Okay, so here’s part 1 of my mini comic featuring Scarlet and Herb! I don’t have a title, at least not at the moment so just enjoy! This comic is based on one month after Scarlet and Herb were arrested so it’s still the 60’s!

Explanation: Scarlet leaves one of the prison rooms at the AVL after talking with some ladies she befriended here. She goes down the hall to a little corner area where there are foam cups for drinking water through the day. She picks up a cup and starts filling it up. All of a sudden, three men talking to each other spot her and decide to come up for a “nice” conversation. How will that end??

I’ll get started on part 2 soon!!

(Btw, I know Scarlet’s prison outfit was a bit different and she didn’t have her gloves but I did a little change up, just for this comic!)

Silly AVL prison headcanons

The AVL is actually shockingly incompetent. So much so that the only way they could have kept so many dangerous villains at bay was to make them WANT to be there.

The AVL say they're prisoners but they're actually pretty pampered. They can pretty much get away with anything.

For example, the AVL would not have been able to tame a wildcard like Herb if they didn't let him grow and smoke his own pot. They just let him do that.

All the villains like it there, they're like a big family.

In fact, the fact that they were all in prison uniforms while Gru was there was a front. Really they can wear whatever they want, it's just that you know. Gru can't think the people he locked away are free to do whatever they want, they've got a reputation to uphold.

And these headcanons are purely based on observation and totally not because these are the perfect conditions for fanfiction to happen.

Ruby Overkill (Aka Ruby Red) is Scarlet and Herb Overkill’s granddaughter. She was born in France and raised in a city near Lycée Pas Bon, where she attended during her teenage years since her mother worked here as a teacher. She was raised to be a villain and automatically became one as soon as she got the opportunity, having her grandmother as her biggest inspiration. She also became a costume designer for villains and is principally known for her talents in sewing and designing, making her one of the most popular villains in the industry. She met Balthazar Bratt while attempting to steal the Dumont Diamond a few months before Despicable Me 3 took place, which made them reluctantly team up in order to share the gem until Bratt took revenge on Hollywood so he could give it to her for her own benefit. They eventually fell in love and are dating in the 3rd movie of the franchise (fun fact -> Ruby sewed all the disguises that Bratt wore throughout the movie ☝️). Ruby also makes a brief appearance during the end of Despicable Me 4, shown next to Balthazar and the other villains. She and Bratt managed to escape the AVL prison after the fourth movie and even had a daughter named Magenta Bratt. 💜♥️

Gru (and the Minions) check up on them at times. you can hear him and Maxime shouting at each other halfway through the prison

Scarlett and Belle and the other Minions villains make fun of Gru's villains in their downtime. "crazy kids" and all that good shit

Herb actually helped the AVL un-cockroach Maxime... but he also manages to steal a bit of tech to give him at least his extra arms and antennae back

DiscoBug Headcanons🪩🪳💜💚

Note: These are mostly inspired by drawings of @/kermahillway and I'm also trying to keep the character's personalities as "canon" as possible so none of these sound OOC.

Bratt is a Gemini (charismatic, clever, adaptable) and Maxime is a Leo (ambitious and attention-seeking), the compatibility between those signs is high.

Their pet names are Lovebug (Max) and Mon amour (Bratt).

Max introduced Bratt to South Park, the former star quickly disliked it and felt extremely uncomfortable when he noticed that many of the characters sounded just like him. Though, every time someone brings that up, he denies it.

Max watches Animal Planet and sometimes falls asleep on the couch, points if he’s drinking tea.

Bratt loathes modern TV shows, specially anime and reboots. The former media due to its sexualizing of teenage girls and very long titles, the latter due to the constant mischaracterizations of once beloved characters and trying so hard to appeal to modern audiences by appearing “supportive” of minorities.

The only modern show Bratt finds enjoyable is BoJack Horseman, as he can easily relate to the main character, the show’s setting, and Sarah Lynn. Specially Sarah Lynn. Despite all of this, he sometimes watches the shows Max watches just to spend time with him.

Due to being half cockroach, Max gets sugary cravings from time to time. He tries to control himself to avoid gaining too much weight and potential diabetes.

