Opinion | Celebs who picked Tory Lanez over Megan Thee Stallion need a reckoning, too
More than seven months after hip-hop recording artist Tory Lanez was convicted in the 2020 shooting of hip-hop megastar and three-time Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion, a judge sentenced him Tuesday to 10 years in prison. In December, a Los Angeles jury found the Canadian-born Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, guilty of three felony counts: assault with a semiautomatic handgun, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
T he 10 years Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford gave Lanez Tuesday was less than the 13 years requested by prosecutors.
On Monday, the first day of Lanez's sentencing hearing, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta read into the record a statement from Megan: “Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,” she wrote. She also wrote, “Slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.” Megan testified during Lanez's trial but said in her statement that she eventually decided not to appear at the sentencing because she “simply could not bring myself to be in a room with Tory again.”
The 10-year sentence is an appropriate one. It sends a message that you can’t harm someone and not be held accountable. This is his Lanez's own doing, and now he will have about a decade to reckon with that.
Lanez’s sentencing is the latest development in one of the most contentious periods in hip-hop history, when many of the most notable men in the genre chose to rally around a fellow male artist accused of violence and not a fellow female artist who said she’d been shot by him.
What does it mean for Black women fans of hip-hop that, at the same time the 50th anniversary of the art form is being celebrated, one of hip-hop’s biggest stars continues to see hip-hop’s biggest influencers rally around her assailant, put her on virtual trial and find her guilty?
As a Black woman who remembers sneaking into my cousins David and Eric’s room as a kid to learn the lyrics to “It Takes Two” by Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock, I find it difficult to celebrate this golden anniversary. Because even though it’s turning 50, hip-hop doesn’t seem to have matured.
In his song “Circo Loco,” a collaboration with fellow rapper 21 Savage, Drake called Megan a liar. “This b---- lie about getting shot but she still a stallion … she don’t even get the joke but she still smiling,” Lanez’s fellow Canadian rapper sings. Drake was one of several prominent men in hip hop who accused her of lying. Hip-hop podcasters and bloggers, including Joe Budden and DJ Akademiks, used their large platforms to vilify her. (Budden later apologized for joking about Megan’s mental health as he doubted her claims of being shot by Lanez.)
Future NBA Hall of Famer LeBron James went out of his way to let us to know he’s Team Lanez. Responding to a tweet that claimed Lanez makes good music, James responded, “FACTS!!! He never misses. That boy talented as hell man! Bangers for days!!”
Akademiks and Megan engaged in a heated exchange on social media. Before a scheduled pre-trial court hearing even began, Akademiks falsely claimed on Twitter that there’d been a bombshell revelation that exonerated Lanez. Megan tagged him when she responded on Instagram, “Y’all tryna win a social media campaign this is MY REAL LIFE! Y’all tryna get retweets SPREADING FALSE NARRATIVES!” As recently as last month, Akademiks said he still has his doubts that Lanez is guilty.
Black women are three times more likely than other women to be killed by current or former partners. Even if Black people don’t know that exact statistic, they likely know of Black women who’ve been hurt or killed by their partners. That’s why I never bought the idea that the hip-hop community believed Megan was lying about what she said happened to her at the hands of someone with whom she’d been intimate with.

I figured the hip-hop artists dogging Meg knew she was telling the truth but succumbed to what can be an overwhelming sentiment that we must protect and defend Black men at all costs: even when Black women and Black children are the victims. I mean, isn’t that why so many refuse to stop supporting R. Kelly?
In my lifetime, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Black people overwhelmingly stand with Black women victims when their assailants are Black men. And that makes me sad.
