PLAYING POST OFFICE
Lucille Ball and the Mail
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball gets the mail at the end of the driveway to her Chatsworth home, Desilu Ranch, circa 1940s.
“Lady, we don’t mind the rain, or the snow, or the sleet. It’s kooks like you that drive us nuts!” ~ Postmaster, “Lucy & The Missing Stamp” (1964)
Tumblr media
In 1943, Lucille Ball performed on the radio program “Mail Call,” a show only available to the troops overseas and not broadcast stateside. The term mail call was used when soldiers would get letters from home.
“My Favorite Husband” (1948-1951)
Tumblr media
Jay Novello played Mr. Negley the mailman on several episodes of Lucille Ball’s radio series.
In “The Sleigh Ride” (1949) Mr. Negley uses his mail delivery motorcycle to pull the holiday sleigh, but the load proves to much and the milkman’s old horse is pressed into service instead.
In “Liz The Matchmaker” (1949) Katie the maid decides that after three years of dating Mr. Negley that their relationship is not going anywhere, so she enlists Liz’s help.
Tumblr media
In “Mother-in-Law” (1949), Liz (Lucille Ball) correctly assumes that Katie the maid (Ruth Perrot) is so happy because Mr. Negley the mailman has flirted with her. Katie says they were “playing post office.”
KATIE: “He’s so creative. He said my mouth was like a postage stamp. Then he canceled me!”
Katie hands her the mail and Liz finds a letter from her mother-in-law.
LIZ: “No one else addresses a letter ‘To George Cooper Only’ marked personal all over and then seals it with Scotch tape!”
Tumblr media
“George Attends a Teenage Dance” (1948) ~ George and Liz chaperone a high school dance and we learn that ‘playing post office’ is a game, not just an institution. Post Office is a kissing party game played at teenage parties. It has been referred to in popular culture since at least the 1880s. The group playing is divided into two groups. One group goes into another room which is called "the post office”. To play, each person from the outer group individually visits “the post office”. Once there, they get a kiss from everyone in the room. They then return to the original room.
Tumblr media
The game of Post Office is mentioned again in “George Needs A Raise” (1949). In "The Charm School" (1954), Ethel mentions that Fred suggested they play Post Office the previous night when a beautiful guest arrived at their dinner party. In “Kiddie Parties Inc.” (1963) Vivian says she played Post Office when she was younger.
JIMMY: “Do you know how to play Post Office, Mrs. Cugat?” LIZ: “Know how? When I was your age they used to call me Jim Farley.”
James Farley was the the 53rd US Postmaster General from 1933 to 1940.
Tumblr media
Hans Conried played a weary mailman in “Valentine’s Day” (1949).
LIZ: “Are you picking up the mail?”
MAILMAN (sarcastically): “No, I’m a Confederate soldier and these are messages for General Lee.”
In 1949, General Robert E. Lee’s face was on a postage stamp commemorating the 200th anniversary of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
"I Love Lucy” (1951-1960)
Tumblr media
“Drafted” (1951) ~ A letter from Fort Dix makes Lucy and Ethel think that Fred and Ricky have been drafted. The flap of the envelope is open, so Lucy reasons it is okay to read Ricky’s mail. Re-sealing Ricky’s letter from Fort Dix, Ethel says “I’ve had lots of practice at this.”
Tumblr media
Early in the episode, Lucy gets a postcard from the Bishers, who are on vacation in Florida. The comedy trope of the landlord / landlady (Ethel) reading the tenants’ mail to keep up on gossip is used here!
Tumblr media
The premise of a letter from the Draft Board will be used again on “The Lucy Show” in 1966, when Lou C. Carmichael is mistakenly called up.
Tumblr media
Unmailed and unfinished love letters to a former boyfriend haunt Lucy in “Lucy Changes Her Mind” (1953). When Ricky insists she finish everything she starts, she finishes the love letter to Tom Henderson and it mistakenly gets mailed!
Tumblr media
The “I Love Lucy” Comics created a similar storyline for an issue in 1954.
Tumblr media
Mailed postcards once again cause trouble in “Fan Magazine Interview” (1954) when a publicity scheme for the Tropicana maquerades as a ‘date’ with Ricky Ricardo. When Lucy finds one of the postcards, she naturally thinks Ricky is cheating!  She tracks down the woman: Minnie Finch (Kathryn Card).