After escaping prison, Max moved in with Bratt per the latter’s insistence. Bratt was NOT happy to find out his BF’s hideout was in the sewers filled with cockroaches. After a few disagreements and discussions, Bratt allowed Maxime to bring some of his cockroaches to his hideout.

Maxime can communicate with cockroaches and puts some of them on spying duty, keeping a careful eye on his enemies without their knowing, hence why he found out about Gru Junior’s existence.

During his childhood, Bratt took power of attorney over his own parents and got emancipated at age 13, right before entering puberty. With the money he made in his career he built his lair and moved there.

Clive got recovered from the AVL storage by Bratt himself. After getting reassembled, he met his creator’s boyfriend and immediately got jealous. He silently opposes the relationship and tries to make Maxime look like an idiot, but this always backfires.

Maxime is lactose-intolerant and gets really mad when someone assumes he eats cheese every day because he’s French.

Bratt is the one who tops during their moments of intimacy, Maxime has tried to position himself as the one in charge, but fails and accept his role as a bottom… not that he complains.

Maxime’s favorite singers is Chappell Roan.

Bratt creates his own choreographed dance moves which are extremely difficult and complex, and he also mixes them with a few martial arts movements.

Explanation: The three men that came up behind Scarlet thought it’d be funny to mess around with her, not knowing who she is or her villain story. The leader of the trio decided to pick Scarlet up as a way to make the others laugh! Now, Scarlet can easily defend herself as presented in the first Minions film, but, they caught her off guard here. So now the men are goofing around, teasing Scarlet like a bunch of high school boys. Scarlet instantly gets angry and yells at them. Unfortunately, they don’t listen and they continue to goof around.

I’ll get started on part three soon! I hope you’re enjoying it so far!

     Chapter 1

                            A Request from Maxime le Mal

                                                                          

It was a bright Saturday morning. In the Gru household, Gru and Lucy were in the kitchen making breakfast for their children. Gru hummed a made-up tune to himself, wiggling his hips while mixing the cheese scrambled eggs on the frying pan. He then moved them to a plate and handed it to Lucy who was cutting different fruits.

“Okay, girls. Breakfast is ready.” Gru announced and placed the 3 plates of scrambled cheese eggs that made a face with cucumbers for eyes, ketchup for the pupils and mouth, and parsley for hair. With Lucy’s bacon and chopped fruit on a separate bowl. And of course, with orange juice as the beverage. A breakfast the girls really enjoyed. They thanked their parents and started wolfing it away.

“And just plain scrambled eggs and mashed fruit for you, little man.” Gru said to his son putting the plastic bowls of food in front of the excited infant.

“Open wide.” Gru said as he scooped a spoonful of eggs and intimidated a plane engine making Gru Jr. giggle and placed it in his mouth. He chewed a few times then swallowed clapped his hands smiling wider in approval.

“Good? Aw, daddy’s so happy you love my eggies.” Gru cooed and continued to feed his son. After breakfast the couple cleared the table and put the dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Gru was wiping the counter when his phone buzzed in his jacket pocket. Gru looked at it before answering it and saw it was from Silas Ramsbottom, he answered.

“Hello?”

“Gru, I must inform you something important. Are you occupied?” Silas asked tensed.

Gru walked away from the kitchen to the open garden door where the girls and baby were playing with Kyle and Lucky. Some of the minions were also playing but with water guns and the water hose. He leaned against the side door crossing his left arm underneath his armpit.

“No, what’s going on?”

“It’s about Maxime le Mal. He requested me directly through prison that he wants to speak with you. About your relationship. From when you were both..younger.” Silas replied cautiously. Gru remained silent for a moment. Since when did Maxime suddenly want to start speaking withGru? Especially about their youth? They had their conversation about the miscommunication about the grade 9 talent show at Lycée Pason Bon and made peace with it by performing “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears in front of the prisoners. Gru and Maxime haven’t bonded since they attended Lycée Pason Bon. Memories flashed through Gru’s mind. From when they were rivals, when they became frenemies to friends, when they became something more, to the day Gru broke Maxime’s heart, and when they were at each others’ throats since. All of it made his stomach twist. He then remembered arresting Maxime at Lycée Pason Bon along with the AVL, hiding himself and his family from Maxime, watching his son be kidnapped by Maxime and turned him part cockroach, and was almost killed while his son watched. Gru knew in his soul he would never forgive Maxime for those actions. His family was his everything and priority before anything else. But if Maxime was willing to talk to Gru about their past, there was a good change there was nothing malicious behind it.

