2024 TV Season Analysis – Organized Crime Tops the Franchise, Law & Order Better, SVU Needs an Overhaul

The 2023-24 TV season has been a truncated TV season of 13 episodes, due the ongoing WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes that happened last year. A lot of scripted TV was back burned until the strikes ended. TV writers struck their deal first and were back to work promptly, long before actors/actresses, this should have given time to plan out their already short season. Production crunched for 13 episodes to be shot between late November until this coming week, where SVU and mother ship reboot will be wrapping up shooting their finale episodes.

But where does this season grade in its entirety? I’m going to summarize – as much as I can - my views on where the franchise stands for this season from best to worst. Click below to read.

Organized Crime – The best in the franchise creatively, hands down!

New show runner/executive producer John Shiban (The X-Files) and his writing staff understood their assignment and have definitely delivered. Organized Crime is the most entertaining series in the franchise this season, week-over-week. The storylines are so fleshed out and they don’t drag on as they had since the series started. Shiban has shifted focus to the OC main characters and their backstories as well as expanding on the OC unit in its entirety. We’ve even seen 2 of SVU’s former stars show up (Tamara Tunie, Chief M.E. Melinda Warner / Dann Florek, Donald Cragen) as well as an appearance by Peter Scanavino (ADA Dominick Carisi). We have even been introduced to more of Stabler’s family, his brothers – portrayed by guest stars Dean Norris and Michael Trotter – and while they’ve come in and shook things up for Stabler, one thing I can point out, it’s the first season since OC premiered where I haven’t felt that Elliot Stabler is on a quest for vengeance or retribution of some kind.

The cast has been firing on all cylinders this season, especially with the episode that just aired last week (“Crossroads”), where one of OC’s new team members went missing and was found to be killed, Stabler having the bury his body as he is undercover with the group that found Detective-in-Training Samir Bashir (guest star Abubakr Ali). This story is still playing out so as of now we don’t fully know who killed him but I’m sure we’re about to find out. Stabler’s younger brother, Joe Jr. may have some involvement as the investigation is about to come full circle. Meanwhile, the scene in question in this episode has Christopher Meloni and Danielle Mone Truitt deliver their most powerful scene together yet in the series and they have delivered quite a few, this one stands out though.

Excellent only begins to describe it, and Organized Crime this season. Organized Crime has yet to be renewed for the 2024-25 TV season.

Law & Order (reboot) – It’s improved, but we still have a ways to go.

There is a lot to be said of the mother ship series, both the original and this reboot. But this reboot has seen a lot in its short time on air, in this short season alone the cast has changed twice already. Jeffrey Donovan (Detective Frank Cosgrove) and the series parted ways weeks before production was set to start and veteran Sam Waterston (District Attorney Jack McCoy) chose to depart before mid-season. Sam Waterston is/will greatly be missed and he leaves behind a full legacy on the show, which he joined in 1994! Meanwhile newcomers Reid Scott (Detective Vincent Riley) and Tony Goldwyn (District Attorney Nicholas Baxter) have been welcomed by fans with open arms. The cast of the reboot no matter which season is very solid and they are all very talented, but their talents often seem crippled.

The reboot seems to have an issue fleshing out the characters. Det. Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and ADA Sam Maroun (Odelya Halevi) – and add DA Nick Baxter (Goldwyn) to me, week-in and week-out are the unsung heroes as with them we can see depth, we can understand why they make the decisions they make or feel the way they do on certain topics. I’m still on the fence about Riley’s development but he’s definitely has a more solid partnership with Shaw than Cosgrove did, and he certainly is a better character. I think they’ve got a great detective duo here – reminiscent of that of Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin) and Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) in season 18. From about the third episode this season on up, there has been an improvement in the writing, I must say in comparison from where the season started. Most of the episodes this season seem to have one singular writer who stands out, Pamela Wechsler, who also serves as executive producer. Girl power!

What can help the reboot:

The writers need to get away from talking points and political affiliation when it comes to the characters and even the weekly storylines - looking at you show runner Rick Eid - it makes the characters come off as caricatures and stereotypes. And maybe not directly rip the episodes from the headlines near verbatim. It takes away from it if we already know how it plays out – where is “the Law & Order twist?” They need to deep dive into Vincent Reilly, Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) and Kate Dixon (Camryn Manheim); we have talented actors on here, give them something that makes us stand up and clap and relate to these characters and stop making them one-dimensional, especially ADA Price. I must say I’ve been enjoying the legal side a bit more with the addition of Goldwyn’s Baxter, his back-and-forth every week with Price has a feel of the original series run, where we see multiple points of views on cases and it doesn’t feel/sound like rhetoric. And speaking of that run, it wouldn’t hurt for them to find ways to invest those old characters in the reboot. Just because Sam has departed doesn’t mean we still don’t want to see old faces or even faces from the other L&O series show up. Elisabeth Rohm (ADA Serena Southerlyn) and Milena Govich (Det. Nina Cassady) have directed episodes! Raul Esparza and Hugh Dancy both starred in Hannibal, I could see former-ADA now Defense Attorney Rafael Barba sitting at the defense table and likely wiping the floor with Price! Tony Goldwyn even wants Mariska Hargitay to direct an episode. Let’s make the mother ship enjoyable to watch again!

