‘‘These fourteen tracks are both a great introduction to artists you may not have heard and more important, a call for additional investigation of the Buenos Aires new improvised music scene. Highlights here are many, visits by Catalonian pianist Agusti Fernandez performing a chamber jazz piece with saxophonist Pablo Ledesma and bassit Mono Hurtado and Austria Christof Kurzmann in duo with trumpeter Leonel Kaplan. Kaplan is an interesting find, he can skate the minimalist sound and work a kind of Steve Lacy tribute in trio "Plaza y la vía" with Pablo Ledesma on soprano saxophone and Mono Hurtado at the double bass. The sounds shift often, like the monster free jazz piece "Improvisation 0681" that can melt snow by saxophonist Miguel Crozzoli, bassist Juan Bayon, and drummer Pablo Díaz and the electric guitar freakout "Primer Jugo Bovino" by Ramiro Molina and bass saxophonist Luis Conde. Conde is a sort of mashup between Mats Gustafsson and Colin Stetson. Conde's partner, pianist Fabiana Galante is heard on three tracks with her stunning prepared piano attack. There is much to explore and expand your tastes with here. New music and musicians, plus possibly the first free improvisation bandoneón recording "Fulgor al bies" on included.‘‘

Location: Diamniadio, near Dakar, Senegal, West Africa

Within the framework of the Senegal Emergent Plan (Plan Sénégal Émergent-PSE), the Ministry of Communications of Senegal has adopted a policy to stimulate the development of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) sector. The national ICT strategy aims to promote the creation of an attractive space for investment, as well as access to ICTs for the society in general.

With this in mind, the Government is promoting the construction of the Digital City project, an urban hub in which digital services are the main driving force for economic growth. This new hub, 35 km from Dakar and close to the new international airport (AIDB), aims to place the digital economy at the heart of the new administrative and business city of Diamniadio.

The total investment is 70 million euros, of which 61 million is financed by the African Development Bank and 9 million from the Government of Senegal. The objective is to create a digital platform in an area of 25 Ha in the Diamniadio economic zone, with ICT office spaces for the public and private sector, including international companies. The first phase includes the design and construction of 33,000 m2 of offices, incubators, teaching and research centres and a Tier III data centre integrated into the area.

IDOM has been contracted to develop the Master Plan of the digital park, the Basic and Detailed Architecture and Engineering, as well as provide technical assistance on site during the construction phase.

The project is currently under construction. This first phase is expected to finish in December 2022.

Experiència trepidant

 És encoratjador i alhora emocionant constatar l’embranzida que està prenent la música contemporània o de nova creació –ni els mateixos nous creadors es posen d’acord amb la terminologia a utilitzar- a Barcelona. I amb això no celebro aquesta o aquella estètica en concret, sinó el fet que s’estigui programant, de manera regular i amb criteri, música experimental de tall acadèmic i voluntat artística (etiqueta més descriptiva i igualment plena de contradiccions) creada als nostres dies i que, per tant, respon a qüestions i inquietuds dels nostres dies, ja siguin aquestes musicals, conceptuals, filosòfiques o vitals. 

L’interessant cicle Sampler Sèries programava el 22 de febrer l’estrena de l’obra Frec 3, signada per Hèctor Parra i creada entre ell i el conjunt de músics que el pianista Agustí Fernández, un dels grans de la improvisació lliure mundial, va seleccionar. Entre els cinc han creat, en vàries sessions de treball, una obra semi-escrita i semi-improvisada, en la qual la partitura marca una estructura temporal on s’han d’esdevenir diferents moments instrumentals, texturals i dinàmics. 

Frec 3 és la darrera peça d’una trilogia marcada per la relació entre música escrita i música improvisada. Una relació que està agafant consistència a Barcelona, amb un important nucli d’improvisadors i compositors que cada vegada se senten més atrets els uns pels altres, com és el cas de Parra i Fernández, a partir dels punts en comú que perceben en les seves maneres a priori oposades de concebre la música, i que els porten a tenir coses que dir-se i ensenyar-se. L’obra, com el mateix Parra explica, “emergeix” del treball entre compositor i intèrprets, una “simbiosi expressiva treta d’una escolta atenta”, i s’esdevé com a tal només en la seva interpretació, en la qual els músics posen la carn a l’esquelet de la partitura. 

Els punts cardinals de Frec 3 són la idea de fregament, un dels gestos primordials que permet la generació del so, i el contrast dialèctic que s’estableix entre aquest i la seva absència. A nivell idiomàtic, Parra i els seus intèrprets exploren múltiples registres del so, dels més simples als més complexos, mitjançant multitud de recursos instrumentals que generen sons que potser mai abans havíem pogut sentir. La combinació entre escriptura i improvisació, entre control i llibertat, aporta un punt més de tensió al treball i obliga a compositor i intèrprets a pensar de maneres diferents al què estan habituats. Un molt bon punt de partida per a arribar a idees noves i segurament sorprenents. 

Tenint en compte tot aquest substrat, la recepció de Frec 3 no pot ser menys que multidimensional. En la dimensió conceptual, l’exploració de la idea de “frec” em deixa amb la sensació que la resposta no és ninguna, o que ho són totes, que ve a ser el mateix. L’oposició que planteja Parra, expressada a l’inici de manera clara i intencional -piano, percussió i violoncel (el frec) contra flauta (l’absència de frec)-, es va diluint i es desactiva conforme la peça avança. Perquè l’aire es materialitza com a frec en la flauta; els martells del piano a alta velocitat i els cops a les plaques del vibràfon esdevenen frec discretitzat; en aquest context els harmònics dels instruments es poden percebre com un tipus de frec no matèric, únicament sonor; i tot el conjunt de frecs, els que ho són i els que no volen ser-ho, superposats capa sobre capa, suavitzen la seva percepció i s’acaben integrant en un tot rugós i continu. 

Estructuralment, l’obra es construeix a partir d’un esquema que direcciona les intensitats i regula les textures sobre d’un patró temporal definit estrictament. Això, com alguns comenten, permet donar continuïtat a les diferents parts i conduir de manera efectiva tant les transcicions entre seccions com la dinàmica global. Per altra banda, requereix dels músics una comunicació d’idees permanent, obligant-los a generar certs moments a partir de la seva pròpia expressivitat. El resultat és una música amb una direccionalitat clara i ben construïda, formalment consistent, i alhora oberta a la reacció en temps real dels intèrprets, l’interplay propi del jazz, el qual genera una intensitat única i irrepetible. 

A nivell interpretatiu, Fernández pren la direcció del conjunt des del piano. Sempre és difícil saber si els músics estan fent allò què han de fer, ens manquen referències, però l’energia i l’interés no decauen en els més de cinquanta minuts de música, i això vol dir alguna cosa (i bona). Aconsegueixen també la multiplicitat de timbres que demanava Parra, mitjançant l’exploració sonora dels seus instruments amb múltiples recursos poc convencionals, encara que cada vegada menys. I la paleta textural és àmplia i està ben modelada, no només per les diferents veus en acció i les maneres com es relacionen, sinó també pel propi timbre, el qual possibilita o inhabilita uns ambients sonors determinats: dels més rugosos i rasgats als més harmònics i reverberants. 

Frec 3 representa una experiència trepidant: cinquanta minuts d’intercanvi entre músics i auditori, amb el compositor com a mitjancer i patidor de cos present, entorn a l’exploració de dimensions sonores diverses i sovint extremes. I també suposa un esglaó més en l’expansió de l’espai i l’interés pels sons que pensen i generen les actuals generacions de músics amb els qui tenim la sort de poder conviure.
