Summertime means field season for paleontologists! And #onthisday in 1965, paleontologist Zofia Kielan-Jaworoska discovered the gigantic arms of a large theropod #dinosaur

Was this bizarre dino so ferocious it could tear apart prey with its hands? Or was there more to the story?

It took about 50 years to solve the mystery and the answer was…different.

Instead of being a terrifying animal, Deinocheirus was almost goofy (don’t get us wrong, we love the weird dinosaurs)

It was pretty big, at about 36 ft (11 m) long

But those giant arms weren’t for ripping into prey. They were more like Salad tongs, to scoop up food (plants and fish)

This dino also had a duck like bill, a large tongue, wide hips (to make space for digesting plants, so maybe it was gassy?), short legs, enormous feet, a fan of feathers on its tail, and a hump or sail on its back

Some of the headlines when scientists published an updated paper on Deinocheirus compared this dino to Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars, because it turned out to be so strange

Józef  Poniatowski’s children and descendants

Because a couple of months ago there’s been a discussion about Napoleon marshal’s children I decided I out to share with you the info about Józef Poniatowski’s issues and descendance.

Though never married, prince Józef nevertheless had two illegitimate sons.

The oldest one was Józef Szczęsny Mauricy Chmielnicki, born on the 17th of September, 1791.

The mother of the boy was most probably Poniatowski’s mistress of that time, the actress named  Małgorzata Magdalena Wiktoria “Zelia” Sitańska (though there are as well versions it might have been another woman, for example, Zelia’s step-mother, also an actress - more on the topic I wrote here)

As for the fate of the boy - in his youth (before 1807) he started a military career in the Army of... Austria. Most probably it was prince Józef himself who arranged it, because his career started in the Austrian army too. (Another question is why Poniatowski didn’t “transfer” his son into the Army of the Duchy of Warsaw after the latter had been created, but, I’m afraid, we’ll never know the answer.)

And when in 1809 Austria attacked the freshly created Duchy, Józef Chmielnicki took part in the war... on the side of the Austrians. (And his father kinda accepted this, because in his will written 3 years later, in 1812, Poniatowski mentioned not only his firstborn but as well the fact that the latter was an officer in the Austrian Army.) 

Chmielnicki fought as well in the next coalition wars, in 1812-1815 (against Napoleon as well), in 1831 he fought in defense of the Roman ecclesiastical state against local insurgents; for this he received the papal Order of St. Gregory. He also had the Austrian Military Cross. In 1856 he retired with the rank of colonel. He died unmarried in Vienna in 1860.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any image of Józef Chmielnicki, but in his military service records there is a little bit on his appearance:

Tall, of good health, very lively temperament and honest and reliable character. Polite and tidy; sometimes a bit violent and not always consistent. Zealous and active, with a special penchant for service in rifle units. He was wounded twice. He is fluent in German and Polish in speech and writing, speaks French and a little Italian. A very good staff officer, suitable for a regiment commander.

More do we know about Prince’s Józef’s other son, who was born on the 18th of December, 1809 in Warsaw and was then was given the name Józef Karol Ponitycki.

As for Józef the second mother - there are no doubts in it, it was prince Poniatowski’s another mistress,  Zofia Czosnowska née Potocka (more about her - here).

Though Czosnowska was married, prince Józef acknowledged her child and mentioned him in his will.

The boy’s mother, however, didn’t care for her child much. Having divorced her official husband she married again in 1815, then placed her son in the custody of his aunt, prince’s Józef sister countess Maria Teresa Tyszkiewicz.

In the 1821 countess Teresa became the boy's legal guardian (Czosnowska officially gave him up) and in 1828 adopted him, changing his surname from  Ponitycki to Poniatowski and adding Maurycy (Maurice) as his third name, thus making the boy the namesake of her long-term love Charles Maurice de Talleyrand.

And a little bit before, in 1826, Józef the younger gained French citizenship, and at the age of 18 (1827) he volunteered to join the French army.

The enlistment papers say that he was a healthy, blue-eyed, tall (1.79 m) blond, oval face, strong chin and aquiline nose. After graduating from school, he took part (as chasseur sergeant) in the Greek campaign in the Peloponnese (1829), later he was transferred to Algiers (1830), but he quickly returned to France.

