The Iron Wizard
I was just thinking. You know how the narrative diverted us from Ironwood's more negative traits by constantly using Jacques Schnee as a foil? That we were so busy cheering to see the weaselly rich jerk getting shot down that we didn't pay much attention to the smug, bullying dictator in the making?
I can't help but wonder if we're not making the same mistake with Oz...

Foreword to Agatha All Along
After years of waiting, tomorrow witches, marks the anticipated start to Agatha All Along! But, before the first two episodes stream, it's time to take one last crack at discussing some possible theories (and hopes) for the series:
Akin to how Wandavision was an exploration of American Television sitcoms, this series is partially an exploration of depictions of witchcraft and referential to horror in pop culture (the Witched Witch and Glinda from the Wizard of Oz).
Is Rio dead? How does she seem to emerge from the ground on the side of the witches road? Did she and Agatha try to walk it long ago, and Rio perished, thus she is now trapped there forever?
At some point, Agatha will end up alone. She will be walking alone because either everyone has died, or those remaining leave. This however will not be indefinite.
Conversely, it could also recall the beginning when it was just her and the teen, but just the two of them make it out.
I keep thinking of that scene with her and the teen in the metal room, where they both appear to be in patient gowns. Are they in facilities at S.W.O.R.D.? Is the teen crying because Agatha is making him walk through memories and realize his identity?
Agatha's knowledge of the road is either from the Darkhold or what Evanora taught (or rather tried to keep from her daughter).
As a green witch, Rio is connected to plants. Her costume quite literally looks like vines and roots growing are forming the bodice. Are plants relevant in the sense of bloom and regeneration? Or rather decay and withering?
Using, dismantling, subverting, or cannonizing of symbols or tools of witchcraft. From kitschy to terrifying.
The hooded figures who appear in front of the teen, is there one for each member of the coven? Is it a haunted form of themselves, or a twisted appartion assigned to capture each?
Part of this story is found family, and Agatha's fear of comraderie. Built off a lifetime of distrust, backstabbing, and taking, Agatha has to learn to trust. In a similar vein, Agatha has no sense of comfort or home.
The scene where Agatha's face is covered in small cuts or splatters of blood. Either that is the cataylst to a glorifying rise near the end of the show, or a horrifying turn of seemingly irredemtion.
Rio was once Agatha's companion, her only companion. A betrayal between the two sent Agatha into permanent solitude.
I sincerely hope this show explores horror and gives into the darkness that Multiverse of Madness teased. Comic relief is a needed presence, but the tone is overall geared towards darker themes and storylines
Speaking of darkness - night! The majority of this series will take place at night! At least the juicy and important scenes.
DOES AGATHA POSSESS THE DARKHOLD AGAIN OR WAS ITS APPEARANCE IN A FLASHBACK
When Agatha was young and on the run, she was targeted for possessing the Darkhold.
Rio and Agatha...history may call them the best of friends.
The Ballad of the Witche's Road might be sung in several versions/genre's (we've already heard two)
More lyrics of the ballad will be revealed and sung as the story progresses.
The Witches Road may be terrible, but it is a unifying force as it welcomes everyone. Remember the lyrics: "Seekest thou the road, all that's foul and fair," the road is a living thing, inviting everyone but casting judgement on those who can achieve
I will cry at some point. I am certain this will break me just as Wandavision broke me.
The glowing tree in the middle of the Witch's Road has something hidden beneath and growing within the roots. (Is it the heart of the Road, because it is a living legend?)
Each of the witches will have to confront their greatest fears manifested as scenes, memories, or landscapes of their personal hells. Only when they begin to trust each other or confront/admit their weakness can their proceed. Agatha would obviously have the final and hardest challenge.
Without her magic, such a core tenant of her identity and confidence, Agatha will be even more combatative and threatening (borne entirely out of insecurity).
Agatha's cameo, and the lock of hair in it, is a reminder of her humanity and connection.
At some point, Agatha will break, spilling out centuries worth of every held back, messy emotion (and Kathryn Hahn will SERVE).
Perhaps it is based on the obvious Eve allegory, but there will be more biblical allegories or subversions. Is Agatha being born anew?
Teen and Señor Scratchy bond. It is likely a trauma bond. (The rabbit may also gain a more horrifying form or eat an entire monster/adversary)
Elaborate outfit reveal. ELABORATE FINALE COSTUME OUTFIT REVEAL! AGATHA ACHIEVES ENLIGHTMENT AND HER MOST POWERFUL FORM WHEN SHE FINALLY RECLAIMS HER MAGIC...possibly foiling Wanda when she became the Scarlet Witch.
This is not an exhaustive list, but it will be interesting to compare these ideas to how the show actually plays out. In all of this excitement, there is still a touch of trepidation. After pouring so much love into counting down the days to release and yielding art, writing, research, and costumes for this character, Agatha has remained a fun force of exploration and expression for me. However, the excitement over seeing where Kathryn Hahn takes the character next assuages any and all fears, as we finally will confront who exactly Agatha was all along.
Get ready witches, it's time to walk the road.