“I see. When can I come down there? I have plans with the family today but I’m available this evening.”

“That is fine. I can make the appointment. Does 7pm work for you?”

“Yes, it does.”

“Then I will schedule you the appointment for 7.”

“Thanks a lot, Ramsbottom. Have a good weekend.” Gru said and hung up. He groaned and sat down on the wooden floor and covered his face with his palms with one holding his phone. Agnes noticed her father and ran up to him while holding a toy ship.

“Hey Gru, what’s wrong?” Agnes asked with worry on her face. Gru peaked through his fingers and shook his head sighing. “Nothing sweetie. I just have some business to take care of for AVL. Nothing bad.” Gru said smiling lovingly to his daughter and stroked her left cheek gently. He decided he wouldn’t tell the girls about this just yet, he wanted to try and keep them out of his work life as much as he could and not give them too much anxiety.

“Okay.” Agnes said smiling lightly and suddenly lunged at her father and hugged him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Whatever is going on, I’m sure you will figure it out.” Gru’s smile spread, always touched with how Agnes could be, especially for her age. He wrapped his arms around her and squeezed her tighter.

“You are a very special girl, Agnes. Never forget that.” Gru said. Agnes nodded, resting on her father’s shoulder and moved her head and body a bit to have more access to his face. “I won’t.” Gru kissed her forehead.

Gru went back inside a few minutes later with Gru Jr to his and Lucy’s bedroom. Lucy was there putting on her usual white earrings looking at herself in the mirror. Styling a turquoise sleeveless collar shirt, white skirt, and platform white sneakers.  Gru did not want to tell Lucy about their past just yet, he thought if he did, she would think he was a huge jerk and blame him for Maxime’s behaviour leading to them to evacuate and hide. Of course, it sounded ridiculous because Lucy would never blame Gru for someone else’s actions.

“Oh, Gru. Are you still good to leave the house at 11 to go to the blueberry picking farm?” Lucy asked excitedly.

“Yes. Hey, Honey?” Gru replied nervously.

“Yes, sweetie?” Lucy questioned now concerned, facing away from the mirror now at her husband and stood up walking to him.

“I got a call from Silas. It’s about..Maxime. Apparently, he wants me and him to talk about our past. From. When we were teenagers. I have to go to the AVL prison this evening at 7pm for a meeting with him.” Gru replied. Lucy’s eyes widen a bit.

“Oh? Wow. Did Maxime tell Silas anything else?”

“No, but it sounds genuine from what I’ve been told. If anything, suspicious happens I’m coming straight home.” Gru replied while bouncing Gru Jr. gently and tickling his stomach making Gru Jr. giggle and grab his father’s hands.

“Alright. And hey, this might be good for you guys. I’m sure both of you will benefit talking to each other about how you both feel.” Lucy said reassuringly. rubbing her husband’s shoulder in a comforting motion. Gru laughed.

“Sure, if that punk doesn’t start blaming me for everything.” Gru half joked.

“Come on, give it a chance.” Lucy said in an encouraging tone rubbing his shoulder faster.

“I am! I am going tonight am I not?” Gru questioned exaggerating his expression, making their son laugh at the sudden change of his behaviour. Lucy giggled and kissed her husband on the right cheek and stroked his head.

“I’m sure everything will turn out fine. You got this.” Lucy said. Gru smiled back.

“Thank you, Lucy.”

6:30pm. Gru was driving to AVL prison. He had a long day, blueberry picking with his family, checking out the goats that were in the property afterwords, playing with the children in the kids’ playground that was in the kids’ area, going to the markets next to it, and stopping at King Burger on the way home for lunch. The whole time the thought of talking to Maxime about their past spoiled his day but tried his best to keep his mind occupied with the activities. Gru arrived at the prison, checked himself in, got checked, and entered to the scheduled meeting room. When he opened the door, Maxime sitting on a chair on one side of a table hands cuffed. A guard was behind him near the wall with his arms crossed behind his back. Maxime looked up at Gru with an expression Gru couldn’t read, he reluctantly sat on the other seat across the table.

