FEMALE MOVIE/TV RECS (PART 5 / HORROR & CRIME DRAMA)
got inspired from a recommendation post so decided to make a list of movies and shows with female-centric stories/female protagonists. since i can't post all of the genres in one post, i'll split it into multiple posts and y'all can save or add to the list as you wish. (disclaimer: i have watched most of these, but i only know about the existence of others. not every movie/show on these lists will be my recommendation. my recommendations will be beneath the list with reasons. also some of these are way better than others in terms of storytelling/performance--which is why i'll list my faves separately):

Bird Box (8/10)
Under the Bridge (8/10)
PERSONAL NOTES
I watched Tragedy Girls years ago, and I remember being grossed out and having a lot of fun as well. If you like Jennifer's Body, you'll probably like Tragedy Girls, too. And if you like Tragedy Girls, you may also enjoy Thoroughbreds. All three have a twisted sense of girlpower.
The Call isn't scary so much as its nerve-wracking and upsetting. It's not gory (although there is violence), but it deals with heavy subject matter. I can, however, promise a satisfying ending. Even though I doubt it would put you at ease.
Horror is my least favourite genre so bear that in mind. I just hate jump scares (because I hate being startled) and I don't like gore though there are times where it doesn't bother me so much. So this is definitely not an exhaustive list on horror recs. Crime is as close as I usually get to such dark stuff so I put the dark crimes, psychological thrillers and horrors together. I don't even want to talk about these that much because I'm nauseous already.
Watch at your own risk.

You have such a way of articulating things I’ve been vaguely feeling into intelligent coherent statements. Would you care to elaborate on the way that how Laudna+Imogen “went canon” was a curse?
Hey anon,
Thank you! So this is the thing: obviously I tend towards a fairly critical and snarky demeanor, but like, the best way to put it is in the context of the impending Nein show. I, and most of the people I chat with who are also not feeling Imogen and Laudna's relationship, are not of the "if that PURPLE FLOATY HOMEWRECKER SKANK SHOWS UP I will EXPLODE and SCREAM and DIE" or "fjorester divorce" or pretending Yasha doesn't exist persuasion re: this relationship (or for that matter the WELL if Percy dies after 70 years of marriage to Vex and then she's with Keyleth for the rest of her life WE WIN type of person either). Like, honestly, there was a post advocating for a breakup, but I think it included within it an argument that they reunite after some time apart, and that's kind of the mood. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. There's no ship war to be had. I don't dislike the ship because of competition or some fundamental dislike of the characters, and I honestly would like to be able to like it, and the path for it to not suck would have been immensely simple. That path even still exists, though with every week it grows narrow and less smooth and far more awkward, but I think it will require a pretty serious out of game conversation that as far as I know hasn't happen, and I am not holding my breath given the lack of movement.
That's why it's a curse: the generic form of this curse would be "may your ship become canon prematurely, with with only one person really invested, and that person not actually prepared for it or expecting it, and may it have virtually no moments and exist in a very plot-heavy work where it is almost certainly going to be largely out of focus, after the groundwork when things were quieter was never laid, and may it be so close to being good but consistently miss the opportunities for that to happen."
Just to recap the issues, stripping away all the past snark:
It's never really felt like these were two people who had been best friends for two years. They've always felt like friends of circumstance - like people you meet the first week of college and kind of go around with so as not to be alone, or the only other person your age on your street. Because they were both extremely lonely they clung to each other...but they really don't actually connect with each other much in conversation other than just kind of blandly repeating how much they mean to each other and never showing it. They have no real boundaries or limits with each other, likely because of that fear of being alone, but they aren't exploring that in a Heavenly Creatures or Thoroughbreds kind of way either. There's virtually no sense of history - no inside jokes, no shared experiences prior to Zhudanna except for one throwaway line that, like many of their interactions, fell flat. Like...I don't actually think that it's bad to aim for a platonic female friendship and end up with an F/F ship but like. Beau and Jester had a great platonic female friendship that happened to also include Beau's brief crush. Imogen and Laudna didn't even sell me on them being friends, let alone lovers. They have always felt like oddly clingy roommates. Their respective interactions with quite literally every other PC - few of which I find romantic and many of which I find explicitly not romantic - all feel like they have more depth. Orym is explicitly not attracted to either of them and they've both had more meaningful and honest moments with him. Pun unintended but they both felt infinitely more alive during the party split when they couldn't just go to their dull gray comfort zone of each others' meaningless repetitive affirmations.
Zooming into that lack of boundaries and conflict, there's no arc. Once characters get together often the conflict resolves, but there needs to be a build to that point, and we simply don't have that. The two points where this could have happened were: the gnarlrock fight, had it actually played out, could have led to a deepening of the relationship and some honestly and character development but due to what I am again interpreting as fear of losing the other to the point of never addressing any of these points of friction, it just resumed the status quo. Similarly, as I mentioned, Laura flat out said she went in expecting to be rejected. I think that story would have won me over. I think that if Laudna had rejected her, and Imogen had to grapple with that (and, by extension, Laudna's justified anger and trauma from the Team Issylra didn't disappear into thin air) and they spend some time actually figuring out who they are as individuals and Laudna lets herself be more than a validation machine who pushes her emotions down, and then eventually they come back around to each other? I'd be unbelievably on board. And you can go back, to my posts and others, in which we were pretty harsh on the fanon cottage cheese (yes, I am going to try to make this happen) version but said "I trust Laura and Marisha to do this in a way that is interesting" and then they straight-up didn't.
Obviously this has the potential to change - I even think the next episode is finally a case of maybe bringing all the Delilah stuff to a much needed head which in turn might introduce something into the relationship - but man it's been a whole lot of nothing since they kissed. I think Laura's initiated every single conversation, as mentioned Laudna can't even reciprocate 5 minutes of dancing on a ghost pirate ship without wandering off, and they didn't even bother to take watch together.