It was renewed for a 24th season (4th for the reboot). The mother ship has a second chance at greatness and to continue its legacy on television, not a lot of shows get that. It would be wise that those in charge on mother ship remember that.

SVU – The 25th milestone season ranks as one of the worst.

I originally had a two-page long document on this season of SVU alone and I’ve had to shorten it down and it’s still not that short. But if I had to describe the 25th record-breaking season of SVU in 1 word, that word would be “bad.” There are calls on social media for show runner/executive producer David Graziano to be fired from the series. I’m not one to openly call for people to lose their jobs, but clearly there is something wrong and the downward spiral of the ratings mixed with bad press for SVU episodes this season is showing that. Nothing about season 25 jumps out as milestone season and there are only a handful of episodes as of now, that I would consider episodes worth going back to watch again: “Tunnel Blind”, “Duty to Report”, “Probability of Doom”, and “Children of Wolves” which was directed by Mariska Hargitay.

It’s the writing and direction of this season, period. There is no other reason or excuse that flies. There is clearly no investment from the management level behind the scenes at SVU in this milestone season being the best it could have been. The Maddie storyline overtook the season and its resolution didn’t exactly hit the mark either. Where is the retrospective? Why haven’t we gone over past cases? Seen former victims/survivors (other than 2 minutes worth of Maria from “911”)? Why did Olivia stop seeing Dr. Lindstrom (Bill Irwin)? Where is the ‘healing?’ The guest stars? We haven’t seen any former stars, other than Kelli Giddish (Detective Amanda Rollins), and that proves to me that it was a mistake to fire her in the first place. “Where is the energy? Where is the spatter? This is life-less dreck. A cheap knock-off…” (diehard SVU fans; if you know, you know). But seriously, nothing about this season overall screams “25 years!”

With the season opener, I was sure David Graziano and the writers turned the page on the mess that was most of the entire 24th season of SVU. Turns out I was wrong to think it. It seems to be doubled down. It’s proof that despite his behavior, he’s just not a good fit for SVU. He doesn’t seem to understand how to write for this show and be the voice of who women/people look up to and the voice that victims and survivors need. I honestly think he would serve better on a Criminal Intent reboot or something since he seems to like that aspect of the crimes more so than investigatory and the legal side – Peter Scanavino’s screen time has greatly decreased and well as legal scenes.

What can help SVU:

A lot of damage is done, but it’s not irreversible. The best call is to replace the person at the top if they aren’t going to change themselves, (sorry but not sorry David). The popular eras of SVU are seasons 3-7 and again 13-17 and for good reason; Neal Baer and Warren Leight remain the two people who have seen SVU at their peaks. Going into a record breaking season 26, someone who can understand the intricacies of SVU needs to take the helm and get this show turned around. Focus needs to be on steadying the storylines and fleshing them out in a meaningful way to where they connect and not have crucial bits just disappear into thin air. We need to get SVU’s focus back on uplifting the voices of victims and survivors and their journeys, as well as to delve deep again into the world of the NYPD SVU squad. It’s not just about “rape case of the week” the actual SVU deals with kidnappings, crimes against the children, the disabled/elderly, working in conjunction with the Hate Crimes unit/federal govt., trafficking and more, let’s get the variety back in the crimes – and let’s stop showing the crime taking place on screen and in graphic manner. The crime scene analysis, forensics, court scenes and legalese needs to be put back into this series, I’ve honestly felt it decrease even before S24 as far back as some S22.

We need to see Carisi navigate through these cases and the back-and-forth with the defense as well as in his own bureau. We’ve yet to see Carisi interact with the district attorney (Jack McCoy, Sam Waterston – now Nick Baxter, Tony Goldwyn) much like his preceding ADAs. Benson’s character needs to go back to therapy and deal with her issues head on (Lindstrom, Bill Irwin), she had done that up until EDMR in season 24 became her new way and it’s not working for her, since the writers seem to use it now as a crutch to say “she’s healing” but then turn around and have her do things to suggest otherwise. Benson also needs to be written as a leader and delegator more so than taking every case away from her “squad” and solving them personally. Actually from a story standpoint it would be great to see Benson face repercussions for continually doing this, in the real world that would have consequences as how can she personally investigate cases and run the unit?

And with the unit, their stories need to be dissected more. Velasco (Octavio Pisano) in particular, he had an edge in season 23 as the new guy that might be a snitch for the Chief of Detectives (McGrath, Terry Serpico) but in season 24 they pushed this character into a corner with liking Detective Grace Muncy (Molly Burnett, who departed last season) and the Chilly storyline last season and can’t seem to get him out of that corner. Velasco comes off as “just there” much in the way Fin (ICE T) is starting to. And where is Phoebe (Jennifer Esposito)? Detective Bruno and Captain (to-Detective or Chief?) Curry (Kevin Kane and Aime Donna Kelly) are pretty much holding down the squad and are actually the more I look to, to solve the cases and they are the only ones peaking my interest.

