A popular adage states that “a lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.”
In this day and age of social media and up-to-the-minute news, it has never been faster for a lie to travel around the world — and it’s been even harder for the truth to try and catch up.
That was the case last week, when Al Jazeera spread a malicious libel about Israeli soldiers raping Palestinian women in Al-Shifa Hospital during the IDF’s ongoing campaign against entrenched Hamas forces there, before quietly removing the story and trying to silently bury it.
On the morning of March 24, Al Jazeera Arabic’s principal news presenter, Elsy Abi Assi (who is no stranger to antisemitism and denial of Hamas atrocities), interviewed a Gazan woman by the name of Jamila Al-Hessi on live TV. She claimed that Israeli soldiers operating in Al-Shifa Hospital were raping Palestinian women and brutally murdering other Palestinians sheltering in the medical complex.
These allegations soon spread like wildfire on social media, with popular anti-Israel accounts picking up the story and disseminating it to their large English-speaking audiences.
Then, that night, Yasser Abuhilalah, an Al Jazeera columnist and former director, tweeted that a Hamas investigation into these allegations had concluded that they were not true, and that Jamila Al-Hessi had justified her on-air deception by claiming that she had exaggerated her claims in order to “arouse the nation’s fervor and brotherhood.”
According to some analysts, Hamas had decided to issue a rare public denial of these claims since its dissemination among Palestinians in northern Gaza was having the opposite effect than was intended: Instead of producing enmity against Israel, these allegations had caused Palestinians to flee the area in fear for their safety.
By the next day, Al Jazeera had removed references to Al-Hessi’s claims from its online platforms, but never formally retracted these libels, even though it had uncritically aired them in the first place.
However, by that point, it was too late. The damage to Israel’s reputation had already been done.
In less than 24 hours, millions of people had already viewed Jamila Al-Hessi’s lies on social media and, despite the denial by Hamas itself, continue to do so through a variety of anti-Israel accounts.
As of this last Thursday alone, the story had been viewed 2.3 million times on the X (formerly Twitter) account of Middle East Eye, 918,000 times on the X account of “investigative journalist” Sulaiman Ahmed, 405,000 times on the X account of “human rights activist”/Hamas supporter Ramy Abdu, and over 305,000 times on the X account of alternative media outlet The Cradle.
Some (including Sana Saeed, a journalist affiliated with Al Jazeera) have even gone so far as to voice skepticism of Hamas’ discrediting of Al-Hessi’s story.
The allegation of rape by IDF soldiers in Al-Shifa Hospital is not the first lie about Israel and the IDF that has been spread since Hamas’ October 7 terror attack and the subsequent Israeli invasion of Gaza.
However, in this case, it was not spread by a lone social media activist or a fringe news source, but by a news organization that enjoys a veneer of respectability among both news consumers and media outlets around the world.
Despite it serving as an official mouthpiece of the authoritarian Qatari regime, and being accused of echoing Hamas talking points, Al Jazeera is viewed as a trusted source of information about Israel and the Palestinians during the current conflict, as well as over the past several years.
In 2022, HonestReporting uncovered that Al Jazeera had been cited by 16 “top-tier news outlets” 116 times in Israel-related news stories, with most never mentioning the Qatari media organization’s inherent bias.
Also, if not for Hamas deciding that the libel about rapes in Al-Shifa Hospital was not in its best interest and issuing a denial of the allegations, it is highly likely that Al Jazeera would have continued to run with this fabrication as a trusted news story.
In this age of the 24-hour news cycle and instant access to news from around the world, Al Jazeera is serving as a valuable tool in Hamas’ propaganda war, spreading misinformation and sullying Israel’s image around the world at record speeds.
Al Jazeera’s malign influence on the views of social media users is concerning. For mainstream media outlets to rely on it as a source for Israel-related stories is downright journalistic malpractice.

Good morning, afternoon, or evening! Thank you for taking the time out of your day or night to read my post.
About an hour ago, I posted a short summary about how Mirabel and Hiro would make a perfect 90 Day Fiance couple. As such, I wrote a timeline for their time on TLC.