During the July Revolution in Paris that year Poniatowski was among those soldiers who were putting it down, but when a year later the November Insurrection broke out in Poland he, together with his friend, Count of Montebello, a son of the Marshal Lannes, went to Poland to join the uprising. After the fall of the uprising, Józef returned through Galicia to France, where joined the rifle regiment as a captain and took part in the war in Algiers with Abd del-Kader in the years 1832-1836.

In 1839, driven by longing for his homeland, Poniatowski came to Kraków and made efforts to obtain permission to return to Warsaw. But the Russian Governor Paskevich refused him entrance and even tried (unsuccessfully) to confiscate) properties Józef inherited from his father and aunt.

Not being allowed to return to Poland, Poniatowski returned to France and to his regiment. He died on February 15, 1855 in Tlemcen, Algeria, and was buried there.

As for Józef Karol Poniatowski’s private life - in 1836 he married an Englishwoman, Maria Anna Semple. They have two children - a son, Józef Stanisław, born in 1837, and a daughter, Maria Teresa, a year younger.

Józef Stanisław joined the army at the age of 17 and went on the Crimean campaign. During the siege of Sevastopol, he was appointed lieutenant for his bravery. He then served in the cavalry regiment. He left the service due to ill health. In 1866 he married Léonide Marie Victoria Charner, the daughter of a French admiral, the chief commander of a sea expedition to China.

Six weeks after his marriage with Léonide Charner in 1866 he became mental ill. From 1880 until his death July 20, 1910 in Geel, Belgium, where he resided as a psychiatric patient in the wellknown Geel "Colonie des Aliénés''. (Many thanks to Werner for providing me with this information).

As for Józef Stanisław’s issue - there we have a kind of discrepancy. According the Polish sources like, for example, the Genealogy of the Descendants of the Great Sejm , he died childless but according his profile at geni.com he did have a son, named André whose descendants still live in the US. (The site doesn’t allow to see all the data but it is highly probably that the  direct male line continues till our days.)

Maria Teresa, after the death of her father, was taken care of by the Duchess d'Eckmühl, the widow of the Marshal Davout. In 1859, Maria Teresa married Louis de Guirard, Comte de Montarnal, grandson of Marshal Ney. He was an official in the Ministry of Treasury. They had seven children: three sons and four daughters. But neither of those, according both the Genealogy of the Descendants of the Great Sejm and Geni.com had issue.

What’s more, according Geni.com Józef Karol Poniatowski after the death of his first wife married again. That time he took as a wife a woman named Elżbieta Fuchs, and they have a son named Wojciech Józef. That Józef, it looks like, was married, but no information about his issue is provided.

hyba każdy polski uczeń zna nazwiska Mickiewicza i Słowackiego, większość potrafi też wymienić choć jedno z ich najsłynniejszych dzieł. Niektórzy zdają też sobie sprawę z długoletniego konfliktu między dwoma słynnymi poetami. Jednak w szkołach zwykle nie wspomina się o najbardziej kontrowersyjnych wątkach z ich życia. Właśnie na tych nieznanych wątkach SZTOS oparł swój najnowszy projekt, rapowany musical “M. kontra S. czyli niewieścim okiem Wieszczów spór”, w którego premierze miałam okazję uczestniczyć. 

Założenie jest proste. O życiu Mickiewicza (Michał Parafiniuk) i Słowackiego (Jakub Murawski) opowiadają najważniejsze kobiety w ich życiu: Maryla Wereszczakówna (Olga Warykowska) najsłynniejsza muza Mickiewicza, jego żona Celina (Zofia Ziatyk), a także matka Słowackiego, Salomea (Krystyna Dryjańska). Posród bohaterów nie może też zabraknąć mistyka Towiańskiego (Bartłomiej Gawryszewski), do którego sekty należeli Mickiewiczowie czy osławionej Ksawery Dejbel (Anna Maria Wysocka). 

Jak informuje nas już opis musicalu został on napisany całkowicie wierszem za co twórczyni, Oldze Warykowskiej należy się ogromny podziw. Forma ta idealnie pasuje do tematyki spektaklu. Piosenki to głównie musicalowe songi, choć pojawia się i rap, genialnie wykorzystany do przedstawienia mitycznych wręcz kłótni dwóch słynnych wieszczów. Perfekcyjnie napisane przez Marcina i Michała Parafiniuków i równie fenomenalnie wykonane utwory idealnie sprawdzają się w spektaklu skierowanym przecież do młodego widza. Bitwy budzą ogromne emocje zarówno na scenie jak i pośród widowni. To najbardziej widowiskowe elementy spektaklu i aż szkoda, że pojawiają się w nim jedynie dwa razy. Zachwycają się rymy, uderzająco przypominające styl Mickiewicza. 