Something I keep going back to, and which ties into the above, is Brennan Lee Mulligan's whole discussion of how important character creation is to story. The thing is, these characters were created as close friends. Why does this feel so lacking? Like...why do Kima and Allura, two NPCs, feel like they have more weight? Why did the platonic relationship of Molly and Yasha, for which Ashley wasn't even present, feel like it actually was a friendship of 8 months? Sam and Liam came up with an entire system of grifts! Why is literally the only detail we have from the time between leaving Gelvaan and the time arriving in Jrusar is that at some point Imogen and Laudna saw someone with nipple tassles, and that came up once, like 60 episodes ago? Why are people so frequently sold on say, Loquatius/Laerryn, which had less than 24 hours of gameplay over a single night in-game? Why does every single Circle of Needle and Thread member relationship feel more real? Why were Aabria and Travis able to convincingly play ex-lovers in a handful of episodes despite Aabria deliberately surprising him? Like...I am not saying preparation wasn't done, because it very well might have been, but it's not coming through at all and plenty of other people have managed to get across an existing friendship or relationship in a fraction of the time, within the same campaign, so it's not that the plot is moving too fast for it. And again, if prep wasn't done, or if it's not coming across, that's really fixable, but it hasn't been fixed. I think of the 4SD episode where, five or six episodes later, Marisha and Laura still hadn't talked about the relationship and it's like...yeah. We can tell. Literally a two hour trip to a cafe would fix this but god I don't think there's been one.
Anyway, obviously this was an incredibly popular ship, but it's honestly slowed down noticeably since going canon because...it's not that great, and there's not much content in canon. I think a big appeal of the ship was the anticipation and the fanon and now that it's canon...I suspect a lot of people are quietly realizing that actually yeah this is kind of all it is, at least for now, and something is going to have to happen to bring about a change.
And I hope so too - I joke about being a hater, and I am very much a critic...but this really is the realization of that post about being more of a dismayer than a hater. Laura's past two ships are probably my favorites, and Beauyasha is high up there, and even as Vaxleth isn't really up my alley it's sweet and it makes sense and has a lot of great moments. It really would not take a lot of work to make this ship good or at least okay and not...nothingness, but it does take some, and I haven't seen it.

What's your favorite depiction of werewolves (including any idea that is like, a generally humanoid person turns into a more animalistic type creature, like twilight princess or sonic unleashed)?
It changes per media.
Literary: Honestly? Twilight. Set aside all the Mormon fuckery and the quantum indigenous appropriation. The way that werewolves work as a sort of metaecological immune response, as a way to keep your community safe against foreign parasites? Big sexy. And then there's the supernatural traits of the pack being able to essentially hivemind? Again emphasizing the point of community and cooperation???? Aaaaaaugh. And then the actual creatures themselves literally just being wolves the size of thoroughbreds???????? I'm really sorry but Twilight werewolves really were just the biggest bait to me. That said, there was a pair of books which I cannot overstate how influential they were on me: Goosebumps' Werewolf of Fever Swamp set me down a lifelong fascination with the act of transformation, and then there was this one short story, and I swear I wish I could find it because of how much it has stuck with me, but I cannot find any information on it and haven't for years.
The whole plot of the short story was just this teenage boy who volunteers at a vet, gets bitten by a fox I think, and then it just has this absolute strangest descent/transformation into werevulpine vibes? I remember, or at least I think I do, very clearly that the fox was growing out of his stomach or something, and there was this very tense dinner scene where it was chicken for dinner? I truly have no idea where the fuck I read it, but I think it was probably my first experience with lycanthropy-as-adolescence-metaphor intermingling with lycanthropy-as-sexuality metaphor. And it probably shows, if anyone else happened to know what this story was.
Tabletop: Okay so I have to preface this by saying I actually hate World of Darkness Werewolves. I kind of hate it in general with very few exceptions, it always feels as though it's openly offensive or blatantly trying to show how definitely-not-offensive the 2.0 is (which just highlights other problems that weren't addressed at the root). With that said, the sociocultural implications of WoD Garou are honestly really neat! Especially because--again--their purpose is as protecting their communities from metaphysical threats and dangers! That is so fucking compelling to me--and the history they have intraculturally, with how they interpret themselves, their theology, and their place in the world--I find it all potentially fascinating. And as much as I fucking hate the fucked up nazi ecofash werewolf tribe concept just as an idea that needed to exist in that manner, any game where I can be both a werewolf and a nazi-killer is a game I will try very hard to critically support at least certain parts, and tabletop makes it easier to just throw away bullshit I dislike and keep the stuff I do like.
HONORABLE MENTION: Exalted Lunars, which aren't so much werewolves as they are furrybait flesh warping nightmare shoggoths who luxuriate in heresy and taboo, whose very presence in reality functions as a sort of existential terror akin to The Thing, except Lunars can also steal your memories along with your shape, so like, get fucked. They don't play like werewolves at all, so they don't get to be the actual victor, but I love them and everything about them so much that it'd be irresponsible not to mention them.
FILM: I have two answers to this, and they're both equally important. The first is An American Werewolf In London. It was the very first piece of film which has a non-wolfman type werewolf. It is also surprisingly a little bit camp in certain parts, but it's the original transformation sequence which gets its spot here. I would rewatch it on 2008 YouTube over and over and over, fascinated by it in the same way a fractal is. AmWolf is an incredibly important piece of werewolf media for a lot of reasons which are far more important, but for little-kid me, I just thought it was the coolest shit.
And then the other movie is Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf. Mostly bc I just really loved Scooby-Doo growing up and I also really loved werewolves so there'd be no contest. In hindsight the fact that it's a blatant speed racer parody is the funniest shit in the world to me. It's not actually even a mystery at all! It's just Scooby-Doo Speed Racer Monster Mash!!!!!! I love that! It's the sort of crazy silly media we don't get to have anymore, not really.
POETRY: Yes, I'm making the last favorite media rep a poem. You'll see why in just a moment.