Okay here is my current checklist of theories for episode 7:
We are going to get some Cobb brother flashbacks about how they died. It will have something to do with the water overflow door he glanced at end of ep 5. It will definitely be *someone's* fault, like full on manslaughter minimum, but I'm not sure if it'll be Oz, Francis or Rex.
Rex Calabrese was a shitbag (and maybe Oz's dad?) reveal. Touched on in this post.
Oz is going to collapse the tunnels where his crime lab is and cause a ton of death and destruction above ground. Maybe he uses the water overflow door somehow?
Sal dies in the collapsed crime lab after some gesture of loyalty/love/kindness to Sofia, which she learns about either directly or indirectly, to get her enraged going into the finale. I just think her anger is too distant right now, she needs a fresh wound to make the final battle really personal.
Francis will die here too, probably. Here is my incredibly specific theory on how. Maybe she doesn't die yet, but she turns on him here, but either ways, Oz also has to get utterly enraged going into the finale.
No one wants a showdown where the two opponents see each other as obstacles and not mortal enemies, you know?
This ring is gonna be prominent this episode, I can just tell. It's about time for this symbol to come home to roost.
Julian scene that actually makes him click in the story. Please Mr HBO. Just a crumb of understanding as to why we've seen so much of him. I love seeing Dr Subdrop on screen I just don't understand why he's here like this.
Maybe whatever his expertise is, he gets to monologue while doing it. I'm still not sure if it's gonna be like, electroshock therapy or his hypnotism thing or what.
I think either ways, Julian's brain fuckery is gonna be out seque into the flashback bit of this ep.
More vaguely, I think most of this episode is going to be Oz getting out of jams and setting up for the final battle? Some of the stuff we've seen in the trailers, where it seems Oz has a real plan in motion (city hall, that call to sofia, the airport scene), that won't kick into gear until the finale.
Fingers crossed I will not have humiliated myself too badly when this ep actually drops lol I'm so hype

/sideeyes Qrow's symbol [And Raven's...]
Did anyone else notice that Raven's symbol has a clock in the wing, and Qrow's has a gear? Oz's symbol is a gear and his whole... thing, is based around time for, well... reasons. Teams are four members strong, but there's an exception, the Atlas arc and Ironwood's Ace Operatives. But... what if they had a form to guide them?
Because I can very much imagine a set of teenagers at Beacon, all seventeen-ish, meeting during the whole 'lets throw people off a cliff' and going to yell at their headmaster. Only to discover a fifth teen. Oz might have silver hair at that point... but he's still so terrifyingly young. None of them can quite believe a kid their age is the headmaster and Oz, blushing, can only shrug and blame Vale's council. If Summer is anything like early season Ruby, she hears that and thinks 'new friend!' and, since she's the leader, the others go along with it. Qrow and Raven are kinda sceptical, but Oz is so happy to be seen as his actual age, even the Branwen twins can't deny that sweet smile and the desperation in those too old eyes.
So he trains with them when he can slip away, five teens just allowed to actually be teenagers without Ozma's mystical bullshit getting in the way [much]. But they can never do it openly. Oz might be as much a teenager as the rest of them, but he's also been fighting Grimm since he was fourteen, the experience he gained from the collective Ozcarnations enough to make him a legend in his own right. Oz is very much a full Huntsman, for all that the ethics of that are iffy, it's still less iffy than those council idiots giving him Beacon.
So. Officially, team ST[O]RQ has four members, just like any other. But then? Then they get told to pick symbols to represent themselves. There's no way for them to register all five, colors or symbols... but by then Oz has granted the twins flight. So Taiyang picks a flaming heart, divided as though into wings of his own in tribute to their silent fifth member. Qrow chooses a gear to go inside his wing symbol, an echo of Oz without being obvious. He hopes. The gear is commented on several times over his time as a Huntsman, Qrow has certain regrets. Raven, whose favorite fairytale growing up was the infinite man and is rather sus, adds a clock to her wing symbol. Hey, Oz... she has suspicions. Maybe tell her? Nah? Okay then... that'll never backfire on you.
So the team forms. A white rose for Summer, a golden spread heart for Tai, a black wing with a clock in it for Raven and a red wing with Oz's gear in it for Qrow. He adds a second gear, hoping to be less obvious, but that doesn't really succeed either... hey Qrow, you can be a bit too adorable at times.
So yeah. Team STRQ probably consisted of five teenagers, each trying to find their place in the world. Summer's silver eyes would normally have been the major issue. Except, of course, that Ozpin is by then at least part Ozma. And magic in Remnant, of either variant, complicates things. Together? No wonder team STRQ is famous this long after it broke up...