Tumblr media
Turns out Minnie’s neighbors (Elvia Allman and Sunny Boyne) got similar invitations for ‘dates’ in the mail.
Tumblr media
“The Passports” (1955) ~ Lucy has trouble proving where and when she was born. At the end, Lucy gets a letter from her mother enclosing her birth certificate and saving the day.
Tumblr media
“Tennessee Ernie Visits” (1954) ~ Lucy gets a very wordy letter from her mother to explain the presence of Ernie Ford. Naturally the letter comes after Ernie has arrived.
Tumblr media
“Tennessee Ernie Hangs On” (1954) ~ Lucy discovers an unmailed letter from Ernie to his Ma in Bent Fork, causing Lucy and Ricky to feel guilty for scheming to get rid of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets into Pictures” (1955) ~ Ricky discovers a postcard Lucy’s written to  Lillian Appleby, fibbing about having a part in a picture. In a rare blooper, Ricky calls Mrs. Appleby Lillian instead of Carolyn. She was only named Lillian in her very first appearance.
Tumblr media
To apply the stamp, Lucy borrows Ricky’s tongue.
LUCY: “I've stamped so many cards, I'm all out of lick. Now, remember, don't read them.” RICKY: “Why not?” LUCY: “Because it's not nice to read other people's postcards.” RICKY: “Well, you and Ethel do it at home all the time.” LUCY: “Not until after they're mailed. It's illegal to read them before they're postmarked.”
Tumblr media
“Don Juan is Shelved” (1955) ~ To save Ricky’s picture, Lucy decides to flood the studio with fan mail. She organizes an assembly line in her hotel room to churn out 500 handwritten and stamped fan letters.
Tumblr media
“Paris at Last!” (1956) ~ Lucy goes to the American Express Office to change some money into Francs. Fred is in charge of collecting the mail, which has been forwarded to the American Express Offices along their tour route.
Tumblr media
Although primarily known for their credit cards today, in the 1950s American Express was an international banking company that issued travelers checks and was a trusted source of currency exchange. Their international offices were equipped with reading and writing rooms which offered the latest American newspapers and magazines. They also maintained a post office where clients’ letters could be forwarded.
Tumblr media
“Return Home from Europe” (1956) ~ Packing to sail home, a surprise in the mail changes their plans.
RICKY: “Hey, did they have any mail for us at American 'Spress?” LUCY: “Oh, yes, I almost forgot. Oh, a letter from Mother! Here's a telegram for you.” RICKY: “How do you like that? A telegram and she forwards it in the regular mail. It takes three weeks to get here!”
It turns out to be very important - an offer to play at the Roxy in New York - staring immediately!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Raises Chickens” (1957) ~ After placing an ad for someone to help with the egg business, Ricky finds a reply in the mailbox - from Fred!. He put the letter in the box himself, saving the cost of a stamp and replacing it with an Easter Seal!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets the Mustache” (1959) ~ Lucy opens a letter from Ricky’s Uncle Alberto in Cuba, then must figure out a way to get it back into the envelope before Ricky comes home!  She employs a knitting needle using a technique she saw on television.
STAMPS
Tumblr media
MAILBOXES
Tumblr media
“The Lucy Show” (1962-1968)
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Missing Stamp” (1964) ~ Lucy mistakenly uses a collectible stamp on an envelope she’s mailed then realizes its value.
Tumblr media
She tracks it to the post office where she does everything she can to retrieve it.
Tumblr media
Herb Vigran plays the postman. Robert S. Carson plays the postmaster.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes Into Politics” (1964) ~ As volunteers working on Mr. Mooney’s campaign for Danfield Comptroller, Lucy and Viv are in charge of stamping hundreds of envelopes!
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Caught Up in the Draft” (1966) ~ The mail that contains her draft notice is delievered by Joe the Postman (Sid Gould).
Tumblr media
Also in the mail is a letter from Lucy’s son, who is away at Military School. In probably the largest blooper in the history of “The Lucy Show,” the letter is signed “Jimmy Carmichael” instead of “Jerry Carmichael”.  It was Lucille Ball who insisted to the production people that it was Jimmy, remembering the actor’s name (Jimmy Garrett) and not the character’s!