That idea that protecting abusive men is more important than protecting or defending the abused makes it harder sometimes to rock to the beat. Because this isn’t hip-hop’s first account of intimate partner violence or men in hip-hop attacking women in general. There were stories in its earlier years — such as Dr. Dre’s 1991 assault of Dee Barnes, a journalist whose only crime was being a Black woman who was good at her job. According to media reports, Dr. Dre assaulted Barnes because she’d previously interviewed former NWA member Ice Cube and, in his segment, Cube had less than flattering remarks for his former bandmates. Instead of addressing Cube, Dre took his frustrations out on Barnes. Dr. Dre pleaded no contest to attacking Barnes and was given two years probation and some community service. “It ain’t no big thing. I just threw her through a door,” Dr. Dre said of Barnes then in an interview with Rolling Stone.
In 2015, the film “Straight Outta Compton” was rightly criticized for leaving out Dr. Dre’s attack on Barnes and the allegations of abuse from R&B singer Tairrie B and Dr. Dre’s former girlfriend, R&B singer Michel’le. That’s when Dr. Dre finally paid lip service to owning up to what he’d done. In a statement to The New York Times that year, he blamed alcoholism and said, “I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
Such an apology was too little and almost a quarter-century too late. That’s why it was such an offense that in February, to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, the Grammys honored Dr. Dre by presenting him its inaugural Global Impact Award. Not only that, the Grammys named that award for him. Barnes couldn’t believe it. She told Rolling Stone, “You might as well call it the Ike Turner Award.” She added, “I’m not the bad guy, but I am made into the villain — very much like how they did Megan Thee Stallion … I watched what happened to my little sister Megan, and it just was heartbreaking to me because we have not changed in all these years.”
L anez being sentenced at the same time as the genre’s golden anniversary is fitting. Instead of seeing his violence against a woman as a stain on the record or a blip on the radar, let us view Lanez’s attack on Megan and hip-hop’s support of him as yet another notch in hip-hop’s belt. This is what it wants to be.
Women have left an indelible mark on hip-hop. We should salute and applaud them. But we should also recognize that they’ve achieved what they have despite the sexist and patriarchal environments they’ve been in, environments that have so often been indifferent, if not openly hostile to their success, their safety and their survival.
What is hip-hop’s community going to do as it begins its next 50 years to ensure that women will be valued? What are the genre’s influencers going to do to change a culture in which abusers aren’t just protected but are too often celebrated?
Through its silence on behalf of those who’ve been abused and its open affirmation of abusers, hip-hop makes it clear that, to borrow from an infamous bar in Jay Z’s song “30 Something,” they don’t respect the ones who got shot; they respect the shooters.
I can still recite “It Takes Two” word-for-word. I still have fond memories of how hip-hop shaped my youth and young adulthood, but I don’t see the world with the idyllic eyes of a child anymore.
There are very few spaces where Black women are safe, and the horrible response to Lanez shooting Meg is proof that hip-hop, in all this time, still isn’t one of them.
This post is part of MSNBC’s “Hip-Hop Is Universal” series, which celebrates the genre’s 50th anniversary and examines its future.
This is why I’m still outraged for meg it could have been any other black woman, I never felt more unsafe. Fuck everyone who has no respect for black women and doesn’t protect them.
I don’t care if these famous people who stood by that sociopath have either apologized or kept their distance nor them being legendary their meat sucking a degenerate is their legacy . Fuck them for this for life, stand in your discomfort, if you don’t like being called out on this. You were a bunch of meat sucking sluts and I’m shaming you and at the same time demanding you to do better. Stand in it!

Misogynoir Did Tory Lanez’ Dirty Work During His Trial
BY KENYATTA VICTORIAPOSTED ON DECEMBER 28, 2022
Tory Lanez’s trial following the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion uncovered the rampant misogynoir in the hip-hop community.
On Friday, December 23, Tory Lanez was found guilty on all three charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm, and negligent discharge of a firearm, following his 2020 shooting Megan Thee Stallion. The rap artist, legal Megan Pete, first declared Lanez as her shooter on Instagram live during the summer of 2020. She testified during the trial, saying Lanez fired a gun at her feet while shouting “dance b-tch” after a party in California.