Jumping off your V6 Giftbag nit-pick: Considering emblems are/were a thing, I'm surprised we don't see a lot of interaction with clothing in RWBY. How cool would it be if Ruby's cloak belonged to a silver-eyed ancestor? Or that the purple sash on Yang's leg was a symbol of good luck from her dad? Or Weiss modifying her family crest or Blake getting piercings in her cat ears instead of wrapping them in a bow? All these little things that would add so much to their characters.
Yes, stuff like that would be amazing! Now that I think about it, RWBY has already made space in the show for that kind of characterization, they just made it... bland. AKA, the outfit changes in Volume 7. Rather than having a couple of characters generically change their hair for no reason other than what the audience might headcanon (I guess killing your stalker ex with your maybe girlfriend makes people crave a haircut?) actually tie the change to the character and to whatever they're personally going through.
The one example I can think of where RWBY did this decently is with Jaune: upgrading with Pyrrha's armor and then later incorporating a bit of her sash (even if I question, from a world building perspective) why he has her personal effects + how he got them in the midst of/following a horrific battle. Especially when Pyrrha disintegrated.) But still, we understand both why he's changing now and why that change is emotionally significant. It adds something to his story rather than simply being change for the sake of change.
Personally, I love the idea of Blake getting some awesome earrings, moving from hiding her ears, to letting them be natural, to actively showing them off. I've wanted Weiss to move away from the pincess-y look for a while, just because it's so closely tied to the image her father sculpted for her. Give me a short-haired, practical-but-still-stylish looking Weiss (similar to Winter, perhaps?) who never could have passed as Jacques' perfect heiress. Maybe even a callback where Ruby notes that she's dropped the combat skirt and Weiss admits that it was never really her thing. Yeah, give us an ancient, tattered cloak that's been passed down through multiple SEWs, old enough that Maria recognizes on sight it even though Ruby dyed it red after her mother's death. Give me a Yang who, after getting blindsided by Adam, gives herself an impromptu buzz cut both to symbolize this new stage of her life and so that no one can ever use her long hair as a combat weakness. I want Nora's scars to be on her face (cowards) and for Ren to incorporate something of Nora's alongside his dad's dagger; for Oscar to hold onto pieces of his farmboy identity and Ozpin to carry bits of the past that aren't just random bomb-canes. Why can't the gears in Qrow's weapon be a nod to his long relationship with Oz? (A great nitpick I saw recently). Why can't Ruby and Yang both have a splash of purple to represent their family? Why have these characters traveled across a good chunk of their world now, but visiting all those places have barely left a mark? Why can't all the characters wear clothes that MATCH THE ENVIRONMENT THEY'RE IN? Sure, they've changed physically, but the changes are largely, randomly cosmetic, devoid of any meaning outside of, "It's a new Volume and we need new models for the next three-ish years. Better give the characters an outfit update. Incorporate the meaning of those changes into the story? Nah, too much work."

Nitpick November #5
So why did Harbinger have gears in it, something that’s been a part of Oz’s aesthetic?
Back when I watched V3 I kinda assumed Oz made Harbinger and I was kinda like “🏳️🌈?” and then at the end of the volume when Qrow was holding Oz’s cane I thought “🏳️🌈!!!!??????????”
Anyways, I think this was a missed opportunity. Either all of the inner circle’s weapons could’ve had gears in them as a subtle nod to their allegiance to Oz, and then maybe characters like Raven that left Oz’s circle could’ve had their weapons replaced as like symbolism or something.
Or
Only Qrow has gears in his weapon because he has some deeper connection with Oz that no one else in the inner circle has, romantic or otherwise.

Hai !! I just saw your overthrown Ozpin art and I am thus very curious about this AU 👀 What changes from canon ? Does Ozma still reincarnates ? When did things go wrong ? What is his main goal ? And what is he like personnality-wise ?
okay, SO, about the overthrown au (thank you SO much for asking i've been wanting an excuse to infodump abt this au for a while)
what changes from canon- well, a lot of things are the same, like oz still reincarnates, though things in canon are only the same up til the time of volume 2. ozpin's backstory is, of course, still the same! though the story takes place over a FAR longer period of time than in canon, that is, it takes place ~17 years, from v2 onward.
as for what/when things go wrong, sometime prior to the v2 dance, ozpin is approached by a councilman who wants his seat, and threatens ozpin that if he weren't to give up his seat on the council (and thus stop being headmaster), that all of his secrets would be leaked. ozpin naturally doesn't believe him, but this bites him in the ass a week later when salem makes a broadcast to the entirety of remnant, leaking ozpins backstory, but twisting it to favor her and make ozpin into the bad guy. the vale council quickly decides to have ozpin executed, and it almost succeeds, but ozpin escapes and is officially exiled and on the run for around 2 years. sometime before ozpins escape, qrow and glynda are killed, and naturally, ozpin grieves. oz is... very shaken up by what's happened to him, to his friends, as well as ironwoods and leo's betrayal (ironwood was fairly easy to convince oz was bad). so his mental state starts crumbling the longer he's on the run.
his main goal is still the same, at least for a while! though he's a lot more ruthless and forceful about it. since everyone seems so willing to believe oz is the bad guy, ozpin goes out of his way to BE the bad guy. at some point he teams up with roman, and gets cinder, emerald, mercury, watts, and tyrian on his side, and he even starts 'taming' grimm (i.e. scaring grimm into submission) to work alongside him. during the 41st vytal festival, ozpin takes over similar to how cinder did (though instead of the screens being red with a queen chess piece, they're green with his gear symbol!) and completely takes over beacon and thus vale. oz basically goes out of his way to be bad, for several reasons, and he HATES having to be the bad guy but he'd rather die than admit that to himself.
this is also where things start VERY much diverging from canon. the biggest example is oscar! sometime after ozpin takes over vale, and after he's destroyed some random village he decided to take his anger out on, he finds a little baby oscar and decides to take him in to raise him to be his future successor. oscar is also a ram faunus!
as for ozpin's personality- well, he is EXTREMELY different from canon. he's loud, angry, vulgar, the polar opposite of canon. he's also extremely fucked up and very controlling. he's a bit (a lot) of an alcoholic, and smokes a lot, and he can get VERY violent. the biggest example of ozpin's violence in this au is, sadly, oscar. when oscar was around 5, ozpin hit him for the first time, and very quickly it spiraled into abuse, and only got worse as the years dragged on. ozpin is also violent with the newly-revived qrow and glynda (yes, revived, ozpin resurrected them in a sudden burst of desperation and magic. he can't do it again, even if he wanted to). suffice to say, they aren't happy with oz, but can't leave because ozpin has the ability to control them whenever he wishes.
whoops, this got a bit long kaljnkjdsn, uh!! feel free to ask any more questions!! either for more stuff about the overthrown au, or just to elaborate on something! i looooove talking about this au tbh,,

