Just a quick note from your friendly neighborhood bookworm/indie author
if you use kindle for the majority of your library, they will be shutting down the function that allows you to download your files and transfer them via USB on the 26th of February. Which doesn't sound like a huge deal, but this also means that if a book is taken off Amazon for any reasonâlike it being bannedâthey can scrape it off your kindle as well. So maybe backup your library?
Edit: as an indie author I feel like I should make a small note that this is not an excuse to say âfuck Amazon Iâll just pirate my booksâ. Please donât do that. No oneâs reaction so far has been that but Iâm begging you not to react that way. That doesnât hurt Amazon it hurts authors.
Some alternatives are
- check and see if the author sells their books on other marketplaces. Hint: any not enlisted on Ku are probably wide
- check your library. If theyâre not at your library request them.
- if all else fails, reach out to the author. I have 100% hunted down a way for my book to be available to a reader that couldnât access it for whatever reason. And Iâd do it again.
Just for the love of đ§ donât pirate them.

LAWRENCE, NEW YORK || DECEMBER 4, 2023
the kingâs market stood at the very edge of lawrence; a small town within a big city .. . where the paint peeled off old brick buildings, and faded signs creaked in the december wind. yet, despite its weathered exterior, the supermarket was lawrenceâs unexpected gem ( as was shawndaâs boutique, toniâs kitchen, minnieâs nails, the sullivan community college, that dunkinâ on mccarter road, brunch box, and express deli ) â a place that managed to thrive against all odds. its large windows glowed warmly under flickering neon lights, as if the store itself were proud of what it held inside.
you skid to a harsh stop â your brotherâs old navy blue bicycle croaked with each pedal, it practically begged to be thrown into a junkyard â and immediately lose balance. you caught yourself before the tumble could come; the bottoms of your ragged, black vans scraping at the concrete and your thumbs accidentally brushing against the bikeâs bells . .. . the scratchy ringgg alerted the cluster of pigeons, causing them to flap away, and made the mother pushing her big-enough-to-walk-on-his-own toddler side-eye you.
âmorninâ . ..â you raised a shy hand in apology, leaning your brotherâs aged bike against kingâs dried bike rack. you snatched up your bundle of reusable tote bags from the screwed-on basket and dug into the jumble for the bicycleâs lock; the new one ordered from amazon. âo .. kayyyy,â you sung to yourself, wrapping the chain link over a rack pole. hearing it click and seeing that it remained in place, you let out a deep breath .. relieved.
kingâs market is quiet, but itâs a comforting quiet, broken only by the hum of old refrigeration units and the faint rustle of a distant shopper. sunlight filtered through the small, high windows, casting a soft glow over the shelves and illuminating specks of dust floating lazily through the air â kingâs market was different from what was expected. though the aisles were narrow and the checkered linoleum tiles were cracked and crumbled and lifting out of place, each row and shelf was organized perfectly.
a faint scent of earth and herbs drifted from the produce section, where vegetables sat stacked in bright, fresh columns. local greens glistened with a crispness that rivaled any high-end market over in port charles ( you believed ), their colors vivid against the worn wooden bins. tomatoes were perfectly ripe, their skins taut and glowing, and bunches of parsley and dill leaned together like old friends, filling the air with a sharp, green fragrance.
in the far back, there was a small bakery nook filled with golden loaves, round bagels, fluffy croissants, beautifully-decorated cupcakes and soft cookies made with old-fashioned love, managed by antonella cardenas. beside it, a mini flower-shop section . .. . youâve made it your business to circle by during your early morning grocery-runs.
you ripped the bud from your ear and let the wire hang down your front, dangling and brushing against the puff of your dark-green winter jacket. âtev?â you gave the worktop a knock, not too loud but hard enough to be heard throughout the mini-kitchen. tevinâs butcher counter was simple but spotless, manned by an old man who knew every cut by heart, arranging steaks and chops with the precision of an artist.
âtee-tee?!â still, nothing or no one came to you â you knew the mini-kitchen was open. the lights were on and the faucet was running. âiâve got some .. fucked-up, jacked-up, cracked-up shit to tell you, tev.â you were careful with your curses, not giving them their regular intensity and over-exaggeration. âtevi?! itâs work shit!â crickets. that usually worked. you stopped knocking on the cold counter and dropped back onto your heels. âi know you can hear me, tevin,â spoken under your breath and while you were unraveling your wired-headphones.
and you started onward . .. realizing that it mightâve been a good thing tevin wright hadnât come out to the register. you werenât the best at lying on the spot. you had a little tell of it; while for many, it was laughing or evasive smiling or rapid blinking or coughing and clearing their throat, avoiding eye contact; like looking up at the ceiling, or those self-soothing gestures or being too fidgety with their fingers and clothing, you overused defensive phrases: like âhonestly,â âto tell you the truth,â or âbelieve meâ.
with szaâs âsweet novemberâ playing faintly in your ears .. you stand in the center of a narrow, softly lit aisle; shelves of hand-drawn packaging designs, others in plain jars that let the rich red or green hues of their contents do the talking. your hands hovered over two jars â one labeled locally-made marinara, the other a small-batch pesto. your fingers grazed the cool glass of both as you considered them, your full brows knit in thought. itâs just .. fucking pasta sauce, you could hear your motherâs grating voice. pick up a jar and go.
you lifted one jar, squinting at the label, as though weighing the memories each flavor might stir up. a faint smile tugged at your lips as you remembered how your father would make a whole affair out of selecting ingredients, debating over spices and sauces as if it were a high-stakes decision. are you kidding me? this is ridiculous. you are just like your father. half-insult.
you set it back down, you reached for the other choice, your gaze thoughtful as you further debated which would give your evening dish that extra something â szaâs song of past experiences fading into chappell roanâs love me anyway â you set that jar back into place and grabbed the third option. the one with the hand-drawn design. it was cute and you made a mental note to peel the wrapping off before use.

