2022 MOVIE OF THE WEEK #35

die hard. can you believe i had never seen this movie until this year’s holiday season? cuz i can’t really believe it. i went through such a bruce willis phase when i was younger, i used to own the dvd set of moonlighting and i watched him on friends and in movies with matthew perry and the fifth element was a classic in my house...somehow this one just escaped me, i think because my mom’s Action Men tastes were very specifically adrian paul and chuck norris. whereas mine can probably be best described as ‘aw shucks schlubby charm,’ dudes who just seem more normal until they are required to be badasses. bruce willis, david harbour...i can’t remember what other actor i realized he reminds me of while watching this, but i know i told leander and was pleased by the realization, so i’m sure there are more examples.

anyway, this was so not on my radar; i didn’t even know what it was about other than through cultural osmosis. when a movie is mentioned as often as this one, you Know It even when you don’t. though there is a specific kind of joy that comes from finally seeing the line ‘yippee ki-yay, motherfucker’ delivered in its original context. that was fun. 

until pretty recently, i didn’t know alan rickman was the antagonist--that was a large part of why i watched. and boy does he make a meal out of this role. a significant chunk of this movie was just me thinking about what a great actor he is in this. his line deliveries are so delicious that i made a mental note just to mention ‘ho...ho...ho.’ as something nobody else could have had as much fun with. i was truly sad when his character finally died, because of course that ending was always going to come, but i didn’t want it to. the mark of a good villain is actually wanting more of them when you’re not supposed to like them in the first place, and he was an excellent villain--clever and funny with his own moral code, perfect to face off against bruce willis’s unexpected hero.

besides alan rickman, the other reason i decided to watch this (with @actuallylukedanes​ and their fiance who had both seen it before) was that it was featured in an episode of you are good, a movie podcast i like, which meant i’d already heard about the plot and figured that might help me enjoy it more. (normally if they discuss movies i intend to watch, i skip those episodes to avoid spoilers, but i never planned to see this one. lol.) anyway, they watched it as one of their christmas picks, and i knew there was a big debate about whether or not it counts as a christmas movie.

now that i’ve seen it, i feel like the debate is settled and it is OBVIOUSLY a christmas movie, no question. it is in my opinion a movie about a bunch of people (including john mcclain) having the worst christmas of their lives, and there was something i found oddly comforting about that. with my shiny new holiday depression this year, i wasn’t in the mood for any holiday movies--but i would rewatch this one every christmas, because like any good christmas movie there is a party and people remember that family is the most important thing. but UNLIKE other christmas movies, it has alan rickman taking his craft super seriously while bruce willis is in his softest and prettiest young phase, which i adore. and things explode.

(i also need us all to move on from this ‘is it a christmas movie?’ debate so people can be converted to the cult of my much more underappreciated christmas fave, batman returns. tim burton said gotham christmas but make it creepy! and michelle pfieffer learned better whip skills than harrison ford just to manifest it. the true spirit of christmas is being reanimated by cats, and using your new nine lives to flirt with a wealthy orphan while seeking vengeance on anyone who wronged you.)

i’m sure i could go on, but you can tell how old this movie is from the poster up there--i was barely ALIVE when this came out, lol. so i am very late to the party and i doubt a ton of people need me going on and on about it. besides alan rickman and bruce willis, i didn’t know most of the cast, but they all did a good job, there was at least one plot thread that didn’t go the way i expected, and i was pleasantly surprised by that. this movie’s racial politics make me reeeeally uncomfortable, but it’s not at all unusual for its time. the one honorable mention i’d give in casting is to the actor i grew up watching on family matters who plays a central role in helping john survive. he’s portrayed as a black hero, but he can’t just be one because he’s john’s emotional support system throughout the movie--no, he has to become a ‘real’ cop again by shooting a guy. at the same time, you have two major comic relief characters, and both are young black men; one driving john’s limo and the other handling technology for the villain. there’s a same sort of ‘balance’ with the movie’s two asian characters, the seemingly kind company owner who’s murdered early on versus a team member of the villain whose role is also tiny.

the movie is also trying to say stuff (or is just accidentally saying stuff based on the era) around post-soviet american perspectives, but i feel like the racial element sticks out way more because it goes uncommented on. like since it’s clearly not something the plot thinks about, these choices are even more noticeable and important because they reflect the buried stuff.

idk, i just have a lot of feelings about the fact that john’s friend over the radio couldn’t be really redeemed unless he used his gun. or about the fact that he and john are both cops in the first place, so even this sort of ‘everyman’ action movie is promoting the idea that while the fbi and other bureaucracy is useless or will even make things worse, good cops are the only hope we have. 

and his marital reconciliation--i basically just threw up my hands with that one, because i don’t think a near-death experience on christmas will automatically save your marriage. but at the same time, if your wife’s problem with you is that you wouldn’t follow her to her new job, and you finally show up there and save a whole building full of people while she’s in it...then yeah, okay, whatever. maybe that’s all it takes. i mean, if i were her, i’d probably be willing to consider applying for jobs back in new york after that anyway. they’ve definitely earned some kind of happy ending.

in conclusion, i loved this movie. it is an action movie classic in the truest sense of how that felt in the 80s and 90s, and it features bruce willis at his finest and alan rickman briefly doing an american accent and a whole very huge lot of broken glass. broken glass is basically a character in this movie. die hard was an excellent christmas choice for me this year and i’m glad i was welcome to join in the watching. :)

Years after Allura's death and Lance's return to the farm, he finally accepts Coran's offer of becoming an official Ambassador for Altea He and Shiro have gotten closer after Allura's death and he joins Shiro, and his sister Veronica on the Atlas as a non-combatant Coalition Delegate, where the three of them spend a lot of time together off-duty.

While he is on the Atlas, they get called in to intervene in a conflict on a Coalition planet with a lingering splinter cell of Zarkon loyalists. Non-combatant he may well be, but Lance cannot stand by and let people die when he could be helping! Dspite protests, he gears up and hops into a shuttle to provide cover fire. During the fighting he is seriously injured, needing intensive medical intervention.