Hi queen!! Welcome back to my weekly questions! XD Having seen what might be in store for Oscar in the intro, I’m worried for both him and Ozpin.
Part of me wonders what will happen in order to keep himself sane! Do you think we’ll see Oz talking with Salem to protect Oscar from any emotional torture or will we see something new from them both? I think there is something more to our farm boi than the past hosts!
Hiya Pining o/ Well my fellow Pinehead, I’m actually the opposite of you since based on what I saw in that intro, I’m actually really, really excited for Oscar’s development for this season. Judging by the intro visuals, it seems like there will be a point in the story where Oscar may wind up being tortured psychologically.
In the intro, it featured Oscar holding his head while an spectre of a monstrous-looking Salem hovered above him. The last time we saw this version of Salem, it was from an illusion projected by Emerald after the villains had lost the Battle of Haven.
So it wouldn’t surprise me if this shot from the intro is a sign of Emerald becoming Oscar’s torturer, using Salem’s monstrous form to possibly play into the little prince’s fears. This could mean that we can FINALLY get a look into Oscar true thoughts and feelings---everything that he’s probably been bottling up since he left home.

This is a chance for the show to allow the audience to FINALLY look inside who Oscar is as a person---what he sees and finally show the REAL RAW TRUTH behind how he’s handling everything. While I understand that most Pineheads are nervous about what Salem will do to Oscar while imprisoned but, I dunno, for me, I can’t help but feel over the moon for this. An experience like this could honestly open doors to a lot of growth for Oscar as his own character. It could also lend to his growing relationship with Oz.
For V8, Salem will probably attempt to target Oscar where he’s most vulnerable right now---his mind. Since that’s the part of him that’s split into two. But this can also provide an avenue to show Oscar and Oz finally working together for once since this will be a moment where Salem will be launching an attack on them. Oscar’s mind isn’t just home to his soul but Oz’s too and if Salem tries to destroy that, this is a chance for BOTH SOULS to band together for once and fight back TOGETHER---proving that they are much stronger as one mind---one soul and person rather than apart the way they are :D
Don’t you see Pining. This could be EPIC! Well…epic if actually executed well enough. And you’re right. I’d still love to hold out for the concept of Oscar being meant to symbolize the last in the Ozma cycle. He is meant to be the end. The one meant to live to see Salem’s defeat and the one life free of being forced to prolong this never-ending fight with the immortal Wicked Witch.
I’d also love to still think that Oscar is meant to represent the true reincarnation of Ozma---his first form that he never regained that was reborn in Modern Remnant as Oscar Pine. Thus making Oscar actually Ozma. The real Ozma. Or at least the new him as opposed to previous Wizards of Light who were otherwise their own men.
I still love my Pinehead headcanon of Oscar merging with Oz meant to symbolize making him whole again---fully reviving Ozma---the God’s chosen champion in Modern Remnant. I still love that theory but I doubt it’ll actually become canon. Nonetheless, if there’s one thing that is for certain is that Oscar is meant to be different. Everything the show has said about him is steering towards that. But we will see. Overall, I think we should gear ourselves for some good Oscar-worthy action this rounds, fam. Fingers crossed.

