It’s not that bad, all things considered. You must have the intuition of a god for choosing a restaurant that allows free refills, because if you’ve had to pay for drinks this whole night, you’d have gone completely broke. Still, you can’t help feeling pretty shitty. There’s no way your date is running two hours late.

The place is a casual diner, serving a host of soups, sandwiches, and pastries that had you salivating earlier on in the night, but right now, you’re not exactly in the mood to browse the menu again. The diner doesn’t close until twelve, but it’s been almost deserted for the past hour, probably because it’s a weeknight and the average person has plenty better to do than wait on a person who’s made it obvious they’re not coming

Just as you’re about to get up and leave – for real this time – the waiter comes around to refill your drink. It’s a quarter till twelve, and at this point you know he probably wants to start cleaning up, but still he tops up your drink without saying anything. It’s a kindness, but a part of you just wishes he would kick you out already.

He’s been the only waiter on staff since you got here – even the manager knew this place would be empty – and you’re so glad he was, because if you ever want to show your face here again, all you have to do is avoid one person. It’s a shame that you feel too embarrassed to interact with him, though. He’s been nothing but polite, only asking if you were ready to order at the very beginning before quickly picking up on the fact that you were waiting on your date– the one that wasn’t coming.

You take a sip from your full drink, but you can’t stomach any more. Standing up, you try to avoid eye contact with the waiter, who’s relaxing behind the counter, as you step towards the exit. There’s a nagging feeling in the back of your head, like you’ve skipped a step or forgotten an important task. It dawns on you as you’re facing the exit: you forgot to tip him!

Well, you didn’t order a meal and you paid for your drink up front, so you’re not exactly sure if you were meant to tip him. Hell, you didn’t know if this restaurant accepted tips at all. But this waiter just watched you sit through quiet torture and the second-hand embarrassment was probably like stepping on glass.

“Hey,” you turn around. “Do I… Should I tip you?”

“Yeah, I was wondering that, too,” he says lightly. He purses his lips and stares to the side, “I’ve turned it over a few times in my head, and decided that nope! You don’t need to tip me. You have no lawful or moral obligation, I resolve you.”

You feel your eyes getting watery, so you focus on the dust in the crease between the wall and the floor. Him saying that only makes you feel worse, but it’d be too awkward to hand him the money now. It feels like there should be something you could do, some way you could thank him for keeping you company.

“How many people are staffed right now?” you ask.

He looks caught off guard, like he expected the interaction to end there. “Oh, just me and one other guy in the kitchen.”

“Let me help you close.”

His eyes widen, and you try to meet his gaze. He’s puzzled, probably trying to figure out what you get out of helping him. Eventually, he shrugs his shoulders and gets up from behind the counter.

“Yeah, why not,” he says with a fond smirk, gesturing to you to follow him. 

He leads you to the supply closet, where the two of you grab cleaning spray, rags, and a broom. While you work on wiping down the tables and chairs, he counts the cash in the register.

“So, you always offer to clean up after yourself?” he starts, too focused on tallying up the earnings to notice you staring at him. The waiter, “Dick” according to his name tag, is very cute. You were trying to ignore him the best you could for the sake of your would-be date, but honestly, fuck that guy. Your waiter with the dashing smile and ruffled hair blows him out of the water, anyway.

“Just feeling extra polite tonight. You always accept help from customers?”

“You won’t believe this, but nobody’s offered,” he says with a snort. “Still, probably not the smartest idea on my part.”

You think about his words for a second as you wipe down a particularly stubborn stain. “I wouldn’t be able to rob you if I wanted to.”

It’s true, he looked well-muscled, even if on the leaner side. His eyes are playful as he narrows them at you. “Careful, they take security footage of this place, don't confess to any thoughts you may or may not have.”

You laugh, going back to cleaning before you start again. “Can’t believe you put off closing the diner just so you could watch me get stood up for an extra however many minutes.”

“Counterpoint: Can’t believe you let yourself get stood up for so long.” Dick finishes up at the register and grabs the broom. “You’re worth more than that.”

“Oh? And how do you know what I’m worth?” you say instinctively. 

You watch his eyes widen from your peripheral vision, like he didn’t mean to say his last comment out loud. “I wasn’t trying to overstep, but, like, obviously you’re attractive. You could get anyone you wanted and–”

“You’ve been watching me all night, haven't you?” Filled with newfound confidence, you leave your rag and spray bottle and walk over to where Dick is sweeping the entrance. 

Despite how friendly he’s been tonight, he deliberately avoids eye contact as he works. “Well, yeah, I needed to make sure you got your order once – if – you placed one–”

“No, no. I mean you were watching me,” you place a hand on his shoulder. “What, you wish you were the one I was going on a date with?”

And though you know you’re jumping to conclusions, he stiffens at your words and it’s clear you’ve caught him.