SVU is heading to record-breaking season 26, if they want to reach their goal of stopping at 30. Dick Wolf, NBC and those behind the scenes need to get serious about it if that is what they really want. Otherwise, you’re about to have long-time viewers and new viewers alike turning away. Despite what people believe about ever-lasting loyalty, it does have an end date.

Y/N’s POV 

Jail is the fucking worst. It’s not what they present on TV at all it’s hard and rough and not a place that someone like me belongs.

This whole innocent or guilty thing doesn’t apply anymore. It’s never about whether you did the crime or not it’s about how you can get out of it. 

That’s something i’ve always been good at finding my way out of things. It’s because of my looks honestly. I take a lot of time working on myself. Eating the right things and not moe procedural work and hair and nails. I bake out in the sun and tan and i make sure i look like a barbie doll. 

It’s worked for me my entire life. Being able to walk through any situation and work or perhaps flirt my way out of the situation. I mean why else would you work so hard if you weren’t going to use it to your advantage. 

Right now you were currently sitting in the district attorneys room.

You were currently out on bond and your very old but very expensive lawyer was convincing you to take a deal. You a deal ?? Like hell you would. 

Okay maybe i should start at the top with everything. I’m not the devil in this case okay.

My ex boyfriend was stalking me and was harassing me all the time. He wouldn’t leave me alone and i thought something bad was going to happen.

He was breaking into my apartment and leaving letters and sending me pictures polaroids of myself while i was out and about.

I tried to tell people but no one listened. Expect Bobby that is. He told me not to worry about it. 

I didn’t ask any questions and when Matt ended up dead I didn’t think to go around telling anyone. I was more relieved than anything. 

But when your ex ends up dead of course your name comes in the investigation.

Then when Bobby got offered a sweetheart deal he took it in a heartbeat and told everyone you asked him to do it. 

Which was absolutely crazy. I mean sure you weren’t complaining when he died but you never asked for the man to be murdered. I’m innocent in all of this really. 

Right now you were sitting in the courtroom while all these delicious men were debating on what to do with you.

Your lawyer had stepped out for a moment not that you were complaining though because this situation is everything you wanted. 

They all were a little older than you, but silver foxes were the best they have knowledge they knew what they were doing. 

“Come on just go easy she clearly didn’t know what she was doing” The tall italian one said. He was clearly an ex cop you can tell a man like him he knew how to use handcuffs. 

“Absolutely not she knew what she was doing was wrong she set into the motion the events of a mans murder”  The shorter man with brownish hair yelled. 

“Come on gentleman why are we even wasting our time with this the jury is going to convict her and our hands will be washed” the shorter more angrier man said. 

You sat up straight in your chair. Your back was stretched, your girls were out and proud. You “accidently” knocked over a coffee cup with a tiny bit of coffee. 

“Opps i’m sorry gentlemen” You said smiling and laughing. 

The taller man got up and cleaned up the mess and you could see him look up at you. Your eyes meant with him and you flashed a smile down at him. It was clearly working he wasn’t looking away. 

“All finished now with what ever this was” the shorter man said. 

The taller man got up and threw the stuff away in the bin. 

“What’s your name” You asked in a flirty voice 

“Dominic Carisi, everyone just calls me Carisi” He said in a more nervous tone 

“What the hell am i watching” The shorter man yelled. 

“And who might you be” You said leaning on the table and the man looked at you with a disbelief look in his eyes. 

“Michael Cutter and that’s Mr Cutter to you” He said in a more stern voice. 

“Well so nice to meet you” You said

“And you, who might you be last but not certainly least” You said batting your eyes and moving around a little bit to show off your assets. 

“Rafel Baraba” He said in a monotone showing he wasn’t even that interested. 

You reached out your hand and you took his in yours and have it a nice squeeze. He didn’t let go right away which surprised you then he snatched in a matter of seconds and played it off. 

Carisi was looking at you out of the corner of his eye and it was hard to tell what he was thinking.

He looked somewhat jealous but also irritated. Like what was running through his mind. Either way it seemed like a good opportunity for you to run it through. 

So you looked away from Barba and looked back him. His piercing blue eyes taking a look at yours.

You leaned in and he just sat there a moment not moving either. 

It felt like there was a moment going on there and you took his hand and brought it up to your lips and gave him a kiss on the hand. 

“Whoa okay don’t do what” Carisi yelled. 

“Come on police officer you liked it” You said 

“It’s ADA and no I didn’t” he said 

You turned your back and looked at the shorter man who was leaning against the wall just kind of looking at you. 

“And what about you I know you like it to don’t you” You said running your tongue against your lips. 

“No absolutely not” Barba said in a mototone 

You gotten up from your seat and walked over to Cutter who was now sitting at the table and looking more and more over this.

You sat down on the empty seat next to him and placed your hand on top of his. 

He looked at you and he got a look on his face where he was both appalled at what ever was going on and he also looked intrigued too. 

You knew you could pull him out he was acting tough but was he also really that tough you thought to yourself. 

You leaned in and you got closer to his face. He just kind of looked you in the eyes and he quickly looked down at your lips. 

“Come on you know this isn’t on me” You whispered quietly and grabbed his tie and played with it. 