PORT CHARLES, NEW YORK || DECEMBER 4, 2023
the kitchen of the cassadine estate was a masterpiece of traditional russian design, combining rustic elegance with a sense of historic charm. the kitchen was a vast, open space dominated by an enormous central island, topped with dark, veined marble that has been polished to a mirror-like finish. cabinets of deep, rich wood line the walls, their surfaces gleaming under the sparkle of hanging iron chandeliers with exposed filament bulbs that cast a golden light over everything.
every detail exuded craftsmanship: the hand-carved moldings, the wrought-iron handles on each cabinet, and the aged brass fixtures that gave the room a touch of vintage grandeur. pots and pans of shined copper hung in neat rows from a ceiling rack, their warm glow offset by the cool, tiled walls in muted creams and grays, which add a subtle neatness.
a massive stone hearth sat against one wall, its archway adorned with intricate, hand-laid tiles. within, a wood-fired oven emitted a faint, smoky scent. to the side, a marble-topped counter held a selection of oils and aged vinegars kept in glass jars, each label handwritten in russian script.
large windows near the farmhouse sink overlooked the estateâs gardens, letting in natural light that poured across the butcher-block counters and casted shadows on the tiled floor. this floor â worn but immaculate â was ice cold underneath your soaking wet polka-dot socks. in one hand, your pair of vans ( fiona mccall, the estateâs lead-housekeeper, and her team were stern and meticulous in ensuring that the grand halls, ballrooms, libraries, staircases, and more importantly, the floors remained pristine ), your phone with the letterboxd app still open and dropped into a shoe, in the other hand; your grocery tote-bag you were to keep in the employee mini-fridge.
you faked a bad cough, in attempt to fake clear your throat â âsorry, goodmorning .. mr. cassadine.â â still, you grabbed his attention. spencer cassadine stood at the central island with his elbows resting on the chilled surface, his head lowered, lost in thought. the weight of family expectations pressed heavily on him, and the stillness around him offered a brief moment of respite .. before hearing your voice, of course.
your presence filled the room with a sense of . .. . play and awkwardness. spencer studied you: your winter jacket over a simple, faded-once-graphic t-shirt, wrinkled mom jeans, hints of gold jewellery, your box-braids loosely tied back with baby pink crochet yarn, giving you that .. ârelaxedâ look, he guessed you were going for. it wasnât effortless, it was messy. spencerâs gaze switched to your shoeless feet .. as did your own eyes â you took one large step to the left and landed behind a counter, only letting your upper half show.
âfiona-ms. mccall, i mean,â you began, your shoulders tense and your arms cramping from the hanging shoes and bags of groceries, âand those-sorry, your floors, sir. sheâs serious âbout âem, that one. i mean, her team too. theyâre like .. so serious about thâ floors .. i hadâta walk around in my socks-â you stopped before continuing on. seeing him stand there with that signature blank, cold look on his face only shut you up ( you opted not to speak on how you dropped your dunkinâ coffee on the way here ) and drove sickness deeper into your heart.
you looked away from a moment, taking a shaky breath. âi should, uhm ..â you faced him again, âsorry, mr. cassadine .. my arms are, like, getting ready to snap off. like, actually.â
spencer watched you waddle off into the shared-employee closet. he straightened a bit, his fists carefully drumming at the marble surface as he waited for your return â though, he wouldnât admit to anyone that he had been âwaitingâ for you. after a moment, he took a step aside and tilted his head slightly, giving himself a clear view into the employee closet; with its array of lockable, highschool-style cell phone lockers . .. . you were shoving your winter jacket into the available top shelf, struggling on your tip-toes.
when you landed on your heels again, spencer took his previous position; leaning against the central island â âso, um . ..? sorry, but why are you back here, anyways?â you called out, but gave spencer not even a second to process the question. you peeked your head out of the employee closet, braids no longer tied back but cascading over your shoulder. âsorry, this is your familyâs kitchen. you have, uhm .. every right to be back here. sorry.â you disappeared into the employeesâ closet again, leaving spencer to be alone and to .. somewhat try and understand you.
âyou apologize a lot?â he asked, his voice steady and even. not a question, but more so a statement.
dropping your hands from your braided bun, you moved away from the wall mirror and out of the closet saying: âtrauma response,â unapologetic and freely, fixing your white button-up and fresh apron, âi canât help but feel bad for a person literally every-time i-â
âwhat?â a deep grumble. too forward. heâs not one of your friends, you reminded yourself. you canât speak to him like heâs on your level â rather, like youâre on his level. âsorry, mr. cassadine.â again with the sorry.
spencer huffed and in a low tone, âyou can stop with the âmisterâ.â not a request, but an instruction. unsure of what to say next, in bad habit; âiâm sorry?â his eyes narrowed and you bit down on your lower lip, stopping yourself from the âmâ word and the âsâ word. âi actually get asked about that .. like, a lot. the âsâ word, thing. iâm kind of working on it. kind of.â
âkind of?â
âmhm-yeah. takinâ it day by day . .. . kind of. you know what i mean?â no comment, no further movement. your shoulders drooped, but you were okay. you were in an okay mood this early, december morning even after dropping your dunkinâ coffee. you had on new, warm socks and had beabadoobee in one ear â âyou still use ..â with a hand, spencer gestured toward his own ear, âwires?â
you stared down at your phone, the adapter snug in the charging port; âpictures of usâ by beabadoobee at its first full minute. the slander on âwired headphonesâ was so unnecessary and so childish. without thinking: âiâm sorry?â you paused a moment to recollect and what looked to be a smile began tugging at spencerâs lips. âi mean-who doesnât? .. who doesnât like wires?â
âmany people.â
a weird chuckle, âwhat? literally so many people like wires. i donât-? what is so wrong with wires?â
âwhat isnât wrong with wires?â
âi donâknow? thatâs why iâm asking you âwhatâs wrong with wiresâ?
âeverything.â and that was that. spencer had the last word, though you disagreed completely. silence fell for eight seconds, maybe nine, before he asked; âwhat are you, uh ..?â shoving his veiny hands into the front pockets of his dark jeans, âwho are you listeninâ to, anyways?â
âbeabadoobee.â you paused the song. âher beatopia album. itâs so good, seriously.â a part of you considered sharing the unused earbud, but that would require closeness and sharing wired headphones was an intimate gesture, a chance to bond with another â that couldnât be done with airpods or those chunky beat headphones. âiâll come over to you-you just stay there.â
spencer met you halfway around the marble island, going against your statement without a second thought. the gap between you and spencer was intentional, on both ends. he kept himself from standing too close, as did you. âokay, so, if beaâs not your cup of tea, or, uhm, you donât like her sound or somethinâ .. justttt, uh, donât say anything-yâknow?â spencer listened intently, hands at his sides and the soft skin of his fingers rubbing the stitches of his dark jeans. âsorry, that wasnât exactly âpoliteâ-â
âplay the song.â
âmhm. yeah.â your index finger tapped down on the rewind button .. pictures of us started, the acoustic guitar entrance soothing and inviting â âthe words take awhile to, um . .. actually begin, sor-nope.â spencer smiled faintly at your effort, giving a light thumbs up. you appreciated the gesture, warmth slowly growing within your chest, causing you to chew the inside of your cheek.
with the pad of your thumb, you dragged at the progress bar, watching the thin line skip forward in small jumps, stopping at the right mark. you let your finger rest, satisfied as beaâs lyrics finally filled the air.
âiâve watched that.â right under the music widget had been a notification from letterboxd: w-katie02 liked your review of the elephant man ( 1980 )! âitâs one of my favorites,â he continued, almost hesitant. âyeah?â a little, genuine smile as your fingers brushed the edge of your phone. âyeah.â spencer ended there, seemingly restricted; as if heâd just given something away he hadnât meant to.
âdo you have letterboxd?â just the most important app on your cellular device. well, one of them, certainly. by the glint in your eyes, spencer could feel the unmistakable love you held â because for you, it was so much more than just a platform; it was like a never-ending journal of emotions, insights, and memories. your perfect profile was filled with entries â some thoughtful and delicate and passionate, others scattered and messy and raw, like snapshots of your silly life in film. youâd spent many hours logging your thoughts after each movie, capturing how it made you feel, who youâd watched it with, what kind of day it had been . .. . you never missed a detail.
âwhatâs a .. letterboxd?â you unlocked your phone in under a second â âitâs like goodreads, but for movies,â you said as you clicked the app open. spencer, though confused and having never heard of goodreads, kept his lips locked and waited for your explanation: âletterboxd is immediate, like no other platform.â you held out your phone and he took hold of it; mindful of the need to avoid physical contact.
âsocial media in a way thatâs like-â spencerâs finger swiped up and you inched inward, lifting onto your tip-toes to watch as he did so. â-ultra safe and super cuddly. thereâs no politics, close-minded straight men, or mentions of global crises, the sad stuff essentially, yâknow? .. well, okay, actually-i guess, if youâre on the wrong side-â
âthere are sides?â
âso, itâs . .. . yeah.â
âmm.â â pictures of us faded into donât get the deal â your gaze shifted between his working finger and his face. you didnât know what heâd been doing exactly, but you paid attention to how his eyes zipped side to side under his eyelids and how his brows lightly scrunched and how he sniffled softly every now and again and how his tongue darted out to bring moisture back to his lips. and in this very moment, this quiet moment of, what you assumed was nothing, he looked . .. . approachable. it surprised you how easily he fit into this small moment, his attention focused on something so trivial.
spencer cassadine â extra polished, effortlessly confident, someone who belonged to a world youâd only ever seen from a distance â handling your phone as though you and him were two equals. the four fingers of his right hand nearly covering every collected sticker.
to you, he really was someone you had heard about in passing, the kind of person with a surname people spoke of in hushed tones, heavy with history. he seemed so different up close, less like a distant idea of wealth and reputation, and more like just .. a person, with his own subtle quirks and quiet intensity â it felt like a rare glimpse beyond his guarded expression, easing the image youâd carried of him.
you tried not to overthink it, letting yourself just be here, grounded by the purr of the kitchen and beabadoobee in the background and the heat of his presence . .. .
then came a muffled ping; spencer returned your phone and retrieved his own from his back pocket. that dry, somber demeanor was back and whatever that quiet moment was, was long gone. you clicked off beabadoobee â your eyes searching his face for a hint of what could have been troubling him. âcan i make you something?â a sweet offer. a sweetness that spencer cassadine had not known, or been at all familiar with.
he blinked up from his screen. âwhat?â
âhave you eaten breakfast yet?â
spencer shook his head.
âfood always helps.â just as you pivot and circled the counter, he spoke: âiâve already taken too much of your free time. iâve interrupted your routine,â clearly trying to brush off your sweet offer, though his stomach growled in response to the idea of food.
âitâs fine.â
âi canât let you ..â
âseriously?â you stopped in your tracks, barely smiling. âcome on, seriously. câmon. i can prepare somethinâ quickly. i donât mind, really,â you reassured. and spencer felt a flicker of thankfulness at your inclination; you werenât offering to impress him or because he was who he was, but out of the kindness of your heart. âthank you.â
with a nod, you moved to the large refrigerator, opening the door with purpose. you pulled out a few eggs and some vegetables, your movements deliberate and calm. the rhythmic sounds of your chopping and sautéing completed the kitchen.
as you worked, spencer was leaned over the counter .. having just downloaded letterboxd and putting together his own movie lists. he found your account, remembering the username in the top left corner, and added a few of your saved movies to his new âto watchâ list. âhow long have you been cooking for?â
âmom put a knife in my hand at five, so iâd say since then,â you replied, glancing up briefly and laughing seeing the concerned look on his face â you werenât joking. âitâs therapeutic,â you said then, eyes down again. âi find real comfort in it-a quiet escape, like my letterboxd. plus, feeding people is a nice way to show you care.â
your words struck a chord with him. he could see how the kitchen was your sanctuary, just as it had become a momentary refuge for him. âi can understand that,â he admitted, his gaze wandering to the window, where the light falling snow touched down and melted. âiâll find my âquiet escapeâ.â
âyou donât have one now?â
âunh-unh.â
âthat should be impossible. what do you look for when you need a moment?â
âi walk around and sit in silence.â
âthat sounds awful.â
âitâs not the worse thing ever.â
âno, i guess not. but what do you love to do? like really, truly love to do-imagine, âkay, itâs your very last hour alive .. ând youâre trapped in a dome with only thâ materials needed for your number one hobby, what is it?â
spencerâs mind went blank for a few seconds. he didnât write, he didnât read, he couldnât draw, he couldnât paint â âi like the gym.â
âokay .. cool.â you smiled and scratched at an eyebrow, âum, but seriously. whatâs the hobby?â
â.. nothing.â
â-shit.â
âyeah.â a hopeless shrug. âi never got into an art or instrument. nothing that requires serious skill and talent.â spencer turned off his phone and held his hands together, fingers interlocking.
âwell . .. a hobby doesnât have âta require serious skill or talent. and it doesnât necessarily have âta be an art.â you told him, matter-of-factly; knowing and practical. âlike bird-watching. donât haveâta be in your sixties to do it.â dropping your spoon onto a paper towel, you went for one of the five spice cabinets and dug inside. âi collect cool things.â you were a collector of very fine whatchamacallits, doo-dads, and trinkets; which ranged from mail stamps, pink paper clips, buttons of all shapes and colors and sizes, unique beer bottle caps, and stickers â your junk-sticker phone case is evidence.
âwhat-like rocks?â
âsometimes. marbles too.â
âmarbles?â
âmarbles.â firmly, âmancala pieces.â
âwhatâs a mancala piece?â
âyâknow ..? mancala?â
âwhatâs mancala?â
âwhatâs mancala?â in disbelief, you released a defeated sigh and shook your head. âi have a mobile version, i can explain the game after this.â you stretched your arm over and with a knuckle, tapped down on your phone screen; you had little over an hour left. âjusâta confirm, i will be explaining the game.â
no objection.
âbut back to hobbies-â spencer heard your voice and instantly flipped his phone back over. â-whatâs an instrument youâve wanted to play?â piano, there was no need to think about it. the first time spencer had heard a piano, the melody was soft and almost a whisper, beckoning him away from the clamor of the gala crowd. he drifted toward the sound, drawn in as if by a spell â
â he saw the grand piano in the corner of the room, its sleek black body gleaming under the warm lights. a man was seated there, his fingers gliding over the keys with such fluid grace that spencer could hardly believe it . .. . and in that moment, he felt an overwhelming urge .. not just to listen, but to touch the keys, to know how it felt to draw out a sound so moving and pure. but he was only a child, and the instrument seemed impossibly large, as if it belonged to another world.
and years passed .. life had filled up with other obligations and distractions, and the closest heâd come to a piano was brushing his fingers over the keys of one owned by a close friend or at another sprawling event. but every now and then, when he heard the low throb of a piano in a restaurant or wherever, he felt that same pull, that longing that had begun in the corner of a crowded room so many years before, waiting patiently for him to return.
âpiano,â he answered. though he had no idea what happiness looked like for him, he was sure that starting with piano would make that discovery easier â he was so incredibly detached from himself and the more you spoke to him, you could tell.
âi know you can learn,â you said, kindly.
âi donât have the time.â
ânot even five minutes? you can download an app and start slow .. memorize piano stuff.â
âyou have a piano app?â
âno, but i can find one for you.â his dark eyes brightened imperceptibly. âi bet thereâs a lot. thereâs an app for everything .. unfortunately .. kind of.â you mumbled the last bit, plating his breakfast with care. â.. here. simple, but itâll help.â
in grabbing himself clean silverware â for the first time, he felt the possibility of letting someone in, even if just a little.