“I… I didn’t want to bother–” Dick starts, dropping the broom. You use the opening to push him against the wall, hearing the scratches of the brick against his button up shirt.

“That’s alright,” you whisper. “I don’t mind being bothered.”

You can feel his chest rise and fall as you press yourself closer to him. His eyes follow your every move, and you bring your face closer until it's only inches away from his. 

You can feel the puffs of his inhales and exhales on your skin, and you’re about to completely close the gap between you two, but Dick beats you to it. He kisses you, and you pull back for a moment in surprise before sinking into the kiss.

His lips are so warm, and as he brings up a hand to pull you closer by the jaw, you notice how surprisingly soft his hands are. You try to deepen the kiss, nipping his lip in the process, and he lets out a gasp. Biting at his lip a little more, he giggles as he realizes you’re playing with him.

“You’re starting to bother me,” he quips, trying to keep his composure as you nip at the underside of his jaw. Just when he starts getting comfortable and relaxing into your kisses, you switch to biting at him, and he jolts.

“Maybe you deserve it. You need to learn better manners, sitting there, watching me all night. Bet you wish I would’ve shoved you against this wall a whole lot sooner, huh?” you whisper into his ear before going back to kissing down his neck. He moans at your words, but tries to muffle himself by pushing his face into his shoulder. You bring a hand up to his hair and tug to get him to pay attention to you.

“Right in front of everyone, too,” you continue, sliding a hand down his stomach to work on his jeans. “Just mark you, make you moan like a bitch while everyone else is watching.”

Biting his lip, Dick tries to ignore the effect your words have on him, but he’s still rutting against your hand as you’re unzipping him. He gives a small thrust against the air, whimpering as you wrap your hand around his cock.

“Shit, this all for me?” you breathe. You swear Dick can hear you smirk, even as he pinches his eyes shut.

“Don’t– Ah!” he gets cut off as you start stroking him slowly. “Don’t let– let it go to your head.”

“No, I think I’ll be just fine,” you quicken your pace, not giving him a second to get ready. “If I remember right, some slut thinks he’s hot enough to get me to fuck him just by, what, batting his eyes at me? From all the way across the diner?”

You may be looking for someone who's strong and assertive, and maybe loves to put on a good show for people (as we have Mars in Leo here).

You could be into punk, or darker music genres. Your next love will be fiery, but won't show all their cards. Except it doesn't seem like you're in the mood for the dating scene at all. Not in the fun and casual sense anyway. You want someone serious and committed, right off the bat. Someone who's fiscally responsible and likely as driven as you. You want someone who comes right in, sits down, and presents themselves as a good partner as though they're interviewing for a job hoping the star will stand out of the pack. Mainly, you want to know exactly what you're in for before sticky things like emotions even enter the picture.

This pile seems similar to my pile 2. When you see the moon hiding the sun, you find it to be mesmerizing. The moon shines its beauty for us so we can enjoy the stars, perhaps to stargaze, maybe to feel like ourselves, who knows. But then again it’s just a normal cycle, a factual tradition, I suppose. But then we look at society and how it teaches us that our flaws are significant and that we must be perfect like Barbie and Ken. But then again, one cannot achieve such perfection, it’s simply impossible. Right?

Why do you believe that you must be perfect at everything? You must achieve everything and that if you do not, you’re unworthy? Not good enough and such. What are you gaining from that? Would you preferably say that to a child, let alone your child? No.

Would you find an infant, barely born and tell them, “you’re doing this wrong. What is wrong with you?! You cannot do anything right!” No. So why do you do it to yourself?

If I were to yell at you right now, how would you react? Would you reciprocate it? Would you let it bury inside and create resentment towards me? Maybe you might slap me as well. Or I suppose, you will laugh it off like it’s nothing, or maybe it truly isn’t anything because you became numb to it because you justified it.

Even so, it’s not justified to act so harsh on yourself, high expectations won’t lead you anywhere, well, I suppose it would leave you in a dump. That doesn’t sound enjoyable, does it? No.

Maybe next time, let’s try being easier on ourselves and show gratitude to oneself for achieving a small accomplishment and giving ourselves a reward. Shouldn’t be hard if you actually care for yourself, now would it? You tell me. Decide it for yourself.

When I think of your pile, I see a child, presumably someone who looks pale, but isn’t. I see an image of someone wearing nothing, but not in a perverted fashion. I see them staring into my eyes with such sadness, such hatred in their heart and eyes. So much anger, and yet there is a “help me” feeling of the way they are gazing into my eyes.

