How people are trying to change fandom (the rise of hatred against non-canon media)

This was inspired by the rise of backlash against the "Rhysta" ship.

Traditionally throughout the history of fandom spaces on social media, a very important factor has been creativity of course. Art and Fics by fans being the backbone of a fandom. Including non-canon ships, Aus, etc. And of course there was drama (when is there not drama?) BUT there wasn't as much hate because there was an understanding that it's not REAL. People in fandoms understood creativity and thinking outside the box (canon)

But something interesting happened in 2020 with the pandemic, people who weren't apart of fandom spaces started joining cause what else were you going to do? but there started the divide. These people wouldn't have joined fandoms originally because they didn't have that sort of creativity. Which isn't a bad or negative thing, everyone is different and that what makes the world go around, but these people were not used to fandom spaces and that divergency. To them, things have to be how it was written and non-canon things, ships or au's that can't hurt you or become canon, were blasphemous. Because why change the foundation if you liked the original media? this also ties into the "why do you read or interact with this media?" questions when people engage with media in their own way even if they dislike the majority of it. which is valid to do, I do it personally with acotar. I dislike the majority of acotar from the way it's written to lots of the characters, but I interact with a certain subset of the fandom that shares a love for the same characters as I.

But these people, these mostly neurotypical, TikTok people, intrude into these safe creative spaces and cause a ruckus over non-canon Aus and ships. for no reason! Ships like Rhysta are harmless, of course people who make and consume this media don't think it's going to be real, and that's the misconception! Making and consuming non-canon media doesn't mean you think it's going to happen or want it to happen, it's just existing. existing for the sake of existing and stretching creative muscles. You can't grow as an artist if you do not break from the mold, from the restraints of canon.

What you are doing by constantly harassing and posting shit about non-canon media is showing you lack a fundamental understanding of Fandom. Policing what people do is a fruitless endeavor. of course, calling out actually problematic creators is okay, when what they're doing is actually harmful and not them being creative or God forbid, a little weird.

There has been and still needs to be respect in the places. Filtering tags for things that upset you and blocking creators you disagree with is key to being someone people will actually listen to and respect. If you refuse to do that, no one you harass, or attack will take you seriously. and maybe that's not your objective but that means you're going to be blocked on main and made fun of. And this segment is somewhat targeted at someone who has been consistently harassing my mutuals, but I've seen so many people like this and it's a real issue. And its such an issue in Booktok popular books and shows, and media that becomes popular with the masses.

Fandom spaces aren't meant to follow canon to a T. People will have non-canon ships, opinions on how they think the series should have gone, opinions on characters, etc. Constantly harassing and targeting creators won't change that.

I know this won't stop this behavior, it will continue to happen but it's been bothering me and maybe this will change some people's minds on how they interact with the media they like, and they hate.

I love rhysta, I think that the dynamic is very interesting and that people are free to explore that and say whatever they want about how it could have gone in canon. None of that means i think its going to happen or that it should. Lord, people are just having fun. Like they should in fandom places.

When a fandom is small, usually I don't mind seeing other OC ships with my favorite characters! (pls I need more Needy Streamer Overload content) But in the past few years I've seen my friends get harassed by other yumes/selfshippers with the same oshi as them and ever since then I've been more careful with whom I interact with.

I heard that DL has a big problem with jealous selfshippers attacking others. Please don't take it personally if I don't feel comfortable interacting with non-sharing yumes (of any diaboy) or other Tsukinami x OC shippers. I tend to block them because I've had my own bad experiences dealing with harassment in the past of other jealous non-sharing yumes.

Usually, I don't judge too early, and I do have friends who are respectful non-sharing yumes or doubles, but as soon as I get bad vibes from someone, I avoid them.

This is also another reason why I limit interactions with fandoms or stopped entirely like disabling DMs and my ask box (it has been disabled since last year). Mutuals and friends are always free to talk to me though!

Will I enable them again? That's unknown. For now, I just want to have fun and keep interactions with non-mutuals to a minimum.

You pull up to your mansion the following day after having your rendezvous with your ex-husband. There was just something about being with Jongin that somehow you still can't shake.