Mirabel and Hiro, 22 years old, star in season 2 of 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days, filmed in 2017 and aired in 2018.
Mirabel and Hiro, 23 years old, star in season 1 of 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way, filmed in 2018, and aired in 2019.
Mirabel and Hiro, both 23 going on 24 years old, marry on January 26, 2019.
Mirabel and Hiro, 24 years old, star in season 2 of 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way, filmed in 2019 and aired in 2020.
Mirabel and Hiro, 25 years old, welcome their triplets on November 27, 2020.

On the topic of fandom history and the AvA fandom changing over time:
Have some trivia:
The first AvA fic on ao3 was posted in September of 2017. It’s also the only fic that lists the fandom as simply “Animator vs Animation” instead of “Animator vs Animation (Short Film 2006)” from what I could find.
The second AvA fic on ao3 was posted in October 2018, over a full year after the first one.
As of this post (November 22, 2022), there are currently 296 AvA fanfics on ao3...and only 13 of them were posted before The Showdown aired. That’s fewer than 5%.
Those 283 post-Showdown stories were all posted within a time period of just over two years...while those original 13 were spread out over slightly more than three years. That’s a jump in averages from about 4 fics a year to about 141 fics a year, after Showdown aired.
The first multichapter AvA fic on ao3 was orphaned and abandoned by its author, with only the first chapter having been posted. It was also the first AvA crossover fic posted to ao3, listing both Pokemon and Henry Stickmin in the fandom categories alongside AvA itself. The author wrote it as part of the Infinite Loops Project. It was also the only AvA crossover posted before Showdown aired.
Currently only 32 of the 296 listed AvA fics are crossovers. 15 of them are crossovers with Henry Stickmin.
The Dark Lord was not tagged as a character in any of the 13 pre-Showdown fics
...which means that all of the 23 listed fics featuring the Chosen/Dark ship were written after Showdown aired. This is currently the most frequently-tagged pairing, with Green/Orange in second place at a mere 10.
7 of the original 13 fics featured shipping, though I couldn’t verify if they were actually shipfics or if they just had the ship in the background.
8 of the AvA fics listed on ao3 were posted anonymously
25 of the AvA fics listed on ao3 are orphaned
“Fluff” is tagged in 48 of the currently listed fics, with “angst” tagged in 43. “Fluff and angst” is only tagged in 15.
Of the 49 AU fics currently posted, 15 are specified as being canon-divergent AUs, 9 are human AUs, 3 are fantasy AUs. (Not accounting for any overlap.)
Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Chosen all have multiple character tags listed in the search filters, because back when many of these fics were posted, the tag-wranglers hadn’t gotten everything sorted yet. Because of this, early posters were using tags such as “The Chosen One - character” or “thesecondcoming” or “stickfigure Purple” or simply “Yellow” instead of the now commonly accepted “Green (Animator vs Animation)” or “Orange | The Second Coming (Animator vs Animation)” for example. Since then, the tag wranglers have been able to fix many of these tags so that they all link to the same categories...but not all of them. Poor Yellow is still tagged as a Pokemon character instead of as the stickfigure in 17 fics (with the most recent having been posted in December 2021), and Chosen got tagged as the Fallout character as recently as April 2022.
Only 11 of the 296 currently listed fics are written in a language other than English. Those 11 are all written in Chinese, with 10 of them all being part of the same series.
Despite the prevalence of Minecraft in AvA fanfics, Minecraft is only tagged as a fandom alongside AvA in 4 of the currently listed fics.
Victim is tagged as a character in 56 of the currently listed fics, the first of which was posted over a full month after Showdown aired.
Meanwhile King was first tagged in a fic over three months after his first appearance in Parkour, but now, a year and a half later, has 58 fics with his name attached.

Coldplay at Olympiastadion München | 15th August 2024
It happened! I saw Coldplay and got to live the dream once again. Here are some things I remember from my concert adventure.