The shooting incident created a massive conversation, but more specifically, pointed out the misogynoir that runs deeply in hip-hop and its online communities. Misogynoir is misogyny aimed toward Black women, so race and gender both play a part.
Read ‘The Treatment of Megan Thee Stallion Further Exposes Society’s Hatred of Black Women.’
During Pete’s testimony, she revealed the damage the incident had done to her mentally and emotionally. “I wish he would have just shot and killed me [rather than] have to go through this torture,” she told the jury. The digital harassment that Megan endured came from various sources, including fellow rappers making fun of the traumatic incident and hip-hop blogs and commentators spreading false information about the situation and the trial.
“It feels like every man that’s in a position of power in the music industry, even people who are not even rappers, they never cared about what my side of the story was. They immediately took the side of this man and have been giving me hell for the last going on three years,” Megan testified.
During the trial, rap artists such as Joe Budden and 50 Cent (who have been accused of domestic abuse and charged with domestic violence, respectively) shared their thoughts on Pete. This fueled countless comments from outsiders who gave their opinions on the shooting. Since 2020, countless memes, conspiracy theories and hateful commentary about Megan became common on social media, proving why less Black women decide not to come forward about abuse than their white counterparts. The gaslighting and hate that follows their openness becomes too much to bear.
For Gabby Bulgarelli, senior producer on NPR’s podcast “Louder Than a Riot,” reporting on the trial and seeing the immense amount of false information showed that the hip-hop community does not value Black women.
“The [m]isinformation that has been reverberating around the internet during this trial is really dangerous because a lot of it is steeped in misogynoir, Bulgarelli told GU. “We have repeatedly seen unreliable sources push narratives aimed at delegitimizing the victimhood of the Black women in this trial [Megan and Kelsey] and reinforcing the power and protection of the Black man who is now the convicted aggressor [Tory]. These narratives have consistently — and could continue to — lead to violence and harm against Black women most notably the rampant cyberbullying both women faced.”
Tigidankay “TK” Saccoh uses her platform to combat the misogynoir of the trial as much as she can through her Instagram account Darkest Hue. “It was important for me to debunk the claims going around during this trial because there are so many blogs doing the exact opposite,” Saccoh said. “There were so many blogs vilifying Megan for her sex life and portraying her as a liar and a bad person.”
Some of these blogs and commentators shared false information without fact-checking, which led to thousands of people sharing the posts. Platforms such as RaphouseTV, No Jumper and Say Cheese has had to clarify their tweets due to them being factually incorrect.
Even now that the jury reached a verdict for the Tory Lanez trial, Say Cheese!, a YouTube account with a hefty following across the video platform, Twitter and Instagram, has shared a petition created by Tory Lanez’s supporters. Lanez’s fans are looking to appeal the ruling and the petition has received over 40,000 signatures.
“Under the comments, supporters of the petition are misgendering Megan Thee Stallion, accusing her of lying, and calling her misogynistic slurs,” Saccoh says. “A blog like Say Cheese would never share a petition supporting a cop who shot a Black man. These blogs enthusiastically wield misogynoir to pander to their pro-Black man, but anti-Black woman audience members.”
Kat Tenbarge, a tech and culture reporter at NBC News, found through her coverage of the trial that the desire for virality online has grown to a dangerous place. Spreading misinformation is viewed as just one way to grow acclaim.
“We’re seeing more and more misinformation play into the public understanding of legal cases, especially ones that involve celebrities,” Tenbarge told GU. “Social media is partially to blame, because blogs will adhere to popular opinions regardless of fact in order to go viral and make money. They are essentially incentivized to spread misinformation to succeed on these platforms. This puts the onus on the people being defamed or being hurt to take action because social media platforms don’t take responsibility for misinformation spread by users.”
Tory Lanez’ trial amplified the necessity of Black women having allies when they are vocal about violence. The trial also made it obvious why women are fearful of speaking about their experiences, as an army of misogynorists waits to tear them down. Now that the trial has reached a verdict, it’s time for more accountability and advocacy for Black women. Our lives are at stake.