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Bean Queen” (1966) ~ At the office, Mr. Mooney notes that it costs five cents postage to send a letter. This rate went into effect in 1963, rising a penny, and went up again another penny in 1968.
“Here’s Lucy” (1968-1974)
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Working Daughter” (1968) ~ When Kim must have her social security number to get a job at a boutique, Lucy confuses it for the Zip Code!  The US Post Office introduced Zip Codes on July 1, 1963.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Protects Her Job” (1969) ~ Kim disguises herself as new secretary -  gum-chewing Shirley Shoppenhauer. She returns from the post office with 500 postage stamps. Unfortunately for Harry, they are all balled up in a bunch and jammed into her purse.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Lawrence Welk” (1970) ~ Lucy gets a letter from her old friend Viv, saying that she’s coming to visit. Naturally, the letter arrives moments before Viv walks through the door!

Just Relax || Ricky & Lisa
Tumblr media
@ricky--henderson
“There is nothing wrong with my eating habits...” Lisa mumbled in distaste as she tossed the pamphlet to the bedside table. They had run multiple tests, and kept her here for what felt like weeks. Yet the only conclusion they could come to was stress and a weakening of the heart. What the hell did that even mean? She didn’t have time for this. She didn’t have time to sit in this bed. Just relax, they insisted. She couldn’t relax. She had a house to run and a four year old to take care of.
Plus there was Ricky. The last time they had seen each other, they were kissing. Sitting in this bed, all she could do was worry. There was way to much time for her to just sit and think, stir things over, and worry even more. They kept trying to use the word anorexia but how could she eat when her nerves were such a mess? It made her nauseous just thinking about it.
She picked up her phone for the sixth time in the last hour, looking for a text from someone. More specifically from Ricky. Was he trying to keep his distance expecting Greg to be here? Well, he was wrong about that. Greg had to be with Keegan, unless he had Kane with Keegan. But either way, Greg wasn’t here. She wanted to text him, but at the same time she didn’t want to pressure him. After all, he had more to lose than she did if Greg were to ever find out that they had kissed.
She heard a knock on the door and set her phone down on her lap. “Come in...” She greeted in a soft worn voice. She looked over at the lunch tray and shook her head. She had maybe taken two bites, but she just wasn’t hungry. Let the lecture begin... She thought to herself before looking up, hearing that familiar voice. Ricky... “--hi.” She spoke in a soft voice, suddenly feeling very shy and almost ashamed of herself.

MADGE BLAKE
May 31, 1899 - February 19, 1969
Tumblr media
Madge Blake (née Cummings) was best remembered for her roles as Margaret Mondello on “Leave It to Beaver”, Flora MacMichael on “The Real McCoys,” and Aunt Harriet Cooper on “Batman”. Born in Kansas just before the turn of the last century, her father discouraged her from becoming an actress, so she did not enter acting until later in life. During World War II, Blake and her husband James Lincoln Blake worked on construction of the detonator for the atomic bomb and received a citation for their work from the U.S. government.
Tumblr media
Blake’s first cousin was actor Milburn Stone (”Gunsmoke”). They both acted in the 1955 film The Private War of Major Benson starring Chaleton Heston and Sal Mineo.
Tumblr media
Gene Kelly had a special affection for her and included her in each of his films including An American in Paris, Brigadoon, and Singing in the Rain as Dora Bailey (above).
Tumblr media
Her first collaboration with Lucy and Desi was as Aunt Anastasia in The Long, Long Trailer, which premiered in February 1954.
Tumblr media
A month later she was seen as Mrs. Mulford (of Jeri’s Hats), on “I Love Lucy” in “Ricky Loses His Temper” (ILL S3;E19). A sly salesperson, Mrs. Mulford entices Lucy to buy a new hat, despite her promise to Ricky that she wouldn’t.
MRS. MULFORD: “It’s half price!”  LUCY: “I’ll take it!”
Technically, The Long, Long Trailer was filmed first, so the movie was her introduction to Lucille Ball and probably resulted in this series appearance.