Okay so let me tell you about my 5th ever Coldplay concert. I haven't been in such a huge venue since 2017 and so I was a little bit nervous when I realised that the Olympiastadion fits around 65.000 people. But I wasn't alone because I had Marta and Andrey with me and we met many nice people along the way.
14th August - The day before the concert
On the day before the concert I left home at 8:30 and it was a mess from the start. Deutsche Bahn couldn't decide whether I was 3 hours late or just on time or whether the train would be overly full or not. It kept changing over and over again but in the end I actually only had 15 minutes delay. On top of that, it was very hot for all three days, so everything got more exhausting. I didn't have troule finding the hostel, though, because it was next to the one I stayed in last October. I had a six-bed-room with other girls and all of them knew Coldplay! Three girls from Croatia were even going to the concert as well but they had seats so they wouldn't be queueing. Another went to see Adele that same evening.
Marta, Andrey and I met up in the evening at a burger place to discuss plans. Actually Marta experienced quite an odyssey, because her car had broken down with a flat tire. Marta had been volunteering for Love Button the entire day where she had been giving out food for people in need. She brought an entire bag a full of Coldplay-themed bracelets with her. I got the golden-black one that says "Birds". Even the waitresses got some. We decided that we would be queueing for front row on the left side where Jon is, although Andrey and Marta would have enjoyed to go to the B-Stage. They agreed because Andrey has already been there once and Marta had another shot with early entry on Sunday. Andrey would be queueing for early entry tomorrow and Martha and me would be queueing for general admission.
Tumblr media
15th August - Queueing
The night before the concert I had really horrible dreams and kept waking up because of these nightmares. But in the morning I actually felt surprisingly rested and took a tram to get to the stadium at 10:00 a.m. Munich is a building site. There were barriers everywhere and I was so confused about how to get to the stadium, which I could clearly see in the distance. Still there were dozens of fences in between! I kept walking a road with stage trucks and several security guards but I got to the right entrance eventually, where Marta was already waiting for me.
We were really fortunate because we stayed in the shade of a couple of trees for the entire day. As it was very hot and sunny it would have been a nightmare to queue in the full sun. We were still waiting for Marta's friend Stella to get a notification about whether she has a standing ticket. Martha won a ticket by volunteering, but she didn't know which type. Many nice people were with us. There was a mother and her daughter Sarah, who were really nice. At some point a girl from Twitter arrived with her dad and we all realised very quickly that he needed gluten free food. So we all started providing him with snacks, tomatoes and more. Nobody had to be hungry. At 1:00 p.m. the merch stand opened. It was a tent right across and Marta bought a poster and a t-shirt for herself and fetched me the tour book as well. Her hostel was nearby, so she brought the merch there for safekeeping.
Marta was actually the local celebrity for the entire Olympia park. She even made it to official Twitter accounts because she looked like a mixture of a hardcore Coldplay fan and a disco ball. She had a glittering dress and a self-made grey jeans jacket with a painted hot air balloon, Mylo Xyloto ornaments and many patches with several different bands, planets and more. So she was definitely the star outfit-wise. People even started asking her questions about the concert because she looked like she was the most knowledgeable person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chaos at the gates
The only pain in the ass was the organisation of the entire thing. Nobody put up a barrier on the side so that people from the left started pushing in. Everyone got up way too early because they didn't realise that the entrance was delayed by 30 minutes. That is because the band was really late, as Marta said, their plane had been delayed and they actually didn't start soundchecking until after 4 p.m. Too late, because this is when we should have been let in. From Andrey we knew that they hadn't been let into the stadium either, so there was no way that they would open the general entrance anytime soon. Meanwhile it was too late, people had started getting up and getting excited and squishing together. It was really uncomfortable for the last hour of queueing.
There were two girls in front of us who somehow had decided to go to the toilet before all the excitement started and who had a very hard time joining us again. Same with Stella, who actually got a standing ticket and had to make her way through the crowd to us. The worst thing was that they suddenly opened the gates at 5:00 p.m. without any warning. They didn't even say "Get your tickets ready" or "Prepare your bags" or anything, they just opened the gates without a single word. Suddenly everyone started pushing and I didn't even have my phone in my hand. It was a mess!
