one thing rin has learnt whilst overseas is that you and him might really be connected by souls, by ribs, and by heart perhaps too.

strict routines he’s stuck to since he was just fourteen — wake up, open the windows, take deep breaths, stretching, yoga, mediation shifted in its own ways to accommodate you back when he had first gotten together with you: to waking up and looking at you with the light outside from the windows shining perfectly at your face that makes him gulp a little, staring hard and long whilst tracing your face as gently as possible, indulging in the sugary-sweet moment before returning back to his routine like a robot. its what he’s used to, what he’s comfortable enough, what he knows. and recently, he’s been mimicking you, he thinks: closing his eyes immediately at the bright light in his room the same way you bury your face in his face when you first wake up away from the “bright” lights in his room, drinking a cup of coffee that he swore he wouldn’t drink despite making it for you every morning like clockwork albeit with much less sugar than you would have added, and opening his phone the first thing he does right after it all the same way you open your phone and flash him essentially in his bedroom with your bright phone screen that illuminates the now matching photo of you and him beaming at the camera the day he left.

maybe its rin’s way of feeling your presence in his life now that its back to before he met you — just him and football, wearing a different but similarly stuffy and claustrophobic football jersey that marks his name at the back of it. bitter coffee that still smells like the kitchen that brings him back memories of you and him attempting to fix the coffee machine whilst laughing together, your smile imprinted in his mind, phone screen that still makes him unconsciously grin even though its been months since he’s left japan of that selfie with yours and his cheeks squished against each other, beaming at the camera as though it would be the last time right before he enters the gate to somewhere else that he wonders if you too look at it a little longer before you enter your phone, or hand sanitizer that smells exactly like the one you used to use, and gave to him whenever you two were out together that reminds him of home, reminds him of you.

and he’s sure his teammates dont miss the subtle changes to him. how his diet has changed strangely — desserts that fill his meal and sweets that he munches on in the dorm room that he used to buy from the convenience store for you to eat together in class and then in his room that tastes a little less sweet now that its not from your mouth to his, hotter food that you’ve made him grown used to in contrast to his old days eating leftovers and microwaveable meals from the fridge that still burns his tongue a little, sticking out his tongue as though he’s on field at the temperature even now the same way you do too, picking at his vegetable unconsciously the same way you do before pushing it onto his plate whilst smiling, each pickled vegetable even now resembling you in his mind as he pushes it around his plate. how he’s behaving all strangely too in contrast to the rin who they met just a few weeks ago at neo egoist league — how he’s more accustomed to laughing in the same tone you do, having to cup his mouth at the realisation, looking away awkwardly before being tackled by shidou (that broke out into half a fight), how he fiddles even more with his things than before as though they were your hands that he finds comfort in interlocking and fiddling with whilst lying right beside yours, how he looks a little longer at his phone screen that almost made shidou grab his phone (to his luck, he managed to dodge the attack and not get into a fight whilst in it: messaging you that as though expecting a praise). or even just the way he talks now — the tone and accent melting and merging into yours and his own mid sentence, your catchphrases popping out of his mouth unconsciously like bubblegum that draws strange looks (they dont understand it, he thinks), references to yours and by extension his favourite games and shows that flies by everyone else’s head that he misses your laugh that should ring along with his lame jokes.

and rin’s even more sure that the media doesnt miss how he’s changed from just that few weeks. how his closet doesn’t quite fit him right — sanrio and chikawa sweaters that are both a little too tight to have belonged to him and a little uncharacteristic for him to sport on his day out, silver necklaces that they just cant see the heart of, chalking it up to a new impulsive purchase despite him never wearing any in his winning match, silly keychains on the bag he brings out that catches the camera flash just right into the newspapers. how his last interview went even: seeming more nervous whilst attempting to make eye contact with the camera (knowing youre watching him live), stuttering a little too much whilst answering a question about romantic relationship, how his glued up paper ring catches the whole internet. how his internet presence (without PR) reflects something the internet wants to dig a little more — from his instagram stories about another game win whether that be on valorant or league of legends with a duo with a censored tag (of yours), screenshots of movies and shows he’s watching with the side of facetime featuring your face censored with colour brushes from the tools section, outfit pictures that are first vetted by you and then posted with a uncharacteristically cute water bottle you bought for him as a joke that he still uses to this very day.