Tumblr media
In January 1957, she played Martha, a prospective new tenant at 623 East 68th Street who is afraid of heights, alongside her caring husband Herbert (Ralph Dumke), in “Lucy and Superman” (ILL S6;E13). Imagine her shock when she spies Lucy dressed as Superman perched on the ledge!
HERBERT: “Was it a bird?” MARTHA: “No.” HERBERT:  “Was it a plane?” MARTHA: “No.” HERBERT: “Well, what was it, dear?” MARTHA: “It was Superman!”
It is somewhat coincidental that Blake should star with TV’s Superman (George  Reeves), nearly ten years before being cast in TV’s “Batman.”  Just as coincidentally, Blake and Dumke both appeared in The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956) and Loving You (1957).
Tumblr media
Her final appearance with Lucille Ball was on a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show”, “Lucy, the Camp Cook” (TLS S3;E6). Blake plays a motorist who stops to help a stranded Mr. Mooney. Lucy and Viv are hiding just out of sight.  Clearly, she has no idea that she is helping out two women as well as the handsome banker.
DRIVER (flirty): “Let me go in first and dust the seat...big boy!”
THE DESILU CONNECTIONS
Tumblr media
Desilu’s many television shows often blurred the lines; characters being spun-off, or crossing over to another show. Madge Blake’s characters existed in several TV worlds, although she may not have appeared in the actual cross-over episodes.
Tumblr media
For example, Blake made two appearances on the Ann Sothern sitcom “Private Secretary” both times playing Mrs. Bernard Hugo - once in 1953, and again in  1956. During 1957, Sothern’s character Susie MacNamara appeared as Lucy Ricardo’s friend in the first “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” titled “Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana” (LDCH S1;E1).
Tumblr media
After her first appearance on “I Love Lucy” Blake was cast as Anita Henderson on the CBS / Desilu series “December Bridge,” a role she played in 1955 and 1956. She did one more episode in 1957 as Margaret. The show featured many actors who also appeared on “I Love Lucy.” In 1957, Executive Producer Desi Arnaz appeared as himself.
Tumblr media
In another cross-over connection, Blake made four appearances on “The Danny Thomas Show” from 1954 to 1961, each time playing a different character. In 1958, to symbolize the show’s move to CBS, the Williams family moved into the Ricardo home in Westport. In return, Lucy and Desi guest-starred on “The Danny Thomas Show” as the Ricardos.
Tumblr media
On February 9, 1961, Blake did a guest-spot on the short-lived CBS Desilu series “Guestward, Ho!” Ironically, the leading role was originally intended for Vivian Vance, but the network thought her too associated with Ethel Mertz.
Tumblr media
That same evening, February 9, 1961, Blake also did a guest-spot on the ABC series “Angel” which was filmed on the Desilu lot. She acted opposite Doris Singleton, who had played Carolyn Appleby in “Lucy Meets Superman,” although the two did not share any scenes. The one-season series was created by Jess Oppenheimer, writer of “I Love Lucy.”
Tumblr media
In 1963 and 1965, Blake joined the cast of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” which filmed on the Desilu Lot.
Tumblr media
In 1966, she was cast as Aunt Harriet Cooper on “Batman”, a role she played for 96 episodes and in a 1966 feature film that also had the same cast. She became good friends with star Adam West (Bruce Wayne / Batman). When producers wanted to let Blake go, West intervened and she stayed with the show until illness reduced her ability to work. On the series, Blake worked with many of the same actors who appeared with Lucille Ball: Cesar Romero, Van Johnson, Shelley Winters, Liberace, Tallulah Bankhead, Ethel Merman. Milton Berle. Rudy Vallee, Ida Lupino, Howard Duff, Stafford Repp, Victor Buono, Vincent Price, Edward Everett Horton, Vito Scotti, Norma Varden, Tristram Coffin, Ellen Corby, Sammy Davis Jr., Allen Jenkins, Art Linkletter, Alan Hale Jr.,  Jessyln Fax, and Alberto Morin.
Tumblr media
In 1967, Blake did a single episode of “Gomer Pyle USMC” (a spin-off of “The Andy Griffith Show”).  A year earlier, Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors) made a cameo appearances on “The Lucy Show” (TLS S5;E9) in which Lucy Carmichael is mistaken for Lou C. Carmichael and drafted!