Jeśli chodzi o scenografię to postawiono na minimalizm. Białe, ruchome podesty mają wiele zastosowań, bez problemu mogą pełnić rolę stopni, czy krzeseł, jednocześnie pozostawiając wiele wyobraźni. Ciekawiej jest w kwestii kostiumów, które choć dość nowoczesne, sprawnie nawiązują do stylu epoki: Słowacki nosi koszulę typową dla przedstawień romantycznych poetów, a Mickiewicz majestatyczne bokobrody, z których wszyscy go kojarzymy.  

Bardzo dobrze ogląda się też choreografię Antoniny Grupińskiej i Magdaleny Olędzkiej. Zarówno duety jak i sceny zbiorowe świetnie wykorzystują ruch do wzmocnienia przekazu. Sposób poprowadzenia zespołu, który w beżowych, jednolitych strojach perfekcyjnie tworzy tło, wprowadza rekwizyty i z którego wyłaniają się postaci poboczne, przywodzi za to na myśl ‘Hamiltona’. 

Co do obsady, to Michał Parafiniuk gra Mickiewicza jako człowieka przekonanego o własnym geniuszu i znaczeniu dla świata. Jest perfekcyjnym archetypem romantycznego kochanka, jednocześnie melancholijnego jak i cholerycznego, który raz po raz zmienia zdanie i nie zdaje sobie sprawy z krzywd jakie wyrządził. 

Jakub Murawski fenomenalnie sprawdza się jako Słowacki, ukochany Julcio swojej mamy, poeta i patriota, inteligentny, a także świetnie wykształcony, ale żyjący w wiecznym cieniu Mickiewicza. Jest wycofany i subtelny, póki nie przychodzi do konfrontacji z rywalem. To w scenach rapu może w pełni pokazać swoje umiejętności i to właśnie on finalnie wychodzi z nich obronną ręką. 

Ale to nie oni są prawdziwymi bohaterami tej historii, lecz trzy kobiety, bez których świat pewnie nigdy nie usłyszałby ich imion.  

Olga Warykowska olśniewa jako targana między sercem i rozumem Maryla, która musi wybrać miłość do Mickiewicza, albo wpływowego męża. Jest wspaniała w gniewie na kochliwego wieszcza i jeszcze lepsza na drugim planie, gdzie wielokrotnie kradnie całe sceny swoimi reakcjami na słowa i zachowanie Adama. 

Krystyna Dryjańska jako Salomea jest uosobieniem zakochanej w swoim syneczku matki, która podporządkowała dziecku całe życie. Emanuje z niej ciepło i troska, ale także zazdrość o syna. Ma też do odegrania chyba najbardziej dramatyczną scenę, a jej interpretacja rozdzierającej piosenki po śmierci dziecka to prawdziwa perła. 

Zofia Ziatyk gra Celinę Mickiewiczową jako uroczą, skromną dziewczynę. Jej błogi uśmiech idealnie ukrywa dość przewrotny umysł kobiety, która potrafi wykorzystać poczucie winy męża, by przejąć kontrolę nad domem. To postać tragiczna, panna z dobrego domu, która wyszła za biednego człowieka nieświadoma tego jak będzie wyglądać jej rzeczywistość i przytłoczona nią została wysłana do szpitala psychiatrycznego przez człowieka, który miał ją wspierać. 

Niestety znacznie mniej do zagrania ma Anna Maria Wysocka w roli Ksawery Dejbel, diabolicznej, ale i ponętnej kochanki Mickiewicza. Chętnie zobaczyłabym ją w większej roli, szczególnie, że jej wpływ na wieszcza był podobno równie silny co żony, jeśli nie silniejszy. 

Warto też wspomnieć Bartłomieja Gawryszewskiego, który odgrywa Towiańskiego jako mistrza marionetek dążącego do przejęcia władzy nad umysłami wszystkich członków Koła Sprawy Bożej. Jest w tym bardzo przekonujący, aż szkoda, że jego występ ogranicza się do kilku krótkich scen. 