Froggie's (Almost) Very Productive Day 2: Electric Boogaloo
So, the plan was to have my one productive day and then rest for however long the consequences of post exertional malaise decide they want to take.
But I needed to bring the working key fob back to the tire place so they could calibrate the tire pressure sensors. So, the day after my day, I napped until about 4pm and summoned the last bit of energy I had to finish this task.
After they fixed the sensors, I looked out over a beautiful sunset in the Discount Tire parking lot.

It's weird the places you find beauty sometimes.
I was about a mile away from my family's favorite pizza place. We've been going there since I was a tadpole. So I decided to grab a pizza as my Thanksgiving meal.

I didn't realize that the day before Thanksgiving would be just about the busiest night of the year. And they have the world's worst parking lot, half of which is a steep hill, and they didn't have enough spaces.
Google Maps has flattened the appearance of the hill. That thing is nearly a 40 degree angle. If anyone with a sports car wants a pizza, they are going to scrape their paint trying to get it.
So, I tried to park around back. Unfortunately someone was exiting the back parking lot and there is only one lane.
So... I backed up... into a pole.
I was going extremely slow and I barely tapped it. But I still felt pretty stupid. Thankfully no scratches or dents.
I finally find parking and head inside.
The Italian kitsch is always a "welcome" sight.

Every time I look it takes me like 10 seconds to figure out the configuration of his face. I find it is best to look at the mustache first, and then orient yourself from there.
I head to the counter and she asks for my name, assuming I am picking up a phone order. I explained I was just "dropping in" and then she gave me an "oof" face. The wait was nearly two hours. I told her I could get a few things from the grocery store and return for my pizza. She charges my card and I hop back in my car. Just as I was about to exit the parking lot of doom, a customer from Angelo's starts yelling at me.
"You forgot your card!"
Clearly my brain fog is starting to get to me. I left my damn bank card on the counter. So I have to exit the parking lot, drive into another parking lot, turn around, and then park again. I retrieved my card and headed to Nice Schnucks.
The GPS took me on a wild journey to the NS. I've lived in this area for 40 years and I had no idea some of these roads existed. I'm sure it was 3 minutes faster or whatever, but I think I would have preferred a route with streetlights. Unlit streets give me a bit of anxiety. Especially if I don't know them.
I get to NS and realize I was about to have the same problem I did at the pizza place. It was the night before Thanksgiving and the entire neighborhood was scrambling to get food for the next day.
I filled up on soups, frozen pizzas, and I got a few more bottles of my beloved soda. There is a Shirley Temple flavor I have yet to try. (Update: A rare Fitz's fail. Tasted like cough medicine.) And then I headed to the madness of the self-checkout.

I managed to kill about an hour, but my legs were getting wobbly. I really shouldn't have gone back out this soon. And I probably should have just headed home after the car was fixed. But I feared if I didn't do *something* special for Thanksgiving I would probably have a difficult time being all alone.
I head back to Angelo's. This time I was able to park in front and avoid hitting any poles.

The pizza was cooking and needed another 15 minutes. So I sat at a table and worked on finishing writing my to-do list for my trip to Florida. I was trying to tell Amazon that, yes, I do want a tiny bottle of shampoo to comply with the TSA security theater. But, no, I do not want 8 tiny shampoos.
Oh, did you know they charge you a "9/11 tax" when you buy a plane ticket?
Spirit Airlines has a pretty funny alternative name for it...
"After 9/11, the U.S. implemented the â9/11 Security Taxâ, which was a fee of $2.50 each way of a trip on top of the price of a plane ticket. In 2014, the 9/11 Security Tax was increased to $5.60 each way. So, for a round trip this fee would cost $11.20"
We are literally still paying for 9/11. And there is no evidence the enhanced security does much of anything.
So we pay this tax so they can force us to buy tiny shampoo and go through scanners that have to detect and blur our genitals so the TSA agent can't see.
Anyway... I finally get my pizza and head home. When I pulled into my driveway I noticed a bright moon in the sky. It looked so massive compared to other nights, so I tried to capture a moon selfie.