GU Jams: Ar’mon Warren Is Preparing for Bigger and Better In 2023
BY KENYATTA VICTORIAPOSTED ON DECEMBER 27, 2022
The R&B singer credits real-life experiences to motivation in music.
For Ar’mon Warren, music fell into his lap way before YouTube. He began singing at three years old and playing the piano and drums with his little brother Trey. Church laid the foundation for his passion for the technical side of music, like the importance of tone and the difference between sopranos, altos and tenors.
In his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, he reflected on the limited opportunities for music and decided to take matters into his own hands. Back then, iPhones were expensive and out of reach, so Warren and his brother used to record and post content from a Samsung Galaxy until they finally convinced their mother to purchase an iPhone so they could post their content on Vine (yes, Vine).
Being in his teens, Warren had no clue that singing on the internet would catapult him into a long career and presence in the public eye where he could do what he truly loves: music. But his story does not end there. The 25-year-old has been in the YouTube game for about 10 years, becoming a veteran, and his new chapter has begun.
He also became a father to his daughter Legacy, preparing him to fully branch out as an independent artist. “We’re doing our solo thing right now,” Warren told GU. “Different moments in our [lives] led us to write songs that we feel are personal.”
Through those personal experiences, the genre that keeps him motivated to tell his story is R&B. Now, of course, there is a meaningful conversation surrounding the topic of the state of the genre. Still, Warren is definitely on the side of knowing it’s not dead, but it keeps him inspired.
“If you understand music, you could never get bored with R&B,” he said. “I love the production, how singers can put backgrounds [and] the way it’s melodic.”
He’s always open to everlasting learning, which encouraged him to make as much music as possible, leading him to score his first Billboard hit No. 11 for digital sales for his song “Hol’ It Down,” featuring his muse Reginae Carter.
While Warren was in the studio creating music, his producer Dwayne “D2” Washington, knew he found the right song for him. “He called me and was like, ‘Yo, I think I got it, I think I got the one,” he said. At that moment, he realized that was the type of hands-on collaboration that kept him inspired and encouraged when creating new music.
Warren knew he wanted the song to start with Carter expressing her wants and needs within a relationship, “I need you to reciprocate the energy that I’m going to reciprocate, because if you don’t, then I’m gonna be mad all the time, ‘cause I’mma be like ‘dang I wanna do this for him,’”  she said in the song.
That intro leads to the rest of the song’s flow, sharing his perspective of how he will hold down his relationship. He reflected on how in the past, he was not inspired to get into the studio before. Still, once he started dating Carter, she brought that spark back into what he loved about making music: real-life experiences.
“She allowed me to be an artist,” Warren told GU. “She doesn’t push me to be anything but myself.”
Through his musical journey, he’s been able to find confidence in the work he puts into every melody and hook that prepped him for the music industry. “I feel like God put me through a developmental stage to where I know that I can’t just drop a song and think [that’s it],” he said.
Warren realizes now that it takes more, and with the work, a proper roll-out, and his fans’ massive support, anything is possible. “I challenged myself to be a better father, person and artist,” he said. Now he’s ready to be bigger and better.

Eminem:  A Year in Review, 2022
From turning half a century old, late in the year, to being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Eminem has had a stellar year.  The year 2022 was a busy time in the top-selling artist’s career.  He marked 20 years for 2 albums in his repertoire, The Eminem Show as well as the 8 Mile Soundtrack.  Celebrating both, two new anniversary albums were created & brought out with extra songs for them both including a handful of instrumentals on each.  There was also an album created for his many, many hits:  Curtain Call 2.  All three projects came with posts online offering clothing, collectibles & more. A lyric video for the great 2010’s Won’t Back Down, featuring Pink, was a highlight for some fans that have been enjoying the skills put into Eminem’s lyric videos that are included in Shady Records signed artists’ videos as well.  In part of the celebrations for Curtain Call 2, Eminem’s cover of the album was made into a mural in his hometown, Detroit, Michigan USA.
