sometimes i have a good day and then i remember about this one hakoniwa no coral verse and then i cry. one from the peak wxs verses from one of the peak wxs songs ever, if you even care.

is the what sort of ending do you want and the world hasn't even started yet reference even intentional? Who Knows! (or maybe someone actually knows idk i didn't read koyori's producer note when the teaser dropped nor do i remember if it was ever mentioned). but even if it somehow isn't, then it still drives me insane. especially since hakoniwa no coral is the last song before the disband arc resolved— the donketsu reference was sooo cruel. i was found dead.

the sekahaji reference is pretty interesting as well. since it's paired with donketsu, THE disband arc song, then it could mean that it should be taken as a disband arc ref as too. but wouldn't then the title be twisted as something like "the world has already started" if it was supposed to represent the wxs disbandment or even a new beginning (i actually wanted it to be the title for wxs wl song but lol. i guess the group of four illuminating the world is pretty cute as well)? since sekahaji is wxs' untitled and, therefore, their first song ever, then i guess it could be interpreted as wxs not even forming, however... there's still an "ever" before even beginning — and that makes me lean onto my more preferred interpretation of sekahaji's title. "the world hasn't even started yet" — because wxs still didn't became the big thing, they're not popular actors yet. the world didn't ever even start for *wxs* specifically, because they parted ways and didn't fulfill their dreams as a group. and this would make more sense, because "without ever met you" is right after and why would it repeat. (although this verse doesn't make sense to me because well, nene couldn't fulfill her dreams without wxs. but it's ok, the songs are not strictly canonical, i'll let this slide.)

and because the song, as well as the whole fragment this verse comes from, ends with "i'll sing this song and smile", my sole intepretation of it is "even though we're not a group anymore, i won't let my grief consume me and i'll keep on singing". nene would miss wxs dearly, but she wouldn't ever forget them, their kindness and the experience they gave her if they parted ways. but thanks god they didn't, because it would make this song ever sadder.

conclusion (besides "you should stream hakoniwa no coral"): none. you can form it yourself, because i'm not an analyst, i'm an overthinker and i state common facts by crying over wxs on daily basis. i just wanted to show you this verse because i think about it 24/7. enjoy.

wot 2x4: daughter of the night

A couple more thoughts to add this morning. A minor spoiler for A Crown of Swords.

First, an ad of sorts, lol -- if you liked Rand being tied up for sex but you wish it hadn't been with Lanfear, I do have a 90k Cauthor fic that features Mat tying Rand up for sex and generally follows a "what if we did a show-verse version of The Great Hunt but with Cauthor" (stars fading). Written before we got any teasers that Rand would be involved in bondage scenes, so I am feeling very prophetic! (I mean, he just kinda has 'tie me up' energy even in s1 imo)

I am 100% planning on writing a little sequel to my Rand/'Selene' fic that is set during 2x4 (pre-reveal).

Seeing the saa in Lanfear's eyes at the end was an 'oh shit' moment; can't believe I forgot to mention it. I like the change they've made to have the Great Lord actually keeping his promise (at least to the Chosen themselves) about life everlasting.

Also! She was gonna tell him who she was! That's what this whole set up was about! "Oh, I still loved you after you revealed your big scary secret so you owe me still loving me" (but tying him up first in the likelihood of him freaking out) (kinda a shame because he was INTO being tied up but now she might have traumatized him out of it)

the album is honestly rlly good, like a solid 7/10 overall for me my favourite tracks are 1. icfa (IT SHOULDVE BEEN LONGER…) 2. carat cake 3. box

i like smoothie its very addictive my only issue is that i wish that they did more with the chorus lyrics wise like it gets a bit too much at some point with the repetitive ‘smoothie’ 😭😭 BUT THE SECOND VERSE WAS SOOOO GOOD like that whole renlehae part was genuinely so heavenly chenle’s voice is so crazy to me like he kinda remains my fave voice in nct lol i wish haechan had more lines but at the same time the song is a hip hop rap song so i’m not surprised the rappers got the most parts 😭

ANYWAYS THE MV FELT A BIT…. i hate when they teaser-bait us because they did all those dream scape story line thing just for none of it to be included in the mv and the mv just being a box music video that didn’t have anything to do with fruits or smoothies (except for that jaemin fruit ninja part) like there was potential there but 💔💔💔 also i unfortunately hated all the image teasers except for the dreamscape and cho giseok ones but that’s a different convo lol

Coming Attractions!

Once again, I don’t have a whole lot of updates, alas. But this year is already looking more active, writing-wise, than last year, so I have high hopes!

Precipice!Verse

Probably won’t be out this month, especially since I really need to kick into gear on my BB project, but I have not abandoned it--I’ve put too much into this to abandon it, lol.

