Nothing is more disappointing than clicking on a fic for your OTP and it turns out to have what I call OC Stand-In Syndrome, wherein Character A and Character B have had their backgrounds, personalities and motivations changed alongside plopping them in an AU setting to the point where their names are just about the only thing tying them to who they were originally.

To use an example from a fandom I am not in now but saw a lot of this in when I was, take literally any MCU ship. Stony, but Tony and Steve are in the 1950s and Tony is a shy emotionally damaged Omega uwu and Steve is just a nice guy but not the badass who canonically would fight you for more or less any injustice you committed in front of him. Were their names changed to Antonio and Stefan, you would not recognize that they were supposed to be Tony Stark and Steve Rogers at all. Or it's Stucky, but it's a modern day AU and Bucky is a banker who falls for barista Steve and neither have any personality traits in common with their original namesakes outside of being I guess nice and arguably friendly with each other, though of course in addition to their childhood friendship being erased, so has their poverty, plopping them both into comfortable middle class backgrounds often with supportive living families, making them unrecognizable as far as origins go. Clintasha but Clint is a CEO of a company and Nat is a secretary with no dark backstory and they've never met until one day their soul marks activate and they go on a series of dates where they reveal personalities, backstories, interests and desires that do not match canon Clint and Nat to the point where you don't know why these two were chosen as the named characters.

If you want to write original fiction, by all means, go for it. Write your 1950's A/B/O M/M romance with an emotionally broken, shy uwu boy and his skinny sexy chivalrous Alpha. Write that coffee shop M/M middle-class-without-the-uncertainty thing. Write your busy workaholic cutesy secretary who fate has wed to a CEO and aaaah she's so nervous aaah why is this so awkward. Those are things with audiences who will love them and were they not presented to me with the names of other characters on them, I might like them, too.

But when I go looking for A/B fic and I just find a fic with a character borrowing Character A's name and they're into a character borrowing Character B's name, my thought isn't, "Wow, what a great A/B fic!" it's "you must've accidentally used find-and-replace to put in the wrong names on your OCs".

I got out of Reylo for exactly this reason. I like Reylo. I don't like the latest Sad Girl OC with a different backstory and either much more wallflower or viciously snide personality (depending on what the author thinks is cute/cool) and Sad Boy OC who lacks the rage issues, familial issues and ongoing flaws that make Kylo interesting.

And now it's creeping into my latest fandom and I'm just so tired. Please, I just want to read fic of two characters, not two of your OCs who you haven't named yet.

Rey Johnson is the newest cub reporter working for Edward R Murrow in 1954 and the country grapples with Senator McCarthy and his Red Scare.  He’s Targeted people she loves and she is determined to uncover the truth.

Ben Solo has worked for Senator McCarthy for 5 years because he honestly believed the Russians were after everything good in America.  But now that McCarthy has started going after the Army, former Lt. Solo just isn’t sure anymore.

And that tantalizing cub reporter keeps trying to get an interview!

Why tf is harrymort something you ship? Not only is Voldemort constantly trying to kill Harry, has killed Harry's parents, threatened to kill all of Harry's friends, and actually did sort of kill Harry, but like. He's definitely over fifty in the books. IDK how old he is exactly, but he's old enough that he was a feared political cult leader missing 6 chunks of his soul and a Hogwarts graduate when Harry is a baby. It's creepy, man.

Bruh, all of my ships are incredibly problematic in more than one way. I'm suspicious over that being the only one you seem to take issue with.

1.) You lack imagination. HP is a very fleshed out fictional universe with many options at your fingertips for fanfic. Tom Riddle appears throughout the series, in the ages newborn, 11, 15, 16, 18, 20+, 30+, 50, and 70. Harry has appeared in the ages of 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 37/38. Time Turners exist. Alternate Universes exist. You can do literally anything because HP is a massive sandbox. I can have Harry find the Diary in his 6th Year and then he is actually older than Diary-Tom. I can have Adult-Harry Time Travel to any point between 1950 and 1970 and end up in a relationship with Adult-Tom.

2.) What attracts me is the potential. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean there aren't ridiculous connections between Harry and Voldy. People would see Voldy's obsession as some kind of mad crush if Harry was a girl and we all know it. Just because Harry's a boy doesn't mean Voldy getting touchy feely isn't weird, or Tom staring at him 'hungrily' many times isn't suggestive, or Harry remarking 18 times between 2 books that Tom Riddle is 'handsome' while doing nothing to tell people about how attractive the supposed love of his life(Ginny) is.

3.) My weakness is Protag/Antag ships. Ever since I was a child and a romance was happening in something I was watching, my first thought was always preferring the hero with the villain. I didn't understand why until I was about 13. Suddenly it's, how would that work? How can they realistically go from being enemies to being in love? Can any fic writers manage it since it isn't canon?