“Good evening, Maxime. So, you wanted to see me?” Gru asked anxiously.

“What do you think Gru?” Maxime scoffed, furrowing his eyebrows at the rhetorical question.

“Well, I heard from Ramsbottom you wanted to discuss about, us. About our teenage years. What exactly did you want to talk about?” Gru asked carefully.

Maxime sighed closing his eyes and looked directly at Gru with a neutral yet angry expression.

“About when we were attending Lycée Pason Bon.”

I really liked your drawing about the idea of Maxime having his cockroach body restored (by the AVL?) once he got into prison but still having phantom sensation and pain, could you expand more on that? How does he deal with it? Does he ask for help or is he too prideful to and stomachs it? (FYI if he has more phantom pain than phantom sensation bless his soul because he’s going to snap eventually, that sh$t attacks you out of nowhere and it would be interesting to see how he would react) 👏

I think when the issues first start he’d tell the AVL about it but they definitely wouldn’t be sympathetic - giving him some weak pain medication and telling him to suck it up

I doubt the AVL would manage to completely debug (ha!) him, as he seems to be more cockroach than those hit with the cockroach ray. Instead, they’d probably come up with some sort of treatment to be taken regularly to keep his abilities in line. (Perhaps a procedure of some sort, or a drug, and who knows if the process itself is painful) At first, Maxime would just be annoyed about it, complaining and cursing, but the physical side effects would hit soon as the symptoms, both the pain and itchiness would worsen as the next treatment draws near.

There’s a certain restlessness and a tightness under his skin, something that would get unbearable as the next treatment dose approaches. The itching he’d feel on his skin and phantom bug parts would range from annoying to unbearable; sometimes he scratches himself until he draws blood, and sometimes he can simply tune it out. The physical need to spread his wings is overwhelming, and he’d do anything to be able to do it

The pain first hits him out of nowhere one day when he’s sitting in the prison cafeteria - quick, stinging pain unlike anything he’s felt before. He definitely wouldn’t be able to hide the worst pains, as he’d freeze in place with his face full of terror, but a lesser pain flare would only be noticed by a twitch in his eye or by general fidgeting

I think at first he’d struggle to tell others about the full extent of the situation, instead handling it by being angry, easily irritated and jumpy and perhaps acting out, rebelling against the AVL to somehow try and ease his utter disdain for them and what they’re doing to him. as a punishment the AVL starts ”forgetting” to give him any pain medication from time to time.

Val would quickly notice even the slightest changes in his behaviour and will try to help him the best she can, whether it be massaging his back or keeping him from hurting himself. I like to think of Val, Maxime and Bratt as this trio in prison, so once Maxime’s warmed up to Bratt he’d eventually have both of them taking care of him when need be. I doubt he’d still ask for help, instead relying on them to realize when shit hits the fan. He’s so thankful though, and will try to make it up by doing favors in return

(when night falls and everyone’s locked in their cells, they can sometimes hear soft sobbing from Maxime’s cell - unable to go comfort him through the pain)

On a lighter note… Maxime instinctively watches out to not hurt Valentina or Balthazar with the sharp spines of his cockroach appendages, still forgetting they’re no longer part of him

Minions: The Rise of Gru- details, trivia, goofs, random notes (Pt. 1)

When I hyperfixate on a certain aspect of a work (usually a ship), I'll end up hyper-fixating on everything about it. That is how we ended up here. I feel I've noticed quite a few details in this movie that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere, so I've decided to make this to document them for myself and others, if they are interested.

Things I'll mention will range from 'duh, that's plastered right in front of us' to 'that was onscreen for less than a second'. I'll also provide context on some parts of the narrative, trivia from concept art, some things that don't make much sense, and of course over-analyse some parts to draw conclusions that may be a stretch but are nevertheless fun to think about. Overall, I want to acknowledge that every frame of this movie was crafted by talented artists and animators, and it makes me happy to see them add in little details that may not be noticed by casual viewers.