You know those misconceptions posts you made about things like weapons and medical stuff? Could you do one for horses (and maybe along with some other animals, too)?
Yeah, no wukkas! :]
Horses sleep standing up. Horses can nap while standing, but REM sleep only happens when the horse is lying down.
Horses are colourblind. Horses have dichromatic vision. They're able to see blues and yellows (and thus certain shades of green) but they can't see red, pink, or purple.
Horses communicate vocally. While neighs and nickers are used for long-distance "where are yous", horses primarily use body language for communication. Most of this is done with ear signals.
Horses need shoes. This is more an individual or breed thing than a necessity. Many horses do fine barefoot, especially breeds like mustangs or brumbies, where they've spent generations without shoes. Other breeds who generally have softer feet (like thoroughbreds) often require shoes as a baseline. Shoes also depends on how much work a horse does. Horses that have a large area to roam and are often active don't need their hooves trimmed often either. When I was a stockman and worked with Wiluna, who was a brumby caught at 2 and trained as a stockhorse, she never wore a shoe a day in her life and she didn't need trimmings since she was run often and naturally wore her hooves down.
White horses are common. The horse on the left is not white, it's grey. You can tell it's grey because it has black skin on its muzzle and black skin around its eyes. Greys are born grey and often lighten to white as they age. True white horses are the result of the dominant white gene, which is extremely rare. They have pink hooves, pink skin on the nose and around their eyes, but brown eyes. Dominant whites are born white. The thoroughbred on the right is a dominant white. ALBINO HORSES DO NOT EXIST. THERE IS NO ALBINISM GENE IN HORSES. That said, the closest gene to albinism in horses are lethal white syndrome foals, none of which survive longer than 72 hours after birth because the frame overo gene that results in their white colour also results in them being born without a colon. It's an agonising death and most are euthanised a few hours after birth. They're born with pink skin, all-white coats, pink hooves, and blue eyes. Sometimes their colour is almost a lilac purple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Horses don't live a long time. With modern care horses often live into their 30s and even 40s. The oldest horse to ever live died at 62 years old in 1822. The most recent World's Oldest Horse, a gelding named Shayne, passed away at 51 years old in 2013.
Mules are stubborn. Mules aren't stubborn, they're just extremely smart and more certain in their own abilities than horses are (something they get from their donkey parent). Horses are self-destructive and have practically zero sense of self-preservation. Mules have incredible self-preservation and will not do something they do not think they can do without harming themselves, which makes people think they're stubborn. A horse will jump a metre to the ground and break its legs doing so, a mule will refuse the jump and slide down inside, preserving its life.
Mares are calmer than stallions. Any equestrian can tell you that mares are just as bad if not worse than stallions sometimes. They're moody and temperamental and very bloody obstinate. In my experience stallions are generally fairly easy to handle as long as there isn't a mare in oestrus nearby, but even then most riding/working horses are not stallion, they are gelded. You cannot geld a mare and they show it. Wiluna (the mare I rode when I was a stockman) would not tolerate ANYONE but me, and would frequently bite other horses around her, which is why she was relegated to working with me instead of being doubled up with someone else. Because of this she also had to be hobbled alone. She ran the mob and she knew it.
Mustangs have always been in the Americas. While it's true that horses WERE native to the Americas at one point, they (like most Pleistocene megafauna) went extinct in the Americas during the tail end of the last ice age, possibly due to overhunting by humans. The mustangs that are now in America (and the brumbies now in Australia) are technically feral animals, having descended from domestic animals what went wild or were left to wander. There is a case that could made, I supposed, for how long a species has to be in a place in order for it to be considered native (for example, dingos are considered a native species in some states despite having only been in Australia for ~5k years and not evolving on continent) but this is up for debate.
The natural gait of a horse isn't a gallop, but instead a trot. In the wild, galloping is only for flight to escape predators. A trot is the comfortable cruising gait of a horse.
Horses don't have sensitive skin. Horses have very very sensitive skin! It's why I don't like pointed spurs. The spurs I wore were rowels with the prongs filed down so I wouldn't poke Wiluna when I used them, but often they just ended up being for show since she responded so easily without them. All I needed was a light tap of my boot and she'd sidestep or do whatever I needed her to. That side, while the hide is sensitive, the mane is not. I would routinely fist a hand with the reins in Wiluna's mane when riding hard and she never fussed over it. You also grip the reins with one hand and fist that hand in the horse's mane when mounting as well.
You don't drive a horse. You guide it. You can drive a wagon/cart but you're still guiding the horse. Driving when it comes to animals/livestock means to bring an animal (but typically a group of animals) somewhere. So "driving horses" would mean you're mustering a mob of horses to a certain location. Think "cattle drive."
Most horses don't actually like their faces touched. This goes especially for strangers. Do not touch the face of a horse you do not know---you're liable to be bitten. If you want to present yourself to a horse, hold out your palm FLAT OUT with your fingers extended slightly downwards and let the horse sniff it. Then pull your hand back before it can bite you, because it's liable to try. (Also, if you feed a horse, the whiskers tickle!)
That's all I can think of for now. Have some horse moustaches.

Addendum to the chapter 1 post that I thought of later:
“Not this afternoon—haven’t got time. I must mosey up to the North End to see a man who has got a lovely throat. Nobody can find out what is the matter. He has puzzled all the doctors. He has puzzled me, but I’ll find out what is wrong with him if he’ll only live long enough.” This is Eric's best friend, a well known doctor, cosplaying as, like, 1900s Dr. House. No concern for the patient's well being, just a Mystery that must be solved. No wonder Eric has such a low opinion of doctors!
(Sidenote: those of you who Anne, what is Gilbert like as a doctor? Because TBC didn't have a great opinion of them, and this book is not shaping up to be too complimentary either. Did LMM just have a fairly poor opinion of doctors in general that colors her work?)