What I’m saying is, those reading this pile feels .. a sense of emptiness and apathy. I already mentioned these to @commander-sunshine but here are some of my head canons about A-17's favorite batch, because I am still thinking about them

I will start with the oldest of the batch:

Wolffe: Wolffe has that protective shabuir aura older siblings have. He is logical, has a hardshell and is sassy af. He wants to do the right thing at all times and perhaps is afraid of failures (especially after he lost his pack). As a cadet he was that one kid, who acted older and tougher than they were. He would try to be the brother to look up to. Tho wolffe is born sassy. It’s very easy to get under his skin and his vod'ike all respect and love to tease him with the simplest things. He can be an asshole if he wants to, which is almost every time when his vod'ike decide to be shitheads. His sense of humor is probably a little weird but at the same time very hilarious

Next is Fox: Fox is Wolffe’s twin. He is only a few milliseconds younger than him, which is why Fox hates it so much when Wolffe plays the 'I-am-the-older-twin'-card. Much like Wolffe, Fox is very protective of his brothers and shows it in weird ways since both aren’t good expressing their feelings. They both would rather bottle their feelings up than to burden anyone. Tho while Wolffe is more straightforward and rational, Fox is more sneaky and intuitive. That’s why the two argue almost 24/7. They are just too similar and yet so different. Also never anger Fox. As a cadet he bit a lot of brothers and kicked their shebs during sparring. In my head canon he was one of the best, if not the best, which is why he became the commander of the coruscant guard, directly serving the chancellor. His humor tho was probably dark since his early ages thanks to his perception and intuition

Ponds is the true middle child: He is always overlooked, despite him trying his best at all times. He is one of the kindest souls and always honest and true to himself. Thanks to him being overlooked tho, he can get away with a loooot of shit. He probably played so many pranks but no one ever suspected him. He is that sibling to take responsibility and lead when no one else will. Most of the vod'ike would probably go to him to confess anything, since wolffe and fox tend to be more… unhinged with their problem solving. Ponds humor probably contains a lot of word plays and puns. He doesn’t try to be funny tho

Now Bly: Bly is similar to Ponds but leans towards the younger brother category. He too is sometimes overlooked/ overshadowed by his siblings but not as bad as Ponds. If Bly plays pranks everyone will know that it was him. I think as a cadet Bly was very sensible and naive. He would make a lot of bets and end up losing so much, that Fox and his intuition would need to come to the rescue and het him back to the winning end. Bly is very caring and empathetic. His humor is kinda dorky and he sometimes ends up saying the wrong things despite his good intentions

And the youngest of the batch is Cody: Yes Cody is very responsible, tough and proud… but underneath all that… Cody is… he just has that little-shit energy. He plays and acts big, he is very talented and skilled in anything he does, but oh god that man was such a feral trouble maker as a cadet. Cody is so kriffing competitive he would challenge anyone walking past him. Most of the time he would challenge Fox. I think Cody and Fox had a special bond. They are both very competitive and see things in a similar ways. They just have mutual understandings of any situation. (This is also the reason why I think that Cody would have often visited Fox after order 66. They were both working for the empire and Cody slowly came to realize what Fox must have gone trough. I think Fox's death was an additional reason to go awol and find obi-wan)

Anyway Cody was an extreme brat, yet very caring and gentle when he saw someone in need of compassion. He always wanted to be an older brother and teach and help others.

With Rex he got that: Rex is the babiest baby of the batch. He is literally the batches favorite and no one tries to even hide it. Rex got all the cuddle and all the love his batch had to offer. Anyone who treated Rex like a defect because of his blonde hair… well lets say they all ended up in a medbay. Tho Rex was a little shit too. Not like Cody, but still a little shit. Rex would sometimes do the craziest things, but did he ever got punished for them? No. Did Cody get blamed for his chaos? Yes absolutely.

Rex and Cody were always close. They would prank their ori'vode nearly everyday and never did anyone blame kyute little Rex. Rex is also the only one who can stop any of their batchmates temper tantrums. Yet he likes to watch the chaos that are his brothers.

The Devil and the Hanged Man are an interesting pair. Why are they constantly fighting you? do they actually have anything worthwhile to tell you or are they just bringing you down?

Now for some of you... you're just being damn cruel to yourself. You're being too excessively hard on yourself or others. If you need ot repeat yourself more than three times, fuck the person and that situation. People are so desperate to hang onto relationships that y'all forget that you need to cater to yourself first. You can't get nothing good if you are surrounded by people who are only trying to fight you.

For others of you, I'm seeing that you're taking a new appraoch to how you do something. You're like, you right Commander, this isn't the fight worth having, but how do I train myself? recognize your triggers. recognize what you need to work on and work on it.

and YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING DAMN HARD. the Devil is something we're so deeply invested in, it almost becomes too toxic for us. it is the chains we carry, the wounds we carry but damn we'll die for them.

and the Hanged Man is saying, hey you don't constantly need to hang on to that. that 03 of pentacles is here for you. let people help you. you cherish the dream that you have, and those triggers I just mentioned might be the reason why you cannot see the help that wants to come in.

so slow down. I get it, you carry that 09 of wands like a blanket. you're tired, exhausted and not rested at all. you've been fighitng a long battle. but Saturn gives to those who learn. you will be rewarded greatly. this time around, those who come in to help you are those you need help from. you are meant to lead pile 2.

your battles are ending, and you are going to be victorious. Just make sure, if those battles are internal, that you give yourself a break. okay?

