worn out with having to think and talk so much. We spent a lovely time at Easter and it is a distant memory but my life here goes on and as always I keep myself busy.

Last Sunday, my new friend Maud, picked me up at 11:45 and drove me to a fantastic restaurant overlooking one of the lakes. It was a bitterly cold day so we hurried inside. I had already seen the menu online so had an idea of what I was going to eat, I was not disappointed “filet de bar” was delicious and we both chose strawberry and rhubarb crumble for dessert. It was amazing how we sat and chatted for over three hours, then took a walk alongside the lake, before returning “chez moi” for tea and cake. She left at 20:05 and I, for one, had had a wonderful day.

The remainder of the week saw me cutting grass, overseeding the grass (or as it may turn out, just feeding the birds), sorting out strawberry plants,raspberry canes (yes new shoots have appeared) I have added new compost with feed and am hoping for a bumper crop this year 😉. I planted peas, rocket, radish, lettuce and beetroot, the rocket and some radish are poking through 😳, the broad beans are coming on too. Three tomato plants have been potted up and as always I am hoping for great things. The gardens are full of colour from the tulips, daffodils, primroses, violas and cowslips (which are now appearing in the grass). I know I must sound boring, but it is these little things that bring so much pleasure into my life.

I had been to my knitting group with the French ladies, I am looking forward to the BBQ and also to the “fete” at a village outside town, where some of my knitted items will be on display and for sale. I am busy stitching up at the moment (the job I hate) I think that if I get the items all finished off I will enjoy whatever I knit or crochet next. I return to knitting with the refugees this coming week, on a different day, but hopefully my ladies will be available.

I am having the mega video call this afternoon, with my friends in Bristol, we will be discussing my upcoming visit to the UK. In the almost 60 years since Star Trek was first aired, I really do wish someone had found the way to “beam me up, Scottie” it would make travelling so much more fun 😂. I think it will be aeroplane one way and train the other, the thought raises my stress levels (which is not good for the old “ticker”). Anyway more on that in the next few weeks.

The “Trainee Solicitor” moved into his new home on Friday. When I say moved, I use the word lightly, as it is a bit like camping……. He is hoping that his furniture (stored at his father”’s house) will be delivered soon 🤔. I have to admit the house is absolutely beautiful. There are still jobs to be done but what has been done is stunning. He had a decorator in painting the staircase and he noticed that the second bedroom had no carpet on the floor. He said that he had a piece of carpet which he felt would be big enough for the room, it had been laid previously but was in very good condition, I think he is bringing it over today 😊.