As a photographer, I should have realized that a wide angle lens is not going to capture how big the moon looked in the sky that night. Wide lenses exaggerate distance. So things close to the lens look huge and things far away look tiny. That's why we look like aliens if we hold our smartphones too close to our face. To the lens on your camera, the distance from the tip of your nose to your ears is quite vast. Which meens a celestial body that is 240,000 miles away looks like a tiny dot in the picture.
I still kept trying.

That could be a moon I guess.

Umm, Froggie... you got some moon in your hair.
Later I did try to capture the moon with my DSLR and an 80mm lens, but I guess the moon is just really far away or something.

ENHANCE!

A.I. upscaling reveals it is, in fact, the moon.
I ate my pizza and did a quick tire test and photoshoot.

And then I spent way too long Photoshopping this X-wing flying into my deep-as-heck tire tread.

And that was my day after the day.
Today, which is currently Thanksgiving, I slept.
I slept all night.
I slept most of the day.
I still want to sleep.
Weirdly, I am too tired to feel lonely. Though now that I wrote that, I am thinking about my parents being gone, so I just screwed that up.
But hey... at least my pizza was tasty.

Also! For the people who can't organize in person for whatever reason (PLEASE DO IF YOU CAN):
1. Find out who owns the companies you give money to and find out if they donate to Republican causes/Conservative causes - if so, it's time to cut them off. Start considering alternatives, and reach out via phone call to inquire about their company values. Keep track of what you learn and share with others.
2. Cancel your Amazon account - do it. It is time to relearn how to wait a week or two for shipping. Try to purchase things in person from local retailers when you can. If even 3% of the US population boycotts these megacompanies their profits will take a hit.
3. On a similar note, take the USPS option when ordering an item for shipping. It may take longer, but USPS is a federally funded entity that has been scraped to it's barest bones. They cannot accept direct donations, so doing business with them is the next best thing
4. DON'T DELETE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA. DO NOT LET THE FAR RIGHT COLONIZE ONLINE SPACES AND FORCE US EVEN FURTHER APART. Argue peacefully if you must, and do not fall into name-calling or bullying. Say your peace, share your sources, move on. Instagram/X/Threads/BlueSky/Tumblr are treasure troves of art and community engagement. Flood those spaces with positivity. Good news, art, music, recipes, flood right wing platforms with positive, non political media.
5. Read up. Read about Fascism. Read about resistance. Read about human empathy and deprogramming. Read about revolution. Read about survival. You will be tempted to fall into a spiral of dread - do not fall for it. It's not over yet.
Finally, most importantly: Don't assume someone else is doing it already. One of the reasons the progressive movements keep failing is because people keep assuming that the work is being done elsewhere. Conservatives are organized. The rollout of Project 2025 is going exactly to plan.
Focus.

Scrape Product Info, Images & Brand Data from E-commerce | Actowiz
Introduction
In todayâs data-driven world, e-commerce product data scraping is a game-changer for businesses looking to stay competitive. Whether you're tracking prices, analyzing trends, or launching a comparison engine, access to clean and structured product data is essential. This article explores how Actowiz Solutions helps businesses scrape product information, images, and brand details from e-commerce websites with precision, scalability, and compliance.
Why Scraping E-commerce Product Data Matters

E-commerce platforms like Amazon, Walmart, Flipkart, and eBay host millions of products. For retailers, manufacturers, market analysts, and entrepreneurs, having access to this massive product data offers several advantages:
- Price Monitoring:Â Track competitorsâ prices and adjust your pricing strategy in real-time.
- Product Intelligence:Â Gain insights into product listings, specs, availability, and user reviews.
- Brand Visibility:Â Analyze how different brands are performing across marketplaces.
- Trend Forecasting:Â Identify emerging products and customer preferences early.
- Catalog Management:Â Automate and update your own product listings with accurate data.
With Actowiz Solutionsâ eCommerce data scraping services, companies can harness these insights at scale, enabling smarter decision-making across departments.
What Product Data Can Be Scraped?

When scraping an e-commerce website, here are the common data fields that can be extracted:
â
Product Information
Product name/title
Description
Category hierarchy
Product specifications
SKU/Item ID
Price (Original/Discounted)
Availability/Stock status
Ratings & reviews
â
Product Images
Thumbnail URLs
High-resolution images
Zoom-in versions
Alternate views or angle shots
â
Brand Details
Brand name
Brand logo (if available)
Brand-specific product pages
Brand popularity metrics (ratings, number of listings)
By extracting this data from platforms like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Flipkart, Shopee, AliExpress, and more, Actowiz Solutions helps clients optimize product strategy and boost performance.
Challenges of Scraping E-commerce Sites

While the idea of gathering product data sounds simple, it presents several technical challenges:
Dynamic Content:Â Many e-commerce platforms load content using JavaScript or AJAX.
Anti-bot Mechanisms:Â Rate-limiting, captchas, IP blocking, and login requirements are common.
Frequent Layout Changes:Â E-commerce sites frequently update their front-end structure.
Pagination & Infinite Scroll:Â Handling product listings across pages requires precise navigation.
Image Extraction:Â Downloading, renaming, and storing image files efficiently can be resource-intensive.
To overcome these challenges, Actowiz Solutions utilizes advanced scraping infrastructure and intelligent algorithms to ensure high accuracy and efficiency.
Step-by-Step: How Actowiz Solutions Scrapes E-commerce Product Data

Letâs walk through the process that Actowiz Solutions follows to scrape and deliver clean, structured, and actionable e-commerce data:
1. Define Requirements
The first step involves understanding the clientâs specific data needs:

AI could be a transformative tool for empowering workers' movements and advancing labor rights, particularly if deployed with intentionality, transparency, and democratic control. Below is a strategic framework for how AI could be leveraged to support a workers' revolution, grounded in real-world applications and ethical principles:
---
### **1. Democratizing Knowledge and Education**
- **AI-Powered Labor Education Platforms**:
Use generative AI (e.g., chatbots, interactive courses) to educate workers about their rights, unionization strategies, and labor laws. For example:
- **Union chatbots** (e.g., [WorkIt](https://www.workitapp.org/)) could answer questions about workplace rights in multiple languages.
- **Personalized training tools** could simulate negotiations with employers or teach strike tactics.
- **Countering Corporate Propaganda**:
AI-driven platforms could debunk anti-union messaging by analyzing employer communications and generating fact-based rebuttals (e.g., exposing wage theft via data scraping).
---
### **2. Organizing and Mobilization**
- **Algorithmic Solidarity Networks**:
AI could map workplaces with high exploitation risks (e.g., low wages, safety violations) and identify ideal targets for union drives. For instance:
- Tools like **[Strike Wave](https://labornotes.org/)** (hypothetical) could predict which industries are ripe for collective action using labor market data.
- **Decentralized communication apps** (e.g., Signal with AI moderation) could securely coordinate strikes across borders.
- **Worker-Owned Social Media**:
AI-driven platforms (e.g., a worker-run alternative to LinkedIn) could connect gig workers, freelancers, and employees to share resources and bypass corporate-controlled networks.
---
### **3. Workplace Monitoring and Accountability**
- **AI Surveillance for Workers, Not Bosses**:
- **Wage theft detection**: Algorithms could analyze pay stubs and hours worked to flag discrepancies (e.g., [Coworker.org](https://www.coworker.org/)).
- **Safety compliance**: Wearable AI sensors could monitor hazardous conditions (e.g., excessive heat, toxic fumes) and automatically report violations to regulators.
- **Whistleblower Protection**:
AI tools could anonymize worker testimony about abuses and securely leak data to journalists or labor boards.
---
### **4. Collective Bargaining and Negotiation**
- **AI Negotiation Assistants**:
- **Contract analysis**: Tools like [ContractAI](https://www.littler.com/) (hypothetical) could compare union demands with industry standards and flag loopholes in employer proposals.
- **Real-time sentiment analysis**: During negotiations, AI could interpret employer body language or speech patterns to detect dishonesty.
- **Global Solidarity Algorithms**:
AI could link labor struggles across supply chains (e.g., connecting Amazon warehouse workers in the U.S. to factory workers in Bangladesh) to coordinate transnational strikes.
---
### **5. Worker-Owned AI Cooperatives**
- **Decentralized Labor Platforms**:
Worker cooperatives could use AI to compete with corporate gig platforms (e.g., Uber, DoorDash). For example:
- **Driver-owned ride-sharing apps** with AI dispatch systems that prioritize fair pay over shareholder profit.
- **Algorithmic profit-sharing**: Transparent AI could ensure equitable revenue distribution in cooperatives.
- **Open-Source Tools for Labor**:
Develop worker-controlled AI tools for tasks like scheduling, resource allocation, and democratic decision-making (e.g., [Loomio](https://www.loomio.org/) with AI facilitation).
---
### **6. Disrupting Exploitative Systems**
- **AI for Universal Basic Services**:
Advocate for publicly owned AI infrastructure (e.g., healthcare, housing, transit) to reduce dependency on exploitative jobs.
- **Sabotaging Corporate AI**:
Ethical hackers could develop AI tools to disrupt automated union-busting systems (e.g., flooding HR surveillance software with false data).
---
### **7. Addressing Intersectional Inequality**
- **Bias Audits for Hiring/Firing**:
AI could expose discriminatory practices in layoffs, promotions, or wage gaps (e.g., [MITâs Algorithmic Justice League](https://www.ajl.org/)).
- **Language Justice**:
Real-time translation AI could unite multilingual workforces and dismantle barriers to collective action.
---
### **Risks and Ethical Considerations**
- **Corporate Co-optation**: Capitalist firms may weaponize AI against workers (e.g., union-busting algorithms, predictive policing of organizers).
- **Surveillance Backlash**: Employers could retaliate against workers using AI tools.
- **Over-reliance on Technology**: Labor movements must remain human-centric, with AI as a toolânot a replacement for grassroots organizing.
---
### **Real-World Examples**
- **[Cooperation Jackson](https://cooperationjackson.org/)**: A Mississippi-based cooperative using open-source tech to build worker-owned enterprises.
- **[Turkopticon](https://turkopticon.ucsd.edu/)**: A tool that lets gig workers rate exploitative employers.
- **[Fairwork](https://fair.work/)**: Rates gig platforms on labor standards using AI-driven data collection.
---
### **Conclusion**
For AI to empower a workers' revolution, it must be **decentralized, transparent, and governed by labor itself**. This requires:
- **Worker-led AI development**: Unions and cooperatives should build tools, not corporations.
- **Strong data sovereignty**: Protect worker data from corporate capture.
- **Global solidarity**: Open-source AI models that serve the working class worldwide.
As historian Ruth Milkman notes, *"Technology is not neutralâit reflects the power structures that build it."* A workers' revolution must seize AI to dismantle exploitation, not entrench it.

AI is being touted as a "you'll never need a real artist again!" money saving tool for companies, and the AI industry is pushing for exceptions to be made to allow them access to creative works at large, so that they don't have to pay to access data to train their machines. This is the key issue - that your work is an asset they need, but don't want to pay for.
GenAI is a tool that requires training on art that is already created, and lawmakers are only just catching up to the fact that there isn't exactly a precedent for this use of creative work under current copyright law. I have my own issues with copyright (life of the artist plus what? 75 years? Serves only to put money in the pocket of companies who actually own the copyright, rather than the artist who made it) BUT if we're talking independent creatives, it's also the only recourse they have to ensure they can continue to earn money from their art, whether that's writing, illustration, movie-making, whatever.
I'm sure you've heard about the UK's proposed plans to allow AI companies to scrape UK creatives' work, providing only the option of an opt-out if you discover your work has been scraped, and likely only after it's already been shipped out for industry use. This plan received widespread pushback from the creative industries: the Writers Guild of Great Britain, Independent Society of Musicians, Motion Picture Association, and thousands of British creatives condemned the move, demanding existing copyright law be respected and enforced rather than degraded.
For industry creatives who are salaried and working for companies, the use of AI for, for example, colour correction, is understandable - it saves time, it can prevent costly reshoots in the movie sector, and it streamlines the process for professional illustrators and animators.
But we're not just seeing AI used to bolster existing jobs and workflows: Companies on Amazon are churning out slop ebooks, some claiming to be instructional which are full of dangerous misinformation. Coca-Cola put out a widely derided AI-made ad last Christmas, and the Labour Party in the UK tried to sell itself on Tiktok with an AI generated video which received a lot of criticism and made them the butt of many jokes.
The reason we're seeing such pushback against it is because it is threatening those industry jobs, it's threatening the livelihoods of independent artists, it's being pushed and spun as an alternative to hiring human creators by the AI industry, and it's being marketed that way to the corporations who would otherwise be hiring people to fulfill that work: publishing companies who can be persuaded that an AI book cover is as good as a man-made one, that it's okay if whole paragraphs or whole chapters of books are AI-generated. Their goal is to make it so the industry heavyweights will eventually feel like it's fine to outsource whole books to AI which, as I've noted, we're already seeing happen on Amazon with ebook slop.
We're not the target audience for AI. The CFO's and CEO's, creative industry number-crunchers, everyone looking to squeeze more profit from their tightening margins amid economic uncertainty, are: they'll see this as a way out of keeping artists on-staff, and if AI is allowed to continue using creatives' works without at least paying artists for the privilege, it'll push that state of affairs all the quicker.
What do you mean by "in-group signalling" in that post?
I'm referring to the way a lot of people seem to treat "unconditional hatred for Generative AI" as a signifier by which someone reaffirms their belonging or allegiance to the category of Artist (imagined as a special category of people wholly separate from the category of Non-Artist) based on the conception that the only reason why someone might not hate GenAI (or might hate it but think some criticisms of it are unprincipled) is because they 1) aren't an Artist themselves, and thus 2) they either don't understand what being an Artist is like or they categorically hate and oppose Artists.
To name a concrete example:
Just a couple weeks ago I got an anon message pretty much along the lines of "I get it, you don't have a creative bone in your body and have to pretend that art theft is fine because you're incapable of creating art yourself" (despite pretty clear evidence of me being an Artistâą, such as the fact that at the moment that anon was sent to me, you could scroll down like two posts on my blog and find me showing off how some of my music was featured in a doom metal compilation album).
This anon was sent in response to me saying that, while I have problems with the GenAI industry, I think "it's art theft" is not one of them because (by virtue of being a copyright abolitionist) I think describing any situation where a copy of something is made without affecting the original as "theft" is patently ridiculous. Like, that's a pretty clear example of how performing enough unconditional hatred of AI art is treated as a signifier of belonging to the Artistâą in-group, and failure to perform it is treated as a sign that you can only possibly be a ignorant and/or malicious Non-Artist.

What Impact Does Implementing the Six Pillars of Digital Shelf Success Have on CPG Sales?
The digital shelf has emerged as a pivotal battleground for consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies in the rapidly evolving retail landscape. By 2024, digital retailing is undeniable, with a projected 60% of consumers transitioning to online grocery shopping by 2025. Concurrently, the CPG industry witnesses a surge in adopting cutting-edge retail technology and AI. Predictions suggest that 45% of CPG firms will integrate advanced technological solutions into their workflows by 2024, with expectations of doubling by 2025, highlighting rapid digital transformation. This shift underscores the critical role of e-commerce data scraping and the digital shelf in capturing valuable CPG data, which is pivotal for CPG eCommerce success. The blog delves into strategies, best practices, challenges, and the role of analytics in retail strategy in 2024.
Navigating the Digital Shelf: Choosing the Right Path for CPGs
In the ever-expanding digital retail landscape, achieving visibility on the digital shelf has become paramount for consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands. Selecting the appropriate eCommerce channels is now crucial for sustained growth.
According to a 2024 consumer buying behavior report, Google Search initiates 65% of shopper journeys, closely followed by Amazon. These platforms are vital for CPG brand sellers, illustrating the significance of the Digital Shelf. Additionally, brand websites kickstart over 10% of shopper journeys. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales are projected to surpass $167.55 billion in 2024, with Walmart leading in grocery eCommerce over Amazon. Instacart, boasting a vast network spanning 750 million products from 85,000 stores, presents a significant player. With its expansive reach and introduction of Kroger Marketplace, Kroger offers substantial opportunities for food and beverage brands. Walgreens and CVS draw a sizable digital audience in the drugstore category. These brands exemplify the diverse digital shelf ecosystem, illustrating the myriad opportunities and challenges for CPG brands in the digital realm.
CPG brands can leverage grocery data scraping services to capitalize on these opportunities, gather valuable insights, and optimize their digital shelf presence.
6 Strategies for CPG Success in the Digital Shelf Era
As online shopping becomes increasingly prevalent, mastering the digital shelf is paramount for consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands aiming to thrive in today's competitive landscape. Private-label brands pose formidable competition to established CPG products, constituting a significant portion of grocery sales, especially in regions like Europe. Moreover, emerging digital-first startups present new challenges to traditional retailers, emphasizing the need for a robust digital strategy.
In this context, the ability to scrape CPG data is critical to a successful digital strategy. By gathering insights from various sources, including competitor pricing, consumer preferences, and market trends, brands can make informed decisions to optimize their digital shelf presence. Whether monitoring competitor pricing, analyzing consumer behavior, or identifying emerging market trends, scraping CPG data provides brands with valuable insights to stay competitive and adapt to evolving consumer demands.
Elevating Product Content Optimization
With countless alternatives available to consumers, securing top rankings on eCommerce platforms is essential. Most shoppers limit their searches to the first page of results, with a significant portion favoring organic listings. Crafting compelling, SEO-optimized product listings is crucial for enhancing visibility and attracting potential customers. Incorporating trending keywords naturally and optimizing for platform-specific algorithms are vital strategies for outperforming competitors.