Based on feedback from my last question post, I am going to do something where Padme’s ship never landed on Tatooine (they got their repairs elsewhere, I guess) and Anakin and Ahsoka meet and have an Adventure during the Clone War. Specifics to be determined, but it’ll be a fun ride, I’m sure. XD

OTP Meme:

I am very proud of myself for getting all five done last month! And I know...more or less what I’m doing for four of the five for this month (figuring out the Specifics for one of those four, and as yet Undecided for the fifth). I’m really glad I decided to do this, it’s definitely getting me to get stuff out.

The Other Battlestar:

Still needs a better title; but I really do think I’ll get started posting this month (I know I keep saying that but shhh). Not a formal teaser, but because there are some Key OCs in order to make the plot work, so a little bit of info on them!

Vance Kimble - around fifty; actor; went to college with Wallace Gray; will take Baltar’s Politics storylines (which, within the bounds of how far I want to go here, means Caprica’s representative on the Quorum and eventually VP; but if I do change my mind and go past the Pegasus arc, he’ll also team up with Zarek to run for President)

Atia Reyes-Baltar - will take Baltar’s Science storylines (because there is no way to build someone who can do Both the way he does); also at least part of the reason he doesn’t end up on Boomer’s Raptor (because he’s looking for her, he takes a different route when he flees his house)

Daphne Reed - Senior Medical Officer on Pegasus. ...yep, not much else to say about her that doesn’t Give Things Away, lol.

Cornelius Felden - highest-ranking Marine officer on Pegasus (tentatively a Captain since who the fuck knows how Marine officer ranks work we have never seen a Marine commissioned officer); originally from Aerilon.

Simon O’Neill - no, not that one. Or that one. ...no, not that one, either. sorry I couldn’t resist Officially a pediatrician; part of the civilian fleet that Pegasus strips; gets drafted for his medical degree. ((also is there. like. a Convention for tagging Cylon OCs? Especially ones that use their model’s Shared Name?))

There’s an additional selectee for Daphne’s department but Simon is the important one; Ileana Fortuna (an old OC of mine, one of Zarek’s aides) may also make an appearance here and there but will probably not be Significant.

...I think that covers pretty much everything I have in the Immediate pipeline; but there are other things percolating on a more long-range timescale (actually doing a SW/BSG crossover; some of my other SW-alone projects, expanding on a couple of the AUs I’m building for the OTP meme fills, etc.) So...there it is! Relatively short update, like I said, lol.

Also, not writing, but I dug up some old BSG fanmixes I made my first time around in the fandom, and made some Comments about them on my personal blog, if you’re curious: Season 3 mix; Cylon ship mix; Baltar/Six mix.

P1Harmony Harmony: Set In album review

Unsolicited album review (p3!!)

I’ve been a p1ece since debut and I just get so excited about new music, no one asks for these nor cares, but I have fun doing it, so there. Hope everyone’s enjoying the album!!

Warning: long post [1.4k], I got carried away lmao.

Note - this is the first time P1Harmony has done the showcase first, then dropped the MV and then the rest of the album, the order does feel a little funny but it was actually really nice to hear two of the songs yesterday (they sang Better Together at the showcase as well as the title).

As always, I did keep up with the teasers, so it definitely won’t be a total surprise listening to the album. I feel like instead of spoiling it though, I got so hyped so I guess the teasers did their job alright. I also watched the showcase yesterday and heard both songs and I really liked both. 

Bonus: Jiung helped write Better Together!!! Intak and Jongseob always have their rap writing credits but to see a composition credit is just such a joy, especially because we know how much Jiung likes writing music and how much pride he takes in it.

Back Down (+MV)

Alright first things first - holy shit the visuals!!!!! I loved the underground idk ‘lair’ or whatever you can call the hang out spot since they dropped the prologue. It’s amazing, the detail, the decor is perfect. I immediately thought of the Ninja Turtles when I saw it, and I had a good look around on the bird app and found other people had a similar thought so I guess maybe FNC was going for it? If it’s so obvious lol. But I love it so much; the guys said this album is about friendship and I totally see why there’s a sort of reference to the ninja turtles - they’re a cute bunch (of brothers) but also friends and they go on cool missions and stuff so the vibe is perfect.

Okay the song: I could tell from the few seconds we got as teasers that this was going to be a bop but omg it’s so much better than that, it’s a whole banger! (Keeho’s intro, sir, do you have something to say?) There’s something so satisfying about Jongseob’s hard ‘rr’ sound and I love the bass boom in the instrumental. (also the MV - they got super powers or something from getting electrocuted? fun!) Intak’s “bro!” took me out (actually his whole verse did but yea), then the MV transition where they jump up from the sewers to the metro was just so neat omg. I love the sort of New York setting they’re emulating, it really keeps up the reference to the Ninja Turtles. Keeho with those glasses and earrings, he actually looks like he time travelled from the 90s lol. The backpacks make them look like turtles I’m sorry I said it but I find it adorable.