So it's no secret im critical of RWBY, I am with most things I enjoy. But the keyword of that is "enjoy", I love RWBY, have since I first discovered it and I wanted to talk about the things I love about it.
The Characters
You can write the most fantastic plot on the world but it means nothing if you don't have good characters. Since the beginning RWBY has been about its characters, it's even named after them. And we're introduced to these 4 girls all with hopes and dreams and watching them reach them.
And watching them grow throughout the course of the show is both heartwarming and heart breaking.
When these discussions come up everyone brings up. Weiss, which is fair she's had the most significant change (and shes a queen). She goes from stuck up princess to a warmer person. I love that she remembers the lessons she learned, Volume 1 or even Volume 2 Weiss wouldn't be the one comforting Yang in Volume 5. She might try but I feel like it would come across as insincere or lack the weight it did if Ruby was in her place.
This Weiss knows the pain Yang's going through, and the first thing that comes to her is to be there for her.
But hese two have never been very close. They've taunted and laughed and fought for each other and for me this is when Nice Weiss was just the new natural Weiss. But without losing what makes Weiss, Weiss.
But it's also the little things. Weiss defending Blake against Cordovin, Blake wrapping Weiss in a blanket when she's scared. Ruby being awe and supporting her team. The train scene to Argus felt like we were back in Beacon, Blake reading her book, Weiss is rolling her eyes but going along with Ruby and Yang and Ruby are fighting over who's winning a video game.
And its not limited to them, seeing Qrow being a badass and reluctant parent is always a fun time. And his alcoholism being explored was interesting and I didn't think we'd end up there. (It really puts Ruby into perspective, trying to be strong and happy for everyone with the stance of a leader. Ruby is a leader, that question was undoubtly answered.
Seeing Jaune, this goofy coward with a big heart go at Cinder because of Pyrrah's death... That hurt... That hurt a lot. And I may argue about the Statue scene but I hope he gets closure. (And stays away from those thirsty Mantle mums)
Ozpin's and Ironwoods downward spirals and reveals were beautifully done. It really felt like their Oz counterparts, going from the all knowing wizard to the man behind the curtain and the tin man losing his heart. You see just how much Ozpin cared for others, how his actions hurt many but have always been built on good intentions and just how human he is.
You see just how resilient and strong Ironwood is, how he's misguided but he will do whatever it takes. Really hit the theme of fear, especially with Ozpin's speech at the end.
The Music
Only gets better and better honestly. Casey you are awesome, the music is something I can never be prepared for. Until the End still makes me bawl like a baby everytime I hear it and they just reflect each and every scene, character and fight their placed in. The music in RWBY can feel as instrumental (see what I did there 🙃) to the show as the plot. Their intertwined, both telling these great stories. And they absolutely hold up, personally I love Weiss's songs and This will be the day and if that plays during the final battle I will scream.
They don't just hype up scenes, they add to them. I know ya'll were crying when Forever Fall started playing as the leaves hit the ground and Pyrrah's statue was revealed (... Not that I did.) And I'm already wondering about the songs for V8.
The writing and the Plot
Because despite some of the issues and criticism, it is good. I don't think we'd still be watching if we didn't believe that. Ironwood and Ozpin are my go to for awesome writing but their not the only instances of it. Yang and Ruby being reunited, Ruby instantly apologising and rambling and Yang giving her a big hug before bringing in Weiss, that was awesome.
Instantly we have Ruby, who up until now has been a leader crumble. In that moment she's Yang's little sister and Weiss is her best friend, nothing cemented that more for me that than moment after they've been apart for so long.
Ozpin's Backstory was long awaited and personally I loved it. You have two people, made us understand how much they loved each other and how their differing views changed the world and lead to the stare of remnant today. Do I prefer my headcannon? Of course I do, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy this any less.
Tai, Port and Oobleck talking with Yang, we needed that joy and she needed it too. It just felt real... You have these teachers and mentors who've seen war and destruction and they try to make her laugh. And I wish we could've seen more of that.
And the fact it keeps making us and them question things. Was it wrong for Ozpin to lie? Was it wrong for Raven for leave? Are we doing the right thing by going to Atlas? Should we tell Ironwood the truth? Should Ozpin have told Salem? Should Robin be trusted? Should Zwei be integral to the plot? The fact that they can do this, lay the consequences for what happened and still make us debate on the outcomes and the what ifs is impressive. (Although the Zwei one is fact)
Symbolism
Here's a few I found because I am a sucker for it and yes I know they may not all be intentional:
Both Yang and Adam have similar semblances. Except, Yangs takes time over a fight to build up, reflecting her thrill of a fight and how she likes to take risks. While Adam charges his into huge and constant attacks, showing his desire and eagerness to hurt others. Making them somewhat parallel the other, how they are quite alike in attitudes but not heart which is why Blake chooses Yang.
Ozpin having the relic of choice under Beacon because he values it so much, he makes sure everyone has one before they join him, before Pyyrah became the maiden. How one choice changed everything for him.
The White Fang wear Grimm masks, how they became more about spreading fear and they became more like monsters.
Ironwood having the relic of creation, the focus of innovation and robotics that's so prevalent in Atlas and how its energy was used to raise the city above the rest.
Ozpin being associated with gears and clocks.
Qrow and Raven's names mirroring their bird forms. But also because crows are seen as symbols of misfortune and Raven's are symbols of insight and prophecy.
Every Wizard of Oz and fairytale reference. There are too many to name so here's a few: Pinnochio being eaten by a Whale (giant whale grimmm and our protector of mantle), Tock is a crocodile Faunus who's semblance was dictated by a ticking clock, Ozpin glynda and Ironwood are Oz the good witch and tinman. Salem has flying gorilla grimm.
(side note for V8, from the trailer it seems Salem is looking for someone. She represents the Wicked witch, has her flying grimm.. And its been said Oscar represents Dorothy so get the missing posters ready)
Pyyrah being the one to unlock Jaune's aura and the idea of losing someone the way he lost her is what unlocks his semblance.
And that's all. Im well aware RWBY isn't a masterpiece and that it's not awful either. I love it for what it is.
#rwby#I love Rwby#Rwby deserves more love its not a masterpiece but who cares#Message from a fan and a critic#ruby rose#weiss schee#yang xiao long#blake bellodona