Something came swinging at you like a bat. suddenly, without warning, and you aren't too happy about it. but I tell you what, once you decide or decided to let that shit go and flow with it, you step into your power.

Pile 3, I don't know if you had a hard time picking between these piles cause I see a mix of both one and two in here but lemme lay it to you this way ::

You are the creator of your own world. You've been struggling, juggling and carrying the "what if this happens" and the "this or that" options. and the thing is, you're now walking away from it all.

For some of you, I'm literally seeing an "ah-ha" moment. like you realized that you deserve more than what you're getting. that you don't need to lower yourself. that your boundaries, your priorities don't have an expiration date and you don't need to choose between this, that, or the other thing.

for others, this came as a rude awakening. losing something you thought you had, a person you thought you could trust... something got slapped ontop of you and you're like "girl what is thsi shit?"

but everything is a blessing in disugise in hindsight. through this, you're now allowed to explore. and that 07 of swords goes from deception, to a surprise that is actually kind of good. there's no longer a need to tip toe through everything. there's no longer a reason to lie. You're excited again! willing to dive into things! passionate!

and that's how it should be.

stay curious. go down every path. stick to what you know and go forth into this new journey. or... it's more like you're returning to this journey. welcome back. I'm glad you're finding your spark again.

imagine your blind date falling through and its super late at night but then best friend joshua comes to pick u up and you get mcdonald's or smth at like 11 pm. and hes is kinda sick of all ur dates falling through when he's fr whipped for you (kiss in the car 👀)

this turned out a bit longer than I thought LOL

but ugh!!! imagine the hurt you feel in your heart when you finally realise after a good half hour that your blind date had basically abandoned ship, and you're alone all dressed up in a nice outfit while spamming your friend best friend joshua on the phone.

he hears the way your voice is breaking from the tears streaming down your face as you stutter out the location of where you are so he could pick you up. and gosh, he knows he'll do anything for you in a heartbeat as he drops everything that he's doing before grabbing his keys and racing to his car, driving down the streets to come pick you up.

when he catches sight of you sitting down on the curve, he hops out of his car to come racing to your side, instinctively bringing you into his arms so you could melt into his comfort. and it's such a natural feeling between you two--comforting one another, such as the hugs that you exchange that you've always believed to be merely platonic and at the dangerous line of something beyond that.

"hey, I'm here," joshua whispers comfortingly, and you feel him rubbing circles at your arms. "come on, I'll take you to get some food. my treat, okay?"

you don't say anything, only giving him a nod as he leads you towards his car. opening the passenger door for you, you hop inside as he settles into the drivers seat. you don't exactly know where he was planning to take you, but you shouldn't be surprised when you arrive at a mcdonalds five minutes later.

joshua, being someone who has stuck to your side like glue for years, has always known your preferences for food, somehow even knowing your regular order for mcdonalds. and when you realise he isn't buying anything for himself, you muster the courage to ask.

"wait, what about you?" you ask him even though it was too late before he pulls up to the next window.

joshua only gives you a gentle smile, and for some reason you feel something leap in your stomach. "I told you, it's my treat for you. have to make you feel better somehow, right?"

before you could protest, he's already grabbing the food from the window and pulling up into a nearby parking space so that you could eat.

"I should've expected it," you mumble while unwrapping your food. "I got all dressed up for nothing. what's funny is that I... I knew that they wouldn't show up. I-I should've trusted my intuition more."

joshua just peers towards you, letting his eyes take in the effort you've put into your outfit.

"I think you look pretty." he says, but it's so quiet you barely catch it, and you feel the blush forming in your face.

"you always tell me I'm pretty."

he quirks a brow teasingly. "but am I wrong, though?"

that alone was enough to make you go speechless while chewing a french fry. what follows is silence, a mixture of comfort, a tinge of awkwardness, but also something unspoken between the two of you. sometimes you wonder how joshua manages to continue sticking with you throughout your constant failed dates.

"you must be sick of me," you chuckle awkwardly. "and frustrated for having to pick me up all the time from these stupid dates."

"I would never be sick of you, Y/N," then he pauses. "I care about you... a lot more than you think."

"but... but, you know that you don't have to stick around like this, you know? you could've stayed home and I wouldn't have blamed you for if you were tired of, like, doing this all for me-"

you find your words cutting off when joshua lands a sudden kiss at your lips, and your eyes widen out of your head when he pulls away with a satisfied grin.

"well, I chose not to," is all he says. "now hush and eat your food before I kiss you again."

