This is unrelated to the blog's subject, but I'm SUPER hyped about this upcoming indie game called Critter Cove and I've got some super cool news; I got to give the devs some critter designs to show up as Townies you can invite to live in your town!

This isn't even all of them-- in total I've made well over 40 designs that they're gonna pick and choose from. These ones are just some of my favorites.

This character creator is CRAZY good. It's hard to find animals you can't make. Cow, squid, human, raptor, duck, I was even able to make a half-decent Anomalocaris up there. The ones that are difficult to make, like giraffes, horses, and insects, are actually planned to be added in soon.

Critter Cove plays like a mix between Animal Crossing and Subnautica. You sail around to collect scrap from the remains of sunken ruins, rebuild a rundown town on a polluted island, and make it appealing for both residents and visitors. There's also a plan to add a museum feature, dozens of islands, fishing mechanics, and even co-op in the future.

(but co-op will only come if the game's enough of a hit, which is why I'm shamelessly plugging it lmaoo)

It's launching into Early Access on September 10th, but it's got a VERY generous free demo which is only supposed to be "the first two hours" of the game...

...and I'm clocking 61.

Progression stops when you re-build the cafe, but you can keep playing, sailing around, running quests, and doing some simple gardening. Your progress rolls over into Early Access too, so you don't have to worry about losing your townies, clothes, structures, etc.

For all my designs I've got a free key, but it's gonna be launching somewhere in the 20 - 30 USD price range. I can't recommend the demo enough, but even just wishlisting it on Steam boosts their metrics and gets them in front of more people!

“Oh, no, this is the revenge tour!” Lol, are these revenge tours going to be like her rebrands? We get one at least once a year but nothing really comes of it.

Well, judging by the pace of 2024, they're traveling on the same scale as the BRF pre-COVID: one "big" joint trip per quarter with a few solo trips sprinkled throughout the rest of the year.

Except the difference was that the BRF as a whole shared/rotated their travel so most people were only traveling long-haul once a year (excepting Charles, because, well, you know. He's Charles and lives to work). The Sussexes seem determined to do all of that themselves. And you know, maybe it'll work. Maybe they can do all that travel by themselves to compete with the BRF.

But I don't think it's sustainable. Here's their "official" travel so far for 2024:

January 2024: Jamaica for the Bob Marley biopic premiere (both)

February 2024: Canada for the 2025 Vancouver IG kickoff (both)

May 2024: England for the IG 10th anniversary service of thanksgiving (Harry)

May 2024: Nigeria fauxyal tour (both)

August 2024: Colombia fauxyal tour (both)

September 2024: New York City (Harry)

November 2024: ~rumored~ (to compete with Earthshot)

Not only are they not getting anything in return for these trips, but the attention and press coverage they get dwindles with each trip they take because there's less and less interest:

Only Sussex mouthpieces covered the January Jamaica trip.

If it weren't for Harry's last-minute flight to see Charles after his cancer diagnosis and the new Sussex website rollout, the February Canada trip wouldn't have gotten any attention (suggesting that the Sussexes are aware no one gives them any attention unless they make it worth their while, which they did by talking about the BRF again).

The May Nigeria trip got some coverage because it was their first "big" fauxyal tour, but if you notice, hardly no one covered the Colombia trip.

Now Harry's NYC trip will absolutely get coverage, but only because the press can sell a crapton of stories hyping up a potential brotherly reunion or a run-in in the next three weeks (even though I'm pretty sure William won't go).

But since the Sussexes do these trips for attention and to make money, and they're actually losing attention and losing money when they do these trips (because they have to invest more in PR and more in "pregame schemes"), this isn't a sustainable model for them.

But we'll see. Should be fun. Cringe, but fun.

“NHK WORLD – JAPAN MUSIC FESTIVAL” ~ Magia

Today is the broadcast day of "Japan Music Festival". The first broadcast was a couple of hours ago so fans of already uploaded some footage online. Find the performance of "Magia" HERE on Bilibili. YK's entire appearance can be watched HERE.

Yuki Kajiura performs a special medley, including the main theme of Kimetsu no Yaiba, and (!!!)Magia(!!!) [featuring Hikaru!], the theme song to Puella Magi Madoka Magica, along with SOUKYUU NO FANFARE, the 10th anniversary theme song for Sword Art Online featuring special guests ASCA and ReoNA.