The Alcoholics: Parallels in the Lives of Qrow and Oz

Like Sakura Wars, RWBY is a story that depends on the strength of the characters' emotional bonds. One of the strongest emotional bonds is between Qrow and Ozpin, two characters whose lives parallel each other at an earlier stage.
The bond between them is referenced in the first episode when Ozpin fondly remarks to Ruby that her fighting style reminds him of "a dusty old crow". "That's my uncle!" Ruby proudly exclaims. It's mentioned again in the first episode of the third season when Ruby says that the more she gets to know Ozpin, "the more he's starting to sound like Uncle Qrow". And when Qrow finally appears two episodes later, it's to drunkenly defend Ozpin's honor from Ironwood's insult.
I've written of how the Qrow/Winter brawl is a clash between loyal partisans in "Snowbirds of a Feather", but the partisanship doesn't end there or with them.
When Glynda defended Qrow's drinking my eyebrows hit the ceiling. They spent three seasons building Glynda up as someone with OCD tendencies and zero tolerance for shenanigans, and now this? There was one and only one thing that could make our no-nonsense neat freak back a sloppy drunk who just made a mess of her courtyard -- guilt. She felt responsible for driving Qrow to drink. Right then I knew he'd been going on meatgrinder missions with insufficient resources and little to no backup for people who both cared for him and felt they had no choice. It was a revelation that changed the whole texture of the show, and pointed out just how deeply loyal Qrow was to Ozpin.
These examples indicate Qrow's feelings for Ozpin, but what of Ozpin's feelings for Qrow? Ozpin doesn't leap to Qrow's defense or even verbally acknowledge his actions, and seems more exasperated by his antics than anything else. The signs that he also feels a strong bond to Qrow are more subtle and appear later.
Ozpin introduces Qrow to Pyrrha as "a trusted colleague". He certainly is, being, as we later find out, the one person entrusted with finding and shepherding his next incarnation. But more than that, Qrow is the only person in six volumes who we have ever seen Ozpin look to for approval. When Pyrrha came to Ozpin's office, Ozpin waited until Qrow signaled that he approved of her before telling her about the Maidens. And when faced with growing condemnation over his secrecy, Ozpin held firm until Qrow lashed out at him. It was Qrow's accusations over how Oz had hurt Qrow personally that finally drove Oz into isolation.
For the record, I'm on board for unrequited Cloqwork but nothing more. I doubt the twins had good role models for non-abusive authority figures growing up. "The strong live, the weak die" is a mantra for predatory opportunists, not for people whose moral codes contain strongly defined boundaries around what authority figures can and can't do. Yet Qrow has learned how to be a non-abusive authority figure by the time we meet him; and he must have learned it at Beacon, from Oz, his teachers, and his classmates. I can't see Oz risking someone he clearly had plans for early on not learning such an important lesson as that by modeling a relationship that pushed the boundaries at a time when in all likelihood Qrow barely had any boundaries to begin with. But regardless of whether there is any sexual or requited romantic connection, there is clearly a very strong emotional bond that both men value a great deal.
Qrow is Ozpin's eyes in the field, a job literally encapsulated in their symbols. Ozpin's symbol is two clockwork gears, Qrow's symbol, which he must have registered while attending Beacon, is a winged gear in the shape of an eye, with his twin having the mirror image, which can interlock. It's not exactly subtle.
However, I believe Ozpin considers Qrow not merely a valuable asset, but a reflection of his earlierer self. Both Qrow and Ozma are protectors at heart, and despite the fates they have suffered, this fact goes to the core of their identities. Both men suffer from a carefully concealed depression and a degree of self-loathing. Qrow feels cursed by his Semblance and separated from his loved ones. Ozma 4.0 felt cursed by his mission and separated from his loved ones. And both men dealt with their problems by retreating into alcoholism. They even use the same hip flask, which isn't the only one in the show (Ironwood uses a concha-style flask), so it's not just a case of the animators being lazy.
Because of this resonance Ozpin feels a deep empathy for Qrow. I believe this empathy caused him to see Qrow not just as a potential asset, but as someone he could save from going down the same self-destructive path that he had gone down. And to give credit where credit is due, Qrow admits that Ozpin did save Qrow to a huge extent, by giving his life purpose and meaning and a time when he needed those things. Judging by Ozpin's reaction when Qrow's support of him was withdrawn, this good deed meant a great deal to Ozpin as well.
While their breakup is still fresh and painful, both mutual growth and an eventual reconciliation would fit the show's theme of 'Keep Moving Forward". So far we've only seen young people demonstrate the ability to grow and change, but for the theme to truly be universal we need to see it demonstrated by our older characters as well.
This last parallel is only a hunch at this point, but I suspect there is a final way in which the two men are alike. I suspect that in both men their depression is interfering with their Semblances. There is a widely-held fan belief that Qrow's Semblance isn't bad luck, but luck that reflects his self-image. Logically, if he gets his self-image problems worked out, his luck should improve exponentially -- hopefully before his next round with Tyrian. But what if Oz has the same problem? What if it's not the case that his magic has been "dwindling" so much as his growing depression has been blocking his ability to tap into his magic? In the real world, this is what happens with depression and creativity. The more severely depressed you are, the less able you are to tap into your creativity. It would make sense for magic to work in a similar manner. Thus, if Ozpin gets his own inner turmoil worked out, it might unleash the full potential of his magic -- just in time for the finale.
Maybe, maybe not. But we can dream.