A Lackadaisy Victory!! (A LackaVictory!) :)

In less than an hour, Lackadaisy exceeded it's 125K goal on Backerkit on the first day. In that same first day, we've already funded 500K, half of that last Million Dollar goal. In five days, we reached 900K. Last night while I was sleeping, we managed to fund the full ONE MILLION!!! And, along with all of these Backerkit goals being reached, the Lackadaisy Pilot on YouTube reached 10 MILLION views!

Think about that! Over one Million Dollars, in just 8 days! Half of a million on the first day. That's extraordinary! Thank you to everyone who has been working on Lackadaisy. Tracy, Newt, Fable. All of the voice actors. Every single sound designer. Every clean up artist. Every storyboard artist. The violinist who played Rocky's violin parts! Every musician. Everybody else who had a contribution to the series in some way, thank you!

The Lackadaisy community is so supportive, welcoming and kind.

The Lackadaisy community is by far one of the best communities and fandoms I've been a part of. Everyone is so kind, nice, and welcoming to everyone. Whether you've been here since the comics, or since the pilot came out (I'm this one!), or anywhere in between, we've all come together for the silly booze cats and a great time. Seeing all the Lackadaisy fanart, LackaOcs, fanfiction, all of it, makes me so happy! It's nice to see such a big and heartwarming community. There's a place for everyone, and everyone is so kind to each other. Seeing every theory and discussion makes me giddy with joy, because who knows what could happen next?

Every person who loves a certain character to a certain degree of insanity normality (Don't worry, I'm guilty of this too!), and finds comfort in them, it's so nice to see people finding comfort in something as great as Lackadaisy. Whether you love the poetic Rocky, the stoic Mordecai, the baby boy baby Freckle, the ecstatic flapper Ivy, the dynamic duo Savoys, or anyone else, I love being able to see how these characters make everyone feel good.

And that's just how great the community is. I haven't talked about Lackadaisy itself!

When I read the Lackadaisy comics, or (re)watch the pilot, it's clear that a lot of love has been put into making Lackadaisy what it is. Each character feels so real, their personalities are so in depth, you feel as if you can find someone with their same personality in the real world. I knew a guy who was almost exactly like Mordecai! And the character's backstories make you/me want to cry and give them a little hug. Everything is so in-depth, and well thought out about.

The time and research Tracy must have done to also make Lackadaisy historically accurate is amazing. I love reading the comic on the website (Lackadaisy.com) and seeing the little notes at the bottom of every part in the little box thing that may explain some 1920s slang, or something that people may not get right away. I've personally learned quite a bit about this time period thanks to Lackadaisy, and I have even done some extra research myself.

And the art. Oh, the art and graphics! Lackadaisy's art style, both in the comics and the pilot, have inspired me a lot in my own art. Studying the style and drawings of silly little booze cats have helped me improve quite a bit.

The story is so intuitive, and in the comics, I love how we can see a bit about each character, whether it be through flash backs or retellings (Like when the Savoys tell Mordecai about them). When you reach a comic chapter that doesn't include a certain character, you wonder "What's going on with them right now?". Lackadaisy's story is easily something that makes you want more.

Usually, when I get into a fandom, I tend to stay for maybe a month or less, then drift off. I don't know why, perhaps I just don't connect with it. But, Lackadaisy is one of the few that I really connect with. The community is one of the reasons I connect with this fandom. I've made so many friends and mutuals through Lackadaisy. It's also nice to see how Tracy and so many people who worked on Lackadaisy look through the Lackadaisy tag and like people's posts, it means a lot to fans like me!

I've had a fixation on the 1900s-1960's for quite some time, maybe since 4th/5th grade. I've seen a few fandoms that wrap around anywhere in that time period, but Lackadaisy is the first to go all in with this period. That's another reason I stay.

And overall, I love the booze cats! I love them all!! Especially Mordecai!! Mordy my beloved!

So, thank you to everyone ever! I can't wait to see something great! I'm really happy to see that Lackadaisy has a bright future!! :) <3

I feel like there's been a drought in your love life I'm sorry 😭 i know it sucks like needing someone to look after you doesn't it help but at the same time yeah you are the baddy tribe after all i don't see you being sad or repenting about it at all ✨ you understand that what's meant to come will come and while it finds it's route self love will keep you sufficient . Some possibilities would be a co worker crushing on you , something about confession on a roof top . you're gonna be okay love let them in , it's alright to break the walls around people you trust.

Some advice :

Something about planting succulents, work on your root chakra , give yourself enough rest , buy jewellery for yourself especially rose gold , something about aventurine stone . I guess it's about working for your needs and not refusing them when it comes to you.

Go out more literally i feel like you're really stuck in your home for some reasons , and yes have a fine balance between your spiritual life and mundane life you're born as a human because you have to do the mundane as well you cannot wait on it , you have to do some things, help your mom and dad and i guess there's this something coming up idk i strongly receive that you or someone around you is going to get married soon like it's gonna be a very fruitful one , but yes maintain individualism , even if you're in a relationship now know that not all your decisions need to be based upon your lover think about what you like and what you don't , don't 🥹 do this to yourself.