Kończąc chciałabym jeszcze pochwalić marketing musicalu. Przez ostatnie kilka tygodni fanpage SZTOSU aż roił się od filmików, zdjęć czy nawet memów przybliżających po kolei wszystkie postaci. Twórcy perfekcyjnie podtrzymywali zainteresowanie tytułem, a także jednocześnie edukowali i bawili swoich obserwatorów, pozwalając im poznać bohaterów, jak i aktorów. Takiej promocji mogą pozazdrościć SZTOSowi największe teatry w Polsce. 

Podsumowując, “M. kontra S. czyli niewieścim okiem Wieszczów spór” to naprawdę dobry, świetnie wykonany musical, pełen ciekawie napisanych piosenek i porządnych kreacji aktorskich, dzięki którym postaci z podręczników stają się prawdziwymi ludźmi. Polecam fanom Mickiewicza, Słowackiego, rapu, ale i musicali jako takich. Mam też nadzieję, że spektakl na dłużej zagości na warszawskiej scenie, bo spokojnie może rywalizować z produkcjami renomowanych teatrów. 

Ale to tylko moja opinia, a ja nie jestem obiektywna.

Witcher Slash Fic Rec - Wiosna

Pairing - Geralt/Emhyr. Rating - M. 50000 words.

Canon blind reading - I don't feel this is going to make sense without canon understanding.

Rec because - If you are done with winter already and need some spring in your life this is for you! I don't know how a fic can feel like a season. But this one definitely has that. It's got a joyful happy ending. It's a really joyful fic. Not fluffy, pretty dark and intense. But really joyful. Ends with a kiteflying competition! <3

Something really unique in my opinion is the cultural vibe. It feels grounded in the same cultural vibe of the canon. Even the prose feels like it's got that vibe. Dark, melancholy, evocative, hopeful.

Beautiful hurt/comfort old school slash fic. Midlife crisis emotionally messed up dudes. No big plot. 100% characterization and interiority focus. The pacing is gentle and it gets the feelings to soak. Like slowcooker chicken soup if slowcooker chicken soup has got lots and lots of smut.

The smut is really hot and also we get a lot of it. Complicated power dynamics. The relationship arc is beautiful.

Not really bombastic. No high drama or big moments. But it's got a sneaky undercurrent with really dark folklore which gets resolved and feels like the winter to spring transition.

Geralt's characterization feels true to Canon Geralt. Really other, really jaded, really cautious but also hopeful. Same for Ciri. Emhyr's characterization is brilliant. He is messed up and messy is fun in fic.

Two big relationship arcs. Geralt/Emhyr is the romance. Ciri's reconcilation with Emhyr is the platonic side. It's not really a fixit because nothing gets fixed which makes sense for this canon. I don't know how to explain. But I feel the intricacy/nuance made the relationship arcs more beautiful in this case.

It gets the twisted Rumpelstiltskin type canon vibe with a happy ending.

Getting a Vibe Quote is super hard because it's a flowing fic and hard to excerpt. But it's great. Trust me! <3

The last thing you remember is everything going to hell as you were swept out to sea...

A man roughly prods you and checks your pockets, trying to get a sense of what you're worth. You are trying to gather your strength to fight back, but your feeble protests are ignored. "Nah. Their clothes are well-made but it's not the fashion. That said... some of these guys look strong, would be good for labor or some kind of gladiator gigs. And the beauties, heh... I'll keep that winged little angel for myself. The rest we'll sell quick, and high. There's no witch fodder to be had here."

Studniówka 2023 – pełna relacja wideo from RAMPA on Vimeo.

4 lutego 2023 roku, w restauracji Royal Manor w Garfield, NJ, miejsce miała studniówka uczniów szkół zrzeszonych w Centrali Polskich Szkół Dokształcających w Ameryce.

Uczniowie ostatnich klas polskich szkół dokształcających, zwykle biorą udział w studniówce, aby dotrzymać polskiej tradycji przygotowań do zdania polskiej matury. 