The next live broadcast on the official website is about to start in 20 minutes so be sure to tune in. The video will also be available on demand (free) for a couple of months so it will be possible to watch it as many times as you like.

Thoughts: Waaaaahhhh, Magia sounded amazing. I am so HYPED!!! Wish it had been longer T_T The main theme of Kimtesu no Yaiba was also a nice treat, I love Keiko SO MUCH in that song.

Games Workshop's NOVA Open Preview - Should Have Been an Email and Now I'm Worried

If you've followed me for a while you might know that I started this blog following over from another blog nearly entirely dedicated to 40K. It was last summer, 10th Edition was coming out, there were almost daily teasers and releases, and I wanted to see if I could make any meaningful commentary on it. Then I heard that Tumblr wasn't as much of a hellhole as it had become after Verizon bought them. I had been following some Tumblr Homestuck blogs and decided it was time to give the site another chance.

Side note: It is an improvement, but not much of one.

While I stopped blogging daily about 40K, I did still cover a lot of their reveal shows. I loved 40K reveal shows! I loved the commentator banter, I loved the community interaction, I loved seeing all the new things coming, and they were useful for planning out purchases.

In case you didn't know, 40K is expensive. Having advanced notice helps.

But this year, 40K changed the reveal shows. Instead of a live stream on Twitch with community interaction, the shows were changed to pretty bland prerecorded videos that are nothing but marketing hype. In almost all cases it's better to just wait on the WarCom articles than to watch the reveals now. They aren't as long-winded, you get better images of the miniatures, and it's easier to skip to what you're actually interested in. From following people who attend these live, it's even worse. You're crammed in a room with other convention attendees, just to watch movie without any meaningful interaction.

This just really sucks! I really liked the old shows. As much as hype is a weapon corporations use against us, it's fun to get hyped for something! And when you can interact directly with people from a company like this, you feel like there's a chance to get questions answered and concerns voiced. This even happened during a few of the old reveals.

But this one is just beyond the pale! After revealing some cool new Chaos Dwarfs for Blood Bowl and the new Stormcast models that will be coming out, they moved to the other systems showcased in the preview articles.

And we got nothing.

While they presented what they claimed were roadmaps, there's basically nothing to them. Each roadmap uses more text talking about what's already been released than what's going to be released. The only concrete confirmed releases are as follows:

Warhammer 40,000: Guard, Aeldari, and Imperial Knights are coming out in 2025.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: We're getting a Death announcement SoonTM, new Spearheads for Orruks and Gitz, and supposedly something for all factions in 2025.

Warhammer The Old World: Empire and High Elves are slated for 2025.

Warhammer The Horus Heresy: Tanks! We're getting tanks, plural, in 2025! So that's at least two, possibly more, new tanks coming for the game!

Are you hyped yet?

Now, the chronologically attuned among you will notice that it is, in fact, still August. That's four whole months left of 2024. Now we have a new release and edition of Kill Team coming. We also have some previewed models that haven't been formally released yet. But even assuming that Death announcement happens before the end of the year, that's not a lot. In fact, the 40K road map specifically says, "With such a lot happening in 2024, it's time to take a breath, watch the balance, and enjoy the World Championship of Warhammer. Blood Angels end the year." While Blood Angels have not officially had their release yet, that release is imminent. That means there will be nothing 40K for 3 month.

I repeat, this road map says there are no unannounced new 40K releases in the lead up to Christmas.

So what's going on?

Let's talk about a potentially good explanation first. Games Workshop, like so many companies, saw amazing growth during the pandemic. But like all of those companies, that growth appears to have leveled off. Yeah, there are spikes in profits around new releases, especially 10th Edition, but nothing close to what they saw in 2020 or 2021. At the same time, they've been releasing new games, editions, and miniatures faster than ever before. But if they aren't bringing new customers in with these new releases, well existing customers are unlikely to want to spend even more money than they already are. And that's before we get to the blanket price increases that occurred over the last two years!

If the profits GW is seeing from new releases aren't in line with the production costs, GW might be reevaluating their release schedule. This is good new and bad news. The good news is that fans who enjoy multiple GW games and factions, like me, will have more time between releases we care about. More time to assemble, paint, and most importantly, save money. The bad news is that means some games might get left by the wayside. There are already worries that Warcry is dead. And that sucks because, in my opinion, Warcry is a better game than Kill Team.