Love life :

The song ivy by Frank Ocean has the line " i thought that i was dreaming the day you said you love me" it plays to me it's like a dream to be loved by you , one thing about you is that you're an amazing lover and whoever gets to be loved by you is so blessed because you literally are someone who will stay with them through their highs and lows but one thing about this is , you need to differentiate who deserves what you give and who doesn't so be really really careful, one thing about someone coming to you online or in your locality they adore you and might approach you.

You know you deserved better anyway everything that leaves creates room for something new , it's beautiful that you're putting efforts and don't sabotage the next person you love because your previous experiences were bad you give this a chance but only when you feel healed . Cool Your Jets- Ch. 3: Let’s Dance (Riff x newcomer)

I finish cleaning up my sad attempts to make dinner and then go to freshen up when I hear a knock on the door.

“Riff, if that’s you I’m gonna rip your arms off-!” I hiss as I yank the door open, only to find a dark blue swing dress with a note attached to it.

Anita made this for you! She wants you to show those Jets who’s boss! See you at the dance!

Maria :)

A smile grows on my face as I take the gorgeous blue dress inside. There’s a dotted pattern on the skirt and low-cut bodice, and like my other new dress it’s very flowy. I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to repay Anita for this! I slip it on with a tulle petticoat and twirl in front-a the tiny bathroom mirror. After some makeup and a halfway-decent hairstyling I think I’m ready, and I almost feel too dressed up. Back in the country, simply wear’n a dress with no mud spots on it was fancy enough, but I know city folks got higher standards.

As I head out I remember that I’ve got no clue where this place is, so I decide to go with my intuition and follow a group-a dressed up Puerto Ricans to a school. I wish I could go to school, but since I gotta pay rent there’s no use try’n to squeeze in time.

Inside I can already hear blare’n swing music and the sound-a lots-a people talk’n and laugh’n. I stick to the wall and scope the gym out, noticing that the Sharks and Jets have divided the room.

“Marilyn!”Maria rushes up, dressed in white, and engulfs me in a hug. “You came! And you look wonderful!”

“Of course she does!” Anita walks up, she herself wear’n a black and red dress.

“I must admit, amor- this it definitely the best dress you’ve made.” Bernardo smirks. “Sorry about earlier, chica. I think we got off on the wrong foot.”

I wave it off. “Nah, it’s fine. I’m new here same as you, more water under the bridge. I haven’t been to a dance in months, so let’s dance!”

We group together and walk onto the dance floor, and I notice that Anita and Bernardo take no regard for the line separating the Sharks and Jets. I feel awkward just stand’n here by myself, so I just stay off to the side.

“Hey! Ya made it!”

Mouthpiece runs up with a big smile on his face. “How’re ya supposed to dance when you’re tucked away in the corner? Come dance!” He takes my hand and starts lead’n me to the center-a the room.

“Uh I donno, Mouthpiece. Everybody here’s dancing so intense, and back home we’ve never had social events like this-”

“Just relax! Have fun!” Mouthpiece jerks my arm and sends me falling towards the floor, only to scoop me back up and twirl me around.

“Aw- oh- Oh my God!” I cry as he lifts me up. “What are you doing?!”

“I’m dancing with a pretty goil!” He grins as he twirls me again.

I chuckle sarcastically. “You’re too kind, Mouth!”

“That your new nickname for me?”

“No, it’s just that you can sometimes have a big mouth.”

“Aw!” He dramatically clutches his chest. “I’m scarred beyond repair!”

“Get over it!” I playfully push him and he takes me in for anodda dip.

“I’ll take over from here.”

We both turn and see Riff standing next to us with an amused smirk on his face.

“Jeez, boss. We just got started,” Mouthpiece whines.

“I’m sure Velma wants a fella to dance with,” Riff waves him off. Mouthpiece leaves after giving me a quick look of apology. Now Riff turns to me and offers a hand.

I put my hands on my hips. “Why on Earth would I dance with you after that? Mouthpiece invited me to a nice dance, and now you come here all high-and-mighty try’n to cut in!”

“I just wanna get to know the new goil in town. C’mon, ya won’t regret it!” He winks.

Cautiously, I look around and spot Grazi with anodda Jet.

“Won’t your goil get jealous?”

Riff follows my gaze. “Grazi? Nah, Diesel’s keep’n her company. Right now I’m all yours.”

I give him one more skeptical look, then roll my eyes in defeat. “Fine.”

He takes my waist, a lot more snug than Mouthpiece I might add, and starts waltz’n us all over the room.

“Took a while to find ya! You been look’n for me?”

“When I came I expected to find the leader of a stubborn gang.” I shrug.