While he recovers, he and Shiro grow even closer until they realize that what they have is so much more than friendship.

CW- this fic deals with Lance's recovery from extensive injuries and is told from his point of view. There is a lot of medical content, intense emotions, and depiction of processing trauma- some of which predates the incidents in the story.

Lance has finally been released from the medward and is settled into Shiro's quarters for the foreseeable future. Shiro doesn't want to be presumptuous, but they've been together for a while and this is the first real privacy they have had since they realized that what they had together was so much more than friendship.

Thankfully, Lance is as outspoken as ever and they make the most of Lance's new freedom from medical supervision to 'explore their relationship'.

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #52

Happy Thanksgiving! Here are thirty fics. I’m so close to being caught up that I can almost taste it.

This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!

Fogged Breath by BluePlanetTrash Words: 2,118 Author’s Summary: Ever since he was little Lance suffered from asthma. He didn’t think that it would be much of a problem in space. Fate had other plans for him, however. My Comments: Great little hurt!Lance fic with an exceptionally protective team. Hits the spot.

oh, the end of infinity by MissSugarPlum Words: 9,896 Author’s Summary: Matt can’t sleep. It’s not like this is a new occurrence. Sleep has been evading him for years now, and he can’t even remember what a proper restful night feels like. He sometimes thinks of when he was still at the Garrison, how he used to think he knew what stress was, how he used to bemoan the pressure from instructors, the rigorous training, the way he could only ever seem to get no more than six hours of sleep a night, and he yearns for the simplicity of back then. Past-Matt didn’t know how good he had it. -x- [Matt adjusts to being in the Castle of Lions.] My Comments: I really enjoyed this exploration of Matt getting used the castle and the team, especially the development of his relationship Lance. It starts out adversarial but gets much less so. Great scenes with Pidge, too. Possibly romantic Klance in the background, but can also be read as gen.

Congratulations by TheWonderTwins Words: 2,433 Author’s Summary: A mission doesn’t quite go to plan and Pidge is taken prisoner. Not everyone takes it as well as Pidge does. My Comments: Ahhh, Pidge. What a badass. This was exciting and fun to read.

Local Color by TheWonderTwins Words: 2,361 Author’s Summary: “Could this be more cliche?” Pidge muttered quietly. Keith smirked briefly. “We could get into a barfight.”“ Please resist the urge to punch people.” Pidge requested. My Comments: I frankly impressed that these two avoided getting into a barfight. Fun little scene with the two of them dealing with some aggression from locals quite well, actually.

What She Sees by HapaxLegomenon Words: 2,263 Author’s Summary: Matt’s safe, now, and Pidge is delighted to have her brother back. But Matt’s different, and she notices. Set during the end of “The Machinations of Perception.” My Comments: Little missing scene from a previously recced fic. Since that fic was entirely in Matt’s POV, it was nice to get a scene from Pidge’s perspective, here. These poor kids. Things are hard, but I’m glad they have each other now.

Easy Target by SunshineAndRainbows Words: 1,832 Author’s Summary: Every move was deliberate, every action filled with intent. He had meant to land his ship, he meant to stand from his cockpit, and so, he meant to walk slowly, deliberately to meet his hopeful allies. He had certainly meant to say something clever and suitably dignified in greeting.He hadn’t meant to collapse the moment his feet hit solid ground. My Comments: How to make me feel sympathetic to Lotor: Whump him good.

Go Go Paladins of Voltron by hufflepirate Words: 2,662 Author’s Summary: Shiro gave up everything, including his spot at the Garrison, to look after his dying mother. Now his mother is gone and he’s alone — until he meets four teenagers with attitude, a set of mysterious keys, and maybe, just maybe a purpose. Written for platonicvldweek 3, for the prompt Alternate Reality/Free, so it’s not QUITE a Power Rangers Fusion AU, but it is the meet cute from Power Rangers (2017), but with Voltron. We’re calling it an alternate reality, not an alternate universe, because they’re gonna end up in space doing their space thing, just… a little differently. (Marked complete because I like the ending ok as it is and don’t have time to write this as a multichapter fic right now.) My Comments: I haven’t seen the new Power Rangers movie, but you don’t need to enjoy this fun, fluffy little getting-together fic.

Bad to Worse by bookwormgir1LH Words: 1,794 Author’s Summary: Lance, Keith, Hunk and Pidge go on a hiking trip. Things start to wrong from the offset, but it soon gets even worse… My Comments: Fun modern AU about an absolutely disastrous attempt at having a good time. Poor kids, but everything turns out okay. Lance’s POV is fun to read, too, even as things go very wrong.

All Hallow’s Eve by this_book_has_been_loved Words: 2,921 Author’s Summary: In which the Paladins discover that Keith’s birthday is only a week before Halloween My Comments: Aw, poor Keith. Everyone’s heart is in the right place, but things are hard, sometimes.

What Could Have Been by Crowoxy Words: 5,222 Author’s Summary: Lotor is only a few decaphoebs (years) younger than Allura and it was just easier for him to leave Daibaazal for Altea. A what-if scenario where if Lotor grew up on Altea, what changed and what stayed the same?Day 7 of the Platonic VLD Week - Free/ Alternate Universe My Comments: I felt bad for Lotor being so obviously neglected by his parents, but it was really nice to see him growing with Allura and Coran and Alfor as his family instead. Cool AU. I would read more of this concept, and I’m not even a huge fan of Lotor. I could see, with the right upbringing, his charisma and intelligence being used for good ends instead of his own ambition.

Snowtron by Eastofthemoon Words: 2,648 Author’s Summary: It had all started with five words. Five words that changed the entire course of the day. Five words Allura never imagined she would hear any paladins say while piloting their lions. “GIANT ROBOT LION SNOWBALL FIGHT!” My Comments: Holy fish balls, this is ADORABLE. I love Allura getting dragged into Earthling shenanigans, and the ending scene with Lotor and crew was icing on the cake. The snowy, snowy cake.