Further, Eminem was part of the all-star Hip-Hop halftime show at the 56th Superbowl which made history as the first ever all hip-hop/R&B line-up.  To celebrate the season Eminem gave us Shady Football that offered a clothing line to enjoy.  His restaurant, Mom’s Spaghetti Detroit celebrated big in New York as well as Los Angles & also hit their first year in business at a stationary location. As well, Marshall’s memorabilia shop, The Trailer, located above Mom’s Spaghetti in Detroit, had also been up & running for a year as of September 29th, 2022. As well, this year fans saw Marshall make it out to be a wonderful piece of the Detroit Lions Football club’s Hardknocks series on HBO Plus.  Eminem made his fans truly happy to see him sporting sunglasses & a smile at the event, showing the world he was full of quick wit & good humor.  In early Fall this year Eminem was XXL Magazine’s cover once again, but this time for their 25th Anniversary issue. Along with the cover Marshall gave us an incredible article & an equally incredible photo shoot.  It was an amazing year for the fans of Eminem, even without the “new” album some wanted so badly.
Getting in on the fun, Eminem took part of the B.A.Y.C’s (Bored Ape Yacht Club) spree that was running like wildfire during 2022.  Doing videos, making appearances & performing came from this venture in 2022 for Eminem.  To give fans an incredible look into the man behind the amazing art, Marshall & friends separately took a seat with PaulPod, a podcast that spanned weeks with manager Paul Rosenberg at the helm.   The Youtube’s 50 Million Subscribers Club, Minions, Elvis, Shazam, UFC & Spiderman all meant something to Eminem fans as he joined all of these aforementioned in this year, 2022.  Eminem took you to the cleaners, he took you to the trailer park.  He also gave us his early musical influences (over 100 listed) on Spotify & so much more – all for his fans.  What will 2023 have in store for our favorite superhero, Marshall B. Mathers III?  Only time will tell.  One thing I’ve learnt - you can’t rush an artist for their art, they must feel it so that you will, in turn, feel & experience it yourselves.  The saying goes:  All good things to those who wait.  2023 – here we come!  ~

Tumblr media
BTS Army and alternative K-pop fans, get ready to mark your calendars. Rapper RM from the K-pop group BTS is collaborating with up-and-coming alternative group Balming Tiger on the track “SEXY NUKIM.” On Wednesday, BTS's official Twitter account announced the collaboration. Immediately, fans began discussing what the song might sound like across social media platforms. Little information is known about the track, but based on the range of genres covered by both RM and Balming Tiger, listeners can expect an interesting blend of musical genres. SEXY NUKIM (feat. RM of BTS) - Balming Tiger 2022.09.01.#SEXYNUKIM #섹시느낌 #RM @balmingtiger pic.twitter.com/qjj9UYk6rl — BTS_official (@bts_bighit) August 24, 2022 RM's Hip-Hop Journey Like his other rapline counterparts, Suga and J-Hope, RM, birth name Kim Namjoon, is no stranger to hip-hop or success. His released his self-titled mixtape in 2015. The mixtape made Spin Magazine's “50 Best Hip Hop Albums of 2015.” RM shows homage to his influences on this mixtape as it contains samples from J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T, J. Dilla, and Run The Jewels.  For his second mixtape, he switched to a more lyrically introspective, lo-fi hip-hop sound with 2018's, mono. The project, met with positive reviews, peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard 200. Two years after its release, the album peaked at No. 1 on iTunes in 101 countries—a record only topped by BTS member, V. His other accomplishments include working with and receiving a seal of approval from rap icons Warren G and Wale. But BTS fans know Namjoon as a multifaceted artist inside and outside the studio. Last year, he became the youngest and second most credited artist in K-pop, according to the Korean Music Copyright Association. However, he is also well known in the art scene and was a featured guest on Intersections: The Art Basel Podcast. In addition to his “SEXY NUKIM” feature, the rapper's debut photography book Me, Myself, and RM: Entirety is set to come out later this year. The rapper has been teasing the photo book all month via Instagram. The Cross-Genre Appeal Of Balming Tiger Balming Tiger's music transcends genre. The group formed in 2018, and currently has 8 members. They are: rapper Omega Sapien, DJ Abyss, and singer-songwriters Mudd the Student, Wnjn, and Sogumm. Balming Tiger also has several directors including: San Yawn, Jan'Qui, and Lee Suho, and editor, Henson. In an interview with TMRW Magazine, Sogumm said they're more of an art collective than a standard band. Omega Sapien said the hype around Korean media helped grow their fan base. They may not be the biggest act in the world, but their unique approach to music and visuals continues to draw people in. Inspired by other Korean artists and collectives, Balming Tiger's approach to music matches RM's interest in hip-hop and art. Fans of both acts are sure to love the new song dropping next Thursday, September 1. Alternatives to Stream Hip Hop Music