Once you got through the security check and the ticket control you had to go even further to the edge of some stairs. The stairs were really steep and led to the inside of the stadium. Security didn't let us go down there by ourselves since it was too dangerous. They assembled a crowd before leading us down. This was very stressful and you could see all the early entry people flocking to the stage down there and also the mass of people in front of you. We had decided that we wanted to get to section GA1 which is basically Jon's side, but when we arrived down there they had only GA3 open which is for the catwalk and the B-Stage. I asked security why they didn't let anyone into GA1 and they replied "We don't know" and "We won't let anyone in there". One minute later they suddenly decided that they would, surprise! So we were actually lucky to get into the right section after all.
When we arrived at the corner of the catwalk and the a stage, where we wanted to be, there were already so many early entry people. Andrey had not managed to save a space for us and he also wasn't facing the A-Stage but the catwalk. This is how it happened that Marta, Stella and Andrey were on the catwalk side and I was in the same corner but facing the A-Stage. I just didn't want to let that spot out of my sight, because I really wanted to have that amazing view of Jon and this is where he would be.
The people around me were actually quite nice. There were two older women in front of me. They seemed really calm and friendly and then there was a daughter with her mother also in front of me to the left, who seemed a bit less approachable. Behind us to the left was a group of women, who got very drunk and already started yelling and shouting and laughing very loudly even before anything started. During the support acts they made so much noise that we all got annoyed.
The security guy in front of us was actually really nice, he handed out water, snacks and even some love buttons, which is how I got a second green love button. The support acts were Wilhelmine, a German singer, and Maggie Rogers. They were doing a good job! It was a lovely start and during Maggie Rogers the woman in front of me had decided to risk the bathroom journeylike me earlier, so I had a front row spot for a while. Meanwhile Marta, Stella and Andrey somehow got further and further away from me so I couldn't even talk to them anymore. But I decided to stay where I was because nobody would have let me in their spot now anyway. Meanwhile the crowds on the hill were assembling and the stadium got more and more crowded.
Tumblr media
Servus! Here we go!
Meanwhile the band was delayed. The girl next to me, Hannah, had already been to several Coldplay concerts this tour. She said that the band would probably come on at 9:00 p.m. and she was right about it. We could see underneath the catwalk through a gap in the fabric. So we hoped to see how the band made their way to the B-Stage at the beginning of the concert. But first there were two people announcing the band and raising awareness for environmental projects that are funded by our tickets. They have been several dance battles on the kinetic dance floors to generate energy, the wristbands are all being recycled and there are stations to refill your water bottle, to name only a few things.
As it is with all concerts, only fragments of it stay in my memory. It's just such an extraordinary experience with crazy levels of adrenaline that it all kind of evaporates once it passes. Too many people, sounds and views - it all just merges into a big blur of everything. I remember Higher Power coming on and how I was suddenly all joyful and jumping and I don't even know why, because I wasn't that excited before. Actually I had felt rather tired and kind of chill, but it all changed once the band came on.
Sure enough Jon was just in front of me and for the first time I could also see Chris really clearly. But the thing with the new stage layout is that you can't really see Will or Guy when they are not right in front of you. I don't know whether it's just higher or they are further back, but I had a better view at the AHFOD-tour when it comes to seeing more of the stage itself. This is not to complain because I still saw so much of Jon and Chris especially, and sometimes even Guy. Only poor Will was hidden all the time, except when he came walking to the B-Stage. Instead I got to see A LOT of confetti. It flew all over us so many times: little squares, stars, hearts. They were like the most beautiful rain and it got everywhere.
Tumblr media
Jon was awesome! He looked so happy and youthful and energetic and sometimes sassy. As usually, he was showing off his skills, smiling to people or being very concentrated while playing. This time it was such an overflow of lights and effects and people everywhere that I only managed to catch his attention once in a quiet moment. I think the other times he might have seen me, but he only smiled and nodded at me once. That's okay, I felt so happy because he did. In general I felt as if it was 2017 and I was the small overjoyed Jonnygirl all over again. I don't know, something about seeing Jon just makes me so incredibly happy. But he now has a cute little grey patch of beard in addition to the familiar ginger beard. Still the same silver necklace and a watch on his wrist. Same old Jon, I hope to see him again soon.