Qrow and Ozpin ( part one )
Two of my absolute favorites in rwby
they’re both chaotic bastards, but in completely different ways, and I love them so much.
So let’s talk about their relationship.
disclaimer: this is not a cloqwork post, I don’t really ship that, sorry folks
Let’s start with their aesthetics/symbolism.
So it’s been stated multiple times that color theory and symbolism, plus recurring motifs and things like that are key to understanding the show. We’ve all probably noticed little things like Ruby modelling her outfits after people she cares about, (specifically Pyrrah and Penny), she also based her weapon off of Harbinger. Jaune is just wearing all of Pyrrah’s stuff. Neo has Roman’s hat. Salem kept Ozma’s staff.
So people in Remnant hold on to things or ideas from people they love and care about deeply.
I drew on a whole page I was supposed to be taking notes on about this, so hear me out
1. They both have little cross shaped things on their necks. Ozpin’s is a weird little pin, and Qrow’s is just a whole necklace. 2. They both have the gear motif thing going on. Ozpin’s is a gear inside another gear ( kinda basic, but cool and easy to draw ), and Qrow’s is also a gear inside another gear, except his is also stylized to look like an eye.
It is worth noting that the outer gear on Qrow’s symbol has the same number of little notch thingies ( don’t know what they’re called )
Side note: Raven’s symbol is also connected to Oz, but not as much as Qrow’s, hers is a clock stylized to look kinda like an eye, and Ozpin’s office is literally in a clock.
3. They both have exposed gears/mechanism things on their weapons, near the hilt. Harbinger is way bigger and cooler though, no offense, Oz. Though The Long Memory is waayyyyyy easier to draw.
4. They both are constantly drinking something, and have a specific container they like to drink it from.
Ozpin’s is a mug with Beacon’s emblem on it ( probably just took one from the gift shop ), he’s constantly drinking hot chocolate. Qrow’s is... a flask. With some kind of alcoholic drink in it.
5. They have similar color schemes. Qrow’s being red, grey and black. Ozpin’s being green, black, and grey ( grey is less prominent in his design than Qrow’s though.)
So yeah. They were bros. I’m sad because they’re kinda fighting right now.
Next essay will cover and analyze their character relationship, which I think is very interesting.

⭐️
For each “⭐️” I get, I’ll write a headcanon about our muses.
It’s hard to keep to RWBY couple tradition of exchanging their colors (aka the bees & ghria/khali) when Oz and Clo both wear green so Clover adds Ozpin’s emblem to his apperance/person. Kingfisher’s hook gains gears symbols and Clover’s red armbanded has green gears stitched into it.
They have hotpot dates. A lot. Clover makes hotpot at home. Ozpin, you’re so freaking lucky.
Clover picks up the headmaster and he carries Ozpin over his shoulder. No more working late and no more stress baking. on purpose Clover is going to take care of Ozpin. on freaking purpose.
A family can be a Headmaster, an Atlesian Military Operative, and their matching couple mug set that Clover bought literally 3 months into dating. Clover got it bad for Headmaster.
Ozpin could read out loud a receipe for croque monsieur and that’s enough for Clover to go to war for him. I wish I was joking.

Possible Oscar semblances in two categories: ones that have at least one ounce of canon support, and ones that would just be the coolest thing
coolest things:
idea one: flight
appeal: Oscar could have. the most fun.
and wouldn’t have to worry about making a landing strategy with an adjustable stick.
Also please imagine Oscar storming off for something and Qrow flying after him trying to get him back but Oscar won’t land so Qrow has to just keep cawing at him and now Oscar is ranting to a bird at 1500 feet
idea two: aura projections that are like summons of the past Ozes
appeal: Badass.
Potential drama factor through the roof.
RT gets to use the Ozpin model they made seemingly for the singular purpose of standing still in the V6 opening.
an ounce of canon support:
idea one: some kinda time thing.
exhibit A: according to that one merch, Oscar’s inherited the gear symbol and gears are time associated
exhibit B: Oz did this thing that one time
idea two: shields
exhibit A: Oz did this thing that one time
exhibit B: Oscar took this shot
and downright tanked it
(I know it was supposed to show “Hey Oscar knows how to keep his aura up now!” after the training episode, but there’s keeping up your barrier to not die, and there’s taking a fiery rock explosion to the face and not budging)
Shields and flight are my current favorites, though I would also be in favor of making plants grow
#rwby#oscar pine#theories#my posts are in strictly professional style on this here tumbler dot com#idk what im doing#im a little tired#i have very fun scene ideas with every one of these options#the shields one involves oscar with no immediate backup in mantle with a pack of grimm coming#flight involves a uh... controlled... pushing oscar off the side of atlas#penny is there the whole time he is never really in mortal peril#though the idea that he is /pisses him off/ and it takes flying himself up there#telling ironwood and/or clover off#and then flying off again#and then penny catching up to him#for him to be like IM NOT ON THE GROUND#flight is the least dramatic option#me talking