While the rise of streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify have actually been mostly based upon music from the mainstream, there are many options readily available to listen to hip hop on the go. In this short article, we'll go over Tidal, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music as options to streaming services for hip hop. Each offers its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and we'll cover how each one differs from the others. Tidal If you are looking to stream hip hop music, you should think about Tidal. The streaming service is understood for its contemporary music, with a special concentrate on hip hop. You can listen to hip hop songs from a few of the greatest artists these days or discover up-and-comers who have yet to catch on. Users can browse through advised brochure albums or create their own custom playlists to listen to their preferred hip hop tunes.
The search is fast and trusted. Tidal has an extensive catalogue of hip hop music spanning over a decade, with each artist's profile tagging each title with its release year. You can also look for tracks by genre using the artist's name and album title. Tidal's contributors' playlists are consistently good, making it an exceptional discovery tool. Utilizing the credits feature to see more appropriate music helps you discover brand-new songs to listen to. Another positive feature of Tidal is the audio quality. The service's 50 million tracks are encoded in FLAC, a lossless format that streams at the equivalent of CD quality. While Apple Music and Spotify stream at 320 kbps, Tidal's quality is substantially greater. Users can likewise select to spend for specific quality levels. The only downside is that not all albums are consisted of in Tidal's Tidal Masters library. Spotify You can listen to the very best hip hop music on Spotify if you understand which tunes are trending. Spotify recently released its year-end list of most-streamed tunes, and hip-hop artists were prominently featured. For example, "Rapstar" by Mary J. Blige grew 520% in the U.S. throughout the year that ended in February. Another tune, "State of mind," by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, acquired more than 185% in the U.S. within the hour following the Super Bowl.
The synergy in between hip-hop and streaming has actually upended music industry company practices and triggered outrageous bidding wars to register brand-new rap skill. It has actually likewise devalued the business significance of emerging female pop vocalists and rock. It has actually likewise challenged long-held presumptions about race and music. With its appeal, hip-hop is becoming the most streamed genre on Spotify. You can find traditional hip-hop artists like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg on Spotify. If you're looking for a new way to listen to hip hop, you may wish to try Apple Music Its Hip-Hop playlist contains 9 of the top 10 songs, while Spotify's features are more minimal. For example, there are no Leading 20 tunes by Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Lorde, Haim, Miley Cyrus, and other popular artists. If you're trying to find hip-hop music on Spotify, make certain to attempt the free trial. Apple Music According to brand-new stats, Apple Music has actually claimed over half of the US on-demand audio streaming market for blockbuster hip-hop albums in the past 2 months. The information is based upon Alpha Data, which tracks the volume of on-demand audio streams for the first week of US chart-topping albums. While this number might seem low, it represents a big leap from Spotify's single-digit share. For those who are not going to spend for a monthly subscription, Apple Music is a good choice. The free tier lasts 90 days and allows you to listen to numerous tracks. You can likewise listen to video and human-curated radio stations. One major drawback of Apple Music is that it does not have non-music content, such as podcasts and LiveXLive's Stories. Regardless of its lots of benefits, it can be challenging to pick in between these two services. The most significant benefit of Apple Music is its smooth integration with Siri. You can turn Siri into your personal DJ by asking her to play your preferred hip-hop songs from 1993, or just type in your preferred hip-hop artist and music genre to hear it from their point of view. The very same opts for sharing your music. You can activate this feature by visiting your profile page and clicking on 'Start sharing with friends'.