Ratings, another critical component of Amazon reviews, distill customer satisfaction into a numerical form. These aggregate scores offer a quick snapshot of a product's overall reception, aiding consumers in making informed choices amid a sea of options.
Beyond the quantitative aspects, customer sentiments expressed in reviews offer qualitative insights. Understanding the emotions and opinions of users provides businesses with a nuanced understanding of their audience, helping them tailor products and services to meet consumer expectations.

Best Practices And Ethical Considerations
Best Practices and Ethical Considerations in web scraping are critical to ensure responsible and lawful data extraction. Adhering to ethical standards promotes a positive reputation and helps maintain a fair and open internet ecosystem. Here are key considerations:
Respect Website Terms of Service
Continually review and comply with the terms of service of the website you're scraping, including Amazon. Websites may have specific rules regarding automated access and data extraction.
Avoid Excessive Requests
Implement rate-limiting to avoid overwhelming the target website's servers with too many requests. Excessive requests can lead to server strain and potential service disruptions.
Use Robots.txt
Check for and respect the guidelines outlined in a website's robots.txt file. This file often indicates which parts of the site are off-limits for web crawlers or scrapers.
User-Agent Identification
Identify your scraper through a user-agent string. This allows website administrators to understand the source of the requests and facilitates communication if issues arise.
Data Privacy
Do not scrape sensitive personal information without explicit consent. Respect user privacy by avoiding data extraction that could lead to the identification of individuals.
Abide by Legal Guidelines
Please familiarize yourself with the legal landscape surrounding web scraping, as it can vary by jurisdiction. Some websites explicitly prohibit scraping in their terms of service, while others may have legal precedents protecting their data.
Monitor Changes
Regularly check the target website for any changes in its structure or terms of service. Adjust your scraping practices accordingly to maintain compliance.
Handle Cookies Responsibly
If your scraping involves handling cookies, ensure you comply with applicable data protection laws. Be transparent about cookie usage and offer users the option to opt-out.
Provide Attribution
If applicable, give proper attribution to the source website when using scraped data. This helps maintain transparency and acknowledges the efforts of the original content creators.
Be Mindful of Impact
Avoid scraping data in a way that could negatively impact the performance or functionality of the target website. Responsible scraping should not disrupt the user experience for others.
By adhering to these best practices and ethical considerations, web scrapers can contribute to a responsible and sustainable online environment while still extracting valuable data for legitimate purposes.
Challenges And Solutions
Like any web scraping endeavor, Amazon review scraping comes with its challenges. Addressing these challenges is crucial for a successful and sustainable scraping process. Here are common challenges and solutions:
Dynamic Content
Challenge:Â Amazon pages often load dynamic content, making capturing all relevant data challenging.
Solution:Â Use tools or libraries that handle dynamic content, such as Selenium. Simulate user interactions to ensure all elements are loaded before scraping.
CAPTCHA Challenges
Challenge:Â CAPTCHA mechanisms can hinder automated scraping by requiring human verification.
Solution:Â Implement tools that can handle CAPTCHAs, or consider using headless browsers with user emulation to bypass CAPTCHA checks.
Anti-Scraping Measures
Challenge:Â Websites like Amazon may employ anti-scraping measures to detect and block automated bots.
Solution:Â Rotate IP addresses, use proxies, and employ random delays between requests to mimic human-like behavior and avoid detection.
Changes in Website Structure
Challenge:Â Amazon frequently updates its website structure, leading to broken scrapers.
Solution:Â Regularly monitor and update your scraping script to accommodate changes in the website structure. Use version control to track changes over time.
Pagination Handling
Challenge:Â Amazon reviews are often paginated, making scraping beyond the first page challenging.
Solution:Â Implement logic to handle pagination. Extract and follow links to subsequent pages systematically to collect a comprehensive dataset.
IP Blocking
Challenge:Â Amazon may block or limit access from specific IP addresses if it detects scraping activity.
Solution:Â Use a pool of rotating IP addresses or proxies to prevent IP blocking. Employ IP rotation strategies to avoid raising suspicion.
Legal and Ethical Concerns
Challenge:Â There are legal and ethical considerations when scraping data from Amazon.
Solution:Â Adhere to Amazon's terms of service, respect website policies, and ensure compliance with relevant laws. Scraping should be conducted responsibly and ethically.
Handling Large Datasets
Challenge:Â Scraping many reviews can result in a massive, challenging dataset.
Solution:Â Implement efficient data storage methods, such as databases, and consider limiting the number of reviews to scrape based on project needs.
Bypassing Rate Limits
Challenge:Â Websites may have rate limits to prevent abuse, leading to blocked access.
Solution:Â Implement a rate-limiting strategy to ensure your scraper makes only a few requests in a short period. Respect the site's guidelines to avoid being blocked.
By proactively addressing these challenges with appropriate solutions, your Amazon review scraping efforts can remain effective, resilient, and aligned with ethical and legal standards. Regular monitoring and adaptation to changes in the web landscape are vital to maintaining a successful scraping workflow.
Conclusion

I thought that was good hard fun. Never-the-less (I love to use that term), the usual malcontents fussed about the programming before they started. Being such a big hearted forgiving charitable person, I was able to ignore them and charge it to the rain.
No, it wasn't Robert this time. He doesn't walk over here on rainy days 'cause his bare skull can't tolerate the chill.
Somebody, (it wasn't Sue this time) ran over an orange traffic cone last week. It would have been a hit-and-run if the cone hadn't lodged under his engine and made a loud scraping noise as it disintegrated when he sped away. Embarrassed, and aware that he was seen, he had Amazon deliver us some definitely upgraded traffic cones today. They are taller, more robust, more expensive, and will even glow in the dark. Sue will not get away with it next time.
Yesterday, all CrossFit affiliates were informed that affiliation fees were increasing. All Grandfathered and free affiliates would increase to $4,500 annually. Unsurprisingly, the CrossFit LLC personnel don't know what their right and left hands are doing. Today I received the annual renewal for our LHCF affiliation and the fee was WAIVED as it has been for the last 12 years. Naturally, I signed and returned it in about 10 seconds. They already sent me a "PAID IN FULL" receipt. Please stand by.

