Jamie sometimes told people that eir power was the ability to see auras. It wasn’t a lie, strictly speaking, but it wasn’t entirely accurate either. Jamie wasn’t quite sure what it was ey saw, or if there was even a name for them, but ey were pretty sure that actual auras didn’t rub off on everything the person touched.

Sometimes Jaimie said that eir power was tracking. This wasn’t accurate either. That was just what ey most frequently used it for. Following someone for miles two days after they’d passed by was easy if their footsteps remained, glowing blue or scarlet or golden. It was slightly less easy if there had been heavy foot traffic, other footprints mingling with the ones ey sought, but Jamie had yet to meet two people with the exact same shade, and ey could usually pick out the prints ey wanted.

(“Not even twins?” ey’d been asked on multiple occasions. “Not even identical twins?”

“No,” ey’d answered each time, and sometimes added, “twins are rarely even in the same color group.”)

Ey did not tell people, not most people anyway, that disguises didn’t work on em. Putting on a mask didn’t do much when everyone glowed a distinct color. But secret identities were kind of really important, and Jamie had gotten good at pretending not to know that, for example, Clara (the barista down the street, and very good at her job) was also Shrinking Violet, the sizeshifting vigilante, on her days off. Ey did find this particular alias a bit amusing, since Clara was not violet, but the goldest goldenrod ey’d ever seen, but it was hardly eir place to say so.

Jamie also didn’t tell anyone that there were borrowers living in eir house. Jamie had known the first time ey came over to look at the place, of course. There were tiny hand- and foot-prints everywhere. Dark blue ones (a pretty cerulean), purple ones (a dark violet), and light blue ones (periwinkle, like the color of wispy clouds in springtime). Three borrowers, plus any that stayed in the walls all the time. The cerulean ones were most frequent, and Jamie figured they must belong to the main provider for the family. (It almost certainly had to be a family of some sort, or a close knit group of friends, because the footprints almost always went in pairs or trios, and Cerulean —since ey didn’t know their names, Jamie referred to them in eir head by their colors— was the only one who ventured out of the walls alone.)

Jamie didn’t mind the borrowers in the least. This wasn’t the first time ey’d lived with borrowers before, and ey rather liked knowing that someone was there even when the house seemed empty. (Jamie had briefly considered living in a haunted house, but being able to see ghosts was a different thing than being able to hear them, and from what ey’d heard, ghosts tended to be chatty. Best to leave the haunted houses to regular mediums.)

Aside from Jamie and the borrowers, the house had one other occupant: a young man about Jamie’s age, named Roman. Jamie and Roman didn’t know each other very well, but they had agreed to split the rent and generally stay out of each other’s way, and they got on alright. Sometimes they would have a meal together, or watch a movie, but they didn’t interact much otherwise. It wasn’t unfriendly, and in fact their occasional interactions were usually pleasant, but they were more ‘acquaintances’ than 'friends.’

One day, Jamie came home to find some disturbing marks in the kitchen. At first glance, nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. Roman’s footsteps (a very boisterous red that suited his personality to a T) came through the door, went to the counter on which a plate of cookies sat, and then went out again and upstairs. However, when Jamie looked at the counter at which Roman had stood, ey saw two sets of minuscule footprints. Dark blue and purple. Jamie traced their path with eir eyes.

The borrowers had entered by way of the gap between the oven and the wall, which was their usual entrance to the kitchen. They’d climbed over the top of the oven, hopped down onto the backboard, and from there onto the counter. There were a few handprints for steadying, mostly on the back of the stove, but not many, going this way. It did look like Cerulean had given Violet a hand down, though. There was a pair of dark blue footprints facing back toward the stove.

From there, the borrowers had gone straight to the plate of cookies Jamie had baked yesterday, and which ey’d offered freely to Roman. None of the cookies had marks on them, besides a smudge of red where Roman had accidentally brushed his fingers against one cookie while picking up another, and a few bits of green (dark, mossy) around their edges from Jamie arranging them on the plate, but a trail of purple footprints lead from the edge of the plate to near the pile of cookies, and then back again to where Cerulean had waited, so Jamie knew the borrowers must have taken one.