YouTube Music. YouTube Music for Hip Hop celebrates renowned Hip-Hop artists. The service uses playlists from eras throughout the Hip-Hop category, and signboards featuring music icons were positioned across significant cities. The service also hosted a Town Hall collecting where Basa discussed the value of celebrating the history of Hip-Hop and bridging generations through music. This post checks out a couple of methods to promote your music on YouTube. While a lot of YouTube music channels do not create premium music videos, some do. Examine the submission requirements for each channel and make sure you send according to their standards. You can also monetize your music by registering for an advertisement with the music channel. The ad plays in front of all videos on that channel. Make sure to call each channel directly. A few of them have stringent standards about what categories of music they accept. Getting your music seen by big names is not as challenging as it appears. Lots of hip-hop artists use YouTube to spread their music. However, it is necessary to comprehend that these channels are run by independent artists. For example, some channels have fewer subscribers than YouTube. If a major label owns the music channel, it's unlikely to be an option. The only downside of this approach is that it's tough to discover the artist you're looking for. Pandora If you wish to listen to Hip hop music on Pandora, you're in luck! listen to online radio 'll discover the music of rap artists like Lil' Kim, Future, Nicki Minaj, and Rich Homie Quan in curated playlists. And they sound completely various than hip hop tunes from 40 years earlier! That's not a surprise! You can even listen to their commentary as you enjoy their music. But if you're new to hip hop music, here are a few ideas to assist you start. First of all, you might be wondering how Pandora has the ability to find and play hip hop music. Well, Pandora is partnering with SoundCloud to bring you this brand-new experience. The company invested $75 million in SoundCloud last year and just recently launched a show called 'The Lookout' on its Hip-Hop Nation channel. The song choice is diverse and modern-day, with the background sound of a string ensemble. You can likewise find hip hop music on this station that connects to fresh Hip Hop. The Mighty Mojo's Top 50 tracks of 2023
Tumblr media
Some of my all time favourite moments have happened in 2023. Things I’ll be boring people with forever, long past the point that anyone expects any kind of sense from me. Most of them came in the musical sphere as well; playing first shows, playing last shows, attending shows by others, starting a new music podcast…even singing. Out loud. Into a recording device! And yet, it’s not exactly been a parade of roses from gun to tape. There’s definitely been some times where I’ve needed the calming, comforting routine of my list - days when listening to a couple of albums fulfilled my desperation to find something I could call productive, or positive. Luckily for me, and for all of us, there was plenty of music.
My long list hit the 100 mark earlier than ever before. August 12th. As much as I was enjoying the wealth of great music I was hearing, in the back of my mind I was sweating over the December cull. I may have had to set a couple of weeks aside like the old days when I was producing an albums list as well. I no longer have that kind of time! In the end, the filtration happened naturally. There are times when a song is the greatest ever after 1 or 2 listens, but can go stale after 12-15. Circumstances and mindstate can often overly influence feelings - like a music version of Beer Goggles. In the cold light of day it was obvious who had to be left on read. Well, listened.
Initially I was surprised to see there wasn’t that much Hip Hop. In total there’s 9 of the 50 that would be universally considered Hip Hop, matching the same number from the Bubble List, and down from 14 last year. That instinctively makes me feel like I’ve missed something, and no doubt I’ll find some tunes that could have made it here over the next couple of years. But when I was preparing the long thread yesterday, It made me reconsider.