A Gremlin In Glasses Swoops In To Save The Day by Kabber, this_book_has_been_loved Words: 2,752 Author’s Summary: First installment in a Percy Jackson AU for Voltron. In which Lance and Hunk discover that they may not be entirely human My Comments: Really fun action scene for an AU that is just FULL of possibilities. I especially adore Pidge swooping in to save Hunk and Lance. Exciting and intriguing read.

The Opposite of Sorrow by nightwalker for HumanTrampoline Words: 6,165 Author’s Summary: Shiro takes a hit from a druid spell that causes its victims to just quietly give up and die. Fortunately he’s got six good reasons to keep fighting. My Comments: The spell Shiro gets hit with is basically weaponized depression, and it’s pretty terrifying. But the solution is hugs and cuddling and bonding time, and I am all kinds of down for that kind of cure. Extremely sweet and heartwarming fic, and Keith’s POV is wonderful.

let the fog burn let my wick fray by imperiality Words: 4,501 Author’s Summary: Little bonfires are little things Keith and Pidge do. He can’t look away from the flames, Pidge can’t seem to get what he’s after. But then she wants to spice it up on a Halloween night. This purple fog is oppressive. My Comments: Interesting and different way to study Keith and emotionally hurt him at the same time. It’s a good thing his team came after him.

Grateful for the Years to Come by Ms_Marchy Words: 4,001 Author’s Summary: Five years after saying goodbye to her son, Maria McClain gets the greatest gift of being reunited with her son. Everyone knows Lance worries over how much he missed in his family’s lives. No one ever thinks about what Maria was missing about her son’s life. She didn’t even know herself until one day two giant mechanical lions land near her house. The Space War is finally over. Everyone can go home. My Comments: This was heartbreaking and heartwarming in equal measure. It’s sad to see just how much years of war scarred Lance, but it’s also wonderful to see him at home and loved with his family again, and his mother’s perspective is lovely and warm. Ambiguous Klance.

And My Nightmares Will Have Nightmares Every Night by ardett Words: 9,096 Author’s Summary: Restart program? A series of alternate paths in the Dream, Seam series. My Comments: Really cool and unique way of showing a bunch of ways this story could have gone really, really wrong. Or, well, wrong from a certain perspective. I adore this, though it hurts me, like a lot. Warning for major character death, though it doesn’t really stick.

With These Hands by A_Zap Words: 1,486 Author’s Summary: Despite all the trouble they’d been through, Hunk figured everything had turned out all right. After all, he and Lance had managed to return to the castle! Then Hunk sees the bruises and knows that things are not as good as he thought. My Comments: Great missing scene that we were totally robbed of in canon. I love these sweet summer boys and their relationship so much. Surprisingly more hurt!Hunk than hurt!Lance, actually, but I love both flavors.

She’s Looking A Little Green by spitfire00 Words: 3,936 Author’s Summary: Katie Holt was born to pilot the Green Lion, and her father knows it- Even if he doesn’t realize it. My Comments: Great, great Sam POV, and a wonderful Holt reunion in here too. Really cool look at the paladins and their fateful uniqueness.

Bruising Waters by TheStoryVerse Words: 17,743 Author’s Summary: Never tell a Soul. Never Let Yourself Be Seen. His mother’s words had been pounded into Lance’s head from birth; a warning to prepare him and keep his family safe. He’s managed to hide from the Garrison and even in space. But, much to Lance’s chagrin, the universe has other plans. When Lance contracts an alien virus while out on a diplomatic mission that starts attacking his Mer form, Lance figures it’s just a “space cold”. He brushes off the others’ worry and tries to continue as normal. But the pain is getting worse with each passing day, and he hasn’t had a moment’s peace alone to change forms and see what could be causing it. When everything finally hits the fan, the team quickly finds that Lance is in much worse condition than they had assumed. Lance is not only dying, but he’s changing right in front of their eyes.So much Hurt and Whump in the first chapter. So much good Bonding and Comfort in the next two. Let’s do this y'all! (Sorry, Lance) My Comments: This is some PRIMO hurt!Lance, lemme tell ya. A unique form of whump, and holy crow is is brutal. It gets kinda gross too, just to warn you. But the bonding and comfort and in the second two chapters more than makes up for it. Maybe a touch over the top at times, but darned if I didn’t enjoy every moment. Totally satisfying and highly recommended to hurt!Lance afficionados. You know who you are.

Wide Awake by taylor_tut Words: 1,373 Author’s Summary: From an anon request on my tumblr: Lance catches a bug that keeps him awake. When he’s not allowed to train during the day with everyone else, he tries to do it alone at night. It goes about as well as you’d think. My Comments: Aw, poor Lance. Great little sickfic with an unusual premise.

With Hands Tied Backwards by GibbousLunation Words: 6,684 Author’s Summary: Lance had this problem, just sometimes, where his brain got all floaty and his hands started feeling like maybe he’d forgotten to put them on properly in the morning. Like they were backwards and inverted and everything else was upside down too. Lance’s eyes slide out of focus staring at twinkling stars thousands of miles away, he lines his knuckles up in neat little rows, and he thinks too much about too many things. Team Voltron is falling apart in little ways, and building itself up taller ten times over. It started as a joke, “You know what would suck?“ It was easier to pretend they weren’t just kids fighting a war they’d never asked for, probably. "Angry edgy Not-Slav giving you CPR with his beak.” My Comments: Poignant and emotional exploration of Lance dealing with trauma-induced dissociation, and the kind of messed up games kids in war play to distract themselves from the threat of death while still acknowledging that it’s there. Klance that starts out ambiguous and then gets much less ambiguous, but could possibly still be read as gen. The point is survival, not romance.

Immunity by RiRiMania1335 Words: 2,165 Author’s Summary: Keith hardly ever gets sick. But if he does, it hits him like a truck. My Comments: Aw, poor Keith. He gets sick so rarely that he truly and sincerely believes that he’s dying, haha. Fortunately the others are there are to reassure him and take care of him.