Ey would have been pleased with this except that about halfway back to their entrance/exit, the footprints changed. The borrowers had stood still, Cerulean a cookie’s length in front of Violet, and then the tracks were further apart, indicating running. Violet had a longer stride than Cerulean. And while Violet’s tracks made it all the way back to their entrance (with what looked like a panicked scramble up the baseboard and over the top of the stove), Cerulean’s just stopped mid-pace over six inches away. There was a red mark just in front of where Cerulean’s footprints stopped, as well as a few red fingerprints, each outsizing the borrowers’ footprints, off to the side.

All of this takes quite a while to read and even longer to say, but Jamie took it all in in a matter of seconds. Ey winced. Then, with a sigh, Jamie went upstairs to go have a talk with eir housemate.

It was late and Bucky was both mentally and physically drained as he finally got back to the farm. Not only had the battle been particularly vicious that day, but what he'd found once they'd started sweeping the base.... Shifting the thankfully-sleeping (and really, thank god) child in his grip, Bucky gently pushed the door open. "Hey, babe?" he said softly. "We've got a... situation here." The kid in his arms shifted with a small whine, tiny horns showing through curly black hair.

He’d been trying to keep busy while Bucky was out working. That was a hell of a lot harder to do though once Connor was asleep. The kid had some really keen hearing and he couldn’t simply go to the garage and cut away his worries with the band saw. The last time he had tried that, the little werewolf child had stayed up for five hours straight. He’d learned his lesson. He had to pick some far more quiet activities, like pouring over blue prints and listening to the news with the volume level on supremely low.Rogers only checked his watch again once he heard a hand settle on the door knob. The smile on his face was practically instinctual as he went to greet his husband at the door while he tucked the pencil behind his ear. His expression though, fell with surprise as he picked up on the tone of the vampire’s voice. It didn’t take long for him to exactly see what the situation was. “Oh shit,” he whispered, gaze flicking between the child in Bucky’s arms and his husband’s face. The wolf slowly moved back, mainly to let the pair further into the house. He quickly shut the door behind them, locking the door before he checked out the window. His husband was fantastic about not being followed, but with the kid being here… he wasn’t going to take too many chances. “Alright…uh, what happened out there?” he uttered as he gawked at the kid, eyes locked on what looked like the beginnings of horns. What the hell enhanced folk had horns?

Okay so this started as a reponse to an ask game, but it ended up being Long, so I wanted to post it separately... Also it took like an hour. I felt like it works better on its own hehe.

The Confession

I had come aboard with them about a year prior, after I happened to bump into Jet, an old friend from many years ago. I was looking for a change and came on board with him, Spike, Ed, and of course Ein, on the Bebop. I'd never met Spike before but I very quickly developed a crush on him. I mean, who wouldn't, he's young, he's cute, he's charismatic.

He's a slacker and Jet is a bit of a hardass… It felt like I was always getting in between the bickering arguments that they had. Jet is a great friend and frankly, a lot of the time, he was in the right, but I couldn't help but take Spike's side. Spike would get all gloaty and proud and come up and wrap his arm around me and say "See! Jamie agrees with me!" And I'd blush real hard… Spike never noticed it, that I know of. Jet would though and he would fix me with a hard stare that said "you knew I was in the right! What is going on with you?" And I would just look away because I didn't want to admit that I liked a guy like Spike.

Slowly, casual touching became more common place. I still had no idea if he liked me back, though… It's Spike, it could just be flirting. Lots of him getting kisses from Ein, the dog, and saying stuff like "you jealous?" And like… accidental walk ins on the shower. It was a solid month of flirting before I realized I should hit the brakes… Crippling self doubt set in. I thought no one can possibly like me, certainly not Spike. Talking to him was too painful, so I didn't.

That's when Jet came in. He sat me down and asked what was wrong and I told him. "Listen, it personally grinds my gears seeing you two all flirty and joking around with each other... But it's so much harder seeing you barely look him in the eye." Jet explained. "I think you kids need to sort it out yourself, but... I think you'll both be better off if you're honest with each other."

Just like all of Jet's advice, I decided to ignore it. I was miserable, but I was sure Jet was just being nice and that being honest would only make it all awkward and painful. Until, one day, Jet was out with Ed, leaving Spike and I on our own. I was reading a book, feeling a little down. I missed Spike. I missed even being a friend but it was too hard because every time I saw him I just fell for him harder.

Spike came over, lifted my legs off the couch, and sat down under them. I asked what he was doing, he made some quip about me taking up all the space, and something must have shifted in my face because he asked if I was alright.

"Quite frankly, no, I'm not," I replied, with a sad smile.

"Well, we can't have that then!" He put on a music record, and pulled me up to dance with him. I blushed deeply and tried to save face as we boogied down to one of Jet's records. I started to laugh, he laughed, it was actually going okay. But then there was a slow song and Spike pulled me in close. I pulled back, firmly placing us apart with arms extended. "Come on, we're not related!" He joked and pulled me in closer.

Queue blushing.

I was stuck looking into his eyes, and worst of all, he was looking back into mine. He wasn't making any jokes… we were just standing there. Swaying slowly. He was so god damn beautiful.

You know how some people see something like the grand Canyon, or a beautiful piece of art, or the ocean, and it simply moves them to tears. It moves them because of how wonderful it looks, how amazing it is that you and that thing not only exist in the same timeline, but can see each other, you can walk in that sand and swim in that ocean. That's how I felt, drowning in his deep, brown eyes. Drowning in his presence, drowning in the irreparable despair that no matter how much I loved the ocean, the grand canyon, that piece of art, no matter how much I loved him, by their nature they could not love me back.

And then we kissed

I couldn't tell you who kissed who… I don't think it matters.

It was soft and gentle but also firm. He held the back of my head gently. We pulled apart.

Queue blushing.

"Did you... mean to do that?" I asked, hesitantly.

Spike grinned widely, smiling wider and with more joy than I'd ever seen before. He nodded. "Yeah, I sure did!" He pulled me in again, more passionately this time, holding onto me like he never planned on letting go, our lips crashing against each other. Making up for lost time.

The door opened, suddenly. "Finally!" Jet shouted. "I'm glad you kids worked it out!" We pulled apart, the kiss broken from smiling, as Jet clapped us both on the back.

And we've been together ever since.

Wow, this is the first really interesting RP i've seen in the tags in a while!! I'm having fun pouring over the lore and pages. I know you have a wanted connections list, but in general, do you have any TYPES of characters you think would be useful to the dash, or from certain organizations? Fitting In

I am far too concerned about little details, so here’s a fill-in. This takes place before the epilogues in A Breath of Snow and Ashes, and contains spoilers for that book.

If you’re better off not reading the stories that get too deep into religious content, let me know if there’s a specific tag that you’re filtering, I’m not quite sure yet how I’m going to tag these going forward, so here’s your chance to influence it.

The sound of the blaring alarm clock slowly brought a groggy Bree to wakefulness. She blinked open her eyes, and fought the strong temptation to turn the damn thing off and go back to sleep. Up until now, Mandy had handled moving residences calmly, not seeming to notice changes in either century or location. But this last change had not gone as smoothly. Whether it was the fact that, at 18 months, she was now old enough to be more aware of her surroundings and be particular about them, or just that something about Inverness disagreed with her, her sleep had been horribly disrupted these last few nights since the move, resulting in Bree’s sleep being lacking as well. Mandy had finally fallen into a sound sleep around 4am, giving Bree a solid 3 hours until the alarm clock woke her so that she could get herself and the kids ready for mass at Saint Mary’s in Inverness.

But why bother going to mass today? She was too tired to focus, and once Mandy was woken up, she was likely to be cranky all morning due to her lack of sleep. Brianna sighed, and pulled herself out of bed before shutting off the alarm. Mass today wasn’t just for herself. She didn’t want to do anything that would give the busybodies of the congregation (or worse, the priest) reason to judge her. There would be enough of that as it was. Not only was she an outsider coming in – a sassenach, as her father affectionately referred to her mother – , but she was attending with just her and the kids.

Bree wasn’t actually sure if things would be better or worse once it was known that she did indeed have a husband, and a church-going one at that. Having a mixed marriage had raised a few eyebrows back home. Here, the main reason that the heavily outnumbered Catholics weren’t warned daily of their pending damnation was that their Presbyterian neighbours assumed the message had already been delivered. With the relations being so much more strained, the mix would be even more outrageous.

And that’s before Roger figures out what’s happened to his vocation to ministry.

Having taken the time needed to wake up enough to get out of bed, she grabbed a bathrobe and tied it tightly closed before she left the bedroom in search of some coffee and some breakfast. If she was going to play the part of a devout mother who would never consider neglecting her Sunday obligation in the name of a few hours more sleep, she would do so while well-caffeinated and on a full stomach.

Despite having left herself ample time to drive to the church, a couple of wrong turns followed by a search for parking resulted in Bree rushing up to the front door, Jem in tow, Mandy in her arms, shortly before mass started. Things were not looking good. With the perversity inherent to all toddlers, Mandy had reacted to her lack of sleep by being high-energy (once she got over being woken up). Jem was behaving as well as he ever did, but that wasn’t saying a lot in terms of sitting quietly.

At the door of the church, Bree paused and reflexively patted her head. Upon encountering nothing but her hair, she remembered where and when she was, and converted the motion into smoothing her hair. She was apparently so tired that she was reverting to her teens. Despite her two years’ practice with the new mass – not to mention the two children with her – she seemed to be expecting to walk in to a Latin mass. And wouldn’t that do a wonderful job of convincing everyone that she had been to church some time in the last decade, if she got her responses mixed up.

There was a small table with a couple of missals left on it just inside the door, and she snagged one for Jem. Neither reading nor following along with the order of mass were enough to keep him distracted, but hopefully these were the kind that included stories about the lives of the saints whose feast days were being celebrated this month. Presumably he’d find something sufficiently gory to keep him from needing to look for some other form of entertainment.

The processional hadn’t started playing yet, although Bree had to squeeze past the priest and altar servers at the back of the church to get into the nave. Not wanting to take the time to let Jem and Mandy be picky about where to sit, she got moved them to an empty pew she spotted about a third of the way back, and hurried genuflected in the direction of the old altar as she set Mandy down just inside the pew. Bree had just enough time to sling the bag of books and dolls off her shoulder and on to the seat before the processional hymn was announced. Kneeling just long enough for a quick “Please let us all make it through mass without anyone melting down”, Bree grabbed a hymnal and brusquely motioned for Jem to do the same while she leafed through it.

To her surprise, the mass was sung. The priest had a good voice, and even the ability to vary the note he was singing, and Bree lost herself in the ritual, the familiar Latin and Greek responses helping her find a peace that she hadn’t expected to be able to find this morning, following her harried night. Jem and Mandy even seemed to sense her mood, because Jem was on his best behaviour, and Mandy had decided to imitate him in sitting in the pew (although Jem had rather less of a tendency to suck his thumb, and lacked an older brother with a shoulder at a convenient height for resting a head.)

At the Prayers of the Faithful, Bree mentally added her parents’ names to the list of the dead being prayed for. For some reason, when she was at church she could acknowledge the fact that both Jamie and Claire were long dead. At any other time her mind shied away from the thought, preferring to work instead in the strange personal timeline she had lived, where it was not more than two hundred years ago that her parents had bid her farewell, but less than a year, skipping over all the years that she had not herself lived.

After mass was over, Bree lingered over gathering up their things, accepting compliments on how well the children had behaved themselves from the old ladies she had been worried about making a good impression on. By the time that she and the children made it to the back of the church, nearly everyone else had left. Just outside the open doors, a last couple were finishing up their conversation with the priest when Jem remarked in a conversational tone (and volume)

“I think I like mass here. It’s less boring than at St. Finbar’s.” Bree could see the grins on the faces of the couple as they walked away, and felt herself blush. At least he didn’t say it was the other way around.

The priest managed (mostly) to keep his smile friendly as he came up to Jem and bent down slightly to be at the same level. “I’m glad to hear that ye enjoyed the mass. Will we be seeing you again then?”

A little surprised by the realisation that other people had heard what he said, Jem got suddenly shy. Bree answered for him.

“We hope to keep coming, Father. We just moved to Inverness, and are trying to buy a farm nearby that turns out to have been built by an ancestor of mine. Hopefully it works out, and this will be home now.”

“Weel, I look forward to seeing ye and yer sweet bairns again. Have a good week.”

With that he walked inside to lock up, leaving Bree and the kids to make their way to the car.

 As she navigated the unfamiliar streets back to the flat, Bree scoffed at herself for being so worried about if she’d be welcome at church. No questions about where the kids’ father was, no pointed remarks, not even any subtle fishing. And to think that she hadn’t been willing to risk someone noticing that she’d been in town for more than a week before she showed up for mass. She gave up that sleep for nothing. Well, maybe not nothing. At least she made it to mass.