In conclusion, Piwon have a god tier, no-skip discography and when kpoppies find out about them it’s over for everyone. I don’t know how they do it, like every album they put out is consistently brilliant and they manage to stay fresh and do different things while keeping that distinct p1harmony flavour, I really wonder what they put in the fish cake water.

I’m not a person who likes the obsessive fan culture with voting and streaming but honestly I would hope that there’s some way to give piwon a win, they more than deserved it for this whole year, every album/title was incredible and they’ve done so much, I’m so proud of them.

I really hope the guys can have some time off since they really had such a busy year, 3 albums, a tour, extra performances and all the harmony forest stuff too, holy shit, it’s really insane, but it was also so amazing and I hope they’re proud of what they’ve accomplished so far.

fuck my life - it sounds sooo much more lowkey than i expected, but i’m excited. from what i’ve seen, a lot of people are questioning whether this should actually be considered a second title track (instead of a “glorified bside”) because of how lowkey it sounds, but personally it reminds me of home!! i think it’ll be really good hehe im obsessed

super - ngl when i first listened to this i wasn’t the biggest fan, but i am OBSESSED, especially after the second mv teaser dropped. i’m so excited to see how this one turns out

dust - just a cute vocal unit song 🥺 nothing in particular stands out to me but i like the vibes!!

fire - this is where it’s AT. i can’t wait to hear the whole song. i also love how hoshi is the one saying “i got the fire” even though he isn’t in the hip hop unit LOL. this song goes so hard i’m really looking forward to how the verses go

i don’t understand but i luv you - this sounds SO amazing. i wasn’t sure what direction they’d go with this song but i really love what they’ve chosen. it’s probably my favorite of the unit songs (for now at least) <33 i wonder how the choreo will look like for this one :0!!

Some thoughts. I’ve put this off a bit, cause I worked super late last night and was not in a good mood when coming home. I’m still tired and medicated, so I do hope I make sense. I apologize in advance if I don’t lol.

So. Supermodel. I listened to it quickly last night, then decided to let it sing in a bit. Listened to it again today. I’m not a fan. It’s not a super bad song per se. It’s just... Let try to put this feeling in words.

I was slightly optimistic after hearing the teasers, because I did think they were very catchy. After hearing the whole song... I’m still okay with the verses. They’re catchy. They do stick with me. 

I am not okay with the chorus, where Damiano’s voice gets lost and a lot of unnecessary stuff is added to the music. No thank you.

Like said above, I don’t think it’s a bad song per se. It’s an okay pop song. It’s just very much not Måneskin. Which just makes me sad, cause one of the big things I liked about them is how different they are.

I don’t think Max Martin is a bad producer or writer. He has done some great things, things that I liked. Adele, The Weekend, those are some bangers. I just don’t think that he’s the right match for Måneskin. I read the Variety article and I do hope that either they had a lot more own input in the other songs they worked on together or that the feedback from Supermodel will make them realize that this is not it.

I also think this song is way overproduced. If I was in a band like  Måneskin I would always keep in mind how a song will sound live. This one, unless they bring a heavy backing track, is gonna sound nothing like the studio version if it’s just the four of them. 

Which brings me to their Eurovision performance of tonight.

I hear a lot of people complaining about them not playing Zitti e Buoni. And I feel your pain. I don’t think the previous years winner always plays their winning song, but I do think that’s usually the case. And since they will apparently play two songs, I don’t understand why Zitti e Buoni isn’t one of them.

I just read how there was a huge fuss about them not being at the jury show last night, while they were announced. There were stand-ins and they even had a short interview with fake Damiano. What is up with that? I don’t think it’s the band’s fault necessarily, cause apparently a lot of this year has been huge chaos. Maybe Damiano wanted to sit out last night with his ankle and organization just handled it really badly. Either way, this story and the fact that there was zero communication about it (i am taking about the organization, cause like I said, not sure if the band fucked up here) is just such a no-go. Get your act together people.

Lastly, I am curious for the Supermodel performance. I know the music won’t be live, so it still might sound very polished, but I at least want a taste of how it sounds outside the studio. Let’s hope it’s not as bad as it is on single? 

So yes, long story short. I don’t think it’s a horrible song, I’m just really not a fan either. End of rambling, continue as you were.

SO, ODDINARY!

I think I've had enough time to let the songs sit. So first,

Venom, the fucking instrumental is insane and going from the changbin's rap to Seungmin singing isn't so in your face because he sings in the minor key. It's so catchy and definitely one of my favourites on the album. I'm in love with the outro !!

Maniac, I was not expecting that instrumental even though it was in the unit teaser lol. The mv, the choreo is SO nice. CHANGBIN HIP THRUSTS HAJAHAHDBSKN. This is a different vibe for their title tracks but I love it. The rapping was good but I think Felix's stands out to me on this track, not because it was better but because this album you can really tell he was working on his rap.