Bonds by this_book_has_been_loved Words: 1,470 Author’s Summary: At first, it was subtle enough that none of them realized it. The bond with their Lions—that was obvious. Lance had felt it pretty much as soon as he laid eyes on the Blue Lion, and the rest of them had all had similar experiences. It was the bond with each other that was harder to pick up on. My Comments: I really like how this fic explores the concept of a psychic bond into the current canon, with all of the changes and disruptions and how that affects everyone.

Platonic VLD Week 3 - Oneshot Collection by hufflepirate Words: 10,865 Author’s Summary: WARNING: HEREIN BE S4 SPOILERS Day 1: Sleep/Nightmare - Pidge never wanted to share a room with Matt, but now that they have nightmares sharing’s not so bad. Day 2: Inside/Outside - Set mid-4.1 - Kolivan comforts Keith after the decoy ship blows up. Day 3: Tricks/Treats - Matt plays a trick on Team Voltron (a t-Rick) Day 4: Supernatural/Horror - Keith has an uncanny encounter with some Altean soldiers Day 5: Change/Growth - Hunk helps Allura learn more about piloting her lion [S3] Day 6: Distance/Proximity - Tag to 3.4 - After Allura returns, Coran hovers a little too close (Day 7: Alternate reality/Free is separate and the next fic in my platonicvldweek series.) My Comments: I love everything this author does, and this collection of little fics is like a kaleidoscope of Good Stuff. My favorites are probably day 2 and day 4, but they are all good and worth reading.

Old Soldier and Spy by Crowoxy Words: 1,874 Author’s Summary: Kolivan is the old spy who watches all of these young children grow into this war that’s been happening for ten thousand years. Day 5 of the Platonic VLD Week: Growth My Comments: I love this view of Kolivan as a wise, compassionate mentor for young soldiers, and his perspective on both Keith and Lotor is lovely and kind.

The Fear Of Falling Apart by this_book_has_been_loved Words: 3,211 Author’s Summary: Lance has feelings of inadequacy My Comments: This is so cute, and exactly how I want the relationship between Pidge, Matt, and Lance to develop in canon. I want them all to be wonderful siblings and appreciate each other and have fun playing video games. Pidge has two big brothers and it’s wonderful.

My favorite is probably the Old Dogs Sanctuary AU, but they are all good.

Where Light and Dark Meet by squirenonny for Pechat Words: 34,168 Author’s Summary: The Fallen One arises: A captive star yearning for the heavens from which it was stolen… So begins the Prophecy of the Fallen Star, which speaks of the one who will save the kingdom from Haggar’s curse. Lance, Keith, and their friends are summoned to get in touch with Allura, the deposed princess of Altea, who is widely believed to be the Fallen Star from the prophecy. But things aren’t going to be quite so simple. Lance was cursed to become a cat at night; Keith spends his days as a crow. They both have a role to play in the coming battle, and they’re going to have to learn to trust each other–but how can they when they only ever meet in the fleeting moments at twilight when they both are human? My Comments: Klance and implied future Kallurance. I ADORE squirenonny’s fics, especially her fantasy AUs. Such amazing worldbuilding, great descriptions and and plotting and characterization. This one has some really nice hurt!Lance and protective Hunk and Pidge, too, which I always appreciate. I’m very pleased that this is apparently going to be a series, so I’ll get to read more in this world eventually. Just a great, great read, highly addictive, couldn’t stop once I started. I love it when that happens.

Blast Zone by bubblebucky Words: 4,729 Author’s Summary: In the middle of a mission, a bomb going off leaves Lance unable to hear. Still, while he’s deaf, the rest of his team are the ones that won’t listen. My Comments: This hits all of my buttons SO HARD. It gave me that good ache in my chest, you know the one. The other characters may be sliiiightly OOC in order to really hammer the hurt in on Lance, but it didn’t ping my “back away immediately” sense the way woobification usually does. Instead it felt understandable for a high-stress situation and I accepted it. The almost too-severe pain heightened the emotions for me and made the ending all the more satisfying. I REALLY love this. I’ve already read it several times, especially the ending, and it’s definitely in my Favorite Fics folder.

Home and a Half by sarehptar Words: 84,407 (7/?) Author’s Summary: They make a mistake that follows them home. (Or: Keith becomes an unwitting caretaker to three Galra children, who teach him a great deal about how to take care of himself.) My Comments: I am reading fewer WIPs these days because there are so many completed fics I still haven’t gotten to but want to, but this was recced to me so it moved to the top of my priority list, and I’m so glad I gave it a shot. This is far from a fluffy baby acquistion fic, with a lot of moral questions and deep consideration of mature themes, which makes the fic more bittersweet and heartwrenching than cute, though there are plenty of cute moments, too. It’s incredibly well-written and interesting, and the latest chapters have really brought some fun worldbuilding and adventure elements. I was afraid it was abandoned, but the author assures me it is not, and I’m really looking forward to continuing to follow this story to completion.

After seeing first photos of new VKs: Oh lit, I remember China Anne McClain from years ago, and they got that dude from The Lodge. Aye they look badass.

After watching What's My Name Lyric Video: Thomas Doherty rapping must mean he's like a second-in-command or something. Possible romance? Maybe? Nah, I'm just fooling myself.

After watching What's My Name Music Video: Okay, do ya'll see the way they look at each other? And her not so subtly touching his shoulder while he's rapping? Her winking? This is definitely shippable.

After watching What's My Name behind the scenes: SHE RAN HER HAND THROUGH HIS HAIR!!! HOW IS THIS NOT CANON?!!

After reading Rise of the Isle of the Lost: He literally flirts with her on a daily basis, calls her darling, and she admits to never hurting his feelings. I think I have signed up to go down with this ship, and I ain't talking about the Lost Revenge.

