1. Spend the time with the language

Listen to the language (for example, my podcast—by the way, I'm working on new episodes), read things written in Spanish, listen to songs, or watch movies. If you know people who speak Spanish, spend time with them, even if you're just listening.

2. Do what you like to do

It's important to do the things you enjoy. For example, if you like to read, read more; if you like to watch movies, watch more of them. You'll enjoy the learning process more if you focus on activities you love. This also applies to the topics you choose. For example, if you enjoy reading and have an interest in art, look for art books in Spanish

3. Learn to notice

Noticing will be the most important skill you develop if you want to become fluent in Spanish. First, you need to absorb a lot of the language, and while doing so, pay close attention to details consciously. When you notice something, write it down, underline it, or make a small note so you can review it later and remember it. If you have a language partner, share your findings with them—discussing what you’ve noticed will help you internalize it and eventually use it automatically. For pronunciation, try to listen carefully and imitate how the language is pronounced and the intonation used. This will help you notice and improve your understanding of the language.

4. Words over grammar

If you learn words naturally through plenty of listening and reading, the grammar will eventually fall into place. You can review grammar rules if you’d like, but it’s better to focus more on learning words. Just remember to learn these words from meaningful content, not from isolated vocabulary lists—our brains retain words more effectively when they’re in context.

hi! I'm an incoming Smithie who wants to live on the Quad and I as just wondering why you decided to leave Scales to live in Cushing!

Hey!! So the reason why I left Scales to live in Cushing was because and I’m going to be honest and say that the environment became toxic for me to live in. As a person of color, there were a lot of things that happened that made me feel unsafe. I was also one of the house’s Social Justice and Equity Reps and the house president of Scales this past year barely listened to me and disrespected me (I’m not going to go into the details of this). I didn’t feel welcome to be apart of the house community so overall Scales was not a good fit for me. 

In terms of why Cushing, before I moved there, I had a lot of friends who lived in Cushing so I was spending a lot of time there anyway. I saw that the environment was very different from Scales and my now housemates were so welcoming and friendly to me even though I didn’t live there. I also felt completely safe there as a person of color. When I moved in, I was welcomed with open arms and everyone has been so friendly to me. I now feel like I have found a house that is the right fit for me. 

This was just my experience. My advice to you is to see what house you get placed in, see what the climate is, if you don’t like it see if the house/house community grows on you (you’ll be new to Smith and maybe nervous so everything may seem scary) and something that I wish I had known sooner is that it is okay to move houses if you feel like your house isn’t the right fit for you. Another piece of advice is to make friends outside of your house. For me this was easy because I did the Bridge Program but if you don’t do that. As a fellow shy at first person, I know this may seem scary, but take risks and talk to people. I learned this year that the people you end up closest to can come from the most unexpected places.