Worldbuilding/historical references in historical shows
Missing scenes, especially if it explains plot holes or offers space for exploring character motivations
Friends to Lovers
Romantic fluff or healthy, romantic relationships between consenting adults who communicate
Domesticity
Slice of life
Found family dynamics, supportive friendships
Particularly strong, loyal friendships between women. In fact, in historical shows where the world/setting can be misogynistic, I would prefer stories focusing on the friendships and bonds between women, and how they survive that world, rather than their relationships with men, unless the relationship with men are of the more healthy, consenting adults of equal power variety
On the whole I would rather read about kind, decent men who have a healthy relationship with independent women and drink their respect women juice. However, with regards to a character like Qianlong in Ruyi, for example, I donât mind exploring what makes him the man that he is, and taking into consideration the historical context of his powerful position.Â
Characters, but especially women, being competent, clever, or getting out close scrapes or tricky situations using their wit and intellect
Development/exploration of female characters, especially those who may get less spotlight in canon
Everybody Lives Nobody Dies AUs
I prefer M/F and F/F ships to M/MÂ (Does not apply to Solitaire, feel free to write Nick/Charlie and any other canon ship in Oseman-verse)
Iâm open to any rating, and do not mind smut, as long as it takes into consideration the DNWs.Â
This is an odd note, but relevant to writing Chinese characters: I donât mind if you write characters' names as, for example, âQiao Jing Jing" or âQiao Jingjingâ. You will see even in this letter I use the two forms interchangeably. But please avoid âQiao JingJingâ with capital letters in the middle of the word.Â
For most of these fandoms I have requested any character, however below are some prompts that may include some specific characters. Please feel free to take these as just suggestions, and tweak the combination of characters, remove or add characters as the story requires. If you have any other idea you want to write, feel free to run with it and you donât have to stick to these prompts.Â
Now to the fandoms!
äœ æŻæçèŁè | You Are My Glory (TV)
Characters requested: any
Fandom specific DNW: infidelity
This is a 32-episode Chinese drama (Viki, Amazon Prime, Youtube) based on the novel by Gu Man, translation available here. If you are unfamiliar with the drama and donât want to spend 20 hours watching the drama (though obviously I highly recommend it!!), reading the novel might be quicker as it is an easy read.
What I love about this drama is the heart-warming romance featuring two emotionally mature characters who, despite knowing what they want out of life, still struggle with the high demands of modern society. Reconnecting over 10 years after high school, they learn to appreciate, love and support each other for the people they have each grown to be, and build a life together based on trust and mutual support.Â
Since the original novel and the drama make heavy use of things like chat transcripts and Weibo messages etc, feel free to also incorporate this into your fic.
For the fic: I love Yu Tu and Jing Jing, both individually and as a couple, so anything about them goes. I love slice of life and the romantic fluff vibe of the drama and would love to see more of this.
Some prompts:
- The drama and novel take place mostly from Jing Jingâs point of view, but Yu Tu actually undergoes enormous emotional highs and lows throughout the drama, from his feelings about his career to his feelings about Jing Jing. I would love to see some canon scenes written from Yu Tuâs point of view, especially regarding how he gradually changes his perception about Jing Jing and how his feelings for her develop over the course of coaching her the game.
- The first meeting between Jing Jing and Yu Tuâs mother, and Yu Tu and Jing Jingâs parents both took place for less than five minutes and played mostly for laughs in the drama. Since they both have busy jobs and likely only go home about once a year during lunar new year, when is the second time they actually, properly meet each otherâs parents? How do these meetings go? Beyond his mother being starstruck, how do Yu Tuâs parents actually feel about their son dating someone as famous as Jing Jing?
- Once the shock settled, how do Yu Tu and Jing Jingâs high school classmates react to this couple? How does the gossip spread around to the rest of their class? How did Xia Qing eventually hear about it and how does she react?
- Money is sort of a pink elephant in Yu Tu and Jing Jingâs relationship. Itâs one thing for Yu Tu to be okay with knowing that Jing Jing will always earn ridiculously more than him, but how do they navigate this in their relationship when they are dating? After they got married? What if his mother did have some serious health issue that he is unable to pay for?
- Thereâs a lot of fourth-wall leaning commentary in this drama about Jing Jingâs acting career, since Dilraba is pretty much playing herself. The drama also opens as she turns 30, which is a weird point in a Chinese actressâs acting career since she would have at this point gathered enough experience to mature as an actress but lead roles for women in their 30s, playing characters that are age-appropriate, are scarce and start to dwindle rapidly at this point. So how does Jing Jing manage her acting career in her 30s and 40s and what are some challenges she might encounter?
- Itâs mentioned that Jing Jing won a best actress award about a year after she and Yu Tu got together. Obviously keeping their relationship low key meant that he didnât go to the award ceremony with her. It would be interesting to see all the behind the scenes of that scenario. Alternatively, how do they manage to keep their relationship lowkey despite Jing Jingâs fame?Â
- The drama skips 5 years right after they got married, so a fic filling in the gaps, showing how they transition from dating to being married would be interesting.
- Iâd love to see Jing Jing accompany Yu Tu to some university reunion and meet his more snobby classmates like Qu Ming who looked down on his career choice.
- What actually happened at the dinner when Jing Jing met Yu Tuâs colleagues?Â
ćżćżæ„ćžž | New Life Begins (TV)Â
Characters requested: Zhao Fangru (New Life Begins), Hao Jia (New Life Begins), Dong Hai Tang (New Life Begins), Yin An's Solar Term Ladies (New Life Begins)
This drama is set in a fictional version of ancient China. The world within the drama is divided into 9 states, each with its own culture and social systems. The drama is about a young woman who comes from a state where monogamy is the norm, to the most powerful ruling state Xinchuan where men have many wives and concubines, where she is chosen to be concubine to a supposedly obscure prince. The story also features many stories of friendships between different women who marry into the state of Xinchuan and how they help each other navigate life . You can watch the drama on Youtube.
Of course what I love best about this drama is the many supportive friendships between different women. Feel free to include any of the requested characters in any combination and/or leave any of them out as you wish.Â
Some prompts:Â
- I absolutely love how Zhao Fangru and Hao Jiaâs relationship goes from rivals to uneasy allies to friends. I would love to see the progression of this relationship after Yin Songâs exile and they donât say goodbye. Domestic life co-parenting Changle? Working together to develop Hao Jiaâs business? Traveling the world together? Feel free to write them as a romantic ship or not!Â
- Who was the first of the Solar Term Ladies to enter Yin Anâs household and what was the initial relationship with Haitang like? How did they discover/come to the conclusion that they werenât rivals and become friends? How was life different when it might just be 2-3 of them, compared to where we are in the drama with nearly 20 of them? How do they develop their different ways of coping with life with Yin An? I enjoy the comedic way the drama portrays their lives with Yin An, but feel free to go a more angsty route. E.g. how do the Solar Term Ladies feel about being given new names and their old identifies being taken away? What were their lives like before Yin An and how did they become his concubine? He seems too indolent to go through lengths to take them by force and itâs hinted that he sweetalked them one way or another. You can also focus on any or any combination of the named Solar Term Ladies if you want.Â
- Iâm also interested in Hao Jia joining the Solar Term Ladies at their restaurant and fitting into this new life. We meet Hao Jia as Li Weiâs friend and while she does become friends with the other women like Shangguan and Sisi etc but due to her life with Yin Song, she is also often isolated from the greater sisterhood. How does she adjust to her new freedom at the restaurant and how do the Solar Term Ladies support her? It takes a village to raise a child, and Changle definitely has a village - give me some simple domesticity at the restaurant!
- Iâm totally open to any other idea you might want to write, involving any of the requested characters and/or any other unrequested character. I just love the female friendships in this drama so feel free to just go along that general theme!Â
èżç æ Œæ Œ | HuĂĄn ZhĆ« GĂ© GĂ© | Princess Returning Pearl
Characters requested: any
Watch on Google drive.
Some relationships I would read anything of: Xiao Yan Zi/Yong Qi, Xiao Yan Zi and Zi Weiâs sisterhood, father-daughter relationship between Qian Long and Xiao Yan Zi and/or Zi Wei. But if you want some prompts:
- Xiao Yan Zi/Yong Qi slice-of-life domestic fluff. Maybe early days in their marriage, including how does Xiao Yan Zi deal with the new responsibilities and expectations that must have been thrown at her as the wife of a prince? I donât mind pregnancy/baby/children fic but donât feel you need to go there if thatâs not your thing.
- Daily life with Xiao Yan Zi and Zi Wei either before they enter the palace, or at Shu Fang Zhai.Â