After watching Descendants 2: I've been eaten alive by this ship, and I am consumed by their adorableness. Every single moment of them together is shippable material. ALL ELSE IS IRRELEVANT! Bye friends, see ya'll in 3 years! Remember, you can't spell Human without Huma!

Descending Into Good and Evil

Project Runway Season 16, Episode 5

The Challenge: The designers must create a look that is inspired by either good or evil.

{ Prelude }

Tondy: This should be fun, Bolo! The challenge is issued by guest judges, Dove Cameron and Chyna Anne McClain, who are in the new Disney made-for-TV movie, Descendants II. Michael, as the winner of last week’s PR, gets to pick who must design which choice of Good or Evil. Bolo: I am definitely looking forward to this one. It’s fun to see how the designers will interpret “good” and “evil” in their looks, and there’s a lot of wiggle room for them to get creative and show off what they can do.

{ The Workroom }

Tondy: There are some intriguing designs and materials! Some of the designers are upset with their fabric choices, and most of them seem to be struggling a bit. Tim is worried that many are heading down the dreaded “costumey” (how in the heck do you spell that, Bolo?) path…

Bolo: Yeah... that’s the drawback to a challenge like this. Fewer restrictions and a dramatic theme is a recipe for costume calamity. I see some odd things happening on those dress forms... a few good things, too!

{ The Runway }

Shawn

Tondy: I don’t care for Shawn, but, I must admit, she is starting to design some pretty cool stuff. This dress is a pretty good “Evil” dress, and I love the soft draped fabric over it. Score: 4.0

Bolo: I love this look. It’s really well made, it’s different, the black and eggplant look amazing together, and it has a good “evil” vibe. Score: 4.0

Kentaro

Tondy: I like this and I love the flow, but for me there is a real lack of innovation here. That said, I do love the material and the color gradations! Score: 3.75

Bolo: I think this is really lovely, but at the same time--you’re right, Tondy, it’s kind of bland. Still, I think it makes a nice “good” look. Score: 3.75

Margarita

Tondy: Well, I love this one, and what I love the best about it is that you can tell that the model loves it too! I wasn’t impressed with the material, but she really “made it work” beautifully! Score: 4.0

Bolo: LOVE this look! The model looks stunning, it fits her well and hugs her in all the right places. Very dramatic “evil” look, but soft and flirty, too. Score: 4.5

Brandon

Tondy: Wow! Talk about mixed emotions on this one! I love the striped fabric, and I would absolutely love pillows on my deck that were made from it. I just don’t get this dress. All I can say is it smacks of costumey with the bows on the sleeves, and I do NOT get that white top and I hate side-boobage! I marked him up for the cute little suspender thingie in the back, though. Score: 2.75

Bolo: Mixed feelings here, too. I adore the fabric and I like the combination with the white top. I like the idea of the top, the way it halters over the skirt and hangs open in back. I just don’t dig the distinctively NOT “little princess” side boob. I also hate the straps tied around the sleeves. It makes me think of a straight jacket. All of this ruins the “good” aesthetic for me.  Score: 3.0

Samantha

Tondy: Not one of my favorite designs, and I get why Tim said it looked like a craft project. The skirt helped, but, overall, not a hit for me. Score: 3.0

Bolo: I actually really liked the idea of this look and I thought it was a unique interpretation. I just wish it fit better and that the flare started lower. Score: 3.25

Aaron

Tondy: Well, this was truly awful. I think he knew where he was going, but he got lost along the way. Sadly, even if the design worked, the lack of finishing would have doomed it for sure. The looks on the judges’ faces, though, get a solid 5+ stars from me! But, for the design: Score: 2.5

Bolo: This was such a disaster. It’s like he just gave up and threw every piece of fabric he had onto a random jumpsuit. The sewing was not good. Score: 2.0

Michael

Tondy: This one blew me away! Another one where you can tell the model feels great in this design!  And, that headpiece absolutely blew me away! Score: 5.0

Bolo: So stunning! Great interpretation of “evil” and such a beautiful dress. The feathers are just a nice bonus! Score: 5.0

Amy

Tondy: I am hoping she got confused and thought this design was for Heidi’s sleepwear line, because I think it would have been really nice for that. The nightie underneath didn’t even fit that well... Score: 3.0

Bolo: I agree... this would have been great in the sleepwear challenge, but I don’t get it as a “good” look at all. The color in back of the robe confuses the absolute hell out of me. How does that relate to anything? Score: 3.0

Batani

Tondy: Loved, loved, loved it! The skirt, the lace on top, the fit! Loved the sparkly trim on the front, and I loved the sheer floaty train. Score: 5.0

Bolo: Also stunning! Nice fit, beautiful design, great interpretation of “evil,” and just overall interesting to look at. I love it! Score: 5.0

Claire

Tondy: Aaacckk! So bad. I know she struggled, but really, this is not a design that I would expect to see on PR. I just don’t get the “sheer skirt over short shorts” look at all! It’s just dreadful as was this design. (Zac’s look for this one topped his look for Aaron’s design. Score: 3.0

*jaw drop* Bolo: I don’t get this design at all and agree that shorts under sheer is not a good look. The top looks like it’s falling apart. It’s all poorly made. Score: 2.75

Ayana

Tondy: I was so disappointed in this design. I wish she hadn’t added the flowers. I did love the top and the fit of it. She sort of saved the skirt when she added the white net over it, but somehow it just didn’t work. Score: 3.0

Bolo: I liked the dress so much better before she added the netting and flowers. I thought it was just lovely then, and I don’t know why Tim called the uniformity into question. I think it all worked great as it was. Score: 3.5

Kenya

Tondy: Wow! This is a great evil look, and I like that it’s not black like most of the other “evil” looks. And that back! Breathtaking! Score: 5.0

Bolo: SO MUCH WOW! This was my favorite look of the night. She looks like a badass pirate captain you’d better not double-cross. So well done! Score: 5.0

{ Afterthoughts }

Tondy: Well, Bolo, this was a personal first for me! I think this is the first time that I have ever given out more than one 5* in one episode, but I know for sure that I have never given out three 5*s in one episode! Anyway, Claire was VERY resentful of the fact that she was in the bottom three, and Shawn didn’t look relieved at all that she was safe. I really have had it with Claire. At least Shawn has a some talent! I also am sick of Claire and Amy critiquing everyone else! The can do that once they make it into the top 6, but not if they are spending their time in the basement. Wise up, ladies!!  You’re not as good as you think you are….