SU episode summary: Back to Homeworld arc
This post summarizes episodes Legs From Here to Homeworld to the Escapism. Change your Mind will get its own separate review.
Legs form Here to Homeworld
Stevens face when BD hugs (crushes) him XD
So after all the conflict, the Diamonds are friendly ? IDK what to think I mean it was bound to happen but still, maybe YD will change her mind.
YD tears on gems XD also does Steven’s gem look a bit different here, more pink ?
Though short its good to see Nephrite back, in her true form too though I wonder why in her true form she doesn’t remember anything about her time being corrupted or with Steven I mean she’s sentient to know the diamonds as centipeedle. Plus the reference to Save the Light !
Finally WD’s gonna enters the story.
Pink Legs are PD ships, called IT, and still makes the entrance to junk pile really awkward !
PD’s ships got those that’s that go on for miles XD Also its funny that it has high heels
I like Connie’s mom in this scene, also them looking a the ship’s booty XD. You think that’s what Ronaldo was taking a picture of XD.
Sometimes I wonder if the gems get Earth things wrong on purpose cause Cats don’t need to be watered Garnet. Bismuth’s speech could be proof cause she’s been out only for a little bit and knows earth terms !
Like mother like son eh Pearl !
Homeworld’s a shattered planet ? Also tall Homeworld Peridots !
Another white Pearl ? What’s up with her face ? Also nice Wizard of Oz reference there
WD, so bright. Wait is she the inventor of the high heel ? Or did she steal the idea form Earth ?
Well that was something ? Lets see what’s happens next
Familiar
Cute little pebbles. Also Steven’s gem is back to being reddish. Im also still waiting to see/hear how PD went from a brat shown in Jungle Moon to being nice !
YP ugh ! and I agree on Steven on the bathing suit, you’ve worn a tux before Pearl !
Homeworld is low on supplies yet there making gems just to use as walls ?
Ok I take it back Pearl. Plus im pretty sure this this conforms that Homeworld does take ideas from Earth.
YD is jealous of Steven XD Plus her laughing ! And how did she do that thing with her sweat ?
BP, my gem :)
What does Pearl mean by conquer ? Is there other sentient races in the Steven Universe’s universe ? Are Sneeple confirmed ?
First gems just for wall and now for statues ? Combs NOW ! I don’t see why the lowers gems don’t rebel, you think they ever tried (not counting Crystal Gems). Also peoples dream of BD in a pool have just come true, even if she is still in her normal clothes XD !
Who knew gems practiced oral hygiene ?
Fools gold came from the Diamonds, I wonder if this confirms that they named all the other gems ? or at least there nicknames ?
I actually use to play a similar game like that with my friends ! Small world.
That pebble still has Steven’s phone. Also they come from Rose’s tears ? Speaking of which, her drawings are cute and represent how she’s the child of the diamonds.
Peter Griffin must be happy that Stevens’ singing the title so often in his song.
Cinderella reference, cute but Steven I think its unwise to look like your mom when your trying to prove your not.
Its Party Time Gems !
Together Alone
This is dream isn’t it, I can tell by YD long neck (which is hilarious) Pink Pearl, YD smiling , barf hair (which means something I don’t remember though) and WD.
Pearl watching Steven sleep again XD but where did Connie come from (they slept together sorta :3 LOL and the pebble still has the phone !
YP: What is fun ? SpongeBob crashes in: F is for Friends who do stuff together !!
More BP drawings ! YP as a model LOL
BD your rudeness is showing again ! and Connie as a pet, if anyone’s a pet its Steven.
More fusion prejudice !
Amethyst with limb enhancers, Cool ! Now lets seem her use them in combat ! And Sapphires !
WD thinks she’s too cool for this ! And those gear gems symbolize perfectly how other gems are only parts used by the diamonds.
Stevonnie, uh oh what’s happening ! OMG Opal is back, its been forever since she’s been in the series !
I knew those cheek gems were intersti DAMMIT YELLOW stop destabilizing everyone. At least it shows there still not 100% friends/allies yet.
Steven and Connie are in a time out !
Escapism
I don’t see why at least Steven couldn’t go out that window, he could have float and get home.
An astral projection episode, at least its not 100% filler.
Marlonwebb: The Crystal Gems are going to get even. Thank to the aid of Watermelon Steven !
First watermelon dogs now birds, how ? Also its cool to see that the melons have formed a military. The dog stands ! At least this plot point is short.
Watermelon sharks ! At least Steven’s kiss made it friendly.
Who knew Bismuth was handy with other materials besides steel ? Also Connie cuddling Steven, cute !
