2. Pheasant & Raven imagery

The Chiyoh/Abigail parallels are strong, but Chiyoh's symbolic prey animal is a pheasant instead of a deer! She uses pheasant quills as decoration for her dinner with Will, and there are some taxidermied pheasants in the hunting lodge we didn't get to see:

But my favorite detail is how she uses a pheasant bone to kill the Caged Man! Even a prey animal has sharp edges.

Meanwhile, ravens represent Hannibal's imposing presence haunting the estate. We see them on the Lecter family crest and taxidermied by the fireplace.

Doubled birds of prey motif... a nod to how Will is joining Hannibal as a predator?

All the hawk paintings could also just be referencing this single line in Hannibal Rising:

3. A Shrine for Mischa?

There's a deleted scene in the script where Will spots a Shinto shrine while snooping:

A small version of this shrine appears above the fireplace. It includes a pair of birds of paradise, the same flower Chiyoh leaves on Mischa's grave:

If you've read the books, Mischa's presence is also palpable in the deer heads watching over their dinner (not that we got to see them lol):

5. Japanese family crests (mon) on the curtains

The Secondo scene uses the weeping wisteria family crest (sagari fuji mon):

The name Murasaki means wisteria, so I assume this crest represents her. It's doubly fitting, since in real life, this is the Fujiwara crest, and Lady Murasaki's namesake (Murasaki Shikibu, author of the Tale of Genji) was a Fujiwara.

The original production design uses a princess tree family crest (kiri mon). Not sure if there was any symbolism to that choice, but they didn't go with it in the end.

I’ve always felt there was a subset of tumblr “fans” or fans of gossip that live to snark and say rude things about Chris. Way before soba noodles came along. There are some popular blogs on here I detest and loathe because they’ve said some truly cruel things due their anger and disappointment in him but since others loved these blogs they would agree with them. I can’t understand the concept of following a fanbase on tumblr for a celeb just to sit there and post negatively about them to other people.

Ryan is a bankable star but are his movies really that quality? Is his acting really quality? I don’t know if I agree because six underground remains one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a while. He also reminds me of Deadpool in literally every movie I’ve seen him. However, I still find him funny and likeable usually so I’ll tune in occasionally to his stuff. He and Blake are cute but also sometimes annoying but it doesn’t bother me.

I agree that CE is going through a bit of a career rough patch but honestly? I think you can kind of say the same about other actors too.

For example, I think Chris pine had a bit of a rough go with his directing debut (panned by critics and audiences alike - roasted by everyone). Dungeons and dragons was well received but didn’t do too much at the box office. Same with WISH. Same with don’t worry darling.

All happened this past year and this year. But are Chris pine fans roasting him 24/7? I mean, I don’t really know but I don’t think to the extent of which Chris E’s fans are doing to him. They probably hope he will get more opportunities to shine and want the best for him. Because they are his FANS.

It’s not really about comparing likeminded actors but I think CE fans and former haters have really crossed serious lines and it sincerely bothers me. The comments they’re left on that ASP post - throwing around the term nazism like it’s NBD. It’s revolting to me and I don’t see how they are pleased with themselves.

Sure I may have an unpopular opinion but I don’t think I’m wrong. I like that you remain positive but also realistic. You’re not a blind Stan and it’s really nice to see some spaces where you are maintaining your peace and giving others that as well.

Chris isn’t perfect, and I have said where I felt he lacks in his acting. But I’d much rather focus on positive things in his career. I see no point in constantly just focusing on the negative. What a miserable way to think.

Ryan can be bankable with the right script and role. But it can be very one note. This is someone who became aware of Ryan in Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place. I enjoy him but he’s not switching up his characters that much either.

I like one Chris Pine character and that’s Rise of the Guardians because I don’t have to see his face. I’m not a fan and that’s why I choose not to mention him. So we’re moving on.

I’m sure there’s a lot going on that most of us will never really know. There’s a lot of trolling, a lot of lying, a lot of distraction, and I just don’t care. I’m going to stay in my attic with fanfics and hopefully a new role real soon.

