Pirate WIP

I’m writing a historical fiction pirate manuscript that’s coming along amazingly and would like to share the overall synopsis of the story.

It’s 1715, the island of Nassau is ripe with pirates. When a brash young captain named Declan Payne besieges a French fort, he discovers a plot that could wipe out the pirate republics. He and the crews of the islands must evade the threat of the Spanish armada, the British royal navy and the French fleets as they try to unravel the maelstrom of chaos that is the new world.

Our Greenville, SC, minor league team, the DRIVE, is battling for its first baseball championship in many years. I’m a big fan of people who play for pure pleasure. One afternoon in St. Petersburg, Florida, I stopped to watch Fred Broadwell waiting for a pitch, crouching over the strike zone, leaning into the wind, seemingly suspended. When the ball floated over the plate he chopped it toward the shortstop and shuffled off toward first base on stiff legs. It was a big day for Broadwell. A couple of years earlier he had been sidelined with pneumonia. Now he was back, at 95. "Go, Freddy!” yelled the crowd, as the shortstop stabbed the ball, fielding it on one hop and then stopping as his back stiffened. The 3rd baseman grabbed the ball from the shortstop’s glove and flipped it across the diamond. Fred Broadwell scuffed across the bag, a beat ahead of the ball. It was all in a day’s play for the Kids and Kubs. Those two teams had been battling each other three days a week, sixty games each winter, since 1931. Nobody on the field was under 75. "What’s the matter with seventy-five," they chanted. "We’re the boys who are still alive. Rah, rah, seventy-five." When these fellows talk about the great old players, they don’t mean DiMaggio, Gehrig, or Ruth; they’re talking about guys like Ed Forest, who stood on his head at home plate to celebrate his eightieth birthday, and Chappy Chapman, who got 144 hits one season. In the midst of winter these men had found an endless summer. A roar went up from the crowd as a grounder dribbled between the right fielder’s legs, and old Freddy shuffled toward home plate. Freddy Broadwell doffed his cap and winked after he crossed the plate. Sometimes there’s no defense against experience. “They can’t throw out a 95-year-old man?” His pal, George Bakewell shouted gleefully. Fans roared their approval. I often wonder what would I be doing today, had my grandfather, Paul Bailey, not loved to tell me stories? Growing up I spent summers with him in a little Kansas town with the lyrical name – Hiawatha.  Each evening, Grandpa would invite me to glide with him on the front porch swing and he would whirl me back into his past. “Did I ever tell you about our honeymoon?” “No.” “Your Grandma and I went to Salt Lake City.” “On your honeymoon?” I asked, wondering why. “We had two free train tickets.” “Oh.” “Anyway, Grandma and I were nuzzling over a meal in the dining car.  A conductor swayed up, stopped and asked, ‘Where did you grow up?’” “I answered, ‘Ridgeway, Ohio.’” “How many brothers do you have?” “Nine.” “Your name Bailey?” “Yes.” “Well, I’m your brother, Vance.” Missing twenty years.  Vance was the oldest of the ten boys.  My Grandfather was the youngest, still a baby when Vance went west looking for work.  He tried to get a job with the Great Northern Railroad, but noticed most of its employees had Norwegian surnames, so he changed his name from Bailey to Baileyson to better his chances.  The family’s letters to Vance Bailey were returned.  He never wrote home to tell them he had a new name. One of Grandpa’s most cherished possessions was an old penny postcard with a photograph taken on his honeymoon.  Paul and my grandmother, Marguerite, were wearing those old-fashioned spaghetti strapped swimsuits, floating on their backs in the Great Salt Lake. I'm back at Syracuse University for a second year of teaching how to tell a story. First class is Friday. We'll, "back" is not precise. Twenty-first century wizardry allows me to conduct the class from our new home in South Carolina. I'll be on campus for a week the end of October. I did just about everything there was to do at NBC News – investigative and political reporting, murder trials, natural disasters and anchorman.  I have flown through the night to cover earthquakes, hunkered into the winds of half a dozen hurricanes, twirled in a tiny boat on record floodwaters.  Once on the Cape Fear River in North Carolina, I floated past the tip of a crimson tree poking above the swollen river, teeming with red ants trying to survive.  