“All i know is  your a criminal” he whispered back 

You just smirked and played cool you would never let the upper hand slip away.

"Maybe take a girl out before you judge her" You said.

He just looked at you with a mischevious look on his face like he was debating on taking you up on the offer.

You got up and walked over to Barba and he looked a little more annoyed than usual with you. You just stood up straight girls were showing curves were popping off. 

“What about you you know what they say the biggest surprises come in small packages” You said putting your hand on the wall over top of him and looking down at him. 

He seemed into it like he was hiding it just like the rest of them. They all knew they wanted it but they couldn’t have it. Was it because they wanted you or they wanted they knew what they couldn’t have. 

You didn't forget about carisi though you knew he was going to be the one to come through in the end. you had him so close you just needed to nail it in.

That’s what it was a lot of the times with the men you dated. Was it because they had an illiouson of something else. 

You decided now was the time to get what you wanted you played them like you needed. They all were leaning towards you they didn’t want to admit it but they all secretly wish they had you. 

You walked over to where you were sitting. And this time you let your body fall loose. You wanted to look more simpler more sad 

You looked over at Carisi with a more soft tone then you ever had. You were begging him with your eyes.

"Mr Carisi please listen to me that's all I asked" You told him

"I can't talk without your lawyer" He said in a soft voice which means you had him

“Wheres my lawyer” You asked

“Why your not going anywhere anytime soon” Cutter said. 

You worked your face up to look sad and more worried. 

“I need to get out of here” You said

You looked more irritated and more like something was bothering you. 

“I know what you all may think okay I’m not heartless i really didn’t know what he was going to do okay. I would never wish anyone dead” You said. 

You let your tears roll down your face something you were good at. 

You quickly wiped them away and it worked with everyone. They all softened their tones and sat down. 

“Listen let us get your lawyer we can help you” Carisi said. 

“How”  You asked in a soft tone. 

Barba walked into the hallway to gesture your lawyer to come back. After a few seconds he did. 

You all were sitting down at the table and looking at each other. You were playing with your fingers something you did to help make it like you were nervous. 

“How about we offer criminally neglect homicide 2-4” Barba said 

“No way she was a victim” Your lawyer said. 

“I was scared and worried all the time okay he wouldn’t leave me alone he was going to kill me” You said in a soft scared tone.

“You willing to testify” Cutter asked. 

“Yes anything” You said. 

“FIne were drop charges for the testimony” Barba said. 

“Thank you lets go” Your lawyer said. 

You got up and left before they could change their mind. As you were walking out you looked back at the guys. 

You put your signature smile on them 

“This was fun boys” You said leaving the room giving them a little wave. 

You walked out the room and was laughing to yourself. You knew damn well you weren’t going to Jail not never.

Sonny Carisi:

    Ironically, you used to be a lawyer. You came from a rich family that always pushed you to do your best and moved from Boston to New York after secretly attending the police academy behind your parents' backs.

    I walked into the squad room, Liv had told me ahead of time that there were some changes but I wasn't expecting a whole new seating arrangement. "Y/N, I know you and Amanda work harmoniously together but we have a new guy so you're going to break him in." She gestured towards the man sitting across from my desk. I placed my stuff down and sat, ignoring him. I wasn't trying to be rude I just had a lot of paperwork to do

    "Nice to meet you, I'm Dominick Carisi Jr. but you can just call me Sonny." He stretched his long arm across the desk and I shook it.

    "Y/N L/N. I'm guessing you're my new partner, I'm happy to be working with you, Sonny."

Nick Amaro:

    You met him at the same time Amanda met him when he walked into the squad room with a full beard. Funny thing, you moved to New York long before Amanda, you were getting tired of Kim's shit. 

    "When are you going to stop bringing new people in?" Liv asked Cragen, it was almost like she wanted to be fired.

    "When you get over Elliot. Look at Y/N, she's recovering well." Cregen pointed at me.

    "I'm only doing well because Amanda is here. I'm telling you she can read my thoughts." I whispered the last part, earning a smack on the back of the head.

    "Well don't hate me for this, I'm partnering you with a Narcotics transfer, and Amanda, you'll be with Fin."

    "Jesus Christ, another one? Was Fin, not enough?" 

    "That was uncalled for." Fin jokingly glared as the elevator opened.

    "Oh wow," I mumbled when I saw my new partner I walked up to him and introduced myself. "I'm Y/N Rollins, you must be the narcotics transfer."

    "Is it that obvious?" I nodded and he chucked. "Nick Amaro,"

    "Careful Amaro, your new partner has a bad temper." Amanda chuckled when Nick turned to you shocked.

Rafael Barba:

    You were an elementary school teacher, first grade specifically. You met Rafael when one of your student's parents raped you for giving their kid a bad grade on a test. 

    "You know I'll never be able to return to my job after this, right?" I frowned and looked at the SVU captain.

    "Well, not at that school. But maybe another school would take you." The door opened and a man in a suit came in. 

    "Ms. L/N? I'm Rafael Barba, the ADA." 

    "Nice to meet you." I scooted away, scared he would touch me.