You turn your Corvette engine off and sit against the cool leather seat. You already know you will hear an earful from Taemin and Ten about not coming home last night.

Your eyes trail over to your beautiful mansion that once belonged to you and your ex-husband. You remember the day you two moved into your dream home.

Your fingers delicately caress the cool leather of your seat, and memories of last night's escapades are brought to your attention. You missed Jongin's taste and how he likes to call you daddy.

You mutually agreed that last night was just a one-time thing. You want to believe you can behave and hold yourself to that promise.

"I'm home," you shout into your beautiful mansion, and walk into the living room.

The vast living room is bathed in a soft golden hue. Ten and Taemin sit comfortably on the plush, velvety couches, and magazines cover the deep mahogany coffee table in front of them.

Taemin and Ten are engrossed in their own worlds, and they lift their gazes to meet yours.

You quickly notice the intensity in Taemin's eyes, and Ten's display a bit of curiosity. Because why are you dressed in another man's clothes and strolling into the mansion as if nothing happened?

"Long night?" Ten jokes, and breaks the silence among the three of you.

"Uh, you could say that," you reply, trying your best not to sound guilty or obvious that you were with your ex-husband.

"So, where have you been?" Taemin questions you, and his sharp gaze is unwavering.

Taemin is still in his pajamas and has a bowl of cereal in his hand.

Ten is on the other side of and his cute Louie is on his lap.

"Out," you reply. You plop down on the couch across from them.

"You smell like Jongin. Is this what you're doing now?" Taemin adds.

"So, he's taking my spot in more ways than one? I mean, he did walk out on you, so now you've forgiven him like nothing happened?" Taemin presses you.

Taemin isn't wrong in his claims. Things were rocky when Jongin decided he wasn't going to dance at No Manners anymore.

He was your top dancer for over seven years. So, the day he decided he was done dancing was also the day he was done being your husband.

The divorce wasn't messy, and he didn't ask for money. Nor, did he even ask for the house. He respected you and your business to a certain extent. He just wanted more for himself, but it just felt too personal.

"It was a business decision. It's my club, and I can do whatever I want," You insist, and stand firm on the decision that you made with a clear mind.

"So fucking him is a business decision?" Ten vocalizes, and his concern catches you by surprise.

The room seems to close in. You and Taemin are very strongly opinionated. So, you find yourself bumping heads with him pretty often. But, Ten being upset is surprising you.

Why is Taemin pressing you so hard? Sure, you made a selfish decision, but you aren't exactly dating Taemin or Ten. There isn't a label placed on whatever this arrangement is. All you know is that it has worked for the last couple of months.

"That's not what I mean. I mean him being the current headliner is a business decision," you explain.

"Yeah, but he doesn't like working sets with other dancers. Jongin is selfish," Ten further adds to the conversation.

Usually, he isn't the type to get involved in your disagreements with Taemin.

"He doesn't have to work sets with when he's the headliner," you defend Jongin.

"So, are you two getting back together? What does that mean for me and Ten?" Taemin asks.

You are not in the mood for the third-degree this morning. Your mind is still stuck on Jongin bouncing that ass on your strap. You still can't get over how he made you come with his tongue.

You would be lying to yourself if you said you didn't miss being with Jongin.

You decide this is a little too much for you to deal with right now. You stand up and grab your Gucci bag.

"No one said that. I'm going to shower."

You leave the two of them and head upstairs to your bedroom to retrieve for some solitude. Sure, you could try to explain you still have feelings for your ex-husband.

Not to mention, you did tell Jongin that you loved him last night. Whether it was because of the euphoric feeling you felt dominating him, or you meant it. You told him, and he told you, too.

The dim chandeliers cast their opalescent glow across the club, their muted purples and deep blues adding to the quiet allure of the place. It's like stepping into a different world, one that's intimate, seductive, and hushed.

Your feet echo softly against the black marble floor. The main stage stands like an altar. It's where the magic happens. The poles, with their smooth, cool chrome, rise from the stage, reaching up to the ceiling. You can almost hear the faint, ghostly echo of past performances, the cheers, the gasps, the music.

Jongin removes his shoes and jacket to reveal he's not wearing a shirt. Your eyes stare at his chiseled six-pack. He steps out of his pants to show what's underneath. His tiny shorts interestingly catch the light, amplifying the sculpted form of his ass, making it seem like an artwork on display.