its now that he can’t be fully with you that rin wonders if he’s taken advantage of all these years you’ve been there for him, each memory haunts him through his own unconscious movements, speech and thoughts: as though you’ve fully melted yourself on him, your soul and his intertwined and ribs replacing each others: becoming one another. missing, longing is not a strong enough word for it all — heartache when he lies in his bed all alone yearning for your warmth hands that lingers on his body, cuddling him at night that makes him dream of days long after his career in a small apartment all decorated by whatever you want living a life with just you and him, that tightening of his heart whenever he sees you in his everyday life: those red roses that he used to buy from the school shop, any song form the playlist you and him collated that he plays everyday, every second he can, things you’ve bought for him that he’s brought along this practically eons long trip to france, the dryness in his mouth when he looks at your face through facetime: noting every single changes from the way your fringe has gotten longer, to the small leftover seaweed bites form the corner of your mouth, wondering how you were just so perfect in his eyes. its not human he feels: this hunger and craving he feels deep in his ribs, in his guts, in his very bone and blood, every second he counts, every day he strikes off from his calendar, every football match he wins just for a chance for you and him to reunite.

and this time, he’s sure of one thing, no matter what his PR agency thinks, no matter what fans thinks, no matter what the world thinks: rin wants to kiss you, melting his lips against yours as he holds up the winning world cup trophy, in front of the whole field, in front of the whole audience, in front of the whole world — because if there’s anything he knows now is that you and him are one matching puzzle piece, you and him are one soul merged together dictated by the universe, you and him are meant to be: and he’ll love you for the rest of eternity.

While John and Paul were busy trying to decide whether they were going to kiss or kill each other every day in the studio, George falls onto Ringo's shoulders once again as he always did whenever he felt unseen. George didn't mind if he had to lose his position in the band, as long as he had Ringo. He had lost Ringo once from the fighting and ego and while it was only for a week or two, it was the most miserable week of his life. Maybe that was why he wanted Ringo to have a piece of him, just so he knew he would always be connected to him. Maybe it was selfishness on his part but who was anyone to blame a poor old Deer for not wanting to lose the one person that made him feel seen and heard, the one beast in the whole world that would view him as equal wherever and whenever?

In the midst of fighting, Ringo had shyly told George about the song he wrote while he was away and while George had never thought of Ringo as being particularly "spiritual", he was surprised at the song he presented to him. A childish tune in the ears of the other two freaks fighting over leadership, yet to George it was the most profound tune he had ever heard.

Ringo had told him about his little trip to the underwater city. Sea creatures, unlike land dwellers, had no qualms over predation, they believed it was just part of life to eat and be eaten. To many others it would just sound like Ringo the Lion just wanted a reason to eat people, but George knew better. His partner had always detested himself, as a Lion, as a Carnivore, hell he barely saw himself as being a Person sometimes. To hear Ringo speak about the sea folks in such a way made George's heart ache as his partner truly believed that the only way he could be happy about himself is if he were born in a different circumstances. There were no qualms underwater, and Ringo wouldn't mind being born as a shrimp because there was nothing wrong with it. It was just life. Simple as.

It was so... Ringo. To want to escape from the fighting, avoid the violence, to live together in harmony with his best friends, safe and sound as they happily sing and dance together just like how they dreamed they would. No Carnivores, no Herbivores, just them, under the sea, in an octopus's garden...

Hi again 💕 I hope I'm not coming off as annoying or antagonistic, because I'm genuinely interested in this topic and have been obsessively thinking about it for days now...

Don't apologize for the long response, I love them <3 (I could talk about Sy for hours too hehe). I don't know if you're on Reddit, but before seeing your response to my ask I was already there asking the community about LAR!Sylus too because I wanted to see everyone's opinion on it. Got a lot of responses that boiled down to > Sylus acted the way he did because he was desperate for MC to remember him < and > Sylus resented MC, maybe even hated her for an event that hasn't been showed in the story yet <

Both that you pointed out and expanded on really well in your post. And since I already left really long replies to those comments there lol, I thought it was better to show you the most organized one instead of filling your inbox by making the same points again here.

An addition too, having read the new event story and seen your post: I agree that Sylus probably wasn't angry at MC when they met again. He looks at her with love and talks about her like she's very precious to him and he's more sad than anything about parting ways. It's another reason him being terrible to MC on purpose seems very unlikely.

With what we larned about Sylus in the new chapters, MC has been the driving force for most of his actions in the story. He loves her more than anything and wants to protect her. He's loved every version of this woman, and was waiting for her to reach out for him for years after first finding her again. He values her choices, respects the fact she doesn't remember him and doesn't try to go and meet her. It's not even his idea to take her to Gaia, and when she asks if he brought her there to remember, this is his response

Making it seem like he wasn't in a rush at all. He knew she'd get there eventually, and decided to wait for her to come searching for answers on her own terms.