Charmer is gorgeous, so much fun, amazing and I love it :) but imagine charmer LIVE 😳 also I love the concept of the song and how they use that for both the instrumental and lyrics. Smart kings. Charmer really grew on me even though I liked it the first time. Theres literally five songs fighting for first place for me, like literally HOW.

Anyway, freeze is so fun too. Skz + EDM = magic.

Lonely St. and Waiting for us are together because I would rate them more or less the same. I'm not really into ballads much, or any emotional songs but I like a few. And these two are ones I like !! Waiting for us is giving day6 vibes and I love.

FUCKING MUDDY WATER?!?! The second the instrumental started playing I think I blacked out. I'm in love with hip hop jazz. Felix's rap is so catchy but I already knew that since it's been stuck in my head since they released the mashup video 💀 but it was actually good, the same with hyunjin's lazy rap, that last gaaa before the chorus kills me. I love changbin's verse in this, rappers who use space ❤. This whole song is a vibe.

So basically,

3) Favorite superhero film?

I’m picking top 3 here. I think my favorite is probably into the spider-verse. It’s so well animated, stylistically interesting, and I adore miles morales. I’d been so nervous about this movie, and I had been keeping track of everything since the moment it was announced, but I was terrified the whole time since Sony pictures animation doesn’t have a great track record. The teaser trailer gave me hope, though. I don’t go to the movies that often, but I went to watch it the day it dropped and it honestly exceeded my expectations.

The second film is Venom. The first venom film, the sequel is fun, but there was something so insane about the way the first one came out that it just has a special place in my heart. I love the venom comics, and I was still thoroughly obsessing over Mike Costa’s venom run when this movie was coming out, but I’m gonna be honest, when I saw the trailer I completely disregarded it. It looked over the top edgy in a 90s comic kinda way. I almost never disregard a movie by trailer alone, but they made the movie look like another BvS or Suicide Squad (2016) (derogatory). I genuinely thought it would be like how Morbius turned out. I was so surprised when the reviews dropped and they all said pretty much the same thing— this movie sucks, but it’s sure as fuck fun to watch. I though, hey! That’s my favorite type of movie!! So I gave it a chance, and they were so right. I saw this movie 5 times while it was still in theaters (mostly pirating, but still).

The last movie is The Batman (2022). I actually had a lot of hope for this movie going in, considering how Matt Reeves studied under Jeph Loeb and cited The Long Halloween as a major influence, but I was still a little wary. I really hate the dark knight returns (and frank miller in general), and most Batman movies are to some extent an adaptation of this work. Which sucks. I was really pleasantly surprised by the hopeful turn the movie took, how it denounced miller’s Batman through the use of the Riddler as a parallel. Plus, the cast were all excellent and the visuals were beautiful. I’m looking forward to the sequel and hoping they include robin!

6) Favorite Side Character

I really miss Roxy Leech from Superboy’s solo run. All of kon’s supporting cast disappeared after his solo ended and it sucks. She was like a sister figure to him and she’d bring a lot to comics now. I also love Bernard Dowd. He left such an impression in the few issues he appears in, and now he’s back as Tim’s Boyfriend!! That’s huge! He hasn’t had a chance to shine yet recently, I hope he’s still an absolute bitch. I also miss prudence wood, from Tim’s Red Robin run. She had so much potential, bring her back dc!

(A few months ago I’d have probably had spider-punk on this list, but he’s got a solo now!! Not a side character anymore lol)

8) Favorite team up

Young Justice!!!! YJ 1998 my beloved! What a team! I don’t really care for the animated series, it’s totally unrelated to the comics and I can’t get behind their adaptation of kon. He’s so bland and whiny. YJ 1998 is so funny, the characters are so bizarre and they’re all completely unhinged about each other. Love those guys

13) A villain who genuinely scared you

I don’t know that any particular villain has ever like, really scared me? But I do find something viscerally horrifying about like, all of Al Ewing’s immortal hulk. It’s such a good run. It tackles a lot of heavy themes well. (Shame the artist turned out to be a shitbag, but I refuse to let that ruin the story for me. He didn’t write it, after all.)

I guess I could say the joker here, not because the character himself particularly scares me, but because of what he’s come to mean to incels and those types. It’s dangerous when a character can become a symbol for such hateful groups to rally under.

I watched the 210812 Thrill Ride MCountdown performance and just!! all the arms on display!!!!!!! And those dang singlets ... (Hyunjae also does a 'call me' gesture and winks at the end and I may or may not have just passed out) and I watched the behind video too and it's just A LOT! But Eric's loose singlet with nothing underneath is doing nothing to help my biaswrecker list haha Also! Hyunjae has very nice arms 👀

Yeah I think Hypnotized is my fave from the Maverick album! There's just something super special about it hehe Nuuuuu that interview with vampire teaser for Drink It??!! What are you doing to me!! Also actor!Juyeon RISE! And yeah Sunwoo's whisper in that! And also in Thrill Ride!! They don't know what they do to me~ And the Maverick and Thrilling albums just keep getting better the more I listen to them! I've also been really enjoying Wings, Spring Snow, Prism (every time they say 'baby girl' I break down huhu) and Clover!

