My 2023 Reading List
Here's the books and articles that I read in 2023 (a large part of which was a push to finish my dissertation). I thought it might also be useful to others to see what my workload looks like as a 7th year grad student in a PhD. program, especially since I'm unmedicated with severe ADHD. This is what I'm able to get done while fighting through that. I bring this up because I know that it can seem fucking impossible, most notably when we see our neurotypical colleagues churning through incredible amounts of research. A final note: two of the books I'm including in here are books that I started reading in 2022 (Kagan and Stock). Also, note that many of these are re-reads; I've marked these with an Asterisk, and a couple of the books I read around 90%, but dropped a couple chapters that weren't relevant for my projects. These are marked with two asterisks. Be aware that my citations here are of a pretty rough and ready style. Philosophy has weird disciplinary standards (read, almost every journal is different), so I just have a "here's what you need to know to find it" style here. CW: I work on some dark things involving death, suicide, sexual assault, sex, race, and trans rights, including actively fighting trans-exclusive theorists, so there's a lot of possibly triggering things in here.

Teatra Recenzo: Inter-Actions
Tumblr media
Majo / Junio 2022, Stuttgart Theater Rampe: Danctrilogio "Inter-Action" Koreografo: Edan Gorlicki
1-a parto: Impact
Tre impona !
3- a parto: Molecular Scars
Denove performis Charlotte Petersen kaj Lorenzo Ponteprimo - nove: Catherine Guerin, Brigitta Schirdewahn Tobias Kelle. Do, ĉio da aĝoj (Tobias havas dek jaroj, Catherine ja la kvindeka kaj Brigitta havas 78 jarojn) estas presenta. Mi komprenis ... oni volas montri kiom malsame oni povas trakti cikatrojn. Sed por mi la prezentado estis cerborigardo. Mi vidis kiel sinapso interkomunikis. Kelkfoje kiel horlogmekanismo, kelkfoje kiel minaca erupcio. Kaj foje mi vidis novan penson aperi. Tre inspira!

Aretha Franklin by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara. Illustrated by Amy Blackwell
Tumblr media
Age Recommendation: Early Primary Topic/ Theme: Music, Biographic Setting: America Series: Little People, Big Dreams
Rating: 4/5
Aretha Franklin is one of those people that it was going to be difficult to write because of the amount of adversity she faced due to her race and gender in her career. Sánchez Vegara does well, giving nods to the societal issues in her life but focusing on her passion, on music. It is just a lovely way to present her story, showing her long career as best as possible. I appreciate Sánchez Vegara mentioning that Respect was not an original song for Aretha Franklin, it is one of the best-known covers with the original by Otis Redding.
There is a really simple detail on the cover I like, the use of the microphone cable for framing. Microphones are also the details on the endpages, microphones on a background the same colour as Little Aretha's dress on the cover. They tie in together better than any of the covers I've seen in a while. That peach colour and various shades of it are a theme throughout the book, it s a good choice and a nice colour. The only page that doesn't have at least a little of that colour somewhere is the page is the scene representing the death of Martin Luther King Jr. All the illustrations are really pretty. They suit the tone of Sánchez Vegara's text. I like the page with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the images are great representations of artists involved. Blackwell did particularly good work on the scene for Respect, I recognise that outfit.

Amelia is extremely cold and serious. She doesn’t talk much and always maintains a numb expression. Although, she can make anybody laugh with her un involuntary sarcasm. Although, it’s been known she never denies anybody a word or a shoulder to cry on, even if she’s not really close to The Team.