On to chapter two, and we meet an actually sympathetic character! Larry West seems like a lovely young man, and I hope he recovers fully and that he and Agnes Campion are blissfully happy together. Unlike either Eric or David, Larry actually seems to care about the people under his charge, i.e. his students. I already want him to be our protagonist instead.
"The former looked more like a benevolent old clergyman or philanthropist than the keen, shrewd, somewhat hard, although just and honest, man of business that he really was." Kilmeny of the Orchard, sponsored by the Better Business Bureau! There is absolutely an interesting thread to tease out across LMM's life and work that connects Eric Marshall to Barney Snaith, but I want to read more of this book before I make further commentary on that. But it does appear that Maud's opinions on rags-to-riches businessmen, uh, Evolved over the years.
Actually never mind, I'm gonna girl who's only ever read The Blue Castle this book a tiny bit more. Compare:
"And then those girls were as pretty as pinks, now weren’t they? Agnes was the finest-looking of the lot in my opinion. I hope it’s true that you’re courting her, Eric?”
and
“Prettiest girl in Montreal,” said Dr. Redfern. “Oh, she was a looker, all right. Eh? Gold hair—shiny as silk—great, big, soft, black eyes—skin like milk and roses. Don’t wonder Bernie fell for her. And brains as well. She wasn’t a bit of fluff. B. A. from McGill. A thoroughbred, too. One of the best families."
Women aren't really people, they are trophies and objects to be collected and revered. Barney grows out of this mentality through his travels. Eric... well it remains to be seen about Eric, doesn't it?
"Perhaps I am. When a man has had a mother like mine his standard of womanly sweetness is apt to be pitched pretty high." So we're getting the standards by which Eric judges a future wife and the role she will be expected to play. He wants a society hostess, a woman who can step seamlessly into his mother's shoes. He wants her to be sweet and serene and, presumably, beautiful and delicate like his mother in her portrait. David and Mr. Marshall both basically want him to marry Ethel Taverse -- beautiful, well brought up, good lineage, of the Right Sort. Eric... honestly Eric has such fantasy standards for a woman that in a different book the resolution would be that he realizes that he's gay. He's doing that doesn't-realize-they're-queer-yet thing of, "it's not that I don't like [expected other gender], it's just that I haven't found anyone yet with [vague laundry list of impossible qualities]." I know that doesn't always translate into queerness, but it's an experience that definitely rings true to my baby ace teenage years before I had the words or knowledge to accurately describe my experiences.
"In all likelihood the worst thing that will happen to you over there will be that some misguided woman will put you to sleep in a spare room bed. And if that does happen may the Lord have mercy on your soul!” Go to PEI, but don't consort with the locals! The Wrong Kind of Woman might tempt you! This book is a great primer on how classism and eugenics go hand in hand, isn't it?
So our plot has been set up for us. Eric, a young man in possession of a good fortune, is off to Prince Edward Island, where he will soon find himself in want of a woman to be his wife. She will either be a commoner, whom his family and friends think isn't good enough for him but whom he loves and will stand up for, or she will be a secret aristocrat, whom he will pluck out of her shabby surroundings and return to her birthright in high society. I want this book to go with option a, because it's more interesting, but from what I know of it it veers closer to option b instead.
(What he needs is an Anne Shirley to whack him upside the head with a slate and tell him to stop being such a jerk, but I'm not holding out hope.)

based on your favs you seem like someone who can appreciate some beautiful gorgeous fucked up 80s gore! i'd recommend you the blob (1988), the fly (1986), fright night (1985) and creepshow (1982). i'd also recommend you the hitcher (1986), bug (2006), splinter (2008), [rec] (2007) and my little eye (2002) because they're isolated and anxiety inducing, like the blair witch project, the thing and the evil dead. i'd recommend you urban legend (1998), house of wax (2005), behind the mask: the rise of leslie vernon (2006), totally killer (2023) and you're next (2011) when you're in the mood for something fun and bloody like scream! hope there's some you haven't seen yet! :)

I went back to work today. And that is good. It is nice to have a routine again. Today was a little boring. But it was not all bad. I had a pretty good day.
I didn't sleep amazing. But I woke up and was fine enough. I found James on the couch just so tired but not able to get back to sleep. They would try again after I left. But for the moment they were just on the couch looking sad.
I got dressed and kissed their head to try and cheer them up. They had packed me a little lunch. And sent me off with a big hug.
I made it half way across the street when I realized I forgot my drink. So I went back up. Decided to also get orange juice too. Another loss and then I was off.
It was a really easy drive. No traffic. No sun in my eyes. I got to camp and it was very cold. I was glad I wore a fleece under my big jacket. It actually felt like winter today.
I drove up to the art building first to drop off some stuff. I found a box I could bring home for getting rid of the stuff we wanted to put on the stoop. Excellent. I will have to go take the trash out at the art building probably tomorrow. But I was to cold and wanted to go to the office and have my breakfast.
James packed me a bagel and it was very good. I was the first one there and I put the heat on and tried to make it cozier in there. Cause it was very chilly.
I had my bagel and answered some emails. And put some stuff away and just tried to settle back into being at work. I didn't really know what to do. So as a first step I looked at out to do list and I decided to rewrite the whole thing because we have knocked out so many things. And I gave us some room to add things. It was pretty productive, even if I couldn't cross things off.
Camp registration opened last night. I was prepared to hear the phones ring a lot today. But I was alone and I wouldn't be able to help anyone so at 858 when the phone started ringing I got out of there.
I grabbed the gator keys (after hemming and hawing about walking to the Alaskans) and drove to Yukon to go in the basement. I wanted to borrow some plastic boxes and I knew we had some down there. And a million lids that do not fit those boxes.
The drive up there is very quick but I didn't want to drive so fast because it was stupid cold and my ears and hands were so cold. Thankfully the basement was warm and I was able to warm up a little.
After I got my boxes I drove to top bar and saw a tree fell down. I took a picture so I could show the office to make sure they knew. I waved to the horses and yelled at them happy birthday. I know they aren't thoroughbreds but they deserve a happy birthday still.
