Around 1,700 miles and seventeen hours after they left New York City, the two vehicles found themselves fast approaching Amarillo, TX. So far the trip, while entertaining, had been mostly uneventful.

Dick had actually called Tim shortly after 4am Gotham time to check in on him. Though Tim was slightly guarded during the start of the call, once it was clear Dick wasn't going to try and call him back to Gotham and was genuinely curious about the trip, the teenager opened up a little bit more.

Dick's envy about the cannonball run was obvious once he knew what they were doing. He promised to set aside some time just the two of them to hang out so Tim could tell him all about it.

After the call, though, when Tam asked Tim if he wanted her to block off a day to spend with Dick, Tim shook his head with a melancholy smile.

"If it happens, it happens... We'll cross that bridge if we get there."

Rose had pulled ahead in the betting war with $50 she won off everyone ($10 apiece) back in Tulsa, OK when a car that everyone else thought was just a normal vehicle turned out to be a sleeper state patrol car and they narrowly avoided getting pulled over.

They listened to a mixture of music, podcasts, and audio dramas to pass some of the time. Janet secretly won $10 off of Slade for successfully planting a seed of doubt in the minds of the kids upon finishing an episode of Welcome to Night Vale.

"How freaky would it be if a town like that really existed?" Rose asked. In the other car Janet was driving while Tim and Tam had both dozed off. She smirked.

"Who says it doesn't?"

Am obvious moment of silence. "You're just messing with us..." Jason said with just the barest hint of uncertainty.

With dead seriousness. "Am I?"

Jason and Rose look at Slade.

"Don't look me. I don't know all the freaky shit Janie got up to in the Agency. I learned early on never to ask."

They dozed on and off when they weren't driving for brief catnaps, though driving at an average of 110 mph didn't allow for any longer bouts of deep sleeping.

All in all, those first 1,700 miles were pretty relaxing.

Very niche mechanics scenario: say Beau wants to scale a sheer surface higher than her movement + dash + Step of the Wind (150ft rn) with nothing to grab after moving. If Fjord uses Far Step to teleport ahead to meet her and hold an action to grab her and keep her from falling, assuming they pass every check / save asked, is this a legit way to scale it in 60ft chunks, up to 600ft? I'm not sure how falling works; this is assumes Fjord starts to at the END of a turn in which he fails to Far Step.

I mean, natch, that scenario works for any monk + caster with Far Step, but it also seems like peak Brjeaus shenanigans.

Quick sidebar before I go through this: have we considered the possibility of using D&D to teach word problems? I do have a vivid memory of listening to like, a very early campaign 1 episode in podcast form on a like, 2 hour subway ride at like 6:30 am on a Sunday morning back when I first started watching and was also supplementing my income with tutoring and had I been allowed to be like “if Gilmore asks for 750 gold, and Grog finds 90 platinum in the bottom of the bag, and Keyleth has made 3 healing potions that cost 15 gold 5 silver to make and which Gilmore’s Glorious Goods will purchase for 30 gold to sell for 50 gold, how much money do Gilmore and Vax have to spend on wine” I would have been in a much better mood.

Anyway: assuming both Fjord and Beau haven’t used any abilities.

Beau has 150 ft movement per round as mentioned

Fjord has two 5th level spell slots and two 1st level spell slots

Far Step is a bonus action and a 5th level spell that will teleport you 60 feet.

Thunder step is an action and a 3rd level spell that will teleport you 90 feet, but also make a lot of noise.

Therefore, without going into any further mechanics, we can tell this can’t work because Fjord can only use Far Step twice. However, there are a couple of things to explore:

Beau trying to scale it entirely by herself.

Technically, I think this is possible; here’s a tweet from Mike Mearls indicating that she doesn’t fall because she’s running continuously (ie, she doesn’t stop every 150 feet; the pause in her action is an instantaneous one to allow the rest of initiative to go but if you were actually watching the action she’d be running continuously, at a rate of 150 feet/6 seconds, or about 17 mph. So it will take her 4 rounds and 4 ki points.

If a DM rules she can’t do this, then I don’t think it’s possible at all; Xanathar’s guide says you fall 500 feet/round. This is incorrect from a physics standpoint. Human terminal velocity, according to the internet, is about 1038 feet/round (173 ft/s, or 53 m/s). However, it’s not that far off assuming a fall from rest; if we assume that Exandrian gravity is comparable to earth gravity, the gravitational pull of the planet is 32 ft/s/s which if we plug it into the distance equations gives us a total distance of (1/2)*32*6*6 or 576 feet.

Beau with a buff.

If Caleb cast Haste on Beau, that would only give one extra action with which to dash per turn, which would put her at 200 ft/round. It would save her a round and a ki point overall, which, considering that Haste is a low-level spell and would give Caleb a transmutation stone switch, isn’t a bad idea.

A similar scenario to the one proposed.

Fjord’s teleportation is good in battle but limited here. On the other hand, Jester has dimension door, a 4th level spell that gives you up to 500 feet of movement. It also lets you take someone else with you, so honestly just use it twice without Beau having to use a single ki point, but for the aesthetic, you could have Jester teleport 150 feet, catch Beau each time and stick her back on the wall, and scale it in 150 foot chunks.

oh my god today sucked. dear diary

in the morning was in one of the left turn lanes to get onto the highway to go to work and the car in the left turn lane next to me got rear ended by some car going like 30 mph and it made me think of the time i was driving in the mountains with some friends in early march (literally right before california shut down) and i was in a turnout waiting for faster cars to pass and a car rear ended me at like 50 mph and we had to total the car and it was the first road trip-like thing i ever took and it ended like That (completely embarrassing) and i still think about it every time im driving. i mean obviously today it was worse for the person who got rear ended but it just gave me bad flashbacks and like a faster heart rate during the whole drive. anyway then at work i was trying to do the quality control stuff for this instrument i was using that afternoon (it needs several hours to warm up) and usually it’s routine like 10 min but something was wrong this morning and it took like 2 hours to fix it. and then the main reason i was at work today was because i was taking down and staining an experiment that i had set up on monday (so like a 4 day incubation, and a week prep before that) and then halfway through staining i fucking... i fucking dropped the plate on the ground and had to throw it away bc the samples got all mixed together. so i have to redo it next week but my boss is leaving the company next week and she was supposed to show me how to analyze the data bc this is a new kind of experiment for me so now the plan’s all off. and then i realized my period leaked through my jeans so i was gonna walk around like that for the rest of the day. and then i thought i could salvage the day by doing what’s called compensation for the new experiment on the instrument which is like making sure the signals from different things won’t overlap with each other but bc this is a new kind of experiment the signals had to be adjusted from my default but there were just more and more problems and after like 3 and a half hours of troubleshooting i basically gave up and went fuck it i’ll start over next week. and then by then it was 7pm and i had accomplished nothing!! and had to drive home in the dark which is never as romantic as thunder road makes it sound. and i knew if i listened to music i would start to cry so i listened to a podcast about how trump deregulated any rule that like tried to protect the environmental and financial welfare of future americans so corporations could get better tax breaks and make more profit without actually returning any of it to the people