    "Now, I understand what happened to you, so let's win this. Yeah? Tell me what happened."

    "Well, I had requested for this parent to come in for a conference because his daughter was failing all her tests, he agreed and when he was in my classroom he pinned me against the wall and raped me, he kept saying 'no one fails my daughter, this is your fault'." 

    "Well, we got enough from the rape kit to arrest him, we just need a positive ID from you." I nodded, anything to but this perv away.

Olivia Benson:

    You were found in a pimp house that the squad infiltrated, and you were around 5 years old. Your mother pimped women out to "Give them better lives"

    "Everybody get down!" I heard a voice yell, and people started rushing in and pushing people down. I quickly ran to the corner of the room, trying to escape the chaos. A woman came up to me and crouched down to my height.

    "Hi sweetie, my name is Olivia, what's yours?"

    "Y-Y/N."

    "Nice to meet you Y/N. Don't worry, you're safe now." They brought me to a hospital to check me out, and once they were done they sat me in a room with toys, No one else was there though, it was just me, in a room, all alone. I decided to draw with some crayons. The door opened and the same women from before came in and sat across from me. "Hi Y/N, do you remember me?" 

    "Yeah, you're Olivia, you arrested my mommy." I continued working on my drawing.

    "Do you know why I arrested your mommy?" 

    "Because she sold women. I was next. She said I was going to a nice man named Josh."

    "Well, you're not anymore. What are you drawing?"

    "Me and Josh. Mommy had us meet, and said I had to be broken in."

    "Sweetie, did they make you do something you didn't want to do?" I rapidly nodded.

    "Something was shoved inside of me, I said it hurt and to stop, but they didn't."

Amanda Rollins:

Amanda adopted you in Georgia, after a case that involved your older sister. You were waiting in a room in the hospital for your 'new mother'

    "Hey honey, how are you holding up?" I recognized the woman, she asked me questions about my sister,

    "Good." I made one of my Barbies hit the other one.

    "Your doll says otherwise."

    "She's fine, just a bruise." I colored a purple mark on her forehead. "If she doesn't recover I'll have a nice burial for her."

    "....Okay... Let's go home, okay?" 

Alex Cabot:

    You were the daughter of a rapist, he would use you to lure women in, they would come to babysit you then he would pull them into the bedroom. You were a main witness in the trial, going against the person who gave you food and shelter.

    "Okay, are you sure you can do this?" Detective Benson rubbed my back, we were in the hallway, waiting for Detective Stabler to come to get me to testify.

    "Yeah-yeah totally." The door opened and we were motioned to come in. "No turning back now."

    "The people call Y/N Hewwitt to the stand." I took a deep breath and sat down, bad enough that I was testifying against my own father but the crowd staring at me just made it so much worse.      "I-I uh,"

    "Answer the question Miss Hewwitt." The judge badgered.

    "I-" my chest got tight, "my-" tears blurred my vision, "10." I pushed out trying to calm myself.

    "Stop this madness, my daughter is clearly in distress." My father tried to trick everyone, oh how I wanted to see him get locked away.

    "The witness is dismissed."

    "No-" I wheezed out. "No-I-I saw it! He did it!" 

    "Miss Cabot, control your witness." The ADA came over to talk to me but when she touched me I broke even more.

    "Don't touch me! He would look for babysitters, tell them he had a 10-year-old daughter who needed to be looked after while he was at work, he would pretend to leave then come back and drag her into the bedroom. She would beg him to stop, he did that to at least 8 babysitters." There was a pause before my father jumped from his seat.

    "You little slut! I gave you a place to live and you ratted me out! You will die for this, just like your mother!" He was dragged out and I started sobbing the ADA held her arms out to me, I accepted this time and sobbed into her chest while she rubbed my back and promised I'd never have to do that again.

9-1-1 Season 6 - Constructive Criticisms #8

Lack of Professional Development and Growth

Professional development and growth is important for several reasons but mainly it helps people hone their current skills and gain new ones so they can move forward in their careers.  In real life, people want to develop and grow in their jobs because they don’t want to get bored or be pigeon held into a role for the next 30 years. Since life imitates art, professional development and growth should also be important for 9-1-1’s First Responders but unfortunately, it hasn’t been.

For six seasons, every 9-1-1 First Responder has been doing the same job they were doing in season 1 or after they joined the 118 and Metro Dispatch in season 2 as either a field sergeant with the LAPD, a captain, firefighter/EMT, firefighter/paramedic with the LAFD and an operator with Metro Dispatch.  Even though one main character was offered a promotion in season 2 and two of them were allowed to temporarily fill the 118’s interim captain role, none of them have received job promotions even though two recurring characters were promoted and/or allowed to move on to different roles.

For the last two and a half seasons, 9-1-1 has struggled to keep a lot of their viewers but this shouldn’t be the case since they still have most of the original ensemble cast. While several factors have contributed to viewers no longer tuning in, it’s possible the lack of professional development and growth for main characters is also a factor.  It shouldn’t be unusual for viewers to expect to see First Responders who accept 9-1-1 calls, arrest people who violate the law, fight fires and perform rescues move forward in their careers. However, for whatever reason, the focus over the last two and a half seasons has primarily been on main characters’ personal lives instead of their professional ones.  This is an issue because the longer their professional development and growth is ignored, it's likely more viewers will lose interest.