When I got back to the office Heather was there. It was so nice to see her. And we talked for a bit about the break and what I had been doing out and about this morning. I told her I was waiting on the next steps for the house and that I didn't want to bother the people but I also want to know what's happening!
I spoke it into existence though because when I sat back at my laptop the appraisal was there! This was a stressful read. It was 25 pages and it was a lot. Going over the whole space. Comparing it to other houses in the area. But the house appraised over what we offered. Which means we should be good?? We need to speak to Harold and make sure we understand it correctly but I am shocked how close it appraised. Since it has been listed originally for so much more.
I was very excited that this came in so I didn't have to be so stressed. And when everyone else came in I was able to share the new news and that was nice.
We all talked about our Christmases and our favorite gifts. We all seemed to buy a gift for ourselves that we liked a lot. Alexi got a really cool drink caddy from her husband though that we all are very jealous of/think is hilarious.
More and more parents were calling and emailing about registering. Camp is about half full and it has barely been a day since registration opened. Crazy. A lot of the calls were about wait-list. Because the y had not set that up and many weeks were already completely full for different ages. I was tasked with answering some question emails. Me and Sarah were sent to go find Joe for some keys and then to go and take some pictures of cabins and bathrooms for a concerned parent.
When we found Joe we were being silly saying how dramatic people are about the rustic bathrooms and cabins. Somehow this got interpreted as the bathroom being a joke and then he thought there was a hole and then it turned out there was a hole in the door! So the miscommunication became but regular communication.
Sarah did the driving of the gator this time. And I remembered my gloves so it wasn't as bad. Still very cold. We had to sweep a little when we got to the cabins so they didn't look messy in the pictures. Everything needs some paint though. It wasn't like beautiful but they were fine.
We went to the pool to take pictures and I enjoyed seeing all the plants that are being stored in there. They are thriving! I'm very happy for them.
We went back to the office and it was lunch time. I texted with James about house stuff. They went for a bike ride and went and got themselves a sandwich and when they got home they sent me some paperwork to pass along. We are such a good team.
I didn't really know what to do myself after I had my lunch. I had one of my Dear America books with me about living on the prairie and it felt a little like research. Like I was learning how someone would live and go to school and what they would learn and so I could kind of justify it as work. Research. Because I had nothing to do and this was could be used as inspo towards programing.
Around 3 Alexi announced that we would have a staff meeting. I let her know I didn't mind staying later. She was convinced we would finish by 4. Absolutely I knew that would not happen. We would finish the meeting at 440.
It was mostly my fault though because I had so much followup and questions and things that I don't think normally happens in the Monday meetings (because I'm not there). But now I have some tasks for tomorrow and that feels good! But I was very much ready to go home. I was losing focus at times and was searching for build a bear clothes on eBay and looking at squishmallow dragons. I am not buying things but it was fun to search for things.
I said goodbye to everyone and went home. The drive home was good too. No traffic again! Amazing. And when I got home I struggled to bring the box inside but I got it in and was very very winded when I said hello to my James.
Just rested my forehead on their chest and wheezed and caught my breath while they told me I would be okay.
They had done all the laundry. And had made us salads for dinner. Still no oven. We are going on a week and a half now. Hopefully we can get someone on the phone tomorrow because it's been a while now. We are making due but I miss pasta.
We would hang out together on the couch and after we ate we read our books. I finished my Dear America and was pleasantly surprised that there wasnt as much tragedy and I didn't cry at all! It was a nice one. I picked another to start tomorrow. Which is actually a different series called "My name is America" which I think are all boys. This one is a boy one and another frontier story. Excellent.
I would spend some time on the couch watching TikToks. Then tried to collect some snails. And then did my knitting for the day. This style is so much quicker it's wild. I think it's looking really nice too. I really hope I did the math right. But thankfully if I need to frog the whole month I will be able to fix it easier and it won't be as much as a nightmare situation.
I took a bath. Used my new vanilla shea butter. And after I was dressed I played with my new hair tool. Which I'm getting better at. Still not perfect but I am trying! Making me feel pretty.
Now we are in bed. And I am ready to sleep. My throat is hurting a little so I'm going to sip some water and get ready for bed.
Tomorrow I hope to have lots to do. And I hope to stop by Manor Mill to see if my final pieces are done. We will see. I hope it's a good day.
Sleep well everyone. Take care of yourselves! Goodnight!

my fair lady: drabble #4
once again i have been bullied into writing this!!! this is inspired by a series of asks from an anon, namely this one and this one. and ofc as always it's inspired by @romeoandjulietyouwish! this takes place before any of the events of my fair lady.
In the spring, Keyleth turns twenty, and the occasion is marked in a much more subdued style than would typically be befitting a princess. The Ashari Nation is in the midst of a costly war, and there aren't extra funds to spare for a large gala—not that Keyleth minds, Vax is aware. She confessed her relief to him the night before the celebration that only dignitaries and important guests from the Ashari Nation had been invited, to cut down on costs and to ensure safety during tumultuous times. Even still, Vax's assignment for the night was to be within ten feet of the princess at all times, just in case.
The soiree is nice, classy, and honestly more casual than Vax would have predicted, and he can see in Keyleth's body language throughout the night how glad she is that she is not in some sprawling ballroom surrounded by hundreds of people she doesn't even know. She moves about the party like a beam of sunshine, her dress long and flowing in a goldenrod color that makes the night feel like bright day.
Despite the more restrained nature of the event, Keyleth is still a princess, and she is gifted all sort of luxurious things from guests both in attendance and not. Thoroughbred horses, gowns, jewels, rare tomes, cases of exquisite wine. Keyleth accepts each and every one with a gracious, humble smile, and Vax watches as the presenters leave her company looking like they were the ones who had just received a gift.