You break your attention from his body and ask, "What do you want to practice?"

"Umm, just pole tricks. I was a bit rusty last night."

He's doing all the usual tricks, and you aren't sure why he thinks he needs to practice. Watching him work the pole is an art form. He makes the shit looks easy and flawless, but you know that it's not simple.

No one is as talented as Kim Jongin when it comes to male strippers. You've searched high and low to find someone to replace him, but no one is as fluid as him. Taemin comes close, but there's just something unique that Jongin brings to the table.

Jongin drops down and hops off the stage. You grab his phone and pause the music.

"You good?" you ask.

"It's noticeable."

Jongin wants to continue to work on dancing in heels and turns the playlist back on. You sit back and enjoy the show. He's captivating, and you know why the customers love him so much.

You love to watch him challenging himself to do something that's out of the box for him. Just like anything else he tries, he's a natural in these glass high heels.

Watching Jongin move, the way his body twists, turns, and defies gravity, it's clear why he's irreplaceable. His every move is poetry, a symphony of strength, agility, and raw sensuality. Each drop, twirl, and seductive glance he throws seems to stitch a story, a narrative of passion, of yearning.

Happy 1 Year Anniversary! (Holy crap)

Man, time sure is f a s t. One year of being here with you guys and just vibing. Zamn. That's crazy.

I know I keep saying this, but I really do appreciate all of you guys for sticking around for so long. I never expected the silly little stories with my silly little characters 13 year old me was writing and creating would come to this in the end. It's honestly just so mind boggling, and I want to say thank you. Thank you for showing your support, for being so patient with me, for those that send such fun asks and prompts to answer, and just being so cool in general. Don't say that you aren't. I'll fight ye on that. I also thank the lurkers in my followers, I know you and I don't tango too much with interactions but your likes, reblogs or just generally looking through is enough for me.

I'd also like to thank the mutuals and friends I made in the IF community and in the Write Club Discord server for being so cool and helpful. I never expected to make any mutuals here, and I'm honestly glad I did.

Now, for the Anniversary Special content...... I don't have one written. I already have a short one for 1k Followers and is just waiting to be posted, but I forgot to prep one for the Anniversary. 🥲😭😭

I was planning to make a small IF to commomerate it, but college finals reared its ugly head like a disease so I didn't have enough time. So, instead, I'll just give y'all some Beta and BtS facts about this IF before it came to be as it is now. Hope that'll suffice, and I promise I'll make it up to y'all next year. 😭😭

Back in the earliest drafts for this IF, the prologue was supposed to start with a student Magus summoning an eldritch being from the underside of Reflection and it backfiring completely. The genre was supposed to fully embrace supernatural, but I ended up scrapping it instead for what we have now.

Beta Zephyrine was a mean girl diva; supposedly Fleur's opposite and bully. I changed it after deciding that Zeph's better off being Fleur's opposite in a more positive way (the version Zeph currently is) and genuinely being Fleur's friend, than whatever toxic mess the former was.

Eliseo was originally gonna be the big bad because of well… look at him. I ended up not doing that, because… look at him. He's simpable material, unfortunately.

Emery wasn't supposed to exist. I didn't originally intend for MC to learn nor have magic in the original drafts, thus no Familiar needed either, and let them be a non-magic character in the story. I changed my mind when I thought about how unfair that'll be, since that'll just make MC more of a damsel than a person with autonomy.

The 1586 Accident and the Willowsberg family as a whole was originally supposed to stay as a "myth" and unexplored as a whole. They were supposed to be mentioned only in passing and not talked about again.

In the early drafts, Fleur's parents were already dead/gone and she was working as her family bank's CEO at the start of the story. She was an outside figure that you'll meet through either Zephyrine or Weylyn.

Cooper was originally more of a loveable asshole back in his early characterization stages; smug know-it-all that loves to be a mischief maker. I have no idea what change happened to make him the hyper golden retriever he is now, but I don't regret it and I don't wanna know.