Bolo: This was certainly an interesting episode. Several of the designers took the inspiration and flew with it. Others let it drag them down. Once again, I think the strongest designers are rising to the top... which is not to say I think Brandon deserved to be in the top tonight, much less win. But this wouldn’t be the first time we disagreed with the judges. He’s clearly “teacher’s pet” as far as they’re concerned, and like all of their “pets,” he could poop on a plate and they’d call it high fashion. :\

"No. He has minute left", Pidge say and someone comes in. "I am so sorry. Did you wait long?" Lance asks. "I let him leave little early", Hunk answers. "Good. Let's go Keith", Lance says. He looks so good. Like how are those eyes eaven more blue that earlier? "Something in my face?" he asks when I can't stop staring. "Oh. No! Let's go", I say and follow him out listening Pidge snicker behind me. L: Keith looks... is it wrong to say beautiful? Because that's what he is. Beautiful. "You can actually drive whit that thing?" he says and snaps me out of my thoughts again. "What?" I ask and he points my Toyota Corolla. Blue car sure looks old but no one makes fan of her. "Excuse me. She is beautiful. There is no better car than Blue", I say. Keith starts to laugh. "OMG! You named you car?" he asks eaven if it's hard because of all that laughing. "You haven't named that dead machine?" I asks and he stops laughing. "You didn't die today, did you", he says. "Not my point. Her name?" I say. "There is no name", he answers. "We need to fixe that. How about Red?" I ask and open my car's doors. "My bike is mostly black", Keith says. "Yeah? You did bye her because of those red stripes, didn't you", I say. "Maby", he answers. "Win for me. So it's Red then", I say. K: "So... you live alone?" Lance asks when silence grouws too much for him. "Yeah. Shiro moved out two years ago", I say. "He lives with Allura then?" Lance asks and I just nod. "How about you?" I ask. "Yeah. All alone", he answers. "You say it like it's a bad thing", I say and he looks at me. "It makes me paranoid. It's not home with out noise", he says. "You have many siblings then?" I ask. "Five. And so many cousins. Christmas is so bad that you would die", he answers and laughs. "Good to now", I say and smile a little. L: There it is. Keith's rare smile. It makes his face look so soft. "I made you something", I say and give him the blue bracelet. "You made this? For... me?" he asks. "Yeah. You are my friend now", I say and little blush appeared to Keith cheeks. So adorable. "Thank you Lance", he says. He examines the bracelet whit a smile and my heart skips a beat. K: I love my new bracelet. It's same blue as Lance's eyes. It's perfect. "What are we gonna do?" I ask. "It's a surprise", Lance says and winks at me. "Lance?" I say. "Life a little. It's fun. I promise", he answers. His phone rings. "Lance", he answers. "Mamà!?" He says after a moment. "No! Mamà!" he says. "Si mamà" he says after women has stopped yelling in Spanish. "Te amo mamá", he says when call ends. "Your mom?" I ask. L: Why mom? "She wants to meet you", I say and Keith turns paler than normal. "She what?" Keith asks and I groan. "She... my sister maby told everyone that I finally found my soulmate. It's big deal for her", I say. I wait him to freak out on me. "You think she will be disappointed?" Keith asks. "What?" I ask and stop the car. "Why you stopped?" Keith asks. "You think my mom would be disappointed with you?" I ask. " Well, I am collage drop out", he says. "How owns badass motorcycle and could always start over because is like super smart", I say and he blush. "You think Red is badass?" he asks and is my turn to blush. "I mean... yes", I say. "Wait a minute! You called her Red!" I yell. "Well you did name her that" he says and big smile grows on my face. "Happy you like it. Let's go that we can leave", I say and see his small smile again. K: Lance's family home is huge. Yellow house looks like it's full of love. "I have to say that my family is crazy", Lance says when opening the door. "Lance!!!" someone yells and two kids jump on him. "Mateo! Josie!" he says and hugs them tightly. "Where is mamà?" He asks when they let him go. "In the kitchen", Josie says and sees me first time. "How is that pretty boy whit long hair?" she asks and make me blush. Pretty? "This is Keith", Lance answers. "Hi Keith. Is that hair all yours?" small boy asks. "Yes. It is", I say and he looks at it whit big eyes. "Wow!" he says. "Lance my boy", short women says whit strong Spanish accent. "Mamà!" he yells and run for a hug. So much hugging. L: Keith looks uncomfortable standing at the door. "El es Keith?" my mom asks. "Sì", I answer. "El es hermoso", she says. "Mamá! Keith is pretty!" Josie says. I can see how red he is. "I... Hi", he says. My mom smiles. "You two come in. I need to know how you met", she says. "Mamà. We have no time for this!" I complain and she looks little hurt. "We can stay for moment", Keith says. "Wonderful. Come in", mom says and walks to the kitchen. K: The house is warm and full of life. All this noice makes my head spin. "My name is Rosa Sanchez but you Keith can call me Rosa", Lance's mum says. "Oh. Nice to meet you... Rosa?" I say and she smiles. "So how did you two meet?" She asks. Well this is story I really don't know how to tell. Luckily Lance have no proplem doing so. "We actually knew each others back in highshool. We never talk whit each other at that time. It was mutual missunderstanding. We met again today and talked it out", Lance tells. "You leave out the part where you hold on to me whit all you had", I say. "How drives like that? I was terrified!" he says. "And then you just run off", I say. "I thought you hated me!" he says. "Me too, but I didn't run off", I say. "This time", Lance adds. "You fight like married couple", girls voice cuts in. "Cleo. It was so cute", Rosa says. "Mamà!" Lance says. "Hi Keith. I'm Cleo. The coolest McClain", girl says. "In you dreams!" Lance says. L: Keith starts to relax and I can see that he likes my mom. Sure, she loves him like he is her own son. Who wouldn't like that? "We really need to go now" I say when huge clock says it's 8pm already. "Have fun boys" mom says when we leave. "Don't do anything I wouldn't" Cleo yells. "Hate you too!" I yell back to her. "You okay there Keith?", I ask and he jumps a little. "I... is it nice to have so many people in you life how loves you that much?" he asks cheeks burning. "Oh. Yeah. It's great. Sure we fight a lot but we all still know that we love each other", I say and look at him. "All I had was Shiro. My adoptive parents didn't really like me. They did it just because my mom was related", Keith says. "That's why you and Shiro have different last names", I say and he nods. "Well now you have friends who care", I say and he smiles. Lance Week: Comfort