The TV show Law & Order: SVU has an ensemble cast too but one of the reasons they’ve remained successful for more than two decades is because of the professional growth and development of its’ main characters. Captain Olivia “Liv” Benson didn’t start her career as a captain more than 24 years ago, actually she was a Detective but her professional development has been consistent with her being promoted from Detective to Sergeant, then Lieutenant and now she’s the Captain of the Special Victims Unit.  Other characters on the show were also developed professionally including Odafin “Fin” Tutuola who was a Detective but now he’s a Sergeant and Dominick Carisi, Jr. who was a Detective and a law school student but he’s now the Manhattan ADA.

I completed a blog post during 6A that addressed the main characters lack of growth (linked here) but it included details about both their professional and personal lives.  This post deals solely with the lack of professional development and growth for them as outlined during 6A and 6B.

My eighth set of “constructive criticisms” regarding the lack of professional development and growth for the main characters in season 6 are included below the cut.  Please note criticizing a TV show is NOT a bad thing especially since TV critics have been doing it for decades.  Constructive criticisms are designed to help make something better and they are VERY different from negativity.  A person can offer criticisms about a form of entertainment they spend their time watching and not be negative about it the same way two people can agree to disagree on a topic.  Just because one person liked the season, they shouldn’t expect others to feel the way they do because everyone has their own opinions.  Simply put, two people can have different opinions about 9-1-1 and those opinions can COEXIST since they are not mutually exclusive.

                   Warning! ⚠️“Constructive Criticisms” Ahead!⚠️ 

There are seven first responder main characters and as mentioned above none of them have received job promotions over the past six seasons.  The characters of Athena, Bobby, Buck, Chimney and Hen have been on the show since season 1 while the characters of Eddie and Maddie started in season 2. But they’ve all been in their first responder roles long enough for them to have received a promotion or they should be working towards professional development that should eventually lead to them being promoted.

Each main character first responder is listed below by department and ranks/job positions along with details about their current roles. Also, a section about recurring characters has been included to illustrate how they were promoted or allowed to move to other firehouses while the main characters remain stagnated.

Athena – Field Sergeant

In 2x4, Captain Maynard offered Athena a job promotion to Lieutenant on an interim basis in the Northeast Division. During their conversation, the captain said she had applied for a promotion to Lieutenant four times but she stopped applying, then she asked why. Athena said she had been passed over every time she applied only to be told she didn’t have the necessary leadership qualities for further advancement.  After thinking about it for several days, she turned down the promotion because she told Michael her goals had changed from when she was in her twenties since her priorities included her kids and her family. She also told Bobby she liked being a field sergeant because it allowed her to see what was going on in the world and at the end of the day, she could come home and let it all go.

That was almost five years ago, she hasn’t been offered a promotion since and now that she and Bobby are empty nesters, why hasn’t she been offered a promotion again?

There’s no reason she can’t be offered a promotion now, especially since she’s repeatedly shown she possesses the necessary skill set to be a Lieutenant. Also, she can be promoted and still work alone since LAPD Lieutenants can be assigned to specialized divisions and they attend community meetings, teach classes at the academy and they conduct interviews of sworn and civilian personnel. Athena’s never had a performance review in CANON which is ridiculous because she has the leadership skills that can get her promoted and maybe one day, she could be promoted to Police Captain.

Bobby – 118 Captain

Bobby’s a good captain and he’s been the 118′s captain for several years but he’s never expressed a desire to be promoted and no one’s been shown asking him if he wants to be anything other than a captain.  In 2x4, during his conversation with Athena, he said he wanted to be on the truck with his team for as long as he could but in 4x12 he told her if they found the treasure, they could think about retiring.  Then they argued in 4x13 after Athena admitted in 4x12 she was offered retirement after she was attacked but she turned it down.

The positions and rank for the LAFD show the next step for Bobby would be Battalion Chief then Assistant Chief but since he hasn’t said anything about wanting to be promoted, could he be preparing for retirement?

Prior to season 6, Bobby wasn’t shown doing performance reviews which begs the question why not especially since everyone on his team is highly skilled?  No one was shown in CANON giving him any feedback on his own performance when there’s a lot that could have been said about it.

If he’s planning to retire, he has a dilemma because there are currently three people who could be considered once he’s gone.  In 6x14, he was shown preparing Chimney to become captain sometime in the near future; however, Hen and Buck also should be considered. Initially, Chimney said he didn’t want to be in the big chair in 6x14 but Buck wanted to be considered in 6x1 and Bobby didn’t even ask Hen before he chose Lucy. Ultimately, he gave the spot to Hen after he spoke with her at the end of 6x1 but he should have asked her first without even considering Lucy especially since Lucy had only been with the 118 for a few months.

If it’s based on years of experience, who will become captain after Bobby leaves, Chimney or Hen?  (Please note, in this instance, Buck wouldn’t be considered since he’s only been with the 118 for six years.)