Anyway, that was long, and I don't blame you if you didn't read it. I'll be starting from the beginning of the movie. Come along with me on part 1 of my perceptions.

Disco billboard & 'Bicentennial 1976' billboard showing Uncle Sam wearing platform shoes. Bicentennial refers to the 200th year anniversary of the creation of the US (1776). Platform shoes were also very popular during the 70s, and pretty much every major character in the movie wears some form of them.

From when we start following young Gru, the movie takes place over a few days, probably from Wednesday 28th January 1976 to Saturday 31st January 1976 (a definite; when the clock struck midnight and the Chinese New Year began. This was also the Year of the Fire Dragon). The Zodiac stone theft probably took place in early January.

Animators closed Belle's eyes during her intro so they couldn't be seen through her glasses. Motive=up the coolness factor.

One of the AVL guys knocks another out of frame trying to grab her.

One of the AVL guys in the car gives no f#cks and eats a donut while chasing her.

Belle's golden chain belt is a literal 'ball-and-chain', like the prisoner's restraint.

This guy falls backwards.

There's an unbothered gray cat sitting on the trashcan on the left.

The V6's subterranean headquarters is on the bottom 9th floor of the complex.

Side note: The Vicious 6 were a highlight of the film for me, despite their screentime only amounting to about 10-15 minutes (sans Wild Knuckles). I definitely think they were under-utilised. Still, I take what I can, and they do have interesting background details. I will be delving deeper into them in another post using their official music playlists.

There are only 5 seats around their table, even though they haven't betrayed Wild Knuckles yet; Svengeance is just standing by Jean-Clawed. Why are there only 5 seats.

Big 70s energy with the character designs. The jumpsuit, faux furs, leisure suits, biker jackets, bell bottoms, platform shoes, afros, sideburns, shag haircuts, the staches, the whole shebang. I recommend this wikipedia page if you're interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970s_in_fashion

I probably don't need to point out the punny names, but I will anyway. Belle Bottom= Bell-bottoms/'Flares'= popular flared 70s jeans. Glitter and a stylish font for her name.

Stronghold never once opens his hands onscreen- the metal gauntlets are probably a permanent fist. His name shatters the figurative glass around him. A stronghold is defined as a fortified place protected from attack. He is pretty much confirmed to be Mexican.

Jean-Clawed vibes with Nun-Chuck.

Nun-Chuck= nunchucks= East Asian weapon good for blunt force attacks, traditionally made out of wood. Her name here is also in an identical font to 'The Nun' horror movies.

Svengeance has got spikes everywhere (the wheels of his skates also have spikes on them), but even he doesn't skimp on safety pads. Sven + Vengeance. Sven= he is Swedish.

According to concept art, his name was originally Magnus.

His character is a homage to Moonpie from the film Rollerball, also with a rollerskating theme.

His name font resembles one of those Varsity flags, so he's a bit of a jock.

Jean-Claude + giant lobster claw= Jean-Clawed; also doubles as a cool reference to his voice actor JCVD, but this was actually just an awesome coincidence.

He stands on his chair and the table to catch the map.

Name is colored according to the flag of France; he is French.

The buttons on his arm prosthetic are glowing, probably indicate when it is being controlled by him. Arm is most likely missing, even though this seemed to be forgotten a few times (namely the rat form).

Missed opportunity to foreshadow what would come next with WK in this shot; a few sneaky looks behind his back could have been added.

Belle's choker has a similar design to Wild Knuckles' arm bracers; perhaps she was inspired by him?

Svengeance puts his hand on Nun-Chuck's shoulder (aww). JC also nudges her in excitement.

Svengeance jumping up and down like a giddy child (watch it back; it's kind of hilarious).

Nun-Chuck thanking the heavens.

The dragons on the map have tiny lil arms and legs.

An UNgoof; the jetpack and hat WK threw on the ground DON'T disappear.

Spikes through the eye, the head, the heart. Ouch.

Starting from the top, clockwise: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig (I know, the horse doesn't look like a horse). The Zodiac stone itself is likely made of jade, very spiritual. Chinese jade symbolises purity and morality. Very ironic.