But even if GW is going to be slowing down releases, I still can't imagine not having a faction release for their biggest game for Christmas.

So I have fears.

The most simple, and possible fear, is GW is starting to dial back on communication. This would be in line with the changes to many of their information formats, such as Warhammer Previews. This is bad. For almost a decade now, GW has been on that knife edge of being a largely neutral corporate entity. They're big enough and successful enough that they can do cool things that smaller businesses can't, all while treating their employees pretty well. But they're also big enough that their executives and investors are very obviously meddling.

And no, I'm not talking about female Custodes! That was a great decision that fits the lore and makes for a great way to expand the miniature line and community.

I'm talking about things like Warhammer+ and the negative focus it brought to fan content. I'm talking about the continued insistence on mandatory physical rule books in an age of digital media. And, of course, I'm talking about price increases and reduced model counts for already expensive products.

Up to this point, I personally felt the good and the bad have been balanced. But we've seen this kind of GW before. Before the old CEO was kicked out and Kevin Roundtree took over, GW was a silent and imposing edifice. Interactions with fans had dwindled to near nothing, and were often hostile. In many cases, kits and books were actually more expensive then than they are now, some even without inflation! It was during that time that I initially left Warhammer and didn't come back until the release of 8th Edition.

But I'm worried about something potentially worse too.

Even if GW is backsliding into old habits, and hostile investors and executives are having more sway, that still wouldn't explain not having 40K releases for Christmas! Even if we say, "Well maybe there's something going on that's delaying the release," that doesn't explain similar blank slates for their other games.

This much empty calendar in a lead up to Christmas screams reorganization. And since I don't see GW declaring Chapter 11 anytime soon, that leaves an unsettling possibility.

Buyout.

Amazon seems to have taken a keen interest in this relatively small British corporation. In addition to the planned Amazon Prime series and the short in the upcoming Next Level, there are rumors that Amazon is talking about a movie. But supposedly the Amazon Prime series stalled out in talks about the shows creative direction.

We all know what Amazon tends to do when they see a potential for profit but have a business partner they don't want to work with.

I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill here, but that should tell you how troubled I am by this Warhammer Preview. It really bothers me. I've honestly never seen anything like it since they started pushing Warhammer Community. And it really has me worried.

[ENG translation] Interview with Joker Out: “We could’ve never imagined that we would come to Poland twice for five concerts”.

Joker Out is a rock band coming from Slovenia. They represented their homeland during the 67th Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool. After several years of Slovenia's absence in the finals, they broke the country's bad streak and took 21st place in the grand final. The band is currently on their second tour in Europe and on the 10th of March there was a concert in Krakow. Before the scheduled performance, I had the pleasure of talking to the band about Eurovision, their latest single Everybody's Waiting and also about the group's upcoming third album.

Julia Maciąg: This is your fifth show in Poland. How excited are you to be here again? What do you think about Polish fans?

Bojan Cvjetićanin: We came back to Poland after probably five months which is crazy. We could never imagined that we would come to Poland twice for five concerts. It's also a very short period of time to see the amazing fans who are here again. It's a great honor.

JM: A year has passed since Eurovision 2023. How much has this competition changed your career?

Bojan: In the music aspect, the only thing that has changed in our career is that many new things influence us. These songs that we write about, some new situations that we would never have thought of before. In the other aspects, of course, the fact that we travel a lot - something we have never done before. The only concerts we played were outdoors in Slovenia for the Slovenian and Croatian fans. The possibility of travelling and singing in our native language when the fans from Europe are singing our songs in Slovenian is actually quite strange. In this way, our lives changed dramatically and changed us because now we live mainly out of suitcases.

JM: In the summer you are playing, not counting your Eurovision performance, quite a big concert in Budapest at the Sziget Festival. How excited are you for this show?

Kris Guštin: Actually this is a very good question because Sziget is for us a determinant of international success. Sziget is the biggest stage we could have dreamed, and we dreamed of it. I have no idea who will be playing this year, but probably some big artists. It will be a great honor for us to share this stage with someone of international fame.

Bojan: Ariana Grande.

JM: Actually Ariana is not planning a tour this year because she is promoting Wicked.