And yep, I watched Kingdom for SKZ - I got into them in late 2020 so still a relatively new-ish Stay, I guess. I apparently have this thing for liking massive groups - first SJ, then SEVENTEEN, then SKZ and now apparently TBZ too! Just counting active members in each group, that would mean that I like 10 + 13 + 8 + 11 = 42 guys ...😭

SJ was the first KPop group that I reallllyyyy actively stanned - there was a school performance for 'International Day' in 2012 and a group of students danced to KPop songs including Sorry Sorry and Gee, and I told one of my friends that I liked Sorry Sorry (she was always saying how much she liked KPop), then she gave me some other song / MV recommendations, and I liked Kyuhyun and Ryeowook's voices a lot. But it wasn't until I watched a KDrama with Donghae that I actually became and ELF and very much Donghae-biased (as of June 2013)!

Oooh yes well, SSTBZ is going well! Currently in Bronze II and I'm managing a total weekly score of about 10m as well. Don't really have many LEs because it's just too hard lol but I am trying for this week's event LE - I've always been a strictly F2P player but I've saved so much money over the last 2 years from working from home during the pandemic that I have decided to splurge a bit and see how paying for event LE packs goes haha. Supernatural Season 15 & Sufjan Stevens' “The Ascension”

Teaser: there’s a song on this album called "Die Happy” where the lyrics are just “I want to die happy” for 5 minutes and 45 seconds. yeah. yeah.

Disclaimer: yes it’s all a stretch and I’m overthinking it but also… am I? (yes) 

long post time! know that reading ahead may hurt you and yes it does get worse the further down the track list you get 💕 have fun kids

So just to start off, I think it’s funny that something Sufjan’s discography & Supernatural have in common is the 15+ years of the internet arguing if it’s gay or not, and the answer ending up being yes. PLUS there’s the obvious connection of American mythos + mythology + calvinist themes (I am hissing) + religious trauma prevalent in both. 

If you’re a fan of both like I am, it’s easy to connect them— notable connections being songs like “John My Beloved” and “The Owl and the Tanager” or even “John Wayne Gacy Jr.”, but I’m going to focus on Sufjan's 2020 album, “The Ascension” since even the arc itself seems so connected to season 15 of Supernatural, specifically. 

At least in my head it does <3 enjoy 

MAKE ME AN OFFER I CANNOT REFUSE

When interviewed about the meaning of this track, Sufjan explains that this song is about asking God, “what do you have to say for humanity?” That it’s about desperation, creation, and devastation. It’s about frustration with divinity. Also the vibes are 10/10. Need I say more 

RUN AWAY WITH ME

This song is beautiful, it makes me want to sit in some grass and stare at the sky. 

Some lines that make me Dean/Cas crazy are the two lines in verse 1 and verse 2 that mirror each other by being in the same place melodically:

Verse 1: they will terrorize us / with new confusion / with the fear of life that seeks to bring despair within

Verse 2: I will bring you life / a new communion / with a paradise that brings the truth to light within

Yeahhh so the words “Despair” and “The Truth” were mirrored in this song yes it was coincidental yes I’m clinging to it. It fascinates me 

But this song is about begging someone to stay with you.

VIDEO GAME

My first thought when I heard this song was about how it was such a song for enneagram 4s. If you don’t know what that means, I think Dean is a 4 and wrote a post about it here. 

AND @trapperjohnmcintyre also made the connection between these lyrics and Dean in this post, and honestly I don’t need to say much more than that??

The song is about feeling paranoid and angry that God is controlling your every move and you can’t escape it (aka hating the doctrine of predestination). Of course it’s also about not wanting to follow societal scripts. 

You just want to have an easier life instead of the weight of good and evil resting on your back!!!

I don’t want to put the devil on a pedestal / I don’t want put the saints in chains / I just want to make my life a little easier / I don’t want to play your video game

Also these painful lines, as a treat:

DIE HAPPY

Yep, "Die Happy" immediately follows "Tell Me You Love Me." Yes, the lyrics are just “I want to die happy” over and over for almost 6 minutes. 

First of all, the repetition mirrors the end of the song Fourth of July, from Sufjan’s previous album Carrie & Lowell, where Sufjan sings “we’re all gonna die” over and over.

Parallels, baby.

But I noticed something else about this recently though— in Die Happy, if you are listening to it in your headphones, there’s this weird sound that sounds like a wasp flying around your head (it made me uncomfortable which is why I noticed it, haha). After I felt unnerved for a moment, I had a realization— that this could be referencing one of Sufjan’s most beloved songs, “The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out To Get Us!!” (yes that’s a real song title lol)

The Predatory Wasp is about how Sufjan fell in love with his best friend at the Bible Camp he went to as a teenager. The wasp is a metaphor for internalized homophobia and also his love and how he fears his love will hurt the boy he’s in love with. 

