Totally delighted to represent the "I have worked in service roles too long to find coffee shop AUs romantic" stance in this fantastic piece about the trope and how it explores ideas about public space by Alexandra Lange.
(I've never worked in a coffee shop or any other food service role, to be clear! But I have been flirted with—sometimes pretty aggressively—by bazillions of men in my two decades as a mutuel clerk, and idk, customer/employee is not a dream fic scenario of mine lol.)
Also delighted to appear here alongside @earlgreytea68, I'm glad coffee shop AUs have a top-notch defender. 🥰

fanfic writers might prefer the cozy setting of a coffee shop because there’s a baseline familiarity, so characters’ interpersonal dynamics, rather than the minutiae of the setup, can be explored.

“The mall is a central component of what I call the youth control complex,” says Victor M Rios, MacArthur Foundation professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. “They’re seen in stores as either suspects or too poor to be treated with proper customer service, even when they have money. The mall also teaches white teens that they are premium consumers, as they witness their Black and brown peers pay a skin tax upon entering the mall.”

FINISHED MEET ME BY THE FOUNTAIN!
I've never read an architectural history before, so this was extremely interesting. The author goes back to the origins of the mall in the 50s, and discusses its socio-economic purpose throughout the decades, as well as the architecture that makes the mall what it is, and how all of that has resulted in this wonderful generational nostalgia.
Would definitely recommend it if you're a fan of things like Defunctland - historical looks at the American Dream, consumerism, and the constant nostalgic attempts to create a wonderland version of your youth. The mall very much spent its' first few decades as architects' attempts to create a peaceful, idyllic shopping experience (explicitly geared towards the white 1950s housewife stereotype) and it's interesting to see how that's either crumbled over time or adapted to new generations and grown to incorporate youth, minorities, and, well, anyone who isn't a white suburbanite with 2.5 kids.
It did feel like kind of a dense read, though that's possibly because I hadn't read this genre before and there were lots of new people and concepts to digest. Overall, I think the author did a pretty decent job of making the subject matter accessible to the average reader!

Episode 482: Someone you hate
Recovering vampire Barnabas Collins hopes that mad scientist Eric Lang will be able to free him of his curse once and for all. Since wicked witch Angelique, who put the curse on Barnabas in the first place, has come back to the great estate of Collinwood, Barnabas found a twelfth century Sicilian talisman with the power to protect against witches and gave it to Lang with instructions that he was…

oh, so the reason why the 50s was a ~golden age~ where the expectation became that you would just get a single-family home with a white picket fence no matter what, was literally bc the government was giving people* money and good mortgage deals. hm. yeah. and socialism is totally evil and the government should never help people and we all just need to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps...
*white people, specifically, bc the suburbs were racist as hell and even if POC could get the government benefits, builders would probably refuse to sell to them. this sounds horribly naive but somehow america (and canada too) continue to shock me with how racist they've been so recently.