Bruh, I shipped Sailor Moon with almost every enemy she had(even Diamond tbh). I shipped Kagome Higurashi with Naraku and Sesshomaru from the moment those characters were introduced in the story(Inuyasha). Long before we learned any back story on them. I shipped Naruto with almost every member of the Akatsuki at some point out of curiosity the moment I learned about the organization. I shipped Kaname Kuran and Zero Kiryu(Vampire Knight).

As a result of my Protag/Antag obsession, most of my ships end up being unhealthy by nature. Even in cases where they are undeniably canon, like Luo Binghe/Shen Qingqiu | Shen Yuan, they aren't very safe or sane.

Something you need to remember is that it is fiction about fictional characters. Real people are not being harmed. And the only way someone could realistically be 'triggered' by such content is if they go to specific lengths to see it. You have options to curate your online experience. Don't follow blogs/accounts about topics you don't like, mute words/tags that bother you, block ppl who make you uncomfortable. It takes a few minutes to ensure your future is hassle free.

I'm at that age where I've been in fandom spaces so long I don't care about people's ships or interests. Spending my personal time worrying about some stranger's obsession with Tragic Non-Con Reylo fanfic won't do me any favors when I honestly dgaf. I'm here for the fandom stuff I like and only occasionally participate in discourse, and that is never aimed at ships and is always about characters and the people who wrote them.

So yes, I ship fucked up shit, and I could write the fucked up stuff(maybe, if I ever get emotional strength to) but typically I'm more into nuance and drama and slow burns that take 400K words to work through. I don't do Non-Con Triggering horrible stuff because mentally I can't handle writing or reading it very much. But I'm also not up in arms over the people who do. Let people like what they like. Ship and let ship. Live and let live. They're pixels on a screen or words on a page. They don't exist. They aren't real. They are meant to entertain us, and how people find their enjoyment in fiction isn't for anyone to decide.

Oh boy...

I don't feel like writing a lengthy counter-essay of my own. This Reylo-anti's long-ass post can be cut up into four, simple points – let's address those instead:

• Reylo is toxic/abusive.

• Fiction affects reality.

• Shipping Reylo is akin to "validating real-life abuse."

• Bwaaa! Stop supporting Reylo!

1. I don't care whether Reylo is abusive or not. It's a fictional relationship.

Just because shippers enjoy and romanticize it, doesn't mean they're gonna develop feelings for a man who would kidnap them and hurt their friends in real life, no matter how pretty he may be.

The "romanticization = normalization" accusation that gets thrown at Reylo fans is BS as well:

Shippers aren't hurting anyone for merely enjoying Reylo, period.

2. A common anti fallacy, that one. Most of us know fiction affects reality to a degree.

It can reinforce beliefs you already hold, manipulate an audience's emotions, lighten your mood, etc, but at the end of the day, fiction reflects society and its flaws more than anything else.

Let's take a look at the Jaws argument; antis' go-to "gotcha."

What they've failed to mention is that the movie was an adaptation of a novel based on the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, an actual event which soured the public perception of sharks well before Jaws hit theaters. Panic-stricken people led shark hunts and started depicting them as threats in media following the attacks.

Thus, Jaws only reflected pre-existent misconceptions about sharks. The film did not create them out of thin air, nor inject erronous ideas into people's heads a la the debunked Hypodermic Needle Theory antis invoke during these fiction vs. reality discussions. Blame society, bruh.

Herein lies the most glaring flaw in their "monkey see, monkey do" approach to media criticism: Media audiences have prior knowledge to compare with the media messages they receive.

Basically, fiction can't alter your personal beliefs on its own because you can compare new ideas to all the ones you've encountered previously throughout your entire life.

We're not passive viewers, antis. We decide how we interpret media based on our numerous experiences.

And don't even bring up "b-but, repeated exposure!" as your counterpoint to mine. Kids haven't turned violent despite playing first-person shooter video games time after time. Comic books certainly weren't responsible for juvenile delinquency during the 1950s. Why would the same BS logic hold true for shipping?

Furthermore, fiction can't "normalize" what we already frown upon irl. Again, I'm certain most people don't find the idea of dating a torturer/kidnapper appealing outside of fiction.

3. Scapegoating Reylo over real-life abuse takes the responsibility away from actual abusers. I sincerely hope you're aware of this, antis.

Honestly Reylo sounds like some crap from the 1950s: White people don’t want to ship the white woman with her black best friend so they ship the abusive white NeoNazi with her instead, even though said NeoNazi is an unapologetic genocidal fascist who rejects redemption twice and only decides to repent at the last minute when it becomes convenient for him, and for whatever reason the girl continues to love him despite his multiple attempts to murder her.