Tumblr media
I got so so many beautiful photos from this concert! Because Coldplay concerts are very brightly lit everywhere, most of the pictures actually came out sharp and usable, which is something new. I used all of my prisms that I had taken with me and also the "moon goggles" that they gave to us which make little stars or hearts from the lights. Even the sections that I thought I would find silly, like The Lightclub with the alien masks or the duet with Angel Moon, were actually funny and enjoyable. It all kind of works in the moment. Overall, I think the AHFOD tour had a much better setlist. Although the elements are different now, I still feel like the message and the overall spirit stayed the same, which is why I enjoyed the show in its entirety.
Tumblr media
But what really, really got me was that they suddenly started playing God Put a Smile Upon Your Face [x]. I didn't even expect this and so I started screaming like no tomorrow and totally lost it. It was definitely one of the highlights of the entire evening. Also People of the Pride was really good. I remember looking at the green lasers during Clocks, which was new for me, because I knew the red lasers and now they returned to their green origins. Somehow the lyrics started to get to me this time and I closed my eyes in that moment. There was no sadness though. A Coldplay gig is not for being sad, it's just for pure joy and jumping, dancing and shouting the lyrics out. It's for enjoying life and forgetting everything that is remotely bad just for these two hours.
Tumblr media
I felt a bit like a newbie because I didn't really know what was going on til the point that I didn't recognise Chris is always stopping one song just to dork around. I didn't even know that they had a song called Good Feelings - this is how well informed I was! I was a bit sad that they didn't play anything from Everyday Life, except Sunrise, but then again they left out so many songs.
I feel like they extended the section they had during Us Against the World during AHFOD. Now they had Chris making up songs for random people shown on camera, which was really sweet. At the C-Stage they played Sparks and I really loved that. Chris' voice was awesome and I really like this version. They did play Don't Panic without the rest of the band during the Songbook section. The second big surprise was when suddenly a guy stood on the main stage during Fix You. My confusion didn't last for long because Hannah next to me freaked out completely. It was Shawn Mendes! He did such a great job playing guitar and singing together with Chris.
Tumblr media
When they played feelslikefallinginlove they actually wore the sparkling jackets from the music video. I liked how the song sounded live - but I didn't realise it meant the end of the concert. Honestly, it didn't even feel so long! But then again I was already so exhausted from jumping around, especially without having a barrier to hold on to. They just bowed once and were gone in the blink of an eye.
Tumblr media
Home, home - but not without a proper goodbye
It took me a while to realise it was over. I stuffed confetti into my bag, said goodbye to the people around me and then Marta came to look for me. We took pictures with all this confetti and Marta even made a confetti angel on the floor. Then we decided to pay Shaheem a visit. Shaheem is a roadie responsible for the Xylobands. They have become much more sophisticated since I've last had one, now they can draw shapes and patterns. Shaheem is a very sweet person. He hugged us and we had a nice chat where we praised him for his work, then Marta suggested him to try some Radler ("If I like it, you'll get a setlist on Sunday!"). He also gave us some beautiful plecs. The guy next to me got a setlist from another roadie and let me take a picture.
Tumblr media
We even met some of the people from the queue again. Sarah and her mother had been at B-Stage, they enjoyed the concert although her mother fell due to being pushed at the entrance and injured her knee. The other older woman who had been queueing with us hadn't gotten to the GA1 section because of the bad organisation. We also met some twitter people again at the water refill station. Only Andrey and Stella were somehow missing. It was difficult to find them again because we got out at the opposite entrance and had to make our way over a fence down a hill to get to them.
Stella and her parents took Marta and me to the hostel with their car, which was really a lifesaver. This way I could pick up the tour book and avoid the crowds on public transport. Marta and I hugged and parted ways and I got to the tram and to the hostel alright. On my way back I already looked at some of the photos and got excited because they seemed to be really great!