It would be better if he had CANON conversations with them to determine what they want instead of him assuming he knows.  Also if Bobby’s not ready to retire, what does he want to do?  No one knows since the show won’t even show him talking to other captains or to any of the department leaders.

Buck – Firefighter/EMT

Buck is a great firefighter and Bobby said so himself in 6x1 when he told him nobody goes harder than he does.  However, the issue is and continues to be, Buck wants to grow and advance his career but for some reason, Bobby won’t have the conversation with him. They talked about it in 6x1 when Bobby told him he needed more life experience but that was subjective and based on Bobby’s opinion. After he said it, Buck should have asked him to show him where it states that in the employee handbook.  

If Bobby feels like Buck’s not ready to be interim or captain, then as his captain, part of his responsibilities are to help him get there.  In 5x5 when Buck was training Ravi, Bobby didn’t say anything about the way Buck was acting like a tyrant.  Buck had Ravi scared to death but Bobby looked the other way even though it would have been the perfect time for Bobby to remind Buck that when he trained him, he didn’t act like a drill sergeant.  It appears him doing that would have made too much narrative sense, so the show had Bobby make funny faces at the situation instead of having him address the issues he saw happening within his team. Buck put peer pressure on Ravi to perform while Hen and Eddie struggled to work together even though they didn’t have any problems in 3x2 after the Tsunami when they saved a soon to be stepfather and stepson who were trapped on a yacht.

Is Buck ready to be captain right now?  NO! But he could be if Bobby would start working with him and training him.

When it comes to him being a firefighter, Buck knows the job and he knows how to think outside of the box like he did in 3x13 when he told them to “embrace the cross brace” while they were at the bowling alley helping the victim whose arm got stuck.  He said it himself in 2x18, firefighting is the one thing that makes him feel like he matters so he takes it seriously.  The LAFD job positions and ranks show that Buck’s currently a firefighter/EMT but what else does Buck want to do other than become a captain?  Maybe if the showrunner stops throwing women in his face and allows him to focus on his career, he could become a paramedic or maybe he could go to the academy and be a peer group instructor the same way Ravi and Chimney did in 6x14.  Buck has the potential to be a great captain one day but he has to be given the tools and the training he needs to do it.

Chimney – Firefighter/Paramedic

Chimney has been with the 118 longer than anyone else and he reminded Hen, Eddie and Buck about it in 6x14 while they were sitting at the dining table eating lunch.  He’s an excellent firefighter/paramedic who knows everything there is to know about the firehouse.  He’s been interim captain before during Bobby’s suspension from 2x17 - 2x18 and when he wasn’t trying to emulate Bobby, he was good at it.  In 4x14, he stepped up and told the police he was in charge of the fire since Bobby was trapped inside of the warehouse with Ethan Copeland therefore, he knows the job and he knows how to handle difficult conversations with other first responders.

Therefore, it begs the question, why did Bobby wait until 6x14 to tell him he was a great leader when he could have just said it in 6x1 instead of him picking Lucy?  Oh, it appears the answer involves them not being able to use Chimney to promote her in 6x17 when he said he saw Captain Donato coming.  Not sure how anyone saw it coming, especially when the audience couldn’t wait for her to leave the show.

Since Los Angeles doesn’t have a lieutenant’s role in its job ranks/positions for their firehouses, the next level a firefighter can obtain is captain but since there aren’t any other spots for paramedics, maybe Chimney and Hen can be shown working with department leaders to establish an Emergency Services Division (more on this topic below in Hen’s section).  It is ridiculous that Chimney had to wait almost five years for Bobby to recognize his leadership abilities and to encourage him to be a captain again when it could have happened in 2x18.

Eddie – Firefighter/EMT

Eddie’s a fantastic firefighter/EMT and he handles both roles flawlessly.  When he started with the 118, he was already a combat medic and according to Oxford University’s website, a military medic is equivalent to an EMT. Therefore, unless he was promoted to firefighter/paramedic off-screen, he’s still a Firefighter/EMT. In 6x1 Eddie said he didn’t want to be considered for the interim captain role which could mean it’s not the career path he wants to take. Therefore, the question becomes, what does he want to do?  He left the job for five months but he’s back and he’s feeling better so why didn’t his performance review include a question about what he wants to do next?  There are a lot of possibilities but he’s never said anything and no one’s ever asked him if he wants to move up the ranks. If he doesn’t that’s fine but he’s next in line to be a paramedic after Chimney gets promoted to captain.

When is Eddie going to be allowed to take the paramedic certification test?

Since his return to the 118, he’s mostly worked with Hen and Chimney as a paramedic while rarely working in the capacity of a firefighter. He’s been an EMT since he arrived at the 118 so wouldn’t it be better if he became a paramedic now rather than waiting until Chimney’s current position becomes available? Eddie’s the most senior candidate on A-shift to take on the role and he’s the only one who can do it since Julie works on B-shift.  Actually, he gave her instructions in 6x2 when they were at the Happiness Convention and he told the other paramedic in 6x5 what to do when they arrived on the scene of the home invasion. So, unless he’s already been promoted off-screen, what is the issue with him taking the test so his rank will be the same as Hen’s and Chimney’s?