To me, this doesn't fit the narrative of him being so desperate he felt the need to be forceful, and when he did it, didn't realize he was going too far, even though he knows MC from multiple timelines. + has known of this one for years, aware of how different her life is in this timeline.

I think the writers didn't consider how Sylus knowing about the research center from the very beginning would mess the with idea of him really wanting MC to remember him but seeing himself in a corner where he had to make her get her memories back through the worse ways possible because he had no other options. If he knew and had that much time in-between meeting this version of MC for the first time, learning about her childhood, watching her from afar, and reuniting with her, his reasoning to be desperate and impulsive crumbles. He wouldn't have been surprised by any of her actions and reactions to him, and he would've had the most logical solution to getting her memories back in the palm of his hands. Right...?

This is all making me wish for a rewrite of their reunion in LAR... 😤😖 Sorry if I'm bothering you with my ramblings. Thank you so so much for listening and taking the time to answer me. You're very cool and I love your blog, truly

Oh no I don't think you're being antagonistic! It's fine to have different interpretations ♡ I never claim mine to be more correct or more valid than anyone else's, so in my book it's absolutely fine to disagree with me. After all, none of us actually know the truth yet.

I personally wouldn't chalk up Sylus' incomprehensible actions to poor writing so much as that we're simply lacking too much context as of right now. Because we know that Sylus is a very carefully planned character (he's been in development since 2019) and I do have a huge amount of trust and faith in his team since I have yet to see a single instance of bad writing from them. I think they're phenomenal, and I trust them to know what they're doing with such a carefully planned and lovingly crafted character as Sylus.

I will readily admit to you that the reasoning I gave you has its flaws and issues, the same ones you point out. But as of right now, that truly is the best explanation I can provide you with, and that I can make sense of with what we know re: Sylus and what imo could drive him to act like that. As in out of character and seemingly inexplicably. But in a way, that lines up well with being desperate. Like I stated in my first post, being in an unexpected situation can make you act strange and out of character. It's certainly happened to me, and it's happened to people around me who are usually very calm and well put together. Stress and frustration and hurt tends to make you react in ways you wouldn't otherwise do. And Sylus for all his intelligence and usual calmness and careful planning, is – for lack of better word – human (even though he biologically is not but I mean that he is not infallible. And he is demonstrably capable of losing his head a bit, as it were. LAR is proof enough)

And imo it is pretty plain that Sylus is desperate in Philip's workshop. Just by his facial expressions, particularly during and after his "Make it as strong as possible",

Which brings me to another point you make re: Sylus knowing who MC is and how she would and wouldn't react. Here I have to somewhat disagree with you. Yes, it's true he knows her innate character and has spent time with her in at least two different lifetimes.

But in said lifetimes, MC has had a rough and inhumane upbringing. She has been primed as a weapon essentially in both timelines, and as such doesn't have the same normal childhood or formative years as Linkon MC remembers. Sorceress MC for example holds different values and motivations. She is angry, she is vengeful, she is violent. She is akin to a wildcat, basically. Not to mention that the dynamic she had with Sylus was mutually rougher than present timeline. And Nebula MC had a similar upbringing as Sorceress MC (primed to fight, taken advantage of, no family or friends) so what I'm saying is that the previous versions Sylus knew have had wholly different circumstances than current MC who remembers a loving childhood with grandma and Caleb, and a pretty normal upbringing. Of course these different circumstances would shape the way she responds to situations in each life. And if we look at Sorceress MC vs Linkon MC there are differences, because of again their very different circumstances. So she doesn't respond the way Sylus would expect her to/is used to.

Let's for example look at an instance where Sylus uses dark humor that falls flat, and which I don't think he expected them to.

Because past MC and him shared that slightly darker dynamic and were more similar due to similar circumstances of being hardened by trauma

Then there is his confident "you can handle it" comment when MC is scared of the alteration (proof that Sylus doesn't know all there is to know about current MC and what she can handle or not but just assumes) and – as you say – his shock and pain over learning that MC is disgusted by him over his actions. He obviously didn't expect MC to react like that. Because the past her probably wouldn't. In addition to the fact (or so I see it) that Sylus just genuinely lost sight of himself for a bit in his goal and desperation to resonate with MC. I mean, clearly he did. As he himself recognizes, hence why he is so shaken up and why he betters himself.