- What if Xiao Yan Zi didnât actually get injured and mistaken as a princess? How would Xiao Yan Zi and Zi Wei keep in touch? How could Yong Qi and Xiao Yan Zi meet then and fall in love?Â
- I would love to read a story about Zi Weiâs childhood, which must have been difficult because her mother would be a pariah for having and raising a child out of wedlock. What types of difficulties must Zi Wei and her mother have had to deal with? What guesses/speculations did younger Zi Wei have about her father?
- The drama doesnât really go into Zi Wei and Yong Qiâs relationship, and it sort of always feels like Yong Qi and Zi Wei were more connected by Xiao Yan Zi than anything else. I would love an exploration of this sibling relationship beyond their relationship with Xiao Yan Zi. Maybe some sibling bonding on either the plain clothes inspection trip in season 1 or during their runaway trip in season 2.
- Some pre-canon stories of the characters would also be nice: any glimpse into Yong Qiâs friendship with Er Tai (and Er Kang, but honestly in season 1 itâs clear that heâs much closer to Er Tai than Er Kang) or adventures from Xiao Yan Ziâs childhood. Bonus if maybe Yong Qi and Xiao Yan Zi have met before in Beijing and they could either remember it later or not.
ćŠæżäŒ | Ruyiâs Royal Love in the Palace (TV)
Characters requested: any
Watch on Viki
Iâm mostly interested in Ruyi and Hailanâs relationship, so would love to see a fic exploring that. The relationship between them can be platonic or romantic/sexual, I donât mind either way, but if it is romantic/sexual, I donât want that to be portrayed as being a superior form higher than a platonic friendship.
Some prompts:
- The thing I love most about Ruyi as a character is her personal integrity, and the fact that she never compromises her morals even when it would probably save her a lot of pain. Alternatively, Hailan in the drama could have been portrayed as a lot more morally-grey, but the censorship sort of put a stop to that. I would love to see the dynamics/friendship/relationship between them explored, where Ruyi can be too morally upright and Hailanâs efforts to protect her over the years.
- Itâs pretty explicitly stated in the drama/novel that Qianlong raped Hailan one day while drunk and Ruyi had to beg him to give her an official position as a concubine because Hailan would have killed herself otherwise. The irony of this relationship when in this story, Qianlong is also a child produced from the emperor raping a maid and casting her aside, is staggering and should be written about more. Alternatively, how did Ruyi deal with the idea that the man she loves did this? If you take this prompt, feel free to waive the dub/non-con DNW as long as the story doesnât glorify it.
- I am also interested in deeper exploration of Yongqi as a character and his relationship with Ruyi, especially when it grows complicated towards the end of the story. His political ambitions and his insecurities stemming from not actually being Ruyiâs son obviously conflict with his affection and respect for her. Do his insecurities come from witnessing the relationship between his father and the empress dowager, who is also only Qianlongâs adopted mother? How does he manage these feelings? If you write this prompt, and can manage it, I would prefer a light focus on Hu Yunjiao, if you have to mention her at all.
- I would like to see how Hailan copes after Ruyiâs death, and how her relationships with other women in the harem, especially with Xiangjian, Meiruo and Chen Wanyin (Wan Pin) change. After Ruyi dies, Hailan really would only be second to Wei Yanwan in the harem, so how does she use that power in the harem, especially during the years when Wei Yanwan was slowly losing her mental capacity?
- On a lighter note, I would love to see any domestic scenes of Ruyi and Hailan co-parenting Yongqi when he was a child.
ç„ćŠç„ćŠćșæŻç»żè„çșąçŠ | The Story of Minglan (TV)Â
Characters requested: any
Fandom-specific DNW:Â infidelity in Gu Tingyu/Minglan, Changbai/his wife, Rulan/her husband.
Watch on Viki.
Things I would love to read about for this fandom:
- Exploration of Minglanâs thoughts and feelings for Gu Tingye before their marriage, and her growing feelings for him after their marriage. Obviously she starts out already counting the days when he might stop loving her, but does she realise at any point that she has come to love him/completely trust him? Given her low expectations of love and everything she had witnessed all her life, how does she deal with that feeling? Does she have a moment of realising he is not like her father?
- Exploration of the relationship between Minglan and Hualan. Alternatively, Rulan is portrayed as more benign than Molan when they were growing up, but Rulanâs actions can still be quite harmful to Minglan when they were younger. An exploration of the maturing sisterhood between Rulan and Minglan, especially if Rulan could be portrayed as more sensible than anyone actually gives her credit for, would be great. How does Rulan and Minglanâs relationship mature after they got married?
- On that note, how is Rulanâs attitude to Minglan so different than how Changbai and Hualan treat Minglan? Is it just because Rulan is the youngest of her full siblings so is more petulant? Is it because sheâs closer in age to Molan and just projecting her frustration with Molan onto Minglan because itâs easier? I would love to see the dynamics/different characteristics between Hualan, Changbai and Rulan explored too.Â
- Other sibling relationships I am interested in seeing explored: Changbai, Hualan, Rulan, Minglan in any combination. How do Changbai or Hualan get roped into helping Gu Tingye win over Minglan? How do they feel about it? Domestic scenes/any noodle incident with Hualan and Changbai helping/protecting Minglan against their mother/Concubine Lin/even agaisnt Rulan?Â
- I love Changbai and Tingyeâs friendship/found family dynamics and would love to see more of it in any form.Â
Solitaire - Alice OsemanÂ
Characters requested: any
As indicated above, ignore the âmore M/F and F/F, less M/Mâ preference above for this fandom. Feel free to write as much or as little Nick/Charlie for this fandom as you want.Â
I just discovered this novel after binging through Heartstopper, both the show and the comics. In the spirit of keeping this Solitaire-relevant and not just veering completely off to the wider Heartstopper-verse, here be some prompts:
- I am so fascinated by Nick and Toriâs interactions/relationship (friendship?) with each other. Tori trusts Nick as much as she could trust anyone under the circumstances with Charlieâs emotional and physical wellbeing, but how did that trust develop? Did they know each other at all before Nick and Charlie got together through some Truham/Higgs event/activity, or did they just meet because of Nick and Charlie? I would love to see scenes of interactions between Nick and Tori, maybe just as Nick was hanging around the Springsâ home, or during Charlieâs inpatient treatments. How did Nick and Tori support each other during Charlieâs treatment? Did they have further conversations after Charlieâs relapse during the Solitaire novel? Do they bounce ideas off each other on how to support Charlie?Â
- Itâs clear that itâs not just Tori and Charlie who have mental health issues. Their mother has more than her fair share of it too, which probably contributed to making her childrenâs mental health worse. But the novel is also from Toriâs POV and she is so deep into her own mental health crisis that there are arguments to be made that her view of her parents especially her mother is not entirely accurate. Meanwhile Olly is in the middle of all of this - how much does he really understand about both Charlie and Toriâs issues and how much do his parents (if at all) explain to him? I would love an exploration of the Spring family dynamics as they all deal with their own problems while also looking each other though the lenses of their own experiences. I realise this is a tough issue and maybe too depressing for a Yuletide story but just throwing this out there.Â
- Alternatively, just because you have a mental illness doesnât mean itâs dementors all the time. There are flashes of light and carefree time. Give me so sibling fluffs with the Spring siblings including Olly and throw Nick and/or Michael in as well if you want. Trip to the beach? Park? Arcade? I donât play video games so I donât know how many people can play Mario Kart at once, but some insane Mario Kart tournament?Â
- The only thing that I didnât relate to Tori about is her views on Pride and Prejudice. I found this line from her essay particularly hilarious: âI am sorry, Mr Kent, but I have not read Pride and Prejudice. I disagreed with the very first sentence and that was enough for me.â - Donât get me wrong, I love the fact that for once the moody loner in a novel isnât a bookworm, and in fact hates reading and books, but does she genuinely not realise that this line is satire? Does she truly think Austen believes it as well? Does anyone, e.g. Mr Kent, even explains to her that itâs meant to be tongue-in-cheek? Does Tori actually care or appreciate that? I would love a Tori take on Shakespeare because god knows she canât go through English Lit A levels without reading Shakespeare. Considering Much Ado About Nothing also has a lot of sarcastic humour and has a very similar plot to Pride and Prejudice, whatâs Tori take on this? Or Romeo and Julietâs romance? Hamletâs brooding? Feel free to go fully academia and write an in-universe essay if thatâs your thing.
- How does Tori continue to deal with mental health and relationships after Solitaire while transferring to Truham, while knowing everything thatâs happened was because of her? Do Charlie and/or Michael and her girl friends help her through this?Â
- Whatâs Toriâs deal with diet lemonade? Is this also some food/drink-related control thing that she shares with Charlie or does Tori just likes it to the point of never drinking anything else?Â
~*~
Thanks for reading this really long letter!! Again, if you have your own idea that youâre dying to write that doesnât have any element from the DNW list, feel free to write that too! Happy writing and I canât wait to read your story!Â