When the evening is over and Keyleth has retired to her chambers for the night, Vax takes his usual route to the cupboard by the kitchen down into the catacombs. He'd left a small package in there the night before, and now, as he stands in front of the secret stone door, he hems and haws about delivering it. He knows that social events are taxing on Keyleth, and that she likely wishes to be alone. Still, the idea of not stealing even a moment with her on her birthday seems sacrilegious. He scratches on the door.
It takes only a few seconds for it to swing open. She is still in her evening gown, though her hair has been pulled from its elaborate updo. She sighs and smiles when she sees him. "I was worried you weren't coming."
He blinks in surprise. "I would have thought you would want some time to yourself."
She reaches out to grab his wrist and pull him inside. "I am myself when I'm with you." She kisses him, and she tastes like sunshine.
Vax tucks her hair behind one ear. "You should let me brush this out, lest you develop tangles in your sleep."
"Well hang on." She peers down at the small package he's not hiding well behind his back. "What do you have there?"
And suddenly, Vax is shy. It is rare for him to feel bashful around her; usually, it is he who tries to pull the blush of modesty from her cheeks. "It is...nothing. Just a little thing."
Slowly, she reaches down for it, and he lets her take it from his hand. It fits easily into one palm and is messily wrapped in cheesecloth and twine. Keyleth takes it over to her sofa and sits down, Vax trailing behind her awkwardly. She pulls at the twine and the cheesecloth falls open to reveal a tiny music box, only a few inches a side. Carved into the light wood is a mosaic of moons, stars, and other celestial bodies, neatly fitted together to form a mesmerizing night skyscape.
"Oh," she breathes, a slow, soft smile spreading across her face. "Oh, it's so lovely."
Vax feels so silly, to be this relieved. "It's just something I picked up in Syngorn before we left, something I could take with me that would remind me that that place was more than just my awful father. It's really nothing special."
She frowns up at him. "Of course it's special. It's from you."
The crank for the box sticks out of one side, and she spins it. A light, tinkling melody begins to play, whimsical and a bit melancholic. After just a few notes, tears spring to Keyleth's eyes, and Vax begins to panic.
"Hey." He sits next to her, placing a hand on her knee. "Is something wrong?"
"This song." She sniffles. "It's an old Elvish lullaby."
Vax nods. "Yes?"
"It's just...my mother used to sing this to me." Vax blinks in shock. "I'd forgotten. It's been so long, and I haven't heard it since..." She stares down at the little box in her hands, tears streaming down her face.
Vax knows that Keyleth remembers little of her mother, who passed when the princess was only five. He knows how desperately he would love to experience a piece of his own mother again, to hear her hum any of the folk tunes she used to sing around their home in Byroden. He stretches his arm around her shoulder and pulls her in, tucking her head under his chin. "I'm so sorry, Keyleth. I didn't mean to upset you—"
"Upset me?" Keyleth twists her head to look up at him. "Vax, this is the single greatest gift I've ever received. You've given me a memory of my mother and a piece of you, all wrapped up in one. I can't imagine another gift ever meaning as much to me as this one does."
Vax is so happy he's worried his heart will now forever live in his throat. "Oh. Well, good."
She sets the box in her lap, grabs his face, and kisses him, one of the fiercest kisses he's ever been given. "Thank you, Vax'ildan," she whispers against his lips, "for making this the best birthday I've ever had."
And as he kisses her again, Vax is aglow with the warmth of the sun itself.

Favorite shows/movies that aren't ST?
oooo i have a lot.
shows:
dark - its german its time travel its on netflix its AMAZING. ive said for a while that this was my all time favorite show. it might be tied with stranger things.
cable girls - my favorite spanish show (there are a lot of good spanish shows) this ones about 1920s/30s spain of some girls who work at a telephone company. i love this show so much.
defending jacob - this is on apple tv its the mini series adaptation of the book and its my favorite murder story EVER!!!!! its about a 14 year old kid whos on trial for the murder of his classmate. it is insane from start to finish i love this show so much.
the wilds - staged plane crash and a bunch of girls are stranded on an island. im so pissed they canceled this.
i am not okay with this - again, an absolute crime that this was canceled. lesbian with super powers. classic.
paper girls - ANOTHER FUCKING CANCELED SHOW but still recommend. time travel again.
the end of the fucking world - i love this show because it ended when it should have. so many murder shows just drag on but this one was cool with ending just after two seasons and that was the right thing to do.
movies:
donnie darko - more time travel. i fucking love time travel can you tell?? this is one of my all time favorite movies.
another earth - this is an incredibly underrated low budget film from 2011. its about a girl who committed vehicular manslaughter and tries to apologize to the dad of the family she killed, but she loses her nerve and ends up being his house cleaner, all the while there is another earth being discovered with parallel versions of everyone and theres a contest for who gets to be flown up there. i love this movie so fucking much. i think this actually is my favorite movie of all time. have any of you guys seen this? ive never met anyone who has.
dead poets society - classic. todd and neil are gay.
thoroughbreds - this is about two girls who plan to kill one of the girls stepfather. i love this movie so much. also its exactly an hour and a half so thats satisfying.
portrait of a lady on fire - beautiful french wlw period piece. theres literally no male characters in this whole movie. i think theres one and his only line is bonjour. automatic 10/10.
IT (both movies) - theres not a lot of horror movies with characters that i love this much. its the same reason i love stranger things. i love how its comedic but also spooky. and i think the second one is incredibly well casted like its actually insane especially eddie. they look freakishly alike.

Alright spill XD...