Day Three/7-25-17: Love/Comfort

Being a part of Voltron was badass. Seriously badass. Fighting evil aliens in space with a semi-sentient space lion that could form into a giant, Galra-destroying mecha? Undeniably badass. This was the coolest thing that Lance would ever do in his entire life, and he took solace in the fact that if he survived this war he would make sure his family was telling his story for generations.

Another thing that was undeniable about being a part of Voltron? It was stressful. Seriously stressful. Like, pull out your own hair and scream into the void stressful. You could see it on their faces, and in their body language. Left alone without a way to decompress for too long, and any of the team members got twitchy and irritable real quick.

In a situation this stressful, having a source of comfort was 100% necessary. Everybody had their own way of it. Lance could get into how each member of the team comforted themselves, but really, that was their business. The only comfort routine he needed to worry about was his own.

It was a five step process he had affectionately labeled "The Lance McClain Strategy of Not Going Insane", or the LMSoNGI. The name was a work in progress. However, the name was the only thing that needed work, because the process was guaranteed to get Lance to stop freaking the fuck out, if just for the peace of mind needed to get through all of the steps.

First step: Get stressed. At first glance, it seemed like a weird requirement to a getting unstressed routine, but you needed to be stressed to un-stress. It was like any analogy about darkness and light, or warmth and cold. "You will never know true peace until you get stuck in space away from almost everybody you once knew and are forced to fight against an evil empire of purple cat people" or whatever.

Second step: Get rid of that extra energy. Considering that the thing that stressed Lance out the most was their near-death experiences involving Voltron, this was a necessary step. He'd always been fairly good at keeping his cool during bad situations, something that he was intensely proud of, but even the coolest person on the planet (so to speak) was bound to get a little worked up after the kinds of battles they participated in. Stretching, running, doing laps in the blue lion. Lance did whatever he had to do to work off all of the extra energy in his system, once he was sure it was safe to do so. His preferred method would have been doing laps in the pool, but he still hadn't managed to figure out how that worked and was honestly kind of scared to find out.

After that was step number three, obviously, which was: Prep time! Eat Hunk's epic post-battle food, which was basically a constant since that was part of how Hunk comforted himself. Then, make sure everybody knew he was going to disappear for at least a couple hours, just in case. He would also make sure he had everything he needed, so he didn't have to stop midway because ugh, why?

Then came the best step, which was step number four: Relax. Lance would strip out of his tight and semi-uncomfortable armor and put on the much better and more comfortable outfit of a bathrobe, pajama pants, and adorable blue lion slippers. He liked rubbing at the marks the armor made, because it gave him a strange sense of something like catharsis. Seeing the marks the battle had left, maybe, and knowing that he was okay. He would do the same with whatever injuries he had obtained, if any; just looking them over, prodding them lightly and reassuring himself that he was okay.

Then he would go take a bath. Water almost hot enough to scald his skin, and he always made sure to close the door so that whatever steam built up stayed in the bathroom. Inhaling the steamy air was always nice, and it seemed all Altean soaps were scented with some scent or another. Normally it was the same floral scent, like a strangely pleasant mix of lavender and hydrangea that Coran had told him was the juniberry flower. It was a nice scent.

The heat of the bath normally did wonders for his muscles, and besides that it normally completed the goal of step two, and long as Lance had completed step two correctly. It drained him of energy in the best way possible, leaving him happily sleepy instead of dreadfully tired, like he would normally be after battles such as that.

Once he was finished with the bath, he would go through with a couple other things before lying down to sleep his troubles away. Face mask, of course, because it reminded him of his older sisters and also he liked having a soft face. Music through the headphones he had so blessedly salvaged from Pidge, who was a gem. Readjusting his pillows and blankets into perfect formation. And then, he would crawl into his nest and go to sleep, and honestly? It was perfect.

The first few battles/hard training sessions had left him drained as hell, but when Lance went to bed straight out of the lion he woke up almost worse than when he had went to sleep. That kind of stress didn't go away with a nap, and going to sleep while still riding on a battle high was no way to live. It was breathtaking how much of a difference a little stretching and a bath could do, and taking that one step further was Lance's definition of comfort and self-care. It really made a difference.

And all of that carried on the the final step, step five: Clean up. It sounded odd, but cleaning up was a comfort all its own. Wiping the goo off his face, making his bed, making sure the bathroom was clean, and changing back into his normal clothes was a process all its own. It was like washing away the final, lingering bits of stress that clung to him despite his best efforts. Maybe… starting a new slate. Making sure he had a clean environment to work in was insanely calming for some reason, as was making sure he himself was clean. It was cleansing, if you will.

Maybe not his best pun, but he was still proud of it.

At the end of the day, Lance supposed it was nice to pick up and look around, and see everything in his little space clean and nice and how it was supposed to be. It was a welcome bit of stability in the otherwise tumultuous chaos that had become his life. Really, cleaning up was as important to Lance as step number four, though he could argue that all of the steps were equally important, because it signaled a sort of end. Sort of like, you went through this, you survived, you de-stressed, and now you're done and you can move on. Everything is as it's supposed to be. Take a deep breath, and continue forward.