Bojan: Okay... not good.

JM: I'm sorry.

Nace Jordan: She will come next year! *laugh*

Bojan: I don't feel very good about this fact.

Kris: She will come next year. She should have known we would be performing there! *laugh*

JM: We will see. Back to the Eurovision. Bojan, you are one of the authors of "Veronika," Raiven's song. Did you have any expectations or ideas to make this song?

Bojan: Honestly, I didn't have any expectations. In fact, the song was recorded without me. It was like this, Raiven called me to meet her at her house because we are very good friends. When we were spending time together, she showed me her music and I felt that I must play on the guitar and maybe something could be added to this song. I showed it to her and she really liked it immediately. She recorded this song again with the producer and that's it. My part in this song is really about 0.1 percent.

JM: Have you had a chance to listen to other Eurovision proposals?

Bojan: We were listening to some songs together, but honestly I don't remember any. However, I remember the Croatian song beacuse Jure sings it 24/7. *laugh*

JM: So you haven't listened to the Polish proposal, The Tower by LUNA?

Bojan: No. Actually I really like to watch the Eurovision when it actually takes place in May. I don't want to be a part of the hype we have to go through for Eurovision.

JM: In February, you released your song Everybody's Waiting. What is this song about?

Bojan: It's a song about an internal struggle. Maybe a feeling of anxiety, discomfort in your own skin because everything is happening around you and you live with the feeling that you have to be ready to be smiling 24/7 and always give your best, and never be able to give up and be able to say "no" to something.

JM: If I can add something from myself, I think this song gives fans a bit of hope. And the vibe is a bit rocky, a bit ballad, but this song is very catchy. Besides, she is very beautiful.

Bojan: Thank you very much.

JM: Additionally, there is also a music video and in it we see a man spinning around candles. What do the man and the candles symbolize in this clip?

Bojan: We wanted to find the person who would represent each of us. To be in this world, someone who is in his own house, only with his own thoughts. He simply finds himself by relaxing through music. Candles represent a sense of fulfillment, happiness and joy. So he basically enters this room through song with our help, because we are such "ghosts" in this clip. Gradually, he discovers himself and turns on his light. In the end, he wins all the candles through the song. However, it also in some way symbolizes people lighting our candles and at the same time us lighting theirs.

JM: During your gigs, fans could hear your new songs. Will you perform any during the concert in Krakow?

Bojan: *asks Jan* Will we perform any new songs during the concert in Krakow?

Jan Peteh: Of course! Today we will be playing two songs.

JM: And what are their titles?

Jan: They are called "Šta bih ja" and "Bluza".

JM: Ooo Bluza is also in Polish.

Bojan: It sounds the same in our languages. In fact, the text doesn't contain the word "bluza" at all. It is described as a blues rhythm, but it is written as a bluza, and that is what it stuck with.

JM: Very clever. As we know, you recorded your album in London. Why did you choose this city to work?

Bojan: We needed to lose our money in two months. *laugh*

JM: And that's why you did it in London? *laugh*

Bojan: No. *laugh* In fact, we were in London to try and write the album. Ultimately we didn't write the entire album, we just spent a lot of money. *laugh*

JM: Oh gosh. And when can we expect the album?

Bojan: If I'm right, it's the beginning of October.

JM: Ahhh. However, I would prefer 25th of October. *laugh*

Bojan: Because you have a birthday then?

JM: Yes.

Bojan: I think it will be sooner, but we will think about it. *laugh*

JM: I hope. *laugh* Let's talk about your campaign aimed to musicans from other countries in Europe. Why did you decide to do this during your tour?

Nace: It's hard for me to answer this question because I was the last one to join the band. But when you like a band you dream of opening a concert for someone bigger than yourself or having a concert with them. So we wanted to give other young bands a chance to open up to us with their music.

JM: The band Heima will play for you in Krakow. Why did you make this choice?

Nace: We had this online competition and the fans decided to participate, so we chose them.

JM: Have you had a chance to listen to their material?

Nace: We definitely listened to and watched their competition video together.

Kris: I listened to them during the rehearsal!

Bojan: We tried our best. We once had a music competition in Slovenia for school bands, so we tried to follow the same model and achieved something similar. This was the easiest and most objective solution for us.

JM: Do you have any expectations for today's concert?