He laughs. “Oh really?”

I give a devious smirk. “I’ve been trying to find him, but all I can see is a cleaned-up Jet boy.”

“Ey! Get away from her!” Bernardo comes up and shoves Riff away from me.

“You got a problem, amigo?” The Jets leader pushes Bernardo and they both start circle’n each odda.

“Guys, just stop it!” I try to break them up but it’s no use.

“She’s with us, punk!”

“That’s funny ‘cause last I checked she was meet’n with us!”

“Guys!!” I get in-between them and they seem to remember I’m still there. “I’m here for everyone! Can you guys just go ten minutes without fighting?”

“Hey, hey, hey! Everybody please calm down!” A chaperone comes up to stand in the middle of the Jets and Sharks mob. “There are beautiful goils here that wanna dance, can’t we all just get along?” He goes to talk more about social rules, but then-

“There you are!” Anita comes over and yanks me over towards Maria on the sidelines. “What are you doing? I suggest you stay with Maria and Chino until this mess gets settled.”

Maria huffs. “Anita! We want to dance!”

Anita shakes her head as she heads back to dance with Bernardo. “You can, away from the Jets!”

I sulk in the corner as a massive dance-fight takes place: Sharks vs Jets.

“¡Oye, Javi! Ponle fuego, ¡vamos!” Anita shouts.

Maria and Chino eventually join in, but me being alone leaves me awkwardly pacing back and forth.

“Mambo!”

“Mambo!”

“Go!”

As I watch the dance break out, I can’t help but be a little bit jealous of Riff ‘nd Grazi. She looks like she’s having so much fun, but Riff seems… distracted. He keeps look’n at Bernardo, and Bernardo keeps look’n at Riff. I gotta say- he ain’t a sight for sore eyes. I can understand why Grazi keeps him so close, and can’t help but feel sad that I don’t got no fella to call my own.

I make my way to the back, but then Riff seems to recognize someone next to me. He leads Grazi over, leaving me to stiffly loiter around and stare at the ground.

“Tony! Ya made it! I knew you’d come!” Riff beams with joy. He pulls me forward and gestures to a tall, dark, and handsome guy. “Marilyn, this here’s Tony. One-a the Jets’ founding members and my best friend! Tony-” He gestures to me. “This is Marilyn Jackson. Just moved here from upstate, so we’s make’n her feel welcome.”

Tony shakes my hand. “Pleasure to meet ya! I’d ask ya to dance but I promised my parole offer I wouldn’t get too involved with social events. I only came ‘cause Riff said I would-”

“And ya still came!” Riff smiles.

Tony gives him a glare. “Only for half an hour. I’s here for you, not to cause a rumble!”

Riff shrugs. “Ya can’t back outta this, buddy boy. Soon as the coast is clear we’s meet’n the Sharks to set it up.”

My face twists to a confused expression. “What’s a rumble-?”

“C’mon Riff, let’s dance!” Grazi grasps Riff’s wrist and pulls him back to the crowd, leaving me with Tony.

“Is he always this reckless?’ I ask.

He sighs. “Ever since we was kids. I was the one to hold him back, but since I’s been gone I fear that Riff’s been get’n outta hand.” He looks around the gym, then says: “I think I’m just gonna drift around ‘nd make sure the Jets play fair, if ya get my drift? You go on ahead- enjoy yourself!”

I go back to watching everyone jive and dance, and wondering what other odd characters I’m gonna meet in this city. I’m already caught between 2 gangs- what else is in store for Miss Jackson?

“You wanna dance, buddy boy?” I hear Riff jab- most likely at Bernardo.

Uh-oh.

I try to get closer to the clump-a angry dancers, but the chaperones and policemen are block’n my path. Once I do make it through, an argument’s already panning out.

“But I wanna dance! Riff, you said we could dance!” Grazi wines.

“I know, I know doll. Lemme just-”

“No! I’m sick-a this!” She shoves him and storms past, but then turns back. “We’re through!” She glares at me. “He’s your problem now!”

I just stare wide-eyed as people around me begin to argue, until Anita comes over and guides me into the hallway.

“Come, chica. This is no place for a young lady.”

I shake my head. “Is it always like this? Stupid gangs ruining social events?”

Anita nods. “I’m afraid so. All we can do is try to calm them down when it’s over.”

She goes off to the bathroom to fix her makeup, while I go sit next to Maria in the hallway. But she seems… distant.

“Maria? Are you ok?”

She nods, but then seems to rethink and shakes her head.

“Maria, what’s wrong?”

“I- I danced with a Jet boy,” she whispers. “And… I think I like him.”

I frown. “Who?”

“I think his name is Tony?”

“Oh, Riff’s friend! I kinda know him, he seems nice. What’s wrong with that?”

“Because Bernardo hates him! He hates all the Jets.”