So, Die Happy references an iconic song from Illinois (2005) with these notable lines:

GILGAMESH

Oh boy. 

I mean you kinda know what’s coming because of the title. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the world’s oldest piece of epic world literature, and Gilgamesh was “the first hero of human history.” 

In the world’s oldest story, The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh and Enkidu are “very close friends” (their relationship is very homoerotic and this is barely disputed). Gilgamesh calls Enkidu his brother, and they are mutually selfless towards each other but when Enkidu dies, indirectly because of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh has a breakdown and mourns him like that of a spouse and then has to come to terms with his own mortality. 

The meta level of this is so obvious I’m not even going to go into it. Anyways… here are lyrics that make me want to scream! 

the repetition of “my heart”... the concept of singing a eulogy.... saying your heart is chained to Your Angel............ it hurts

DEATH STAR

Star Wars reference my beloved. Like many of these songs this has Fuck You God energy.

This song is a bop honestly 

When the lyrics were released a bunch of Sufjan fans contrasted Goodbye To All That’s here I am alone in my car / hopelessly infatuted / and I’m driving to wherever you are to Sufjan & Moses Sumney’s song, “Make Out in My Car”.

Yeah, I know, we’re all thinking of this:

Make Out in My Car is basically where Moses gave Sufjan a horny car guy chorus and told him to write the verses, and Sufjan proceeded to write the most liturgical shit ever (and we love him for it). ANYWAYS… Goodbye To All That also reminds me of Dean’s depression and the weirdness that started in 15x19 and goes into 15x20. For some reason he makes it seem more upbeat and happy than it is...

Despite this song being a bop, the lyrics are depressing. He’s alone in his car. He’s hopeless. He realizes it’s too late to have died a young man. 

He’s going to try to move on, even though nothing is left of him, he’s begging someone to turn around and show me his shadow.

He also references substance abuse again—

love me / and leave me / intoxicated

  SUGAR

The music video? Iconic. The mom of a family is making a pie, or she’s trying to. She ends up rubbing the filling all over her face, crushing the fruits, the oven catches on fire. 

But she does it! She makes the pie. 

Meanwhile the other family members are in their rooms, overindulging in sugar in all its forms. And then as she and her family eat around a dining table, occassionally being seemingly marrioetted by some unseen force, she looks angrily over her family, they all seem to kind of lose it, then the house starts to come apart until the chandelier falls on the dinner table. 

It’s the making pie + overindulgence in sugar + marionetted family metaphors for me ❤️ 

Ultimately, the song is about begging for affection, being desperate for domesticity, but you feel doomed, you feel like your defeat is predestined, that you can’t escape it.

You just don’t want to be heartbroken & you don’t want to be angry anymore!!!!

  THE ASCENSION

So you may be asking… does this guy get the domesticity he’s longing for?? Does he get his love back?? 

No. He dies. :/

The Ascension begins with just that. He’s dying.

THEN Sufjan decides to rhyme “confess” with “confess”, in two lines that mean almost opposite things:

When I am dead / and the light leaves my breast / nothing to be told / nothing to confess / let the record show / what I couldn’t quite confess

So does this guy have something to confess or not??? 👀

Moving on… 

He goes back to thinking about how his life was predestined all along, and now after all that, he’s dying. So he thinks about all the times he was kind of like this Mythological Icon. That he always had to be the one to show what was right, to lead by example. That that had been his entire identity. 

And he realizes he needs to answer for himself. 

Then he is frightened— realizing he was always asking what everything meant, what it all was for, but that all along he was just angry and depressed.

But even though he feels a like he should have just resigned himself to meaninglessness, that he only thought he could change the world for the better… it strengthened him to know the truth.

And even through the absolute shit of it all, and even though God & others did things from a place of so-called holiness and hopelessness...

He did everything out of love ❤️

So then he dies 🙃

AMERICA

So, as the end of The Ascension asked, what now? 

The album ends on this long track, which Sufjan describes as a protest against all that America has been and has become. 

It’s a protest against capitalism, of destroying humanity for the sake of some cold machinery. 

I have worshipped / I believed / I have broke your bread / for a splendor of machinery

And in true Sufjan fashion, he makes this song about protesting somehow both horny and religious, god bless

I have loved you / like a dream / I have kissed your lips / like a Judas in heat

#GMPD: Jessi (제시)

Feel how you want about it, the fact remains that she has some bonafide hit moments. I never thought I’d explore this so soon in Great Moments in Production & Delivery (GMPD) but it feels like now’s the right time. First, the Disclaimer.