W studniówce udział wzięło ponad 600 osób – wśród nich ponad 260 maturzystów z 32 polskich szkół. Dodatkowo, osoby towarzyszące, rodzice, nauczyciele i zaproszeni goście. Wśród gości, delegacja z Polski: Bartosz Rybak, pełnomocnik Ministra ds. Polonii; Piotr Semeniuk, Dyrektor Departamentu Współpracy Międzynarodowej Ministerstwa Edukacji i Nauki, Pełnomocnik Ministra Edukacji i Nauki; Krzysztof Krzemieniecki, radca z Departamentu Współpracy Międzynarodowej MEiN; Justyna Kralisz, Dyrektor Ośrodka Rozwoju Polskiej Edukacji za Granicą (ORPEG); dr Zofia Sawicka, zastępca dyrektora Narodowej Agencji Wymiany Akademickiej (NAWA), dr Paweł Maciąg, Instytut Rozwoju Języka Polskiego im. Św. M. M. Kolbe. 

Gośćmi honorowymi byli również: Ojciec Tadeusz Lizińczyk, kapelan CPSD; Adrian Kubicki – Konsul Generalny RP w Nowym Jorku, Mateusz Gmura – wicekonsul, przedstawiciele Polsko-Słowiańskiej Federalnej Unii Kredytowej z przewodniczącym Rady Dyrektorów Krzysztofem Matyszczykiem oraz Franciszkiem Piwowarczykiem, który pełni też funkcję Głównego Marszałka Parady Pułaskiego 2023.

Podczas balu absolwenci otrzymali certyfikaty pieniężne, ufundowane przez Polsko-Słowiańską Federalną Unię Kredytową. Po raz pierwszy w tym roku – przy współpracy z Ministerstwem Edukacji i Nauki w Polsce – wylosowano również 10 osób, które pojadą na wycieczkę po Polsce. Dodatkowo, trzy osoby zostały zwycięzcami nagród w wysokości $1000, ufundowanych przez Instytut Rozwoju Języka Polskiego im. Św. M. M. Kolbe. 

Nie zabrakło podziękowań dla wychowawców, nauczycieli, rodziców i zarządu CPSD – w tym prezes Centrali, dr Doroty Andraka.

Dla młodzieży była to wyjątkowa noc – wielu uczniów mówiło o tym, jak polska szkoła wpłynęła na ich życie – to w polskiej szkoli nawiązali wartościowe przyjaźnie, pielęgnowali język polski, kultywowali swoje pochodzenie i polską tradycję. Choć tęsknić będą za polską szkołą, są pewni, że zdobyta wiedza i doświadczenie zaprocentują w ich przyszłości zawodowej. Tej nocy wielu przyznało: bawili się jak nigdy, w rytm największych przebojów, ale również, polskich hitów. Za oprawę muzyczną wydarzenia odpowiedzialny był Tomasz Popławski – DJ Junior – wraz ze swoim zespołem ludzi.

General Sikorsky

After the German invasion of the USSR on July 30, 1941, Sikorsky signed with I. M. Maysky, the Soviet ambassador to England, an agreement with the USSR on the resumption of diplomatic relations and a pact on the creation of the Polish army in the East. In 1941-1942, he participated in the creation of the Polish Anders Army, which was formed in the Buzuluk area and subsequently transferred to the Middle East. However, soon the discovery and publication by the Germans of the Katyn burial led to Sikorsky's break with Moscow. In April 1943, these relations were formally severed by the Stalin government, after Sikorsky demanded an investigation into the Katyn shooting of the Polish military.

In connection with the facts of the Katyn shooting revealed in April 1943, Sikorsky made sharp accusations against the USSR, in particular, demanding that Churchill break off relations with the USSR. A few weeks later, General Vladislav Sikorsky, his daughter Zofia and Chief of Staff Tadeusz Klimecki were killed in a plane crash on July 4, 1943 near Gibraltar. The Liberator II AL523 crashed into the sea 16 seconds after takeoff. Sikorsky's goal was to inspect Anders' army contingents in the Middle East. Some modern historians argue that this most likely was not an accident[6][7]. Czech pilot Eduard Prhal (1911-1984), who never wore a life jacket, put it on during this flight and remained alive[8]. The general was buried with honors, in the presence of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, at the cemetery of Polish pilots in Newark [9], near Nottingham (Nottinghamshire). On September 17, 1993, his ashes were transported to Poland and buried on Wawel in Cracow