I notice Tony walk up with Riff and the odda Jets as they go off with the Sharks.

Anita huffs. “Come, Maria. We’ve had enough drama for one night, so let’s head home. You coming, Marilyn?”

I look back and forth between the Jets that are still present and Anita. “Sorry Anita, but I’m gonna stay a bit longer and keep the guys in-check. You go on and get home safely.”

She nods and starts guiding Maria away, leaving me standing next to Tony.

“Buenas noches, Marilyn!”

“G’night, Maria!” I call back.

“Maria? Maria…” I see Tony get a dazed look in his eyes.

I wave a hand in front of him. “Uh, Tony? Earth-to-Tony? Ya with us?”

He blinks. “Marilyn? Have you ever heard-a luv at foist sight?”

“Uhh,” My eyes widen and my jaw drops. “Kinda?”

Tony gives a dopey smile. “Then I think I’m in luv! Marilyn, I just kissed the most beautiful goil I’ve ever met, and her name’s Maria!”

I gasp. “Maria? You mean my neighbor, Maria?”

“She’s your neighbor? Wow, you’re lucky!”

“She was just talk’n ‘bout you!” I hiss, look’n around to make sure nobody’s listen’n.

Tony gawks at me. “She was? What’d she say?!”

“I ain’t gonna be spill’n gossip- it’s just plain evil!” I cross my arms.

“Aw, c’mon Marilyn! Please! Does she luv me back? Did she like dance’n with me?” His smile fades. “Or- or does she hate me, and never wanna see me again…?”

I hold my hand up to steady the poor guy. “Alright, alright, fine! She luvs ya! Just don’t go have’n a meltdown on me! I got enough emotional baggage as it is!”

Tony’s face looks as if he’s been born again. “In that case, I’m gonna go find her!”

He starts off towards the exit, leaving me nearly speechless.

“Tony- Tony! Ya can’t just track her down! That’s creepy-!”

But it’s too late. Tony’s already head-over-heels and is out the door.

“Marilyn!”

Riff, now look’n more smug than ever, strides up. “Where’s Tony? He's gonna miss the meeting.”

I point to the door. “Just missed ‘im.”

Riff shrugs. “Guess I’ll have to fill him in later. Right now I gotta go meet with Bernardo.”

“Ay ay! Leave her alone!” Anita comes up and waves him off. She leads me away, but not before I look back one more time and see Riff air-kiss me goodbye.

As he turns to leave, Anita scrunches her face. “I suggest you stay away from that Jet boy- Riff. He’s no good for you. I’m going to tell Maria the same thing about her Jet boy- they’re all the same.”

“Tony’s not. He’s not like them, and he wants noth’n to do with the Jets. He’s only here because he’s their friend.”

“Once a Jet, always a Jet,” Antia argues as Bernardo strolls up to us. “Hola, mi amor! I left Maria with Chino.” She points at me. “And came back for you because Bernardo said he just scheduled a rumble for tomorrow night, and I do not want you around those Jets!” She walks off again, and that word keeps ringing in my head.

“A- A what?” I frown. “I’ve heard that word before… Riff mentioned it…”

Bernardo nods. “It’s a rumble, señorita. An all-out fight between gangs when only one comes out on top. We just planned out with the Jets for tomorrow night, so I suggest you stay in unless you want trouble.”

Bernardo storms outta the room with Anita, leaving me alone to think over this idea until Mouthpiece finds me again.

“Hey! I lost ya! Where’ve ya been?”

“Do you know about the rumble?” I ask darkly.

Mouthpiece opens his mouth, then shuts it again. “Who told you?”

“Bernardo.”

He scoffs. “Figures some PR would tell ya.”

“Is it really that bad?” My voice is uneven.

He avoids my gaze and nods. “Yeah, it can get pretty bad. That’s the reason Tony got locked up ‘cause he nearly beat a kid to death last year.”

My hand flies to my mouth. “Death? Mouthpiece… I don’t want anyone to die, is there any way to settle this without fighting?”

He smiles a little. “Ya worried ‘bout me, doll?”

“I’m serious! None-a you deserve to die! I could talk to Bernardo, he might call it off…”

“Fat chance.”

I roll my eyes. “What ‘bout Riff? If I could talk to him-”

“Ask and ye shall receive.” Riff strolls in, leans against the wall, and motions for Mouthpiece to leave. “Ya look’n for me, beautiful?”

I storm up to him and poke a finger at his chest.

“So. Tonight was all a ruse to plan a fight. And all for what? Territory? Because Tony danced with Maria?”

“That’s the broad’s name?” Riff asks with a scrunched face.

I smack him and start to breathe heavily.

“I was right. The rough gang leader was here tonight- a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You should be ashamed of yourself. They have every right to be here, same as you!”

Fed up with this, I storm off outta the gym and into an alley, all the while ignoring the faint calls from the aggravating Jet leader.