At the hostel I decorated the entire bathroom with confetti, drank approximately two more litres of water and ate bread in bed while looking through the photos in awe until 2 am. It all felt good and everything was alright. Coldplay magic never fails to work.
How fortunate I am that I could see my heroes again! It's been eight years since my first concert on July 1st 2016 in Hamburg. Back then my life was very different and I went through a hell of a time. Only one thing never changed: When Coldplay is in town, there are breaks in the chaos of time. The beautiful sides of humanity become visible when people come together to celebrate together and enjoy life. I hope to witness this again.
See you soon, Coldplay!

Ex-NIGHTWISH Member MARKO HIETALA Joins DELAIN On Stage In Switzerland
Former NIGHTWISH vocalist/bassist Marko "Marco" Hietala joined DELAIN on stage during an open-air concert this past Saturday (July 8) at Z7 Summer Nights in Pratteln, Switzerland to perform the latter band's song "Your Body Is A Battleground". Fan-filmed video of his appearance can be seen below.
Back in October 2017, DELAIN and Hietala joined forces for the "Danse Macabre" tour. The trek saw DELAIN share the stage with their longtime friend and collaborator who contributed to most of DELAIN's records with guest appearances.
In a recent interview with FaceCulture, DELAIN founder, songwriter and keyboardist Martijn Westerholt spoke about the differences in the singing approach of the band's new frontwoman Diana Leah and that of her predecessor, Charlotte Wessels. He said: "Well, first of all, [Diana's] voice. I like her character. [She has] so much control, so much control… It's also a very friendly voice. And [when I first heard her singing], I could imagine that on DELAIN music. And then I got back the material later, and I was actually astonished and surprised how much it fitted. [Someone said] she has a very similar voice to Charlotte, and partially I totally agree with that; there are some characteristics that are similar. But I also think that people didn't… We have released three singles [with Diana so far], and [people] have not heard her complete capacity in singing. She's very good with soft versus power, [the] contrast [between the two]."
Elaborating on what sets the two vocalists apart, Martijn said: "Charlotte is more rough, which gives Charlotte a lot of character. It's a more rough voice, and that's not a negative thing; no, on the contrary, that gives it a certain quality and character. Diana is more refined. And that makes it different. So I'm totally not saying that, 'Oh, this one is better' or 'That one is better' — no — but it is different. And, of course, indeed, there are also similarities."
DELAIN's first album with Leah, "Dark Waters", arrived on February 10 via Napalm Records.

How an A-10 Warthog won a "kill" mark of a cow 🐄
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/19/23 - 12:00 in History, Military
In addition to all A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft in the U.S. Air Force fleet, an A-10 Warthog with serial number 81-994 may be among the most exclusive for a simple reason: it is the only aircraft we know to boast the mark of a slaughter, or "kill", of a cow.
Attributed to the 107th "Red Devils" Fighter Squadron, of the 127th Michigan National Air Guard Wing, at the Selfridge National Air Guard Base, the A-10 in question was seen in official photos of the U.S. Air Force displaying a yellow marking there slaughtering a cow next to other numerous weapon markings released in combat.
The marking of the slaughter of the cow dates back to at least 2017, when the commemorative painting of World War II in red and green of the A-10 of the 107th was launched to honor the 100th anniversary of the Red Devils. In 2018, the A-10 cow killer even appeared on a commemorative flight over the beaches of Normandy on the 74th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

There are many rumors about the mark of the slaughter of the cow since it was first seen in U.S. Air Force photos. According to a report at The Aviation Geek Club, ground troops moved to an enemy village in an "unrevealed location" after an assortment of approximate air support with the A-10 where they left a cow "in pieces by 30 mm 'hot freedom" of the iconic Gatling GAU-8/A seven-barrel cannon of the A-10.
So, what's the story behind this unique 'kill' marking? According to Penelope Carroll, spokeswoman for the 127th Wing, the A-10 "unbelledly" killed a cow during aerial operations during the deployment of the 107th Fighter Squadron in Iraq.