So everyone knows how I have zero faith in ASP whatsoever and don't want her near the Gilmore Girls universe ever again (old story). It's also been acknowledged that the revival was mostly using old scripts, although if you think about it a lot of it is just a rewrite of season 6 (Luke and Lorelai having communication problems, Rory being aimless and moving away from the affluent kids's sandbox, etc). And there's a lot of things in that project that it's obvious were written a long, long time ago.

However, I think the one thing that stands out to me as being written long before the OS ends is Rory's interaction with Dean. How can she possibly tell him he was "safe", "the perfect boyfriend", "I wish I met you when I was older"? Why does she seem so flirty with him and he seems so wary of her, although she clearly knows he's married and the names of at least one of his kids? She's flirtier with him than she is with LOGAN, the guy she's been in a clandestine affair with for months. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me and is the weirdest scene, performance-wise, that Alexis is in.

It just doesn't fit at all with his behavior during the affair and afterwards, which we know was horrid, and should definitely change how she feels about him, other than the flirtiness, which is odd, because she was never like that with him, ever. I guess ASP could still have blinders on about Dean and just threw something together for the five minutes she knew she'd get Jared to show up in, but the whole thing feels like something she wrote earlier to have them say to each other before all that season 5 stuff happened.

I guess I just don't buy that as obtuse as Rory can be that she still idealizes Dean years and years later. That just doesn't compute for me.

I hope I'm not completely out of pocket here, but it looks like Chris has a tendency to put energy into the wrong things. Example: scripts that weren't very good to begin with a la Playing It Cool and Before We Go.

If you enjoy those films, that's fine. But from what I've heard, those scripts were sitting around for a LONG time before Chris got to them, and there's a reason for that, I think.

I don't disagree with you entirely, as my mind immediately leaps to ASP. Perhaps it wasn't "wrong" but I don't think it was the most effective use of his time at a time in his career when it was at its peak.

In terms of scripts, he did say in older interviews that he has a problem with becoming intrigued with a less than great script because he could see how it could be improved. The problem with that is that he's not a scriptwriter to fix it, and it was at a point in the process that the scripts were not being tweaked.

JavaScript Frameworks

Step 1) Polyfill

Most JS frameworks started from a need to create polyfills. A Polyfill is a js script that add features to JavaScript that you expect to be standard across all web browsers. Before the modern era; browsers lacked standardization for many different features between HTML/JS/and CSS (and still do a bit if you're on the bleeding edge of the W3 standards)

Polyfill was how you ensured certain functions were available AND worked the same between browsers.

JQuery is an early Polyfill tool with a lot of extra features added that makes JS quicker and easier to type, and is still in use in most every website to date. This is the core standard of frameworks these days, but many are unhappy with it due to performance reasons AND because plain JS has incorporated many features that were once unique to JQuery.

JQuery still edges out, because of the very small amount of typing used to write a JQuery app vs plain JS; which saves on time and bandwidth for small-scale applications.

Many other frameworks even use JQuery as a base library.

Step 2) Encapsulated DOM

Storing data on an element Node starts becoming an issue when you're dealing with multiple elements simultaneously, and need to store data as close as possible to the DOMNode you just grabbed from your HTML, and probably don't want to have to search for it again.

Encapsulation allows you to store your data in an object right next to your element so they're not so far apart.

HTML added the "data-attributes" feature, but that's more of "loading off the hard drive instead of the Memory" situation, where it's convenient, but slow if you need to do it multiple times.

Encapsulation also allows for promise style coding, and functional coding. I forgot the exact terminology used,but it's where your scripting is designed around calling many different functions back-to-back instead of manipulating variables and doing loops manually.

Step 3) Optimization

Many frameworks do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to caching frequently used DOM calls, among other data tools, DOM traversal, and provides standardization for commonly used programming patterns so that you don't have to learn a new one Everytime you join a new project. (you will still have to learn a new one if you join a new project.)

These optimizations are to reduce reflowing/redrawing the page, and to reduce the plain JS calls that are performance reductive. A lot of these optimatizations done, however, I would suspect should just be built into the core JS engine.

(Yes I know it's vanilla JS, I don't know why plain is synonymous with Vanilla, but it feels weird to use vanilla instead of plain.)