Tumblr media
Blake’s final appearance was a 1970 TV movie “The Shameful Secrets of Hastings Corner” produced by Harry Ackerman, who was a CBS executive who worked on (and appeared on) “I Love Lucy.” It was aired posthumously as Blake died in February 1969 at the age of 69.

Mid-season review: Hawthorn
Hawthorn’s mid-season report card AFL.com.au reporter Marc McGowan joins the team to discuss how the Hawks are tracking
Shaun Burgoyne and Jack Gunston have been left to shoulder plenty of the load for Hawthorn
The season so far
There was scepticism about Hawthorn’s bold choice to let champions Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis go – on top of Brad Hill seeking a trade home to Western Australia – but few expected the Hawks to fall so quickly. They have lost four times by 51 points or more, own a dismal 4-8 win-loss record and are second-last despite playing an extra game than most of the bottom-eight clubs. Josh Gibson and maybe Luke Hodge are retirement-bound – Shaun Burgoyne seems likely to play on – but the positive is the emergence of NAB AFL Rising Star contender Ryan Burton, Tim O’Brien, Blake Hardwick, Daniel Howe and James Cousins, and the continued development of Kaiden Brand. Ex-Swan Tom Mitchell has been nothing short of outstanding, including an extraordinary 50-disposal outing against Collingwood in round nine.
Quarters won: 20 (out of 48)
Players used: 35 (equal League-high)
Yet to play: Jonathon Ceglar, Conor Glass, Oliver Hanrahan, Mitchell Lewis, Kieran Lovell, Harry Morrison, Conor Nash, Jonathan O’Rourke, Marc Pittonet, Luke Surman
Stats leaders
Disposals: Tom Mitchell (423) Marks: Tom Mitchell (72) Goals: Jarryd Roughead and Luke Breust (19) Tackles: Tom Mitchell (86) Metres gained: Isaac Smith (478.6) Forward woes: Hawthorn ranks second-last in inside 50 efficiency and marks inside 50
Best win
Round 10 against Sydney. An eighth lost third quarter for the year saw Sydney overrun Hawthorn, but the brown and gold rose to the challenge in the dying minutes to claim a morale-boosting triumph.
One that got away
Round nine against Collingwood. A depleted Hawks line-up led an out-of-sorts Collingwood by 43 points early in the second term, but fell apart amid the Pies’ second-half heroics.
Best and fairest leader: Tom Mitchell
Surprise packet: Ryan Burton
Who’s struggling: Josh Gibson, Ty Vickery, Billy Hartung, James Sicily, Taylor Duryea, Will Langford
Dejected Hawks have become a familiar sight this year. Picture: AFL Photos
Missing in action
There are many candidates, but Grant Birchall (three games) and prized recruit Jaeger O’Meara (four) have played seven matches between them. Both should return shortly after the round 13 bye.
The concern
Third quarters remain a major issue for the Hawks, who have won just three out of 12 this season. The opposition had more scoring shots in two of those winning terms. Coach Alastair Clarkson is yet to publicly offer a theory for what is going wrong, only repeatedly offering a gimmicky line about [insert name of journalist who asks the question] replacing him if they could figure it out.
Pass mark
It’s all about the kids now. Once you start talking about Hawthorn still ‘mathematically’ being able to make the top eight, you know its hopes are as good as shot. Even the coach’s words are less gung-ho in recent times about a late-season revival. Some of the young players look better than advertised, so hopefully they will get an extended senior run.
The coach
Alastair Clarkson has shown unwavering belief in many of those who served him well in the past, but injuries and poor form from some lesser names have forced his hand at selection. Has spoken twice in the past week about his confidence that the core of this playing list can form a successful Hawks line-up in the near future.
How the best 22 has changed
Seven of the below team – Frawley, Stratton, Birchall, Rioli, O’Meara, Hodge and Breust – didn’t play in the last-start Gold Coast loss. Frawley and Rioli are still many weeks away and Clarkson hinted the latter may not return this year. O’Brien, who has enjoyed a breakout season, beats Vickery for a berth, while Hodge comes into the best 22 after a club suspension cost him his round one place.
