Unpopular opinion, but I don't think that Eddie and Nancy would get along. If she tried to help him study she'd get frustrated that he wasn't getting it, that he was getting distracted so easily, that he wasn't learning the same way she does, and she'd just end up angry with him. She'd look at him like she was trying to explode him with her mind. Eddie would think she's a priss, and stubborn, and a bad teacher. Instead of actually helping him learn she's trying to brute force the correct answers out of him. Who does she think she is, Ms O'Donnell?

writing my silly little fic and again im struck with how much opportunities they missed by pretending the s2 stancy breakup wasn't messy, specifically for Nancy's guilt about barb and forcing herself to grow up too fast
like s1 Nancy spends one night being a stupid teenager goofing off at her boyfriend's party and staying over to get spicy while Barb goes home. then she later realizes Barb disappeared and died that one night she was letting go and having fun. this is widely recognized trauma for her and informs a lot if not most of her actions through the rest of the show
in season 2 she's feeling the weight of it more around the first year anniversary. steve trys to help by taking her to a party to forget for a little while and 'be stupid teenagers' for a night. a perfectly set up parallel already
the way the show wants it to go, we get the bullshit argument, they fight, allegedly break up at some point, and nancy sleeps with Jonathan. later steve tells her to go with him and we're supposed to read it as Steve stepping back so jancy can happen. we're supposed to be seeing this as a happy ending.
but with the material we're given this would have been the perfect place for an emotional repeat of season 1 for nancy. she and steve go to the party and pretend to be stupid teenagers for the night. but oh no! nancy lets lose too much, lets herself relax and drink and dance, and the next day her boyfriend's pissed. hes saying she said things she never remembered saying and its hurt him and she doesn't know what to do. and kids around school are talking about them breaking up at the party, and that fits with Steve's anger she saw, so they must've broken up right? it sucks, even if she wasn't in love with him, that'd be the worst way to break up with someone (especially if she's confusing platonic and romantic feelings or convincing herself it has to be romantic when she really just values him as a friend)
and then she doesn't have time to work it out, she needs to go with Jonathan to avenge barbs 'disappearance' to give her family closure. She's got a lot of conspiracy shit to do and its stressful. so when murray starts going off about how she's not really in love with steve, how she actually likes Jonathan and he seems to like her back. they finished a lot of the hard work with the conspiracy stuff, she can let her guard down and have a quick good night.
then the next day is chaos. demodogs and labs and will being possessed. It a rough fucking day. Steve tells her to go with Jonathan while they get the mindflayer out of Will, civil like they're on good terms so she does (and thank god she did because that was rough and they needed all the help they could get)
and then everything's fine again, with the upside down. and it looks like she handled things better this time, was about to relax occasionally and still made it through.
except apparently she and steve didn't break up. he thought it was just a few fights, that they put their shit aside for the apocalypse and now they can work things out.
and it could ruin nancy. a year later and she's still hasn't learned her lesson, that letting her guard down hurts the people she cares about, that relaxing and having fun makes her lose people. its her fault for the messy breakup with Steve and its her fault that barb is gone. she's the reason she's lost friends close to her, 2 for 2, and now she only has Jonathan left (and what do you know, season 3 has her conflict with Jonathan and in season 4 she's not let anyone else get truly close to her and fred still dies)
you see what i mean?? by having conflict magical resolve itself in the background we loose so much powerful, painful character drama for her. our girl who thinks she has to keep the world around her up solely on her shoulders because she can't handle the loss of her best friend in season 1. Nancy who desperately wants to be normal and have people she loves but keeps losing them, through factors both in and out of her control, but feels like everything has to be her fault just because some things were.
and to be fair, that story is still present in the show. its there and definitely compelling, but it could've been even more so. i feel like if maybe there was less 'nancy has to be a strong independent girlboss' in there (abd it's definitely there, they want to make a point of making her a Strong Woman Character so bad) and she was allowed to have mistakes acknowledged by the narrative, this is the direction it would've gone. She could've been an excellent example of well written women who are strong and awesome through their own right instead of the narrative trying to make us like her

Haters whining that Steve would be oh so sad if Robin and Nancy got together makes me actually want to see it. Toxic friend Steve who is irrationally mad at Robin for "dating his ex" and Robin actually feels... so heartbroken that her best friend is turning against her like this. She doesn't understand - she's loved Nancy for years and Nancy loves her back. She's finally gathered the courage to ask her out and Nancy said yes. She didn't hate her, didn't shun her, didn't find her disgusting or sick - she loved her back. And for the first time in her life, Robin feels a little bit hopeful for her future - she's loveable and loved and she's not doomed to life alone as her friends move on and marry and have kids. She has someone who understands this fear and horror and happiness in a way no one but another girl like her could, and she thought... she thought Steve would be happy for her. She finally found love.
But Steve is just offended that she'd choose hoes over bros or whatever.

Ao3 authors are out there writing life changing masterpieces for free while the Duffer brothers are completely unable to create a single decent character arc even though they are getting paid for it
I mean most fic authors could write better endings for stranger things characters any day but the duffer brothers would never be able to create pure gold stories like The Lathe or The Most Remarkable Thing

fics that make all the characters act so enraged about steve forgiving billy for beating him up will always make me laugh. somehow jonathan and nancy are questioning steve too? all these characters have seen violence straight up and partaken in it but when it comes to billy, yall are like what omg we need to make billy apologize a billion times and get a trillion shovel talks from his trashy ex and other trashy, irrelevant characters.
please be so serious right now

once again thinking about the boat scene and how “not wasting a second” is an “unambiguous sign of true love” and how that more directly applies to robin going in after nancy than it does to nancy going in after steve especially with the extra emphasis added to that scene in which eddie tries to get robin to stay on the boat but she dives in anyway and also the earlier parallels where nancy is looking at steve but robin is looking and nancy and then i dissolve