I hope your traveling goes well and that there aren't many delays/problems ❤
put a version of the book emoji in my inbox, and i'll tell you the plot of a fanfic i haven't written, but want to write!
ah thank you! apart from being at the airport far too early, it's literally been all smooth sailing with travelling here, so i'm hoping the rest of my trip goes just as smoothly!
now, onto these fics ... two emojis means you get two ideas (sorry i don't make the rules, i just concoct these crazy ideas)
okay for the first one, i've been playing far too much red dead redemption and i'm not even sorry about it
outlaw!steve. he's ruthless and cold. he robs people, he shoots before he speaks, and he's the most trusted of his gang. he's not the leader, but literally no plan is made without steve being involved, and no plan is executed without steve leading the troops.
however, one time this grand plan of robbing the nearby saloon goes bad (if you've played rdr2, think the end of chapter two, which leads to the van der linde gang having to leave horseshoe overlook) and the gang scatters, having agreed that if something goes wrong, they split up to make it harder for law enforement to catch up with them.
steve is injured, he's shot and he's got a dislocated shoulder, and he's not doing too well when his horse takes him to this ranch – and you guessed it, introducing rancher!danny. he's got a pretty peaceful ranch life; he's got some horses, some cattle, and he's got his ranch dog, eddie. what he wasn't expecting was for a wounded and bruised outlaw, who most definitely has a bounty over his head, and his stressed out mustang to come crashing into their lives.
and it'll be a little cliché, because as danny manouvers coping with steve and the way the outlaw is used to sleeping in a tent, and change camps every week, while still making sure he heals up, and steve learns the pace of the ranch, figuring out that cattle is far from his thing, but the horses he can truly help with, he decides to clean up and offers to help out at the ranch permanently, wanting to pay off his debt to the state and to danny.
and they'll fall a little in love but, yknow, that's life.
a little scene for that comes here:
"look, mcgarrett, there're bounty hunters looking for you all over, what's to say i don't turn you over to them, and make sure i never see your scar-face again?" danny crossed his arms over his chest, the dust from the gravel settling around his boots as he comes to a stop a few feet from where steve was sitting on the steps to the porch, eddie slumbering in the shade behind him.
"what's to say i haven't waited for that to happen?" steve grumbled, rolling his eyes a little, though not being able to hide the wince as he stood up. danny's home-made stitches to the gash on his side had worked, better than anything steve could have done himself, but it still pulled on his skin whenever he moved. "you don't get to live a bad life, the way i have, and have good things happen to you."
danny huffed out a chuckle, turning his head to look towards the horses' pasture, where steve's muscular grullo dun mustang stuck out like a sore thumb next to danny's elegantly built and darkly coloured thoroughbreds. yet, the horse looked perfectly at home – just the way it had looked perfectly normal to see steve sitting on the porch. "well, it's a good thing some of us happens to believe in second chances." he noticed how his words caused steve to go still, the hand that had landed on his saddle slipping from the smooth leather in surprise. "you're not going anywhere, mcgarrett."
Tumblr media
then for the second one, well it's kind of cheating for me to put this here, because i actually started writing down some stuff for it on the plane but oh well–
also this has probably been done before? i've read some variants of steve ending in jersey as a kid and meeting danny, but i haven't read exactly this one–
it's steve, along with mary and john, who has to enter the witness security programme after doris' death (she stays dead in this one homies), and they get sent to new jersey, where the agency has got them a good house in a family friendly neighbourhood. steve mostly closes himself off, somewhere between having to leave himself being "the kid from hawaii" in their house on oahu, and john tending extra to mary who's not coping so well with the situation.
but then there's this fiesty next-door neighbour kid, who occasionally climbs out the window of his bedroom, and lounges on the roof with a cigarette when the night sky is draped above their heads, and this is the same kid who makes fun of steve and his bag of football equipment, but still lends him a pencil and covers his ass in class when steve's too caught up in his own mind to pay attention.
turns out maybe this fiesty baseballer, danny, is everything steve needs to get out of his head, at the same time as stella and bridget is everything mary needs to warm up. and this too is a little cliché with two boys finding their way in life and love and all that jazz, and when they finally get the chance to move back to hawaii, steve's not so sure he's ready to yet, because leaving for hawaii would mean leaving danny ... and for the first time since steve was born, he's not so sure hawaii's home anymore.
aaaand a little scene from that:
steve was looking far too at home where he was sprawled across danny's floor, face buried in the pillow he had fallen asleep on mere hours before. "steve, get up you shit," danny huffed, nudging the side of steve's chest with his foot, receiving a groan in return from the teenager on the floor. "we were supposed to practice for this test, not sleep."
"you could just come down here and sleep with me," steve slurred, patting his hand around to find danny's leg and tug on the fabric of his sweatpants. "it's comfortable, i promise."
danny chuckled, thinking it over for a second, before throwing another pillow on the floor, and grabbing a blanket. "alright then, but if my shoulder's sore and i get shit at practice because of it, i'm blaming you." he grinned, wrapping steve's arm around himself, enjoying the comfort of the taller boy as he enveloped himself around steve. "if my parents find us like this, i'm blaming you."
he felt steve's lips split into a smirk against his hairline, the soft puffs of steve's breath tickling against his neck. "that's a risk i'm willing to take."

ooc. i’m struggling to figure out wHAT THE FUCK breed Shang’s horse is. Because historically a Ferghana horse makes sense. Even the drawing style would suggest that. However the Ferghana is actually built similarly to a thoroughbred and bUGS ME.

The other night I had to have a conversation with one of my barn friends and she was like. Baffled at someone disagreeing with her about stuff... it's mostly a western barn so lots of barrel race yeehaw shit. And she was like "omg California BANNED RODEOS!!" and idk if that's entirely true I didn't look it up but i was like "oh, good". Lmao. She was mortified when I told her I don't think bull riding or bronc riding (where they have a bucking strap tied on to force them to buck) is appropriate treatment of an animal, and that I think calf roping is atrocious. And also that rodeos are full of people who would definitely call me fucking slurs and would have no qualms just saying the N word probably. And she seemed. Dumbfounded? That I could possibly have this idea about rodeos?
But I made sure to phrase it as "I find the treatment of animals inappropriate" and "I would feel unsafe in those environments", not "everyone at and supporting rodeos is a drooling racist redneck loser". And she actually listened to me and obviously disagreed (she's from my hometown which is.... let's just say it's a miracle I'm not also a yeehaw right wing dumbass).