An Album a Day is my exploration into the Korean music scene. This podcast and blog will cover mainstream, indie and some underground artists within the scene and provide both factual and opinionated commentary. The biggest benefit to sharing my thoughts this way is that it will hopefully expose you to more great music and exploration of your own.

Korean American music artist Jessica Ho (Korean: 호현주 [Ho Hyun-joo]) has been in the game since 2005 and her story is one of triumph, setbacks, and hiccups. The New York-born, New Jersey-raised singer, rapper, and songwriter made her debut as a solo artist who then moved into Korean hip-hop trio Lucky J. She made her final appearance with the group in 2014 and then prepared for more solo work. More specifically, her grit and American charisma was personified on the debut season of Unpretty Rapstar (2015) and set her as the second-place winner by audience vote. Since then, the artist I affectionately and teasingly refer to as Capital P (both for the c*nt power and for her shape pre-butt enhancement [I’m top heavy asl too so I know the vibes on being P-shaped lol]) has developed an entertaining catalog.

We’re not talking video content, we aren’t talking aesthetic. We’re not even talking my most favorite track by her of all time (GRAY’s production means I’m already biased sooo yeah). 

This is about the music. In no particular order, here we go.

Who Dat B (2020)

First up is this bop, where the sound engineer put a whole grown foot in the production of the first verse. From 0:14 to a few milliseconds into 0:35, autotune and spatial filters set a mood. She sits on the track, something that is common with Jessi’s delivery, but her trademark ad lib creeps in so resolutely for damn near 3 seconds and it is glorious. The crossover of the reverb and echo effects within 0:32 to 0:35 are a whole chef’s kiss moment.

Cold Blooded teaser (2021)

Laugh if you want to. Laugh if ya want. But the teaser for her most recent 2021 comeback sticks. This isn’t some magical production moment, but it’s a magical choice. Lemme explain. What we hear in the M/V teaser is what was played on set while filming the video. This is the echoey, spatial experience of the music blasting over loud speakers to help everyone stay on count as the women of Street Woman Fighter/스트릿 우먼 파이터 (SWF) do what needs to be done with this choreography. All the same, it creates that fun filter moment that makes you feel like you're standing outside the club or a party you’re hoping to get in to. Think about it! The bass is knocking, the audio’s a bit muffled, and then Jessi’s husky “Huh” comes through with just enough clarity to make you wish you were inside. That’s a great choice, baby.

Gucci (2017)

The husky voice was the meat and potatoes on this track. There’s nothing super-demanding from the music -- it’s fun and structured to let her thrive -- but Jessi sells the hell out of this track. She was in her bag and her voice was deep as hell. You see a platinum blonde woman atop some luggage in a pink cute outfit, and then she comes and drops the octaves on you immediately like a stack of weights. The music drops out for her natural baseline to milk the punch for all its worth. And she’s doin’ the thing, talkin’ mad shit right out the gate within the first few words. Regardless of comprehension, you’re bobbing along to the beat without realizing that you’re bopping to her cadence and tone. The instrumental to this song is simple as hell. You check it and you find yourself enjoying it because of the mere thought of her delivery. That’s a damn win.

염따(YUMDDA) - 9ucci REMIX (2021)

Jessi shines regularly as the sole female on a ratchet track. Fast forwarding to 1:37 (to avoid distractions) and Jessi’s perched on a custom wrapped whip and she’s going in. Her tone is right, she’s playful and flagrant, and took the O-ren Ishii approach in making sure listeners know she’s not playing because hers is the only all-English verse on this Hangul track.

The 2018 summer love track “Down” is a positive showcase of her singing chops. She won’t be blowing socks off with her vocals but you hear control and a truly unique voice amongst a scene that has a lot of similarities for perceived-success’s sake. And there’s this honorable mention for the musicality being so far left for her (and this damn commercial at 1:06 that I spent that whole summer going, “Sheesh! SHEESH!” at because she was just rising in SoKo and her tone and confident strut was everything to me! This is when I started calling her Capital P lolol) but I believe those interested in checking out more of her work have a good jump-off from this. Bye y’all.

P1Harmony DISHARMONY: FIND OUT album review

Been a P1ece since debut pretty much, love the piwons so much and I just feel the need to scream about their god-tier discography. So here’s an unsolicited album review.

For context, I legit love every single song they’ve put out and totally loved this too on first listen before I started to write this. Their sonic landscape is actually so diverse if you follow the progression from Break Out, Stand Out through to Find Out, so no surprise about the variety of sounds and vibes here.

I checked the song credits and it seems that for all tracks lyrically there’s members involved (mostly Intak and Jongseob from the quick scan) but all members were listed for Follow Me.

- Do It Like This - title

(The MV is crazy and I love it just as a side note, if I start on that too this would be ten volumes and then some.)

I thought I wouldn’t be too surprised when I heard it first cuz I felt like maybe FNC had spoiled too much of it (teasers and dance challenges etc) but I was shocked to hear the full song. Somewhat reminiscent of Scared in some ways?