ooooo can i ask for some PROM NIGHT EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT wip? <33
[WIP Wednesday! On a Monday]
(Man I wanted so bad to work on the bit where Vickie and Robin flirt terribly but it's more Sad Eddie and Nancy Time I Guess.)
Nancy finds him on the 50-yard line. She slips out of her heels, lines them neatly on the track, and walks barefoot across the sprinkler-cool grass to join him.
Standing he’d filled out the suit pretty well, his height compensating for the fact they hadn’t the time or money to get it tailored. But now, hunched over himself on the 50-yard line, Nancy sees how the jacket gaps at his chest, how the shoulders lift to make his neck look shorter, rising to his jaw like a pair of soccer shinguards slapped on a last minute “warrior” Halloween costume.
“It’s not the first time someone’s said that to me,” he says as she sits beside him. “Fuck them.” She doesn’t use that word often but something about Eddie’s tone reached into her throat and wrenched it out of her. For him. A gift. “Sometimes I think.” The school kept the floodlights on, the field awash in harsh, unforgiving white light. It was meant to be a deterrent, to keep students in the gym and out of trouble. The superintendent himself could march out here and ask them to leave and Nancy would sink her hands into the soil, dig her heels into the turf. “Sometimes I think they’re right.”
The bottom falls out of Nancy’s stomach and the first thing out of her mouth is, “That’s mean.” Eddie turns to her, tear-streaked face malleable with sympathy, like he knew she’d need comfort when faced with the reality of hos situation, and fuck that, fuck that. She holds tight to the dense briar of rage deep in her ribcage and says, “You’re being mean.” He double-takes like a cartoon character—not with his usual deflecting bombast, like he’s genuinely shocked and unsettled. “What?”
“It’s MEAN to Mike, and to Dustin, and to Erica and Lucas and Max, and to Robin and Steve and your uncle, after everything your uncle has done you’re going to say that?”
“Nancy—”
“It’s mean to yourself Eddie, sometimes you’re so mean to yourself I want to scream—” “Nancy…” “—and it’s mean to ME. You’re being mean to me.”
“Nancy.”
“You’d rather be dead than be my friend?”

no no PLEASE elaborate on nasty steve
yes yes YES
cw // internalised homophobia, general assholeishness
steve refuses to actually kiss billy at first. because that’s gay. only he doesn’t say it as nice as that. and what he does say, he says to billy’s face. and billy doesn’t like that.
and steve doesn’t like that billy doesn’t like that.
see, billy knows he can be an asshole, too. knows he is an asshole to pretty much everyone around him most days. he’s not denying that.
but steve. steve can be downright mean. will come out with the most cutting shit during an argument. knows just how to hit someone where it hurts.
he can be a real manipulative bastard too, sometimes. without even meaning to. without even realising, it seems.
that or he just doesn’t care.
billy tries not to think too much into it.
steve doesn’t have a great filter when he’s pissed off. sometimes it’s actually worse than billy’s. he’ll say something. something mean and unnecessary. and billy won’t talk to him for the rest of the day.
he’ll say something to upset billy on purpose.
because that’s steve’s defence.
and billy will wake up at three in the morning to a drunk asshole climbing through his window. slipping into his bed. kissing billy in the dark. whispering a thousand i’m sorry, baby’s and i didn’t mean it’s.
and that would be nice.
if it wasn’t for the blanket of darkness steve uses to pretend it’s not billy he’s kissing. if steve didn’t act like it never happened the next day. if it wasn’t basically a routine with how often he did it.
and that’s A Thing for steve, billy’s found out. drinking. telling billy how much he means to him. telling billy how much he hates himself. falling asleep in billy’s lap after pressing salty kisses all over billy’s face.
neither knows which one of them is crying. maybe both. they don’t talk about it.
some days, when billy’s sick of steve’s shit, he tells him. tells steve it isn’t the end of the fucking world. tells steve that no one has to know. not like billy’s going to go around broadcasting it.
at first steve says there’s nothing to say. he likes girls. and he likes how billy feels. and they enjoy each other’s company. kind of.
then steve tells billy that he wouldn’t get it. and. isn’t that just the funniest thing. billy wouldn’t get it. wouldn’t get how hard it is. wouldn’t know firsthand how certain people would react.
steve fucks around, too.
apparently he did before. according to the whole of hawkins high. but then nancy happened. and steve was committed. and then billy arrived. and then nancy didn’t happen.
so yeah. steve fucks around.
says that’s what him and billy are doing anyway so what’s it matter. gets annoyed when billy asks who steve fucked that day. even called billy clingy, once. just for asking.
and billy wouldn’t care.
if steve didn’t act like billy did a terrible awful thing each time billy sleeps with someone else. if he didn’t get so pissy when billy mentions the double standard.
he doesn’t seem to care as much if billy sleeps with a girl. apparently it’s not cheating if billy’s not the one face down. billy wonders when his life became all about gay politics.
and.
it sounds bad. it sounds like hard work. and it is. hard work.
but billy always comes back. every time.
because steve’s an asshole.
sure.
but he can be okay, too.
sweet, even.
sometimes.
billy thinks about steve keeping a cassette in his car, just for billy. that time he rented a movie and invited billy round because billy mentioned he liked it. the way steve will whisper in his ear and tell him how beautiful he is. the no one else takes it like you, baby’s and the bruises on his hips. the way he’ll beg billy to come round because i didn’t get to see you yesterday. how that could almost sound like an ‘i miss you’ if billy listened hard enough. the way steve tucks billy’s hair behind his ear occasionally.
how he’ll look at billy as if he could actually love him.
sometimes.
and it kinda feels worth it.