Someday I'll be able to be at a barn without conservatives but man. Is it difficult. Luckily most of them are like. Pretty normal people (despite what the internet will say about it being ok to punch everyone who has different views from you) and I've never encountered any extreme viewpoints, except for that one bitch who didn't pay board and got kicked out and was a dipshit in EVERY possible way.
It's like having conservative family members. Like maybe uncle Joe votes red but that doesn't mean he thinks all gay people should die. He's probably just never met one bc he's never left his yeehaw hometown lmao.
Most people (especially if they don't spend a ton of time online) are just kinda normal, man. The barn owner is a conservative lady who is... not the brightest tbh but she's a good horsewoman and she really likes me and thinks im hilarious for some reason. So I got that going for me! Also like there aren't trump flags flying at the barn or anything. She's just a simple lady who's lived Farm Life her entire life yknow.
Anyways I'm glad the stupid anti vax idiot is gone and I hope her stupid daughter grows up to hate her and I hope her horse kicks her someday (she is about 150 pounds too heavy for that horse. And this is not a fatphobic thing, it's for the legitimate health and safety of the animal for one's weight and tack to not be over 20% of the horse's weight. There exist plenty of proper horses for this woman to ride. She has a very thin thoroughbred and it's just. Awful. I hope he's ok.)

Okay, so this is really stupid but I need this idea out of my head. (So, once again, please don't hate me)
So, here it goes: 2022 F1 cars as (racing) horse breeds
In the championship standings order
Tumblr media
RB18 as Thoroughbred It was an obvious choice, this breed is extremaly fast and hard-working but they can be a little difficult to handle. They have kind of dare-devil nature and it for some reason reminds me of RB.
Tumblr media
F1-75 as Tennessee Walker Those horses are strong and calm but tend to get anxious just before the race (they don't like the gate). So, given how the car was acting those past races I guess it fits? Also, yes the horses do stand like that (it's something that stands out among other breeds, so maybe that's a bit like Ferrari too?)
Tumblr media
W13 as Andalusian I know they aren't as fast as the others but those cars aren't all that fast in 2022 too, right? Also they are beautiful and elegant, which just for some reason clicks with Mercedes. They are described as smart and quick to learn. Make of it watch you will (but I saw it in the light of hoping for Mercedes developement this year).
Tumblr media
MCL36 as Paint Horse
Paint Horses are said to be friendly and easy going, so I matched them with the team pretty easily. They are very social and playful but can be stubborn at times. With the right motivation and training they can be very fast, so (by delusions and weird thinking) I thought of it as mirror image of the right strategy and conditions that can give the team win (like in Monza last year).
Tumblr media
A522 as Akhal Teke Those horses have an high endurance and are really hardworking and I kind of see those qualities in the Alpine car. Akhal-Tekes are energetic horses with fits with the team spirit. (Also their fur can "shine" and the pink on A522 is bright so...)
Tumblr media
C42 as Hanoverian It was hard to decide but I though that the elegant, "multi-talented and easy to train" horses sit well with Alfa. They are used in various different sports and it reminds me of how the team tries to adapt to every situation, catching every oportunity to do better. Also, they are said to be gentle and it reminds me of Alfa for some reason. (I know it doesn't make much sense).
Tumblr media
AT03 as Morgan
This horses aren't the largest or fastest but they are strong and inteligent. For some reason when I was reading about them I thought about Alpha, I really can't explain why. Maybe it was just because they aren't the biggest among the teams but still show planty of fight?
Tumblr media
VF-22 as Appaloosa Again, this horse breed is one of the shorter ones but it's said to be "playful, sociable, and quite intelligent" which just speaks Haas team to me. Also, they can be stubborn sometimes (especially when you want them to do some work) and I just see all this in the 2022 car (I'm pretty sure I'm crazy at this point).
Tumblr media
AMR22 as Arabian Horse Okay, so this is highly subjective but I just immediately thought of matching those two up when I couldn't get rid of this (stupid) idea. Arabian horses are strong, fast and their endurance is incredible (not surprising, given that they were used to race on deserts) and the AMR22 showed that it can be all of those things. They are kind and calm (which reminds me of the whole AM team) but they can be stubborn and jumpy, making them hard to handle at times and this is just like a description of the 2022 car. Not to mention that those horses are absolutely gorgeous, just like the AMR22 chassis.
Tumblr media
And last but not least: FW44 as Quarter Horse To say the truth this breed is a bit slower then the others mentioned here but they are strong and willing to learn new things and this just reminds me of Williams this season. Quarter Horses are calm and easy to handle, which makes them a the perfect horse, really. They might be overlooked a little but they are capable of doing great things.
Okay so that's it, it's made just for fun and is based on my own opinions (which are not logical or by any means true), so I hope nobody will get mad about it. Sorry again.

🙏Please Help Rescue 🙏
Hey guys,
I don't normally post things like this, but I'm trying to rescue a thrown away unidentified, late teenager, thoroughbred gelding. He's currently held at the Stroud Killpen and I'd like to pull him earlier than him waiting until I'm paid next Wednesday. The longer he stays at the KP the more likely he can contract viruses and infections (something his body probably couldn't handle).
He is extremely malnourished. His bones are extremely visible and he just needs a soft landing and a good home (which I can provide). He'll need lots of groceries, a farrier (since it seems like he hasn't seen one in years), medical exam, and many other things. He is not 100% sound either so rehabilitation/chiropractor will probably be needed.
You can tell by the way he acts that he is a big gentle sweetheart, and him ending up there is no fault of his own. He will be my third rescue horse to pull from a KP and he'll be my worst case. I've never had a horse so malnourished, but I'm willing to put in the time, effort, patience, and money.
I plan on pulling him Wednesday when I am paid and saving his life, but the fundraiser is just to try and help me get to him sooner. His "bail" is $750 and I'm already $120 there from two people. So we aren't far from the goal. If you're unable to donate would you please share this instead? Any help is greatly appreciated. 🙏
Here is the link to the money pool I've setup for him:
