just remembered being 18 and having an embarrassing crush on this actress. it was feb 2020. pandemic had just begun. lockdown was imminent. and for some reason in the midst of all this my brain decides to hyperfixate on this girl that looks like she jumped straight out of the 80s
#sorry but why was my taste so#...yt#my memories of early 2020 are just colored by this#i remember this show came out a day after my bday#i watched the whole thing in a day#didn't really like it#looking back now i do appreciate the carrie reference and the honest portrayal of how rough and unglamorous teenagehood can be#but it just felt like another stranger things-esque show to me#idk i was just tired of the telekinesis plot. if i remember correctly a lot of movies and tv shows at the time had it#the show also dissolved into half baked tropes#and the dialogue and script was weak too#anyway im just ranting atp lool#sophia lillis#i am not okay with this#personal

Salvaged from the ruins of Beirut after 1982, Abu Ali's early film has only recently been made available. Shooting under extraordinary conditions, the director, who worked with Godard on his Ici et Ailleurs (Here and Elsewhere), and founded the PLO's film division, covers conditions in Lebanon's refugee camps, the effects of Israeli bombardments, and the lives of guerrillas in training camps. They Do Not Exist is a stylistically unique work which demonstrates the intersection between the political and the aesthetic. Now recognised as a cornerstone in the development of Palestinian cinema, the film only received its Palestine premiere in 2003, when a group of Palestinian artists "smuggled" the director to a makeshift cinema in his hometown of Jerusalem (into which Israel bars his entry). Abu Ali, who saw his film for the first time in 20 years at this clandestine event noted: "We used to say 'Art for the Struggle', now it's 'Struggle for the Art'"