I love the way that Intak and Jiung own this song - like they’re shining so much here, idk if it was because of the MV too. Actually rap line totally stands out on this song - Intak and Jongseob have some pretty key verses and smash them. It’s catchy, it’s fun, it’s a hype energetic type of song, no surprise since their titles are always pretty intense.

I was intrigued by the bridge - it’s like 2 part - gang vocals part with Keeho’s ‘dream team’ part then Theo’s short vocal part - it felt quite new for some reason, like it didn’t strike as something I’ve heard before from them idk I might just be wrong but it was interesting for sure.

- That’$ Money (of course it’s styled like this haha gen Z icons)

The instrumental is so pretty, totally screams P1Harmony to me for some reason, this type of song. It’s hype but a little deep and a little sad, similar vibe to Butterfly and Pyramid if you know what I mean. There’s a line something like ‘i got you on me/that’s money’ as in they’re criticising money over people, which definitely sounds like a social commentary that Piwon would make lol. I’ll need to look at the lyrics to figure it out further but my albums aren’t coming for a while and I doubt the lyrics will be available online for a while yet.

- Follow Me

I was finishing the previous paragraph when it started playing and I legit stopped cuz the intro kicked my ass. The bass line, the growls I can’t. There’s like a ‘brumm’ sound going down in pitch and I’m obsessed. Then the build up, hello? Insane, then the electronic(?) parts in the chorus (or is it like a synth type of thing) it’s so cool. Then back with the base line instrumental I’m in love. There’s a pre-chorus with some dope harmonies, I feel like that’s become part of their signature sound tbh, and also the doubled/gang vocals in the chorus too.

Bridge King Jiung?? Your hand in marriage pls.

The whole idea of ‘follow me’ feels very monumental since Piwon are gaining some traction imo, and I’m just so excited for them to be recognised more. There’s been a lot of great groups to debut around the same time but I just feel like Piwon are a different beast altogether so I feel very proud of them when they kind of see that - like they’re happy to do their own thing, so yeah follow them indeed. (also I think it fits their concept like the movie and cinematic verse too.)

- Bop

The noise music hoe in me awoke when I heard the first note lol. Also Jongseob starting the song again?! He started Follow Me and wow I’m proud of my kid, he slayed that. Also that guitar before the harmonies kicked in - take my soul already. Did I hear Soul’s voice leading some of the ‘oh wey’ parts? My kid’s been practically silent so far - shit I take that back I just heard him have a line but it was sandwiched between the rappers so it’s not noticeable. The bridge was dope, some Keeho honey vocals then the beatboxing type of thing in the instrumental? Holy shitttt.

- Before the Dawn

I was anticipating this one a lot since from the track vid is sounded like a ballad (also my kid Jongseob is a main dancer, I will take no criticisms). It feels like what Piwon would do to make a ballad and I love it. The vocalists slaying; I love hearing Theo and Keeho with the bare piano instrumental. But damn Jongseob is leading the song a lot, it’s more like rap ballad? (actually Intak starts it off so him too, he’s leading a lot this album too). It feels like a deep song so I can’t wait to see the lyrics for context but you can definitely feel it.

It’s such a beautiful song, I’m not surprised that Piwon has the flexibility to pull this off, there’s always a very melodic song on each album besides the noise music bops and it just shows off the members’ musical skillsets so yeah, love it. It’s going on the approved ballads list.

It’s quite sad (3 or 4th listen through), but there’s something hopeful about it, I think I felt that when I heard the string section that picks up in the second or third verse.  

- Peacemaker

Another ballad type?? I’m here for it. The piano is gorgeous, also the harmonies too. Ace Jiung showing off his voice, get it king! It’s such a feel good song, and I heard Soul’s pretty vocals too so bonus points (there’s a bit that’s definitely Soul but there’s another bit next to it that I wasn’t sure was him or Jiung? I think it was Soul after all idk). I love it when the rappers sing too. Keeho ad libs in the last chorus omg. Another social commentary type of song I think, it definitely strikes me as something that is unexpected (like a slower song, less electronicy) but it totally feels like Piwon is solidifying their sound.

The type of song you hear at the end of a film when the good guys win and it’s a happy ending after all they’ve been through, I can just see this being in a second film if they do one (I’ve heard whispers of potential sequel in some corners of the web but it’s hearsay until proven otherwise).

Conclusion

Piwon are insane. Insanely talented, insanely skilled for a group that is only freshly out of rookie status, and insanely musical in that each individual member shows just how much potential they have to be big in this industry. Their previous two albums were incredible too (Siren is a queen amongst recent debuts songs, fight me jk I’m non-confrontational don’t), but this is definitely the right next music evolution step for the group. I hope everyone enjoys the album as much as this p1ece of piwon trash does, stan P1Harmony, you won’t regret it.