Hen – Firefighter/Paramedic

Hen is an awesome firefighter/paramedic, she was a great interim captain from 6x1 – 6x4 and Bobby admitted it in 6x14 during her performance review. Therefore, it didn’t make any sense for Bobby to overlook her and assume she wouldn’t want to be interim captain just because he thought she couldn’t handle it. She clearly debunked all his assumptions when she told him she already does a lot of paperwork along with the fact that she could handle it.  She handled every emergency they were dispatched to with a level of care and understanding that couldn’t be matched by anyone else so it’s clear the things she learned in medical school combined with her years of experience as a paramedic have prepared her for the job.

Therefore, it begs the question, why didn’t Bobby ask her about her career goals in 6x14 during her performance review?  All he told her was her paramedic certification was about to expire because she hadn’t completed her continuing education hours but he got her an extension.  He said it after he told her she was probably a better captain than he was while she was in the interim role. Also, Buck called her name in 6x18 after Athena called for the captain on the radio so what is the show trying to accomplish here with the possible captain’s role that might become available in the near future?  Are they insinuating Hen won’t want it?

While she was in medical school for two years, she was able to gain knowledge that should be applied in the field but just like everything else, the show ignored those milestones she completed after she dropped out in 6x6.  In 3x16, she performed a risky medical procedure that could have led to the end of her career as a paramedic but it was also the thing that led her to medical school.  Why hasn’t she been allowed to work with the department to implement some of the procedures she learned so other paramedics can be trained to do them while they’re in the field?

It makes narrative sense for her to talk to department leaders about the possibility of changing some of the paramedics’ procedures so they can save lives while they’re in the field.  That way, if they’re ever in a situation like the one she was in before, proper procedures and protocols would already be in place. As mentioned above, she and Chimney are both excellent paramedics and they work seamlessly together so the two of them working to establish an emergency services division that’s separate from firefighters could work. Some cities have those two areas separated and their ranks are listed below.

Maddie – Operator II or Senior Operator???

Maddie’s been a 9-1-1 operator for four years (not five since she quit at the end of season 4 and didn’t return until the end of season 5) but she’s been on the phones without receiving a promotion the entire time.  It’s unclear if she’s an operator II or a senior operator since IIRC, it’s never been mentioned in CANON. When she lived in Boston and after she moved back to Hershey, she was an RN and Sue pulled her off the phones in 3x2 so she could help triage the other dispatchers. Also, in 6x4 she helped connect Lourdes and Claribel with a lawyer who could help them after Lourdes had been domestically abused.  Maddie possesses a lot of skills that could benefit the department but they aren’t being discussed along with the possibility of implementing them.

Therefore, why aren’t Maddie’s skills from her previous role as a nurse being utilized in a way that could enhance Metro Dispatch’s policies and procedures?

Even though she’s had performance reviews in CANON, none of them included her being promoted to a different job position. Does she have career goals that involve Metro Dispatch and does she want to be promoted?  No one knows since Sue was MIA for 17 out of the 18 episodes in season 6 and since Josh is still in his same role as senior operator.  Maddie trained Noah in 6x5 and even though she didn’t protect her password like she should have, after she receives more technological training on the dos and don’ts of the technology agreement she signed after she was hired, she might be a good operations trainer.  It’s interesting that after being back at Metro Dispatch for a year at the end of season 6, no one asked her about her career goals.

Jonah – Firefighter/Paramedic

Not only was Jonah hired at the 118 to replace Chimney, even though Bobby knew he was coming back, he was transferred to the 133 just for him to be fired after he captured and tortured Hen and Chimney in 5x17.  A thorough background check wasn’t completed on him but he was allowed to move on to another firehouse after only being with the 118 for a month.

Lucy – Firefighter/EMT

Not only did Lucy transfer from the 147; she was offered the interim captain role, based solely on her years of experience, even though she was incompetent and didn’t know how to handle a rescue she performed by chance in 5x14.  She was also allowed to transfer out of the 118 sometime between 6x1 and 6x17 so she could be promoted to become a captain faster.  It appears her becoming captain was the goal all along and now that she’s working in a different division, she’ll get promoted quicker while the rest of the 118 haven’t even discussed their career goals in CANON yet.

Many TV shows in the past that focused more on who their main characters were having sex with instead of focusing on the reason the show was created in the first place were cancelled after viewers continued to lose interest.  Also, other shows who managed to hang on and are still on the air, have resorted to the Soap Opera style of storytelling that has main characters who are co-workers do nothing but bed hop from one character to the next instead of focusing on the reason the show was greenlit from the beginning.

9-1-1 was a top-rated show and they have the potential to be one again if they focus on their main characters’ careers along with their professional development and growth.  The audience wants to see their favorite characters move forward and advance their careers but that hasn’t been happening. It’s not rocket science to have the characters focus on their careers especially since the show will have been on the air for seven years next season.  Hopefully, they won’t suffer the same fate as some of their predecessors and get cancelled for not growing their characters but if they keep focusing solely on the personal lives of their mains, then it’s likely they could suffer the same fate.