Although minimal information about the particular mission was available, Carroll referred additional questions to the U.S. Central Command.
About 350 aviators and a dozen A-10s of the Michigan National Air Force were sent to Iraq and Syria in April 2015 as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led fight against the caliphate of the Islamic State group, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Speaking about the deployment at the time, Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters praised the effectiveness of the approximate A-10 air support capabilities. That said, blowing up cows was probably not what they had in mind.

Luis A Toledo, Florida inmate V11539, born 1981, incarceration intake (this time) in 2018 at age 36 (after more than 4 years of pre-trial jail confinement), sentenced to life
Murder, Obstruction of Criminal Investigation
In January 2018, aaying he believed Luis Toledo showed no remorse for killing his wife and her two children four years before in Deltona, a judge sentenced the former gang leader to three consecutive life sentences in prison.
Toledo, 36, was convicted in October 2017 of second-degree murder for killing his wife, Yessenia Suarez, 28, and two counts of first-degree murder for killing her children, Thalia Otto, 9, and Michael Elijah Otto, 8.
Suarez and her two children were reported missing Oct. 23, 2013. Their bodies have not been found. Investigators have found only blood spots belonging to the girl.
Circuit Judge Raul Zambrano had no choice on the first-degree murder counts but a term of life without parole. A non-unanimous jury verdict spared Toledo a possible death sentence.
Toledo faced up to life for second-degree murder. He also faced up to five years in prison for tampering with evidence. Zambrano gave him the three consecutive life sentences plus five years on the evidence tampering to run consecutively as well. The judge gave Toledo 1,465 days credit for time served.
Toledo sat wearing the standard orange-jail jumpsuit and showed no reaction in the courtroom at the Volusia County Courthouse in DeLand. Toledo occasionally leaned over to talk to one of his attorneys.
The jury voted 10 to 2 to recommend a death sentence for Toledo. However a Florida law passed the year before required a unanimous recommendation  for Zambrano to have the option of sending Toledo to death row.
But the judge noted that the jurors were unanimous on a telling point: Toledo showed no remorse.
An investigator testified at the trial that Toledo vowed he would never tell them where the bodies were. After the guilty verdicts Toledo had tried to waive mitigation, saying he did not want his lawyers, Michael Nielsen, Jeff Deen and Michael Nappi, to try to convince the jury to spare his life.
Toledo said during a hearing that part of the reason for his wish to waive mitigation was that he did not want some of his family history aired in public. Nielsen said at the hearing that history included Toledo's mother and father each apparently having adulterous affairs while he was young and that his mother may have used cocaine while she was pregnant with Toledo.
Toledo also said that he believed he would have been safer on death row where it would have been harder for members of his former gang, the Latin Kings, to get at him. Toledo, a former high-ranking member of the gang had testified against its former leader during a trial in Orlando. Toledo also said he was convicted of killing children and of killing a woman, crimes the gang does not approve of.
But Toledo changed his mind after the judge told him that if he refused to allow his attorneys to present mitigating evidence then he would have to appoint an independent counsel to do so.
Toledo is no stranger to the Department of Corrections. He served eight years for a crime in South Florida. After doing his time he ended up in Central Florida where he met Suarez.

Armageddon to wet lettuce: The phrases that defined 2022
Agence France-Presse, 5 December 2022
Tumblr media
PARIS — A year of extraordinary upheaval, from the war in Ukraine to catastrophic natural disasters, AFP looks at some of the words and phrases that have defined 2022.
ARMAGEDDON
With the war in Ukraine and increasingly strident threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin, the specter of nuclear warfare is stalking the globe for the first time in decades.
"We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis" in 1962, US President Joe Biden warned in October.
Experts warned of the most dangerous situation they can remember, with fears not limited to Russia: North Korean nuclear saber-rattling has reached new heights, with the world bracing for a first nuclear test since 2017.