That was the real comfort, honestly. Knowing that he had put something behind him, and that he had accomplished something. They were making progress, however small. Every time he went through this routine there was an additional bit of comfort in the fact that they had done it, they had won the day, they had helped people, and they were on their way to their end goal, whatever that was.

Comfort was complicated. Everybody had their own way of going about it, and Lance was lucky to have figured out a routine to it. He was still fine-tuning, of course, but he was proud of the LMSoNGI, even if he still had to work of the name. It was his own method, and it wouldn't work for everyone, but it worked for him, and that was enough.

My opinions on Season 7

Please do not come at me. I just want to let people know my opinions of the season (because I actually really liked it) and I don’t want any discourse.

I just want to start with the big one; people saying that we were Queer-baited. I was not one of those people that were pissed of by this. It was clear that Adam said he would leave Shiro if he went on the Kerberos mission, and he did. I am happy with how it was dealt with; Shiro came back to find Adam dead because he defended Earth. While I wish that they could have gotten closure / seen each other again. But still, I am not upset with how it all went down.

Lance’s sister is a straight up badass. And I am so glad we got to see Lance with his family again (I was crying so much).

Hunk got a great character arc, albeit short. Hunk got to be a strong character and we got to learn more about him and his family, which I loved.

The Holt’s together as a smart, badass family (plus Matt at the end with his long hair) was amazing. I love how we got to properly meet Pidge’s mum. And it is kinda clear how Pidge and Matt absorbed their mum into their personalities.

I adored learning more about Keith and Shiro’s relationship. It was beautiful and will hopefully finally shut up Sh**ce shippers.

I’m not really going to voice opinions on ships other than the face that i love A||urance (spelt with lines to avoid unnecessary discourse) and that even Veronica ships it. I don’t want S8 to shove it down out throats but i will be more than happy for it to happen.

Allura, Romelle and Coran on earth and being confused about earth things is my favourite thing. and Romelle is the voice of reason and literally me.

THE MFD PILOTS. THEY HAVE THE COOLEST DYNAMIC AND I JUST LOVE THEM. AND THEY ARE ALL SO ATTRACTIVE. MY BI HEART CAN’T TAKE IT.

When he arrived smack dab in the middle of the Castle’s sleep cycle, Coran met him in the hangar.

I think my favorite is "The post-it note was bright yellow, almost glowing in the dim light of the hallway." I don't really think of my writing as being particularly 'visual' or 'image-rich' but that image was so clear in my mind when I wrote it, and I think it sparks interest in the story as well as ties the idea of 'Lance' to the concept of being a bright spot in Shiro's life.

Ayyy, thank you for reading my bthb! Keep your eyes out for my next bthb submission - it’ll be coming real soon. Anyways, here’s some fics I think you’ll like reading, anon! I tried picking out as much BAMF!Lance whump fics as I could. Please shoot me another ask if you want some more!

Hit The Bull’s Eye Single chaptered, but fantastic plot and some great bamf moments and really good recovery.

Am-Badass-Ador McClain I cannot recommend this highly enough. Mostly a recovery fix, but with some well-written whump and bamf moments. Long fic with a brilliant plot. post s8 but better. 

Neon Planet Told in Keith’s POV, but it’s entered around Lance’s experience with a life-altering event. Brilliant ending. 

Third Time’s The Charm Do you like whump, time-loops and fantastic pacing? This one is hands down for you. This is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

As Color Fades Away I know I’ve recommended this one many times, but Color (or Colour, if you’re Aussie like me) is perhaps one of my favourite vld fics. Great whump, recovery, and seriously good bamf moments.

Past the Mourning Sun This fic just finished today and omg does it give everything you want. great worldbuilding, plot, and an ending that promises more in store.

I Don’t Wanna Be Your Hero (I Just Wanna Fight With Everyone Else) (wip) Superhero AU that has a surprising amount of whump, but with a brilliant plot and some absolutely fantastic BAMF!Lance moments. I can’t recommend this enough.

made of stone (wip) One of the darker fics here, this one is a fic where there’s whump in basically every chapter and a good post-captured fic.

Echo a Spark Canon-divergence fic with Kuron as a plot device and featuring Lance who actually does something in s6. 

29 day Whump Challenge Even though this isn’t technically all one story, each one of these chapters has some brilliant Lance whump that was really fun to read.

The Sea In Between (wip)  Another post-captured fic, but gives great detail into both the team and Lance’s time in captivity.

The Vacant Ether (wip) Post s8 whump that includes the dire repercussions of Lance’s brush with death. Horror-centred and well-written. 

Power (series) A wingfic series that features some of my favourite tropes: Black Paladin Lance, whump involving wings, and a cool plot.

Consent (wip) Another, darker fic that delves into prolonged manipulation and the darker side of Lotor. Heed the warnings, but the plot is great.

Water in his veins A fantasy-like AU in the canonverse. Less whumpy, but has some real good bamf moments. 

Brand New Blue (wip) A canon-divergence where Lance came to space before canon events. While still ongoing, it has some really good moments. 

Charmed Again, heed the warnings on this fic. This is a historical-AU that has a lot of whump but not so much BAMF!Lance content, through it’s really well written.

Protect Your Own A fic that portrays the morally dubious Lions tropes fantastically. I cannot recommend this enough if you do like that sort fo thing.

Songbird An absolute classic with beautiful imbedded art, great whump, 

The Heart Of Voltron Mostly whump fic that focuses more on the team’s pov, but has some really good moments. 

The King’s Beasts  THIS! reading this always sends shivers down my spine. 10/10 would recommend. 

the water was dark (and it went down forever) Sorry to plug in my own fic, but technically this does have some whump and BAMF!Lance content. 

Oceans Away (series) If you like memory loss related fics, this one is definitely for you. Ten Years of Depravity (series) A series that has some good whump fics in them and some bamf content too. Check this one out!