The choice of setting the IF in a rural city and in Lumintoile Academia specifically was based on old oneshots I wrote about Weylyn and Fleur 2-3 years ago. If you want to know what those oneshots are about, both of them are confessions scenes with Weylyn being the confessor.

Before Ophelia came to be as the 6th RO, she was originally supposed to be an antagonist, mostly due to a oneshot I wrote about her as a concept character 2 years ago. There were scenes planned where she would fight the cast and drama would ensue, but knowing what I know, I ended up scrapping the idea.

Weylyn's characterization didn't change much from his beta, surprisingly, and I think he's the only one who has retained his beta traits (besides some mild redesigning). I always intended him to be, well, him. The only things that did change are in spoiler territory, but very important to his characterization.

There were supposed to be 2 more side characters that you'll be introduced to in the early chapters with Fleur being a young CEO idea in mind, which were her two younger estranged cousins from her mother's side. I scrapped the idea for now, but they might make an appearance soon.

I had ideas to implement variables that show preferrences and proficiency in what magic MC uses, intending for them (MC) to be a jack-of-all trades instead of focusing solely on one magic. But then I thought about the long list of already existing variables I've written down, and went nope.

Eliseo & Fleur had the most rewrites and rehauls on their characterization. From what I can count and remember until recently, it's 10.

When I was making Emery, and basing him off of the Familiar Poll results, he was intented to be younger, 3 years old to be exact. I decided to age him up to 5 years old, because a) he would be too powerful, b) baby, c) "sir, that is a toddler and fresh out of infancy", and d) he would be too powerful.

The inspiration for the IF's whole vibes are from Kiersten White's 'The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein', V.C. Andrew's 'My Sweet Audrina', Laurie Anderson's 'Speak', Kyoukai no Kanata, Wonder Egg Priority, and the Dark Academia aesthetic itself.

This was originally supposed to be a self-contained story, more of a moment in the cast's life than something that will affect them in the long run or be actively going through with time, until I decided to add it into a growing timeline of events alongside other IF's.

SELECTIVITY .

I will only interact with mutual followers. This mostly goes for IC memes unless tagged otherwise. I do not follow for a follow. It’s nothing personal and intended for my own comfort, to keep me from feeling overwhelmed or if I can’t really see how our muses would interact in the long term. Other reasons deal with not having a tagging system, no rules or muse info present, formatting style or lack thereof; i.e. not cutting posts or more OOC than IC. I can be an impulsive & adaptive kind of writer at times. If nothing is plotted beforehand I'm prone to just wing it and see how it plays out. I’m also keen to follow my partner’s writing length and /or format should the desire arise for thread aesthetic goodness.

smol anon inquiry! your rule about not writing with "blogs that write a non-fictional character / a character that is based on a real life person"; i take that to mean you wouldn't write with any muse in a multimuse that also included historical fiction fandom muses (which is valid and pls take care of yourself), but what about people who run multiple blogs? if i write a muse based on a real historical person (such as from shows like black sails, ofmd, and such), would being mutuals with you on another blog of mine be boundary crossing? as in, i guess, is to about not wanting to interact with people who write these types of muses at all - or is it about not just being comfortable seeing that content? both are of course valid! i'm probably overthinking this, don't wanna cross boundaries, i hope you are doing good!

omg no i’m not that strict about it — like if you have one muse on your multi of many muses that fits into that category then it makes no difference to me, i just prefer not to write with muses that are directly off of someone who lived and breathed and existed ( this was more of an issue like a few years ago when people would rp real actors and less with like ‘this vaguely historical dude who lived 300 years ago’ ) and it’s mostly just because for me it is uncomfortable to write with that muse bc it blurs the fiction / reality line a little too much for my comfort. but if you HAVE one of those muses ( on a multi or another blog ) i really don’t mind at all.

this will also make it further confusing but in the cases of black sails or our flag means death where the characters are based off of like legends of real people ( like if you’re gonna write a character based off of blackbeard or something ) that’s fine with me, because the inherent appeal and “realness” of that historical figure in itself is like folklore at this point. but i’ve seen people rp characters from hamilton or that sort of thing where the character IS the person and it’s a bit more recent, that’s a little iffy for me but again, only because i can’t get out of the “this was a real person at one point and here i am with my lil blonde vampire muse what”