Kris: Polska gurom! *laugh*

Bojan: Have the best party of our lives in Krakow!

JM: So finally, I would like to praise myself about the one sentence that I learned in Slovenian. Hvala lepa za intervju! (Thank you very much for the interview!)

Megaman Battle Network but I went back in time and moved a chair (headcanons/musings under the cut)

Everything else is the same but Lan was the one who had HBD, died, and was brought back by Dr. Hikari as Megaman.EXE (anything relating to this concept will be tagged "MegaLan AU" but otherwise he's called Megaman.EXE here)

Hub is a humble, polite, and diligent 5th grader. Greatly admires his dad and wants to work in navi development just like him, but is still a mama's boy. He always goes to bed, wakes up, and gets to school on time. He studies just enough to maintain decent grades, does all his chores, and gets around by skateboarding. Hub has a pretty happy and peaceful life, but something feels...missing. His dad's long work hours and mom's fussing have led him to feel somewhat sheltered and lacking in excitement, and his parents have noticed. So, for Hub's 10th birthday, Dr. Hikari surprised his son with his own custom netnavi: Megaman.EXE.

"Why did Dad name you 'Megaman'?" "Because I'm mega cool! 👉😎👉" [Or if you prefer the Japanese names: "Why did Dad name you 'Rockman'?" "Because I rock! 👉😎👉"]

This Megaman is very cocky and proud of his skills, but not to the point of delusion (he is not immune to fucking around and finding out lmao). It's more a case of him hyping himself up because A) he can do things as a navi that he could never do as a human, and B) he got a second chance at life and wants to live it to the fullest. He hates that he's separated from his family and the rest of the world by a screen, but he's still really happy that he got to know his twin brother at all. Someone's gotta drag Hub out of the classroom to see all the exciting things the world has to offer!!!

Unlike Hub with school and chores, this Megaman has to be prodded into doing navi tasks like file cleanup, software maintainance, etc. He's also not the most reliable alarm clock lmao

This Megaman has a bad habit of leaving the joke program running in the background. Hub keeps turning it off and even tried deleting it but somehow Megaman still has it running most of the time (he knows when to dial it back tho)

Despite slacking on most other navi tasks, this Megaman is still without a doubt very powerful, excels at netbattling, and is very eager to tackle net crimes (he begged Hub to jack him into the oven when it caught fire). He also loves to tease opponents, he keeps it lighthearted when battling friendly navis like Roll or Gutsman but can get pretty sassy against enemies. It's not smart, especially where Bass is concerned, but then again this is still Lan we're talking about. And SPEAKING OF

There were more than a few times where he almost gave away his real identity, whether it be because he made a comment about craving curry or called Hub "big bro" without thinking and tried to laugh it off ("It's because we're so close and you act all responsible and stuffy like an older brother!! No other reason hAHAHAHA ;;")

Once Dr. Hikari gives Hub "Lan.BAT" to save Megaman from deletion and tells him the truth, Hub is definitely still surprised but not as much as he could be ("Man, Hub, you're taking this whole 'dead twin reborn as a navi' thing pretty casually..." "You weren't exactly subtle about it, little bro.")

During the big climax in BN5, Megaman-channeling-the-spirit-of-Lan is mostly serious and focused, but he still can't help but be like "Heh, I look SO cool right now!!" and then the second the powerup wears off he crumples to the ground like he has glass bones and paper skin but it was SO worth it

Megaman is the only one who takes the rivalry with Chaud and Protoman seriously; poor Hub just wants to be friends and not cause problems but alas his navi got the Shounen Protagonist ADHD

Since the dynamic is flipped around, Maylu and Roll don't have the same feelings for the boys that they normally would, Maylu might've had a crush on Hub when they were little but she got over it (also: my house, my aroace Hub)

Also just in general, because he was a little more sheltered than canon Lan, Hub didn't have many friends for most of his life. He still grew up with Maylu as his next-door neighbor and childhood friend, but they weren't as close as Maylu and Lan. Hub avoided Dex b/c he saw Dex as a bully and wanted to stay as far from trouble as possible, and Yai he just didn't interact with due to shyness. But once Megaman entered the picture, Hub became much more social and outgoing. He became closer to Maylu, befriended Dex and Yai, and actively wants to befriend Chaud because he sees that same sense of loneliness in Chaud.