There might not be as much of what we conventionally recognise as Hip Hop, but there’s loads of RAPPING. ArrDee is rapping. Kae Tempest is rapping. Cooper T are rapping. Genesis Owusu is rapping. Paris Texas are rapping. The genre has fully burst out of the box, the linear lines melting away. In the year Hip Hop celebrates its 50th birthday, the best way I can honour it is to acknowledge its influence wherever it lies.
Another hallmark this year has been enjoyable belligerence. Gen and the Degenerates delivering what their label wanted while taking the piss out of them for it, Willie J Healey serenading us with the sweetest fuck you since Cee Lo Green, Corinne Bailey Rae doing the one thing no-one expected and writing a punk banger.
I love it when songs have a spiritual sibling, and the ease with which New York Transit Queen slips into Deceptacon is thrilling and satisfying in equal measure. I can say the same about Little Dragon, as Slugs of Love feels like the little sister of Whip It - bouncing around, demanding to be sat together. That’s a very different thing to a song that rips off another. These are complimentary sounds, rhythms and melodies - the kind of thing I and every other DJ is trying to find 300 times a night. Starting in about 8 hours.
See you there.

That sounds like a mouthful and marketing speak, but, in this rare case, Interval has delivered on its marketing hype. As we close out 2023, Interval Presents, Warner Music Group’s (WMG) in-house podcast network, has curated a selection of podcasts for you to catch up on heading into the holidays. I've reviewed these chosen podcasts during 2023 and have enjoyed all of them. It's a rare moment when a big company and me are on the same page. The below podcasts from Interval Presents are available on all major podcast platforms - hope you enjoy listening.   If you are looking to get lost in an immersive rollercoaster love story told in the form of a narrative album, featuring brand new, original music woven into the story and score - listen to Underwater, a sexy, neo-noir thriller fiction series at the cutting edge of audio entertainment, starring Jason Derulo and Alexandra Shipp. Great story, terrific acting, original music and top-notch sound design. The Last Dance [SEASON FINALE]: Nico has vowed to protect Ana… but what he doesn’t know might hurt her. When her past finally catches up to her, it’s time for them both to find out if curses are really meant to be broken.  If you are looking to be inspired by personal experiences of failure turned into personal growth with a diverse lineup of celebrity guests who have weathered their fair share of struggles and professional setbacks during their careers - listen to Yeah, I F***ed That Up, hosted by Grammy-nominated hitmaker Billy Mann. Family First (ft. Kelly Rowland): Kelly Rowland is shocked to be asked - what is your biggest fuck up? “No one has ever asked that!” Host Billy Mann, who has known and worked with Kelly for decades, talks to her about life’s bumpy transitions - going from Destiny’s Child to a solo career and what it was like to be dropped by a music label that still repped her as part of the greatest musical female trio of all time. If you are intrigued to learn about the history of Black radio through the story of those who made a long-lasting impact on the medium we know and love today - listen to Amplify Color, hosted by Ryan Cameron, a 2x Emmy winner, the host of “Voice of Atlanta,” a member of the Georgia and Black Radio Hall of Fame, and long-time Atlanta DJ.
For music and radio fans, this show is a can't miss. Episode #13  Wendy Williams: Today we know her as a TV host, businesswoman, writer, comedian, and actress. But Wendy Williams first rose to prominence as New York City’s #1 “Shock Jocktress.” Her journey was filled with hurdles and obstacles. From being one of the few Black people in her neighborhood growing up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, to graduating almost last academically in high school, Wendy never gave up. Listeners will learn more about how, through many personal and professional trials and tribulations, Wendy Williams persevered to land in the National Radio Hall of Fame. If you are interested in a long-form podcast with a conversational art for exploring ideas, friendship and the most interesting anecdotes from the hip-hop community with special guests and celebrities - listen to Drink Champs, co-hosted by N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN.
