As the most senior of the mainstay of the Silent Sisterhood’s tactical formations, the Vigilator Cadres are often deployed in battle in order to identify and excise the key components of an enemy force at close quarters. Whether their quarry is a single rogue psyker among a civilian hab-block or a resistance movement thousands strong, they serve to root out the command centres responsible and remove them, allowing the other units deployed in tangent to destroy the scattered resistance.

In larger detachments, the Vigilator Cadres also provide a greater level of versatility to the frontline assault, and the effect of their sweeping blades on the ranks of a cult rabble or rebel militia is as much a psychological weapon as a direct tool of war. Nor is the weapon itself idly chosen, as since time immemorial beheading is ever considered sure proof of death against the witch and those accursed by dark forces, and often this has in practice proved true, even against those riven with the power of the empyrean.

As their name implies, the Vigilators’ charge outside of direct militant action is often to oversee the collection of the Great Tithe and the escorting, under threat of death, of individuals to the Black Ships.

Andreas Besser

Andreas Besser creates bright, expressive character illustrations. With a light, cartoony style, his work is extremely popular in the children’s market, editorial, publishing, and more, but he also knows how to deliver a unique still or motion response to any brief. He is Based in Berlin, one of his earliest inspirations was Asterix as drawn by the French comic artist Albert Uderzo. Today, he likes Pascal Campion, who works with light in unique ways, and the unique line expressions of Felix Scheinberger. Before studying design and illustration in Würzburg, Germany, Andreas did an apprenticeship as a commercial artist, and trained as a printer. He worked in the Berlin studio Cartoon-Film, which helped him hone his professional skills.

Approach

First Andreas sketches out clean drawings on paper, then paints with watercolours, ink, or even coffee! After scanning a piece he goes to work with his graphics tablet. He animates both the traditional way using pencil and paper, or with animation software on his computer.

Styles

Andreas has a very simple method of adjusting his cartoony style – he holds his pencil differently and works either more expressively, or tight and detailed, depending on the look he wants to achieve. Each project promises exciting characters, unique faces and humorous details.

Above is my favourite illustration by Andreas Besser. He has created a really fun and detailed illustration that boasts personality and creativity. I especially love the fact that he has the animal position from an upside down angle. I think the illustration is really playful and would be extremely appealing to kids. He has also went into immense detail by including the fur of the animal. Even the detail and depth around the eyes is astonishing.

I absolutely love his work and style, the complex detail of his work is inspiring. I think his work is definitely something to aspire to. Although I don’t think I would ever be able to reach this level of complexity I hope to improve my skills to be able to create something even half as detailed as his work.

Charivaria is an exhibition curated by José Luis Espejo and Andrea Zarza running from 6 October to 28 January at CentroCentro gallery in Madrid, Spain. 

The exhibition consists of sound, visual and documentary resources from archives and plastic arts. Together, these tell a series of synchronous stories that span the period from the early Modern Age in Europe to the present day. These stories speak of blacksmiths, church bells, cowbells, festivals, protests, travelling musicians, carnivals and rites, to suggest hypothetical genealogies on how people use sound to position themselves in public space.

Among the most commonly seen by the general populace of the Imperium, Prosecutor Cadres act as the guards of the paramilitary organisation of the League of Black Ships as well as forming a strike infantry well-suited to combat missions outside of their silent halls. In field operations, Prosecutors specialise in open engagement of massed targets, favouring a modified variant of the Terran-pattern boltgun more commonly seen in the hands of the Legiones Astartes for its flexibility, stopping power, and high rate of fire.