And that's why I personally love that scene, as painful as it is. Because it adds layers and depth to Sylus. It humanizes him, ironically enough. It makes him feel both flawed, but also shows that he is mature and capable of change and of recognizing his own faults and failures. It is a hugely important moment.

Now let's get to the point you bring up about Sylus knowing that MC doesn't have her past memories. I agree with that. There is no way he'd expect her to since he certainly read her files. He knows what she's gone through.

Moreover, Sylus has himself experienced being reborn. And the way I interpret the third timelock key, is that – like MC – he initially didn't have them. But one day – whilst facing her in the Arena – memories of their past that should have been forgotten suddenly resurface. Their souls recognize each other, and after, they make a pact to run away together. Which they do.

Whilst not explicitly stated whether MC too regained her memories, I personally believe that she did – or at least fragments. Because if Sylus remembered in that moment, why wouldn't she? It's a fair assumption, I think. And also I think with that being the case, Sylus' reaction in LAR makes more sense.

Let's look at Sylus' plan for reuniting with MC – which was not to meet the way they did in LAR. His plan had been for her to go to Elysium and order the Sweet Evil Trap, and meet that way.

My current thoughts – which will probably be proven false but which does make sense imo with what we know right now – Sylus had hoped that the same thing that happened in the Arena would happen at Elysium. They would come face to face, either their soulbond or Sylus' right eye would trigger something within MC, her memories would come back, and it would be like last time. They'd come together and form a team. MC would recognize him and trust him. They'd be able to resonate.

But as we know, things did not turn out like that. Sylus did not plan for Grandma and Caleb to be blown up, nor to be blamed for it. He did not plan for MC to hate him.

And I don't believe that he anticipated for her memories not returning like last time (as is my current hypothesis). Why else would he say "I guess you don't remember anything"? Followed by "allow me to jog your memory" and forcing her to stare into his eye, which we do know for a fact triggers visions of her past.

I do currently think that that was the point of Sylus telling her to "look at me". To trigger memories. At least that is what he states in that scene.

When that doesn't work... that's when the hurt and the frustration and the desperation sets in. Because he hadn't expected this. Nor had he – obviously – expected for her not to not be able to resonate, or for her Evol to be weak. That's why he takes her to Philip. To get answers, in addition to to altering her to strengthen her resonance.

I think one important thing to remember here is that Sylus was actually absent for a while during and before Under Deepspace. That's why Sherman took over. There were even rumors in the N109 Zone that Sylus was dead atp. That's how long he'd been gone. That's why Sherman was able to do all that he did.

We don't know exactly where Sylus was or what he was doing in his absence (other than that he looks in on MC at two points). But let's say he wasn't watching her all the time. For all he knew Josephine or someone else may have done something to MC during that time.

That's why I think he asks Philip if "they" put in a suppressor. Clearly he doesn't know all that goes on with MC or he wouldn't have asked that. So again, he doesn't have all answers re: MC, and is not sure how to proceed.

Ok so I'll end this here. Please remember that these are all just my thoughts with the current (little) info we have. And despite the flaws with it, it remains what makes the most sense to me as of now because I simply cannot think of any other, and I genuinely don't believe that this is an issue of poor writing as opposed to us simply not having all the puzzle pieces.

So in conclusion – I am not claiming that this interpretation is the correct one. Absolutely not, and I wouldn't be surprised if the story disproves me.

But these are my current thoughts and the best analysis I can provide. I just don't think it is possible to make a theory that makes perfect sense as of right now because we're missing too much crucial info. We'll just have to wait and see.

And if anyone has different interpretations, then that's fine and completely valid ^^ we're all just doing the best with what we've got

One thing i really love about Deb and the way they have handled her is that since s1 they are telling us that the late night show is her lifelong dream the thing she would give anything and sacrifice to have, but as the season go on, you actually realize that it was never about The Late Night Show at all. It started as a coping mechanism, an hour of escape of an abusive childhood, and it became about connection, love, partnership, authenticity, vulnerabilty. It's such an interesting thing

OOF YES. I'm always obsessed with digging past a character's surface desire to find the core motivation, and Deborah's explanation of why she wanted late night fed me for a week. (Made all the better by the parallel to Ava's own relationship to comedy originally being about finding connection when her life was consumed by loneliness!!!)

I think it's absolutely beautiful narrative that Deborah's drive for late night was all about safety and comfort - wanting to live in the hour where her father wasn't a threat and her family was safe and happy - and she was finally able to give up that dream because she has now found that same sense of safety and comfort in Ava's partnership.