LONDON BRIDGE
Tumblr media
At 6:30 p.m. on September 8, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died, bringing to an end the longest reign in British history and sending shock waves around the world.
For 10 days, Britons paid respects to the only monarch most had known, following a carefully choreographed series of ceremonies.
The program of events, famously codenamed "London Bridge", set out in minute detail every aspect of the protocol -- down to BBC presenters wearing black ties.
In the event, she died in Scotland, meaning special provisions came into force -- Operation Unicorn.
LOSS AND DAMAGE
Tumblr media
World leaders and negotiators descended on the Egyptian Red Sea port of Sharm el-Sheikh for the latest United Nations summit (COP27) on tackling climate change.
After a fractious summit, widely seen as poorly organized, a deal was clinched on a fund for "loss and damage" to help vulnerable countries cope with the devastating impacts of climate change.
Behind the institutional-sounding name lies destruction for millions in the developing world.
The COP summit was hailed as historic but many voiced anger over a lack of ambition on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
WOMAN. LIFE. FREEDOM.
Tumblr media
The chant screamed by protesters in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman arrested by the Tehran morality police.
Protesters have burned posters of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and women have appeared in public without headscarves, in scenes scarcely imaginable before the uprising.
The demonstrations have lasted 3 months and appear to pose an existential challenge to the 43-year rule of the clerical regime.
BLUE TICK
Tumblr media
The tiny blue tick (it's actually white on a blue background), which certifies users on Twitter, became a symbol of the chaos engulfing the social media platform in the wake of its $44-billion takeover by Elon Musk.
The mercurial Tesla boss announced that anyone wanting the coveted blue tick would have to stump up eight dollars, only to scrap the plan hours later.
A month on from the takeover, Twitter's future remains up in the air, with thousands of staff laid off, advertisers leaving, and its "free speech" platform hugely uncertain.
ROE V. WADE
Tumblr media
In an historic ruling, the conservative-dominated US Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 "Roe v. Wade" decision that enshrined a woman's right to an abortion.
The Supreme Court ruled that individual states could restrict or ban the procedure -– a decision seized upon by several right-leaning states.
Protests erupted instantly in Washington and elsewhere, showing how divisive the topic remains in the United States.
The overturning of "Roe v. Wade" became a critical battle in the US mid-terms in which candidates in favor of abortion rights won several victories.
QUIET QUITTING
Tumblr media
One of the "words of the year" in Britain and Australia, the phrase refers to doing the bare minimum at work, either as a protest against your employer or to improve your work-life balance.
The trend, which has sparked debate about overwork, especially in the United States, appears to have surfaced first in a TikTok post in July.
"You're not outright quitting your job but you're quitting the idea of going above and beyond," said the post which went viral, drawing nearly a half-million likes.
WET LETTUCE
Tumblr media
As Liz Truss approached the end of her chaotic and short-lived tenure as British prime minister, the Economist weekly mused that her effective period in office had been "roughly the shelf-life of a lettuce."
The tabloid Daily Star leapt on the idea, launching a live web cam featuring said vegetable -– complete with googly eyes -- next to a picture of the hapless Truss.
Her premiership lasted just 44 days and featured a mini-budget that collapsed the markets and generated extraordinary political upheaval. In the end, the lettuce won.
TOMATO SOUP
Tumblr media
Environmental protesters seeking to draw attention to the role of fossil fuel consumption in the climate crisis hurled tomato soup at Vincent Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" painting at London's National Gallery in October, touching off a series of similar stunts.
Since then, activists have smothered mashed potato on Claude Monet and glued themselves to works by Andy Warhol, Francisco Goya and Johannes Vermeer.
For some, the campaigners are heroes bravely drawing attention to the climate emergency.
For others, the attacks are counterproductive and lose force by becoming commonplace.
A4
Tumblr media
Protests erupted in China, initially over COVID restrictions but later widening to broader political grievances, posing the greatest threat to the Beijing authorities since 1989.
The demonstrations became known in some quarters as the "A4" protests as protesters held up blank A4-sized sheets of white paper in a sign of solidarity and a nod to the lack of free speech in China.