Step 4) Custom Element and component development

This was a tool to put XML tags or custom HTML tags on Page that used specific rules to create controls that weren't inherent to the HTML standard. It also helped linked multiple input and other data components together so that the data is centrally located and easy to send from page to page or page to server.

Step 5) Back-end development

This actually started with frameworks like PHP, ASP, JSP, and eventually resulted in Node.JS. these were ways to dynamically generate a webpage on the server in order to host it to the user. (I have not seen a truly dynamic webpage to this day, however, and I suspect a lot of the optimization work is actually being lost simply by programmers being over reliant on frameworks doing the work for them. I have made this mistake. That's how I know.)

The backend then becomes disjointed from front-end development because of the multitude of different languages, hence Node.JS. which creates a way to do server-side scripting in the same JavaScript that front-end developers were more familiar with.

React.JS and Angular 2.0 are more of back end frameworks used to generate dynamic web-page without relying on the User environment to perform secure transactions.

Step 6) use "Framework" as a catch-all while meaning none of these;

Polyfill isn't really needed as much anymore unless your target demographic is an impoverished nation using hack-ware and windows 95 PCs. (And even then, they could possible install Linux which can use modern lightweight browsers...)

Encapsulation is still needed, as well as libraries that perform commonly used calculations and tasks, I would argue that libraries aren't going anywhere. I would also argue that some frameworks are just bloat ware.

One Framework I was researching ( I won't name names here) was simply a remapping of commands from a Canvas Context to an encapsulated element, and nothing more. There was literally more comments than code. And by more comments, I mean several pages of documentation per 3 lines of code.

Custom Components go hand in hand with encapsulation, but I suspect that there's a bit more than is necessary with these pieces of frameworks, especially on the front end. Tho... If it saves a lot of repetition, who am I to complain?

Back-end development is where things get hairy, everything communicates through HTTP and on the front end the AJAX interface. On the back end? There's two ways data is given, either through a non-html returning web call, *or* through functions that do a lot of heavy lifting for you already.

Which obfuscates how the data is used.

But I haven't really found a bad use of either method. But again; I suspect many things about performance impacts that I can't prove. Specifically because the tools in use are already widely accepted and used.

But since I'm a lightweight reductionist when it comes to coding. (Except when I'm not because use-cases exist) I can't help but think most every framework work, both front-end and Back-end suffers from a lot of bloat.

And that bloat makes it hard to select which framework would be the match for the project you're working on. And because of that; you could find yourself at the tail end of a development cycle realizing; You're going to have to maintain this as is, in the exact wrong solution that does not fit the scope of the project in anyway.

Well. That's what junior developers are for anyway...

It annoys me how much neocities/""old web"" enthusiasts conflate static sites with what the internet was like back then, with personalization, independence, with hard work, etc.

So much of the internet back then was PHP and ASP, including personal sites. People would share around insecure php and cgi scripts for guestbooks, polls, comments, whatever, which people now replicate with either embedded third party services, or by relying on a serverless service provider like netlify (so, a third party service.) how is that more independent than just having a dynamic site where you host everything yourself?

And the jamstack craze is a recent phenomenon, it doesn't have anything the do with the "old web". In fact a lot of it was pushed by netlify, a business with business interests.

My site has a CMS but it is still very much "hand-coded". When I want to add a new piece of content, I have to code it into the CMS. In fact I have to code more than someone with a static site because I have to write both python and html rather than just html.

And it's still just as customizable as a static site because I can do anything I can on a static site, plus more?

And, it really does not cost more than a static site because a majority of the cost of a website is storage for your images. 5 gb of storage for a dynamic site costs the same as 5 gb of storage on a static site.

In fact back when I was using neocities, it cost me more than my current host because I do like having a custom domain which is $5 a month on neocities but included in my current host and my current host costs me less than a dollar a month (this will go up as the site gets older and requires more storage but I do plan on staying at under $5 a month).

I don't think static sites are bad, in fact I think anyone interested in learning about making a website should start with a static site because you'll need to understand the static html/css/javascript stack for a dynamic website too. But I don't think they're inherently more personal/indie/punk/anti-capitalist than a dynamic site.