You can see heads other than the dragon, most clearly the snake and monkey (?).

WK calls the gold guardians 'tchotchkes'- a decorative trinket.

Belle looks at Jean-Clawed and smiles. He holds onto his hat so it doesn't blow away in the wind (doesn't seem to be much of a problem 30 seconds later though; bowler hats were actually well-known for being fairly stable in windy conditions ).

Nun-Chuck also turns the wheel and smiles menacingly.

The rope tied into the shape of a noose.

I think Belle and Jean jumped into the back row behind Nun-Chuck to be in these positions, while Svengeance went onto the trunk. I mention this because I had no idea how they were standing like this for the longest time based on what we saw of the car.

DESPICABLE ME HEADCANON TIME!!!

personally i think the conditions in the AVL prison are really good for the inmates and that the prison would have more of a focus on kind of rehabilitating their inmates over just containing them

obviously none of the main villains of the series would be allowed out of the prison without any kind of supervision, because they are SUPERVILLAINS and - even after being 'rehabilitated' - they would still be pretty dangerous.

one thing i think they would do is have group therapy sessions to help towards rehabilitation and everyone seems fine with them.

bratt likes the therapist and thinks shes nice, vector takes part but finds it kind of boring, perez thinks the sessions are pleasant but he doesnt really need them, valentina just goes because maxime has to go though she also doesnt really need it, the villains from minions come and go as they please - theyre all fairly calm and dont need the therapy as much as the newer guys.

then theres maxime.

maxime. does not like therapy. he doesnt like the therapist. he hates everything about group therapy and thinks its a waste of time, he has to be tied down to his chair for him just to be there

out of everyone in therapy, maxime probably needs it the most, because he really really needs to work on:

his temperment

his obsession with murdering gru

his vendetta against literally everyone

his ability to hold grudges for way longer than he should be able to

not solving his problems via murder or violent death threats

his violent tendencies in general, actually

his crumbling mental health (he is actually insane)

he doesnt think he needs to work on any of those, though

i think that after a while of group therapy and group activities and such, maxime would start liking a few of the other inmates

his favourite thing to do is mess with people, his usual target would be bratt, but overtime his constant targeting of him would make bratt kinda grow on him

theyd become friends and start tormenting vector instead because hes easy to mess with

meet: Dr Bingo! a therapist in the avl prison! 'Bingo' is just a codename she chose for herself, because she thought it sounded fun and would make her less intimidating - as well as be a good protection for her actual name and identity.

bingo covers both group and one-on-one therapy sessions, as well as interventions and group activities. shes literally just there for the inmates to rehabilitate -- she also handles the i mates getting visits. regulars that visit the dm villains are:

gru and dru, for bratt - dru and bratt are best friends, and bratt likes to give dru a variety of tips and advice for dru to become a better villain, while dru brings bratt bubblegum to fuel his poorly hidden addiction

gru and antonio perez, for eduardo perez

just gru for vector because his dad is also in prison

gru for maxime. not because he likes rubbing it in that maxime is in prison - which maxime thinks hes there for - but because he just likes checking in on him

gru likes to regularly check up on his many enemies to see how they are, he also likes to hear about whatever the hell they might be trying to scheme against him (none of those schemes will come to fruition, they arent gonna break out). visiting his enemies is one of his favourite things to do on his days off :^)

despite doing a lot of work in the prison, shes underpaid for what she does. the worst part of her job is having to deal with unnecessarily aggressive and violent inmates, namely: maxime.

most of her one-on-one sessions are with maxime when he gets arrested, and it takes a very long time for him to actually participate in either kinds of therapy. the most she gets out of him for the first few months are death threats and aggressive verbal warnings (only because maxime is always like tied to his chair during therapy, for bingo's safety)

all of the other inmates seem to like bingo a lot more than maxime does, as theyre all on fairly friendly terms with her

bratt really likes her, though, and is always happy to see her :^) theyre friends!

i could write a lot more here about bingo, like how she has a girlfriend or why she decided to become a therapist in the first place, but this post is already super long so. thatll have to wait for another time. toodles!
