𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗘𝗫𝗔𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘... . I have 2 different examples for you here. My 2 older girls have learned that life doesnt always go as planned. Life is NOT all rainbows and butterflies. We fall and get back up! . They have both grown up to be mature beautiful ladies that I am proud of and know that they have a good head on their shoulders and that I have taught them that life is just not easy. Sometimes we have to make adjustments to life. . With the little one, she came into a different time in life. Shes been involved in my fitness world since day 1 and has really taken into being athletic and all healthy but has also seen how hard we work at what we do. Just because mommies are home doesnt mean we dont work. . My point here is that kids watch your every move. They feed off of you. So how YOU feel they will feel. You need to make sure that YOU yourself is always in a good place in order for them to feel like they are in a good place. So they know how to handle situations when they are confronted with them. Hold their hands but mainly guide them! . #livelife #iam1stphorm #neversettle #legionofboom #1stphorm #youvsyou #nomoreexcuses #yesyoucan #challenge #kids #leadbyexample #guidethem #teachkids #lifestyle #momsthatlift #daughters #busymom #momlife #parents #parenting https://www.instagram.com/p/B2goHWJjPfD/?igshid=by6a44k9jd7o

Minimizing our life
Tumblr media
As a family of 5 we have too much stuff! Honestly, our closets are overflowing, our toy bins are stuffed full, our book shelves crammed to the brink of collapse. Every thing is a mess all the time. There is never enough storage space and it feels like all we do is clean up! Do you feel this way? Over the last few months Brian and I have been working really hard to clear up some of this. We have been selling, donating, trashing and purging like crazy. It has been interesting because one of us is a bit of a pack rat and the other has a deep love for clothes in all sizes (just in case) and can't say no to free things, no matter if they are needed or not. But, we are coming together on this and it is becoming much easier to let go.Overall we have been just trying to cut down on the amount of stuff we don't really need or use. How many crockpots do I really need? Right now I have three plus the three in one - small dip size crockpot. Really? Do I need all that? I have not been able to part with those just yet, but I think about it all the time. We have cut way back on random things around the house. We have donated and sold clothes and toys. We have reached out to people to see if things are needed with family members. We still have so far to go but already feel a simpler vibe in our home. The clutter is disappearing and the constant need to clean is changing to an easy pick up, most days. With three kids and a decent age gap between the second and third, we have a lot of kid things around the house. Our boys have a lot different wants and needs than our little girl. We can't get rid of everything, of course, but we can reduce some of what is just laying around not being used. Something I have noticed in my 12 years of being a mom, is that my kids respond to my emotions, they are aware of their surroundings and their behavior changes based on those two factors. What are the adults feeling and what is the space I am in like. When I think about it, I am much the same. I do not thrive in chaos, I do not do well when there is stress and anxiety and I am at my calmest when things are put together and those I surround myself are relaxed and at ease. My kids are the same. Clutter seriously increases our stress levels. As a family, we talk a lot about being grateful for what we have, appreciating our possessions and understanding how fortunate we are to have what we do. Our conversations are often set around different cultures around the world and what differences there are between our lives and so many others. We talk about the rich, the poor and those that live somewhere in between.Together, we are attempting to find a simpler, more calming environment in our humble abode. We all seem to be enjoying the change and have been thinking of what else we can purge. We have decided not to make quite a few purchases over the last few months simply because we have set an intention of reducing our consumerism.Society as a whole tends to buy way more than is needed. I often wonder if it is just because a commercial tells us we need it and then it is stuck in our minds, so we buy it. Advertising companies have people pretty well figured out and it is amazing what they can get us to buy. Hopefully, in this process we will teach our children to be more aware consumers. My thought is they will learn to be more selective in their purchases and that they will think more about how to spend their money.  It seems like a bit of a disservice to our kids though, the over buying. What are they actually learning from having so much? It seems there are things they learn and things they don’t learn. Do they need to learn to share if they have so much to choose from? Do they learn to appreciate? Do they learn to never be satisfied? Do they learn to use their imagination? Creativity is stimulated when you don’t have exactly what you need, right? When there are a few less things around, it is much easier for our little ones to help clean up. It is not overwhelming and there is a sense of accomplishment when they are able to do some of the work. Never underestimate how overwhelming it can be for your kids to clean up in an over consuming home. Think about how overwhelming it is for you!I really don’t think we will ever become hard core minimalists. But, we are certainly changing our habits and reducing our need to over indulge. I hope we are teaching our children to make sound decisions before making purchases and that they learn the difference between needs and wants. So far, it has been an interesting, productive and satisfying change in our lifestyle. I look forward to seeing where it takes us as a family! What about you, do you ever feel the need to stop being a heavy consumer? Do the commercials get you to buy things you don’t need? Have you started a similar journey or do you think you might in the future?  Read the full article

Did you know? As a boy, George Carver visited a neighbors house and saw beautiful paintings hanging on the walls and immediately desired to be able to paint as well. Without any money for brushes, paints or paper, he made his paints from berries, roots, and flowers. He used boards and bark rather than paper. We’re making paints and stains from flower petals and eggplant peelings. The flowers were a part of birthday bouquets that are being repurposed. Once the petals were collected, hot water was added. The jars will sit overnight. Tomorrow we will follow these steps, “Add 2-3 drops of vinegar and a pinch of salt. Salt helps to "fix" or increase the "fastness" of the colours, so does the vinegar which also improves reds and purples. You can also add a strong alcohol in proportions of 1 part alcohol to 4 parts ink.” Next, “Using a sieve, strain the liquid into the jar and the ink is ready to use. Use lightweight watercolour paper to paint on.” If you do this at home let us know how your natural paints and stains turn out. Enjoy a walk outside looking for plants that can be used to make your paints. Make sure you have permission if the plants are not yours. Parents, let’s us know if you need any help with STEM or STEAM related lessons, projects or activities for your children. Our farm reaches out to schools (homeschool, public and private), programs and churches to teach about history, life science, and other subjects. Holler if you need us! #georgewashingtoncarver #art #artist #stemeducation #steameducation #paint #painting #nature #plants #environment #repurposed #education #teachkids #teachersofinstagram #adventurer #observationalpainting #gatherer #creation #explore #outside #outsideisfree #farmlife #farmersofcolor #farming #creative #makersgonnamake #frugal #homeschool #homeschooling #4hgrowshere (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CESDMkiFX4B/?igshid=56vhy5lnfxl6

I have been applauded for my behavior management and ability to deescalate some of the craziest situations . The credit goes to the friends I attended schools in low income neighborhoods with. I was friends with kids like my students and I knew their stories. I knew that behind every behavior there’s a story. I’ve also seen the long term effect of rewarding them with detention , suspension, and alternative school. Let’s switch it up and try a trip to the counselor’s office to unpack the domestic violence, verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, that actually caused the frustration that caused the behaviors. My classmates and some of my “behaviorally challenged” students taught me if you want a different result use a different technique. So I listen instead of screaming , I look for positives during some of the most negative situations, I ask questions before giving directives. I learned all of this not from college but from those that most write up and write off. I love being a product of my environment!!! #schooltoprisonpipeline #productofmyenvironment #educated #counselors #blackeducators #school #schoolcounselor #teachermom #teacherquotes #maxineclark #teachkids #messengerkids https://www.instagram.com/p/B3cEiDgBGVL/?igshid=13akt0wkft9k6