The current carried thousands of dead hogs past me.  As I neared the Atlantic Ocean, the water turned red with their blood.  Hundreds of sharks lined the mouth of the river -- feasting. Just days before, I was aboard a plane inspecting damage in the Bahamas.  One of our two engines stopped in severe turbulence.  The aircraft dropped two thousand feet in seconds.  We soared over landing strips on several islands, runways looking like the aftermath of a Sigma Nu party, stuff tossed all over them.  At last, losing altitude and power, we limped into the Grand Bahamas airport, found a few feet of clear asphalt and landed safely.  I jumped down and did my best Pope impression, bowing to kiss the tarmac.  The pilot popped out with a ball peen hammer. "I'll have this fixed in no time!" he smiled.  "You'll be back in Miami to feed out your story." I flagged down a taxi. "Hey, where are going?" "Bye, bye," I called as the cab pulled away.  "That's my last flight in that plane." I turned to the driver. "Take me to the phone company." We slid in behind the crew from ABC News.  Their producer told me, "Sorry, we've booked all the satellite time between now and your Nightly News." I had dodged death.  I could get around ABC. "Okay, I'll wait," I said, dialing my New York producer to tell him what had happened. Ten minutes later the ABC News team drove off to shoot their correspondent's on camera live shot.  I ran inside and found the ABC tape editor. "Hey, Bob, what's up?" The editor knew me.  She had been a student of mine at a National Press Photographers workshop. "Long day, getting longer,” I sighed.  “Your producer won't let me send my story to New York." "Give it to me," she said, grabbing the cassette out of my hand and grinning.  "The only perks we have left are those we give each other." In these turbulent times, we must not overlook the quiet, unassuming people who are the engine that runs America. The traits they share are the steel rails that connect this country. What follows is not my wisdom. It came from folks just like you. The ones I investigated over the past four decades, crisscrossing the country 4 million miles, reporting the American Story for the TODAY Show. I've listened, really listened to our people -- in all walks of life. Here then are ten qualities most of us have in common: WILLING TO EXPLORE: These quiet Americans face each day with the same spirit that pulled our ancestors to these shores, a willingness to explore new places and opportunities. It is part of their geography of hope. VALUE TEAMWORK: Few pioneers dared to face the dangers of the Oregon Trail alone. They knew the value of teamwork. So do their descendants. They are a giving people who work together and find ways to make life around them better. SEEK AND DO GOOD: They open their hearts and minds to the possibilities of life rather than dwelling in negativity and pity. “What can I do to help?” doesn’t have to be a sacrifice, they told me that simple little things can make a big difference in the world. FOLLOW THROUGH ON PROMISES: They honor their commitments. You could build a house on their word alone. PERSISTENT, YET PRACTICAL: Their days are filled with a “can-do” pride, but they don’t just redouble efforts when something fails. They work smart, looking for different ways to succeed. CHERISH IMAGINATION: They encourage new ideas. Doesn’t matter who discovers them. There’s no limit to what people can do, if they don’t care who gets the credit. WELCOME CHANGE: They live out beyond the limits of their settled lives, making modifications that strengthen communities. EMBRACE OUR DIFFERENCES: Differences don’t divide successful Americans. They know that input from people of diverse circumstances can help us find solutions more quickly, since each person brings a variety of life experience. They understand that one of our greatest strengths is crafting good ideas out of conflicting viewpoints. They find solutions by working together. DON’T DWELL ON LOSS: They find a reason every morning to refute failure and seek new possibilities. They do what needs to be done instead of turning away because they thought the problem was overwhelming. HAPPINESS: They search each day for what will make them smile. It is a constant in their lives. That’s been my beacon, too, all these years. I sought the America in which I grew up. It’s still there, out beyond the Interstate exit ramp, where kids are taught to help one another and make the world better.
